s spring finally just around the corner. Every

time I dare to think - is it warming up? - it seems to snow again. This month has got to be it, the big thaw! I would like to wish everyone a happy Easter and don’t forget to spoil our mums on Mothering Sunday.

March is spring cleaning month so there's some helpful tips on cleaners & a makeover and photoshoot for ourselves (I can personally recommend this,). This issue also takes a look at some of the truly inspirational work a mum has done to bring extra facilities to Furness to help local children with disabilities.

Lakes Legal is again keeping us well informed and I will be taking our travel counsellors advice and booking that holiday soon!

If you would like to advertise your business or events, or have something new and interesting happening I would love to hear from you. Contact me anytime using the contact information below. Remember our paper format goes through every door in the LA15 area and approx 1000 in Ulverston and approx 800 in Askam and is also left at pick up points, such as garages, cafes, doctors, libraries, shops, etc. I am in the process of increasing our distribution and hope to be delivering to the whole of Ulverston and Askam in the very near future. There is also a digital version which is well circulated on social networks and to an expanding mailing list. I would like to thank Lorraine Oates, Powder & Paint Photography for the editors photograph and this months lovely cover photo.

The Legacy Cumbria Friendship Group

The Legacy Cumbria Friendship Group is a family led group under the umbrella of The Legacy Rainbow House. We help children/young adults with disabilities to become more independent through Conductive Education, teaching life skills & improving social skills making integration into the community easier. The Legacy Cumbria Friendship Group has been founded by a mother desperate to bring life changing therapy called C o n d u c t i v e Education to the area of Barrow in Furness, Cumbria.

Joanne Bennett started fund raising on behalf of her 3 year old son Jack in 2012. Jack is a bright little boy and extremely handsome but was sadly diagnosed at 11 months old with severe Cerebral Palsy.

Because of the severity of Jacks condition he requires intensive therapy which simply isn’t available within the local community. His mum Joanne found a service called Conductive Education at The Legacy Rainbow House in Mawdesley, Lancashire which helps children 3 months to 16 years old.

Conductive Education is a learning system designed to enable children and adults to achieve greater independence. It is a repetitive learning process. The system of learning is carefully planned and highly structured and it can positively affect motivation and confidence and personality. The programme includes several series of tasks carried out in

6

different positions for example lying sitting, standing and walking. CE enables the child to work alongside others with similar problems in a lively and playful but structured group led by skilled conductors. The sessions are modified to suit each child’s abilities. As well as teaching children to sit crawl and walk, CE teaches everyday living skills such as dressing eating and personal hygiene. In the 18 months

children and other local children, the group will be offering services at the Greengate Children’s Centre, Greengate street Barrow in Furness after Easter. There are still places available so if you are interested please give Joanne a call on 01229 835228 for further information.

If you would like to make sure this service can continue to be offered in our area you can donate through just

giving text kidz43 to 70070 or visit www.justgiving.com/lcfg to make your donation.

Jack had attended the services, his physical abilities have rapidly improved and he is learning how to sit independently for a short space of time and weight bear. The only down side being is that unfortunately for Joanne and Jack this means they have a 4 hours round trip twice a week to get to The Legacy.

The Specialist therapy at The Legacy is not an easy way, nor is it a miracle cure but for Jack Alternatively you can have some family and the other children with disabling fun and join Joanne and the other mums conditions, they have to work extra hard to at a Funday this Easter Sunday at achieve what comes naturally to other Ulverston Sports and Social Cub children.

This is what made Joanne determined to raise £30 000 to bring the service to Cumbria one day per week, not just for Jack but for other children / young adults with disabilities – This is when The Legacy Cumbria Friendship Group was formed, the Morgan’s, The Kenny’s and the Jackson’s have joined in to help their

Finding the Right Cleaner for your Home With an industry turnover estimated at ÂŁ4.7bn in 2011, the UK cleaning industry is an area of growth in the UK (Office of National Statistics, 2012).

One of the biggest areas of growth is in the domestic cleaning sector. An ageing population and an increase in the number of families with two adults working full time has led to a huge demand for domestic cleaning.

Having a regular cleaner can free up precious time for you to do the things you enjoy

You have a few choices when looking for a cleaner. A popular method of finding a cleaner is through a card in newsagents or increasingly through social media e. g Facebook pages.

Another popular option is to use a Cleaning Business who specializes in supplying cleaners for differing types of cleaning jobs, either domestic or commercial.

Asking the right questions before hiring an individual cleaner or using a Cleaning Company could save you a lot of trouble in the future. Please see a few pointers below for the kind of questions to ask either a cleaner or cleaning business, and to check with your House insurance.

01229 584891 07966 028404

Individual Cleaner

Is the cleaner registered as Self- employed ? If not you are classed as their employer and liable for notifying the HMRC about any earnings, issuing a pay slip and paying any statutory entitlements to holidays, sickness etc... HMRC will have more information about this.

Cleaning Company or Agency Not necessary to check unless you want to as the staff will be employed by the Company or Agency

Does the Cleaner have a recent CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check ?

Does the Cleaner have a recent CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check ?

Does the Cleaner have references I could see?

Does the Cleaner have references I could see ?

Is the Cleaner covered by your house insurance should they have an accident and hurt or injure themselves?

A reputable cleaning company or agency should be happy to show you a copy of their employer’s liability insurance.

Is your home covered by your house insurance if the cleaner should cause any accidental damage to your home?

Will the cleaner come at the same time each week/ fortnight ? Not necessary to check if it is the same cleaner if you are interviewing one cleaner Will there be any cover if the cleaner is ill or on holiday? Who provides what cleaning materials?

A reputable cleaning company or agency should be happy to show you a copy of their third party liability insurance

Will the cleaner come at the same time each week/ fortnight ? Will it be the same cleaner each time ? Cover for sickness or holidays should be provided but it is wise to check Who provides what cleaning materials?

These are just some of the questions it would be important to ask or check before employing or hiring a cleaner for your home and I am sure you can think of a few of your own. Good Luck

Spring is in the air...

for all your travel needs

01524 761480

…and let’s hope it’s here to stay. This month see’s the clocks spring forward and how I welcome those lighter evenings. And if that doesn’t get people thinking about holidays then I don’t know what does.

It’s coming towards the end of the ski season shortly and I know for sure that customers will be ready to book for next year’s ski holidays to take advantage of the best deals, and not just for ski, but families hoping to find the free child places.

If you haven’t yet thought about what you’ll be doing for your holiday this year, let me give you a little inspiration;

Popular destinations for 2013

For summer, more and more people are discovering the beauty of Turkey with its numerous diverse resorts to choose from, it really is a gem to visit. The people are very friendly and welcoming and it’s still a very reasonably priced holiday destination with its favourable exchange rate, compared to some of the other Mediterranean resorts.

Then there is Croatia, still undiscovered by many but providing a great combination of history and beauty. Another non Euro destination providing great value and so much choice – 3 different airports allowing you to explore either the Istrian Riviera, Central Dalmatia or the Dubrovnik Riviera in the South. Cities, stunning coastline and beaches await.

And Egypt continues to be popular as a year round holiday destination, many hotels providing excellent all inclusive options and fun for all the family.

There are still a few package holidays around for Easter and May half term, but believe it or not despite Christmas only being 9 weeks behind us, people are also thinking of Christmas holiday breaks, already!

However, it pays to book in advance these days with many low cost flights increasing in price the closer to departure you travel. Once it’s booked, you can begin to count down the months and weeks whilst planning how you will make the most of your time away. Until next month, my very best wishes, Sharon

We offer our clients a completely unique photoshoot experience on many levels and are confident that there is nothing like this in Cumbria. Within the studio, on the incredibly spacious first floor, we are able to offer many various backdrops/sets therefore creating lots of different looks, rather than the usual white or black backgrounds so usually associated with studio photography. The different ‘areas’ feature fantastic decor and accessories which change frequently.

We specialise in making all women look and feel great! - So girls of ALL ages can come along and enjoy their photoshoot. We have our Covergirl shoot for girls, offering them makeup and a funky music filled studio to have fun in. What teenage girl isn’t going to love being made to feel like a model in a magazine? A similar idea will extend to the ever popular Sparkle parties for our much younger clients, where bubbles, dancing and anything sparkly will be the order of the day! Of course boys are included in our plans too! - There are some seriously cool dudes out there who we feel would love a really awesome photo of themselves for their bedroom wall! They can even bring along their scooters and skateboards and we can make them look

fantastic! We are of course still providing all kinds of portrait/family/baby/wedding photography and excited at the possibilities the new studio will bring in all of these areas.

With so much experience of making our female clients look incredible, we have been keen to introduce Boudoir Photography to our portfolio and have allocated the top floor of the new studio to being a beautiful and luxurious boudoir lounge, where our female clients can feel completely at ease in total privacy and comfort.

Following any of our photoshoots our clients are invited back to the studio to view their pictures in our state of the art viewing room, where they can relax with a drink and enjoy choosing their favourite images and finished products!

We look forward to welcoming you to our studio very soon!

Spring on Fast Forward

Unless you are lucky to find a treasure in the sales, it is often tricky to buy a decent jumper in February or a pair of shorts in August ......Fashion Sage, Christian Dior explains why....

"Fashion is always decided out of season. The winter collection is worked upon in the season of lilac and cherry blossom, the summer collection when the leaves or the first snow is falling. We couturiers are like poets. A little nostalgia is necessary for us.We like to dream of summer in the middle of winter and vice versa and it would be impossible for me to create a summer dress in the month of August" Christian Dior

1

I do love that the Designers need to dream to create the collections that delight us each season and I enjoy the thought that a dress or a coat might be the result of a vision of light and warmth on a dark dank day, or nostalgia for snow and hot chocolate by a roaring fire in the middle of summer. However it is slightly impractical and means the fashions that come into our shops in January are rarely suited to the weather on the streets and are only relevant to the wardrobes of those jetting off into the sunset.

Here at Two by Two we are unpacking boxes of summer clothes for the months ahead, while at the same time viewing the samples and placing orders for Autumn Winter 2013 and one step of us are the designers and fabric houses who are a l r e a d y planning ahead for this time next year.

3

2 16

Fashion is always looking forward and so for those of us eager to wear the spring fashions, even in March, we must also dream and be prepared to fight the winter blues by our own imaginative methods. Of course you can wear your bikini to bed and you can wear your flip flops in the shower, you can replace your usual moisturiser with after sun and treat yourself to a margarita at the cocktail hour and you can also try out some of these handy fashion tips to help you survive the gloomy days.

1. Monday: wear your summer dress with warm boots and a faux fur stole 2. Tuesday: White jeans are not your normal go to jeans for the darker months but can provide a refreshing change and will instantly remind you of summer. 3. Wednesday: Digital prints provide the perfect inspiration for dismal days, this shark t shirt by Oui reminds me of the Great Barrier Reef, perfect accessorised with goggles. 4. Thursday: Oubas Knitwear scarves are designed and made in Ulverston and make the perfect accessory for the British Springtime being toasty warm yet light as a feather. 5. Friday: Add a tropical twist to your regular hair style by having actual feathers put in your hair. This only takes a jiffy but can last for weeks‌ available at Lush Avenue on Stafford Street in Barrow. 6. Saturday: Chanel your inner parrot by wearing bold, block colours, cheer yourself and get the tropical feeling!

So what is Probate?

W

hen someone has died their Executors or Personal Representatives might have to apply for a Grant of Probate or a Grant of Letters of Administration so that they can administer the deceaseds estate. A Grant of Probate or a Grant of Letters of Administration is not always needed.

Only if the deceased has left land, a property, a bank account with a substantial amount of money or other investments might their Executors or Personal Representatives need to apply for a Grant of Probate or a Grant of Letters of Administration. A Grant of Probate or a Grant of Letters of Administration is a certificate issued by the Court to confirm that the Executor or Personal Representatives named on the Grant are legally appointed to administer the estate of the deceased. It confirms to those financial institutions with which the deceased had dealings that they can release the deceaseds assets to the persons named on the Grant.

A Grant of Probate is issued by the Court when the deceased left a valid will. It will confirm the name and address of the Executors named in the will of the deceased who are dealing with the administration of the deceaseds estate.

A Grant of Letters of Administration is issued by the Court when the deceased did not leave a valid will. It will confirm the name and address of the Personal Representatives of the deceased who are dealing with the administration of the deceaseds estate.

Would you like to be crowned Dalton Carnival queen?

Dalton Carnival Committee is looking for a carnival queen to represent the town for the big event on June 8. Dalton Carnival also needs ladies-in-waiting and two princesses - all the girls must be from Dalton. The carnival queen and ladies-in-waiting are to be aged 10 to 16, and the princesses six to 10. If you are interested, write a letter & email it to Val Robinson, the secretary of Dalton Carnival Committee. The letter should state why you would like to be carnival queen / a lady-in-waiting or a princess, and how you would help Dalton during your reign. Also give some general information about yourself including hobbies & anything you may be doing at present to help in the Dalton community. The letters should be emailed to welmarobinson@aol.com by March 15. By the end of March a date will be arranged for the candidates to have an informal chat with two independent people who will select the girls. The new carnival queen is due to be crowned at the end of April by last year’s carnival queen Aimee Iddon. The carnival queen will present dancing trophies to the successful dance schools at the carnival. Later in the summer she will also

present cheques to good causes that benefit from the carnival day. Mrs Robinson said they will be looking for a carnival queen who is confident and articulate, but she said some of the girls do grow in confidence during the experience. She said: “It’s amazing to see the girls become more confident. It is a great experience for them. They get their dresses made and they get to feel very special.” Interested girls and their families can also call Mrs Robinson on 07917 640025 for more details. Dont forget your letters should be sent to welmarobinson@aol.com by March 15.

LIFE PI Yann Martel

of

Life of Pi was published in 2001 and won the Man Booker Prize in 2002. It has now been made into a major film, released in December 2012, which has now been nominated for 11 Oscars. At the time of writing this review the Oscar winners have not yet been announced, but by the time this is printed we will all know how many it has won. I decided to review the book because the film may have sparked a bit of new interest which I would like to encourage. It is often the case that the book should be read before seeing the film and I suspect that is the case here, but it certainly is not a pre-requisite!! Piscine Molitor Patel grew up in the Indian town of Pondicherry. His family owned the local zoo. In the first part of this novel he tells us about his early life, his schooldays and his interest in a variety of religions. He also explains how and why he became known as Pi. We get to know him as a gentle and sensitive boy with a deep understanding of animals. Politics in India made Pi’s parents decide to leave Pondicherry and emigrate to Canada. They sailed on a Japanese freighter called Tsimtsum and took some of their animals with them as they had been sold to American zoos. Sadly the boat sank. The real adventure starts in the second part of the story. Pi manages to be thrown into a lifeboat and finds himself in the company of a zebra, a hyena, an orang-utan and a giant Bengal tiger called Richard

22

Parker. His adventures on the lifeboat make riveting reading. It is exciting, improbable and nerve-racking. I found myself forgetting to breathe during some of the action. He survives 227 days before washing up on the shore of Mexico. The third part, of this story takes place mainly in a Mexican hospital where Pi is questioned by Japanese officials who are trying to discover why the Tsimtsum sank. He tells them his story and they do not believe him. He tells them another story. The end is so shocking and unexpected that I will not say any more about it – I would hate to spoil it for anyone. This is a really gripping adventure story, extraordinary, entertaining and completely different. It is beautifully written. If at times you feel yourself becoming bogged down with the intricate and detailed descriptions please persevere – the surprising and thought provoking ending is worth waiting for. I have heard the film being described as a “must watch” - well I would say then that the book is most certainly a “must read”.
