LOCAL ARTISTS RAISE FUNDS FOR HOSPICE A beautiful original oil painting of a Lake District scene is being raffled to raise funds for St Mary’s Hospice in Ulverston. The painting ‘Great Langdale Beck’ by Ron Stacey is just one of many original paintings created by over 40 members of the Bardsea Schoolroom Art Group at its 2013 Bi-annual art exhibition which takes place Friday 23rd August –Thursday 29th August in the Schoolroom at Bardsea village, near Ulverston. Ron, who reached the semi-finals in Channel 4 TV’s national ‘Watercolour Challenge’, started the Bardsea Schoolroom Art Group in 1988 with just twelve members supported by nationally and internationally acclaimed tutors willing to share their techniques and secrets. These included painter Erik W Gleave, sculptor to The Queen, Glynn Potter, and noted pastellist Christopher Assheton-Stones. “All these tutors have had a great influence on our work,” says Ron,“and the Group is fortunate today to still have high calibre, locally and globally recognised tutors such as Lake Artist Society members Graham Twyford and Kevin Chester, as well as local artists Ken Allen and Lee Payne and watercolourist Doug Hyslop. Three art classes are held within the Schoolroom every week. Members meet on Mondays and Tuesdays between 10.00 and 14.00 and a Life Drawing Class is held on Friday evenings from 19.30 – 21.30. New members are welcome. To enter the draw, visitors can visit the Bardsea Schoolroom Art Group 2013 exhibition between 10.00 and 17.00 (opposite The Ship public house) over the August Bank Holiday week-end and following week. Entrance is £1, which includes a programme and refreshments. NOTES Ron Stacey was Artist in Residence running Day Care Art Classes at St Mary’s Hospice from 1990-1996 to help patients create and exhibit their own artworks either at the hospice, or in the Schoolroom at Bardsea. Ron is also a member and previous Chairman of The Ulverston Society of Artists. Death with a Will: A guide
Last month we continued to look at the probate process which is the term given to the legal mechanism of administering the estate of a deceased person. If you missed last months article you Hannah Elizabeth Bell LLB Director can view it (along with Photo: Powder & Paint Photography all of the previous issues of the Pinfold) here: www.thepinfold.com In this issue we finish our review of the probate process by looking at the application for the grant of probate and what to do when you receive it. Continued from issue 17…
4. Complete the Tax Return The tax return that the Executor(s) have to complete and submit to HM Revenue and Customs will depend on the size of the estate and whether or not there is any liability to Inheritance Tax. When there is tax to pay, this must be done before the Grant of Probate will be issued. If the deceased has cash assets to meet the tax payment due their bank may release funds to meet the tax liability before the issue of the Grant of Probate. Otherwise the Executor(s) may have to arrange bridging finance. Once the Executor(s) have completed the tax return it is sent along with a cheque for the amount due to the Capital Taxes Office. The Capital Taxes Office will in return confirm direct with the Probate Registry that the return has been filed with them and that any tax due has been paid.
5. Application for the Grant of Probate To apply for the Grant of Probate the Executor(s) must first swear an Oath. If a Solicitor is representing the Executor(s) this will be arranged by the Solicitor. Alternatively the Executor(s) will visit the district Probate Registry and swear the oath in front of a officer of the Court. The Oath is a statement of truth in which the Executor(s) confirm that the Will delivered to the Probate Registry is he last Will of the deceased and that they will administer the deceased’s estate properly. The Oath
and Original Will are then sent to the Probate Registry.
6. Receipt of the Grant Once the Grant has been issued by the court the Executor(s) have the legal power to finalise the estate. In finalising the estate the Executor(s) may follow the following steps: a. Realise all creditors of the estate by placing an advertisement in the local paper and/or the London Gazette inviting any creditors to make themselves known. b. Write to all financial institutions which whom the deceased had dealings and organise the release of the deceased’s assets. c. Ensure all debts of the estate are paid. d. Gift any specific legacies set out in the will of the deceased. e. Pay any pecuniary legacies set out in the Will of the deceased. f. Complete the deceased’s income tax and capital gains tax returns for the tax year until the date of death and finalise any dealings with HM Revenue and Customs. g. Distribute assets in accordance with the Will or in accordance with any Deed of Variation which might have been prepared post death. You hear a horrifying scream as your seven year old enters the room with a flying kick, grabs the dog and wrestles him to the ground. Once you’ve got over the blind panic that the Summer holidays are almost here, what are you going to do for six weeks! Have you thought about channelling these urges into a martial arts class? Activities like Jiu-Jitsu at Barrow Jiu-Jitsu Club (BJJC) are a fun way for boys and girls to become active and improve focus and discipline. Some people will tell you that this kind of activity encourages violent behaviour, in fact, it is quite the opposite. BJJC has members with learning difficulties, like ADHD, whose parent’s state that this type of activity focuses on self-control and concentration, often under-developed in ADHD children and has a positive effect on other aspects of their life.
Bjjc offer one hour classes that start and end with a bow to the Sensei (Teacher) and continues with a warm up and basic skills like punching, kicking

and break falls, each requiring concentration and strict attention.
Jiu-Jitsu is a non-competition martial art and uses a belt system, starting with red and moving through to black. The children progress by working through a syllabus, once completed each belt they have a grading (test) in front of Sensei. This gives each child a sense of achievement and helps to learn to set goals. More than this, respect is the most important principle taught at BJJC from the bowing to standing still waiting for the next instruction. Research has shown that this carries over in school and home life and has shown to help behaviour and improve learning.
Maybe it isn’t the scream you hear during the holidays; instead it is “Mum, I’m bored! I’ve got nothing to do!” At some point during the long holiday every child finds that they might want to do something productive. Alongside BJJC is School’s Out, an activity centre for children aged 8-16. On offer are crafts such as Jewellery Making and Woodwork, Animation and Filming and Drama and Sports. Each designed for endless fun where they can express themselves creatively and feel a sense of achievement. School’s Out is run by friendly staff and managed by a teacher with over 15 years’ experience. Older children have the opportunity to gain valuable qualifications outside the school system in something that interests them or is not available on a school timetable.

Please come and pick some beautiful sweet peas.
Is the polite request to passers-by from an old man with grey hair, stood in The Gill Ulverston. He understandably favours pretty young women – and his excuse is that they’ve got young children with them who might be looking for a children’s park.
“They are only a hundred yards away . . . And they are free. Free Free Free.
This man is Geoff Dellow or more formerly Dr Geoffrey Dellow who took his first job out of university at Glaxo doing research in the Process Investigation Department (PID for short) as a Chemical Engineer on £900 per year and was able to buy 4 Beech Bank for . . .wait for it £900 – one year’s salary. His first lab assistants were Len Elliot and the chain smoking ideas man Harry Stables – his favourite trick was turning a strip of steel into genuine silver (coating) with his magic solution – an unofficial Glaxo research activity. Within three years he had married a Barrow lass, and invented a new patentable process and with the proceeds of his house sale for £1,400 went off on an adventure to America with no job but lots of possibilities. There he worked in San Francisco for Shell Research, earned a pot of gold, returned to buy The Falls just north of Hoad – and there’s another story.

Back to the sweet peas: they have been grown and planted by volunteers in Mill Dam Park which no one seems to know about. - It’s just beyond the Health Centre and has sweet peas beginning to grow to cover the whole side of the park. Geoff reckons 10,000 of them will grow this summer and they need to be picked.
Two weeks ago a dedicated group of volunteers worked in the park for most of a Sunday to put pottery back up on the new fence that had been made there in previous years by children parents and roaming non artistic respectables. Whilst some screwed the pottery to the fence others put 400 bedding plants in that had been donated by David Gardiner at the market plant stall. Others munched delicious cake and scones made by parents specially and drank tea prepared on the spot. Others caught up on news from people they hadn’t seen for a while. Others watered the newly planted flowers with water from a hose kindly provided from a neighbour’s house. So find out where Mill Dam Park is and come and pick a bunch of your favourite flowers. Believe it or not, you’ll be rendering a public service

Design your life, don’t just let it happen I read an interesting article recently by a great agent of change. He was talking about the life's too short mentality that people have and use to justify eating rubbish and over indulging, you know the ones, the "oh life’s too short to diet" brigade, life’s too short not to eat and drink to excess today. Let’s turn that on its head, life's too short not to live it to the full, embrace everything and be healthy. By eating and drinking anything and everything, over indulging and not taking care life will definitely be shorter than it could be and the quality of that life will soon be compromised.
How easy is change?
Change in itself is not easy, as much of what we do we do without much thought and through habit. Our habits are often governed by the people around us, our family, friends and is wrapped up in social pressure, advertising and education. Making changes to your eating habits or behaviour will affect everyone around you and they may not be as helpful or supportive of your goals as you would want.
A number of years ago my life was at a point where it could have been cut short. I didn't use that as an excuse to over indulge and eat and drink rubbish. I used that as a life’s too short not to live it in the now and hope for a future. For the future to be healthy for me and for many it meant really embracing change to a healthy active lifestyle.
Now I get up every morning wondering, what will I do with this energy and good health, what can I do today. Anything is the answer, Often we don’t realise that we have mixed anything I want, I am not restricted by my feelings about making changes in our weight or health or energy. What will you do behaviour. Take a few minutes to think about today? and list the benefits and drawbacks of changing your nutritional habits and losing weight. If you want to make some changes you might want to go through the following questions, maybe adapt them to other situations that require you to change:Here are some examples: Benefit of Not Making Changes I can keep eating the way I want without

having to work on making any changes in my life. Benefit of Making Changes I won’t have to worry about the health risks of being inactive and eating poorly. Drawback of Not Making Changes If I don’t make changes now, things might get worse. Drawback of Making Changes It might be hard for me to get support from my family and friends to do this. They’re used to me the way I am.
Now rate each of your answers on a scale of 1 to 5: 1 = Not important 2 = Somewhat important 3 = Important 4 = Very important 5 = Extremely important Having a realistic goal and knowing WHY you are doing this is really important and so having a dream or goal board is a good idea or even just a simple image that you can see every day and focus on is important.
To Do List
Identify your goals Have a plan Understand what changes you need to make to get the results you want, Identify the difficulties and situations that might occur to stop you reaching your goals and be prepared to deal with them. Get a coach to help you with the process
Good luck with your changes and remember to take one step at a time, challenge one habit at a time and stay focused on the end result.

Medieval Fair Furness Abbey Fellowship
F
and the return of the Abbot’s treasure
urness Abbey Fellowship, a local support group set up in 2012 is pleased to announce their first event to be held in the grounds of the illustrious Furness Abbey. The Medieval Fair will be held on Saturday 31st August 2013 from 10am to 5pm. The event will coincide with a welcome return of the Abbot’s ring and crosier for the day and a number of exciting activities are planned. The Fellowship is working closely with English Heritage to increase visitor numbers and place the abbey firmly on the national heritage map.The abbey founded in 1127 by King Stephen became one of the most significant and wealthy Cistercian monasteries in England. Its sphere of influence ranged across the north west of England and included religious houses in the Isle of Mann and Ireland. Its power and wealth arose from the wool trade which was the equivalent in the Middle Ages of the oil industry today. Its wealth attracted Henry V111 to target it as the first large abbey to be dissolved and the

surrender came in 1537. A fantastic discovery was made recently of the fully articulated skeleton of an abbot, buried with his ring and crosier. The unusual find has come at exactly the right time, after ongoing intensive conservation work to the historic fabric of the building, and it is hoped it will attract many more visitors to the abbey. The Medieval Fair will be an added attraction and complements the display of the artefacts well. An explanation of the artefacts,

excavation and buildings will be available, provided by English Heritage. A Living History Group-The Iron Shepherds will be displaying aspects of life in medieval times, with a village, craft and weapons demonstrations and displays throughout the day. Local artist Patrick Corbett will be demonstrating illuminated writing, Iain McNicoll will reprise his character, Brother John, demonstrating the use of herbs, Local poet Geraldine Green and Children’s author Gill Jepson will give readings in the Chapter House, Owen Jones will demonstrate traditional basket making and there will be music from an early Tudor group of musicians, the Dorian Players. There will be many other activities, with trails, quizzes and puppet shows for children around the abbey
and tea, coffee and cakes will be available from Abbey Mill and a hog roast from Hartley’s of Dalton. The Fellowship hope this will be the first of many such events and anyone wishing to donate or support in any way can contact them at furnessabbeyfellowship@gmail.com
