Distributing 7000 copies a month June is always a pretty month with lots of flowers in the garden and we have finally warmed up and can spend a little more time outdoors. The Carnival and festival season starts, so we have the Dalton Carnival on the 8th of June to look forward to. This month we have an introduction to hen keeping and fresh eggs. Our regular travel and legal advice, a how to eat healthy column and an optometrist with new state of the art equipment to keep our eyes in tip top order. The summer holidays are looming, if you have any activities or events on for the summer holidays I would love to hear from you as I am going to be putting a what to do in the summer holiday feature together for the July issue.
I would like to thank Lorraine Oates, Powder & Paint Photography for the editors photograph.

Fresh means Fresh
We believe in top quality eggs that are laid from birds that are happy and in first class condition. Hens that are singing to you from early in the morning are happy hens. Feeding and welfare are important factors. To keep your hens happy and laying feed them a good quality layers pellet with a small amount of mixed corn. Feed twice daily. They also benefit from potato skins, boiled greens and oyster shell grit. Add cod liver oil to the feed once a week and you will have a well-balanced diet for any laying hen. Poultry should never be fed meat of any kind. With free range birds the egg yolk should be a darker yellow and not the pale colour that you find in some outlets. When buying free range eggs, if possible, question the condition of the bird and the age of the egg. Some outlets sell eggs as ‘fresh’ when in fact they may be as much as two weeks old. Although eggs do have a good life span it is always better to buy them when you know they have not been left in the nest long. We are a small family run company and supply the best

Death with a Will: A guide
Last month we began to look at the Probate process which is the term given to the legal mechanism of administering the estate of a deceased person. If you missed last months Hannah Elizabeth Bell LLB Director article you can view it Photo: Powder & Paint Photography (along with all of the previous issues of the Pinfold) here: www.thepinfold.com Anyone can be appointed as an Executor by a deceased person’s will, so it might just be worth your while to grab a brew and enjoy the read! Continued from issue 16… How to Proceed
Once it has been decided that the Will is the last one which the decease made, the Will is legally valid and the appointed Executor(s) are going to act the following issues should be considered: (This list is non-exhaustive) 1. Is there any reason why the Probate Registry may question the Will or why any person may contest the content of the Will. 2. Is there sufficient money in the deceased’s estate to meet any debts and tax liabilities of the deceased? 3. Are there any assets of the deceased which are outside England and Wales? If there are consideration needs to be made about the formalities involved in realising those assets. 4. Was anybody financially dependant on the deceased? Additionally the administrator should also consider whether the deceased’s estate could be subject to any other claim under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975. 5. Is the estate going to be subject to Inheritance Tax? If so are there any exemptions of relief’s which might apply.
released before the Grant of Probate has been granted.
2. Consider the family requirements At this stage it is best to first consider what the family want to happen with the estate monies and how the estate can be administered in the most tax efficient way. If all parties who are entitled to benefit under the Will are in agreement a Deed of Variation can be prepared to alter the way in which the estate is distributed amongst the deceased’s beneficiaries. This can allow for those not strictly entitled to benefit to be written in as beneficiaries. A Deed of Variation must be completed within two years of the death.
Consideration at this stage allows the Executor(s) to ensure that any tax reliefs and or exemptions are used. It also allows for the beneficiaries to arrange their own financial affairs to mitigate any future liability to tax and or reduce the impact any inheritance may have on their entitlement to benefits.
3.The Executor(s) need to value the estate In order to consider the above the Executor(s) should seek to find out the value of the estate by gathering information about the assets of the deceased. The Executor(s) should firstly identify all of the assets of the deceased. Next they should collect information about the values of those assets. This is done by writing to the various financial institutions with which the deceased had dealings and by having other assets valued by competent professional surveyors. 4. Complete the Tax Return… To be continued next month
Lakes Legal Limited offers a comprehensive Fixed-Fee will writing service so you know exactly how much it is going to cost you from the very beginning; No hidden costs and No VAT!

The Next Steps
1. Dependants If the deceased has left financially dependant persons arrangements may need to be made to meet their living expenses. The process of obtaining a Grant of Probate can be protracted and so the executor(s) may need to contact the deceased’s bank to arrange for assets to be www.facebook.com/thepinfold

EYE CARE EXCELLENCE @ LYN SAVAGE
Tracey York-Andrews: Director, Optometrist, Schoolvision & Contact Lens Practitioner of EYE CARE EXCELLENCE @ LYN SAVAGE, Introduces state of the art Eye Care Technology, In the heart of Ulverston.
EYE CARE EXCELLENCE @ LYN SAVAGE could be considered to be one of the counties most progressive optical practices. It has become the first eye care practice in the whole of Cumbria to offer its patients the groundbreaking OPTOMAP retinal scan as part of their comprehensive routine eye examination.
Lyn Savage (BScOptom. MBCO) opened the practice in Ulverston about 30 years ago. It is a well established independent practice, focusing on quality eye care at affordable prices. Tracey York-Andrews (MCOptom(UK) DOptom(SA) Dip Sc.Vision. M.ASvP. AUDT(USA)) opened her own practice on the other side of the world; in Johannesburg, South Africa. In 1998, Dolland & Aitchison head hunted Tracey, offering her a position and relocation to Milton Keynes. She became well established in the area, and her South African patients would still come and see her, for their sight tests, if they were flying into London for any reason. After a trip to the Lake District, and falling in love with the gorgeous area, a move to Cumbria by Tracey was eminent. Tracey is very passionate about providing excellent eye care and out of this EYE CARE EXCELLENCE @ LYN SAVAGE evolved.
This practice is unique in the fact that they are the only OPTOMAP & registered SCHOOLVISION practioners in the entire region. OPTOMAP is state of the art retinal scanning. This ground breaking technology allows EYE CARE EXCELLENCE to scan the retina as part of a routine comprehensive sight test. It allows the best in patient care as it quickly and easily (without eye drops) provides high resolution, digital images of about 82% of the retina in a single image, compared to the
12
www.thepinfold.com
competitors who can only image about 15% of the retina. The OPTOMAP retinal exam enhances the clinical abilities to detect disease at an earlier stage (especially if its not in the complete centeral retinal region). This is critical in terms of treatment & monitoring.
SCHOOLVISION helps to beat Dyslexia. This practice has always had a passion to help those with dyslexia, with Lyn using coloured filters for many years. Tracey has taken this much further, achieving a Distinction in a Diploma in Schoolvision, which is the further studies & qualification to help beat Dyslexia. The amazing improvement in patient performance has been truly overwhelming!
In early May the practice celebrated & officially launched these specialist services with an Open Day. All were welcomed into the practice where bubbly, fruit juice, chocolates and gift bags where in abundance. The positive response was heart warming & rewarding as people were made aware of the fabulous team and services at EYE CARE EXCELLENCE.
Offering NHS & private sight tests & specs to suit all budgets and tastes, its worth trying the EYE CARE EXCELLENCE experience. "Because we care at EYE CARE EXCELLENCE".

e Benefits of Cutting out the Commute The Clock Tower Business Centre in the tranquil hamlet of Haverthwaite offers people the opportunity to replace raised blood pressure and the release of stress hormones caused by a daily commute with the ability to enjoy lunch breaks by the banks of the River Leven, walks through woods and encounters with wildlife.
The relaxed surrounds of the iconic Clock Tower building in Haverthwaite, with its riverside setting and glorious peace and quiet, no traffic queues on access routes and even opportunities to commute by bicycle and take advantage of shower rooms for cycle-to-work tenants is a world apart for those people used to the grind of the daily commute whether by car or public transport.
As well all the stress-free plusses, there are no negatives, the office accommodation being luxurious, finished to the highest standards, located in a building rich in history and heritage and even heated by green power generated by the River Leven. Parking is plentiful, free and on-site and there are plenty of local amenities, as well as a nature reserve, Roudsea Wood, just one-mile’s walk away. All of these factors add up to an environment conducive to better concentration, enhanced quality of life, reduced staff absence and lower levels of stress in the workplace. Proprietor Julius Barratt says: “We cannot put a price upon our health or our quality of life and we are offering tangible improvements in these aspects of day-to-day living. When it comes to cost
control, cutting out the cost of parking permits and charges makes absolute sense. Attracting employees to work in our tranquil, yet beautifully equipped environment will not be hard, particularly if they can cut their expenditure on petrol, as well as spending fewer hours sitting in traffic jams in the car. It all adds up to a very persuasive argument to relocate from the city and work in the countryside, particularly when that is only 18 miles from the M6 and just 10 minutes from the nearest train station, making Manchester only 1.5 hours away and London just over 3 hours away.
The Clock Tower Business Centre now offers the use of a meeting room; originally set up for tenants and now available to non-tenants. This meeting room can accommodate up to 14 people for a meeting or up to 30 for a presentation. Tea and coffee are available and lunch can be arranged.
Anyone suffering from the syndromes associated with commuting and no longer able to bear the cost of escalating petrol charges can find out more about The Clock Tower Business Centre at www.clocktoweroffices.co.uk or by calling Dickon Knight on 015395 58555.

A week in the life of an eco warrior….. Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening. -Coco Chanel Always ahead of her time, Coco Chanel knew that the way we dress is not just about what looks pretty or what we can find to put over our heads in the morning but also a reflection of who we are and what is important to us. Yet Chanel couldn’t have imagined at the turn of the 20th century that a hundred years on we might be considering the actual sky, the weather and the environment we live in when stocking our wardrobes. In the 21st century, shopping has become an ethical and environmental dilemma. It’s difficult to consider even a t shirt without asking yourself, what is it made of? Who has made it and how old were they? How many air miles and carbon emissions has it produced....... all that and you haven’t even got to the fitting room, never mind does my bum look big in it or what’s my credit card bill like! Nevertheless, these environmental and ethical issues are important since the fashion industry is one of the largest in the industrialised economy which uses 25% of the world’s pesticides and
20
exacerbates poverty across the developing world. In response to these concerns eco clothes have steadily grown in popularity since the 1990’s. At the outset they tended to have a bit of an oatmeal like appearance and lacked fashion gravitas, however as c o n s u m e r interest in the sector has grown they have transformed and these days you don’t have to sacrifice style to stay sustainable. If you care what you wear, there is a great choice of clothes made from organic raw materials that have been grown without the aid of pesticides, like cotton silk or wool or other plant textiles like hemp, nettle or bamboo that
grow abundantly without the use of pesticides. There are also innovative recycled textiles available which can be made from plastic bottles, soy bean hulls, even coffee grinds. It usually goes hand in hand that if the manufacturer has considered the environment in production they will have considered the garment workers too and will have ensured they worked in a healthy environment and were paid a fair fee for their time. If the garment hasn’t travelled half way around the world to reach you, all the better, the carbon cycle hasn’t been compromised either. It’s not always possible to tick all the eco boxes and find something you love which you can afford, nevertheless, eco clothes are the clothes of the future not only because consumer demand for them is growing but because they will be in our future literally …..they last longer than the other clothes thanks to the care that is taken to make them and because the fabrics used to make them are more durable. Eco clothes may cost more than other clothes, but think of them as tomorrows vintage, beautiful garments that can be passed on like the heirlooms your grandmother gave you. 1. Wear organic and save on laundry with a reversible Seasalt tunic...just reverse when dirty! 2. Organic cotton is not only stronger and more durable than regular cotton but is softer and more comfortable too. Mudd and Water’s organic cotton is the softest we’ve felt yet. 3 The environment is central to both the design and production of Earth Kind Originals simple organic cotton dress’s which are designed in Cornwall and made in Turkey. 4. Put a sting in your tail with a dress made from nettles by German clothing label Privat Sachen. 5. Make do and mend in the manner of your Mothers and Grandmothers. Great ideas and resources available at The Ulverston Scrapstore, The Old Library 17-19 Cavendish St, Ulverston.
