It's Spring Cleaning time!
Spring cleaning as a phrase has an interesting history to tell. The practice of Spring Cleaning whilst not exclusively is especially prevalent in climates with a cold winter. In Winter we baton down the hatches, we seal up that draft, and clad ourselves warm for the Winter. At last the winter is breaking, and we have a new stride in our walk, we battled the elements and there is a fresh breeze in the air. We are victorious. Spring time is here. Of course we are not the only ones celebrating.... Birds sing out, flowers declare their beauty. It's great to be alive.
March and April are getting warm enough to start opening those windows and doors ( but not warm enough for insects to be a problem). Fresh winds appear and help in moving all the dust.
Spring cleaning is that fresh revelation of wanting to continue anew. Over the years houses have been shaken clean from the drapes, carpets, hard flooring and upholstery. The winter is broken, we are ready to come out and declare it.
To celebrate this new season Eco Extreme Clean would like to help Furness households by offering our Spring Cleaning Offer in March and April. So what's covered with this offer? Carpets, curtains, upholstery and hard floors spring cleaning at a deep level. Twenty percent off for the first twenty customers. To take advantage of this Spring Clean Offer simply call Rob on 01229 465366 or 07401531142 and quote Rob's Spring Clean. Twenty percent on already competitive prices is not to be missed. I look forward at aiming to exceed your expectations of thorough deep cleaning.

Feel good about what you wear‌
..Is the mantra for Cornish organic clothing label EKO; a capsule collection of casual pieces made from a range of eco fibres. Inspired by the colours of the Cornish coast and with Japanese sculptural shape in mind the EKO brand has developed a range of easy to wear must haves which will stand the test of time. For the lowdown on the brand we quizzed EKO Founder and Designer Helen Davies‌ 2x2: What was the driving force behind starting the EKO brand? Helen: I started EKO after working as a commercial Fashion Designer in London for 4 years and wanting to relocate back down to Cornwall. I think living by the coast is in my blood and running my own business seemed like a natural move as I grew up helping out in my parents business. After travelling all over the world to factories and signing off big commercial collections I felt there was a gap in the market for a simple and natural womenswear label that promotes wellbeing from the inside out.
8
2x2: How did you find the transition from working in the city back to home turf? Helen: I am so glad I made the jump from the city, as I no longer wake up and jump onto a jam packed train while slurping a strong coffee, and my day now starts with simple morning yoga stretches and walking buster (the EKO dog) along the cliffs. I do miss the fast-paced lifestyle and exciting design hub of London, but to have the beautiful Cornish landscape at my doorstep is a price worth paying. 2x2: What are the best thing and the worst thing about running your own fashion label? Helen: The worst thing is the stress of knowing that you are responsible for every decision made, and every risk you take could make or break you. I come from a very creative back ground, so number crunching, sales forecasts and cash flow projections do not come naturally, but knowing the viability of a collections cash flow is vital. On the flip side, every day in your own business is different and the big challenge of
www.thepinfold.com
growing a fashion label is a really exciting journey, from developing new eco fabrics to creating a team of talented people to help me. 2x2: What is your proudest EKO moment? Helen: In 2011 we were awarded the most innovative brand at the Ethical Fashion Forum and in the same year launched our new collection at the Country Living show and won best new brand in the show, selected by the Country Living editor Suzie Smith, who is now a regular customer at EKO. But at the same show I had one of my very first customers come to the stand in her Emily Jane Dress (a signature style at EKO) wanting to meet me and tell me how much she loves the brand, which was just priceless. 2x2: How many people do you employ? Helen: There are 3 of us now at the EKO HQ and I use freelancers for other aspects not currently covered by the team. Oh yes and Buster the working cocker spaniel dog, so I guess that’s 4, as his expertise in forcing us to take dog walking breaks and making us smile every day is a big part of EKO. 2x2: Who are your fashion heroes? Helen: It has to be the Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake as his use of sculptural shape, creative pattern cutting and passion for innovation in manufacturing processes, means he has developed a name as a timeless fashion icon, which I really admire. 2x2: If you won the lottery and could afford not to work would you? Helen: Maybe predictable but yes as I love creating and couldn’t imagine doing anything else. You would still find me pottering around in the studio playing with fabric, if I am not sneaking out for a quick surf. I always feel humble that I do what I love as a job and live somewhere that inspires me every day. 2x2: One thing you’ve never done that you really want to do? Helen: I love travelling and the child like feeling of discovering new places. So I would really like to bring my love of travel, yoga and surf together with EKO, to create a charity that promotes wellbeing in other parts of the world that are less privileged. I don’t know what the outcome would be, but I think it could be a really positive project. The new collection of EKO is available at Two by Two 52 Market Street Ulverston LA12 7LS T 01229 480703 Ulverston this month. sarah@thepinfold.com

MARRAKECH
Hello everyone, I do hope you have not been blown away since last month’s edition of Pinfold; what an incredible weather front we have experienced. Last month, I had some clients head off to Marrakech for a mid-winter break and what a fantastic time they had. In February, to be welcomed by blue skies and a warm 20 degrees and to be able to enjoy this from the rooftop terrace of your Riad is very appealing in my eyes. At Travel Counsellors, we have access to some fabulous, small, family run Riads right in the Medina so you can be at the very heart of the city and all it has to offer, but escape to an oasis of calm in minutes. Some Riads offer extras such as cookery courses. There is an early start to head to the markets with the cookery teacher to buy your ingredients, before returning to the Riad to be taught how to create authentic dishes to enjoy later that day. And perhaps you will buy a few extra spices to recreate your dish at home?

For families there are properties outside of the Medina, with larger pools and more space for the children to enjoy. It’s only a short flight away from the UK – around 3.5 hours and there are some very reasonable low cost flight options at this time of year. With temperatures ranging from mid teens to mid twenties in our winter/spring time, it’s a pleasant climate and a vibrant and cultural destination to consider. After hearing lots of great feedback recently, I’ve added it to my list. The question is - will you? Until next month, when the destination feature will be Abu Dhabi and Dubai, I send you my best wishes, Sharon.

My name is Rebekah Claire Matthews and I was born in Ulverston, Cumbria in1995. In 2011 I was introduced to the world of Encaustic Art by a local Craft and Glass specialist Marilyn Hale, and was well and truly hooked! A few days later I bought all the equipment needed to get started - waxes, card, and of course..... an
iron! Yes the majority of my work is produced using a simple iron!! The comments and enthusiasm shown by those who have seen my work encouraged me to turn this enjoyable hobby into a thriving business! Encaustic Art is an ancient form of painting which uses melted beeswax to which coloured pigments have been added. This technique was notably used in the Fayum mummy portraits from Egypt around 100-300 AD. Today the wax is melted by the heat of the iron and transfered to a special heat resistant card where my imagination is then allowed to run and explore, creating endless unique and original paintings. SPRING
Every time the sun comes out, there’s a big cheer. It’s a very welcome visitor even if it only stays for an hour. It encourages us to think forward to the fact that Spring has just got to arrive soon: in March, or at the very latest in May. Even now the daffodils in Mill Dam Park are peeping through the far beds: the beds that see the sun most. In the greenhouse one hundred specially chosen sweet peas plants are growing well with at least ten leaves: each ready for a mad burst of energy to reach ten feet up and cover the whole fencing on the right of the park – even more impressive than they did last year.
So Spring is certainly going to give us a lift. It may however come from people rather than the weather. Soon in early May the Flags will be out all over the town. These lively creatures have a lovely cheeky will of their own, responding to the slightest breeze and only just restrained in high wind. A video on Youtube “Hear comes the sun” says it all. These flags put spring into our step: visitors from all over the UK come to rediscover Ulverston and its surrounding area with the internationally renown Printfest in the Coro at the beginning of May.
18
The Flags are just one of the things introduced into the town by John Fox and Sue Gill. We’ve now accepted the idea of putting flags up for a fortnight for no reason other than we like it. Another activity they introduced was the Lantern Procession. Why do we like it? Because we all create it ourselves, some rather madly in our front or back rooms – in some case the whole house is dominated and the final ‘work of art’ takes shape the afternoon of the parade. Our kids proudly march around the streets with their creations as do the bigger kids that have made something particularly wild, large and unusual.
The Ulverston Super Saturday Markets have been a big success with the encouragement of local bands, drummers and performers who bring other creative forms of local entertainment to our town scene. Even our local business communities, shops like Loopy and Unique Image have brought their creative thinking to encourage people from a wide area to visit Ulverston to explore the expression of their craft skills in their own homes.
Art also breaks out in the form of pottery made, often in the spring, by children and adults who discover, as they did making Lanterns, that actually they are both creative and artistic. The pottery on Gill Banks railings
www.thepinfold.com
still raises a smile on walkers both local and Cumbria Way destined. Should we not join the people like those in Hackney that put energy into livening up their own streets and public places.Time perhaps to attract visitors this Spring not only because of our outgoing friendship, but because our creativity produces so many things that once again give us all a lift? Flags, Lanterns, Music, Dance, Pottery and Crafts have a very special ingredient – many say it’s something useless and can be done without - Creative Art. However it encourages vital human characteristics; self esteem and proactivity. It is a wonderful alternative to frustration and depression.

Thank you SO much for our insulated, automated Garage Door. From initial advice through to the completed product your staff and service were A1!! I would not hesitate to recommend A Holdens

...A Holdens are THE best in the area. After all this time and out of all the windows supplied we have only had one sealed unit replaced. Even this was completed under warranty, at no cost to ourselves. P Clarke, Windspoint, Ulverston

We recently replaced all our existing Windows and Doors. We used A Holdens as we saw the quality products that had been installed at my mother’s property. Following the high quality of workmanship we decided to have our Guttering and Fascias replaced and also a new Automatic Garage Door. We were delighted with all the work undertaken and have no hesitation in recommending A Holdens.

...please pass on a BIG thanks to your workforce refreshingly tidy & hard-working! K Roberts, Walney

...your team turned up on time and carried out the work quickly and efficiently. The quality of the workmanship was exceptional, in contrast to the existing double glazing. Your staff removed the old window and installed the new, making barely a scatch on the wallpaper. Chris Coles, Walney
