The Mindfulness Revolution

“The mind is like an umbrella. It doesn’t work unless it’s open”. Frank Zappa.

There’s a lot to be said for the wisdom of our ancestors. Sentiments like “Mind how you go”, “There’s more to folk than meets the eye” and “Don’t judge a book by its cover” could all be said to come from the rich tradition of Mindfulness that has been practised for around 3000 years. Unfortunately, we don’t always practise what we preach (there’s another one) and these little lessons in a line are often heard but not heeded. Mindfulness is the term given to living in the present, noticing what is happening now, unhindered by the stresses and anxieties that come from dwelling on the past and free from unrealistic fantasies and dreams about the

4

future. When we do this, we live life more fully and we don’t miss anything. “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans”. John Lennon In order to be mindful in our every-day life, we meditate. Mindfulness meditation enables us to notice what we are doing with our minds. It is like the shoes that protect our feet. Meditation protects our minds. Of course, we need past experience to inform and guide us. The child who is taught not to put their hand in the fire needs to know it can burn, but often this traps us into thinking in a certain way, and we become judgmental, prejudiced, fear-driven, conditioned by habits and the influences of the past. Understanding and using fire changed us from being animals into civilised human beings, so because fire burns does not mean to say that fire is always bad. Conditioned thinking can turn a full colour world into black and white.

www.facebook.com/thepinfold

So I ask you to imagine… …a life that is open to everything that comes its way, without fear or the need to control everything (and everyone). … being able to deal with what life throws at you, with resilience and wisdom. … the kind of thinking that is positive and empathic without the “stinking thinking” barriers of negative thoughts and feelings like stubbornness and pride. … living life compassionately, recognising that all human beings are simply trying to be happy the best way they know how. It is possible, but it needs practice. I’ve been practising for many years now, but still often feel like a beginner because my ego is a crafty animal. But we can make significant changes quite quickly. With Wellseeing Mindfulness training, delegates, after a taster session, report stillness, calmness and wellbeing. The two half day sessions of an Introduction to Mindfulness lead delegates to say that they wished they’d been taught this in school, and why weren’t they? (Indeed). Those who do the 8 week programme say that it quite simply changes their life. A current client reports 35% reduction in absenteeism since the training. Are you ready for mindfulness? Try these thought checks: How many times a day do I find myself moaning about: a. Myself b. My spouse c. Other relatives d. The weather (ok I’ll forgive you that one) e. My neighbours f. My colleagues g. My life h. Other When I get angry or jealous, am I aware of it? Whom do I hurt? Can I handle my emotions? Am I always right? Are all emotions good?

Do I ever say any of the following phrases (or similar)? a. I am what I am and proud of it. b. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. c. I’m not changing for you or for anyone. If you’re now interested enough to want to know how to make some changes to your self-awareness and self- esteem, you may wish to know more. A course in Mindfulness is an investment in your happiness and the happiness of those around you. When you think of the damage our thoughts and mental attitudes do, it should be compulsory life insurance. We don’t think twice about protecting our children, our houses and our financial futures. So why think twice about protecting our own minds? BRAIN FACTS: The brain changes with mindfulness meditation inducing the “relaxation response” that alters metabolism, heart rate, respiration, blood pressure and brain chemistry. Practising mindfulness psychology has shown that one can reduce chronic pain, manage stress, counteract depression, control substance abuse and change suicidal behaviour. COURSES PROGRAMME 2014

Best ever opportunity to “create with inspiration” at the home of a “giant” of the Victorian age As John Ruskin’s love of the countryside, art and his commitment to sustainable ways of living become daily more relevant, the opportunity to “live the Ruskin experience” at his former Brantwood home is better than ever for 2014. This year Brantwood is offering a wider range of “Creating with inspiration” courses, all with relevance to Ruskin’s ground-breaking views on art and the world around him, in this inspirational setting on the shore of Coniston Water in the Lake District. And with The Lodge, built by Ruskin more than 140 years ago, now refurbished and offering bed and breakfast accommodation for up to nine people, visitors can truly immerse themselves in Ruskin’s world, expanding their horizons, deepening their knowledge or learning new skills with expert tutors in great company. What better inspiration for painting flowers than the beautiful gardens of Brantwood? What better way to learn craft techniques than with the natural materials found in around this glorious 250 acres estate and lakeshore? What more inspirational place than Brantwood to stimulate your creative writing? This year there are two exciting new courses added to the programme, which runs between April and November – Life Drawing with popular art tutor, Sally Bamber, and Spiritual Reflections with Brantwood Director, Howard Hull. The former is a one-day practical hands-on life drawing workshop, working mainly in charcoal, and for the latter Brantwood has linked up with the nearby Swarthmoor Hall Quaker retreat, where one half day session will be held. This builds on the success of courses held for the first time last year – ranging from Expressive Drawing and Journal Making to Making and Using Natural Cords and Twines and Basket Making for Beginners – while Patrick Corbett’s popular art workshops are in their sixth year. These courses have attracted hugely enthusiastic feedback, such

COST-EFFECTIVE PARTS

as “Just delightful to be in such a beautiful place with such responsive people” and “I had a wonderful experience and I would recommend the course and venue to all”. Courses range from one to three days, and cost between £50 and £135, with materials and refreshments usually provided. One three-day Writers’ Retreat includes accommodation and costs £225, with a non-residential option available. For full details of the courses available visit www.brantwood.org.uk, or telephone 015394 41396. In the past, participants on Brantwood courses had to arrange their own B&B accommodation, but with bed and breakfast now available at The Lodge, costing £50 per person per room, or £35 per person for shared occupancy, you can now extend the Ruskin experience, enjoy the company of your new friends – and even bathe in Ruskin’s original bath! There is also a separate flat for two people, The Eyrie, in Brantwood House itself. As the home of a truly great Victorian writer, artist and social reformer, John Ruskin’s Brantwood is both a house of historical importance and a lively centre for contemporary arts and the environment – in one of the most beautiful settings of any stately home in the UK. Brantwood’s “Creating with inspiration” courses offer an unparalleled opportunity to get right to the heart of this unique place. How about a staycation? Well, if the recent lovely weather is anything to go by, then I’d definitely opt for another week’s holiday in the UK please! Wouldn’t that be great, to know we could pack the car until it’s almost at bursting point, and spend just a few hours on the UK’s roads to reach our destination knowing that all those essential items – folding chairs, windbreak, cool box, beach ball and flip flips could be used daily along our gorgeous stretches of coastline. You can tell I am back from a successful week of doing just that. I really am. Holiday Park, North Wales, fun packed, jam packed with over 70% sunshine and not a hint of rain. I had considered a holiday cottage as we have access to so many here at Travel Counsellors, but taking into consideration all of our requirements, it felt only right to choose somewhere with daytime and evening entertainment and a large indoor leisure complex included as part of the cost. We stayed at a Haven holiday site and there was lots of activity choices to dip in and out of, plus just a little further afield there is also so much of the natural outdoors to enjoy – and for free! The sunshine helped of course, but the beaches were huge, golden and unspoilt (I’ll admit, the windbreak made a huge difference on the blustery mornings). The opportunities for walking and visiting tourist attractions are endless and this was in low season. Top this off with all the mod cons of a modern caravan meant we could dine in as well as out, and

come and go as we pleased. For young families the holiday park should tick a lot of boxes. Perhaps something quieter and individual would suit those of you wanting to escape but either way if we get a late, good forecast, don’t overlook what’s on our doorstep. Ok, so a bit of Bank Holiday traffic is to be expected, but when you are full of the joys of a great British holiday, I’d say it’s definitely worth it. Best wishes,

YOU CAN’T SEE IT, TASTE IT OR SMELL IT BUT IT CAN KILL QUICKLY AND WITH NO WARNING.

Unsafe gas appliances produce a highly poisonous gas called carbon monoxide (CO). It can cause death as well as serious long term health problems such as brain damage. What is carbon monoxide? Carbon monoxide (CO) is a highly poisonous substance produced by the incomplete burning of gas and Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG). This happens when a gas appliance has been incorrectly fitted, badly repaired or poorly maintained. It can also occur if flues, chimneys or vents are blocked. Oil and solid fuels such as coal, wood, petrol and oil can also produce carbon monoxide. What is carbon monoxide poisoning? Carbon monoxide poisoning occurs when you breathe in even small amounts of the gas. When you breathe in carbon monoxide, it gets into your blood stream and prevents your red blood cells from carrying oxygen.

14

Without oxygen, your body tissue and cells die. Levels that do not kill can cause serious harm to health when breathed in over a long period of time. Long term effects of carbon monoxide poisoning include Paralysis and brain damage. Such long term effects occur because many people are unaware of unsafe gas appliances and subsequent gas leaks. Being aware of the symptoms could save your life. Carbon monoxide symptoms are similar to flu, food poisoning, viral infections and simply

@ThePinfoldLocal on twitter

tiredness. That’s why it’s quite common for people to mistake this very dangerous poisoning for something else. Other signs that could point to carbon monoxide poisoning: • Your symptoms only occur when you are at home • Your symptoms disappear or get better when you leave home and come back when return • Others in your household are experiencing symptoms (including your pets) and they appear at a similar time What should I do if I experience any symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning? • Get fresh air immediately. Open doors and windows, turn off gas appliances and leave the house • See your doctor immediately or go to hospital - let them know that you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning. They can do a blood or breath test to check • If you think there is immediate danger, call the Gas Emergency Helpline • Get a Gas Safe registered engineer to inspect your gas appliances and flues to see if there is a dangerous problem Don’t assume your gas appliances are safe: get a Gas Safe registered gas engineer to do a check. This is the only safe way to prevent yourself and those around you from incurring serious illness or death due to carbon monoxide exposure.

Why should I get a carbon monoxide alarm? Because carbon monoxide has no taste, smell or colour. Gas Safe Register strongly recommends you fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm in your home. While an alarm will alert you to carbon monoxide in your home, it is no substitute for having an annual gas safety check and regular servicing by a Gas Safe registered engineer. A carbon monoxide alarm looks similar to a smoke alarm and is very easy to fit by following the manufacturer’s instructions. You can purchase a carbon monoxide alarm from £15 at your local DIY store, supermarket or from your energy supplier. Before purchasing a carbon monoxide alarm, always make sure it is marked to EN 50291. It should also have the British Standards' Kitemark or another European approval organisation's mark on it. Follow the alarm manufacturer’s instructions on siting, testing and replacing the alarm. You are particularly at risk from carbon monoxide poisoning while sleeping, as you may not be aware of early carbon monoxide symptoms until it’s too late. Do not use the ‘black spot’ detectors that change colour when carbon monoxide is present. These will not make a sound to wake you up if the poisonous gas is present while you are sleeping. Permanent make up by Kay - Imagine the luxury of

always waking up to beautifully defined eyes, brows and lips. Whatever your lifestyle, permanent make up is the solution to looking and feeling great every day.

Myself

Since training in permanent make up I feel so passionate and absolutely love the job I do and I feel the industry's leading experts in permanent cosmetics (Nouveau Contour) have given me the highest standard of training possible to ensure I am up to the highest standard to provide the very best for each and every client.

What is permanent make up?

Permanent make up involves the application of pigment into the skin. Using specialist equipment and techniques to ensure the experience is quieter, gentler and less invasive. Although the treatments use needles, these do not penetrate as deep into the skin as tattooing and the needles are smaller.

How can permanent make up benefit me?

There are a variety of reasons why people get permanent make up. Many people want to save hassle of applying make up everyday. Others want to change or enhance their looks. Sports enthusiasts and those of us who have very active jobs will opt for permanent make up as they are often unable to wear conventional make-up, also, there are people who need feature correction, people with allergies to make up, those with vision impairment who have difficulty applying make up, all benefit from permanent makeup.

How long will it last?

This varies from person to person because skin type, diet, genetics and environmental factors can all contribute to how long the pigments will be retained.

As a guide, it could be anything between one to five years before a new treatment is required, although colour boosts are recommended for maintenance during this time. Once the colour starts to change you will know that you are ready for your colour boost. It is important to remember that permanent make up is a "low" not a "no" maintenance treatment.

Lasting Powers of Attorney for Health & Welfare

Hannah Elizabeth Bell LLB Director Photo: Powder & Paint Photography

Carrying on with last month’s theme, this article explores the benefits of creating a Lasting Power of Attorney for Health & Welfare.

Creating a Health & Welfare Power of Attorney enables you to plan in advance the decisions you would like to be made on your behalf if/when you lose the mental capacity to make decisions about your health & welfare yourself. Planning for a time when you cannot make decisions yourself is never easy- none of us like to think about a time when we may lose mental capacity- but it is also an empowering and responsible approach to take.

Effectively planning your future health & welfare needs means that you get to choose who makes those decisions for you, how you want them to make decisions and what decisions you want them to make. It also enables you to set guidance for your loved ones should you no longer be able to make decisions yourself.

A Health & Welfare Power of Attorney is a safe way to ensure your wishes are followed should you lose mental capacity -for whatever reasonbecause you are in control of who is appointed and their appointment has to be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (The Government appointed body for monitoring Lasting Powers of Attorney).

The decisions your Health & Welfare Attorneys are empowered to make will be governed by the information you provide in the Power of Attorney document and the provisions of the Mental Capacity Act. Your Attorneys cannot do whatever they like; they have to follow your guidance and the provisions of the Mental Capacity Act and at all times act in your best interests when making decisions on your behalf. The types of decisions your Health & Welfare

Attorneys will make for you will depend on your circumstances but they could include; giving or refusing consent to particular types of health care and medical treatment, where you live or day-to-day issues such as your diet, routine or who visits you.

Once your Health & Welfare Power of Attorney has been created and registered with the Office of the Public Guardian it might not be used straight away because your Attorneys can only make decisions about your Health & Welfare when you lose the mental capacity to make them.

Lakes Legal Limited are specialists in the provision of Lasting Powers of Attorney and are happy to answer any queries you may have. If you have any questions about Lasting Powers of Attorney please feel free to contact Hannah Bell using the below telephone number or by e-mail: Hannah@lakeslegallimited.co.uk. Lakes Legal Limited offers a comprehensive Lasting Power of Attorney service so you know exactly how much it is going to cost you from the very beginning. No hidden costs and No VAT!

National Wear a Ball Gown Day

"A ball gown is your dream......I think it is just as necessary in a woman's wardrobe as a suit......and it is wonderful for morale.....with a suit and a ball gown you can make a tour of the world and be well dressed for almost any occasion" Christian Dior Back in the summer of 2012, in honour of the Queens Jubilee, I decided to wear a ball gown to work for the day because that's what the Queen would do. I did everything as normal only in a ball gown....

I can’t tell you how lovely it was to wear a ball gown; not only to float around like a princess but also because people are so surprised that nearly everyone tells you how lovely you look which is just down right good for morale. I came to the conclusion that the nation is short of ball gown wearing occasions and unless you are a celebrity or royalty you just don’t get the opportunity to wear a gown. Thus, I felt the nation needed a national day to wear them. Last summer, a year on we hosted the first ever National Wear a Ball Gown Day at Two by Two, Ulverston and it was splendid. The event was in its infancy of course so there weren’t exactly ball gowns parading down the street but during the course of a regular Saturday we were treated to gowns twirling, tuxedos stalking, even tiaras shining. Times are hard however, and with the economic climate as it, splashing out on a gown for one day of the year might seem a bit rash, which is why Ulverston Scrap Store have come to the rescue and put together some ideas to help you make your ball gown on the cheap.

About me

By nature and from when I was knee high I loved to get places clean and tidy. My love for this grew until eventually admitting that I am thorough by nature, and love my own home to be kept to a high standard. I think it all stemmed from my upbringing and a mother who has a lovely clean and tidy home to this day.

Why?

I'm unusual in that rather than finding cleaning a slog I love the results that I get from cleaning! I consider myself thorough and aim to exceed my customers’ expectations. I choose to educate myself by questioning the best methods to tackle various different types of cleaning jobs. This I have done by both attending training courses and hands on in the job.Where necessary, I call upon various expertise in a chosen cleaning discipline to continually develop my understanding.

How?

Over the years my methods have changed.Thankfully experiences have been brilliant and aided in obtaining better and better results... Upgrading along the way to better commercial (adjustable power for domestic) carpet cleaning equipment has forced me to find new ways of operating with greater results. Experience has taught me to perform a PH test on the carpet; in case the previous clean did not have a rinse put through it. It's this know how attitude combined with ever increasing experience, that I bring to each and every job to ensure the best possible results.
