Winter Holidays Hello everyone, and so it seems it’s time to say ‘Hello Autumn’. The clocks have fallen back an hour and the night’s are drawing in, but hasn’t it got off to a beautiful start? I hope you too have been out and about enjoying our beautiful Cumbrian surroundings. Let’s make the most of it.

Well, another busy month has passed, infact my busiest to date, and I’ve seen a lot of people booking for Australia. A popular escape from our traditionally cold and dark winters, the start of 2013 will see many of my customers off down under to enjoy the warmth and everything Australasia has to offer. A variety of stopovers are being booked, Bangkok, Singapore and Hong Kong being the most popular but I’ve just arranged a train journey between Thailand and Malaysia too.

However, I think it’s fair to say that naturally, peoples first thoughts when they think of winter holidays, is snow. 2013 ski holidays have been ‘on sale’ for months and families and groups of friends were booking 12 months in advance to secure their favourite resorts, ensure their children were booked into ski school, and get their first choice secured, but I am anticipating a surge in enquiries soon once people see the snow has begun to steadily fall across Europe.

But, for something a little different, our special offers this week featured Winter in the desert - a 4 night break in Las Vegas, a 4 night break in Dubai and a reliable favourite, Canary Island sunshine.

Winter holidays really can come in all shapes and sizes. Hope you all enjoy the celebrations for Halloween and bonfire night, and next month I will be telling you all about safaris… until then, Happy Holidays,

Sharon Matthews for all your travel needs

Lakes Legal Limited

Deputyship Orders n September’s issue we examined the Lasting Power of Attorney. That Article has had great feedback but following publication I have been asked one question more than any other; What happens if you don’t have a Lasting Power of Attorney?

If you or a relative loose the mental capacity to make decisions for yourself and you do not have a Power of Attorney appointing someone to make those decisions for you life can be very difficult for those left to deal with the situation.

Once a person looses the capacity to make decisions for themselves, if they have not appointed an Attorney, it is up to the Court to make decisions for them. This means that if a suitable applicant wishes to have the legal authority to make decisions on behalf of the person who has lost mental capacity they must make an application to the Court.

The applicant has to apply for what is called a Deputyship Order. This is an Order that the court can make to appoint a Deputy for the person who has lost mental capacity. Like the Attorney the Deputy can be appointed to deal with either Health and Welfare decisions or Property and Financial Affairs decisions or both.

The application process for a Deputyship Order is necessarily complex and long winded taking on average three months to process. The complexities also make obtaining the Deputyship Order very expensive, compared to the Lasting Power of Attorney process. Any person can prepare their application to become a

Deputy themselves by downloading the documents from the following website: www.direct.gov.uk

Lakes Legal Limited offers a comprehensive package to help all prospective Deputies through this application process. All Lakes Legal Limited services are conducted for an agreed fixed price- so you know exactly how much it is going to cost you from the out set. ULVERSTON BUSINESS CENTRE 25 NEW MARKET STREET The Ulverston Business Centre, situated down one side of New Market Street above the shops between the Market Hall and the Post Office, is probably one of the town’s secret business gems, as from the street, it is only an entrance doorway, but inside and upstairs, it is a vast complex of various affordable office suites and meeting rooms. UBC is owned by John Muldoon and Steve Johnstone and managed by Archie Workman, the latter is a well known local business mentor and currently chairman of the Ulverston Business Alliance www.ulverstonbusinessalliance.ning.com “We have a range of affordable offices at the moment that start at around £50.00 per week + VAT, however, due to the current economic climate and repeated requests for incubator space in Ulverston, we have created a series of “Buddy Offices”TM which will halve this cost for two companies sharing the same room” says Archie.

A small cover charge (inc VAT) for this includes tea & coffee, ‘doughnuts’ and the room hire. Meeting rooms can be hired by the hour, half day and full day at competitive rates.

There are not many places in towns where you can walk in off the high street and have a confidential meeting, have a cosy office, be supported by a business mentor and network with like minded businesses. UBC will be hosting a series of training workshops in 2013, which will be relevant to small businesses.

Contact; Archie on 07554 117 925 for details. archie@ulverstonbusinesscentre.co.uk www.ulverstonbusinesscentre.co.uk Twitter@UlvBizCentre www.facebook.com/UlverstonBusinessCentre

Ulverston Business Centre is owned by Ulverston Properties Limited, Company Registration No. 6444618

In the Business Hub, which has free Wi-Fi, we have the flexibility to use one of our meeting rooms as a business incubator space with “hot desks” for budding young entrepreneurs or olderpreneurs to work from to develop their business.

Archie also manages the website “Cumbria Jelly”TM www.cumbriajelly.ning.com for homeworkers in Cumbria to network together and is hosting “Ulverston Jelly” on the 1st Friday morning of each month, when homeworkers can meet up for the morning and work together in the Business Hub with their lap-tops.

FILM PRODUCTION / BROADCAST / DIGITAL CREATIVE SERVICES

L

akes Creative is a video production and digital services company based in Ulverston, specialising in video marketing content for the web. It can boast of a client list that includes the Lake District National Park Authority, Lakeland Kitchenware, BAE Systems, the Connexions Group in Carlisle, Lakeland Radio and the Beech Hill Hotel in Windermere.

“The common misconception about video production is that it is beyond most people’s budget” says Managing Director, John McKeown. “In fact when clients see the results they realise how cost effective it is.”

Barrovian John, started as a cameraman at Tyne Tees Television in Newcastle in 1995, working with the likes of Ant and Dec at the start of their career and working on a range of studio shows, outside broadcasts,

documentaries and news, before going on to work on TV coverage of the Premier League, Champions League and World Cup Finals.

Seven years ago, John returned to the area from Newcastle with his family and decided to extend his skills into all areas of video production. Soon after, he was gaining work with BAE Systems in Barrow and has continued to extend his list of clients ever since.

“Video communicates faster and more effectively than any other medium and can literally bring your business to life. It is 'the' social media and once you add it to YouTube, it is easily shared on your social networking sites such as Facebook,Twitter, Pinterest etc.” “If you take into account that YouTube is now the second largest search engine after Google

(who owns it) then you should seriously be considering including your business on it, whether you're a bed and breakfast in the Lakes or a large company in the services sector.”

John with Cumbrian celebrity chef Peter Sidwell, producing short recipe videos for Lakeland Kitchenware.

“A video we produced for The Beech Hill Hotel, Windermere on their luxury holiday home was viewed 1,300 times within two weeks on YouTube and Facebook leading directly to bookings thanks to a well orchestrated Social Networking campaign.”

WINTER WARMERS AND LITTLE BLACK DRESSES!

Good morning, Well it's cold here in the lakes and I'm thinking about all those lovely winter stews and wholesome casseroles topped with dumplings, mmm. How many of you think that if you are on a diet they are a no-no? You could be wrong, they are an amazing way to warm up and fill up on all of those vitamin rich vegetables and protein and fibre rich beans and lentils, add to that a large helping of amazing tomatoes and rosemary and you have a recipe for success. Pop them in a slow cooker and you have fast easy meals just waiting for you to come in the door from work.

If you had been following my 12 week course or living life in balance your little black dress wouldn't be a problem.A recent study found that 1/4 of all women who buy a "christmas party dress" buy it a size smaller in the hope that they will lose a few pounds to wear it, the reality is that with all the extra eating and drinking they often don't get to wear it at all and tend to put on not lose weight in the run up to Christmas.

are a result of long term good habits. So what are the secrets to Good Health? Next month we’ll look at super foods for great health to add to your diet.

There are three pillars to good health and Wellness…

1. Plenty of Water –between 1.5 and 2.5 litres per day

2. Regular Exercise – 30 to 45 minutes 5 times per week

3. A Balanced Diet – containing the right levels of nutrients, vitamins and minerals and a balance of carbohydrates, proteins and fibres. Oh dear which one to choose, they all fit!!!!!

Long term health and weight control are not achieved over night or even in 12 weeks, they My clients have strategies to cope with this and a couple of secret weapons to lose weight and limit the damage over the festivities.

1. The formula 1 shakes and F2 vitamins to keep up their energy levels and cut right back on calories (approx 210 cals per meal) and on those party days remember to have an extra shake before leaving so you don't attack the buffet with gay abandon with an appetite of someone who hasn't eaten for a week!

2. The cheaters delight or fat buster!! - Fibre bond it does exactly what it says it bonds fat to the fibre and allows it to pass through your system without being absorbed, no unpleasant side effects, just removes some of the unwanted fat and can be used as and when you need it. 3. Don't forget to drink water or your thermo herbal beverage to keep you feeling great, full of energy!

FU N fill not Landfill!

USS Ulverston Scrap Store

What a great use of waste! That’s what Corrin Hanlin thought when she first came across a Scrap Store. There are now over 100 in the UK, they’re becoming really popular. She was so impressed that she decided to set one up in Ulverston. In 2010 USS (Ulverston Scrap Store) was founded as a small charity. What’s a scrap store you may ask? An Aladdin’s cave of things that businesses and people throw out or no longer need. So it could be things like paper, cardboard, fabrics, wool, manufacturing or retail offcuts, samples, damaged goods or end of lines. It could be office supplies, wallpaper and fabric sample books, brightly coloured cellophane the list is endless. To help people know what USS can use there is a downloadable list on the website, but if what you have is not on there, please contact

16

us and we’ll let you know if we can use it.You’d be amazed at what a bit of imagination can do to transform waste things into something wonderful.

For businesses it’s great to be able to donate clean, safe waste materials as helps with cutting down the waste that goes to landfill, as well as benefiting the local community. For individuals who donate, you know that by donating items you no longer want, one of USS’s members will be delighted to use them.

So who uses a scrap store? These are some of the types of groups that could use USS, I’m sure there are many more. Adventure playgrounds, After school clubs, Art groups, Art therapists, Breakfast clubs, Brownies/Guides, Care homes, Children’s Centres, City farms, Community artists, Community centres, Community groups, Child minders, Crèches, Church groups, Day care centres, Day nurseries, Dance groups, Drama groups, FE College

courses, Festival workshops, Gardening clubs, Home educators, Lunchtime clubs, Music groups, Nannies, Out of school clubs, Parent/carer & toddler groups, Pre-schools, Playgroups, Play schemes, RACs, Schools, Scouts/Cubs, Uniformed groups, Woodcraft folk, Workshop providers, Youth Clubs, individuals and families. So quite a lot of potential users! Anyone can become a member and access cheap and interesting materials.

We also run workshops, under the name Scraptastics! USS employs workshop leaders to create really fun sessions for families using the scrap materials from USS.

Our next workshop will be at the Dickensian Festival on Saturday 24th November. This will be run as a drop in adult and children’s workshop, between 12-3pm. After that we have a Christmas Magic themed one on Saturday 8th December running between 2.30 to 4pm and a cheer up January one on Saturday 27th January 2013 on between 10.30 to 12.00.

Further details and booking information are on www.scraptastics.co.uk and on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/UlverstonScrapStore.

We’re located at The Old Library, 17-19 Cavendish Street, Ulverston LA12 7AD. Contact USS for more information www.ulverstonscrapstore.co.uk or call Corrin on 07770 722254

A WEEK IN THE LIFE OF A PASHMINA

“Scarves can give the final touch to your frock…..and a scarf is to a woman what a neck tie is to a man, and the way you tie it is part of your personality.”

C

hristian Dior was right, everyone loves a scarf! Not only do they keep you warm but they can transform your outfit in an instant. Scarves are loved by women of all ages and make the most wonderful fashion accessory. There are countless ways to tie your scarf, stole or pashmina, depending on what you are wearing, where you are going and what way out you feel. All scarves are a wonder but pashminas are special. If you’ve never tried a pashmina, you will likely wonder how a colourful piece of fringed fabric can be considered such a phenomenon and often costs more than a coat. However, the passion for pashmina is well worth consideration and there are good reasons why the celebrity of scarves often comes with its show off price tag. Pashmina wool is found on the underbelly of the Capra Hircus mountain goat which survives extreme weather conditions 1200ft high in the Himalayas. This short undercoat of hair is six times finer than human hair and keeps the goat warm in the coldest of conditions. Pashmina is possibly the softest and finest wool in the world and can only be spun by hand. Once woven with silk it gains strength and durability and has often been described as the fibre of Kings. The art and science of making pashminas is thought to be as old as 3000 years BC.The skill was perfected by the Nepalese and for the longest time, production was protected and remained solely in Kashmir, the region of origin. Despite today’s worldwide demand for pashmina fabric, most pashminas are still hand woven in Nepal. @ThePinfoldLocal on twitter

Once you put a pashmina on you really won’t want to take it off. It is soft and warm, elegant and bright, not only that it has charisma. Pashminas have been worn for centuries by Kings and Queens and Nobles for good reason since no matter how you tie it or wear it, it will stand proud on your head and neck and shoulders. You can drape it, wrap it or tie it then you can stuff it into a tiny space in your handbag and when you bring it back out it will still be fabulous.

Pashmina scarves are available at every price point depending on their pashmina content and what they are mixed with. Those blended with viscose or manmade fibres are less expensive than those mixed with silk and those that are pure pashmina. They are all brilliant, however, if you are looking for the real thing you can feel assured you’ve found one if you can pull the entire thing through a man’s sized wedding ring. The real thing is at Two by Two Ulverston. Our pashminas are produced by Cocowai, a cashmere company based in Devon which works truly ethically with their partners in Nepal. Our pashminas are hand woven, in 70% cashmere and 30% silk in our specified size which works perfectly as both a scarf and a shawl. We have about 30 different gorgeous colours to choose from which can present a bit of a problem when it comes to making a choice. They do cost £65 but you will adore it and you will be as warm as a Himalayan goat. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
