Meanwhile, there are plenty of Winter escapes on people’s minds too.
We can no longer hide from this..….it’s less than 100 days to Christmas and the bookings are beginning for European Christmas markets. For us, there are great local airport departures so the taste of gluhwein and bratwurst, and shopping for traditional local gifts is only a matter of hours away, with Germany and Prague being popular destinations this year. And for those wanting to travel further afield, New York continues to be popular for a short break in December.
In these difficult financial times, it’s never been more important to protect your money when booking your holiday, particularly if you are buying separate travel components e.g. Low cost flights and / or accommodation and car hire. In April this year the government introduced ‘Flight Plus’, an enhanced financial protection scheme for customers, and Travel Counsellors were the first body in the UK to become accredited by the Civil Aviation Authority. This comes into full effect on 1st October 2012 – please ensure when booking these elements that you check that you are covered under Flight Plus.
Finally, to those of you who called in response to last month’s advert, thank you, it is lovely to be speaking to new customers about their holiday plans. Until next month…when I’ll be focusing on Winter breaks, I leave you with thoughts of Happy Holidays, Best wishes,
Sharon

Registering Your Home
Hannah Elizabeth Bell LLB Director Photo: Powder & Paint Photography
Most of us have heard of the Land Registry, but what is it and what does it do? In 1925 the G o v e r n m e n t introduced a compulsory property registration regime that is still in operation, albeit in a much larger scale, today.
The program was rolled out slowly focusing on London and the home-counties to begin with and gradually reaching north until Land Registration became compulsory throughout England and Wales. It is now Compulsory to register any unregistered land or property in England or Wales with the Land Registry when it is transferred to another party, when certain new leases are granted and/or when it is mortgaged.
If your land or property is not registered the title to it will be contained in the old type property deeds that you will have been given when you bought or inherited it. If your property is not registered the boundaries to your property will be contained in the title deeds. Old plans can often be unreliable and may give rise to conflict between neighbouring properties. Properties registered with the Land Registry have their boundaries delineated with reference to the O.S. map which provides greater certainty about the extent of the property.
If your property is not registered you can apply to voluntarily register your property with the Land Registry. To encourage voluntary registration the Land Registry are currently offering a 25% discount on their registration fees.
The Land Registry are very helpful and will be happy to guide you through the registration process. All of the application forms are available online here: http://www.landregistry.gov.uk
Alternatively if you would like some assistance with the completion of your application forms Having your property registered with the Land Lakes Legal Limited offer this service for a fixed Registry is much safer than the old title deeds fee of £200.00. system. Possession ie ownership by occupation. Property registered at the Land Registry is also less likely to be the subject to fraud. Un-registered land and property can be subject to fraudulent mortgage charges and transfers. Land Registration did not become compulsory in Cumbria until the late 1980’s meaning that land or property in Cumbria which has not changed hands since before 1989 may still be unregistered.

What’s in a healthy breakfast? Well I’m glad you asked
After a long nights fast when the body has been busy repairing, replenishing and resting and there is nothing left in the system it needs hydration, a good supply of healthy proteins as building blocks, some complex carbohydrates to fuel the days activities ahead and lots of vitamins, minerals and nutrients to start the day well. What it often gets is some simple and sugary carbohydrates in the form of breakfast cereals, toast and jam or nothing at all! The graphs below show what this can do to your blood sugars and if you don’t get it right, you will drive hunger and cravings all day.
Missing or having a poor quality breakfast is responsible for many people’s tendency to gain weight and lack energy. Here at Herbalife we think everyone should have a healthy breakfast to start their day and if you saw last months article you’ll know just what we manage to pack into our morning smoothies for you. As a wellness coach I like to be balanced, I am a busy mum and run a farm with my husband so time is often short and being healthy and full of energy is very important to me. I tend to have a Herbalife smoothie for breakfast 5-6 days a week and at the weekend I have a treat and make a cooked breakfast with eggs tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach and usually a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice and green tea. By doing this I can pretty much guarantee my energy levels will be good throughout the day every day. Why not join me in a healthy breakfast/wellness program and get a complimentary wellness consultation for you and friend to kick start your energy and wellbeing. Herbalife is fast, easy, convenient and safe, giving you all the nutrition you need to achieve all of your goals, used by Olympic athletes, weekend warriors and busy people who just want more from life, a perfect nutrition solution to help you. From kitchen tables to The aim of The Wedding Room is summed up in their mission statement; Using our pioneering spirit we promise a compelling place to visit and shop. Providing quality products at affordable prices, without any compromise, we will deliver the highest professional service suiting each customers individual needs.
2011 was the year for two life changing weddings, daughters of the owners of The Wedding Room Charlotte Tongue and Kelly Woodhouse Both of the owners of The Wedding Room were looking for wedding services to complete their daughter wedding. One needed a floral artist and the other venue dresser. After meeting each other Ellie & Karen became friends and found how both of them shared the same passion, creative talent and ethics that has proven to be a winning success.
To test the market Karen & Ellie rented a room with in Elegance hair salon on Scott Street in Barrow. After six weeks they had out grown the space so The Wedding Room moved to Rawlinson Street. Almost a year on from their first meeting they have now relocated to bigger premisses on Rawlinson street.
Last August they both sat talking around Karen's kitchen table about how expensive weddings and celebrations can be and how with each others help they had saved a small fortune with out compromising on style and quality. You could say this was a 'light bulb' moment as this is when the idea to work together as The Wedding Room began.

Karen and Ellie are now planing for next year with more innovative designs and ideas. With the move to the new show room they are working on a gift section and rental service aimed at the corporate market. www.thepinfold.com

Furness Abbey : fact and fiction
The hidden gem of the F u r n e s s peninsula is the Cistercian abbey, nestled in the romantically named Vale of Deadly Nightshade, a tumbling, ruin of radiant red sandstone. It is the setting for a series of fantasy novels for age 9 and above-with a strong adult following, by local Cumbrian author Gill Jepson. The “Out of Time” series begins with “The Secret of the Swan”, an intriguing adventure set around Furness Abbey and other key ancient monuments in the area. Rebecca and the other characters find themselves embroiled in a quest to discover a hidden abbey treasure, with the help of a delivery boy from 1934 and a scribe from the monastery, John Stell. They are beset by all kinds of dangers and evil doers, but eventually triumph...making an amazing discovery at the same time.
The second book is released on 1 November and rather than a sequel, is a parallel story, based around the same point in time. The story slips deftly in and out of different time frames, thrusting Nate, a young archaeologist into terrifying adventures with smugglers, Vikings and treasure hunters. He becomes entangled in a race to find a sacred sword. These adventures take the characters on a roller coaster ride through time
as they pit themselves against their enemies, both in the distant past and the present.
Gill will be reading from the new book and signing copies at Halloween at Abbey House Hotel on 28th October and Abbey Mill Cafe on 31st October. Further launches will be announced later. Gill also provides Author days for schools and will be touring the Cumbria area again this year. Interested groups or schools can contact her via her website www.gilljepson.co.uk. A young children’s book, Guy the Grumpy Gargoyle is also available and is set in the abbey too. Books are available from Waterstone’s bookshop.
Her love of Furness Abbey and the success of the first book in engaging children with the incredible ruins have prompted her to form a new community group-Furness Abbey Fellowship. With the advent of the serious structural and conservation work currently affecting the abbey and the fantastic discovery of an abbot’s skeleton, ring and crosier, the group aims to support English Heritage in developing and enhancing the visitor experience. They are launching a major fund raising programme which will include activities in the abbey and the surrounding area. If you would like to join please contact Gill on furnessabbeyfellowship@gmail.com or by phone - 07527 996 432.

Barrow-based TI Payroll & Accounting Scoops Financial Services Award to take businesses where they want to be.
Tracy said: “The EVA’s 2012 was such a good night and it was lovely to be part of it. I am so proud to have won the EVA’s for the second year in a row, I never thought it would be possible. I am so grateful to all those that voted, I’ve realised that we must be doing something right, I’ve just got to work out what it is now so I can bottle it!”
TI Payroll & Accounting has scooped the financial services award at the coveted 2012 Enterprise Vision Awards (the EVA’s), which celebrate the achievements of women in business across the North West and which are run by Pink Link Ladies founders, Coral Horn and Rae Stephenson. This is the second time in as many years that the company has won the award beating off stiff competition from financial services providers from across the North West.
The business is owned by Tracy Irwin, whose business began at the age of 26 whilst working for a large engineering company as office manager, Tracy’s friends and referrals were asking for help and advice, which led to her creating her business on a small scale basis.
2007 saw the official launch of TI Payroll & Accounting into the South Lakes and Furness area and since then has grown from strength to strength, now employing a team of three. The company believes cashflow can make or break any business, they add value to any small business by showing ways to save money and manage cashflow more efficiently. On top of their cost effective packages they also offer and a full business planning service that will helps set goals and put all the right processes in place
16
Co-founder of the EVA’s, Coral Horn said:“We have been absolutely thrilled with the response from businesses this year and were delighted to receive over 14,000 votes in support of our finalists. The standard of this year’s entries has been incredibly high and we would like to say a huge congratulations to Tracy.”
TI Payroll & Accounting faced stiff competition from businesses across the region in an awards which attracted hundreds of entries despite only being in its second year. This year’s winners were announced at a glamorous black tie event held at Ribby Hall Village and was attended by over 360 guests and leading business players from the region. The event was supported by headline sponsors, Kitchener 2000 and on the night local operatic duo, Solo Voci wowed guests with stunning renditions of classical favourites and the evening was hosted

In addition to TI Payrolls success at the EVA Awards three other South Lakes Business women made through to the finals of the EVA Awards 2012.
Hannah Bell of Lakes Legal Limited was a finalist in the Professional Service Business of the Year category, Helyn Conner of Astro Innovation was a finalist in the Inspirational Woman of the Year Award and Julie Thompson of Happy Houndz was a finalist in the Networker of the Year group.
All of the finalists made it through tough competition to make it to the finals. Having been selected from over 200 entrants in each category the ladies had to present their business to a panel of judges and attend interviews in Blackpool.
All of the South Lakes Finalists were honoured to have been nominated and grateful to make it to the finals. Not collecting the accolade did not dampen their spirits as reaching the finals and watching Tracy collect her award was reward enough to celebrate for one evening!

A COLLECTION OF CRAFTS HANNAH WILLET TS A Collection of Crafts is a compilation of everything that I work on creatively. It ranges from cards, j e w e l l e r y, sketches, canvases and even painted plant pots.
I'd always wanted to make jewellery and began creating pieces with buttons, as they provide colourful designs and a chance to be
creative but with little cost. Just about everyone has a button tin and I've had many lovely people donate me theirs. One ladies
18
70+ year collection consisted of some vintage button cards which have been the inspiration for 'The Happy Hoarder' labels. After playing around with various button designs, I started looking for other materials to use whilst keeping with the recycling / collecting concept. Being the hoarder that I am, I keep all of my paper cuttings from making cards and so began to experiment with layering up paper shapes. Over the past two years I developed this technique and the colours, shapes, designs are endless! With British, tea party, vintage items very popular at the moment, my bunting necklaces have been a real success, especially my union jack design over the Olympic / Paralympics period. Each piece of jewellery is beautifully lightweight and unique. Most of the necklaces I create are also reversible, so the customer is getting two for the price of one! There is so much choice for jewellery out there that my intention has always been to create items that are unusual and perhaps never been made before.
@ThePinfoldLocal on twitter
My range of cards include a collection of cat drawings. I have two cats and they are great muses for my designs. I try to capture them in their natural poses, which other catlovers can relate to. Each drawing is printed onto a collage of handmade tissue which I prepare myself. This adds a depth and texture to the images which are also available in a larger mounted print.
Other cards in the collection promote my local sketches. I moved back to Barrow two years ago, after studying Illustration at Coventry University, and I think that time away makes you realise how unique the area is.We have both the sea and the Lake District so there's plenty of inspiration to be found. I'm passionate about the beautiful area we live in and enjoy drawing places that I have a personal connection to. My sketches are sold as mounted or framed prints at The Gallery, Cavendish street, Barrow where I work. Most of my other creations including jewellery and cards can be found online.
Social networking sites are a great way to get your work out there to a larger audience and keep them updated on new items or commissions. I also have online shops that can be found on ASOS and Etsy. ASOS is great because it's such a huge fashion website and Etsy is growing bigger by the day with its emphasis on handmade and original crafts. I also take part in local craft fairs when I can and I am always looking for new outlets to promote and sell my work.
As well as the items I make, I also work on commissions. Most recently I have worked on designs for wedding invites, a family tree, canvases and custom jewellery. I like to try my hand at anything and everything - it's an interesting challenge to try something new. shops: www.etsy.com/shop/HannahWilletts https://marketplace.asos.com/seller/hannahwil letts/collection www.facebook.com/HannahWillettsACollecti onOfCrafts contact: hannahwilletts@hotmail.co.uk

Following in the footsteps of Mary Quant, borrowing from the boys is one of the biggest fashion stories for autumn 2012. We can give a Royal Wave to the ladylike, Jubilee inspired, summer pastels and enjoy an abundance of oversized 2 slouchy knitwear, boyish shirts, dandy prints and sharp tailoring. Dressing in boy’s clothes seems a little eccentric and rebellious, and, therefore, a very British thing to do; but in fact, androgynous fashion began in France, for very 3 practical reasons.

Chanel admired the simplicity and functionality of men’s clothes and often customised, and wore garments from the wardrobes of her lovers. This fed into her designs which were chic and elegant, but above all sensible; a travel coat that had big pockets, a hat that would fold up into a suitcase, trousers for women and 4 black clothes. Chanel was the first to design women’s clothes in jersey so they could run and dance and ride bicycles like men. Chanel loved men’s clothes and felt making them unisex was her gift to women. 5
