HOW LOSS HELPED ME REEVALUATE MY LEGACY

I lost two friends recently, and while we all know death is inevitable, it doesn’t lessen the pain of loss. Many of us throw around the cliches “life is too short” or “tomorrow isn’t promised” without truly acknowledging the heaviness those statements carry.

We don’t give it deeper thought until death snatches people close to us

My friends’ deaths jerked me out of my comfort zone and shook me from a slumber I didn’t even know I was in, much like when you’re sleep walking I realized I’d been trudging through life, putting things off until tomorrow, the next month, or the month after I had been stressing over the wrong situations while things that deserved my attention were falling by the wayside.

We all do it. We have this false sense of security that there is a tomorrow for us However, the reality that today might be all I have led me to think about my legacy What do I want to leave behind?

When people discuss legacy, they talk about money, property, land, and investments which is awesome, but there is more to it

What about the intangibles? I am all for generational wealth, but I also want to leave behind the type of love my greatgreat-great-grandchildren will feel. I want to leave behind land, but I also want to leave behind the blueprints for building strong, healthy relationships, overcoming trauma, and healing

My goal is not to just build generational wealth and break generational cycles but to also instill the lessons and provide the tools to maintain them, so it outlives me I decided to be intentional about planting seeds that will be watered and nurtured by future generations They will reap what I am sowing, so I better make sure that I am cognizant of what I am planting and the soil I am planting it in

Though they didn’t know each other, both of my friends loved hard, poured into other people, and their smiles lit up a room. I can honestly say they left the world a much better place than how they found it When I think of them, I don’t wonder how much money they left their kids; I think of how blessed their friends and family are to have been loved by them I think of all the lives they touched while they were here and the lasting impact, they had on people they’d never even met They left footprints that I’d be proud to follow, which is the legacy I want to leave behind

HELPING STUDENTS DREAM BIG IN

2023

School guidance counselors are amazing in-school support for a student’s social, emotional, and academic functioning From offering individual support, classroom groups, and possibly even additional social skill group settings, their jobs are no easy task February is known as the month of love, but this year love should spread to our school counselors in honor of National School Counseling Week from February 6-10, 2023. This year ’ s theme is “Helping Students Dream Big ”

National School Counseling Week aims to highlight the great impact these professionals have in supporting student success and career planning From the outside looking in, school counselors may appear to have a simple job description. However, when you factor in barriers such as school administration, environmental factors, lack of resources, and the global pandemic, the odds seem to not be in their favor

COVID-19, in particular, presented significant barriers that all school personnel were forced to adapt to Since the pandemic, schools have been battling against teacher burnout, staff shortages, and other challenges that are still crippling in 2023 Many school counselors have had to shift to spend more time supporting other school needs besides their counseling duties According to Teach For America, A 2020 survey of 7,000 school counselors found that many had been required to serve as substitute teachers, perform temperature checks, and take on other tasks due to the COVID-19 crisis

Additional counseling tasks have included but are not limited to contact tracing, administrative work, lunch duty, coordinating student tests, and more In addition, youth mental health needs and teen suicides are on the rise! So what can parents and community members do to support our school counselors? Social and emotional learning is a step, and it starts at home Here are a few ways in which parents can support social and emotional learning with their child at home:

Be a good listener

Model the behavior you seek

Nurture your child’s self-esteem

Respect differences

Take advantage of support service

It’s also possible for parents and community members to support SEL needs at the school level Here are some simple tips to help guide you:

Investigate your school’s current SEL efforts

Organize guest speakers

Get involved

Celebrate diversity

Begin the discussion

The next time you are at your child’s school, ask your school counselor how you can support them It takes a village Thank you to school counselors around the globe

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS

10 WAYS TO SHOW KINDNESS

Do you know what makes a person’s day 10 times better? Showing them random acts of kindness. Mother Teresa once said, “We cannot do great things on this earth, only small things with great love.”

When we practice random acts of kindness:

It releases positivity We feel better, and the recipients of our acts feel better, making them more likely to be kind to others

It can release neurochemicals that result in the sense of well-being, the “helper’s high,” as Allan Luks and Peggy Payne describe the healing power of doing good. In fact, the neural circuits involved in chemical “highs” are the same ones activated by kindness and compassion.

It can reduce pain. Dopamine, serotonin, and endogenous opioids are released by kind behavior.

PAGE FOUR| JOURNEY

It enhances the release of oxytocin in interactions where two or more people are engaged in kind behavior. In turn, bonds between those who are kind to one another are strengthened.

It enhances both physical and mental health. Many physical ailments are either precipitated by or aggravated by stress. Kindness reduces stress (Ma, 2017).

Now let’s dive into 10 great, random acts of kindness;

Donating blood/plasm

Paying it forward

Donating to charity

Write a thank you note to someone who has inspired you to make a positive difference.

Donate household items to your local refugee support organization. Pick up one piece of litter and throw it away. Create care packages for your houseless neighbors.

Let someone go first in line.

Call a local homeless shelter to ask how you can best support them in the next month.

Pay off a student’s lunch debt via GoFundMe or by calling a local school.

There are so many other random acts of kindness that individuals can participate in! These are only merely a few of the ones that could potentially make a huge impact on those in need We all know that the world could improve if we were kind to one another

I was always taught that it takes extra strength to be mean or hateful; being kind and gentle comes naturally. So why not practice those natural qualities and traits that have been given to us. Let’s treat each other as we would want to be treated. Let’s live as Jesus once lived. Life is about more than getting something out of it for yourself; it is about giving back and being selfless. Honestly and truly, that is what being kind is all about.

Blessed Hands for Beauty

1 Outside of Entrepreneurship, who is Antuonette Patterson in five words?

A: Honestly, I’m still figuring it out So much of my life has been serving others, whether it be a job, or the typical roles in my life of wife, mother, sister, friend, daughter, etc , that I will be intentional about truly finding myself in the next few years

2 When did you realize you had a passion for hair? How did your incredible gift for wig-making come about?

A: I’ve had a passion for hair since I was a little girl, starting with dolls and experimenting with my and my sister’s hair There are so many women in my family; it was always easy to find a test subject

3 At this point in your career, you have designed and executed thousands of wigs What goes into a look from start to finish?

A: I love to start by visualizing the finished look I hand sew the lace down on the cap according to the end result, whether in the middle for a middle part or to the side Then I create my guidelines and finish the stitching on my Singer sewing machine Once I’ve finished sewing, I start customizing, cleansing, and molding the wig to set the direction of the hair for air drying Once the wig is completely dry, I can style and stage for photos/videos. The mannequin heads I have just bring the entire look to life.

4. What inspired the name “Blessed Hands for Beauty”?

A: growing up, when I would do different braid styles and switch up my hair, do my own lashes, and play in makeup so frequently, people would always tell me I had “blessed hands,” so when I decided to pursue my passion as a business I realized it wasn’t just hair that I was good at. It was also the concept of making things more beautiful That’s when I said it out loud to my husband, who confirmed that I had “blessed hands for many things beauty,” so I shortened it and came up with “Blessed Hands for Beauty ”

5 You have over a decade under your belt in the cosmetology industry Can women still book you for hair services outside of wig creation?

A: So much has changed in this industry I’m not currently offering those services, but who knows what the future holds

Lace closures are my jam!
Frontals can give more versatility, but a closure just makes life a bit easier.

6 What can women expect when sitting in Antuonette’s chair?

A: My goal has always been to make women feel more beautiful, so they can expect that I will turn that chair around and show them a new side of themselves they may not have noticed before

7 When you reflect on your years in the industry, who or what would you tribute your success to?

A: I would attribute my success to my amazing husband He works so hard to provide the space for me to operate in my passion, and I’m grateful for it

8 How do you balance being a wife, mother, and entrepreneur? What does a day in your life look like?

A: There is no balance Being a solo entrepreneur takes so much time away from family I missed many moments as a wife and a mother while nurturing and scaling my business

9 What is next for Blessed Hands for Beauty? Where do you see your company in the next 3-5 years?

A: In the next 3-5 years, I’d love to work on a tv or movie set styling and applying glueless wigs It would be an amazing experience to step out of my comfort zone and travel, making more women feel beautiful in person through glueless wigs

10. What advice do you have for upcoming entrepreneurs, specifically in the hair industry?

A: My advice to upcoming entrepreneurs in this industry would be to get a business bank account. Start tracking your income and expenses so that you ’ re aware of what’s coming in and going out. Dedicate at least 1-2 hours daily to care for YOU! Being a true business owner will take a lot from you, so you HAVE to MAKE the time to pour into yourself so you aren’t running on fumes all the time Everything is content, so record yourself and take pictures of your process There’s nothing like flipping through your photos and videos and realizing you have documented the steps of your process for future courses or just to review when you get stuck in a stage Lastly, encourage yourself Even when there are days with no sales, always remember your “WHY” because it’ll get you through the good days AND the not-so-good days

11 What words of encouragement do you take with you daily as you strive for more success in your company?

A: A new phrase I came across said, “ success is obedience ” All the money, material things, or praise from others won’t sustain you or your spirit Obedience in fulfilling your purpose will bring you all the joy you desire I vow to always remind myself of this because I will find the peace to persevere in my obedience, and there’s nothing like success with peace!

12 What is your definition of a Pretty Woman Who Hustles?

A: A pretty woman that hustles, in my opinion, can be a hard-working, focused, and determined woman who spreads positive energy to those she encounters, which awakens the beauty in them and causes them to spread that same beautiful positive energy to another person It’s important to have integrity and a good work ethic, but there’s just something so magical about a woman who can work just as hard spreading love and positivity as they do to bring success in their businesses

Bonus Questions:

- Lace Wigs or Frontals?

* Lace closures are my jam! Frontals can give more versatility, but a closure just makes life a bit easier

- Long Hair or Bob Style?

* I’m a bob girl! Layers, especially, are my absolute favorite! It’s something about volume curls and an angled cut that just brings out the diva in me!

- Color or Natural Black?

* I love to play around with colors. I call them my “beautiful mistakes.” It takes the pressure off perfection and opens the creative doors for wonder and magic to shine bright!

The top 6 songs (on repeat) that get me going on a busy day are:

1 Lucky Daye “Over”

2 Libianca “People”

3 Billie Eilish “Happier Than ever ”

4 Olivia Rodrigo “Favorite Crime”

5 Anne Marie “2002”

6 Joji/Benee “Afterthought”

What is your definition of a Pretty Woman Who Hustles?

A pretty woman who hustles is a woman who gets it out of the mud! A queen that knows her worth and adds tax to it unapologetically

ENTREPRENEUR SPOTLIGHT

Shante Gordon

Say hello to your new marketing bestie, Shante Slay! Shante Slay is a 28-year-old marketing executive who teaches beauty, wellness, and entertainment brands the winning combinations of marketing approaches they need to attract, engage and sell to their audience. And she’s just getting started.

Shante received two bachelor’s degrees in the areas of psychology and marketing from the University of Missouri St Louis In January 2016, while still a sophomore and exotic dancer in college, Shante launched Now Trending Media Marketing, a digital marketing agency that provides websites, branding, and omnichannel marketing solutions for the beauty, wellness, and entertainment industry.

Slay’s main mantra for life is LOVE WHAT YOU, DO WHAT YOU LOVE. Shante Slay has battled depression, anxiety, insecurities, and suicidal thoughts since she was a preteen, but through finding her passion, helping others, and developing better mental coping strategies, Slay has reached new heights

PWH ENTREPRENEUR SPOTLIGHT

Slay’s recent accomplishments include hitting her first 5-figure year, expanding her team, and creating over 30+ marketing strategies that generated an average of 202% increase in conversion rates for her clients

How did you get your start in the marketing industry?

At the time, I was a sophomore in college and went to school for a double major in psychology in criminal justice I was brighteyed, bushy-tailed, and ready to take on the world, to say the least, but I started to lose my passion for the field I’ve always wanted to become a business owner When I was a sophomore in college, I said let’s go ahead and make it happen Hence, I went on Google and looked up the easiest businesses for college students to start with low overhead

One of the positions I came across was at a marketing agency. I didn’t know much about what marketing was besides billboards and TV, but I’d had a lot of other sales jobs I was in journalism in high school and was also an exotic dancer at the time, so I said, hey, maybe these skills would translate to a marketing expert. The next day I dropped my major for criminal justice and decided to pursue a double major in psychology and marketing instead.

Tell us about Now Trending Media Marketing. What was the inspiration behind your brand?

So after I switched my major, I realized that marketing and psychology have a lot to do with consumer behavior and the psychological process people go on before purchasing an item. Buying is a psychological process Marketing is a psychological process So if I was going to start a marketing agency myself, I wanted to make sure that I helped businesses get into the minds of their audience and teach them how to put their buyer first. When I first started, my target audience was just brick-and-mortar businesses, and I knew the type of brick-andmortar business owner I was targeting might come from a generation where they’re not as tech savvy. They don’t know how to use GIFs and emojis or don’t know the difference between lol and LMAO

I wanted to show my audience that marketing doesn’t have to be boring Marketing can be fun! The right strategy, thumb-stopping content, and knowing your audience like the back of your hand are the things that make a brand a trending topic And I wanted to share that with as many business owners as possible

Can you give us your top two tips for creating winning content strategies for new brands?

I would first focus on your audience if you are a new brand I cannot stress that enough If you don’t know what your audience truly wants, needs, desires, struggles with, keeps them up at night, and fills them with joy, you’re already a step behind. It goes deeper than demographics; psychographics are key

The second thing I would recommend for new brands, especially if they don’t have the capital to work with the team yet, is to learn everything they can about marketing funnels and the psychological process a person goes through before buying How does your audience turn from a stranger to a follower and then from a follower to a buyer?

How can entrepreneurs work with Now Trending Media Marketing?

The female boss is ready to go from just the IG boutique to a trending topic. My fullservice digital marketing agency, Now Trending Media Marketing, has just the package! The full, viral marketing campaign handles and all fronts of a brand’s digital presence We do websites, graphics, blogs, social media, influencers, and partnerships, just to name a few If a female boss wants to know more, they can always hit me up on Instagram or check out our website.

What is your definition of a Pretty Woman Who Hustles?

A pretty woman who hustles gets to the money first and foremost, stays humble, and is kind to everyone. A pretty woman who hustles has nothing to do with her looks or how many followers she has. It’s about the impact she leaves on others

PRISTINE BODY AND WELLNESS

ENTREPRENEUR SPOTLIGHT

Carolyn Busby

Carolyn Busby nurtures and leads women to healing and becoming comfortable in their bodies

She is a nurse of 20 years who owns Pristine Body and Wellness, an up-and-coming med spa in Texas that she affectionately calls a “Self-care spa ” She has over 15 certifications in beauty, body contour, and post-op. She is award-winning and internationally trained Her motto is, “I don’t want to just help you look better I want to make you feel better.”

. If you could only use five words to describe yourself, what would they be?

Down to earth, caring, outgoing, witty, sincere

What inspired your start in the medical, body, and spa industry?

I have been a nurse for almost 20 years, so helping people feel better has always been my thing. After some time, I grew dissatisfied and unhappy At my husband’s suggestion, I took some time off to determine what I wanted to do. Other than traveling, going to the spa is one of my favorite things So I decided a med spa would allow me to help people, make people feel better, and still utilize my medical training, all while working for myself

PWH ENTREPRENEUR SPOTLIGHT

What can women expect when entering the doors of Pristine Body and Wellness?

Though it is a med spa, I have coined it a selfcare spa I want women to instantly feel relaxed and at ease upon entry So, that starts with your sense of smell. It smells amazing! Then when you come in, you are greeted by our flower wall containing the company colors. Purple is my favorite color, so we have a purple room The healing sweet is intentionally orange, as we do yoni steams in that space, so I wanted to set the tone for healing the sacral chakra You will always be greeted with a smile and lively conversation (unless your preference is quiet), and your services are provided to your chosen music

What does a typical day look like for you?

So, I hit the ground running I start the day getting my kiddos ready for school Once they are gone, I take a little time to journal, meditate, bathe, and make my way to the shop I’ll be honest, dinner isn’t always cooked. Sometimes the family is either eating leftovers or figuring it out for themselves Lol By evening, about 3-4 nights out of the week , I am in some form of training, class, or zoom as I am always learning and doing what I feel it takes to stay on my game Once the day finally slows down, I spend a little quality time with my husband and then do it all over again

What would you say is the most challenging part of what you do?

I would say home life and entrepreneurial balance I have a nonverbal kiddo with special needs who has a trach and is G-button fed, so it is impossible to just get a sitter for him. That often means my husband is home holding down the fort while I am doing what is necessary for the business. There are many behind-the-scenes things that go into a business, so even when I am home, that is the time for social media engagement, emails, product creation, etc I have to constantly fight off that mom guilt when I cannot be there as much as I want. But in those times, I remind myself that I’m doing it all for them and the preservation of their futures

What advice do you have for an entrepreneur looking to open their own beauty and wellness center?

I would say do your research By research, I don’t just mean the business I mean, research yourself. What are your passions? What are your strengths? What things do you truly enjoy? What services can you do without? Don’t just do what you see everyone else doing or what you THINK you should do Build a menu of services you enjoy so that it will make the long hours, in the beginning, something you look forward to as you see something you truly love come to fruition

What is your definition of a Pretty Woman Who Hustles?

www.pristinebodyandwellness.com

A pretty woman who hustles is a woman who handles her business without prompting from anyone else. She takes charge when needed but does it in a graceful way She juggles all that life throws at her with a smile as she is confident and knows she can accomplish anything she wants She’s a woman by right, her grind is the hustle, and the smile is what makes her pretty on the inside and out.

When did you realize you had a passion for the beauty industry and wanted to start your own business?

In 2016, I launched Kolors by K after graduating with my bachelor’s in Environmental Science from Tuskegee University Studying gave me the opportunity to learn how the environment affects us and vice versa I learned about various products, and nail polish was one of them Being a nail polish connoisseur and always trying different gels, dip powders, and polishes, the scientist in me became curious about its chemical composition, and the results left me in complete shock. Many of the chemicals were banned in other countries and are well-known carcinogens here in the United States

The chemicals found in store bought nail polish were known to have detrimental impacts on people regarding their health, as many of the chemicals are linked to cancers, respiratory issues, and infertility in both men and women. I knew I had to do something, especially knowing how my mother and sister used nail polish products I consulted the opinion of a fellow business owner, and that day my business plan was created. A few short weeks later, I started making polishes in my kitchen

Outside of Academic Achievements and Entrepreneurship, who is Kalauna Carter in four words?

Sincere, Passionate, Empathetic, and Innovative

What inspired your journey into entrepreneurship?

I was inspired by those around me As a young girl, I remember watching my mother and my sister get their nails and always being amazed by their color selections and nail designs I became a nail connoisseur with a collection of over 100 polishes at a young age I never thought about what the chemicals within nail polish were doing to me until I got to college Once I learned, I made it my mission to create healthier nail polish and skin care products for my mom, sister, and all who wear nail polish and its products.

Today, I have handmade over 5,000+ bottles of nail polish Kolors by K collections are available in nail salons nationwide, can be purchased in stores, included in beauty boxes, and featured in several publications I believe every woman deserves to wear a nail polish that is working towards their health and not against it With that, I was determined to develop a healthier nail polish alternative that could benefit all At Kolors by K, our primary focus is and will always be the health and wellness of others, providing healthier alternatives to nail polish products and nail care products

It is the first 10 free nail polish company owned by a woman of color and has received international recognition for having been internationally certified by The Leaping Bunny Program, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), and ECOLOGO International certification for having products and services that are certified for their reduced environmental impact.

At Kolors by K, my mission and focus will always be the health and wellness of others I channel my energy into creating the healthiest alternative of nail polish that works towards your health and not against it Many consumers ready nail polishes contain carcinogenic and toxic chemicals that have been scientifically linked to cancers, infertility, and autoimmune disorders I believe you shouldn’t have to compromise your health to have beautiful and healthy nails That’s where I come in I help alleviate stress by creating 10-FREE (NonToxic), Cruelty-Free, Environmentally Friendly & Vegan nail polish, and nail care products Kolors by K is an inclusive brand for all genders, identities, and races I started this company to provide safe, affordable, and stylish polish that looks good for every gender and skin tone All our Kolors will be showcased using diverse imagery because I believe beauty in all ways is universal and should be shown as such

I want my customers to know that all my products are working toward your health, not against it My goal with each Kolors by K purchase is that each person will feel empowered with my Kolors by providing them with something that could make them feel beautiful, whatever the occasion may be, a special Kolor just for them.

Where do you hope to see your brand in the next 3-5 years?

I See Kolors by K as being an integral part of various retail stores such as Walmarts, Targets, Walgreens, CVS, and Whole Foods Markets, just to name a few I am currently selling in New Leaf Market stores and hope to expand in the future I would like to continue developing and growing my business to be able to make this happen.

What is your definition of a Pretty Woman Who Hustles?

“A woman is the full circle Within her is the power to create, nurture and transform. Therefore, every woman’s success should be an inspiration to another. Her dream is free, but the hustle is sold separately, all while being pretty Never forget how wildly capable women are ”AA

The word hustle means to work hard. It’s someone who does the little things other people won’t do and does them with a sense of joy or, in this case, being pretty with a purpose because they love it. Hustling, to me, means having the determination to succeed and to do whatever it takes to be successful Some people find themselves in a far different situation than those who are proactive and dedicated to their success daily. Those who are hustling ultimately get the results they desire
