EDITOR’S
(NOTES)
Something to Think About by Elder Thomas Williams, PhD I think that we can learn something from Saul of Tarsus (“the apostle Paul”) about telling it like it is. In his epistles, Saul, who we know as Paul, wrote openly about how he mistreated and persecuted the church of God beyond measure (Galatians 1:13). Saul of Tarsus hated the church of the living God (Acts 8:1-2) and wanted to destroy it by any means necessary (Acts 8:3; 9:1-2). Despite his past, God saw fit to put Saul into the ministry and to appoint [him] a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles (2nd Timothy 1:11), but Saul, however, was NOT a disciple of Jesus of Nazareth (Williams, 2015). God chose Saul to preach the gospel while he was yet in his mother’s womb (Galatians 1:15-16). According to Dr. Luke, Saul started preaching Christ after his conversion (Acts 9:25) but how “old” Saul was when he started preaching the gospel is a mystery. Saul did not volunteer to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. In order to get his attention, the Lord Jesus knocked Saul of Tarsus down on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:1-9) and that experience changed Saul’s life in a profound way. God turned Saul of Tarsus around at the height of his rage against the church of God (1st Timothy 1:12; Acts 9:1-5, 21). I think that we can also learn something from the people who came to John to be baptized. When the common people came to John to be baptized, during the baptism, they confessed their sins (Matthew 3:5-6). Can you imagine a candidate for baptism in the twenty-first century confessing his or her sins before he or she is baptized? The Bible says that people confessed their sins but did not say “why” they confessed their sins. Before I was baptized in 1977, I did not confess my sins. In my thirty-five years in the church, I have never heard a person confess his or her sins before he or she were baptized. Saul of Tarsus had a reason for sharing his past with the church, and the people who were baptized by John had a reason for confessing their sins. Before sharing anything about your past with others, seek the Lord for guidance. He will in turn give you the reason for sharing something personal from your past with others.

The Word of God For the Beauty of the Earth by Mary Coleman “For the beauty of the earth, For the glory of the skies, For the love which from our birth Over and around us lies.” Folliott S. Pierpoint
Those of you who know me and/or follow me on Facebook probably know I had a recent change of address from urban to rural living. I moved from my one bedroom, high-rise apartment in the “sky” back to my quaint little two-story fixer-upper in the country. This is my third attempt to make a life in this small country town and in this house which by now is in desperate need of some much overdue love and tender care. My latest move and the decision to do so is filled with testimony of God’s direction, answer to prayer, His love, His mercy, His grace and His provisions. One day I will share my experience of seeking God, waiting on Him and receiving direction from Him. For now I want to fast forward. I want to share the results, the experience of existing in my new living quarters over the past thirty days and what I have learned. One day I was sitting on my front porch and all I could hear were the caws of crows in the distance and the seemingly orchestrated cadence of the buzzing chorus of Cicadas (also referred to as Locust). I know this would be considered noise and quite annoying to some. For me, compared to the hustle and bustle of city living, I found this symphony of nature to be quite peaceful and
relaxing. Just think about it, the fact that the Cicadas only show up every 17 years or so. Click here to listen to my recording of the Cicadas and see if you agree. (Click here to learn more about the Cicadas.) Later that same week I was sitting on the porch of a neighbor just enjoying the beauty of that day. As seen in the picture to the left with the picturesque blue sky, radiant sunshine and fluffy white clouds, all I could think of was how magnificent is this. David wrote in Psalms 19: 1, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.” In Colossians 1:1617 it is written “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether [they be] thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him…” There is so much meat in those two scriptures but let’s move on to 1 Corinthians 2:9 which states, “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” I just want to pause here for a moment to shout “HALLELUJHA” because during my first few weeks of being back home God’s

handiwork has been “in my face.” As such, I am experiencing the peace of God as never before and through that peace I have that unspeakable joy, that kind of joy that wasn’t given by man and can’t be taken away by man. Just think, the scriptures say we have not seen or heard the things God has prepared for us. I am grateful to God because this is just an appetizer for what He has planned for us. I keep hearing over and over in my spirit “For the beauty of the earth” and decided to do a little research on the origin of this popular hymn. I discovered it was a poem written in 1864 by Folliott S. Pierpoint, a native of Bath England. According to Robert J. Morgan, author of “Then Sings My Soul”, Pierpoint was 29 when he found himself walking in the countryside on a beautiful Spring day. Morgan described how Pierpoint saw the ocean of green, the blue dome of heaven, and the winding Avon River cutting through flowery landscape. Overwhelmed with God’s creative brilliance Pierpoint wrote the poem which is now a familiar hymn typically heard during Thanksgiving celebrations. For the beauty of the earth, For the glory of the skies, For the love which from our birth Over and around us lies— Refrain: Lord of all, to Thee we raise, This our hymn of grateful praise. For the wonder of each hour, Of the day and of the night, Hill and vale, and tree and flow’r, Sun and moon, and stars of light— For the joy of human love, Brother, sister, parent, child, Friends on earth and friends above, For all gentle thoughts and mild—
For Thy self, best gift divine To our race so freely given For that great, great love of Thine Peace on earth and joy in heaven In 2016, 152 years later the majesty and power of God’s handiwork still evokes a spirit of thanksgiving and praise for those who will take the time to notice. Morgan also points out another poet, Ralph Waldo Emerson observed that if the constellations appeared only once in a thousand years, imagine what an exciting event it would be. But because they’re there ever night, we barely give them a look. This reminds me of the locust and how infrequent we get to experience their symphony. I am thankful for the privilege and I find myself singing over and over this hymn of thanksgiving which was inspired over a century ago. What I have learned over the past 30 days is the God I serve lives and He wants each one of us to live and enjoy His creations. Trust God in these difficult times. According to Psalms 23:1-3, The Lord is my Shepherd; He will make me to lie down in green pastures: he will lead me beside the still waters. Because He is our Shepherd we can take comfort in his creation, His peace is ours to have and we shall not want for the beauty of the earth! Health Fact: Never stop taking your prescribed medications without consulting your doctor first!!! But do change your mind set when going to the doctor. Instead of asking the doctor what medicine can I take? Ask him first, what can I do to help with the condition. You got to have a self care mindset, so it will change the doctor's mindset as well. It will prompt the doctor to ask himself what can I advise? Instead of what can I prescribe? If you are diagnosed with high blood pressure, ask the doctor about diet, exercise and other lifestyle changes first before going to medications. That's what taking control of your own health is all about!!!!! Youth Trying Your Best and High Expectations by Hollis Jones Do the best you can in the things that interest you. When you set a goal, make somewhat high expectations and try to achieve your ideal. Consider popular role models to emulate. One of my favorite sayings is "Reach for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars." I say this because I often see myself and others setting what I call "complacent goals". We tend to strive for average rather than excellence. I find this type of goal-setting to be an issue, because people, most people always fall slightly short of their goals. Those who want to become average fall slightly short of average; those who want to become good fall slightly short of good; and those who want to become perfect fall slightly short of perfect. Of course I'm aware that no one can be perfect at anything, but I often see people using "nobody can be perfect" as an excuse to not challenge oneself to try to reach their goals. What is there really to be afraid of? I find it very un-American to not try to be outstanding. Never be afraid to strive and look up to someone's expertise in a field, or another’s' ideal body. Naturally, I understand that it is healthy not to overwork yourself and it's good to know that being perfect isn't always possible. That being said, do the best to be the best version of you you can be.
Prayer Taken Out of School by Ernestine Fielder Everyday in school we had morning devotion. It consisted of the pledge of allegiance, prayer and we listened to announcements about the things happening for the day. We weren’t given a choice. This was a tradition handed down year after year. For 12 years I heard the Lord’s Prayer at school at games and other school activities. We had to learn the pledge of allegiance but not once did we have to learn the Lord’s Prayer. Now we make a big issue out this. Prayer was not taken out of school, they took a tradition out of school. People, prayer is within you. Teach your child how to pray at home. Pray with them before they go to school and when they come home. Tell them it's ok to pray to themselves at the lunch table. Tell them it's ok to pray to themselves in school when they feel troubled or scared or just because. Take them to church. I said take them not just send them. Stop giving Satan and his people victory over your life. My grandma use to say there is more than one way to skin a cat (there are always several ways to do something).

Great Is Thy Faithfulness by Missionary Rebecca Seabrook The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. His mercies begin afresh each morning. Every one of us has lived this life making choices every day. Some of the decisions we have made are good and some not so good. Many of us look back over segments of our lives and wish that we could have another “shot” at that response. As time has gone by we have grown, had new experiences and gained a new perspective on the past. Now it is easy to see the folly of a decision and grieve over wrong-doing. The vivid memories of past mistakes, failures and yes, even sins are hard to erase. Even though God has forgiven us, it is hard for us to forgive ourselves. This is where Satan, the accuser, wants us to stay. Let us consider the God’s view of our predicament. First our God is a forgiving God! He sees us as forgiven and has forgotten our sin. In Micah 7:18-19. It says Where is another God like you, who pardon the guilt of the remnant, overlooking the sins of his special people? You will not stay angry with your people forever, because you delight in showing unfailing love. Once again you will have compassion on us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean! – NLT. New mercies begin fresh every morning. Let us jump in the refreshing shower of God’s love and mercy each day! Lord, I thank you for your awesome love. It was your grace and mercy that brought me through. Yesterday is gone forever and I will live today bathed in your mercies.
Testimonial Snippets - Wait on the Lord – Part 2 by Stacie J. There are two main reasons I am sharing messages between my Aunt and I. The first reason is we are blessed by God in many ways that we don't deserve, but He loves us and He wants us to experience His love. He also requires that He get the Glory! The only way that will happen is if we share and let others know how God has blessed us...and how He WILL bless you as well, if you just have faith in Him! Please continue to read my Testimonial Snippets, Part 2 of Wait on the Lord! From Aunt Mary: “How is my lady... those who believe and hope in the Lord will Not be disappointed or put to shame (Isaiah 49:23; Hebrews 10:23; psalm 25:3 1 timothy 4:10)” From Me: Alright Holy Spirit...here is my daily testimony! I applied for a position that I believe was for me...I had an awesome interview, but the position was given to someone else. Though I was very disappointed and felt defeated, I didn't give up and I applied for another opening: Assistant Program Supervisor. I repeated, what God had for me, is for me! I got a call 40 minutes prior to my Aunt’s text that they wanted to offer me the position!! I loudly stated, Thank you Jesus, before I replied to the job offer, YES, I'll take it! “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” (Mark 11:24) In conclusion, I am thankful to have the opportunity to share just one more of many blessings God has bestowed upon me, though I am undeserving! I shared my personal messages between Mary and me because it is no mystery how The Holy Spirit works! She had no idea what I had going on, but she was moved by The Spirit of God to share that scripture with me, because God did NOT want me to keep the good news of what He had just done for me, to myself! As mentioned in part 1, remember to put God first; He answers prayers that are from the heart and that reflect His will. Lastly, you must believe and “Wait on the Lord!”

The Child That Grew by Elder Thomas Williams, PhD
The scriptures talk about a special child that grew. The child that grew was circumcised on the 8th day according to the covenant of circumcision and was baptized by John when he came of age. The child that grew was despised and rejected of men. He was acquainted with sorrows and grief but never complained. The child that grew was God robed in the flesh and was called the Son of God. As a man, the Spirit led the child that grew into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. The child that grew began his earthly ministry when he was thirty years old. God used him to heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out devils, feed large crowds, and preach and teach the word of God in the temple and in other venues. As a man, the child that grew was brutally beaten in so much that he was unrecognizable. Someone spit on, punched, and slapped Him in his precious face. Before he went to the cross, he was deserted by disciples, betrayed by a friend, falsely accused, and lied on. The child that grew came into the world to die for our sins according to the scriptures but could NOT die for our sins as a child. The child that grew willingly laid down his life: he was buried but rose again the third day according to the scriptures. The child that grew fulfilled all things written of him in Torah, the prophets, and the psalms. The child that grew went back to heaven: he sits and stands on the right hand of God. Jesus Christ of Nazareth is the child that grew!

“We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Inspirational Any Road Eventually Leads Back Home by Rainer Coleman I recently took time out and made a much needed road trip back home to where I grew up as a child. The last time having stomped these grounds was around 1990, well over 26 years ago. As I drove along hwy 47 I passed the home of a grade school friend that my father allowed me to attend my first house party. Earth Wind & Fire’s “Saturday Nite” was on heavy rotation, and I was just glad to be there. As I was making the left turn onto rural route 2, the first thing that let me know time has not stood still is the road is now paved, as a child it was a dirt road up until as recent as 15 years ago by my estimate. At this point all the memories started to flow back to when I was a boy and my father, brother and I used to work on his small farm. We did everything from planting field corn to working in one of his huge gardens, cutting firewood and pulpwood. As for livestock, there was a variety, a pony named Bob, cows, hogs, chickens, rabbit beagles and a huge white rabbit simply named “Bunny”. Some of my fondest memories was in the fall waking up early on a Saturday morning and my father would tell us to get the dogs together. We knew what was next and so did they; there were times we would hurt my grandmother’s property or just walk directly behind our home into the woods. There were hunts we would walk so far, later that night we would catch cramps in our legs, Dad would walk by and say “stretch it out it’ll go away” The smell of gunpowder in the cool fall air combined with the baying of a pack of beagles is something only a hunter can appreciate. As always I learned many things every time we hit the woods, listening to the sounds and urging calls of my father communicating with the dogs as they “jumped” and chased rabbits for us to shoot. Having been fortunate to experience how true beagles perform, I have been in a few situations hunting with friends from different places and I always go back to comparing their dogs to my dad’s… no comparison. Now getting back to my return home, I was amazed at just how much has changed but also how much has remained the same, some homes have apparently been abandoned for whatever reasons. Children grow up and move away, family members die, who knows the stories some of those homes could tell of the good times and bad. As I near my old home, I was shocked at how small the house seems now that I’m older; the saying is true “everything seems bigger when you are a child”. The ageless majestic Black Pine trees still stand in the front yard; the hygeraniums haven’t died out yet along with the cherry trees. The droning sound of the 17 year locust is proof that some things never change, they just move on. The values instilled in me as a child growing up in the country is something that will stay with me the rest of my life. We weren’t wealthy by any stretch, but I never went to bed hungry, always had decent clean clothes and a father that placed a high priority on Christian faith. The road we lived on was like a loop off the main drag and as I neared its end, I wondered who the people are that now live in the old home. Do they ever wonder of the good times and sad experienced by the previous owners? Probably not, but maybe one day just as I drove by anonymously reminiscing, one of them will be doing the same. Like the time my brother got a mini bike for Christmas and not quite used to the power right away, popped a wheelie half way across the front yard and through the bushes, with slight damage to the rear fender, we had to come up with a story so that our Dad wouldn’t put the bike up as punishment, so we said we dropped it on the steps taking it on and off the back porch. When I returned home I shared my trip with both my sisters along with pictures, needless to say they were also taken back to a time when things were much simpler because any road eventually leads back home even after the key to the door lock is pulled for the very last time.

A Message from Uma Glow
www.umaglow.com
Hello Remnant Magazine friends! I’d like to introduce myself. I am the owner and CEO of Uma Glow, LLC which is a division of UMA Enterprises, LLC. My slogan is “Let Me Help You LOVE You” by taking care of yourself from the outside in. It is a commandment to honor the vessel that God has given so you can be the best for your family, friends and anyone else that needs you. We are all exposed to chemicals every day through our environment, but we have a choice in what we put into and on our bodies. I encourage everyone to choose a healthy diet with less processed foods. Think about what you last ate. How close was that meal to its natural state? The further away you get from the natural (loaded with ingredients that you can barely pronounce), the closer you get to living less of a quality of life in the future. The same goes for the products you use every day that are applied to your skin and hair. But the good news is you can make the choice to love yourself as God would have you to do! Let’s start with the wonderful products that my business produces. My products are manufactured with certified organic ingredients, fair trade ingredients and essential oils. We do not use any chemicals, fillers or toxic materials. I’ve researched each ingredient used in my products which can be reviewed at your leisure on my website www.umaglow.com. So let me help you love you by using my wonderful products made with love!

Thyne Institute Birthday Celebration The Thyne Institute Memorial Inc. will host a Thyne Institute Birthday Celebration, September 18, 2016, 3 p.m. at the Thyne Memorial Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, 5120 Highway Forty Seven, Chase City, Virginia. According to the Virginia Foundation for Humanities, the Thyne Institute began educating African Americans in Mecklenburg County, Virginia around 1876. J. H. Ashenhurst, the son of a pastor, saw the need for schooling the African American population and began teaching wherever space was available. John Thyne deeded property to the United Presbyterian Church and built a two-story African-American schoolhouse which opened in 1878. The school became the first organized school for African Americans in Mecklenburg County and was accredited by the Virginia Department of Education in 1914. A boarding school was formed to accommodate students from Norfolk, Newport News, Hampton Roads, New York and New Jersey. Enrollment peaked around 1950. The school was purchased in 1946 by the Mecklenburg County Public Education System. According to a board member of the Thyne Institute Memorial Inc., Thyne Institute was in operation until 1953 (that was the last class). By 1970 most of the buildings were torn down but the main building and the president’s house remained intact until the mid-1980s. The Thyne Institute Memorial Inc. was formed in 1998 for the purpose of developing a memorial for the Thyne Institute and interpreting the education that took place at this site. Many prominent educators came out of Thyne Institute. Why not share your story if you know someone or if your life was impacted by someone who got their start because of Thyne Institute. Stay tuned, The Remnant Magazine hopes to do a future article to include pictures and provide more history on Thyne Institute and its impact on the African American People. http://www.aahistoricsitesva.org/items/show/428

Thanking God for the healing He is providing for Dawn! We ask that you remain prayerful with us for her complete healing. “My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body.” Proverbs 4:20-22
Fabrics of Our Lives When the fabric of a quilter's masterpiece becomes frayed and worn, the quilter takes on the task of restoration. The quilter, like a potter, knows how to make the masterpiece whole again. We are the masterpiece of our Maker and He, the Potter, knows how to make us whole again. He knows the fabrics of our lives. Trust in the Lord to mend the fabrics of your life...

Looking FORWARD
“For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death” (2nd Corinthians 7:10). God welcomes everyone who repents with opened arms (Revelation 22:17). For instance, some of the people in the church at Corinth were fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, effeminate, abusers of themselves with mankind, thieves, covetous, drunkards, revilers, and extortioners before they repented and accepted Jesus as Messiah (1st Corinthians 6:9-11). No matter what a person has done, when he or she repents, Jesus makes all things new. The Bible says: “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are become new” (2 nd Corinthians 5:17). Thus, a bank robber, a boldface liar, a corrupt politician, a murderer, a fornicator, an idolater, an adulterer, a homosexual, a lesbian, a bisexual, a transgendered person, a thief, a covetous (jealous) person, an alcoholic, a reviler, and an extortioner can be made a new creature in Christ. In keeping with the word of God, I am making an appeal to people both near and far to seek the Lord while he may be found (Isaiah 55:6) and to repent and believe the gospel while you still can (Mark 1:15; Acts 2:38). Take advantage of the opportunity and time that God is giving you to repent (2nd Peter 3:9).
