“We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies. Martin Luther King, Jr.

(NOTES)

“God desires to show His power through your storm, but is your lack of faith keeping Him from doing so? God brings storms into your life to show His strength and to gain glory from His providence.” Paul Chappell I am reminded of an old hymn, “Learning to Lean on Jesus” and I particularly like this version written by John Stallings: I’m learning to lean, learning to lean, Learning to lean on Jesus. Finding more power than I'd ever dreamed, I'm learning to lean on Jesus. The joy I can't explain is filling my heart, Since the day I met Jesus my King; His blessed Holy Spirit is leading my way, He's teaching and I'm learning to lean. There's glorious vict'ry each day now for me, Since I found His peace so serene; He helps me with each task, if only I'll ask; Ev'ry day now I'm learning to lean. There is glorious victory each day now for me as I recognize the power of the God I serve. Does that mean I always get it right? No, certainly not, but it does mean that I understand where my help comes from whether I stand tall or whether I fall. Either way, I know my God is in control and I can rest in that blessed assurance. With this issue of the Remnant Magazine we address the climate of hate vs. love, anger management and the need to connect with others. It is my hope that you will find a blessing, a golden nugget, a word of encouragement as you read through these pages, as you walk your walk while trusting and depending on God to provide.

The Word of God Anger Issues (Eagle Creek Baptist Church Daily Devotion) Submitted by Carl Barber In your anger do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent. (Psalm 4:4) Everyone’s angry. You, me, your spouse, your most godly friend, your grandma, and yes, your leaders are angry, too. I don’t know of anyone who’s not. Some of us have very explosive anger issues and everyone suffers for it! One of Marvel Comics’ most famous super-heroes is a monster borne out of rage—the Incredible Hulk. In the box-office hit “The Avengers”, New York City was being attacked and overwhelmed by aliens. The Avengers were incomplete and vastly outnumbered without the Hulk. So Captain America turns to Dr. Bruce Banner, the Hulk’s alter-ego, and tells him that “now might be a really good time for you to get angry.” Dr. Banner then replies, “That’s my secret Cap. I’m always angry.” Many of us have secret anger issues. Nobody knows it but you and your family. Or some don’t know it but you. Deep inside you really want to take revenge. You’re just too nice on the outside to actually do it. “What will they think of me?” you say, and so you do nothing except boil inside with anger. In the Old Testament, God had been so angry with Israel so many times you wonder why He put up with them for so long. If God gets angry, doesn’t that justify your anger? Well, believe it or not, the answer is both yes and no. Here’s why. First let’s define anger. Anger is an emotion. And just like the rest of our emotions, it’s also neutral. Therefore, it’s not a sin. According to Dr. James Cecy, “Anger is an emotion created by God for a purpose, particularly to generate energy to change things.” God was angry many times in the Bible but He was completely justified each time. In the Old Testament, He was angry with many nations for their sins but never about petty things. When it comes to us, however, our anger isn’t always justified because we often make a big issue out of small disagreements. Whether you’re anger is justified or not depends on whether it’s directed at sin and injustice or you’re just angry because you’re not getting what you expected to get. A justifiable anger also depends on what you do with it. This is where we often end up sinning. The reference scripture actually expects that we will get angry. It says, “In your anger” or another way of saying it is, “When you are angry…” While anger is expected, sin is not. How we deal with it can always be constructive without being explosive. This emotion gives you the fuel to do something about the reason for your anger. It means God wants you to do what’s right out of something that’s wrong and not to aggravate a wrong situation into something worse. Since anger wants you to change things, the Psalmist tells us to keep silent or to stay calm for a moment. We need time to relax and ask God what we need to do. When we do this, the Lord will guide us to think rationally and discover how He wants us to proceed. Remaining silent shows that we are willing to surrender to God’s will instead of surrendering to our anger.

People & Relationships History of the Irish – Hate Has No Color by Lori-Ann Woodard I recently visited the lush green land of Ireland for work and I was able to do one day of touring. The land is emerald green with a cool climate in the 60’s during the summer months. The land is the greenest I’ve seen besides the young land that springs up in Hawaii. This is because of the multiple rain showers that occur on a daily basis so the constant watering of the ground yields abundantly healthy vegetables and fruit. As we rode the highways, you can see the beautiful rolling hills with happy sheep and cattle grazing in the grass looking very satisfied. The people are cheerful, humble and friendly. Things look great now, but there was a time when Ireland was hit with dire famine and disease which destroyed the poor working class’s main food source: the potato. They (poor Catholic Irish) were under the (Protestant) British rule at that time and they harvested for their dictators who took the prime food of the land and left the poor to hugely depend on the potato. Nevertheless, these poor farmers were relatively healthy since the potato is rich in vitamins and provided them with sustenance. Unfortunately in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s, the nation was hit with a disease that spread through the potato that caused millions of the poor to starve. This event was later reclassified as genocide. Why? Because the Brits chose not to help their starving indentured servants. At one point they even leveraged the event to force the people to choose starvation or conversion to Protestantism. As the tour guide broke down this history, my mind began to flood with my own history as an African American and the things that are going on now in America. It made me see the bigger picture that hatred has no color. We should be careful when we create groups such as Black Lives Matter. Do they? Well of course black lives matter, but so does everyone else! In this country we experience discrimination on so many levels. Being Black or looking like an Arab can be equally as dangerous. I wanted to share this history of white on white hate for us to check ourselves and realize we are at war with an enemy that wants to wipe us off the face of the earth. This is a spiritual warfare and the way to diffuse it is through God’s Love. When you love one person with God’s Pure love, it will spread like wildfire to another person until the exponential equation grows to outweigh the hate. So start loving yourself first by being wise to align your heart with God. Then you can spread His Pure Love which is the most powerful force in the Universe. I guarantee you will begin to see results. It only takes one.

Time to Cut the F.A.T. (Fear, Anxiety, and Trepidation) This month the concept is mental and spiritual health. The country is currently going through difficult times. There is a lot of uncertainty in the political arena, misunderstandings and miscommunications among law enforcement and US citizens of different races and religious beliefs, and a great deal of fear, anxiety, and trepidation about future directions and future opportunities. Regardless of your affiliations, regardless of your past experiences, and regardless of your views, the only answer is to join the conversation and to engage others in the most peaceful way you can. It is time to be constructive not destructive. It is time to become informed so that you can make the right choices for you and for your family. This is a time for faith, unity, and understanding. It is a time to embrace the things we all have in common and not focus on the things that may be different. The “NEIL” experience is based on the life and beliefs of one very special man. His messages were simple. They included the love of life, the respect of others, and the desire to help every person with resources and spiritual guidance. In living by these principles, every act of kindness is a step in that direction. When you are alone, seek the guidance of a friend, a family member, or a person you trust. When you are uncertain and afraid, look to prayer and meditation to guide and carry you through the difficult times. When you need special assistance, don’t be ashamed to ask for help. Fear, Anxiety, and Trepidation halts us in our tracks. It does not allow us to move forward. It stunts our growth and it is bad for the soul. The last thing to lose is hope. It empowers us, strengthens us, and guides us to achieve the best that life has to offer. Cut the F.A.T. from your life today!

Youth Favoritism by Hollis Jones I find these days that people my age often stick to themselves and their peers. This is understandable, friends are always nice and familiarity is very comfortable, but with this nature tends to come the fear of meeting new people. It seems like in school you have to make such an effort to talk to someone outside of your social group. So quick are people to say things like "I don't know you" or have general displeasure with the thought of conversing with someone you usually don't talk to. Meeting new people is essential to moving forward in life. Those who have prospered knew people that could aid them or help them learn something. Think of it as networking. When some people succeed and other people don't, people become angry while they think of reasons on how they've gotten so far. Most people like to assume it's a black/white issue, or a rich/poor issue, but I like to think it has to do with favoritism. People in positions of power tend to use that power to aid friends, family, and allies. Don't be afraid to socialize with people you haven't met, for it can be to your own benefit. Oftentimes, it's not what you know, but who you know.

How to Make Good Friends Tips on Meeting People and Making New Friends According to HelpGuide.org, friends have a huge impact on your happiness. Good friends relieve stress, provide comfort and joy, prevent loneliness and isolation, and even strengthen your health. But close friendships don’t just happen and many of us struggle to meet new people and develop quality connections. Who knows us better than our Creator, in Genesis 2:18, “the Lord God said, it is not good for the man to be alone.” So He made Eve. Unfortunately, meeting new people and developing quality connections isn’t that cut and dry for some of us today. For some, meeting people and making friends takes effort on our part and a good place to start is learning how to love self and others according to 1 Corinthians 13 . Also visit the Help Guide.org website at http://www.helpguide.org/articles/relationships/how-to-makefriends.htm for tips and other helpful information on meeting people and making new friends. SPORTS Michael Jordan Speaks Out On Racial Strife by Lamar Battle All time NBA great Michael Jordan addressed the ongoing spate of police shootings of unarmed black men and the violent retaliatory responses of some African Americans to those shootings. After spending most of his career avoiding controversial topics as they related to race and politics Jordan felt compelled to speak out and show support for both sides of the apparent conflict between Police officers and African Americans throughout the country. Michael Jordan issued his statement through the site, "The Undefeated" and it read as follows: As a proud American, a father who lost his own dad in a senseless act of violence, and a black man, I have been deeply troubled by the deaths of African-Americans at the hands of law enforcement and angered by the cowardly and hateful targeting and killing of police officers. I grieve with the families who have lost loved ones, as I know their pain all too well. “I was raised by parents who taught me to love and respect people regardless of their race or background, so I am saddened and frustrated by the divisive rhetoric and racial tensions that seem to be getting worse as of late. I know this country is better than that, and I can no longer stay silent. We need to find solutions that ensure people of color receive fair and equal treatment AND that police officers – who put their lives on the line every day to protect us all – are respected and supported "Over the past three decades I have seen up close the dedication of the law enforcement officers who protect me and my family. I have the greatest respect for their sacrifice and service. I also recognize that for many people of color their experiences with law enforcement have been different than mine. I have decided to speak out in the hope that we can come together as Americans, and through peaceful dialogue and education, achieve constructive change. “To support that effort, I am making contributions of $1 million each to two organizations, the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s newly established Institute for Community-Police Relations and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. The Institute for Community-Police Relations’ policy and oversight work is focused on building trust and promoting best practices in community policing. My donation to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the nation’s oldest civil rights law organization, will support its ongoing work in support of reforms that will build trust and respect between communities and law enforcement. Although I know these contributions alone are not enough to solve the problem, I hope the resources will help both organizations make a positive difference. “We are privileged to live in the world’s greatest country – a country that has provided my family and me the greatest of opportunities. The problems we face didn’t happen overnight and they won’t be solved tomorrow, but if we all work together, we can foster greater understanding, positive change and create a more peaceful world for ourselves, our children, our families and our communities.” Jordan managed to put his money where his mouth is with separate donations of one million dollars each to the NAACP legal defense fund and the International Association of Chiefs of Police Institute For Community-Police Relations.

Michael Jordan Speaks Out On Racial Strife by Lamar Battle (Cont’d from page 13) While applauding Jordan for finally making his voice heard after an entire NBA career of sitting on the fence and making statements like "Republicans buy shoes too" I have to wonder where did this commitment to social justice come from? Well, look no further than the 2016 ESPY awards sponsored by ESPN. At the start of the show LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and Dwayne Wade spoke on the violence particularly the shootings by police officers of unarmed African American men in New Orleans and Minnesota. All of the players were impressive but LeBron James managed to convey a genuine determination to do whatever he could to help in his community but more importantly to inspire other athletes to do the same. What does this have to do with Michael Jordan? Michael Jordan, more than any other athlete in history has a brand that is unsurpassed in terms of its marketing reach and profitability. Possessing a net worth of over a billion dollars and an NBA team (Charlotte Hornets) the Michael Jordan clothing line & shoe sales have literally changed the way people all over the world dress as sport and active wear have become the norm. Throw back Jordan brand shoes cost upwards of 200 dollars even though they are exact replicas of Michael's first Air Jordan's. Michael Jordan is smart and highly successful. So he had to notice LeBron's slow ascent to legendary status as an athlete who wins on the court and off, a player who will occasionally speak out when injustices occur. LeBron James accomplished a seemingly impossible task of winning a major sports championship for the state of Ohio. (His Cleveland Cavaliers won the 2015-16 NBA title). The Cavaliers also made NBA history as the first team to come back from a 3-1 deficit in the Finals to win. But don't stop there, taking into account what Lebron has accomplished so far in winning three NBA championships It is also worth noting that he has also pledged 41 million dollars to send 1100 Akron Ohio kids to college. That's right, I said 41 million! So, when LeBron, Dwayne Wade, Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony stood on that stage and vowed to follow in the footsteps of Jim Brown, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Bill Russell and Muhammad Ali one has to wonder just how did Michael Jordan feel about these events and more importantly, his own place in history. Michael has endured some criticism through the years for what some perceive as a profit above all else approach but M J has a solid record regarding charitable contributions. However, for the first time Michael Jordan has decided to offer his opinion on a controversial topic. Could it be that Michael Jordan has finally found his social voice while risking an image that has been carefully crafted and nurtured through the years? Or... Could it be that Michael can see the slow erosion of his brand and or market share? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain considering the state of ever increasing violence in this country one can't really complain about any athlete trying to contribute to the cause no matter the motive. Moving forward though it will be interesting to see just how far LeBron James will go and to what degree will his candor regarding social issues expand.

Testimonial God Provides (Part 2) by Elder Thomas Williams, PhD I could not substitute teach in the county for a year for reason to personal to share in this article. I watched the school calendar and kept telling myself that I am going to reapply but would not do it. The Lord stepped in and laid it on my heart to reapply to sub. He reminded me every day for weeks until I submitted to his will. I was glad when I obeyed because I reapplied just before the county put a “freeze” on hiring subs. Because I obeyed the Lord, he blessed me to work eighteen days during the 2008-2009 school year but 50 days during 2009-2010. I got my subbing job back but things were different. First, I was under doctor’s care and took medications every morning. One of the medications caused me to urinate every fifteen minutes. Second, I had a hard time holding my urine and getting someone to cover my classes at times was the functional equivalent of a nightmare. Sometimes, I got someone to cover my classes but more often than not held the urine until the bell rang. I was miserable. Holding the urine hurt like no bodies business. Third, I had a hard time getting assignments closer to home and was forced to travel across the county in order to work. As a rule, I got up every morning at or before 5 a.m. and left home no later than 5:30 a.m. in order to walk two miles in the dark to catch one of three buses. It was cold outside and I was scared. At the end of the day, I caught four buses back home until I got a ride from a pastor and his wife, who were teachers in a certain middle school. Because of health reasons, I did not last long as a sub because I had a medical related accident on the job. I had close calls but always made it to the bathroom just in the nick-of-time. One day, it happened. I was at a certain middle school and after signing in went straight to the bathroom. No sooner than I relieved myself and walked out the bathroom, I felt the sensation to urinate again but could not. I went into another bathroom and stayed as long as I could unto I was force to leave the bathroom in order to get to class on-time. I went to my class but as time progressed felt the urine slowly come down. I tried to hold it but could not. I was in great pain and got up to find a teacher to cover my class. Before I knew it, the urine came down but no one saw it. When word got out that I had urinated on myself, none of the school administrators came to my classroom to check on me. I did not tell anyone because I was embarrassed, humiliated, and did not know who to tell. I had to meet with a professional standards committee. They voted to remove from the substitute teacher’s list. I wrote a letter of appeal and filed a grievance but was not reinstated as a substitute teacher. No matter what you go through God will help you. The psalmist declares, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). Being removed from the list of substitute teacher caused me to lose thousands of dollars but not my faith or mind. I drew unemployment and worked a few short-term professional jobs and was still able to pay my rent, bills, eat, and be a cheerful giver (2nd Corinthians 9:7). During this time, God spoke to me and gave me peace. Being sick and being removed from the list of substitute teachers opened up a new world for me. I sat down one day in January of 2009 and started writing my first book. No matter what you go through, ask the Savior to help you and do not give in to defeat.

Dr. Thomas Williams is a seasoned substitute teacher and college professor.

A Message from Uma Glow

www.umaglow.com

Hello Remnant Magazine friends! I’d like to introduce myself. I am the owner and CEO of Uma Glow, LLC which is a division of UMA Enterprises, LLC. My slogan is “Let Me Help You LOVE You” by taking care of yourself from the outside in. It is a commandment to honor the vessel that God has given so you can be the best for your family, friends and anyone else that needs you. We are all exposed to chemicals every day through our environment, but we have a choice in what we put into and on our bodies. I encourage everyone to choose a healthy diet with less processed foods. Think about what you last ate. How close was that meal to its natural state? The further away you get from the natural (loaded with ingredients that you can barely pronounce), the closer you get to living less of a quality of life in the future. The same goes for the products you use every day that are applied to your skin and hair. But the good news is you can make the choice to love yourself as God would have you to do! Let’s start with the wonderful products that my business produces. My products are manufactured with certified organic ingredients, fair trade ingredients and essential oils. We do not use any chemicals, fillers or toxic materials. I’ve researched each ingredient used in my products which can be reviewed at your leisure on my website www.umaglow.com. So let me help you love you by using my wonderful products made with love!

ccording to Matthew 7:7-11 New International Version (NIV) the Word says:

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”

As we look forward to Issue 8 of the Remnant Magazine we will continue to acknowledge Him in all our ways for he is faithful to do all he said he would do… I will share my personal testimony of how my awesome God has provided over these last few months. We will continue to look forward to greater things as we lean on Jesus. Mary Coleman
