EDITOR’S

(NOTES)

“Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things” Pastor James Hawkins, St. Timothy COGIC Earlier this year, Pastor James Hawkins, St. Timothy COGIC, shared with his congregation that this year he wasn’t making a “New Year’s Resolution.” I immediately received his next words; he said the theme for 2017 is “Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things!” Not only was I inspired, I was reminded of my own community and all the good works going on around me. I was reminded of how during the month of February we are programmed to celebrate Black History as it is called “Black History Month.” The month is typically filled with black history programs remembering the good works of those gone on before us. Don’t get me wrong, I am a strong advocate for history because I believe History helps us understand change and how the society we live in came to be. I believe knowledge and understanding of our past helps us understand and appreciate our present and hopefully prepares us for a better future. During the month of February 2017 I was inspired once more when I heard Pastor Linda Goode, Greater Union Baptist Church; say during their Black History Program “We don’t just be Black in February.” I had already decided that the Remnant Magazine would highlight ordinary people throughout the year and Pastor Goode just confirmed one of our objectives for 2017. Starting with this February Issue the magazine will highlight/recognize ordinary people who are blazing trails and doing extraordinary things in our communities. These people are the pillars in our communities, making a difference in a season when chaos is all around us. See page 12 for more details on The Remnant Magazine Pillar Award for Community Service. We continue to Look Forward seizing every opportunity to inspire, motivate and encourage ourselves and others to be what God has called us to be and do what He has called us to do.

The Word of God Looking For A Few Good Men and Women by J Quest A young man (we’ll call him Nigel) entered my office late yesterday afternoon expecting to receive a new hire orientation briefing. It seemed apparent that his expectation was to get hired as soon as possible so he could resume drawing a paycheck. We began conversing, exchanged pleasantries, in an effort to set the tone for our brief introductory session. As I explained our operations to him, I asked him what he wanted out of life…after all most of us have goals, dreams, hopes and aspirations that we seek to fulfill. He then sort of blurted out that he had seen visions, given to him by god(?). He then quickly continued that he wanted to help humanity. When asked, in what way he desired to help humanity he exclaimed that he wanted to help people understand how to repair cars and possibly learn how to repair computers. When I asked him how the visions were revealed to him and who had given him the visions he quickly told me he wasn’t sure but he thought god(?) had done so. I asked him to tell me more about this god(?) that he was referring to; he quickly said, “I don’t know who or what he, she or it is!” I was astonished at his answer because, after all, this is the ‘bible belt’ and I guess I expected a little more bible literacy and understanding (about God) to flow from his lips in frank conversation. We sometimes make assumptions about people believing they are in great relationship and in good standing with the Lover of their soul. This assumption is dangerous because it may lead us to ‘do nothing’ and not witness to those God may have placed directly in our path. Discerning that he didn’t seem to know much about the source of his visions I asked him if I wrote a check and gave it to him would he reasonably be able to cash it without his name being written on it. He quickly responded, as hoped, that he would not be able to cash the check. We then discussed that God has a distinct name; Nigel didn’t realize that God was known by the name Jehovah in the Old Testament. Jehovah, as you know, is one among many other names that identified God by His character and attributes. In addition to Jehovah, God Almighty was known by compound names with El, such as El Shaddai (God Almighty), El Elyon (Most High or Most High God) or El Olam (Everlasting God) to randomly name a few of the sacred names of God as revealed in the scriptures. We know that the name JESUS is the Greek form of the Hebrew Jehoshua, meaning ‘Jehovah is salvation.’ We also know that neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved (Acts 4:12). Salvation can only be found in the name Jesus Christ! So as you might imagine, we explained to Nigel that Jesus Christ is God and that we ought to reverence His name by yielding to Him in repentance. And repentance, and belief, shall lead to eternal life as we submit to God’s salvation plan as recorded in His word. When I asked Nigel about his visions he said he saw a man dressed in a white robe seemingly suspended in mid-air. He appeared to be in the clouds and was wearing a white robe with a wide golden belt. The Man in the vision told Nigel, “I’ll be back.” In his second dream he saw a big rainbow with beautiful colors; in his vision he knew the colors of the rainbow represented the fruit of the Spirit. Nigel was stoked to learn that the Book of Revelation describes Jesus in a similar fashion to what he experienced in that particular vision (Revelation 1:13-15). Nigel was also surprised to hear that the explanation of the rainbow can be found in Genesis 9:11-14. God’s mercy, love and protection is revealed to us in countless numbers of ways each and every day! Nigel and I were able to have a wonderful conversation about the Lord Jesus Christ vividly describing His finished work on Calvary. He agreed that if there is a creation, there must be a Creator…if there is a design, it follows that there must be a Designer and if there is a building there must be a Builder. He thoroughly understood this concept and was ready to dive into a deeper conversation about the Lord. He agreed to read some designated scriptures with an agreement that we would talk again tomorrow after he completes his pre-employment audiometric testing and drug test.

Sports Dempsey Willard - A Coach Who Gives Back To the Community by Lamar Battle Former Saint Paul College student Dempsey Willard (Class of 76) has made quite the name for himself in Chicago coaching circles. The Whitney Young High School boys and girls head coach has achieved success on and off the tennis court by putting the needs of his students first and plain old fashioned hard work. The Remnant Magazine (RM) caught up with Coach Willard (DW) and his wife Toni to talk about his career and the influences that have propelled him. RM: First off, it’s good to see you again. How are things since your days playing basketball at SPC ? DW: Good to see you to my brother, I am doing well and I am eternally grateful for what Saint Paul's College has done for me. RM: I remember you as a basketball player, how did you get started in tennis? DW: Well during my time teaching in Virginia (Elementary Education Major) I made lasting friendships with some of the business leaders in Lawrenceville VA. After winning a bet with one of the business owners I decided to give tennis a try. I spent time in Richmond V.A. playing and working with the tennis coach O.G.Walker, credited for working with and helping Arthur Ashe. I also traveled to Maryland where I played against NBA star in the making John Lucas, who also happened to be an outstanding tennis player. After graduation I took a teaching position in Chesterfield VA while coaching three teams and eventually I earned my certification as tennis pro. RM: Do you have any coaching influences? DW: Moses Gollatt, James Price and Pernell Sims. RM: You mentioned Saint Paul's College, What are some of your memories in terms of how Saint Paul's prepared you? DW: Most all I learned how to get along with others, to be worldly but most importantly to view all of life as an opportunity to always grow and learn.

Dempsey Willard - A Coach Who Gives Back to the Community by Lamar Battle (Continued from page 9) One thing I will always remember is the impact religion professor Father Easley had on me especially when as part of an assignment in his class I completed a paper on Infinity which I learned later explains tennis to a degree as a sport that utilizes continuous motion. RM: I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that this year you coached teams that finished 2nd and 4th in the State. You were also the 1st African American in State history to win Coach of the Year, keeping that in mind how do you prepare your teams to compete? DW: I would lead by example by always being prepared and on time. I also utilized my captains to the fullest. RM: Would you say that during your time at Whitney Young High School here in Chicago that you have received the support you needed? DW: Yes, when I served as an assistant to head coach Ed Cruzat the tradition of winning was established. Principle Joyce Kenner has always been there with support and assistance. Parents like Will Hobert have never failed to provide support and I have to also credit people like Kamau Murray of the Excess Foundation for Inner City Youth. There have been many others but none more important than my lovely wife Toni who is always there for me. Toni has helped me through tough times with her love and affection.

and role model. RM: Any thoughts on the violence that impacts the lives of young people in Chicago and around the Nation? DW: The violence makes me sad and I wish that I could do more but we cannot overlook the impact of social media in the lives and choices of our children. RM: Let me ask a couple of closing questions? Who was the best player you ever coached? DW: Gabby Moore. RM: Why ? DW: Because of her heart and desire. RM: Do you still play yourself? DW: I do, in a 40 and older league and I provide individual lessons. RM: Federer or Nedal? DW: Federer. RM: Why? DW: He plays the whole court and he has the heart of a champion. RM: As an individual who puts it all on the line for others I guess you would know. DW: Thank you.

RM: Do you see tennis as a growing sport in the inner city? DW: I really hope so and I am doing all that I can to raise awareness and participation in the sport. RM: Can you provide an example? DW: Well, Ed Cruzat and I always made a practice to bring on any kid that was interested in tennis. We never told a kid no and to a large degree we experienced a lot of success in developing our young people on and off the court.

I would lead by example by always being prepared and on time. Coach Dempsey Willard

I also strongly believe in education and growth so I take every opportunity to learn and develop myself as a coach “Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. Romans 11:5 Page 11 of 28

Looking For A Few Good Men and Women by J Quest (Continued from page 7) I’m very excited about the prospect of dialoguing with him tomorrow to help him grow deeper in his knowledge about God. We should never assume that another person’s soul is in good standing with the only God there is. A little bit of respectful probing, as we’re being led of the Lord, may yield eternal dividends if we will continue to follow the leading and prompting of the Spirit of God. Our Lord is in the soul saving business and is looking for a few good men and women to help lead precious souls to the Man from Galilee where the weary and downtrodden can find rest unto their soul…! Please keep ‘Nigel’ in your prayers as we continue to minister (serve) unto his spiritual needs. Our prayer is that he will receive the glorious gospel message that is able to sanctify his whole body, soul and spirit in Christ Jesus…in Jesus’ name we pray. God bless!

What Is the “Pillar Award for Community Service?” The meaning behind this award is THE REMNANT MAGAZINE in the name. This award is for the individuals in our community who continue to lift us up, provide inspiration, demonstrate support and are respected in their community. Individuals recognized by The Remnant Magazine Pillar Award For Community Service are typically hardworking citizens exhibit the spirit of a giver more than a taker; often engaging in voluntary work and taking up worthy causes. The individuals recognized as recipients of this award will be recognized because their work is a manifestation of our mission to inspire, encourage, motivate and help educate others about the things that really matter in life. This is our way of recognizing and encouraging the ordinary people all around us who are doing extraordinary things. We are excited to share that the first recipient of this award is Pastor James Hawkins. We thank him for his dedicated service which includes 34 years in the ministry and the inspiration he gives so freely. Thank you Pastor Hawkins for reminding us that WE ALL can do extraordinary things! Remember, God uses ordinary people! Through faith, Moses used the staff in his hand to accomplish many miracles to include dividing the Red Sea and David used a sling shot and five smooth stones to take down Goliath!

“Faith Walkers” by Mary Coleman

“To be this transparent, is a huge step of faith for me! I am so grateful to have you, loving family and friends supporting not just me but all those affected by Multiple Sclerosis.”

Walking by faith and not by sight is not as easy as it sounds but it is something we all must do if we intend to finish this race and receive the crown of life. I recently received correspondence from a relative and with permission I am sharing a portion of that correspondence for two reasons: 1) Asking your support in the fight against MS; 2) Asking for your prayers, your prayers to celebrate the courage that it takes to share and the strength that will be needed to fight this fight. Below is the story that was shared:

“As you know, I have had some health challenges the past couple of years. Well, in June of 2015 after many doctor’s visits, various tests and labs, my doctors concluded the symptoms, my tests and body functions presented are related to Multiple Sclerosis. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a disease that affects Faith Walker every person affected by it differently. Statistics show that MS may not affect African Americans as commonly as it affects other ethnic groups so it may not be something we are familiar with seeing in our culture, but knowledge and awareness is needed. Over this last year, my days have looked a lot different than they did before but through it all the Faithfulness of God has met me every step of the way. I would like to let you know how much I have appreciated the graciousness of your patience and kindness to help where you could even when you didn’t understand the whole story. Thank you for your understanding my delay in sharing this with you. Along this journey the Lord and I are walking step by step, one moment at a time as I continue to walk by faith, not by sight and living my life in a manner consistent with my confident belief in God’s promises according to the Word of God in 2 Cor. 5:7 (AMP). I thank my Heavenly Father for giving me the courage to come this far in telling you, those who are dear to me more of the specifics that I have not shared with others right now. I thank God for giving me the courage and the strength to participate in the upcoming MS walk for the very first time. To be this transparent, is a huge step of faith for me! I am so grateful to have you, loving family and friends supporting not just me but all those affected by Multiple Sclerosis. Whether you are able to participate in the walk or give monetarily at this time your faithful prayers are still the greatest support I need. On Saturday, May 6, 2017, we will be participating in a MS Walk… a walk to create a world free of MS. Walk MS helps us team up with friends, loved ones and co-workers to change the world for everyone affected by MS. Our team can get us closer to realizing our goal to STOP MS in its tracks, RESTORE lost function and END MS forever. Every step counts. Every dollar helps. Every connection matters. We are stronger together! You can learn more about Walk MS at www.walkms.org.”

History Historically Black Schools – Mecklenburg County Virginia by Mary Coleman So much history would be lost if it were not for people like Glanzy Spain, his wife Jean and the faithful supporters of the organization of Historically Black Schools of Mecklenburg County. During the month of February the Spains and other dedicated organization members of the organization set up an impressive display of artifacts dating as far back as 1925. The exhibit at the Thyne Memorial Presbyterian Church, Chase City, Virginia (located on Highway 47) featured history commemorating the segregated-education system that served the Black communities of Mecklenburg County.

Representing The Remnant Magazine I visited this museum display on Monday, February 27, 2017 and had an opportunity to speak with Mr. Spain. He shared that the 501 (C) (3) Charter organization was established about four years ago in hopes of salvaging and preserving what was left of the communities’ Black history prior to desegregation. The four Black schools in the County were: Thyne, Mecklenburg County Training School, East End and West End. What I remember most is when the schools were desegregated the existing high schools were stripped of their names and became Jr. High Schools to the existing white schools and the same with the elementary school resulting in an erasure of the history of the existing Black schools leaving no trace of the black heritage. It has always bothered me that our heritage meant so little to those empowered to make these change decision. Glanzy commented that the Organization has a meeting scheduled for March 25, 2017. Their agenda will include a discussion of a fundraiser/ letter campaign, their goal to obtain land through purchase or donation and the construction of a permanent home for the museum. The construction of a building would not only serve as a museum but would also be a place for reunions and other functions. “It would be a place we will be able to call our own here in Mecklenburg County” said Mr. Spain. In talking with Mr. Spain he reminded me of our not too distant neighbors in Prince Edward County and their struggles during the years of desegregation. According to Wikipedia “the struggle to integrate the county's schools was one of the longest in the country. The county eventually refused to fund any public schools rather than integrate, as part of a statewide anti-integration effort known as Massive Resistance, and there were no public schools 1959-64. As a result of their struggle I learned from Mr. Spain that they now have The Robert Russa Moton Museum. According to Wikipedia the museum is “popularly known as the "Moton Museum" or "Moton" and is a historic site and museum at 900 Griffin Boulevard in Farmville, Prince Edward County, Virginia. It is located in the former Robert Russa Moton High School, considered "the student birthplace of America's Civil Rights Movement" for its role in providing a majority of the plaintiffs in the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education case desegregating public schools. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1998, and is now a museum dedicated to that history. The museum (and school) were named for African-American educator Robert Russa Moton. A Message from Uma Glow

www.umaglow.com

Hello Remnant Magazine friends! I’d like to introduce myself. I am the owner and CEO of Uma Glow, LLC which is a division of UMA Enterprises, LLC. My slogan is “Let Me Help You LOVE You” by taking care of yourself from the outside in. It is a commandment to honor the vessel that God has given so you can be the best for your family, friends and anyone else that needs you. We are all exposed to chemicals every day through our environment, but we have a choice in what we put into and on our bodies. I encourage everyone to choose a healthy diet with less processed foods. Think about what you last ate. How close was that meal to its natural state? The further away you get from the natural (loaded with ingredients that you can barely pronounce), the closer you get to living less of a quality of life in the future. The same goes for the products you use every day that are applied to your skin and hair. But the good news is you can make the choice to love yourself as God would have you to do! Let’s start with the wonderful products that my business produces. My products are manufactured with certified organic ingredients, fair trade ingredients and essential oils. We do not use any chemicals, fillers or toxic materials. I’ve researched each ingredient used in my products which can be reviewed at your leisure on my website www.umaglow.com. So let me help you love you by using my wonderful products made with love!

Editor’s Choice! #4 The Big Rig I did a cross country trip with my sister and her family back in the 90’s. Her husband did all the driving with the five of us in a Bronco pulling a pop-trailer. Oh what an awesome memory! During that trip we witness a lot of retirees who made vacationing a hobby. Some of them said they sold their homes, purchased the RVs and they just travel from one campsite to another. I thought back then that I would love to be able to travel that way… Well it’s possible! Make it happen. RV dealers rent those big rigs for surprisingly reasonable fees. There are special resorts all over the country that cater to big motor homes. Research an itinerary that works for your family and get out on the road!

Use Your Gift by Chief Editor The Remnant Magazine is another branch of God’s Army, a place where you can stir up the gift of God which is in you according to 1 Corinthians 16:13-14. Perhaps it’s that something you’ve always wanted to do but for whatever reason could never get to. Well, procrastinate no further, just step out on faith. It is in this season that God is calling you to operate in His power. Never mind your neighbor it’s you He wants. Use what He has given you and join the call to battle to reach souls for Christ! Help us as we seek to inspire, encourage, motivate and help educate others in the things that are pleasing in God’s sight. We need your help; we need your ideas, so consider joining our team to use your writing skills (journalistic, creative writing, etc). See page 19 for guidelines. We also need people willing to invest time as proofreaders. It is said, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.” What could be worse is to meet face to face with God and have to explain why you wasted the gifts he gave you. So come on out onto the battlefield and help us fight the good fight.

“Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.” Romans 11:5 Page 25 of 28
