EDITOR’S

(NOTES)

Closing Out 2016 by Mary Coleman “ For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 We are counting our blessings as we close out the year 2016. We are thankful for so many things, shelter, food, family, friends and most of ALL, God’s love. We are thankful for those things seen and unseen. We are thankful for the good days and the bad days. We continually give thanks and praises to our Lord and Saviour. 1. Psalm 68:19 - Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears us up; God is our salvation. Selah 2. Psalm 103:2 - Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, 3. Ephesians 5:20 - Giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 4. Psalm 105:1 - Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! 5. Psalm 116:12 - What shall I render to the LORD for all his benefits to me? 6. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 - Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 7. Psalm 107:43 - Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD. 8. Psalm 118:1 - Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! When we look back over 2016 it will be to remember the goodness of the Lord, the people He allowed us to meet and the projects we were able to initiate and/or complete. We thank God for three very special people, Elder Neil Woodard, Rainer Coleman and Elder Thomas Williams, PhD who greatly impacted the lives of many through their daily walk and contributions to this magazine. They are sorely missed. We will remember the lessons we have been taught through our trials to make us stronger and better equipped us to continue to fight the good fight. We will close 2016 with thanksgiving and open 2017 knowing that God’s plans for us are better than any failed dreams, unmet goals or interrupted plans we might have had for ourselves.

Love the LORD, all his faithful people! The LORD preserves those who are true to him, but the proud he pays back in full. Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD. Psalm 31:23-24

My Friend and Brother Elder Dr. Thomas Williams by Bishop Michael V. Robinson I first saw Thomas Williams at The Gospel Service (Code word for the "Black Service" on Military Bases) on George Air Force Base, Victorville, CA in May of 1982. He had a ready smile and a beautiful sweet spirit. I recognized the call of The LORD upon his life right away and began to counsel with him about it. Brother Thomas as we called him then struggled with being called to the ministry because the leadership in the church he was attending wouldn't acknowledge it. I told him that it didn't matter if they ever acknowledged it or not as long as The LORD and he knew that it was so. The LORD proved it to him when he went home to Newark, NJ and visited a church. When the person who was leading the service saw him enter she said, "Thank God for the minister who just walked it..." He marveled at that! This fulfilled two of our stalwart scriptures, 2 Cor. 13:1B "In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established” and 1Thess. 5:21 "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good." He would come to our home so we could "chat" as he called it. We delved in the word of God, always "turning pages" as I told him we must do... Brother Thomas Williams was a Man of Excellence, very studious both secularly and in religious education. He was discharged from the military and left California around 1986. We lost contact for about 20 years until one day when I received a note in the mail from Dr. Thomas Williams; he had found me on Facebook...

Left: Dr. Thomas Williams. Right: Bishop Michael Robinson.

I was overjoyed to hear from my old friend and brother Thomas Williams. It did not surprise me at all that he had obtained his PhD, was a Professor, an Author or that he had been ordained an Elder. We've spent over a decade keeping in contact with each other, sharing with each other and loving each other. He paid me one of the greatest compliments that I have ever received. He told that me that in his class syllabus he always states that they would use the "Michael V. Robinson method and turn pages..." I was floored! I invited him to visit Bethel Church of Christ, my home church in Harlem, N.Y. which he did on three occasions when he'd come home to Newark to visit his mother. On his third visit last year, I finally had the pleasure of worshipping with him and hearing him preach. We had come full circle from that faithful Sunday in May of 1982… Rest Well My Dear Friend Brother/Elder/Dr. Thomas Williams I shall surely miss you, our "chats" and your place in my life, I already do...

The Word of God God’s Design by Elder Thomas Williams, PhD “Therefore shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). God became a father after he “formed man [Adam] of the dust of the ground, and breath into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul” (Genesis 2:7). As the apostle Paul notes, “The first Adam was made a living soul: the last Adam was made a quickening spirit” (1 st Corinthians 15:45). Adam was the [first earthly] son of God (Luke 3:38): he was created by God with the ability to think and reason. As Adam’ father, God gave him a home, a job, and all the fruit that he could eat, with the exception of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:15-17). Unlike the animals, Adam did not have a companion, so God created a help meet suitable for him (Genesis 2:20). God gave Adam a Woman, a wife, who helped him to be fruitful, to multiply, and to replenish the earth (Genesis 1:28). What am I saying? I am saying that God is the architectect of marriage and the family, not man! I AM THAT I AM (Exodus 3:14) used them to give birth to three sons and to an untold number of children (Genesis 5:4). God designed marriage for a man and a woman, not for a-man-and-a-man or a-woman-and-a-woman. In the Bible, whenever a man got married, he married a woman and raised a family (had children with his wife). For instance, Abraham married Sarah (Genesis 11:29), Isaac married Rebekah (Genesis 25:20), whereas Jacob married Leah (Genesis 29:21-27) and Rachel (Genesis 29:28-31). After Sarah died, Abraham married Keturah (Genesis 25:1-2). Judah married Shuah (Genesis 38:1-2), Moses married Zipporah (Exodus 2:21), whereas on Saturday, May 31, 1958, my late father married his bride (my precious mother). The Bible says, “He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the Lord” (Proverbs 18:22, English Standard Version). For people who are in Christ (2nd Corinthians 5:17), God has blessed us to not only have a natural family but also a spiritual family as indicated by the following scriptures:  “Do well unto all men, especially to those who are of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10);  “(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall be take care of the church of God?)” (1st Timothy 3:5)  “But if any provide not for his own and especially for those of his own house” (1 st Timothy 5:8); and  “For the time has come that judgment must begin at the house of God” (1 st Peter 4:17). God designed marriage and the family but all marriages, however, were/are not made in heaven. The following is a partial list of marriages not made in heaven: Continued on page 15

Who Can Satisfy the Hunger that Exist Deep Within by J. Quest When you read the holy-scriptures do you take the time to really think about the many names mentioned of those who were instrumental in the success of more prominent, more easily recognizable, bible characters? For example, the Apostle Paul has recorded a wonderful list of people in Romans 16th chapter. I would imagine that many of us don’t pay much attention to these ‘random’ names, most of which we probably have a hard time pronouncing. But if we simply overlook them is it fair to those who are being referenced? If we’re students of the bible, we’re most likely pretty familiar with names such as Jesus, Peter, John, Paul, Stephen, Timothy and Titus. But how many of us are familiar with names such as Epaenetus, Andronicus, Junia, Amplias, Urbane, Stachys or Apelles? Do you even realize those names are a part of your New Testament? The Apostle Paul goes to great lengths to declare his personal expressions of love and greetings to these mostly unknown (to us) saints. You may find it worthwhile to dust off your bible dictionary or commentary to find out who these folks were and what role they played in helping to promulgate the glorious gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Since we’re speaking about non-descript names, do you ever remember reading about Demas? His name is only mentioned 3 times in the New Testament. In Colossians 4:14 we read, “”Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas, greet you.” We may read the following words in Philemon 22-25, “But withal prepare me also a lodging: for I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you. There salute thee Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus; Marcus, Aristarchus, Demas, Lucas, my fellow laborers. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.” But sadly when we read the third instance of his name being mentioned, it is sad and curiously disheartening. We read in 2 Timothy 4:9, 10, “Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: for Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry.” Paul wrote his epistle to the church in Colosse in A.D. 60. Correspondingly, he also wrote his epistle to Philemon in A.D. 60. Lastly, history tells us that he (Paul) penned his second epistle to his dearly beloved son in the gospel, Timothy, in A.D. 67. What possibly could have transpired in a short 7 year period to cause Demas to go back into the world after he had been made free by the name and blood of Jesus Christ? Unfortunately, we don’t know what caused Demas to forsake the Apostle Paul and more importantly, the work of God. Fortunately, we don’t have to search too far to discover our answer…for we are told that Demas forsook Paul because “he loved this present world…” and as a result he departed and forsook the work of the Lord. Why do you think an enlightened person would love this present world? As you may remember, the Apostle John told us in 1 John 2:15-17 to, Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever. The Greek word used in the original language for ‘world’ in 1 John 2:15 is kosmos. Kosmos denotes the orderly arrangement, i.e. decoration; by implication, the world (in a wide or narrow sense, including its inhabitants); or its adorning. Our great God has warned us to not become enamored with the trappings of this present world. Let’s not forget the reason why Jesus came to save our souls and why He decided to leave us here on planet Earth. We should be eager to grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We are commanded to also be filled with the (Continued on page 17) “Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.” Romans 11:5 Page 11 of 28

Stress Management and the Holidays The Holidays can be a very joyous time to spend with family, friends, and loved ones. It is a time for reflection and a time to renew your faith in God, for it is the true spirit of the holidays. While the season can bring great joy and happiness there are many who also experience lots of stress. This could be because of personal, professional, or spiritual circumstances or it could be just the overwhelming feeling that comes from the busy season. For whatever the reason, there are several things you can do to feel better. First and most important, you should try to identify the source of your stress. This can help you to find the best solutions. For the simpler issues such as family gatherings:  Ask your family members to bring a dish so that it will reduce the amount of cooking you will need to do.  Shop early so that you don’t get caught up with the busy season  Find different ways of helping out the less fortunate, ex: contributing to your local food pantry, volunteering your time to serve holiday dinner at one of the local churches or shelters  Inviting an individual or family that would otherwise not have someone to spend their holidays with  Make sure to spend wisely. Overspending now can lead to added stress tomorrow. For mental and emotional health:  Always leave time for yourself. Take the time to meditate, pray, or rest to reduce some of the stress.  Make plans so that you are not caught for the season unprepared.  Try to meet expectations by informing others of your plans early so that there are no conflicts.  Set priorities so that you can best enjoy your time.  Cherish your family members and let them know how much they mean to you. An act of kindness or some friendly words can help in great ways.  Reflect on the spiritual meaning of the holidays.  Exercise and try to include healthy options in your meal choices.  Walking, jogging, sports, and other leisure activities can help relax you and reduce some of the stress.  Stay away from debates, confrontations, and other anxiety provoking activities.  Appreciate what you have, plan for the future, and always remember to include others in your prayers for when we think there are obstacles and challenges for us, we will find that others may have heavier burdens to face and conquer.  Speak to a mental health provider, social workers, or counselor if you find that you are unable to deal with your stress on your own. Help is always available and important to get if you really need it. HAVE A HAPPY HOLIDAY. MAY ALL OF YOU BE BLESSED WITH GOOD PHYSICAL, MENTAL, EMOTIONAL AND SPIRITUAL HEALTH. MAY 2017 BRING ONLY GOOD THINGS AND MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR SELF-IMPROVEMENT AND UNITY. Stay tuned for future events and health information made available through the Institute of Education for the Care of Chronic Diseases.

God’s Design by Elder Thomas Williams, PhD (Continued from page 9)

     

       

Same-sex marriages and same-sex unions A man who divorces his wife and marries another woman (Mark 10:11; Luke 16:18a) A man who marries a woman who was divorced by her husband (Matthew 5:32b; Luke 16:18b) A woman who divorces her husband and marries another man (Mark 10:12) So-called common law marriages A man who marries his brother’s wife (Leviticus 20:21 as noted in Matthew 14:3-5; Mark 6:18) A man who marries a woman and her mother (Leviticus 20:14) A priest who marries a woman who was divorced (Ezekiel 44:22) A priest who marries a prostitute (Leviticus 21:14) A priest who marries a profane woman (Leviticus 21:14) A priest who marries a widow (Leviticus 21:14; Ezekiel 44:22) Being unequally yoked (married) to an unbeliever (2nd Corinthians 6:14) A man who marries his sister (Leviticus 20:17) A child who marries his or her parent (see Leviticus chapter 18)

I know that marriage equity is the law of the land in the United States and in some parts of the world and thus same-sex couples can get married under the color of law, if they so desire. Same-sex marriage (“marriage equity”) came out of the heart and soul of the devil himself and so-called same-sex marriage is a sin. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). God will reward us for whatever we do! No matter what a judicial system says God’s design for marriage has not changed one iota. I would be remiss if I did not say this: God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16) and at no time did He ever authorize or sanction divorce (Matthew 19:8; Mark 10:5-9). I pray that the Self-existing Eternal God help the human family follow His plan for marriage.

About The Author: Now deceased, Elder Thomas Williams was a licensed and ordain minister and a servant of the Most High God (Genesis 14:20). His going home service was in his home state of New Jersey, on November 11, 2016.

Blest Be the Tie That Binds Author: John Fawcett (1782) A dedication to the Late Elder Thomas Williams, PhD See related story by Mary Coleman and the history behind the hymn on page 21.

Blest be the tie that binds Our hearts in Christian love; The fellowship of kindred minds Is like to that above. Before our Father’s throne We pour our ardent prayers; Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one Our comforts and our cares. We share each other’s woes, Our mutual burdens bear; And often for each other flows The sympathizing tear. When we asunder part, It gives us inward pain; But we shall still be joined in heart, And hope to meet again. This glorious hope revives Our courage by the way; While each in expectation lives, And longs to see the day. From sorrow, toil and pain, And sin, we shall be free, And perfect love and friendship reign Through all eternity.

Think of A Friend Do something special for someone who would least expect the attention. Give a care package to a stranger or someone who you don’t like or leave a note and treats for the postal worker. Think about it I’ll bet you come up with the perfect person to show a little extra unexpected love and attention this Christmas. Paint the snow No snow fort is complete without a coat of paint. Now I don’t mean literal paint, but you can make snow paint by adding a few drops of food coloring to a spray bottle full of water. Spray it on snow to turn it blue, green, red or whatever color your children desire! Too bad we didn’t think of this when we were kids… what am I thinking it’s never too late… Take a Christmas light drive December tends to transform even the blandest neighborhood into a winter wonderland. Pack your family or your friends or just go solo into the car, turn on the heater, and check out your community’s most spectacular light displays. Host a holiday movie night If there’s one thing I love about December, it’s being able to snuggle up on the couch with a good old-fashioned Christmas special. All of your favorite Christmas movies are bound to show up on TV at some point during this month. Pile on the blankets and serve up some simple snacks. This is a great way to get the whole family in the Christmas spirit.

Who Can Satisfy the Hunger that Exist Deep Within by J. Quest (Continued from page 11) Holy Ghost (John 3:5), the Spirit of God. He empowers us to live a life that’s pleasing to the only God. Our primary mission is to lovingly witness to dying men and women…most of whom have not been privileged to learn about what our glorious Savior has done for them through His redemptive work. Lest you think I’m speaking about ‘barbarians’ living in a tropical jungle or wandering ‘nomads’ enduring simple lives in the hot, arid deserts of the world let’s bring this conversation a little closer to home. Here are some thought provoking questions: Are your family members, neighbors or co-workers all saved from their sins? If the answer to this question is a resounding ‘No’ then there yet remains much work to do for the kingdom of Jesus Christ on this side of eternity! What in this life could possibly be more glorious, gratifying or fulfilling than a vibrant, growing and healthy relationship with God Almighty, Jesus Christ? Is it possible that we might be so shallow as to think that a man, woman, career, fame, or fortune might fill the void in us that only our Lord Jesus can properly, and more than adequately, fill? Jesus fills the heavens and the earth and yet has decided to live within us. What a great and indescribable privilege and honor God has allowed us to enjoy! What, in this life, is more valuable than your soul? What shall a man, or woman, give in exchange for his or her soul? The temporary pleasures and excitement that seems to exist in this world should not, must not, and cannot compare to the matchless, complete and excellent reality of Who Jesus Christ is! He freely gave Himself for us; what are we willing to do to show our gratitude to Him? Lest the tempter whisper in our ears for us to “Look over there…at that shiny object!” let’s continue to remain devoted and committed to the only God there is! He alone can satisfy the hunger that exists deep within our very being. Jesus alone is worthy of all the praise, glory and honor! He alone was able to pay the incomprehensible price that our sins against a holy God required and to further purchase our liberty by the gift of Himself on Calvary’s cross. We’re thankful that He didn’t stay in the borrowed grave but was raised on the 3rd day by the glory of the Father with all power in His hands to live forevermore! Hallelujah! We thank Him for His mercy, love and grace! Demas hath forsaken us for this present world. Are the 70, 80 or 90 years that we might possibly expect to live on this earth worth comparing to a never ending eternity that we are planning to spend in God’s presence worshiping His great name? The answer to this question is up to you. It’s your choice, how will you choose? Choose wisely! Be blessed!

A Message from Uma Glow

www.umaglow.com

Hello Remnant Magazine friends! I’d like to introduce myself. I am the owner and CEO of Uma Glow, LLC which is a division of UMA Enterprises, LLC. My slogan is “Let Me Help You LOVE You” by taking care of yourself from the outside in. It is a commandment to honor the vessel that God has given so you can be the best for your family, friends and anyone else that needs you. We are all exposed to chemicals every day through our environment, but we have a choice in what we put into and on our bodies. I encourage everyone to choose a healthy diet with less processed foods. Think about what you last ate. How close was that meal to its natural state? The further away you get from the natural (loaded with ingredients that you can barely pronounce), the closer you get to living less of a quality of life in the future. The same goes for the products you use every day that are applied to your skin and hair. But the good news is you can make the choice to love yourself as God would have you to do! Let’s start with the wonderful products that my business produces. My products are manufactured with certified organic ingredients, fair trade ingredients and essential oils. Sports Kareem Nets the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Lamar Battle President Barack Obama capped off a history making and productive presidency by acknowledging a truly great American. Abdul-Jabbar joined 20 others in receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is in this scribes opinion the greatest NBA player to ever lace up a pair of sneakers. Kareem is currently the NBA's all time leading scorer (38,387) a record that may never be eclipsed (especially considering that Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant both failed to catch him). Kareem is a three time NCAA champion, six time NBA champion, six time NBA MVP, 19 time NBA All Star, 10 time All NBA first team, NBA Rookie Of the Year and a 5 time All defensive first team recipient This quote from Hall Of Fame guard Isaiah Thomas speaks volumes, "If they say numbers don't lie, then Kareem is the greatest to ever play the game". From Hall of Famer Julius Erving, “In terms of players all time, Kareem is still the number one guy. He is the guy you gotta start your franchise with". There have been bright stars throughout the NBA's history, players who were incredible athletes with charisma and star power to boot but when considering that which makes a player the greatest you have to be able to tell the difference between the white hot intensity of a passing comet or the year in and year out consistency of the sun itself. President Obama mentioned during his tribute and I am paraphrasing that Kareem Abdul Jabbar was so dominant in college that the NCAA actually outlawed the slam dunk. However considering all of his athletic accolades (and they are too numerous to mention) Those achievements may pale in comparison to his efforts as a bestselling writer, actor, producer and cultural critic. Kareem is a frequent commentator on race and human rights as a contributor to Time Magazine, The Huffington Post, Meet the Press and CNN. In 2012 Kareem was named United States cultural ambassador by then U.S. Secretary Of State Hillary Clinton. Kareem has spoken out on issues of fairness and decency that impact the lives of under-served communities he has also worked tirelessly to challenge negative images of Muslims in America and around the world. The majority of his books promote themes that empower and educate people worldwide about the significant contributions of African Americans in all walks of life. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is indeed a worthy honor and acknowledgment for the contributions of this great American who seems to be just hitting his stride.

When God Sends A Kindred Spirit by Mary Coleman Blest Be the Tie That Binds dedicated to My Brother in Christ, Elder Thomas Williams. But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state. For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state. For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's. Philippians 2:19-21 Blest Be the Tie That Binds a hymn written by a Baptist Pastor as an expression of the love he and his wife shared for their congregation. When I read the lyrics of this hymn I was somewhat sadden because I was reminded of the genuine Godly type of love, compassion, integrity and trust that is missing from so many of our Churches and leadership today. So many souls wounded and led astray by wolves in sheep clothing. Too often we befriend people or get involved because we have a preconceived expected outcome or we become disengaged because that thing or person that motivated us is no longer accessible to us. Too often we find ourselves guilty of being misguided by deceptive motivates. When I think of Elder Thomas Williams I am encouraged and my memory of him gives life to the hymn. You see Elder Williams was a kindred spirit a true man of God who feared and loved God more than life. As depicted on the front cover, Dr. Williams will be remembered as a man surrounded by a cloud of Godly attributes. A man of strength not afraid to stand up for or speak out on Godly principles as noted in his article God’s Design on page 9. I never met Elder Williams except through our phone conversations and it seems we were closer than many folks who live under the same roof. I became acquainted with him around the first of the year when he started writing for the Remnant Magazine. He and Elder Neil Woodard were friends and we all would sometimes fellowship with other friends by way of conference calls for prayer, sometimes bible study and/or discussions about the magazine. After Neil passed away in April, I was feeling abandoned and unsure about the future of this magazine; Dr. Williams stepped up and offered to help keep the magazine going. I believe God sent him, a man of like-mindedness. Dr. Williams was a very humble man. He made a commitment and he never wavered knowing that there would be no earthly compensation for his labor. I recall this summer when he was doing a lot of traveling and said he might not have internet access so he made sure he supplied me with articles to cover a 2 month period for publication. For six months we talked nearly every day and I realize I really don’t know much about his life. I know he was a veteran and he authored a couple books. He was a teacher and was also working on a manuscript and he would sometimes quote himself in some of the articles he wrote for the magazine. I ask myself what did we talk about and I recall in his final days he talked a lot about the children in the school system and how some of them are lost and how much he wanted to do something to help turn their souls to Christ. He cared so much for every soul to the point I believe I could feel the sorrow he felt. I guess that is why the hymn Blest Be the Tie That Binds has so much meaning: Blest be the tie that binds Our hearts in Christian love; The fellowship of kindred minds Is like to that above.

Before our Father’s throne We pour our ardent prayers; Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one Our comforts and our cares.

We share each other’s woes, Our mutual burdens bear; And often for each other flows The sympathizing tear…

The hymn begins by stating that the body of Christ is bound together by love. The second and third stanzas of the hymn elaborate on the idea of suffering and rejoicing together and the hymn concludes with the hope that this unity will not be permanently broken by death or parting. Oh what hope, the fellowship of kindred minds whose hearts are bound together in Christian love. Blest be the tie when God sends a kindred spirit. Dr. Williams will be remembered as a man who chose a good name rather than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold (Proverbs 22:1). (Work the puzzle A Good Name on page 6.) See the rest of the hymn lyrics on page 15 and/or visit the Sermon Writer at https://www.sermonwriter.com/hymnstories/blest-tie-binds to learn more about the hymn. “Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.” Romans 11:5 Page 21 of 28

Youth A Memorable Thanksgiving (A Creative Writing) by Jujuan Johnson Part I The most memorable Thanksgiving I ever had? Now, if my memory proves reliable, I would have to say the November days I spent in Virginia of eighteen sixty-three. And in those days, were spent with the craziest men I have ever had the honor of knowing, men of the hundredth and fifty-second New York Volunteer Infantry, Company D. The specific men that come to mind were my old mess mates. Our chosen cook was named either John or Jack, if it was not for my memory, his name would be certain. For the sake of this story, his name shall be John. John was a hell of a cook, he was also the likeness of that one housewife that would physically beat their husband away from the kitchen, as to preserve the state of the kitchen and the food before supper time. There was Anderson, he joined up in mid eighteen sixty-three, and gave his life during the Siege of Petersburg the following year. If ever there was a man willing to help another, it was Anderson. And finally, Eddie Bison. He got the name “Bison” from the men he hung around the most in Company D. He always talked about his days out west, hunting buffalo and bison for a hunting lodge. To this day, I can still hear old Eddie rambling on. “And then I had to drag the big boy through the mountains and on through the woods”. My only response to his stories was “Sure you did, Ed. Sure you did”. Those men were my family through most of the war, and only God knows their place in the world and the great beyond.

Part II Not too long before my most memorable Thanksgiving in eighteen sixty-three, Mr. Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving to be an official national holiday. On the twenty-sixth of November, Mr. Lincoln’s finest, belonging to Company D of the hundredth and fifty-second New York Volunteer Infantry, really came through. For me, it all started when a few of our best shooters called for John. It was urgent, they said. And within the hour, the entire camp smelled of home cooked Thanksgiving supper. Eddie Bison, Anderson, me, and apparently the rest of Company D then proceeded to find the source of this sensational sense. Of course, everyone including myself headed straight for the Company Kitchen. Lo and behold, a huge blaze was before us! And there, laid out on long tables, platters of beautifully roasted turkey, with a golden crisp. What looked like local grown vegetable, chicken, and of course, the biggest highlight that was in everyone’s eyes, except mine of course, was the barrels of beer and whiskey. These liberties were limited to each man, given the amount of food and drink was available to the Company. I thank God for those men of the hundredth and fifty-second who made this possible for us. That dinner brought me closer to home. One more reason why this Thanksgiving was so memorable has to do with the days that followed, during the Mine Run Campaign. That campaign was a failed attempt to break the rebs. The second Corps was set to attack the rebel line after the skirmish at Payne’s Farm, the day after Thanksgiving. Then, our Corps commander, Warren if the memory proves, talked our beloved General Meade out of the attack. Which ended our fight for the year of eighteen sixty-three. Thank God for that.

Jesus came that we might have life according to John 10:10, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” Matthew 11:28-29 tells us “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. “ In Galatians 5:22-23 we learn, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

In 2017 we are looking forward to life in a more abundant way as we take on more of Jesus Christ…
