EDITOR’S
(NOTES)
God Is Up To Something by Mary Coleman Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Jeremiah 1:5 In Jeremiah 29:11 it is recorded, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” In the Book of Isaiah 55:8-9 it is written, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord, For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”Isaiah 43:2 records, “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.” In last month’s editor’s notes I wrote, “As Co-Founder and Co-Editor I fervently thank all of our readers and supporters. I offer special thanks to those who contribute to help keep the legacy of this magazine alive….” This month I am writing as the Chief Editor more determined, more thankful, and more fired up looking foward to that expected end because Jesus came that we might have life and have that life more abundantly. In this issue we say goodbye in a celebratory way to our co-editor and contributing writer, Elder Dr. Thomas Williams (See page 27 to read more about how we plan to recognize and honor him in our next issue). We also celebrate the gift of life with Susan Woodard Williams (to our knowledge, no relations to Thomas Williams), the Mother of our late Editor in Chief, Elder Neil Woodard. When I look back over the life events and seasons of 2016 I see God all up in every facet of our existence. All signs point to a season where all hands should be on deck working and using our gifts in service for the Lord. We are to be about our Father’s business! “…seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and ALL these things SHALL be added unto you.”(Matthew 6:33) “And the Lord shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the Lord thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them:” (Deuteronomy 28:13) This my people is my expected end and it is no secret when I say God is up to something. We have His Word and that blessed assurance that He will do what He said He will do. “For God is NOT a man that He should lie…” Numbers 23:19

90th Birthday Celebration for Susan A. Williams, mother of our late Editor and Chief, Neil Woodard. Picture below are many musician friends of the late Neil Woodard (His Incredible Friends) who participated in the birthday celebration for Neil’s Mother. 90th Birthday Celebration by Lori-Ann Woodard Susan Ann Williams is the mother of Neil Woodard and myself (LoriAnn Woodard) and she celebrated her 90th birthday on All Saints Day November 1st. She always jokes how happy she was not born the day before (Halloween). Yeah our mom has such a great sense of humor! Ann when she laughs, it doesn't matter if you heard what she said - you want to laugh because the heartiness of her laugh causes you to automatically laugh. If you didn't know it by now, music runs in the veins of our family. Neil was a big musician with a passion for playing the keyboards and congas; My sister Karen and I are singers; My brother Gregory plays the Djembe who was taught how to play by our late eldest brother who was an expert in multiple African percussion instruments. Mom is a singer who received voice lessons in Opera as a young girl. In her early days, her and her friends sang duets in places that were previously only for white entertainers. All of this happened before she became a mother of 5. Nevertheless, she is still to this day a passionate singer filling her days with melodies. Although she is now blind and requires assistance to be led around, she does her daily walking exercise after dinner around the house. As she walks she sings her favorite gospel songs. If you ever visit the house, even if she is meeting you for the first time she will sing you a song! My mother's mom was also a singer and played multiple instruments such as the piano and trumpet. So the passion for music runs through our veins!
Lori-Ann, Gregory and their Mother Susan Williams
On November 5th we celebrated mom's 90th birthday and this was also a Memorial for Neil. So many of Neil's Incredible Friends showed up along with family and mom's long time church friends. I want to give shout outs to Erik Plaza (sax) who coordinated most of the of the musicians that came such as James Fleet (talented at multiple instruments such as the flute, sax and keyboards), Lah Woods (sax), Laurie West (singer), Penny Dossett (singer), GiGi Vaughan (the Congas), Vinny Vollano (bass), our cousin Herb Lewis (sax), Oscar Maxwell (keyboards), Phil Cariglo (drums), Patricia Symonds Powell (singer), Jay Thomas (violin), Gregory Woodard (Djembe), and myself (singer).I hope I didn't miss anyone because all of them are so near and dear to my heart. We all played and sang "We Are Family" together. The love that we shared was so heartfelt and to think that none of us would ever have known each other if it wasn't for mom giving birth to her children (Yes my late Dad obviously had a big part in that too! That's another story I'd love to tell in the near future). So join me in celebrating the life of my mom while she is in the land of the living with all of us. Let her life be an example of how you can pass on your passion to the next generation and that passion can have an effect beyond your own comprehension. So spread your love, spread your gift, spread your passion and don't stop giving. You never know how many people will be blessed by you in this generation and the generations to come!

The Word of God A Mother's Love by Shelby Mallory-Price “Her children arise and call her blessed, her husband also and he praises her, many women do noble things but she surpasses them all. Honor her for all that her hands have done and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.” Proverbs 31-28-29 and 31-31 When I look back over my life at 60 years old there are many things I am thankful to God for but probably the one thing that sticks out in my mind is the fact that I was given as a gift from God a wonderful God fearing mother who loved her children unconditionally. When I look around now I know any woman can give birth but it takes a special person that only God created to be called a mother. I have heard it often said “well mothers did not come with a handbook telling them how to be a mother” but, I disagree. The handbook is called the bible and if we would heed to this book perhaps people would treat each other in a more loving and caring way. My mother was not only a mother to one child, but to 7 children; and I do not know without the help of the Lord how she raised all of us, especially when my father decided he no longer wanted to be part of our family. Nevertheless, my mother not complaining once stepped in and became both father and mother to us. Through our childhood mama as we call her taught us how to say yes ma’am and no ma’am, please and thank you. She taught us to honor our elders, to love our neighbor as ourselves. She taught us how to cook and clean. One of the most important things she taught us to love God with all of your heart and soul to honor his commandments and to look to him, not man in the time of trouble. Not only did she teach these things to us but she was a living example taking all 7 of us to church on Sundays. There were so many of us we took up a whole pew. Mama did not spare the rod she did not have to say a word if you were misbehaving, all she had to do was give you that look and you knew there would be consequences if you did not stop acting up. Through all of this we knew that mama loved us. Mama showed and told us daily how much she loved us as she made sure we had our hair combed daily, clean clothes, a daily bath and three home cooked meals everyday even after she took a job outside our home. Mama taught us strong work values and the importance of a good education. She stressed that getting a good education would take you places and it was something that you achieved that no one could ever take away from you. One of my fondest memories of mama is finding her in the bathroom on her hands and knees with an old scrub board washing our clothes by hand in the bathtub and hanging them on the clothes line to dry. Because of her love she often worked from sun up until sun down, never complaining. Yes like most children there were times when I would get so angry at my mama because she asked or told me to do something that I did not agree with. Nevertheless, trust me there will come a time in your life when you will go back to your mother and thank her for saying no or not allowing you to do something that she knew was not the best thing for you. If you are blessed as I am, you will be lucky enough to have the love of more than one mother. I call my mother's twin sister mama as well. She never had children of her own but she loved her sister's children like they were her own. Even though she and her husband lived in New York she would buy clothes for us during the year and give my mama money to help her take care of all 7 of us. Now that she and her husband have retired and moved to Virginia our back doors face each other and her love for me continues. She calls daily to see if we are ok and if we need anything and if she sees anything strange going in the neighborhood she will quickly call to make sure we are ok. Continued on page 15

Selah by J. Quest Have you taken the time lately to just say to God, Thank You!? So often we become engrossed in the issues of life and regrettably don’t take a ‘Selah’ moment to slow down enough to recognize how blessed and fortunate we are and to bask in the glory of God. As you know, the Hebrew word ‘Selah’ means to slow down and reflect or meditate on the words that were just spoken. The pressures of life, if we’re not careful, may cause us to run, run, run and then try to run even faster the next time to cram even more stuff into our lives! Life is meant to be enjoyed! We shouldn’t only focus on the destination we may just need to learn how to slow down and enjoy the journey. Simply enjoy the fragrance of freshly cut flowers, take a moment to wonder at a beautiful sunrise or sunset, or just enjoy that meaningful second cup of coffee with a cherished friend. Make the most of the time you have to live while on earth because, as you know, tomorrow is promised to no one! Perhaps it may be the perfect time to become reacquainted with that old friend who you’ve lost contact with. Take a different route home on your commute this week and simply enjoy the scenery. This is a pretty amazing country but we can easily discount it if we don’t ‘press the brakes’ and drink in some of its beauty. If you really think about it, beauty can be found just about anywhere. Sadly, we often rush from point A to point B and miss the “little things” in life that can bring us so much joy, excitement and fulfillment. When we recognize the goodness, mercy and grace that the Lord has bestowed upon us it’s just mind blowing to consider the intense love He has for His people. We ought to bow in reverent awe at the majesty of God; He truly is altogether lovely! In fact, the psalmist declares in Psalm 19 that the heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shews His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night shews knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. God speaks volumes to us through the wonder of His creation. His intent is for us to recognize that if there is a creation…then it follows that there must also be a Creator. And what an awesome Creator He is! If we ponder, in amazement, about the intricate design and care of the universe…then it follows that there must be a Designer! God’s creation shouts that we should seek to intimately know the Lover of our soul, Jesus Christ. Indeed He has made all things and without Him was there nothing made that was made. There was no price too great for God to pay for mankind! Just to demonstrate His awesome love for us, Jesus gave His life as the atoning Sacrifice for us while we were yet in our sins, estranged from the covenant and commonwealth of God. You can’t help but get excited when you read the Scripture in Romans 5 that says, For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commended His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. The Lord has a definite plan for us to successfully approach Him. He knows His ‘address’ and will gladly share it with all who desire to know Him. His ultimate desire is for us to abide in true fellowship and worship of Him throughout eternity. He’s prepared a place for us. We’re told that eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it entered into the thoughts of man the things that God has prepared for them who love Him… But He has revealed unto us those things by His Spirit, for the Spirit (of God) searches all things, yeah even the deep things of God. Heaven, don’t you want to go? Furthermore, don’t you want to praise and worship God in the beauty of holiness? He has fulfilled all necessary requirements for us to be able to see His face in peace. Health The N.E.I.L. Health Chat© is inspired by our dear friend, Neil Woodard. His desire to keep people connected, provide education, inspire, and lead people in a spiritual, healthful, and thought provoking journey is the premise for this column. This article will provide Dr. Betty’s health perspectives as well as stories, articles, reviews, special notices, and inspirational messages from others interested in bettering their health and the health of others. Join us each month for what we will call the “NEIL” experience. About Dr. Betty
Dr. Betty has more than 20 years of experience in health education and health management. She is a Masters Certified Health Education Specialist and has a doctoral degree in Health and Behavior Studies from Teachers College, Columbia University, where she has received several awards including the Distinguished Alumni-Early Career Award for her contributions to the health field. Dr. Betty has worked in government, hospitals, community organizations, and academic settings, providing health education and leadership to individuals and large groups from diverse backgrounds. She is a college professor and the Founding President and CEO of the Institute of Education for the Care of Chronic Diseases. This organization provides health education and information to communities, organizations, and healthcare providers, working with other professionals to spread special health messages that can help change health policies that affect us all.
Participatory Healthcare: The Wave of Future in Healthcare Delivery On October 21, 2016, students, faculty, and healthcare professionals came together in New York City to discuss best practices for delivering healthcare to diverse patients and families. Presenters from various healthcare agencies spoke about health literacy, health policy, environmental health, community health worker initiatives, and the inclusion of health education into healthcare practices. These concepts are central to the premise of participatory healthcare practices. Participatory healthcare is based on the premise that healthcare professionals work closely with their patients to make them active participants in their own healthcare. Professionals work together to reduce medical errors, increase patient safety, and improve patient experiences and satisfaction. The Affordable Care Act, The Joint Commission, and the National Academy of Medicine have made patient and familycentered environments the wave of the future. In order to improve overall health outcomes, patients must be able to play an active role in making health-related decisions. That means having access to information, knowing and understanding their diagnosis, and knowing what treatment options they have. It means understanding how and when to take their medications, how and when to seek medical attention, and how and when to seek second opinions if they are dissatisfied with their current healthcare providers. Empowering patients through information and education helps to engage patients and family members and decreases the need for readmissions for health conditions/illnesses. It provides individuals with sustainable skills (meaning skills they can handle on their own). It provides individuals with the confidence to ask questions and to research healthcare options on their own. It provides individuals with the opportunity to learn the strategies to improve their lifestyles. It reduces healthcare expenses as communities can use health lifestyle tools to focus on prevention rather than seeking assistance once they become ill.
STAY INFORMED, BECOME PART OF YOUR HEALTHCARE TEAM, DEMAND GOOD COMMUNICATION FROM YOUR PROVIDER. THE MORE ENGAGED YOU ARE AS PATIENTS/FAMILIES, THE EASIER IT WILL BE TO NAVIGATE THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM AND TO OBTAIN THE RESULTS YOU NEED. Stay tuned for future events and health information that will be available through the Institute of Education for the Care of Chronic Diseases. “Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.” Romans 11:5 Page 13 of 28

A Mother's Love by Shelby Mallory-Price (Continued from page 9) My third mother is my mother-in-law but I have never called her my mother-in-law and she has never called me her daughter-in-law. She has always been mama and I have always been her daughter. Mama now resides in heaven. A few days before she passed away she called me to her room. She wanted me to get her a new dress. I was so excited because I thought oh good mama is feeling better and wants to go to church. She quickly let me know that she wanted me to get her a new dress to be buried in and I honored her wishes and found a beautiful dress for her. A few days after that she called me to her room and asked me if I saw the man dressed in white that would come and stand at the foot of her bed, I told her mama I do not see him but who do you think it is and she let me know without batting an eyelash it was God coming to take her home. I told her mama I think you are right it is God and he is waiting for you, she then called all of her children into the room and in her last hours she told us that even though she would be leaving us she wanted her love for us to continue and for us to continue to love and take care of each other in her absence. Her legacy of love continues with her son who is my husband. He is a wonderful God fearing man who loves me and our children and sacrifices everyday to take care of his family. I had surgery recently and he has been a Godsend, cooking, cleaning and taking care of me as though I was a baby and never has he complained.
prayer mentioned keywords such as forgiveness, kindness, honesty, happiness always giving your best, key things that mothers should teach their children in the love they have for themselves and others. Marion C. Garretty states that “a mother's love is the fuel that enables a normal human being to do the impossible." A mother's love is something that is not temporary, it last a lifetime and is passed from generation to generation. After all she is created by God himself. In my last though, I will leave with you, Isaiah 66:13, “As a mother comforts her child so will I comfort you.”

My husband and I have 3 children of our own that I love dearly. My husband will often remind me when I go to give my opinion on something that the children have said, done or getting ready to do and he lets me know that they are grown now but I quickly remind him children are a gift given to us from God and he has entrusted me to take care of them no matter how old they get and through a mother’s love I have to not only teach but show them right from wrong. I hope that my legacy will be that I tried through my love for them to be the best mother I could. I have had some wonderful role models who have had the best teacher of all and that person was God. I have seen a quote that said, “God could not be everywhere so he made mothers." For a mother’s love to exist she must know God. A mother's love for her children and family are unconditional. There is nothing she will not do for them; forsaking self to make sure her children are taken care of, exactly as our Father in heaven watches over each of us every single day. Selah by J. Quest (Continued from page 11) Just think, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us? As one character says in the movie, The Godfather, ‘He made me an offer I can’t refuse.’ To know that we may have eternal life through Jesus Christ is great news! Also, to know with assurance that we may be saved from our sins and to be adopted into the family of believers ought to make us all leap for joy! To be made FREE and to be given the POWER to live a life pleasing to God is a better reality than any Hollywood screenwriter could envision or write. The dilemma for humans is that we often don’t like to think of ourselves as sinners who need to be redeemed. We often wrongly see ourselves as ‘having already arrived’ and need nothing else in order to be made acceptable in the eyes of God Almighty. I’d rather believe His report about my spiritual condition than the words of a thousand so called resident experts. I have finally arrived at the conclusion that God is too great and eternity is too long for me to miss seeing His face in peace. No excuse is acceptable…we must see His face in peace. Are you ready to meet your Maker? The Lord has made a way for us all to be accepted in the beloved; accepted into the family of God. The Spirit and the bride (the church) say, Come! Let him who is athirst come to the fountain of living waters. Only Jesus Christ is able to revive our souls and quench the spiritual hunger and thirst that’s inherent in all human beings. Jesus bids us to come and drink of the water of life freely. Nothing else will satisfy! Let Him fill that void and yearning in your soul. He alone is worthy! He alone can meet your needs!! He’s waiting for you to move toward Him…! Be blessed!

A Message from Uma Glow
www.umaglow.com
Hello Remnant Magazine friends! I’d like to introduce myself. I am the owner and CEO of Uma Glow, LLC which is a division of UMA Enterprises, LLC. My slogan is “Let Me Help You LOVE You” by taking care of yourself from the outside in. It is a commandment to honor the vessel that God has given so you can be the best for your family, friends and anyone else that needs you. We are all exposed to chemicals every day through our environment, but we have a choice in what we put into and on our bodies. I encourage everyone to choose a healthy diet with less processed foods. Think about what you last ate. How close was that meal to its natural state? The further away you get from the natural (loaded with ingredients that you can barely pronounce), the closer you get to living less of a quality of life in the future. The same goes for the products you use every day that are applied to your skin and hair. But the good news is you can make the choice to love yourself as God would have you to do! Let’s start with the wonderful products that my business produces. My products are manufactured with certified organic ingredients, fair trade ingredients and essential oils. We do not use any chemicals, fillers or toxic materials. I’ve researched each ingredient used in my products which can be reviewed at your leisure on my website www.umaglow.com. So let me help you love you by using my wonderful products made with love!

Youth Facing Your Fears by Hollis Jones Take time in your life to break your fears. You can really enjoy life if your fears don't hinder you. Fear is unavoidable, but what is critical is how one reacts to fear. What most people don't realize is that oftentimes the best approach is just throw yourself into the fray. Recently I confronted my fear of heights; I attended a trust-building ropes course. A friend and I were suspended 50 feet into the air, balancing ourselves on something not unlike tightropes, all while holding cameras to record other people. I was beyond frightened, but I learned that it wasn't as terrible as I thought it was going to be, especially when you have a friend involved. In fact, I actually found myself enjoying it. I always try to remember that things I am afraid of are probably not as scary as I make it seem, and with the help of someone else, I can confront my fears. The feeling you get from facing your fears is so exhilarating; and you're left with that feeling for several days. You feel like you can do anything; you become a much bolder version of yourself. I find that the risk is well worth the reward.
Paul wrote to Timothy, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” (2 Tim. 1:7-KJV). Below are four things you can do to strengthen your faith in times of fear according to Charles Stanley, In Touch Ministries: “First, get your eyes off of your problem(s) and onto Jesus. He's the Source of all your supply, and He's completely reliable, possessing all knowledge and authority. Speak aloud the words of Hebrews 13:6 until they sink deep within your spirit: “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?” People may criticize, reject, ridicule, and persecute you, but they can’t take away your salvation, your relationship with Jesus Christ, your eternal home in heaven, or the joy, contentment, and inner strength the Lord imparts to you. Second, ask the Lord to give you the help you need. It's one thing to say, “The Lord is my helper,” and another to say, “Lord, help me today... help me right now in this situation.” You may need an answer to a problem, friendship, a good mentor or teacher, wise counsel, or extra energy and strength. Be specific in your requests. Third, encourage yourself by memorizing the Word of God and quoting it often when you need a fear-buster of inner strength. Take Isaiah 41:10-13 to heart. In this passage, the Lord promises to give us His presence; His power, which is vastly superior to his strength; His provision, which is more than sufficient; and His protection against all of our enemies. What more could you need? Remind the Lord often of His promises to you. Finally, ask others to pray for you. Ask them to uphold you daily in prayer and, in turn, pray for them and their success. We read in James 5:16, “Pray for one another so that you may be healed.”

The Long Night by Jujuan Johnson (A creative-writing high school class assignment)
Part I The year was eighteen sixty-four, some twenty, thirty years ago. I was a young lad, in a company of sixty or so that would normally be one hundred. The company saw action in the third year of the war, going on to its fourth. The regiment that I was so proud to be part of saw the deaths of many a good boy, who deserved a long and promising life. But, some of the men who were part of my regiment, in my own opinion, did not deserve to be with us, for they gave their companies a bad look. True to fact that every company in Mr. Lincoln’s grand ole Army of the Potomac had a man like this, and the men around him whose heads were screwed on right wanted to unscrew this man’s and roast it on their campfire, then feed it to the hogs. How this man in my company survived to see daylight again is as much of a mystery as myself surviving the war, even more so. The popular name going round that the veterans use to describe this type of man was Jonah. I haven’t a clue what his real name was, and I wouldn’t lift a finger if it would help me to no longer be ignorant of his true name. Sometimes, I recollect to myself moments spent in the company of my company’s very own Jonah, and I laugh. So hard in fact that I near soil myself. If I recall correctly, this man, if it is proper to call him such, joined Company D of the hundreth and fifty-second New York Volunteers, mid eighteen sixty-three. I personally stayed clear away from the new recruits, to avoid any sort of connection . I have already seen so many men fall, I did not want to see anymore men fall who had any sort of connection with me. Of course, I was always talking to my mess mates since we shared a tent together. There is no way I would not talk to them, plus, I was not that great of a cook, but that was not the same for one of my mess mates, name of John or Jack. He was with the company since its creation, same as I. Anyway, the boy could cook. As for the other two men in our tent, their cooking was the equivalent of my cooking, like watching a child herd cattle. Well, maybe not to that sort of extreme. What we had to cook certainly was not that of a superb restaurant in New York City. Hardtack, a hard biscuit with no taste. Possibly the most soul challenging thing I have ever had to do was eat hardtack, next to killing a man of course. We were lucky to find fresh food on the march or in camp, fruit too. Heck, we were lucky to get food that wasn’t all that fresh. The salted pork was a delicacy among my fellow mess mates and company soldiers. Now, the pork, plus hardtack, and coffee was a tolerable meal. I’d take that today, if I had to. It was relaxing, cooking our supper, in other words making the man who could cook cook our food, and wait till it was done. This is where that Jonah comes into play. Continued on page 25

The Long Night by Jujuan Johnson (Continued from page 23) Part II One night, in the spring of sixty-four, the regiment was on the march all day. We were worn like an oxen on the field, my brogans were devils to my feet. I wanted to cut them off, they were hurting something awful. My mess mates and I hurried to fix up our tent and gather together our rations. It was not much, but we tried to make a meal out it. I felt proud of myself when we were distributing our rations, being the only one to offer up something fresh. During the march, I managed to spot a tree of apples, me and a few men rushed to the tree and snatched up as many as we could possibly fit in our haversacks. So, we handed over our food and let the chef get cooking. We sat around the kitchen talking, catching up on the daily news, which was the entire regiment marching all day. But there was a twist, one of the mates spotted with their little eye a woodpecker, pecking away at a poor tree. It was a dramatic and new story, the most interesting story of the day. But the most interesting story was soon to arrive. As the mates and I sat around conversing, men around the corner from us starting hollering in an angry sort of way. We immediately thought it a simple misunderstanding or a rivalry among mess mates. It was not. It was, however, a signal that the Jonah was on his way, judging from the fact that the men were yelling specifically for someone to watch their step and be careful not to step through their kitchen, then he appeared from around the corner. He walked over in a crooked manner, with his uniform in shambles. He had a face equivalent to that of a dumbfounded horse. Cleary his mess mates wanted nothing to do with him and unleashed him onto the entire camp. His attention was directly towards our cook. For one reason, he was known as the best cook in the company. And I always wondered why he was with us instead of the other cooks in-charge of the camp’s kitchen, but I felt questions would ruin what I had going. Anyway, the Jonah was curious. He was intrigued by our supper was. He leaned in close to smell what was brewing up. I believe in that moment, my heart skipped a beat. Then he stumbled and ruined our kitchen, our coffee poured into the earth, our hardtack flung out of the skillet along with our pork onto the ground. Our chef was so infuriated that he went right for his rifle, I grabbed him and tried to prevent from killing the poor fool. In fact, myself being near the stack of rifles was unhealthy for the Jonah. Trying to preserve his life, I yelled for him to stay away from us. He said sorry, and we proceeded quickly to try and recover what food we could to make whatever meal possible out of the remains. I know one thing for sure, that there was a long and disappointing night.

Looking FORWARD
I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:1
I use to love saying “we have work to do” to my friend, Neil Woodard, our late Editor in Chief. Neil would just smile and nod his head in agreement. Today, as I work to complete this October issue we are reminded that the race is not to the swift but to those who finish. I quoted Elder Thomas Williams last month as he said in one of our conversations, “I don’t want to leave this earth without fulfilling the purpose for my life.” I got the news of Elder Williams’ passing on October 26 and I am reminded of Isaiah 55:8-9 which says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” “Therefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” (Hebrews 12:1) At the publishing of this issue we accept the calling and recognize the challenge of the work we still have to do. We are trusting God to provide as we look ahead: 1) Next month, we want to acknowledge the contributions of our friend Elder Dr. Thomas Williams. So we invite you to submit pictures, short stories, or quotes in his honor and memory to remnantmagazine@yahoo.com. We have a lot to give thanks for. 2) We will celebrate our one year anniversary in January 2017. A bittersweet celebration it will be. 3) We are looking to move to the next level of our vision for this magazine to support community outreach so we ask for your continued prayers that God will lead us to connect with the right people and open doors of opportunity for ways we can be of support. We invite you to take part in this endeavor – we welcome your ideas. 4) Pray with us as we consider expanding the list of topics we cover and how we cover them in The Remnant Magazine. Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. 1 Corinthians 9:24
