EDITOR’S

(NOTES)

SWISH by Mary Coleman As we celebrate the first full year of publishing I find myself reflecting over the past twelve months. The other night in a dream I saw a familiar move I witnessed on the basketball court. I woke up thinking where have/did I see that move? It came back to me in a matter of seconds and remembering the event brought a smile to my face and made my heart do a little dance. What did it mean? Let me share the story of the event. Our late Editor in Chief, Elder Neil Woodard, loved the game of basketball and I know he loved playing more than he loved watching. At age 60 he would not turn down an opportunity to give the young men a run for their money on the court. One day I had an opportunity to watch him in action as he so boldly included himself in a game with a bunch of young athletes. I imagine they were in their early to mid thirties or so and none nearly as old as Neil. That didn’t matter to Neil and I was feeling vibes from those young men that obviously didn’t deter Neil. They were polite and thank goodness respectful as the team captains selected their players. The game started and Neil did his thing to carry his weight. Suddenly, feet planted in the left corner of the court’s three pointer range from the basket, I observed Neil do something I had never seen before. He took control of the ball with one hand and used the other hand to wave across his head as if to brush his hair back and SWISH, a three pointer! This move ignited a roar of jubilance from the players. I could see the mood of the game change and the “why don’t this old man go sit down” attitude quickly changed to one of furious competition. It wasn’t long before one of his teammates had the ball and tried to imitate the three pointer play made by Neil. Yeah, the hand wave and all… Unfortunately, he didn’t quite make the basket but that opened the door for a different kind of comradery. Neil’s image as an “old man” quickly switched to one of role model, friend and someone to look up to. You might ask what my point is. Well the answer to that question is we will never know the impact we can have if we allow the obstacles of life whether age, illness, economics, environment, race, shame, indifference, complacency or whatever deter us. Neil suffered with bad knees and other ailments but that didn’t stop him from mingling with the young as a mentor. God has given each of us gifts and He gives us opportunities to use those gifts. Romans 11:29 tells us those gifts are without repentance in other words they are irrevocable and we can choose how we use our gifts whether to do good or do evil. “Life is not a puzzle that God can’t fix. Remember He created ALL the pieces.” God has a plan for your life! There will be some SWISH opportunities but they will never happen if you don’t get in the game or you give up too soon. That my friend has been the lesson for me over the past twelve months to stay in the game! According to 1 Corinthians 2:9 (KJV), “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” Though Neil is no longer with us in this physical realm his spirit will live on forever and the work of this magazine will celebrate many more anniversaries as God provides opportunities. Get in the game and experience your SWISH moments… “Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.” Romans 11:5 Page 5 of 32

The Word of God I Asked the Lord to Help Me Grow and He Made It Rain by Shelby Price-Mallory CAST YOUR CARES ON THE LORD AND HE WILL SUSTAIN YOU, HE WILL NEVER LET THE RIGHTEOUS BE SHAKEN. PSALMS 55:22 As we come to the close of 2016 and the beginning of a New Year in a few days I reflect on what 2016 has brought to me and to other believers as well. My youngest son printed the above quote on face book around June of 2016 as he reached a bump in the road on his life journey, “I asked God to help me grow and he made it rain.“ I had been on him several times to stop doing something that was not pleasing to God and as most young people do he would not listen and had to suffer the consequences of not listening to me and getting into to trouble. He took his punishment like a man although it broke my heart to see him go through this but told me a few days ago “mama I have no one to blame but myself for the consequences of not listening to you when you were only looking out for my wellbeing so don’t feel bad and blame yourself. It is over and done with now and I learned something from it and God watched over me.” I have thought about this quote a lot over the past few months and I realize that as believers in Christ that rain comes in many forms, pain, cancer, death, losing a job, your home or sometimes just losing your way and I have experienced that rain many times over the past year and through my life here on Earth and will experience the rain until God takes me to my eternal home. The rain came this year first in my son getting into trouble, then me having to experience going into the hospital for surgery and the continued problems with that surgery even now, losing 2 of the faithful members of my husband‘s church whose shoulders we have stood on for over 10 years, who died within 3 months of each other, losing our close friend Rainer Coleman and just a few days ago with my husband’s hospitalization for his Sickle Cell Disease. You see the rain comes and as humans and I am speaking for myself I have sometimes asked God why, even though we are not supposed to question God for he makes no mistakes. It’s funny though how God always lets me know he is still there and he knows what we are going through because there is nothing his children go through he has not already experienced and that is why he came to Earth as a man so when the rain comes, him being the loving father he is would understand and will comfort us. I was listening to the radio a few days ago and our little dog that we have accidently hit the radio button and changed the radio station. I heard the voice of a minister and he was talking about a man whose son was recently killed and the man began to ask God, ”God where were you when my son was killed and God answered him and told him I was in the same place that I was when they killed my son.” This brought tears to my eyes but joy to my soul to know that no matter what God is there for us through good and bad times and that according to scripture he would wipe away all the tears from our eye. I once told one of the patients I have Mr. Smith I want to go to heaven and when I get there, there are some questions I want to ask God as to why he let those things happen and he quickly told me Mrs. Price you will be in paradise that will be the furthest thing from your mind and I had to smile when he told me this. So if you have experienced some rain this year and you will experience the rain at various times in your life just hold on to God’s unchanging hand, he has not forgotten nor will he forsake his own. He knows and he cares and he is just a prayer away. “Be strong, be courageous, Do not be afraid or discouraged, For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

Hello Endurance Your Advice is Always Helpful by Karlisa Goines

These past few months I’ve started running, something I’ve always wanted to get back to since I was a young girl. Once I began, who knew God would use that time to down load lessons that correlated with my spiritual journey as well. Hello Endurance. It’s interesting how you seem to periodically show up along this life journey, from time to time I hear your advice, telling me hold on, keep going and whatever you do, don’t quit! Well, who knew I would face you amid my daily exercise. Then again, that may not be that much of a surprise but it became a very impactful exercise routine when I began to see how the lessons I was learning in the natural so closely related to the principles God chose to be helpful to me spiritually as well. The Word of God confirms scriptures that speak to enduring. A few that are most commonly combined, repeated and or heard as such, "the race is not given to the swift nor to the strong but to the one who endures to the end." Although that statement in and of itself is not a scripture its understood to address endurance in both Ecclesiastes 9:11a NIV and Matthew 10:22-23 NIV; 24:12-13 NIV. It started with my daily runs, the determination of endurance whispering in my ear more than once don’t stop, continue to the end, and keep running until you’ve reached your set time. As I continued forward, this thought of endurance also begin to point out the importance of Pace, Proper Breathing, Knowing My Race and Focus. Pace, I found most necessary, when coming to that place in running or exercise in general where your leg muscles burn and feelings of fatigue set in. Endurance teaches, those are the moments in which you don't quit but keep going with the proper speed and pace to actively stick with the exercise routine having the ability to press past this discomfort, the strength to get through what felt like a breaking point that would ultimately prepare me to run even farther. Not long after reaching that point, the burn and fatigue did subside. The proper speed and pace helped me to get pass the muscle fatigue. Each time these analogies from a natural race came up, God matched them with a spiritual perspective. One would think this must have been a long day of exercise but it all happened over a course of time running on the treadmill. As I thought about the natural aspects of Pace, I also begin to think about the application of this spiritually, how many times pacing myself in that which God has given me to do was necessary and helpful. Staying within the speed limits God has given me for a place of service maximized the timing and duration of His purposes completely fulfilled. I began to recognize and understood the importance of not getting ahead of Him nor falling behind Him but keeping in motion with Him. In my spiritual journey, there were times I have gotten out of rhythm and off pace as does an athlete may in running. In running naturally this happened more when I found myself paying attention from a peripheral view, so to speak, to the running pace of the person on the treadmill next to me, the sound of rhythm their feet would make on the surface could distract me from keeping the rhythm my own feet were making. This same scenario is true when we pay attention to the path of other people's calling(s), we lose sight and rhythm of our own. Spiritually Pace “yourself” with God, let Him teach you how to Pace and place your feet for your race ahead. Make my steps steady through Your promises, God; don’t let any sin dominate me. Psalm 119:133 HCSB

Looking at Life from the Tree Stand by Mark Haley I headed into the 2016 hunting season with a heavy heart as my longtime friend, Rainer Coleman, had been called home in late September. Although we hadn’t hunted together in several years as time, family, and occupations had changed our schedules. We always talked, joked and ribbed each other numerous times during the fall. I always look forward to hunting season and the chance to getting back into my stand, as I have always used the solitude of my deer stand to read, reflect and pray. I call it my “God Time” as I climb into my stand, I’m literally closer to God as I am perched some 20 plus feet in the air. This year was no different, but yet it was! God revealed several things to me this year as I processed all the events of 2016. Here are a few of the things he revealed to me this season. Each morning as the first light of day arrives; everything comes to “life.” First, the bugs and rodents in the leaves, then the chirps of the birds are heard, followed by squirrels, deer and turkey all scurrying around making noise. I’d seen this a thousand times, but this year it took new meaning as I read John 8:25 Jesus said “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Life begins with Jesus, on this side of eternity he leads us through the darkness and as we enter his presence we “have” the light of life for eternity. No more darkness, no more tears… What an awesome promise! Amen! The morning of Nov 14th was and is a special day for me as my wife, luckily, accepted my engagement proposal on this date, so it is my “lucky “day. That morning I found myself reflecting on my grandfather, Rainer and other loved ones that have made an impact in my life. As I prayed that morning in my blind, tears flooded my eyes, and then my soul was calmed as I thought of my loved ones singing in the great heavenly choir. Can you imagine, what a beautiful chorus of; Holy, Holy, Holy! But I still found myself wondering, questioning God; Why Rainer, why now? God then put Jeremiah 29:11 on my heart…”For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” As I finished my prayer there were several cardinal’s in the bush beside me, I again chocked up as I knew they were there to remind me; that I’m never alone and that God has a plan, bigger than

Keeping The Affordable Care Act The Affordable Care Act (2010) was created to increase the number of people insured throughout the country. On January 20, 2017, all of President Obama’s hard work could be in jeopardy. Many people will be affected if this provision is repealed (removed). The Affordable Care Act allows people to select their health insurance plan through HealthCare.Gov or other staterun websites. Women’s health, including birth control is provided. Preventive services are provided as well. In order to assert your rights as citizens, it is important to remain informed. Watch the news, research the information, and speak to legislators and representatives to make sure that your voice heard. Go to healthypeople.org to find out more information about the state of health affairs and to learn more about some of the health issues that affect many throughout the country today. On January 21, 2017, more than 200,000 women and men will march from the Lincoln Memorial to the White House in solidarity to make sure that women’s rights are upheld. It is an opportunity to ask for equal rights, to reduce health disparities, and to let the new president know that you stand for what you believe in. It’s also an opportunity to show your House Representatives (Congressmen and women) and Senators that they should support initiatives to protect and benefit all Americans, not just small numbers.

Stay tuned for future events and health information that will be available through the Institute of Education for the Care of Chronic Diseases. “Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.” Romans 11:5 Page 13 of 32

Hello Endurance Your Advice is Always Helpful by Karlisa Goines (Continued from page 9) Proper breathing oh boy, did I find that to be necessary! Finding and maintaining the right breathing pattern that suited me was helpful to my ability to keep the pace set. The principle of Endurance helped me understand that if I keep my breathing at a steady pattern I will be able to run a lot farther than I would if my breathing were uncontrolled. During this physical run, I noticed times when my breathing drop out of control and quickly after that my rhythm and pace were off as well. In my run, I begin to quickly lose energy and motivation to keep going, immediately the urge to stop came. Thinking thoughts of enduring to the end, to continue, I had to quickly refocus my breathing pattern with the right mental focus and my pace steadily returned. When serving the Lord, there are times, we must intentionally focus on our responses and reactions to situations we encounter which is where disciplined breathing and thinking is helpful to respond correctly to the people and situations I or you run by on our race.) As children of God, God has by His spirit given us the fruit of the spirit …self-control (Galatians 5:22-23NIV). Disciplined breathing often contributes to selfcontrol. Where is, God training our hearts, and calling us to utilize the fruit He has given us, more self-control? When speaking to others, the Word of God helps me focus on His guidance, "a gentle response turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger” (Proverbs 15:1NIV) “may the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight oh Lord my Rock and my Redeemer” (Psalm 19:14NIV) Help me Jesus to recognize all the areas you are calling me to utilize self-control. Knowing your race. After my run one day, I was unloading the dishwasher and God began to speak with me about, the importance of knowing my race. When you’re running a race it’s important to know your function in the race more than you know the next persons even if it’s the relay, it’s important to know your role in that event so you can be most efficient in what you give. If I expected to endure the amount of time that I set out to run for the day, before I get started, endurance teaches me the necessity of being prepared. For me getting prepared, looks like sufficient hydration so my body can withstand the exertion, adequate rest the day before, time management and keeping within my strengths and limitations. From a spiritual perspective, it is so easy to get caught up in the duties and formation of somebody else’s race, that we neglect the preparation process we need ourselves. Know your race, stay in your lane and build your endurance. The more you know your race, the better prepared you are to run it and endure it. To learn my race meant concentrating on what God had given me to do which lends less time to focus on another person’s role. In a natural track meet, some events are teams and some are not but in between races, there may be waiting involved. Waiting gives the athlete time to rest from the last race, focus on the race to come, mentally and physically prepare, review the formation needed to accomplish the task at hand and all that is required to finish. Being spiritually aware of your race and knowing what it involves although that may not be every step it still brings about the ability to wait and soar. Life becomes less complicated when we focus on what God has given “us” to do and not everybody else’s duties unless otherwise responsible to do so. But ultimately as each of us work at what we have been given and finish, it seems we still end up connecting in some way to God’s preordained will. Every one’s journey, is designed to accomplish His purposes in the earth the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ being shared across the nations (Matthew 28:16-:20NIV); (1 Corinthians 3:5-11NIV). Stay encouraged and put your hope in the Lord as you refocus on what God has given you to do and determine not to quit. “Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:31NIV) Focus. There’s is so much noise going on in the gym, each time I run I’ve recognized how beneficial it is to find a focal point. If I do not quickly find that place to focus I can easily get distracted from my race. The ability to focus in the race is highly important and often at times difficult to do when there is constant motion and movement going on around you. However, this area is probably one of the most important, “the need to zone out away from the noise.” The need to focus became evident to me with principles that applied, once again, naturally and spiritually. How often do we get distracted spiritually, loosing focus on what God has told us to do? Naturally, lack of focus can cause inability to find a proper pace, find and maintain the disciplined breathing patterns, unpreparedness and waste of one’s own time and purpose in exercise for the day. Looking at Life from the Tree Stand by Mark Haley (Continued from page 11) what I can see and definitely more than I can comprehend. I actually bagged a nice buck just shortly after this special time of prayer. I told you it was my lucky day! Lastly, late in the season, as I hunted along a creek bottom I observed several does as they meandered through the waters of the creek, lowering their heads cautiously for a quick drink. Always ready to bolt at the first sign or sense of danger. Psalm 24 came to my thoughts, “As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.” So often I get so busy, that I don’t take to time slow down and sip on the water. Often, my spiritual life can become careless and dehydrated without the “living water.” We must be cautious, as evil lurks, waiting to take a foothold in our lives. We need friends, accountability to help us see or sense danger in our lives. I strongly urge you to find someone that can hold you accountable. I leave you with a line from a commercial… Stay Thirsty my Friends…Thirsty For the Living Water!!

Hello Endurance Your Advice is Always Helpful by Karlisa Goines (Continued from page 15) Lastly, naturally and spiritually endurance teaches me the vital importance of focus in this melodic way …Israel Houghton sings a song titled “To Worship You I Live, I hope you get time to listen to it but a few of the lyrics say, “Away, away from the noise; away, away to hear Your voice and meet with You; nothing else matters; my one desire is, to worship You I live, I live to worship You.” To hear God’s voice regarding the decisions and situations in our life whether it’s a decision regarding your spiritual journey, your job, marriage, health, college, relationships, family, a major move, a crisis, a major purchase, whatever it is sometimes getting away from the noise to intentionally focus on God may be very important to hear what He desires to say to you. Father help us to sustain and run the race that we have individually been given by You remembering with You Father God we can always expect to endure to the end. Lord Jesus thank you for your last declaration on the cross, “it is finished” by Your Holy Spirit we have been given eternal Hope in You and we believe You will one day manifest that glorious finish line to the end of our race. Until then, help us to always remember we can do all things through You Lord Jesus Christ whom gives us the strength (Philippians 4:13 NIV). We declare that our sufficiency only holds firm in You, Lord Jesus. (2 Corinthians 3:4-5NIV) Help us daily to … lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. (Hebrews 12:1-3 NIV) Fight the good fight, finish the race and keep the faith. (2 Timothy 4:7NIV) Thank you, endurance, every time, your advice is helpful!

Valencia’s Letter by J. Quest Valencia, I really enjoyed our earlier conversation and discussions about the Lord. God is so good and is worthy to be praised! Please consider the following reflections as we glory in the absolute goodness of the Almighty God. As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one (Romans 3:10). For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23. As you know, the first earthly man, Adam, sinned while in the Garden of Eden; he disobeyed God’s command to not eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:17). God said, “For in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” When Adam disobeyed God’s command and ate (of the fruit)…he died spiritually, not physically. Adam’s relationship with God was severed based on his disobedience (sin). Sin is an affront to God’s holiness and righteousness; sin is in direct contradiction to God’s holy character and essence. We cannot fellowship with God when we’re in a sinful state. After eating of the forbidden fruit, this is why we see Adam hiding from God. He had previously fellowshipped with the LORD in the cool of the day (Genesis 3:8). Only a perfect, sinless sacrifice could ultimately restore the broken relationship between God and man. In their feeble attempt to deal with their wrong doing Adam and Eve sewed fig leaves together to cover their shame and nakedness (Genesis 3:7). We get a glimpse of what God would eventually do through Jesus Christ as we see how an innocent animal had to be sacrificed to “cover” the disobedience of Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:21); God made coats of skins, and clothed them. Jesus Christ, God Himself, would become the ‘Lamb slain from the foundation of the world’ to once and for all deal with the destructive nature of sin and bondage on mankind (Revelation 13:8). Romans 5:12 says, Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned… The soul that sins, it shall die; but we also know that God does not take pleasure in people dying who are not in right relationship with Him. Jesus came that we might have life and that more abundantly (John 10:10). The gospels were written to show us Who Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is! Matthew, Mark, Luke and John each give us a unique portrait of Who Christ Jesus actually is so we’ll recognize that He’s God Almighty and that we also desperately need Him to save us from our sins. The Book of Acts tells and shows us how to be saved. We see many examples of people actually getting saved in the Book of Acts. It’s the history book of the New Testament and shows us how to meet Jesus. The same Jesus we just learned about in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Romans – Jude are epistles (letters) written to churches (or to saved believers such as Timothy, Titus and Philemon) to instruct us (the church) on how to grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. If you take special notice Valencia, you’ll see that Romans through Jude don’t attempt to tell them how to get saved because, again, they were already saved. Just read the introduction to the books in the New Testament and the individualized personal greetings will speak for themselves. For example: Romans 1:7, “To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 16:1, “I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea”. Lastly, 1 Corinthians 1:1, 2: “Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother. Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours”.

Valencia’s Letter by J. Quest (Continued from page 19) The Book of Revelation is the last book of the bible; it tells God’s servants things which must shortly come to pass; and He sent and signified it (His message) by His angel unto His servant John. The Book of Revelation was also written to those who were saved. Please see Revelation 1:1, The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto His servants things which must shortly come to pass; and He sent and signified it by His angel unto His servant John. So, in order to show myself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, I should be able to rightly divide the word of truth (II Timothy 2:15). As I rightly divide this great word of truth, I quickly realize that a sinner must die to himself (to his sinful lifestyle) so that he/she can begin this new walk in Christ Jesus. God grants us belief and repentance to begin this new walk and life. God has dealt to every man the measure of faith (Romans 12:3). My belief, or faith, helps me realize that I’m a sinner and desperately need the saving grace of a Savior. There is only one Savior and His name is Jesus Christ; for neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved (except the name, Jesus Christ), Acts 4:12. Since God has dealt to every man the measure of faith I have the faith that I need to know that God is real and that I must seek Him in repentance (to be saved from my sins). For as you know Valencia, God commands all men everywhere to repent (Acts 17:30). Repentance: this was John the Baptist’s primary message. He told his listeners to, “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand (Matthew 3:2).” The first word declared by the Apostle Peter on the Day of Pentecost when asked, “What must we do?” was repent, (Acts 2:38)! Jesus said, Unless ye repent ye shall also likewise perish (Luke 13:3)! Repentance is the name of the game. Without repentance we will never see God’s face in peace! True repentance makes us see our utter unworthiness and sinfulness as we stand before a holy, sinless, righteous and absolutely pure God. Accordingly, true repentance shows us the pathway to God is through our loving Mediator, Jesus Christ! We die to our sins in the watery grave. God sent John (the Baptist) with a baptism of repentance to make straight the path for Jesus Christ (Matthew 3:3). A person, who has died physically, is buried in the ground, in a grave. When we die to our sins, we are also buried in a grave, a watery grave. Romans 6:1-7 says, What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we that are dead to sin live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death? Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death, we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection: knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we should also live with Him. (Where was Jesus resurrected from Valencia…? He was resurrected from His sepulcher). So baptism is not a symbol to the world; the ‘world’ doesn’t care about what we (Christians) do. Baptism is the place of burial (for our sins). When God has granted us repentance, He meets us in the watery grave when we’re baptized in the name, Jesus Christ. Otherwise, why would Paul declare in Acts 22:16, “And now why tarriest thou? Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. Valencia, please take particular notice of what Paul asked in Acts 22:16… And now why tarriest thou? (What are you waiting for?) Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, (how) calling on the name of the Lord. (What’s the name of the Lord? Jesus Christ!). The blood of Jesus Christ is applied to our soul in the baptismal waters (watery grave) to wash away our sins (so we will have the power to walk in newness of life).

Hello Remnant Magazine friends! I’d like to introduce myself. I am the owner and CEO of Uma Glow, LLC which is a division of UMA Enterprises, LLC. My slogan is “Let Me Help You LOVE You” by taking care of yourself from the outside in. It is a commandment to honor the vessel that God has given so you can be the best for your family, friends and anyone else that needs you. We are all exposed to chemicals every day through our environment, but we have a choice in what we put into and on our bodies. I encourage everyone to choose a healthy diet with less processed foods. Think about what you last ate. How close was that meal to its natural state? The further away you get from the natural (loaded with ingredients that you can barely pronounce), the closer you get to living less of a quality of life in the future. The same goes for the products you use every day that are applied to your skin and hair. But the good news is you can make the choice to love yourself as God would have you to do! Let’s start with the wonderful products that my business produces. My products are manufactured with certified organic ingredients, fair trade ingredients and essential oils. We do not use any chemicals, fillers or toxic materials. I’ve researched each ingredient used in my products which can be reviewed at your leisure on my website www.umaglow.com. Creative Writing The Wilderness by Jujuan Johnson Part I The Wilderness was hell. Never again will I see forests as beautiful creations from God. Now, forever to remain, is an image of fire. The distant cries of the dying, the approaching fiery yells from rebel soldiers, the crackles of rifle fire echoing through the trees like a church bell through a town. The ground is riddled with the corpses of Union and Confederate men. Burned, shot, stabbed, trampled, and beaten men lay dead or dying in front of me. All asking for my help. Yet, I am the one in need of assistance. It was May 4th, 1864. General Hancock’s II Corps was on the march through Virginia. The 152nd was attached to II Corps, 2nd Division under General Gibbon, 2nd Brigade under General Owen. The 2nd Brigade was mostly referred to as the Philadelphia Brigade, yet the 152nd was a New York regiment. Luckily, we were only assigned to them for three months, starting in March of the same year. We marched from our camps on what was quite a frosty morning. We crossed the Rapidan on pontoon bridges made by the engineers. II Corps was to cross at Ely’s Ford, and the rest of the grand Army of the Potomac at a place called Germanna Mills if memory proves. Personally, I thought it not very wise to separate the II Corps from the rest of the army, but given the reputation, only a fool would dare attack us! That was my 23 year old self talking nonsense. The next day, May 5th, we heard of at least two of General Hancock’s divisions entering the field of fire. The echoes of artillery, rifle fire, the beat of the drum and playing of the fife, the screams and yells of men on both sides rumbled all around. Anderson, as per usual, gets a bit jumpy at the many sounds of war. I tried my best to calm him down. Never would I yell or blame him for acting in this manner. After almost an entire year spent with us in good old Company D, he still has not gotten used to these sounds. But how can you become accustomed to these sounds? I ask myself this question everyday since. But, I must give tribute to Anderson because the regiment really did not see much action and just about everybody in the regiment could not just simply get accustomed to the sounds of war. Take the sound of the cannon, for example. To this day, it is hard to describe. It is as if God himself was swiping through the air with his very sword. Then it hits you. The rebel batteries the next day were almost impossible to see, due to the vast amount of trees and brush shielding them from view. But when we were gifted a glance at the guns, my body near collapsed at the sight of them. It is a very different feeling being on the other side of the gun barrel. It is then, that you know, your life may end at any moment. And no one will know. These thoughts flow freely through my mind when I recollect old memories of times past, and when I was a soldier in the rebellion. Smoking my pipe, reading past letters, and talking hogwash with Anderson mostly kept my mind right. But not all the time did these methods work. I often ended up coming to in the night, as many men did. The thought of sudden death was a constant, kept deep within. No one shows fear, for the one that does, he is weak. Poppycock! Any man that says he wasn’t scared is a liar. And I’d sing out to him in front of the entire regiment, 1,000 strong if I could. For that man, is the equivalent of a rat. Cowering to the shadows. The Wilderness by Jujuan Johnson (Continued from page 23) Part II On May 6th, 1864, I earned my red badge of courage. That’s soldier talk for wound. At dawn, General Hancock’s II Corps marched into battle as one. While on the march, I began to wonder to myself if I will ever lay eyes on open ground. Battles between armies were fought in open ground, not in this mess of a place. The Wilderness was rugged and easy to lose yourself in. What fool would ever fight in that? I asked myself. And sure enough, there were the rebs in the trees. We open fired on ‘em and to my knowing, we caught them with their pants down. A few moments after, the rebel cannons began to fire upon us. The trees which protected us soon became an enemy. The shrapnel and explosive shot from the cannon shredded through the forest and tore apart the trees, which then proceeded to rain sharp bits of wood all over. I looked over at Anderson, who was hunched down by a rotted tree stump. He was clenching to his rifle, and whenever a shell came by with its terrifying sound, he held it tighter and tighter. By this point, the entire regiment was taking whatever cover it could, this was my chance to make my way over to Anderson. When I did, I heard a distant bugler call for retreat, which was followed closely by men yelling retreat and fall back. We were beating the rebs back! Our regimental leader, Lieutenant Colonel Thompson, ordered for an advance upon the fleeing enemies. So we did. We moved under whatever cover we could and proceeded towards the retreating rebs. Then, from the looks of it all, the rebs got their pride back and held. Then more and more of ‘em come up and began firing at us. We halted and took cover once again. All of what took place lasted for about an hour or so, before we were forced back in a disorganized manner. We remained there, in the woods, for what seemed to be an eternity. We kept falling back, eventually we made it all the way back to the road on which we took to get to the woods earlier that morning. We were trying desperately to hold the earthworks made on the road. The rebs just kept coming and coming, they unleashed their horrible yell, shrieking at the top of their lungs. It filled me with fear, believing that they were so infuriated that they wanted to gut me and the rest of the men I proudly served with. I was so tired from the day’s fighting that I passed out, and from what my mates told me, my head landed on my rifle butt. Which explained why my head hurt so much, it was like my mother hit me with a frying pan for snatching cookies before supper. When I came to, blood was running down my head, and when I started focusing on my surroundings, I laid eyes on the forest set ablaze. That picture is forever wretched on my mind. One of my mess mates, John, and another fellow in our company grabbed me up and ran me to the rear of the line. I was still a little dazed from my passing out. I was rushed to a nearby field hospital, my sight was blurry, so I could not see clearly the horrific sights that filled the hospital, but I could smell the wretched scent from the dead, dying, and the recovering. A doctor wrapped a bandage around my head, and then tended to my right hand which had received some splinter damage. I had no idea. Once I was cared for, another man led me outside, handed me a rifle and gave me back to John. Luckily, John knew that I was unable to fight, so he took my rifle away and sat me down somewhere once we made our way back to the company. We dug in later that night, and I thanked John for all he did. I’d like to say I slept ok that night, but then I’d be lying.

Letter to Valencia by J. Quest (Continued from page 21) What can wash away our sins…nothing but the blood of Jesus Christ! The blood of Jesus Christ has to be applied (according to Acts 22:16) because sins are washed away when we’re baptized and water cannot wash sins away. Physical water cannot wash away spiritual sins; I think we both realize that. So having said that, we can recognize the importance of what’s being communicated in Acts 22:16. It’s in perfect alignment with each of the salvation accounts listed in the Book of Acts. Colossians 3:1 says “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sits on the right hand of God.” I can’t be risen with Christ if I’ve never died with Him. (I have to die first in order to be raised to walk in newness of life). And again, according to Romans 6:3, 4 we’re raised from the (watery) grave to begin walking in newness of life. Jesus opened His disciples understanding (Luke 24:44-48), so that they might understand the scriptures. And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Luke 24 sounds like it was fulfilled in Acts 2:38, doesn’t it?! The church was born on the Day of Pentecost according to Acts 2nd chapter. After Peter, supported by the other disciples (Acts 2:14; Acts 2:37), preached the word of the Lord, the question was asked, What must we do (Acts 2:37)? Peter’s response was Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. In Acts 10:44-48, while Peter preached the word of the Lord, the Holy Ghost fell on the (Gentile) believers (for they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God). Peter then asked, Can any man forbid water that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord… Acts 19:1-6, And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, he said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on Him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. Valencia, it’s interesting that Paul asked the disciples how they had been baptized as soon as they confided that they had never heard about the Holy Ghost. If you’ll remember, the gift of the Holy Ghost is a promise from God to His people according to Acts 2:38. So by their answer, he knew they hadn’t been baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Jesus told Nicodemus, in John 3, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. And, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. The only baptism that is shown in the scripture (excluding John’s baptism of repentance) is the baptism in the name of Jesus Christ. You will find no one ever being baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. I’m a father, son, veteran, husband and grandfather…but if I write any of those ‘titles’ on my personal check…I wouldn’t be able to cash it… Those are titles, not a name…my point is that you would think that the apostles, personally selected by Jesus Christ, would have done exactly what Jesus intended (if baptizing in the ‘titles’ was actually correct). Yet, we see the apostles doing just what Jesus instructed them to do (Luke 24:46, 47).

Letter to Valencia by J. Quest (Continued from page 27) Lest we forget, we see (hear) Jesus praying in His high-priestly prayer in John 17th chapter that He had manifested His Father’s name to His disciples. I have manifested Thy name unto the men which Thou gavest Me out of the world: Thine they were, and Thou gavest them Me; and they have kept Thy word (John 17:6). And I have declared unto them Thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith Thou hast loved Me may be in them, and I in them (John 17:26). For I have given unto them the words which Thou gavest Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from Thee, and they have believed that Thou didst send Me (John 17:8). Since there is no absolutely no scriptural evidence that anyone was ever baptized according to the strict words of Matthew 28:19, we seem to be left with a glaring dilemma. The apostles were either ALL confused and refused to do what their Lord and Master commanded them to do OR Jesus fully explained “the name” to them. Please don’t take my word for it; just check the evidence clearly displayed throughout the Book of Acts. See for yourself how the apostles baptized those being converted. The proof is indisputable! According to Acts 4:12 there is only one name given to us whereby we must be saved…the name, Jesus Christ! We can believe the scriptural command left for us by the Lord through the apostle Paul (1 Thessalonians 5:21). Prove all things, hold fast to that which is good. In the mouth of two or three witnesses let every word be established (Numbers 35:30). Let’s believe God’s unadulterated word in spite of our traditions and personal biases. God’s word can definitely stand on its own!! Do you remember Apollos? The Lord sent Aquila and Priscilla to present His word to Apollos to show him a more excellent way (Acts 18:24-28)! Apollos was eloquent and mighty in the scriptures…but only knew about the baptism of John (the Baptist). We should all be in a place where we can listen and learn from the Word of God because we don’t know what we don’t know… It’s not a matter of how much we know; the point should be for us to study to show ourselves approved unto God. After all, we’re His servants who are striving to hear Him say, “Well done My good and faithful…!” Please let me know if you care to discuss anything I’ve written in this memo. Written respectfully in humility and love!!! Take care, Valencia!! J. Quest

Looking Forward

Oh how I love Jesus because He first loved me. He has carried us through 2016 and as we awaken to a new year I look forward to the Lord’s plans for us. On behalf of the magazine I give thanks to every person impacted in positive way by this endeavor. I give thanks for every person who helped to make it possible through every level of support. Many of those who started with us have been called home to glory. To those left behind we have much work to do! Special thank to Vivian Allmond-Booker, Lamar Battle and Dr. Betty. Vivian you have been with us from day one and we appreciate you for your many contributions throughout the year and your continued faithfulness through your social media/Facebook contributions. Lamar started earlier on and has never said NO when asked to contribute to our Sports section. Dr. Betty a dear friend of Neil’s, founded NEIL Health Chat© and remains faithful to the legacy… God bless you ALL! As I look forward I hear the voice of the late Elder Neil Woodard, “the best is yet to come.” I also recall some of the following quotes provided in the articles contributed to this issue:

“So if you have experienced some rain this year and you will experience the rain at various times in your life just hold on to God’s unchanging hand, he has not forgotten nor will he forsake his own. He knows and he cares and he is just a prayer away.” Shelby Mallory-Price “We need friends, accountability to help us see or sense danger in our lives.
