EDITOR’S What’s Love got to do with it? We give all of our energy toward that which we love. We give some energy toward that which we feel obligated. Either way our love is shown by the time or energy that we put into a person, a project, an activity, a job or a family. The word states that the love of money is the root of all evil, not money itself, but the love of it. Another expression for love is time. Our love will determine both the amount of time and the quality of time that we invest in a person or activity. If a good portion of our time is spent on financial matters, or on family, or in worship or in studying or practicing for a major event then we actually love that to which our time is devoted. How many of us devote large amounts of time trying to make that dollar? How much time do we put into studying the Word of God? How much time do we assign for prayer, and what about obedience, isn’t obedience to God’s revealed will also a show of love? Doesn’t it take time to at least get to know the will of God and then execute it? What’s love got to do with it? What is…it? It…is the quality of our lives and interaction with God and man. Without love we are like lost sheep wandering around and never really fitting in to experience a rich life, not necessarily a financially rich life but a love rich life. This first issue of the Remnant Magazine focuses on love in the area of professional sports, health care, family, cultural differences and relationship with God and each other. In this sense love is time because whatever activities we engage in takes time and whether we make mistakes in life or not (and we all do) the time spent is as the sowing of a seed that grows and yields a return that we often cannot foresee. Mistakes are good if we’ll take the time to learn from them.
(NOTES) I have prayed with people who while in prayer shout; I love you Jesus, and I listen. I cannot condemn anyone but I can sure assess myself and as much as I know that God requires love, I have to ask myself have I given God the time of day today? Have I acknowledged his revealed will for me? Have I taken the time to even find out what his will for me is? Jesus said; if you love me, keep my commandments. That is because ‘to obey is better than sacrifice’ (1 Samuel 15:22). We often think of sacrifice as the way to God’s heart, however, it is not about the tithe or the offering or even how often one goes to Church. It is about putting in the time with God through prayer, meditation and study that we’re given our assignments and understanding the ways of God. This takes time. Our assignment may also take time because we all have characteristics that we need to grow into and out of. Growth occurs as we gain experience and experience is achieved through the process of time. Again God said; to obey is better than sacrifice (1 Samuel 15:22). Sacrifice if we’re not careful can become an obligation that we perform as a routine and while God may or may not accept our sacrifices, we can be clear and sure that God will accept our obedience to him. There are some sacrifices that men, pastors, Church policy or any organization’s policy will require of us. This does not mean that God wants you to engage, it means that is someone’s policy. Sacrifice is not wrong, but obedience to God’s revealed will is the mark of true love for God. If we love God, then we’ll know how to effectively love and ultimately heal others and that will make an incredible difference for us all.

youth Recognizing Your Gifts (With a Focus on Our Youth) by Mary Coleman Around 1995 I was blessed with the opportunity to experience the love and heartache of a mother when I functioned in the role of caretaker/guardian for two of my nephews during a nine month period. Since I had no children of my own, this opportunity gave me firsthand knowledge of life as a mother of two growing boys. When I look back on that chapter in my life I believe the most significant memory is partly what has motivated me to write this article. I watched my two nephews with amazement as they exercised their gift of pencil drawing. They were big into “anime”, a form of Japanese animation. Everywhere they went they carried a drawing pad and pencil. I mean everywhere. It was like some of us are today with our cell phones. Some of you know exactly what I mean. As it was with their drawing pads then, your cell phone goes with you even to the bathroom now. Ok, admit it, you know there is no denying this truth so you may as well laugh with me. Nelson and Arvelle Whitaker At any rate, their love of their gift landed them in college with a concentration in the arts and now they are enjoying their careers in jobs as graphic artists. The eldest was also blessed musically and wanted to play the bass guitar. I am thankful, his parents, both enlisted soldiers stationed in Germany at the time, recognized the desire and potential in their eldest son and provided the means for him to cultivate his gift. It was an interesting time for me when the boys and I went shopping to pick out a bass guitar. Arvelle found his instrument and we got a little amplifier, came home and he sat on his bed and immediately started strumming familiar tunes. Mind you, up to that point, he had no formal instruction on the instrument. I share that chapter of my life because it provides a great introduction to the benefit of the subject of “recognizing your gifts.” As you probably already know, some people don’t have to wonder about their gift(s) as in the case with Arvelle and Nelson. While others including myself, search and may ultimately find the gift(s) and some others may never realize or recognize the gift(s) that are inherently woven into the fabrics of our lives. Hence, the purpose of this writing is a source of encouragement and motivation to help you discover the greatness of you.
The Interview I conducted an interview with a 17 year old high school student who has an expressed interest in journalism, with a specialty in video editing. However, when asked about his plans after school he said he is currently trying to figure out what he wants to do. I believe his response is more the norm because many people think they know and they start college on one career path and they end up changing midstream. He likes writing… Though Hollis says he isn’t sure what he wants to do, when asked if he could think of any driving force leading him down his current career path he said at a young Hollis Brown age he was naturally into English. Hmmm I believe this young man has it figured out. He said, “I was always good at writing – at least I thought so.” The first major clue and second he said english has been his best subject. Recognizing Your Gifts (continued from page 9) by Mary Coleman Sounds like some good attributes for success in his current chosen career path in mass communications utilizing what sounds like a gift for writing and speaking. He said his school offered a specialty program and mass communications is what he chose. Hopefully we can get him to exercise that gift and write an article for the Remnant Magazine! When asked about any role models influencing his career decision, he said there is not any one person that he looks up to but he is inspired by his peers in the Mass Communications program at his school. He explained that mass communications is a team effort and he likes his peers and that motivates him to continue in the program. When asked about hobbies he said gaming (video games) and he is currently learning how to play the piano. Hollis also said he liked learning and researching as a kid when asked, “What he really loves to do now and as a kid?” I thought it very interesting when I asked for a picture to include with this article; I was given a picture of him standing on the steps of the “Virginia Historical Society”… a fourth witness “I believe” pointing to his gift. The Bible tells us in 2 Corinthians 13:1, “In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.” Hollis has revealed at least four clues (witnesses) suggesting that he is on the right path. I am reminded of a prominent cable television news commentator that I enjoyed watching because her programming was more of a presentation of facts, she would build her case and present supporting evidence which means she had to study and research the subject matter. I am convinced that if Hollis follows his current path he will not only enjoy his line of work but he will be good at it as well. So what else does the Bible have to say on the subject of gifts? Romans 11:29 King James Version (KJV) says “For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance” interpreted as God will not change His mind about what He has called you to do. The Book of Romans, Chapter 12 and verse 6 says, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us…” Some may argue these scriptures are referring specifically to “spiritual gifts” used in ministry for the Church. Accordingly, I believe as we are the Church then the gifts given to us whether speaking/prophesying (preachers/ evangelist, pastors, etc.), writing, teaching, performing in all forms of the arts,
etc., are used in every walk of life to minister to others and to support the maintenance of life. James 1:17 King James Version (KJV) says, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” We have all been equipped with different measures of abilities (faith/gifts/talents) according to God’s plan for our lives. (Romans 6:12) We should always seek our Creator when we have questions, why? 1. He knew us and set us apart (equipped us) before we were conceived in our mother’s womb (Jeremiah 1:5; Psalm 139:13) 2. He knows every hair on our head (Luke 12:7; Matthew 10:30) 3. He said call unto me and I will answer you tell you great and mighty things you did not know… (Jeremiah 33:3) One of my passions is to help others in the quest of recognizing their gift(s) and encouraging the use of those gifts to help edify the Kingdom of God… According to Luke 6:38, “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.” Finally, I offer the following to help you discover the best of who God created you to be: 1. Always seek God and establish a relationship with Him. 2. The Word of God So…What is Salvation, Really? by Neil Woodard …the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy… Revelation 19:10 How does one become ‘Born Again’, how does one become saved? There are so many doctrines and thoughts and beliefs on how one is to be saved or ‘Born Again’. The truth is, the term that Jesus used was ‘Born from Above’, the translators inserted the word ‘again,’ replacing the word above, thus; You Must be Born Again. The more accurate statement is that you must be born from above. Let’s look at the scripture in Revelation 19:10. The word spirit in the Greek has been translated from the Greek word ‘pneuma’ which means wind or breath or spirit. Breath, our life force is implied here and the life force of prophecy is the testimony of Jesus in much the same manner as being born from above (being born again) refers to a heavenly spiritual transformation from death to life. We who are born from above become living testimonies as it is written (2 Corinthians 3:3) Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshly tables of the heart. Our lives much more than anything that we say become the testimony if in fact we have been born from above. Why? The life force within is the life/Spirit of God which has been given to us from above. This same life force is the spirit of prophecy which lives in every believer who has been born from above. This new life is achieved through water and spirit according to Jesus word in John 3: 3-5 and Jesus word under the scriptural references of Acts 2:37-38. There is a movement in the Church which diminishes the importance and power of baptism. Despite insurmountable Biblical evidence that salvation is attained by repentance and baptism and that baptism is not just a thing to do as a public display, people are being taught that being born again is a matter of confession only and that is an error that must be rectified. When Jesus spoke of being born from above, he gave the formula. It is achieved through water and spirit. Yes confession is a must, it is our repentance but there is more to our salvation than confession. We can’t take one passage out of the Bible and make an entire doctrine out of it. There are scriptures which support other scriptures. As it is written Out of the mouth of two or three witnesses Let every word be established Let’s look at how people are to be saved through a multitude of scriptural references. John 3:3-7

On the day of Pentecost Peter an apostle convicts the crowd in Jerusalem of how they as a people put Christ to death. The people realizing their mistake ask: men and brethren what shall we do? Peter tells them to repent and be baptized for the remission of sin in the name of Jesus Christ…and many of them did approximately 3,000 souls.
Acts 8:35-39
Philip a deacon explains the Gospel to an Ethiopian eunuch. The eunuch after hearing the Word of God confesses his belief in Jesus and is baptized immediately.
Acts 10:45-48 Peter was sent to an Italian group (verses 1-5) and preaches the Gospel to them. As he is speaking the Spirit of God (the Holy Ghost) comes upon them and they begin to speak in tongues. Peter then baptizes them. If speaking in tongues were enough (they magnified God and that was a confession) then baptism could have waited. They still needed to have been born from above by water and were baptized. Romans 6:1-10 Paul an apostle explains the purpose of baptism into Jesus Christ. His explanation coincides with Peter’s statement (Acts 2:38) that baptism in Jesus is for the remission of sins. Romans 6th chapter tells us that we who were baptized were planted/buried with Jesus in death in order for our sin to die. Our sin is destroyed (v 6) and we are free from sin at the point of baptism into Jesus Christ. The death or destruction of our sin results in life with Jesus. Baptism is ultimately a burial of sin and is necessary for our eternal life. 1 Peter 3:20-21 Peter writes that baptism saves us as he uses Noah and the flood as an example of salvation by water. Noah and his family were saved by the water that destroyed the world. He states that baptism saves us by the resurrection of Jesus. Paul in Romans 6th focuses on the destruction or burial of sin via baptism while Peter focuses on our life using the example of Christ’s resurrection, the other side of baptism coming up out of water a resurrected and new being. Finally, as I read the scriptures I noticed that people were baptized immediately. They were not required to wait for two weeks or go to a class about baptism and church membership. They were baptized on the spot when they repented or confessed or spoke in tongues. The prevailing doctrine that promotes confession (Romans 10:9-10) is not wrong, it is just not complete. People have changed their lives for the better and have begun to have relationship with God as a result of confession, however true transformation from death to life and being saved from the wrath of God occurs with the new birth as Jesus said, by water and by spirit. The scripture bears witness to this truth. I interviewed individuals who are actively involved in the Church. They were all asked the same questions and the following is a summary of their beliefs. I spoke to Bishop Walter J. Bell of the Bethel Church of the Apostolic Faith in Harlem, New York. This Church is affiliated with the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ organization. He was brought up in the Church as his father was a Pastor (Elder W. James Bell Sr.) He maintains that salvation is not a feeling it is understanding and knowing God. He also believes that the Church has done more to impact the world. My conversation with Denise Swatts, a Registered Nurse in Florida was very impassioned as she described salvation as being saved from the wrath of God as well as being transformed or made into a new being. Our salvation or ‘change’ has nothing to do with our good works or thoughts because there is nothing that we can do to become righteous.

So…What is Salvation, Really? by Neil Woodard (Continued from page 14) Only God can make one righteous. Therefore righteousness is an act of God, not man. Perhaps her impassioned statements were so strong because in her youth she had been strung out on drugs, helpless, addicted and out of control. Try as she did to conquer her addiction and regain control through a variety of ways via counseling, drug rehab, cold turkey efforts etc., she could not kick the self destructive habits…so she tried God. As she put it God was the last choice after having tried numerous other ways of deliverance. Salvation for Denise feels like she has a chance to make it out of the hell here on earth as well as the eternal hell awaiting those without God. Salvation is an opportunity for real life. With regard to at least one major flaw in the church, Denise a Registered Nurse expressed how the Church was originally intended to be a haven for the weary and a place of refuge and support. Today it is a business focusing on the amount of tithes people can give and how the people are pressured to give money that they cannot afford to give. During offerings Churches promote the $100.00 lines, the 50.00 lines, the $300.00 lines and we’re told we’ll get a better blessing. Then Denise Swatts there is that good old building fund which lasts from one generation to the next often with no evidence of anything being done to the building. Blessings seem to have a price tag on them. Denise said that some people even have to get a part time job just to continue to give to the Church because of various fund raising requirements that put burdens on people. For example Harvest Day requires people to give $300.00 and there are other burdens. This is not what Jesus taught; the emphasis should be on saving souls and supporting the needy more than the paying light bills or other expenses. People are leaving the Church in the same way that they came in, without healing or deliverance. Jesus took his disciples and ministered to others and showed us how that with nothing God will provide our needs abundantly. The positive characteristic of the Church that Denise spoke of is that people are being saved. Religion she maintains is what man says about God not what God says about God. As for the question which asked if everyone is going to heaven, her answer was no. Not everyone is going to heaven. She referred to the book of revelation which clearly shows that some are going to make it and some are not (Revelation 20: 11-15). There are those who just will not follow God’s Word and get to know God’s way and this is why there is a population of professed believers and many unbelievers who won’t make it. Denise summed up the true believer’s love relationship with God. It is all about obedience. Our obedience or lack thereof will determine our love for God and our place with God or outside of God. The level of our obedience will determine the level of life we’ll achieve. Obedience is the one way that we can love God in the same manner that he loves us and Jesus is the example. Jesus knew exactly what would happen to him and yet he willingly obeyed and sacrificed himself. Full obedience (not partial) is the only way to love God fully. My next interview was with Bishop Michael V. Robinson also affiliated with the Bethel Church of the Apostolic Faith located in Harlem. He was asked the same questions and the following is a summary of his answers. Bishop Robinson was raised a Jehovah’s Witness…but it doesn’t end there. His grandmother affectionately called ‘Mama Granny’ took him under her wing when he was a teenager. He was introduced to God and had developed a growing affection toward God in his desire to know more about who the creator of the ends of the earth really is. Mama Granny introduced Bishop Robinson (known then as Mikey) to an Apostolic Church, The Greater Refuge Temple in Harlem, New York, and that was all she wrote. (Continued on page 17) Page 16 of 50
So…What is Salvation, Really? by Neil Woodard (Continued from page 16) Michael’s exposure to the prayer, praise and worship services gave him a fresh desire to know this God rather than the God presented in the Jehovah’s Witnesses Church. Once he attended Refuge Temple, he never went back to the Jehovah’s Witness Church. It was there in Refuge Temple as a result of his Grandmother’s prayers and efforts that Michael V. Robinson found the Lord. He was baptized immediately upon his request after having attended for a while. Bishop Robinson sees salvation as our being saved from the wrath of God as well as being delivered from our Adamic nature. Simply put this means that the separation that exists between God and man because of sin (our Adamic nature, in that Adam sinned) is wiped away and that we become one with God and our sinful nature and mode of living is destroyed. Water Baptism is achieved when we’re baptized in his name Jesus Christ and take on his nature; we become part of the family of God. He referenced Scriptures Matt 7:21-23 where Jesus says to a certain population; depart Bishop Michael Robinson from me ye that work iniquity, I never knew you, because they were not in the family of God despite the works that they will have achieved. Bishop Robinson uses Ephesians 3:14-15 to identify the family of God and identification is in the name and being of Jesus Christ, of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named. Finally he quoted another scripture which states that ‘as many of us as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ,’ (Galatians 3:27). Salvation is not achieved through the sinner’s prayer. So what about the thief on the cross? He went with Jesus to Paradise. That was an extenuating circumstance and conditions like these exist all over the globe. When there is no time or availability for baptism, yes God will save you. The issue is that baptism is seen as secondary, and merely as a public confession than that actual doorway to eternal life itself. Baptism must be accompanied by a confession of repentance and belief in Jesus. A major flaw in the Church is found in the preachers themselves. A lot of pomp and circumstance is evident in the extravagant robes and the fishnet hats (representative of Catholicism and the worship of Dagon) that many of these Church organizations have taken on. There are robes for Bishops, another set for Pastors and another set for elders which distinguish them from each other. Further there are money requirements which distinguish congregation members from each other. In some Churches sitting in certain areas means that you give a certain amount of money. So you may be sitting in the $50.00 section or the $100.00 seats and will be expected to pay according to where you’re seated. The Church has become much more worldly than Godly and separates rather than unifies people in certain aspects. One of the positive things in the Apostolic Churches is the maintaining of the doctrine of God’s oneness as well as the mode of salvation (Acts 2:38). Finally one of the reasons for so many splits in Churches, differences in doctrine and various religions is pride. Leaders disagree and refuse to submit to one another. Differences in doctrine also cause division. Summary: Many of us who truly love God have placed our salvation in the hands of pastors and do not study for ourselves. We often look more to the pastor than to God. We have a responsibility to study the Word for ourselves. Confession and repentance are absolutely necessary and they must be accompanied with baptism in the name of Jesus Christ, immediately and not in the future. Further, our obsession with finances and what we as a people and as a Church have done and are willing to do is not sanctified. Some of us pay out large amounts of money expecting to be blessed…where is that written? Repentance brings a change in God’s way of dealing with us that will fill our needs. Consider Joel 2:12-14 and let repentance and obedience become our main objectives in our relationship with the Lord. All else will be provided for. Family Living a Life of Contentment by Mary Coleman Sometime in the early 1900s my mother’s brother, Robert, traveled from Virginia, further down south to a little place near Lawndale, NC and found love, his beautiful Southern Belle, Ceree Beasley. Ceree is the daughter of a preacher and first lady who were not ready to give their eldest child’s hand in marriage to Robert. Withstanding all consequences, following her heart, Ceree chose Robert and they eloped. I recently talked to Aunt Ceree during our 2015 Family Thanksgiving gathering to make sure she was ok with the idea of publishing a portion of her story and thankfully she gave me the green light. During that conversation, I asked her about the eloping episode. Her face lit up with joy and she chuckled as she recalled that chapter of her life. She said, “yes, and mama was more upset than daddy.” She said her mom told her she was going to send the “man” (assuming she meant law) to get her and Aunt Ceree said her response was “the man (meaning “Robert”) already got me.” Uncle Robert brought her back to Virginia to be his wife and they lived a happy 52 years together until his death March 22, 2004. Now I am not going to paint a picture of a “Father Knows Best” type of marriage, perfect and void of flaws because we are all human and I am sure they had their issues as most marriages do. However, I am painting a picture of a couple who loved each other enough to stand firm through the adversities. This story is about a woman who took her vows serious, and gives literal meaning to “until death do us part.”
home which was always so beautifully decorated in a “country theme.” Aunt Ceree was a master quilter, making quits by hand until arthritis in the later years. She was a seamstress and she still uses her hands to do other hand crafts like crocheting and knitting. She is also a gardener. At age 84, she still loves and tends her vegetable gardens at every opportunity. When she was housekeeping, her yard always looked like the cover of a Southern Living magazine, adorned with all types of flowers and greenery. Oh, I can’t forget she was a great cook too. Family and friends were always welcome in her home and could always find a pot or two on the stove offering that good old southern hospitality. Now, a full time resident of a nursing home, Aunt Ceree continues doing what she loves and she is loved by those who care for her. She tends the vegetable garden as well as the flower beds. When she can’t do the gardening you will find her crocheting and knitting. She goes to Church regularly and she always has a smile of contentment on her face. The question may be asked of me, why write this story? My interest is drawn to a woman who has come through many life changing challenges as we all may at some point in life. I guess I love her story because knowing some of what she has had to endure, she is not bitter and I have never known her to speak evil of anyone. Aunt Ceree has her sound mind and is living a “life of contentment” in spite of her current and/or past adversities. First, she lost her husband (her first and only love in 2004), and then in 2006, at the age of 74 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She fought and won that battle against cancer and then faced giving up her freedom of housekeeping, the comforts of her familiar life and surroundings to move into a nursing home. How is it she has been able to display contentment when so many of us can’t? What is the secret to her success? When many of us fall to a state of bitterness, non-fruit bearing vessels, overcome by hate, unforgiveness, illness, loneliness and all manner of adversities. Adversities we allow to steal our peace of mind, our love, and our joy. In this day and time it is a rarity to find anyone who is

Living a Life of Contentment by Mary Coleman truly content with his or her condition in life and it is a blessing for us that the Bible has a great deal to say about contentment (being satisfied with what we have, who we are, and where we’re going.) Jesus said in Matthew 6:25, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food and the body more important than clothes?” Jesus is telling us to be content with what we have. Actually, he has given us a direct command not to worry about the things of this world. He tells us exactly what to do in Matthew 6:32-33, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.” Apostle Paul was a man who suffered and went without the comforts of life more than most people will ever know. Yet he knew the secret of contentment. (2 Corinthians 11:23-28) Apostle Paul is quoted as saying “Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” (Philippians 4:11) Contentment is a state of happiness and satisfaction. According to the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, the word means “to be free from care because of satisfaction with what is already one’s own.” The Hebrew means “to be pleased.” However, the Greek brings out the full force of the word in 1 Timothy 6:8 and Hebrews 13:5. 1 Timothy 6:6 describes contentment as more of an inward satisfaction; a habit or permanent state of mind, and controlled or influenced based on a particular occurrence or object.
I believe my Aunt Ceree is a good example of someone who exhibits the kind of contentment as described by the Apostle Paul. 1. 2. 3.
She stays busy in constructive ways. She keeps her mind occupied in constructive ways. Her hands are productive.
In other words, she is not idle and she is not that busybody as described in 2 Thessalonians 3:11. Get in touch with yourself and discover the person God created you to be.

The Apostle Paul shares with us the secret of contentment, he says in Philippians 4:12 – 13, I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” (KJV) He adds, “Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have for He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Paul is telling us the secret to “living a life of contentment” is to be pleased with what we have and who we are in Christ. Controversy On Same-Sex Marriage by Elder Thomas Williams, PhD Has God changed (Malachi 3:6)? Do people around the world care about what God says about marriage? Was the institution of marriage created by God or man? The Self-existing Eternal God created the institution of marriage for man because God saw that is was not good for man to be alone (Genesis 2:18-24). It was God who decided to give Adam a helper and a wife. In regards to same-sex marriage, is same-sex marriage biblical? Same-sex marriage will be the focus of this short article. Before the fall, God told Adam (man) to be fruitful, to multiply, and to replenish the earth (Genesis 1:28), but Adam could not do it alone. God felt that it was not good for Adam to be alone (Genesis 2:18). In order to give Adam a “suitable helper,” God put Adam to sleep and performed the first surgery (Genesis 2:21). When Adam woke up, God gave him a companion and wife to help him be fruitful, multiple, and replenish the earth (Genesis 2:21-24). To use the words of my late uncle and pastor, “The woman is the reproducing side of the man.” God did NOT give Adam a boyfriend and/or a husband but a wife! After the fall, Adam “knew” his wife and began the process of procreation (Genesis 4:1-2, 25). Adam and Eve (“the mother of all living”) became the parents of Cain, Abel, and Seth but also of other children (Genesis 5:4). The exact number of children they had is a mystery but according to tradition Adam and his wife had 33 sons and 27 daughters (see Halley’s bible handbook 23rd edition, p. 69). The Bible indicates that marriage is between a man and a woman (Genesis 2:21-24; Ecclesiastes 9:9; Mark 10:1-12); nonetheless, the face of marriage has changed in some parts of the world and in the U.S. For instance, in 2001, the Netherlands became the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage (para. 1) but in 2004 Massachusetts became the first state in the Union to legalize same-sex marriage (para. 21) according to The freedom to marry internationally at website: http://freedomtomarry.org/landscape/entry/c/international. On Friday, June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage in the U.S. and in its territories and made it the law of the land. Accordingly, same-sex married couples now enjoy the same legal rights and benefits as married heterosexual couples according to Supreme Court rules in favor of same-sex marriage nationwide as noted at website: http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/26/politics/supreme-court-same-sex-marriage-ruling/. Two men and two women now have the “option” to get married but that was not always the case. In 1996, thenpresident William Jefferson Clinton signed into law the Defense of Marriage Act, which “defines marriage as a legal union between one man and one woman” (Public Law 104-199). Under Public Law 104-199, same sex-marriages and same-sex unions were not recognized by federal law. The High Court’s ruling of June 26, 2015 overturned the Defense of Marriage Act (para. 21) as noted at website: http://freedomtomarry.org/landscape/entry/c/international. No matter what a court system around the world says, same-sex marriage is NOT biblical but is of human origin and as such is a man-made institution. The Bible does NOT say that “a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall cleave to his husband and the two of men shall be one flesh” (see Genesis 2:24; Ephesians 5:31). The Bible does NOT say, “Wives be subject unto your wife” (see Ephesians 5:22; Colossians 3:18). The Bible does NOT say, “Husbands love your husbands as Christ love the church” (see Ephesians 5:25; Colossians 3:19). Health Compassion in the Health Industry [A Continuing Series] by Neil Woodard Interview with Dr. Betty Perez Rivera, for 2016 January issue of the Remnant Magazine Betty Perez Rivera affectionately known as Doctor Betty leads health education efforts at a major hospital in New York City. The following interview addresses the issue of compassion in the health care industry and the impact of the health care industry on both patients and health care providers. The following represents a discussion regarding compassion in the healthcare system and an overview of this system’s mode of functioning.
Question: Tell us about yourself… Dr. Betty grew up in a diverse a New York City neighborhood. Living there gave her the opportunity to learn about some of the healthcare resources available throughout her community. She was able to observe what people understood about those available resources. In Dr. Betty’s observation many of her neighbors could not see an avenue for asking questions and did not take advantage of the resources that may have been available to them. This drove her curiosity and her interest in healthcare, wanting to answer why this was the case and how to make things better.
Question: What impacted your view on health care? Dr. Betty began to access healthcare services very early in life. She spent countless hours interpreting and seeking information for her ailing grandmother. With every hospital and clinic visit, Dr. Betty began to better appreciate the huge disparities within healthcare services. Of course, at the time she did not know to identify them as health disparities but she knew that all treatments and healthcare services were not the same. Even though more health programs have become available throughout the years, there are still little to no resources to aid individuals in forming connections for better access to the services. There are also little to no mentorship opportunities to help people understand how to utilize their resources. The underserved are still underserved.
Question: Did you learn compassion for those you serve from any of your supervisors? Sadly, NO and this does not mean that compassion is absent in the health care system, however compassion is not the driving force in healthcare and it has certainly and unfortunately not been something she has gotten from her supervisors. Compassion is still not normalized as a systemic approach to care. Dr. Betty finds mentorship and leadership support to be less and less available. In a fast paced and competitive environment, everyone is looking out for their own progression and best interests. Unfortunately, a lot of Dr. Betty’s approach to care and delivery of health education has come from those negative experiences she had with healthcare providers. She always struggled with what was missing and set out to address many of the issues that could lead to better and more compassionate connections with patients and their families. Dr. Betty understands that health care providers cannot take every situation personally because this could lead to early burnout, but she does believe that empathy and a personal touch adds so much to healthcare. It can also improve outcomes and increase trust and overall patient satisfaction in their healthcare experiences. When healthcare providers are focused on providing the minimum deliverables in order to sustain compliance, good healthcare services suffer as those deliverables are so often a far cry from what the patient needs. Compassion in the Health Industry by Neil Woodard (Continue from page 27) The prevailing mindset in health care administration is a balance between quality care, patient safety, and an effective business model which controls costs. Despite this mindset, there is a large disconnect between this ideal system and the common practices in the healthcare industry as a whole which often negatively impact the quality of services provided. Due to this disconnect the focus on the patient’s overall experience of healthcare and how it is contributing to their health outcomes is often overlooked.
Question: Do policy makers need to make adjustments in guiding principles to better serve patients? Policy makers have to remain informed about the elements required for patient safety and quality of care. They must also remain somewhat connected to direct service providers and their patients in order to adequately address concerns and better understand patient needs that go beyond treating the physical body. Policy makers must understand issues related to cultural beliefs, values, and learning styles of their patients in order to create health education initiatives that address the patient’s needs. Policy makers certainly have to make adjustments to the guiding principles of providing good healthcare services. More than the actual policies, regulatory agencies must ensure that the policies are more than just a suggestion. They must be enforceable guidelines that make healthcare organizations and healthcare providers accountable for providing specific standards of care and health education. The business model in healthcare focuses on efficiency. Because many of the guidelines are not currently mandated, smaller healthcare providers/organizations can find increasing resources to address health literacy and health education cost prohibitive. It thus does not become the first priority when providing healthcare services. There is always room for improvement of healthcare policies. There must, however, also be a balance between policy improvement and mandatory enforcement. Accountability includes a swift review of how patients learn health information, how actively they are engaged in their own treatment/care, and how empowering patients helps to improve overall health outcomes. There are penalties for poor healthcare practices; those penalties however do not yet include poor patient engagement and inadequate health education. Example: The Affordable Care Act requires medical care for all. It is based on the premise that every person has a right to be treated equitably and provided with quality healthcare. While many people are now insured, a lot can be said about how different providers and different States interpret the word “quality”. Services are sometimes not easily accessible. Information is hard to find. Many physicians do not accept insurance plans for the medically and economically disadvantaged. This leads to disenfranchising of people and an increase in health disparities. Again, the business model wins over the compassion and equitable care that should be provided within healthcare. Healthcare guidelines are meant to enhance the patient’s experience and improve their care, but without an understanding and commitment to enforcement, the policies will prove to be useless. Dr. Betty maintains that collaborative care needs to occur. This multi-disciplinary approach must include clinical, administrative, and regulatory bodies. Patients need to be assessed holistically and with compassion. They are so much more than a diagnosis or a condition. Patients must be able to access preventive services as well as be treated for illnesses once they are diagnosed. People must learn how to make healthy lifestyle choices and learn what questions to ask when accessing healthcare services. Healthcare providers must take the time to listen. They have to hear what the patient is saying. This means being able to actively listen for fears, understanding, beliefs, experiences, and abilities. Healthcare plans of care must include patient input and incorporate patient’s readiness and abilities. This will make for more compassionate care. (Continued on page 31)

Compassion in the Health Industry by Neil Woodard (Continued from page 29) It’s not to say that compassion does not exist today. There are so many caring and compassionate healthcare providers. It does mean, however, that circumstances and mandatory procedures within healthcare systems make it very difficult. The connection between healthcare provision, health education, and regulation needs to be maintained in order to adequately and positively impact healthcare systems overall.
Question: Would the provision of education be considered a form of compassion? You yourself are a health educator, is there compassion in the provision of education? Health education is a vehicle for helping patients to better understand information in order to make informed decisions. Compassion stems for the methods used to provide health education. Providers must be driven and motivated to help others, using various strategies to connect with their patients. They must provide information respectfully and in plain language so that people become empowered to take the necessary actions. So much of the health information is provided in high literacy, hard to understand terms. So many times patients receive handouts without an explanation or a discussion to enhance their understanding. Compassion comes not only in the information but also in the tone and delivery of the information provided. It requires taking a few additional moments to connect with the patient. It is in asking the patient to repeat back what they believe they heard. It is a combination of strategies that all show that the provider actually cares. Health education can be delivered compassionately and personably. Unfortunately while great strides have been made to address this aspect of healthcare, there are still large gaps between concepts and the application of those concepts. There are many grassroots/community programs, focusing on providing health education and services. There are many individuals that understand the power of compassion and empathy. There are many services that have been developed specifically to serve those that need it the most. Unfortunately, a lot still needs to be done to actually enhance health education to a level that will provide maximum benefits for the patients/communities at large. After an in depth conversation with Dr. Betty she suggested three questions for medical doctors: How long have you been practicing medicine? How has the medical practice changed in the past few years AND also in the past few decades? What are some of the barriers that prevent you from connecting with patients today the way you probably would have in the past? Patients likewise should be asked similar questions; How long have you had an illness or a condition for which you needed to go to the doctor regularly for treatment? Over the last few years AND the last few decades, how has your interaction and service with your doctor changed? What are some of the things that you find missing today which would have been there several years ago? A review of responses to these questions can begin to identify some of the issues that need to be addressed in order to begin to incorporate more compassion into the healthcare system. Constraints in health care may prevent the patient from receiving the compassion which has been intended. (Continued on page 32)

There are many clinicians and health care providers interested in providing good health care and they really want their patients to do well. However, laws, money, research and deliverables get in the way. Medical doctors with the best intentions often do not have as much time to spend with each patient today as they had in the past. Documentation requirements make it so that much of that time is spent looking at a computer rather than interacting with the patient. Technology is important but it should be used appropriately. This creates a disconnect between the patient and the health care provider. It reduces trust and the patient’s level of satisfaction. Dr. Perez-Rivera (commonly referred to as Dr. Betty) has greater than 20 years of experience in health management and health education, providing services to individuals and families from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Dr. Perez-Rivera has been the change agent for many healthcare initiatives, impacting thousands of children and families throughout New York City. Dr. Betty is also the President & CEO of the Institute of Education for the Care of Chronic Diseases (IECCD), an independent organization providing health education and resources to children, adults, underserved communities and health/education professions to address the negative impact of chronic diseases. Prior to NYULMC, Dr. Perez-Rivera was the Director of the East Harlem Asthma Center of Excellence, a Mayor Bloomberg and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer initiative to reduce health disparities for children with asthma and their families. This is similar to how God deals with a family in blessing and cursing…through the generations which follow (see Exodus 34:5-7). Note: that not every child of Ham was cursed just Ca’naan. Sexuality & Relationships Relationships & Marriage by Vivian Booker Marriages in America are changing fast. From a Christian perspective it remains unchanged. Christians still believe that marriage is between a man and a woman, just as God did when he performed the first marriage in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:21-25). This reporter wanted to interview a couple who would be willing to shed some insights on how being Christians and married worked for them. In the way of introduction, they have been married for twenty two years. They have two children. They are both international ministers and have lived all over the world. Their insights, I hope will be refreshing as well a template for young couples to follow. They have asked me not to use their real name so for the sake of understanding. They will be called Edward and Joyce.
A successful marriage takes a lot of work; can you tell me what works for you? Edward: First let me say we base our marriage on the 5c's and they are; Christ, caring, communication, commitment and compromise.
Can a marriage flourish when there a two strong willed partners? Edward: yes as long as they remember the 5c's. Joyce: I agree.
How can partners avoid taking each other for granted, and how do you show each other that they are treasured? Joyce: I try to keep in mind the things he enjoys (his movies, books and meals) I am always slipping little notes to him in the car, jackets and his lunch. I try to always have his back. Let me give you an example of something that just happened yesterday. After church some of the ministers and their wives wanted to go out for dinner. Edward was leaning to go but deferred to me. I reminded him that he had preached twice that morning. He needed to get some rest and refuel. "I have only one husband and one father for my children.� Edward: Joyce is a great communicator. So I have learned to listen and be attentive even if I am just coming in from work. It is important that I am there in the moment not just physically. How do I show her that she is cherished? I make it a point to call her during the day. We try to make time to go out together for lunch at least once a week. It is harder now to do this on the weekends with children. Saturdays are now family days.
Has your marriage grown spiritually? Edward: Yes Joyce: Yes

With Christ being the cornerstone of your marriage, what are the two most important (c's) that you live by and have contributed to the success of your marriage? Edward and Joyce agree that commitment and compromise are the two most important followed closely by mutual caring for each other.
I don't want to put either of you on the spot but I would like one or both of you to talk about the 2c's commitment and compromise. Edward: Commitment - it is like building a house brick by brick. Each brick has to fit or connect with the others. You grow into commitment and grow out of selfishness. Compromise- I must give my wife credit in this aspect of our marriage. I was gone a lot of time during the early years of our marriage building my career. She had to maintain the household and placed her aspirations on the back burner for the family. Now that I have finished with that phase of my career, she is able to go forth with her goals. She is finishing up on her Doctorate Degree. I am so proud of her. Now I am completely focused on what she needs. Let me give you an example, (laughs) Joyce sometimes have to go out of town or the country for her job. Guess who is left holding the fort down (me). I can truly say it is a daunting task but worth it. Joyce: When we were first married, I had a hard time with the compromising. We grew up in two different types of families. Edward came from a family with both a mother and father. Unlike me, my mom was all I had for the first eleven years of my life. My mom had to work two jobs to support us. I even worked alongside her at times. She always told me not to be co-dependent on anyone. So it took a little while for me to understand that I was not alone. I had someone to share everything with. I did not have to do it all myself. Edward: Sometimes you have to be blunt. People coming from two different backgrounds can easily go two separated ways. You must get to the point where it is not you or I but it is "ours". Joyce: My father-in-law put it in perspective for me. When you have differences in mindsets you need to communicate. He showed me a scripture that made a difference, Matthew 18:18-20. You have to talk to the point not around it and get to the root of the issue. Edward: Everything has to flow from the head. God expects the man to be the spiritual head of the family I want to make this point clear to couples out there if you are wondering why your marriages are not working. It is because the relationship is not in proper alignment with God's word. A minister told me a long time ago that "anything with two heads is a monster.
As Christians can you give me an example of a marriage that you use as a guide? They both agreed that Abraham and Sara were good examples even when they went astray from God's promises. They were still united.
You have two children. Share some steps used to get them involved within the household. Edward: Money, (laughs) just kidding, training them early. (Continued on page 35)

Recently, I started letting our son have more responsibilities, like going into store to shop for things for the family, washing clothes, and cooking breakfast on Saturdays with our input. In a few years he will be away at college and ultimately have his own home. He needs to know how to take care of himself. We have a few more years with our daughter.
What scripture have you chosen as a foundation for your household? Edward: We do not have one scripture for a foundation but we do have a few that are our standard; Joshua1:8, John 10:10, Ephesians 5 and Proverbs 31. Joyce: For all the single women out there Matthew 6:33. I did not go looking for a husband, he had to find me. This is a sidebar, just food for thought. Edward and I went to the same church, in fact; he sat behind me on the next pew for a year. We always spoke to each other but that was it. I worked at Wal-mart. He came through my checkout and the rest as they say is history. Some points gathered from this wonderful couple are that many times, we count the wrong things as deal breakers in marriages and relationships when we should each take a personal inventory. Here are few things to think about: RESPECT
Having respect for the world around them, a person like this will have no problem respecting the person they love.
LOYALTY
(team us)-Loyalty is hard to find. It is invaluable. There should be no reason to ever compromise loyalty for anything. When a person is loyal to you, consider this, they are making a sacrifice for you. Respect and loyalty are key in all types of relationships especially in marriage. They will take you further than you can imagine.
LAUGHTER
Life is not going to be all sunshine, rainbows and roses, but if you are going to spend your life with someone, they better have a sense of humor. So you can weather the rough spots.
PROVIDER
providing does not only refer to establishing financial security we all know the saying; "no romance without finance" but it also means giving of yourself emotionally. Give in every area of life. Set out to be a person that freely gives. Remember The Golden Rule.
ACCEPTANCE
Embracing each other’s differences can be tough but it will make you stronger as a couple. People who develop together have a much better chance of having a successful marriage.

Cultural differences Rainbow Cookies by Joycelyn Thomas My most favorite cookies in the whole world are Rainbow Cookies, which are really chocolate covered tri colored little cakes, I luv em’. Second comes the black and white cookie, round and soft, with half of it covered in delectable white vanilla icing and the other half in scrumptious dark chocolate icing. Now, the rainbow cookies are comprised of different colored layers all tasting the same and the black and white cookies iced sides have different tastes and textures. In every recipe the cook or baker starts with separate ingredients, combines them and creates something tasty. Some recipes have the same or similar ingredients but in altered proportions that will produce something different yet still tasty. I’ve always thought of baking and science in similar capacities. The mixture of ingredients/matter combined together to create different things. Ok….you may ask; where is she going with this? Does she need a cookie recipe or what? What I’d like to do is give you, the reader a recipe….of sorts. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Gen 1:1)”. Well, right here we have the original scientist, or baker….for the benefit of this article. “So God created mankind in His own image (Gen 1:27)”. It looks to me like our baker made something. “The Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being (Gen 2:7)”. Now I am no scientist so I cannot fathom the molecular makeup of the ingredients used in this creation. “The Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; while he was sleeping, He took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh and the Lord God made a woman from the rib (Gen 2: 21-22)”. Ah ha, the finished product: God made them Male and Female (Mark 10:6). In that first man and woman (Adam and Eve) that God created were the makings of all of the rainbow cookies of humanity. No matter what color your skin is God made all of us. Diversity was God’s idea. Even in the amazing variety of plant and animal life. People, God’s final creation are diverse. He did not create clones or robots. The creation of the two genders is diversity at its most basic – the sexes are very different, yet complimentary. God delights in the plethora of differences His human creations possess. At times I try to imagine God’s hurt and frustration at us considering how wrong we’ve got it. We have taken the beauty that is and have twisted the meaning of our cultural diversities into discrimination, racism, prejudice, brutality, bigotry, intolerance and cruelty. Since the very beginning of humanity on earth, we have chosen to subjugate entire races because of the color of their skin or their chosen religious beliefs or their station in life and delegate them to cruel and unfair systems because of a perceived self-proclaimed superiority. We have made distinctions amongst ourselves and became judges with evil thoughts (James 2:4). When God told us, “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over all the earth (Gen 1:26)”, He did not mean for us to have dominion over one another. Sin has distorted Gods meaning in our hearts. We were to rule the earth, the fish of the sea, and the fowl of the air, the animals that roam, slither and crawl, but even that, with respect not abuse. It looks like we’ve got everything wrong, upside down and backwards. When will we understand that there is only one race? Indians, Caucasians, Africans, Asians, Arabs and Jews ARE NOT different races; we are all the human race; embodied with varying ethnicities which should be celebrated. All humans have the same physical characteristics (with minor variations), eyes, ears, nose mouth, limbs etc. God loved the world so much that He sent Jesus the Christ to lay down His life for all of us (John 3:16). God created us because he wants His children to know the fullness of His love and abide in it forever. Rainbow Cookies by Joycelyn Thomas How do you repay someone for sacrificing their life? How does one reconcile their past with a loving merciful God? How can you thank the Almighty for not punishing you for your sins, though it is surely deserved? We wouldn’t have enough time or years of life to do so but we can heed the Lords words and live by His example. Leave the worldly caste system at the altar and toss out the anger, the built in fear resentment and suspicions of someone whose skin color may differ from your own. It doesn’t matter how that sinful seed was planted in your heart. Maybe it was systematically learned or learned by first-hand experience or even generational. It is easy to love your neighbor and hate your enemy. God says to love your enemy and pray for those who persecute you (Matt 5:43-44). This is called agape love, a godly love, not human kind-like love. I remember when my daughter was getting married. She lived in Tennessee and at the time I was still in NY so it was an out of town wedding. My dad (gosh I miss him), called me one day a few weeks before the wedding rather irate. He didn’t feel comfortable going to the wedding and was not happy that I had not told him that my son-in-law to be was a white man. Before I responded my mind went to some of the stories he shared with me about growing up in Birmingham, Al. as a young black man. Some of his memories were extremely ugly, horrific and unconscionable so I understood his mind set. If you have any knowledge of the racial climate in America during the 1940’s…..you’ll understand the frame work. I also thought of how my sisters and I were raised before I responded. I told him, “Dad….you and Mommy didn’t raise us to look at a person’s color so it was a non-issue for me”. We discussed how times are different, that I had met her fiancé; David is a wonderful loving Godly man. My dad did come to the wedding and during the years before his death, he had many opportunities to get to know David and my Dad grew to have genuine like and respect for him. Something my dad would have missed out on had he not let go the unfortunate experiences of his youth. My daughter and her husband have a fruitful wonderful God ordained marriage. I love David as if I’d given birth to him and I have two grandbabies that don’t look like they have a lick of black in them. Doesn’t matter to me….those are my two sweet little rainbow cookies! sports NBA Players Contribute To Those in Need by Lamar Battle Daily news wires are awash in stories of school shootings, gang retaliations, shootings of un-armed black men by members of America's police departments and of course the huge and still growing gap between the worlds rich and everybody else. Graduation rates in under-served communities are poor as young people look to other alternatives in reaching the quote un-quote good life. The dollar is strong on the global scale, the stock market up until recently has rebounded and the rich are getting richer mostly through advances in technology and global markets at rates that are to say the least staggering. Poor and middle class people are feeling the pinch but through it all professional athletes and specifically NBA players are stepping up to do their share through charity, advocacy and by being role models for millions of poor worldwide.

LeBron James has given 2.5 million to the Boys and Girls Clubs and has donated another 3.5 million dollars to other charities. Testimonials / inspiration The Bridge by Neil Woodard Depression… what a revolting development! As a young man living in Harlem without a job, source of income or a girlfriend in the 1980’s, I was depressed. It was not about being unemployed with no income or love interest, I had been there before and I had managed. This was different, despite my former accomplishments in life, and I had accomplishments under my belt, I was experiencing hopelessness and a worthlessness that I never had before. I was Born Again… I was ‘Saved’, so why was I feeling so down? Well part of the answer was I had engaged in sexual activity with a former girlfriend that resulted in this spirit of depression attaching itself to me. I never said that I was perfect, being Born Again, I gave into desire, love, lust… choose one. I had never been depressed. I had experienced sadness and disappointment in my life prior to that but never depression. The spirit that was on her was now upon me. This was a whole new ball game. So you’re wondering what does doing the humpty dance have to do with depression or becoming depressed? Isn’t depression biological? In some cases it is passed on from generation to generation (thus biological), in other cases, use of drugs and alcohol will cause an internal chain reaction that can result in depression, but the other type of depression that no one talks about is the kind that comes from an evil spirit of depression. The spirit of depression once attached to an individual is a burdensome weight that affects our thinking, emotions, decision making and our health. It removes all hope and weighs you down with a very tangible sense of hopelessness, and you really believe there is no way out of your sorrow. Ones only thought is of escape, and when laughter doesn’t cut-the-mustard, or being with family is no longer enjoyable and pain, emotional pain is constant and increasing… one begins to contemplate death as a means of escape.
season I would walk to what we called back then the 145th street bridge. It overlooked the East River. I would trudge up the pedestrian walkway moving ever so slowly every day, like a man walking the gang-plank. There I would stare out at the waters and think about jumping into the murky waters. I did this daily. As I pondered when I would do this I realized that the drop into the water was not so severe. I was an athlete and could survive this drop if I had a change of mind in mid air. So I decided that I would walk to the 155th street bridge, and that bridge was much higher and I would have a more difficult task of survival. It took me two weeks to actually DECIDE to go but I did. So I am walking up to the highest point on the pedestrian walkway and the traffic was unusually heavy that day. As I approached the peak, a large tractor trailer truck blared its loud horn while rumbling on and shook the entire bridge. I thought that we were going down. It was as though an earthquake had suddenly hit the bridge and everything shook. My first reaction was to find the closest massive structure to hold onto. I jumped onto it, and the bridge was still shaking…I was afraid to fall in. Then just like that…the shaking stopped. I looked at myself holding on for dear life onto a steel beam that secured the bridge. Even I had to laugh…I n all of my sorrow, I laughed and thought to myself; “You’re Corny…. you don’t want to die, you just want to escape that constant pain…” I was healed of my depression that day and I know that God orchestrated the whole thing. I went home still being needy in my life and realizing my needs, but that depression was gone for good. When I got home I began to think that Jesus must have been laughing his head off along with the angels watching the whole tableau. God healed me. The weight had disappeared, the desire to get away from life by death was gone and I knew that I had to work to improve my life, but I was willing to put the work in. That tangible weight was gone and I think that Jesus was laughing all the way, not maliciously, but laughing still, and I am sure that they had a stomping good time around the throne…
So there I was in Harlem, alone with time on my hands. For the entire spring season and most of the summer “Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.” Romans 11:5

Testimonials / inspiration In the early 1990s, I was driving too fast on one of Richmond’s narrow residential streets. Not only was the road narrow, it was curvy and had deep ditches on both sides. I had two other passengers in the car and a lawnmower in the trunk. Yeah, just think of the explosion had there been a collision. Again, on a Sunday, this time Sunday morning, I was rushing to get a friend to the church property so he could cut the grass before morning service. Driving down Bliley Road going faster than I should have, over a slight hill and there in the middle of the road was an SUV entering the highway from a side street to my right. For a moment it felt like time rolled in slow motion and the driver of the SUV froze. Everything happened so fast. Let me paint this picture, there was a deep ditch and nothing but woods on my left, in the middle of the road was the SUV, on my right, behind the SUV was another car and then there was me! A setup for a T-bone collision – but God said “not so”. When I think about what happen I just feel like shouting because I was spared from death. God took control of that wheel and steered that car to the rear of that SUV, between the SUV and the car behind it and back in the highway escaping impact with the vehicles, deep ditches, mailboxes, woods and all. I didn’t miss a beat and I didn’t look back. Yes, God is real. Mary Coleman
I want to take a moment to share an experience I had when I took my daughter to school. I was driving back home on a very wet highway. I was not driving at a fast speed. Suddenly, I was driving in the air. I was in such a shock. I thought I was a dream or a vision. I had never seen anything like this. I was holding on to the steering wheel and yelling at the top of my voice asking God to save me. It was one of the most out of control feelings I have ever had. I believe God was showing me that he is always with me. I was in the midst of a very bad time in my life. All of sudden the car was placed back on the highway in the correct lane without an accident or harm to me. My God is great and worthy to be praised. HALLELUJAH!!! Thank God for his saving grace even when we are unable to do anything about what we are going through. He is there just open your mouth and ask him to help you. I remember singing this song. The refrain goes like this;"you just ask the Lord to help you, comfort, strengthen and keep you, he is willing to help you. Jesus will carry you through." Praise GOD. Vivian Booker
A long time ago my mother had a stroke. We quickly got her to the hospital. My brother, sister, and a cousin were there. We were there for hours when finally the doctor told me that my mother was not going to make it. He pronounced a death sentence for her by telling me that she might not last the night and certainly would not live beyond the next day. I didn’t accept that. I called all of my prayer warrior friends (about 50) and asked my sister Lori to do the same. We called everyone that we knew who believed in God and asked them to pray for our mother that night. Between Lori and me we must have called close to 100 people. We were there all night long. The next day shortly after my mother woke up she was talking a lot more clearly and was moving her right hand and her right leg up and down with significant movement, not just a few inches but she had a wide range of motion and she was smiling while doing so. I called for the doctor who observed her and ran some more tests (x-rays? CAT scan? Not sure) either way, the doctor showed me the before and after scans. The blood clot on her brain was thick and immovable (before) and overnight the blood clot totally cleared up. He said that he had never seen anything like it and that this was indeed a miracle. Looking ahead
T
he more things change, the more things remain the same. Next month’s
publication will focus on Change, how we change and how God remains the same yet authorizes change. It was God who said in Malachi 3:6: “I am the LORD, I change not!” The context of the statement above is the manifest mercy of God. With change from God in the works, enlightenment, awareness, knowledge and light will be the fruits of God’s labor in our lives. So let’s be clear. God changes circumstances, rulers, times and he changes his mind based upon our actions. In the midst of all of these changes, God himself does not change. We’ll look at adjustments that he has made because of man’s faithfulness and unfaithfulness, so yes God does (appear to) change even though he remains the same. Many times the unexpected circumstances that we find ourselves in are a direct result of choices that we have made and counter choices that God makes as a result for our good or for bad depending upon our choice. Finally if light (knowledge, awareness of God and yes, even his very light) is the intended purpose of God in our lives then as God’s change approaches, our awareness increases and our light shines brighter and these are all scripturally sound occurrences that we should expect. Next month we’ll provide you with a little more joy, a little more depth, a little more knowledge and a little more light. This is just the beginning of a journey that will take you where no man has gone before… yes I said it; rather, I wrote it and while this may not be Star Trek we will take you beyond the earthly skies to the ever expanding mind of God who is always… looking ahead.
