Praising God and Special Thanks by Mary Coleman Issue 6 of the Remnant Magazine is our first issue after restructuring. Today, June 30, 2016, as I am doing the final edits/layout before publication, I had to take a moment to reflect and capture my thoughts as this was not a planned article. I want to share with you just how good God is. I have to give God praise because He continues to provide and confirm that the path we have taken is just where He wants us to be concerning this magazine. Any delay or hurdle is NOT Him saying NO but just a test of my/our faith and trust in Him. Wednesday evening when I arrived home I noticed my internet service was out. I called the service provided and received an appointment for today (Thursday, 6/30) between 3 and 5pm. So I took the afternoon off from my job to be home to meet the technician. To put it simply and to make a long story short, I currently live in an apartment high-rise where the cable wiring is outdated. I will at some point share the story with you about the wiring and my experience over the last three years living in this building. For now, at 7:44 PM I am still without internet because of a miscommunication/ responsibility issue between building maintenance, the cable technician and the building management. Wow, just writing about it is making my blood boil. Bottom line, publishing this magazine issue on time is inevitably delayed. Am I upset? Yes, but I am not defeated! I had initially called the internet service provider to reschedule for Sunday afternoon but decided to cancel that appointment and my internet service. I purchased a Verizon Jetpack/MiFi and by God’s grace the magazine will be published by Sunday evening, July 3rd. I am giving God the praise for connecting people who understand the vision and have zeal to help fulfill the mission to reach the masses through the written word to inspire, encourage, motivate, and help educate them about the more abundant way of living and thinking. I thank God for every person listed to the left and I am praising Him for those who have yet to commit. Many thanks to each person listed for your commitment and your contributions. See the back cover for details of how you can become part of this dynamic endeavor. Zechariah 4:10 encourages us to NOT despise the day of small beginnings!

EDITOR’S

(NOTES)

Elder Thomas Williams, PhD

Only God Himself can touch a man’s heart and give him the strength to forgive people, who mistreated and persecuted him. I have been mistreated and persecuted by strangers and by people that I thought I knew. Like the suffering servant, “I was wounded in the house of my friends” (Zechariah 13:6). It is not easy to forgive others but it can be done through the power of the Holy Ghost. The Lord God touched my heart as a child and gave me the strength to forgive people who mistreated and persecuted me. When I was growing up in post-riot Newark, New Jersey, I was picked on and called names that only the devil can anoint a person to say to someone by a variety of people. Although I did not like it, I forgave them. I see examples of forgiveness in scripture. Jesus forgave the Romans soldiers who beat him beyond recognition (Isaiah 52:14). Before Jesus laid down his life (John 10:18), he said, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). Moreover, Stephen, who was one of the seven (Acts 6:3-6), forgave the men who stoned him for preaching the gospel. Before he died Stephen said, “Lord, Don’t hold this sin against them!” (Acts 7:60, Complete Jewish Bible). God will help you to forgive others if we let him to do it. For example, in 2014, I was sitting in church one Sunday morning and heard the Lord tell me to forgive one of my sons. I called that boy when I got home and told him that I forgave him. Forgiving that boy … About fifteen years ago, one of my nephews brought me to tears with his words and behavior. It took three years to forgive him. Let the God of the whole earth give you the strength and power to forgive people, who mistreat and persecute you. Then, you will be able to say, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.” In a future issue of The Remnant Magazine, I will talk about how God helped me not to hold unforgiveness in my heart.

The Word of God Unleashing God’s Holy Fire by Phil Ware @ Heartlight.org (Submitted by Carl Barber)

“May each soul be rekindled with fire from above.” These words come from one of those "old time toe tappers and heart tinglers" everyone liked to sing when I was growing up. In most of those churches, people didn't talk much about the Holy Spirit. However, the hymn "Revive Us Again" is a rousing prayer. As we sang it, we were pleading for God to pour out the Holy Spirit upon us. We prayed that God would scatter and drive away our darkness. We prayed God would rekindle the flame of holy passion in each of our hearts. We prayed that God's Spirit would rouse us out of our lethargy and spiritual slumber. Whether intentional or not, singing this song was our backdoor to the grace of the Holy Spirit expressing our desire for the Spirit's power to be real in our lives.

I Am a Father Too by Elder Thomas Williams, PhD When I was in my late 20s or early 30s, my father looked at me one day and said, “Boy, you have a lot to offer a kid if he would just listen.” His words then and even now still bless my soul. I did not get married and do not have any biological children, but I am a father because God gave me the “gift” and heart of a father. I father through my ministry and interactions with my people in general but children in particular. Being a father is a role that only a man can play in the life of a child. In my case, I became a father-in-training in the early 1970s when my two younger brothers were born but I became a father when my oldest niece was born thirty-nine years ago. As a father, I enjoy calling all of my children either son or daughter. For instance, one day, I was talking with a student after class. As we talked, I said, “I hope that I don’t offend you when I call you son.” That student looked at me and said, “I like it!” Recently, I spoke with a former student on Facebook and he called me “pops.” Some of my children have gotten angry when I called them son or daughter and quickly retort, “I am not your daughter!” “I am not your son!” No matter what those students said or how those students felt, I am their father because they are or were under my care. I will not go into any details, but will say, like any good father, I have had some tense moments with some of my sons especially when they took advantage of and lied to me. I quickly learned from those experiences that: “A father does not stop loving his son because he tells him lies and plays with his emotions” (Williams, 2015, p.58). Although I am a father, I still like being a son. Before one of my former pastors died, he called me son all the time. One day, I told him that I liked when he called me son. The late Bishop TLW looked at me and said, “That’s how I feel about you, son.” When my father died in 2001, the son in me died until I met the late Daddy Emerette Luckie Polite. God used Daddy Polite to make me feel like a son again. I respect and value the ministry of fatherhood and enjoy seeing fathers interact with their children. Fatherhood is not for the weak and faint-hearted as it is a twenty-hour a day role. I thank the Father of lights (James 1:17) for giving me a father who helped me to become the man and father that I am. I thank God for men everywhere (and even boys) who are fathers indeed. I thank God for my late father and the gift of fatherhood but above all for being a Father to me. Reference Williams, T. (2015). Unleashing God’s Holy Fire by Phil Ware @ Heartlight.org (continued from page 7) (Submitted by Carl Barber) Jesus promised that the Father would give us this great gift of his presence in the Holy Spirit if we would ask (Luke 11:13). Prayers for the Holy Spirit to move among Jesus' disciples has nearly always preceded any great movement of revival or evangelism. This release of the Holy Spirit is much needed today. European churches have been diminishing in influence for more than a century. The American church struggles with decline and wrestles with consumerism as churches compete to offer the best worship experience and amenities to attract attendees. The call to genuine discipleship and sacrifice for the kingdom of God languishes. Meanwhile, many of our brothers and sisters in difficult places face persecution and death for their faith. We need to pray for the Spirit to come and lead our hearts and have Jesus reign over our lives. Part of that prayer can take its cue from the old hymn. We need to pray these words together: "May each soul be rekindled with fire from above."Unleashing the power of the Holy Spirit is a shared experience, a result of the fellowship created by the Spirit (2 Corinthians 13:12-14). This is more than individually praying for the outpouring of God's Holy Fire upon us. Gathering together and asking God to send the Holy Spirit is powerful and important. This was what happened at Pentecost when the church was born (Acts 1:12-14; Acts 2:1-4) in obedience to Jesus' command (Luke 24:45-53; Acts 1:4-8). We see this happening again in the church at Antioch as Jesus' disciples were worshiping and fasting together (Acts 13:1-3). Notice how Paul ties the Holy Spirit to fellowship (2 Corinthians 13:12-14) — see the "Closing Blessing" at the end of this message. The power of the Holy Spirit is often tied to shared worship, fellowship, and prayer. Read through the New Testament and notice all the references to the Holy Spirit. Especially notice the context of shared fellowship! For several weeks, we've been talking about the transformation Jesus promises us through the Holy Spirit (Mark 1:17; 2 Corinthians 3:18; Ephesians 5:15-21). Jesus lays out the process in three movements: 1. Come! 2. Follow me. 3. I will help you become... As we focus on Jesus as our highest priority and in our daily time in Scripture, the Holy Spirit is at work transforming us.

Unleashing God’s Holy Fire by Phil Ware @ Heartlight.org (continued from page 10) (Submitted by Carl Barber) We can invite the Spirit to have a more role by doing what releases the Spirit among us, committing to grow in character and compassion like our Father, while following the Spirit's lead in our dance of life. But there is one huge dynamic still missing from this spiritual growth plan: shared prayer for God to unleash his Holy Fire into our lives. The apostle Paul was an amazing church planter. We can point to many of his practices, strategies, and principles that were important to his success. However, the one we want to embrace today focuses on his prayer life. If we seriously take the beginning and ending of Paul's letters, we realize that he prayed for so many people by name as well as the churches of which they were a vital part (Romans 16:1-20). Many letters begin with a rousing prayer of thanksgiving (Ephesians 1:3-14). Others are stitched together at their seams (1 Thessalonians 2:13-16; 1 Thessalonians 3:11-13) while beginning and ending in prayer (1 Thessalonians 1:2-10; 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24). These prayers are spoken by Paul to the Father for the good of these people and their congregations. These prayers are also shared with those same people and congregations when they met together as Paul's letter was read aloud in their gathering together in the name of Jesus (1 Corinthians 1:1-2; 1 Corinthians 5:4). As they heard Paul's prayer for them, they were invited, together, to live into intercessory targets of these prayers! Ephesians, sent to the churches of Asia Minor, shows Paul praying for these churches. His repeated prayer for them as Jesus' disciples was for God to fill them with the Holy Spirit and with power. Near the beginning of the letter, Paul prayed that they would be able to understand God's great power at work within them (Ephesians 1:17-23). In the middle of the letter, Paul prayed for God to directly

release the strength of the Spirit's might within them (Ephesians 3:14-21, notice especially Ephesians 3:16). He ended the letter by urging them to pray in the power of the Spirit themselves, especially as they pray for him and his mission work (Ephesians 6:18-20). Now, let's imagine what Paul's example could mean, and should mean, for us! We shouldn't limit our hope for God to unleash the power and presence of his Holy Fire on us to a song. While we have many songs today that help us talk about the Holy Spirit, God wants more than our singing. As important as singing is to being filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:15-21), he wants us to pray for the coming of the Spirit (Luke 11:1-13). He wants us to commit to gather with other believers, in big groups and small groups, and ask to be filled and empowered by his Spirit. The book of Acts reminds us that God keeps his promises about sending the Spirit when we pray (Acts 4:23-31). So, let's pray for specific people. Let's pray for specific situations. Let's pray specifically that we can know this power and be filled with this power in our inner being so we can experience God's Holy Fire personally (Ephesians 1:17-20; Ephesians 3:14-21). Most of all, we can pray for "each soul to be rekindled with fire from above" and know that the Father longs to give us this great, precious, and powerful blessing. I can't think of anything more important for us as God's people today!

Final Blessing May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with [us] all (2 Corinthians 13:14).

Health The N.E.I.L. Health Chat© is inspired by our dear friend, Neil Woodard. His desire to keep people connected, provide education, inspire, and lead people in a spiritual, healthful, and thought provoking journey is the premise for this column. This article will provide Dr. Betty’s health perspectives as well as stories, articles, reviews, special notices, and inspirational messages from others interested in bettering their health and the health of others. Join us each month for what we will call the “NEIL” experience. About Dr. Betty

Dr. Betty has more than 20 years of experience in health education and health management. She is a Masters Certified Health Education Specialist and has a doctoral degree in Health and Behavior Studies from Teachers College, Columbia University, where she has received several awards including the Distinguished Alumni-Early Career Award for her contributions to the health field. Dr. Betty has worked in government, hospitals, community organizations, and academic settings, providing health education and leadership to individuals and large groups from diverse backgrounds. She is a college professor and the Founding President and CEO of the Institute of Education for the Care of Chronic Diseases. This organization provides health education and information to communities, organizations, and healthcare providers, working with other professionals to spread special health messages that can help change health policies that affect us all. Welcome to the N.E.I.L. Health Chat with Dr. Betty Perez-Rivera©. We will start this column with Education. It is important to learn why and how you should be well-informed about all aspects of your health. Health Literacy is defined by the Institute of Medicine (now known as the National Academy of Medicine) as “the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions.” This is important because only 12% of adults in the United States have good Health Literacy. It is also important to note that this number includes everyone, regardless of their educational or financial background. Someone with a doctoral degree and lots of money can be just as confused with health information as a person with a 2 nd grade education and little money because it is about understanding Health information. The numbers of people who understand health information are even less when you consider health literacy for older adults because in this group only 3% of older adults in the United States have good health literacy. Mental health issues and physical disabilities can make things much harder for them. When you think about getting bad news such as “You have Diabetes.” and how this will affect you emotionally, you may see how understanding health information can become much harder. We still have a long way to go! Even though healthcare providers understand how important it is to connect with their patients, they are still having some difficulties in getting the right messages in the right terms to the right people.

Why should YOU Care about Health Literacy? Gaining Health Literacy can help you:  Communicate better with your doctor by knowing what questions to ask and what to expect from your discussions.  Better understand the information provided about your health so that you can make decisions that are right for you.  Understand how to take your medications by being able to read the labels.  Know your rights when it comes to signing for treatments and special procedures.  Work better with your families to help them with their health needs.  Inspire others by giving them informed advice which will include speaking with their doctors about health issues. When going to see your doctor or when you have health concerns, make sure to ask questions, find health information from good and reliable sources, and remind your healthcare providers that you want to be an active part of all decisions made about your health. It is your right to get information in a language you understand, which means having information repeated to you if you don’t understand the first time and having the information provided in simple, easy to remember terms. Example #1: Hard word – Hypertension

Easy words: High Blood Pressure

The two terms mean the same thing but with someone with low health literacy, the hard word can be confusing and lead to making bad decisions about your care. Take control of your health by demanding easy to understand terms about your health. It is your right and the healthcare provider’s responsibility.

Health Facts Did you know there are two main causes of aging? 1) too much sticky stuff or garbage (food) accumulates in the body and 2) the body’s garbage disposal system (immune system) weakens as we age making it hard to get rid of the accumulations. That sticky stuff causes: 1. oxidation (rusting) 2. inflammation (painful joints/tissue from wear and tear) and 3. glycation (stiff and sticky stuff accumulating in the blood stream) Too much of these three coupled with a weakened immune system cause fast and unhealthy aging… Health Facts submitted by Johnelyn Hargrove – Information source from Dr. Sears Health and Wellness Institute’s literature and training materials.

My Health Journey by Johnelyn Hargrove I am so thankful for the opportunity to share my journey with you. It’s been a wild one, yet oh so rewarding. My desire and prayer is that someone is inspired to take control of their own health and wellness. Yes, knowledge is power, but action is the key! I know this sounds so cliché, but I have really been sick, or not feeling good or however you want to put it, all my life. My teenage years into young adulthood were the worst. I constantly complained of constipation, stomach pain, severe fatigue and migraines. Never was there a time where I woke and said, “Wow, I feel great today!” I went to several doctors and specialists and was basically told I was depressed with multiple somatic complaints, which means stop complaining all the time and get a life! I was given all of these meds, Paxil, Zoloft, Trazodone, Elavil, Flexeril, Cymbalta, Lyrica, Fioricet and the list goes on and on. I was then diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome which is similar to Fibromyalgia and Idiopathic Constipation. I felt horrible every day. I didn’t feel like going out with friends, or playing with my children, cooking, cleaning, just normal every day routines were exhausting. After a while I was depressed. I actually felt ashamed that I couldn’t muster enough energy to even give my babies a bath at night. I would come home from work and go straight to bed; I go to sleep all night and wake up tired. I was put on more medications; however, no one ever asked me what was I eating or what kind of lifestyle I was living. Well, let me show you what my lifestyle and eating habits were like: Take a look at the photo of my bank statement and what do you see? Nothing but fast food restaurants all day, every day; this was my nutrition. This shows only about 3-4 days from last year. Now this is what my life was like since high school!! Yes, since about 1989. I never ate any vegetables, maybe an apple or banana here and there, and absolutely no exercise. Even, when I wanted to exercise, I couldn’t because my muscles ached and hurt so bad. Little did I know, the Lord was sending help my way, through a former coworker I hadn’t seen in several years. We connected on Facebook, and she invited me to this healthy living party to hear about an amazing product. I laughed out loud and said to myself, “she must be crazy, she know I don’t do those silly infomercial parties.” However, she did know that, but she kept on bugging me anyway; she knew how I suffered in the past. After a few attempts, she tried another approach, and asked if I would come with her to eat free food and wine. I said, “Well, you should have said that in the beginning, of course I will!” That November night was the beginning of a whole new chapter in my life.

My Health Journey by Johnelyn Hargrove (Continued from page 15) That night, there were people there who shared stories like mine and were transformed through this whole food nutrition product, Juice Plus. It consists of thirty fruits and vegetables concentrated in a capsule or chewable. My skepticism is the joke of every party now, I was a harsh skeptic, but I knew my friend, she was genuinely concerned, so I tried the chewables. I was burdened for a while and didn’t want to tell my husband, because I couldn’t afford this at the time; but it was too late now, so I just happily ate my little chewables, like fruit snacks and went my way. Ok here’s where it gets exciting guys. Within less than two weeks, I noticed a drastic difference. One being, I was going to the bathroom on my own without the usual herbal laxative routine. I was like no way this can’t be. Then I noticed, when I came home, I felt like cooking dinner! And while I was cooking dinner, I was doing the laundry and vacuuming and putting clothes away. I was cracking up with the kids all night. Basically, I had energy coming out of my ears. I had never felt so good in my entire life. My coworkers noticed a difference immediately in my attitude and temperament. I was glowing!! Then I started noticing something else. I started craving veggies and fruit and fewer sweets. My food choices were different, I started drinking more water. With this new found energy, I now felt like exercising. I loved the fact I could exercise with no muscle aches or pain in my joints. My migraines eventually went away; I haven’t had a migraine in 8 months!!! My hair and nails grew like crazy, my skin cleared, I lost 24 pounds, honey, I was the bomb.com! So after all those diagnoses, all those medicines, treatments, and yo yo dieting, it came down to I was simply malnutritioned; nutritionally depleted; bad eating habits and an unhealthy lifestyle had taken its toll on my body. Now that my body was getting its needed nourishment, my mind was also changing. I went from being defeated, withdrawn and depressed to being outgoing, happy, smiling, encouraging and motivating. I started to flood my mind with the Word of God, motivational books, cutting out things that just waste time. I went to more healthy living events to surround myself with positive and

encouraging people. The Juice Plus family is a community of positive believers of Jesus Christ, whose mission is to inspire healthy living. I started to set goals for myself and my family. I wanted them healthy too! So when my husband and children saw the changes they were like wait a minute, I want some of that Juice Plus stuff, too!! My whole family takes it every day and we use the shakes now, too. I will not go a day without sharing Juice Plus with anyone and everyone who will listen. I walk at least 4-5 days per week and work out with a personal trainer 3 days a week. I enrolled in the Dr Sears Wellness Institute course to study health and wellness; as of June 21st I officially received my certification in being a Health and Wellness Coach!!! I joined the mission in January by purchasing a Juice Plus virtual franchise, at a minimal cost ($50) and the financial blessings have been life changing, but the best part is receiving so many calls from others about how this has helped their health/wellbeing and that’s what it’s all about. Look, we can’t add one day to our lives, only God knows the day and hour; but what we can do is we can take the time He gave us and add more quality to it. Our aim should be to live long and die short. We see the healthcare crisis going on in our nation. Diabetes, Heart Disease and Obesity is killing our children, not adults, our children! We can’t look to the government for a solution. We are the solution!! Take control of your own health, do it now. Let’s teach our children healthy habits now, before it’s too late.

From the Woodard Archives Choices by Neil Woodard (Submitted by Deloris Bacino) Editor’s Note: This epistle submitted for print in the Remnant Magazine Issue # 6 by Delores Bacino was written by Elder Neil Woodard, a.k.a. Neil-Man, on January 16, 2011 and emailed at 12:04 PM to Delores and a group of others. I recall how Neil would watch the videos of the late John Paul Jackson. He would spend hours replaying the videos of John Paul’s teachings/messages. Now, we the friends of Neil-Man have this opportunity to read and re-read some of his teachings/messages through the Woodard Archives. Thank you Delores for sharing with us what Neil so freely shared with you and others.

“Hey People… Just wanted to share something… I was reading about love, you know, all we need is love… that sort of thing and I came across an article addressing the ability of love to heal cancer patients, and these statements were posted… It is not so much our choices that determine our relationship with God; it is our relationship with God that determines our choices. It is not so much our thoughts that determine our relationship with God; it is our relationship with God that determines our thoughts. There were a lot more profound statements but these two really spoke to me. Love is a miracle, sort of like the manna from heaven that God provided on a Daily basis to Israel while they were in the wilderness, after they had been delivered from slavery, death and hopelessness. Yet they complained anyhow in light of the daily miracle that they received… manna from heaven on a daily basis. Love is our manna from heaven, and it is a daily reality for those of us who love and are loved. I am speaking for myself now but perhaps for someone else who may be reading this… we go through challenges, perhaps in our health, or finances, or in our family or at work and we complain not realizing that we have the power to effectively deal with all of our challenges. Love is that power because love is itself a miracle, a daily miracle. Thus I have complained to God, and asked Him why me? Why must I endure this challenge? Where is the love of God? Sometime I forget that God has already empowered me to deal with every challenge and issue that I have… just like Israel, I complain and totally forget what God has not only done, but what he is doing… now. The choice before me and before all of us is just to love and allow that love to make the difference in life. God gives love and God is love. To choose love is to express the miracle in our being that is waiting to be expressed… without complaining. Miracles are from God and are more accessible than we realize… because Miracles are the only sure thing, better than doctors, lawyers, counselors, pills, logic, laws, policies, man’s advice and so on… In our healing, we will often be required to take a step of faith… some of us will be required to take a leap of faith. Choices… do we choose faith or do we choose to complain? Love is a miracle from God and we all express and experience it in some form or fashion. It is often the more difficult choices that we’ll have to make because of love that will bring about our miracle. To choose love is to choose life, and express the miracle that we need in our lives. Miracles still happen, and the truth is that miracles are more sure than medicine, counseling legal counsel and so on… Miracles are the only sure thing and love is the miracle…” Neil-Man

Youth Make Learning Fun by Hollis Jones I'm taking this summer to learn something new. Summer, in my opinion, is the best time to learn something you really want to know, because in school, you're always preoccupied with cementing things you need to know to pass tests. But in summer, no one really forces you to do anything, which is the perfect time to *really* know something. There's no schedule; you can pace yourself. Can you imagine how much knowledgeable you could be about one topic if you just focused on it for three months? I certainly think that one could develop a real talent that could further their life if they just used some of that leisurely-summer time and practiced one thing. They could learn a useful job skill with those three months of freedom. Here in Richmond, most people I imagine never live too far from a library. Check out two or three books about a field and study up. It can be about something you really like and want to learn to do. Maybe you want to learn a new language, start to paint, play piano, or even develop a new workout diet routine. Thanks to your local library, or the internet, summer break is the time to know the things that you really want to know. I really think that school really turns people off from academia. But this is not the time to be jaded about learning; this is your time to make learning fun.

If you have internet access type “find a library near me” in your search engine – I used Google and somehow, Google knows and popped up a list of libraries near my location. But get this, did you know there is an online service called OCLC WorldCat® where you can enter a library name or part of a name or zip/postal code, state or province and get a list of libraries for that location? This might come in handy if you find yourself in the position of a visitor in unfamiliar territory. Wow, learning is indeed fun!! Thank you to our Youth Director for his perspective on how to make good use of your summer time off. Here’s the URL to OCLC WorldCat® for our offline readers https://www.worldcat.org/libraries.

Challenge to Revival by Mary Coleman If you have not read the article “Unleashing God’s Holy Fire” by Phil Ware of Heartlight.org, I recommend you bookmark this page, go to page 7 and read that article. Once you have read that article, what you read here will have more meaning for you. First, let me say, a few weeks ago my Pastor was talking about Church revival and what it means to and for the Church. The following week I received this article from Carl Barber who had contacted me earlier about writing for the magazine (so I thought). No doubt, when I saw Carl’s name in my email I was excited but soon realized the article he sent wasn’t written by him but by a Phil Ware. Ok, so my excitement faded somewhat and I quickly looked over the article to make sure it was a good fit for the Remnant Magazine and then my focus turned to making sure we could reprint the article without issues. So I inquired and to my surprise I received a quick response to both inquiries validating our request to reprint the article. With permission to reprint I thought I was ready to move on to the next task of getting the magazine ready for its publishing date. Well, don’t you just love it when you think you are ready to move on to the next item on your agenda and you hear this little voice instructing you to do something totally different? I know from experience when we hear the voice of God it is wise to listen and seek understanding. Proverbs 8:32-36 (KJV) explains it in this way:

36

But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

Now what I heard the Lord say in my spirit is “go back and read that article for understanding and then I want you to present a challenge to the people.” Ok, so I read the article and this time I really read it. Reading the article for the second time I started thinking about how God uses people to get His message across, to establish and to confirm His Word. If you recall I said first my Pastor talked about revival, next a contributor to the magazine arbitrarily sends this article (he could have submitted any article but No it was the message to “Unleash God’s Holy Fire”) and then out of all the articles I received, I hear from God to specifically read the article written by Phil Ware! Ok, I did. So now what? If you recall last year there was a challenge frenzy unleashed on Facebook. People were doing all manner of unthinkable things some to raise money for charities others I don’t know – just for the fun of it I guess. Nonetheless, what I am suggesting is not to raise money, not to draw attention to oneself but for everyone who reads this magazine, to ALL who believe, to come together on one accord to commit to prayer, “praying that God would rekindle the flame of holy passion in each of us.” For now, the challenge is “pray for a revival of the church.” As you pray, listen, watch and wait on the Lord!

32

Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways. 33 Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. 34 Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. 35 For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD. “Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.” Romans 11:5 Page 21 of 36

Stop the Cravings! Eat Right! (Reprint from The

CommonHealth Compass) The kids are asleep and you’ve got a great movie lined up to watch and the craving hits: Chocolate. Now. Does it matter that you’ve stuck to healthy eating all week? No. Chocolate! Or, that you haven’t consumed chocolate in weeks? Chocolate! Chocolate! The craving grows stronger every second. Resistance is futile, and soon you’re digging around a cupboard for the bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips you bought for baking emergencies. Soon after, competing feelings of relief, guilt and remorse begin to swirl around your mind. Crisis averted... or was Pandora’s box opened? Some dieters may believe a craving — an intense desire for a certain food — is a signal their bodies need the nutrients that food provides. A craving for chocolate, for example, would signal a physiologic need for more antioxidants. However, a bowl of red beans, which is higher in antioxidants than chocolate, would better meet that supposed physiological need; yet, red beans are low on the craving scale. “It’s an age-old question whether cravings are physiological or psychological,” says Bethany Thayer, RDN, MS. “I’m not sure we definitively know what causes a craving; it could be a little bit of both.” She points out that when children are sick, a bowl of mom’s chicken soup makes them feel better; it relieves congestion and has proven antibacterial properties. And when that child grows up and falls ill, what does he crave? A bowl of chicken soup, not just for its curative powers, but it brings back comforting memories of being cared for by mom. What happens when your cravings become overwhelming and lead to overindulgence and feelings of guilt? When people follow overly restrictive diets or completely cut out groups of foods, cravings can become more intense and can lead to a vicious cycle of indulging, overeating and guilt. A diet that allows small amounts of foods you enjoy — even high-fat, high-calorie foods — will be easier to maintain since you aren’t eliminating that food outright from your life. If you sometimes crave chocolate, keep some dark chocolate on hand. Dark chocolate contains phytochemicals that may aid in the prevention of heart disease and may decrease the effects of sugar on your teeth. But enjoy it in moderation. Calories do add up. When looking for dark chocolate, read the label to make sure that cacao is the first ingredient on the list rather than sugar. Stop the Cravings! Eat Right!

Here are other tips for handling food cravings 

Put your craving off. Tell yourself you’ll deal with the craving in 20 minutes. Food cravings are typically short-lived, and while the desire for chips, chocolate or cake feels overwhelming now, it will wane, especially if you can find a healthier food substitute or distract yourself.

Choose alternatives for your cravings. Yearn for potato chips? Buy a brand that’s low-fat or baked. Desire something crunchy? Skip the chips: try fruit or a salad packed with crisp greens and veggies. Want something sweet? How about baking an apple or even roasting some veggies? Roasting brings out the sweetness in many foods.

Buy single servings of foods you crave. “Instead of buying a whole box of cookies,” says Thayer, “buy just one cookie from a specialty bakeshop.”

Schedule your snacks. Plan for nutritious snacks to prevent between-meal hunger. Keep portable, healthy snacks in your desk, backpack or car.

Take a walk, work on a hobby or call a friend. Thayer points out that what you really may be craving is social support. A chat with a sympathetic friend can get you through a tough craving.

Keep a craving journal. Note the time of day your craving appeared, how long it lasted, the food you craved, and how you handled the situation. Thayer says you’ll start noticing patterns so you can be better prepared to handle cravings in the future.

SPORTS Missed Opportunities by Rainer Coleman I’m back, as always let me begin by giving honor to God, through his grace all things are made possible. I was given this time around free reign to go in any direction I wanted to so bare with me, hopefully I can tie it all together for you nicely in the end. The late Neil Woodard whom I had the pleasure of meeting what seemed like a week before he died, made an indelible impression upon me. Back in April, my immediate family and some friends gathered in Fayetteville N.C. at my eldest sister’s house to celebrate what to me was a combination of Home Coming and Birthday party. Neil attended and I felt an immediate connection to him through his love of sports. I could since in his voice that competitive fire still burned. Listening to him was like looking in the mirror and seeing myself. I could tell he felt he had unfinished business on the basketball court and if he could have only turned back the hands of time and done some things differently who knows how things would have turned out. I guess if you really think about it, no matter what level of success a person reaches in whatever field they choose looks back and say “man, if only I had taken it more serious”. Now let’s define that word “serious”…it could mean anything that can and is done to make sure someday you are not sitting back reminiscing over what could have been. As we sat talking at different times during the weekend gathering we had many conversations, at times he listened to my life stories and I his, the conclusion I came to was he and I were very much alike in many ways. When Sunday came and we were all saying our goodbyes, Neil pulled me to the side and gave me what I later felt was a “thank you for listening and relating” goodbye, for a very obvious reason it has stuck with me to this very day. Lebron James is the perfect example of what happens when you are blessed with god given talent, the mental toughness to pursue your dream and the ability to recognize the golden opportunity that has been placed at your feet. I remember when I was in high school and crossroad decisions had to be made, my father told me “opportunity only knocks once, make sure you answer” at that time it went in one ear and out the other. Man if only I had listened and taken it more serious, sounds familiar doesn’t it? Sooner or later we all do a life assessment of where we are and where we should be; sometimes we base it on friend or family comparisons and sometimes solely on “missed opportunities”. In the end it’s okay to look back on the things that maybe “you” should have done as long as it doesn’t consume you. Neil and I spending time together on that weekend was like therapy. It really didn’t hit me as being that until long after, but I could tell from our last conversation that’s what it was for both of us. The old phrase “Life’s too short” is often used by people who have been through some trials and it would be wise to heed that saying because time really flies when you get caught up reminiscing about what could have been, love ones pass on, children are born, people change…time does not stand still. God has a plan for all of us and what may seem was meant for you may just be a waypoint not a stopping point to what he has planned for you down the road. Be Blessed… Stay Blessed!

A Message from Uma Glow

www.umaglow.com

Hello Remnant Magazine friends! I’d like to introduce myself. I am the owner and CEO of Uma Glow, LLC which is a division of UMA Enterprises, LLC. My slogan is “Let Me Help You LOVE You” by taking care of yourself from the outside in. It is a commandment to honor the vessel that God has given so you can be the best for your family, friends and anyone else that needs you. We are all exposed to chemicals every day through our environment, but we have a choice in what we put into and on our bodies. I encourage everyone to choose a healthy diet with less processed foods. Think about what you last ate. How close was that meal to its natural state? The further away you get from the natural (loaded with ingredients that you can barely pronounce), the closer you get to living less of a quality of life in the future. The same goes for the products you use every day that are applied to your skin and hair. But the good news is you can make the choice to love yourself as God would have you to do! Let’s start with the wonderful products that my business produces. My products are manufactured with certified organic ingredients, fair trade ingredients and essential oils. We do not use any chemicals, fillers or toxic materials. I’ve researched each ingredient used in my products which can be reviewed at your leisure on my website www.umaglow.com. So let me help you love you by using my wonderful products made with love!

Testimonials A Spiritual Change by Missionary Rebecca Seabrook Life is full of changes. To be alive means that we are in a constant state of change. Sometimes change is gradual and expected, such as aging gracefully and other times change can be abrupt and unexpected such as going to work Monday morning and finding out that you no longer have a job. Change is inevitable. We can accept it or resist it. Accepting inevitable change may cause life to go smoother but sometimes we need to move out of our “comfort zone” in order to have positive change or experience growth. Resisting does not mean that the inevitable change will not come. It just means that you choose to engage in an unwinnable struggle. On the Damascus Road many years ago, a young religious enthusiast had an encounter with Jesus and his life was forever changed. Jesus told Paul that when God is trying to bring about a change in us, it is useless and dangerous to offer perilous resistance. When I was a young woman, twenty- one or so years old, I decided that I needed a change in my life. Three years earlier, I graduated high school, worked my first summer job (first job ever for that matter) and enrolled in one of the area black colleges. To me life was so boring and predictable that I felt like I was suffocating. I was in desperate need of change! I left the pursuit of a college education, left my family and friends, left the Church that I had grown up in and all else that was familiar. I moved to San Diego, California - a place where I did not know anybody and nobody knew me. I needed to find out who I was and what I believed about life and God; I needed my own identity and my own belief system. I needed fresh eyes on me; eyes that did not know my history, good or bad. And I needed fresh relationships that were formed base on who I was and not on any outside opinions or influences, good or bad. It was here in San Diego that God began to reveal Himself to me personally. God’s revelation to me began when my husband unknowingly rented a room for us from a Voodooist. She would “mix potions” for anyone who in her mind had rejected her or crossed her. She would sometimes even ask my husband to drive her to places to cast her potion on some unsuspecting victim. Later, when I turned down her offer to “take me under her wing since I did not have family there”, she was insulted. Without knowing it, she started a plot to harm me. She tried to find hairs from my head that may have been left behind after a combing. After many of frugal attempts, she commented to me on how unusual it was to leave no hair in the bathroom after use. With my curiosity peaked, I wanted to know why the interest in my hair. I found out that she need something of mine to use to in her “potion” that would be designed for my harm. Those family members and “church people” that I tried to get away from prayed God’s protection over my life. The trap that she tried to set for me ended up being a trap that caught her. When all of this happened I was not saved, even though I had been bought up in “the church.” God really got my attention. He had protected me from unseen dangers. Like Job in the Bible, (Job 42:5) I had heard of God with my ears, but now I see God with a spiritual understanding. This began the change in me from a bystander to a believer. Testimonial Snippets Wait on the Lord, Part 1 by Stacie J. Some time ago, when I was asked, if interested, to provide my testimony for the Remnant Magazine’s Issue #6; without hesitation I said Yes! I thought, this magazine is such an inspirational form of social media communication, “I can really come up with something powerful!” If you didn’t catch that, the key word there was I…Anyway, I couldn’t have been more wrong! As days turned into weeks, I tried to think of a topic, a theme and even a title to help develop my writings; but continuously with no success. Not wanting to disappoint the Co-Editor, (my aunt) Mary Coleman and the rest of the Remnant team, by not following through after my commitment to submit my testimony; I decided to message Aunt Mary, while I was in route to my “new job,” (but that’s another story, that shows how good God is… Stay tuned in for Part 2!), anyway…. I wanted to see if it was past the deadline for submission. While waiting for her response, I prayed aloud…”Lord, I need your help!” Now…if you believe in the power of prayer, and you know God answers prayers; then you also know that the results don’t come in your desired time frame. You have to “wait on the Lord.” I’ll continue…so, as I reached my destination and proceeded to get out of my car, just then, I received my response. Not from Aunt Mary, but from the Almighty! “Wait on the Lord” was spoken into my spirit LOUD & CLEAR! “Reference this instance.” “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24 In conclusion, I am thankful to have the opportunity to share just 1 of many blessings God has bestowed upon me, though I am undeserving! As in the beginning of my testimonial, we may start out with a great plan…but remember to put God first; He answers prayers that are from the heart and reflect His will. Lastly, you must believe and “Wait on the Lord!”

God Provides (Part 1) by Elder Thomas Williams, PhD I became progressively ill during a school year but still went to work. I had a hard time breathing, staying awake, and keeping my head-up but still went to work. One day, I dosed off in class for a few minutes. Instead of the co-teacher asking me after class if I were okay, she sent an e-mail to a vice-principal who reprimanded me the next day for falling asleep in class. Although I felt sick to the point of death, the Lord gave me the strength to get up every morning. Surprisingly, I was ontime and the Lord gave me the strength to get through the day. I was weak and had a hard time concentrating but still worked. I felt the illness creep up on me in August 2007 but by November 2007 I had become progressively sicker. On Monday, November 12, 2007 (Veteran’s Day), I went to see a doctor around the corner from my apartment complex. The doctor did a thorough examination and ordered ex-rays of my chest. After she reviewed the ex-rays, the doctor told me to go straight to the emergency room but would not release me from her care walking. I called a then-friend who came to the clinic and took me the emergency room. After being admitted, I spent two-and-half days in the hospital before being released. I could be wrong but felt as if I was kicked to the curb (discharged) because I did not have any medical insurance. When I left the hospital, I was STILL sick! Because substitute teaching was my primary source of income at the time, a few days after being released from the hospital, I went back to substitute teaching. Subbing was hard. I had a hard time breathing and walking up and down the stairs in the schools. I took medication before I went to work and ran back and forth to the bathroom in-between classes. Within a week of being released from the hospital, my health took a turn for the worse and I slid down-the-hill. For instance, at night, I had hot and cold sweats. I could NOT sleep or get comfortable in my bed. Because I had pneumonia, I felt as if I were going to drown off of my own bodily fluids. To say the least, I was miserable. One day, while in class, I coughed up mucus and noticed a little blood in it. As the day progressed, I just coughed up blood. I knew that I was in trouble but like most men I did not tell anyone. I just got up the next day and went to work. Three days later, I went back to the emergency room. I was readmitted within ten minutes and was hospitalized for approximately twelve days. When I got out of the hospital, this time, I resigned from substitute teaching and drew unemployment until the benefits ran out. Either before or after my unemployment benefits expired, I looked for a teaching position at one of the colleges in town. The Lord blessed me to get hired to teach two sections of general psychology at a certain college. I was glad that I was physically strong enough to go back to work but going back to work was hard. The preparation, standing on my feet, lecturing, and dealing with some unruly students almost sucked the life from out of me. Dr. Thomas Williams is a seasoned substitute teacher and college professor.

Looking FORWARD

“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down on the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrew 12:2)

P

eople look for “someone” be it a president, a king, a queen, a prime minister, a court system, an

attorney general, a health care and education system, an Iman, a pope, a state official, a federal official, a tribal elder, a chief executive officer, a religious leader, a mayor, a college professor, a world leader, and a political party to help them. The only One who can deliver and help us is "the stone which the builders rejected" (Psalm 118:22). Jesus Christ (Yeshua Messiah) of Nazareth as the psalmist declares is the stone which the builders rejected and is the only One who can help you and me. Yeshua is a tried and precious stone and like the prophet Isaiah declared a sure foundation (Isaiah 28:16). There is no one in heaven, on earth, under the earth, or in the sea like Him. The late pastor Andre Crouch summoned it up nicely in one of his songs: "Jesus is the answer, for the world today. Above Him there is no other. Jesus is the way." Can you hear my voice and understand what I am saying? Look to Jesus of Nazareth for everything that you need. In the July 2016 issue of The Remnant Magazine, I will continue to write about the change of God but do hope to get some written testimonies from our readership about what you are "looking unto Jesus to do" for you. As an ambassador of Christ (2nd Corinthians 5:20), I am looking unto Jesus to bring ALL nations of the earth to repentance according to 2nd Chronicles 7:14.
