EDITOR’S

(NOTES)

Change! We are still in the midst of significant change. In America the population is split on who to vote for in both the Democratic and Republican parties. Police brutality continues on unarmed people of color with no justice being served and people are reacting to that. Despite our medical advances there is no (medical) cure for cancer or depression (but there are those who claim that they have been cured) and the seasons are changing. What does all of this mean? Change is a part of life and we have to embrace it whether we like it or not. We grow from toddlers to elementary students to teenagers to young adults and eventually we grow old and pass the baton. Change is not always to be resisted; quite often we really should go with the flow. This however is not a black and white statement as are other proposed changes need to be resisted. The theme for this month’s magazine comes in the form of a question; how do we effectively navigate change? The articles within this month’s issue will address the effective navigation of change. It is not always about resistance nor is it always about acceptance but whatever the need is for you, change in whatever form it presents itself will require an adjustment.

Magazine is a step toward being still and listening. Your next step after that is to pray and listen some more. Embrace change, there is a lesson in change and these lessons are designed to heal, change and develop us. The winds of change are the seeds of creation and we become a new creation through the virtues of forgiveness in the season of our change. Forgiveness is the greatest act of creation for us. When we forgive we create a new world within ourselves and within those we forgive because forgiveness results a fresh new start and new opportunities which are key factors that help us to effectively navigate change. PEACE TO YOU!

Personally when we allow God in to guide us into making that adjustment which results in effective navigation of the agents of change, the result will not only be a healthier change but peace where perhaps no peace was possible. The articles in this issue will deal with effective navigation of change brought about by depression, history, relationships and the word of God to mention just a few. When change occurs as it is occurring now our first response should be that we become still for a moment. The word says; ‘Be still and know that I am God.’ Sometimes God himself brings unusual and unexpected changes that we just don’t understand or agree with. As we take the moment to adjust (be still), our being still is really about listening. youth Will it Ever Be the Way it Used to Be? By David Thornton More than likely it won’t. Will it ever be the way it used to be when I went to grade school and you had to wear a shirt and maybe a tie if your parents could afford one? Will it ever be the way it was when you wore shoes to school instead of sneakers? Will it ever be the way it used to be when you wore a belt with your pants and the word sagging meant something that was hanging down too low not your pants; which as you know has become a chic way of dressing for our young generation. Will it? In this day of True Religion and teenagers who have no clue on what it is to wear appropriate attire I believe those days of proper attire are gone. Lost to the Forever 21’s and the H&M’s that have taken over the fashion world where teenagers can go on and purchase cheap clothing at a fraction of the cost in comparison to what the manufacturer pays for that piece to be made in some of our third world countries. At one time you could go into Macy’s, Lord and Taylors or even Delancey St.(New York City) and purchase good quality clothing at a fraction of the cost and have clothes that would last more than just a year or two and look damn good wearing the item. Once was the days when you knew that you had to have at least three suits in your closet. One for a job interview and one for that special occasion and one for church if your parents made you attend; it was called your Sunday best. And that same suit would be the one you wore if you lost a loved one. For the last few decades I have seen the deterioration of the fashion world with its inexpensive clothing that lures our young to buy. They want to be fashionable at an inexpensive cost which has brought about manufactures making clothing that lack the quality and gives our youth a false sense of what fashion is really about. It has drowned the days of Couture and designer quality fashion which at one time you could only get from stores and boutiques such as Bloomingdales, Barney’s , Lord and Taylor, Bergdorf Goodman and better department stores. This article is intended to focus on our youth specifically the black youth of today that are in the urban settings across this country. However as you well know there are youth other than black that like that urban look and have taken on the same perspective ; wearing True Religion products, Timberlands and having that thug life look and not even aware that there are other looks that are more appropriate in society today. I stand to say that you can and should wear True Religion, Timberlands and any other clothing that your heart desires however it is also important to have a diverse sense of fashion where you wear cardigan sweaters Khaki’s with a blazer and of course the ultimate a suit a tie and a pair of shoes that are shined. There are teenagers out there that have no idea what their shirt size is or what their waist size is. If I were to ask a teenager what his neck size is he probably would say small medium or large, or the ultimate answer, I don’t know. You should be aware that there are events and occasions that require that you wear a suit and a tie with dress shoes; not jeans and a shirt that is outside your pants. My mom always told me that a man should have three suits in their closet, a blue suit, black suit and a gray suit so that you can be ready and appropriate for any occasion. A man should have a variety of ties that will go with each suit and at least two pairs of dress shoes. Will it Ever Be the Way it Used to Be? by David Thornton (Continued from page 9)

Being a well-dressed man and putting that full ensemble together… you will grow in age and your fashion sense will move from community based stores to boutiques and finer department stores… Open your mind young man and start this education now so you can feel the passion of fashion in its true sense. Just a little knowledge in order to start you on your way.

David Thornton is a Fair Hearing Representative and Local Base Trainer for a Human Resources Administration. 26 years of employment.

I have had teenagers call me at the last minute to ask me about where they can go in order to buy a jacket or a suit because they have a job interview. They have called to say that someone close to them has passed away and they have to attend the funeral. Sure you can go to a funeral just to pay your respects and wear anything your heart desires. I have seen people come to a funeral with a Tshirt, jeans and Timberland’s. I have had teenagers that need a suit because they got a job and need to go and buy a suit, shirt, tie and a pair of shoes in order to be appropriately dressed in order to go to the interview. When they call I always say to myself in a time where it is evident that men that wear a suit and tie and dress shoes look more professional and neat than that guy in a pair of jeans and a pair of Timberland’s. I always ask myself why these kids buy all the latest gear which costs sometimes more than a suit, tie, shirt and a pair of shoes depending on where you’re shopping and they won’t purchase what they need in order to be ready for that job or special occasion.

“Fashion is not necessarily about labels. It’s not about brands. It’s about something else that comes from within you.” Ralph Lauren

This phenomenon will always baffle me and make me ask; will it ever change and is it too late to set the example for some to follow? Only a few will take notice to how well they will look when they are well dressed. Once that young lady takes notice and compliments you while you’re walking down the street as her head turns, then that is when you will see that maybe this is the way to go… “Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.” Romans 11:5 Page 11 of 56

Easy to Criticize by Elder Thomas Williams, PhD Before our precious brother and President leave office, I want to go on record and share a few of my feelings and my thoughts about him. No matter how smart or talented a mayor of a city is, a state governor, a member of Congress, a state senator, a state legislator, a city commissioner, an alderman, a college and/or university president, and a chief executive officer of a large business that person is “not” the president of the United States.

(In honor of and written as a tribute to our precious brother, The Honorable President Barack Hussian Obama) Recommended Reading: The Book of [the prophet] Daniel, chapter 4, verses 19-33

I believe that the only person who may be qualified to be the president of the United States is a former and/or expresident of the United States! Theoretically, a former president should have the know-how and the experience as to how to do the job. I believe that the president of the United States learns how to be president by being president. Hence, the president of the United States becomes the poster child for the power of OJT—on the job training! It is easier to criticize the president of the United States than to be the president of the United States. Some people have criticized our current President and claimed that he hasn’t done anything for America. Others claim that he has made the country worse, has no accomplishments, is weak, and is a liar. I am troubled when I hear people criticize our President especially when the Bible says: “Thou shall not speak evil of the ruler of thy people” (Acts 23:5).

“And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:” Daniel 2:21 “For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.” Psalm 75:6-7

The United States, with the expectation of when the South ceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America, has had only one president at a time. The president of the United States is the nation’s chief of state, chief executive, chief diplomat, chief legislator, chief administrator, party chief, chief citizen and the very face and voice of America. For the United States armed services, the president of the United States serves is their commander-in-chief. As chief diplomat, when the president of the United States speaks, the United States of America speaks. Historically, all of our presidents were white men. The Honorable President Barack Hussein Obama, however, broke the racial glass ceiling when he was elected president of the United States in 2008 and subsequently reelected in 2012 because “God chose” him to lead the nation. “Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.” Romans 11:5 Page 13 of 56

The Word of God Again the Change of God by Neil Woodard …but let him that glorieth glory in this, That he understandeth and knoweth me, That I am the LORD which exercise Lovingkindness, judgment and righteousness In the earth for in these things I delight Saith the LORD… Click to see video

Jeremiah 9:24 (KJV) Forgiveness is a force which brings change. Forgiveness is so strong and powerful that without it, our prayers cannot reach God. Forgiveness is a change of mind which changes the environment of the soul and creates a whole new world for the forgiver. Forgiveness liberates the forgiver and the one forgiven. True forgiveness begins with knowing who God is as he is the ultimate example of forgiveness and our motivation is to be like him. The scripture above suggests that those who know him are aware of his  Loving-kindness  Judgment  Righteousness

The problem with mankind is that we think that God is too quiet or that we are in control more than God. Mankind in general has very little awareness of God and that is why God is in the act of revealing himself via change. In light of God’s change and that means specifically the changes that he will bring; let’s examine the three characteristics of Jeremiah 9:24 and how we can know exactly what to expect as he brings The Change of God into manifestation.

Loving-kindness For God so loved the world That he gave his only begotten son That whosoever believeth In him should not Perish, But have everlasting life.

John 3:16 God loved the people in the world. He had set up a standard of righteousness once sin entered into the world. The standard of righteousness for mankind required a blood sacrifice. This was expressed and achieved all throughout the Old Testament. While the blood of innocent animals such as bulls, goats and pigeons were used to typify the covering of our sinful nature, it wasn’t enough. Only the blood of God was pure enough to remove our sin. Our responsibility is to believe on him. God (The Father) at the end of the Old Covenant sent his son Jesus, himself being God with the pure (Continued on page 17) “Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.” Romans 11:5 Page 15 of 56

The Change of God by Neil Woodard (Continued from page 15) blood of God flowing through him, to be the sacrifice once and for all for the salvation of those who believe. That is loving kindness and there are plenty more examples of God’s loving kindness all throughout the Bible and all throughout history. Jesus’ death and resurrection was a powerful exercise of God’s loving-kindness. God sacrificed his son and we are often asked to sacrifice time, money which we can afford it and a listening ear etc. Loving kindness is also an experience. Those in right relationship with God will experience his mercy, his presence his guidance and revelation. When we know God, we know God. Therefore change is to be expected…unexpectedly. The details of change shall be revealed to those who are engaged in a love relationship with God.

Judgment Surely the LORD GOD will do nothing But he revealeth his secrets to His servants the prophets.

Amos 3:7 There are so many scriptures related to judgments of all kinds that it makes me realize that knowing God is a lifelong process. The scripture in Amos gives us a glimpse of what it means to know God. It is the receiving of revelation from God. This type of revelation can only be known by the people of God. God reveals the unknown and the unforeseen to his servants the prophets. Human wisdom and foresight cannot predict what God has in store for the future, or even the present. Unforeseen circumstances in a day can change the course of history. Judgment, the term itself for me conjures up images of God’s wrath and resultant destruction whether on a personal or communal or even a cumulative level. As we explore the wrath of God (a topic that no one wants to deal with, its real) let’s first review a few scriptures that shed light on God’s character. …repent and turn yourselves from all Of your transgressions so iniquity will not be your ruin …for I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth Saith The LORD God, wherefore turn yourselves and live

Ezekiel 18:20,32 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise as some men Count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward Not willing that any man should perish, but That all should come to repentance.

1 Peter 3:9 …Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity And transgression and sin and that will by no means Clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers Upon the children and upon the children’s children Unto the third and fourth generation…

The Change of God by Neil Woodard (Continued from page 17) God’s character first is mercy, this is who he is. Everyman is given the opportunity to come to God in repentance, in honoring God, in love and even when we are faced with tangible needs. We are given our entire lifetime to come to him. So…as I see it according to Exodus 34, there are really two types of people. Type one are the ones who are forgiven and forgiveness is based upon our repentance and a desire for him in our lives. Then there is type two and this is the population that will ignore God and continually disregard the revealed will of God. Not only do they suffer, their generations after them suffer. The righteous will be shown what judgments are ahead while the unbelievers are blind to what’s ahead. This also reflects the Change of God because upon careful review of these scriptures, God will have provided an opportunity for everyone to escape the wrath ahead. The change from God is an expression of wrath for one population of people while it is also an expression of safety from wrath for another population. The greatest example that I can think of is the flood in Noah’s time. The flood destroyed earth’s inhabitants and saved Noah and his family. The world was wicked and God decided that it was time for a change, so made a change. Noah was shown that it was going to rain at a time on the planet when no one had ever seen rain. The trees, plants and flowers were watered by the dew which occurred regularly in the morning. Rain was at that time something new and never before seen or experienced. This change was a revelation and a warning to God’s people.

Righteousness And it came to pass, when Moses came down from Mt Sinai with the two tables of testimony in his hands, When he came down from the mount, That Moses knew not that the skin of his face shone While he talked with them. Exodus 34:29 The change that God is also bringing about for his people is light, a literal glow. On the day of Pentecost the disciples spoke in various languages as literal cloven tongues of fire danced just above their heads. Moses, upon returning from talking with God had been given some of God’s presence and that was reflected in God’s light. Part of God’s change will be the expression of light on his people. As God’s people commune with him they will begin to glow according to their relationship and placement by him. Some who are very close to God will shine brightly while others will maintain another level of glory with each level of light or glory being different from another. This light will distinguish God’s people from other people and as the Change of God is presented on the planet we will see for ourselves the differentiation between God’s people and those who are not.

Laurie began as a studio artist singing for an independent label which produced commercial jingles as well as some original music which was ultimately aired over the radio waves. People began to take notice of her when began to perform live. Even her live performances and her outstanding vocal talents are the result of her family history. She is a story teller because her mother was a story teller. To this day she can tell the stories that she created for her nieces and nephews. On the stage her dominant presence is in part a result of her acting out the story of the song. Laurie sings as though she has actually lived through the story of the songs and for the most part, she has. Laurie is an R & B vocalist with experience in the fusion of Gospel and Blues and has been making a statement and musically telling our stories for over 20 years. By the way her stage name Aunel is derived from her relationship with her nieces and nephews Aunel stands for Auntie Laurie.

Family Example of a Generational Blessing by Neil Woodard We often hear the terms generational blessing and generational cursing used in the church quite often. We are even told that we can break a generational curse. I would like to present to you an example of a generational blessing. In some way it is like a longitudinal study of how God works in a family that He has blessed. He often blesses a family line because of the faithfulness and relationship of one individual. I attended Saint Paul’s College a long, long time ago in a place far away, Lawrenceville, Virginia in the mid 1970’s. The accountant for the school was Elder Thurman Hargrove. We called him Dean Hargrove. As far as the student body was concerned he was the Dean. I surely did not know that his fiscal expertise kept the school afloat. So to me, a basketball playing, donut eating, care free student would go about my business laughing, eating donuts, playing basketball and having the time of my life. I wasn’t even aware of his service in the church I just went to class and played basketball. Elder Hargrove’s son (also named Thurman Hargrove) entered Saint Paul’s as a freshman during my senior year and as far as I was concerned that is where the story ends. Well, I was wrong; the real story had already begun. Thurman Hargrove senior married at age 19 and is still with his wife today, not out of a sense of obligation but out of a love that has increased over the decades, 57 years to be exact. I had not been in touch with or seen Dean Hargrove in almost 40 years. Thurman Jr. and I have recorded music together and share a friendship. Imagine my surprise when I walked into Thurman Junior’s home and saw this spry, energetic and wide eyed individual who the student body referred to as Dean Hargrove. I couldn’t believe my eyes. He has the energy of an active 40 year old, his speech, his smile and the sparkle in his eye was unbelievable. I couldn’t believe it was him. I honestly expected a tired old gentleman perhaps with a cane and a little bent over. Not so for Bishop Hargrove, he has been and still is active in the church, with his family and in life. Bishop Hargrove is a spry 75 years young and as a Bishop oversees 21 churches in the Apostolic faith. He is on the road a lot traveling with his quartet and other times tending to churches located throughout Virginia. At least half of these road trips are long distance and he drives back and forth for the sake of the ministry and his family. In our conversation he said that “75 used to be old, it’s young now that I’m 75.” Hargrove History As a child Thurman Sr. had a conscious relationship with God and this had to be as a result of his upbringing. He would overhear his parents and grandparents talking about his call to the ministry at a young age. There really was something different about him that his peers were lacking. He knew that it was his calling to preach, even at the young age of 7 years. His first love however was singing. He began singing with a Gospel quartet at age 16 in Henderson, North Carolina. Even then he believed that God had called him to preach. His singing venture was halted when he married in 1959 and moved to Richmond, Virginia. At this point he and his wife became ‘Born Again’ and he was called to preach. Bishop Hargrove is an inspired preacher who looks to give a message from God, not just a sermon. It is his relationship and conscious time spent with The Father which has provided both inspiration to preach and more importantly blessed him, his children and grandchildren.

He ministers primarily out of the Refuge Temple Ministries located at 14430 Boydton Plank Rd in Warfield, Virginia 23889. You will find Bishop Hargrove there on most Sunday’s. Currently his primary ministry is that of teaching ministers. Thurman Jr. began playing the piano and learned just by watching others play. Thurman has been gifted by God to sing, play and read music though he never took formal lessons. Thurman Jr. is a very well known musician throughout the church world and the world of Jazz artists. Thurman actually began playing for the Saint Paul’s College Gospel Choir and the school’s Jazz ensemble in 1977. He has been the minister of music for churches such as First Union Baptist Church (Richmond, Va), Gospel Baptist, Mt Zion and the Refuge Church in Warfield, Virginia. One of Thurman’s daughter’s sings for an up and coming youth group called RESOUND, in addition Thurman Jr. has taken his children with him to gigs and church outings where he would perform Gospel music and as a result, his children now have the musical itch and are learning to perform. Thurman Jr. is the oldest of 5 siblings, has 5 children himself and is a family man having been married for 14 years. Thurman Jr. also records as well as produces for his father who has taken up the mic again and sings with the Bishops Quartet. Thurman Jr. is a technical engineer, who repairs computers, records, mixes and arranges music. He has produced music for various artists in the Richmond, Virginia area including the production of CDs for his father and the Bishops Quartet. When he is not directing the church choir or recording and producing music for his family and various other artists he performs with a highly renowned group out Richmond called Curve Appeal. Thurman Sr. has a show on June 5th in Richmond, Virginia. Details as to where and when are posted in at the end of this article. Thurman Jr.’s goals are to build a larger recording studio and put more of himself into producing and engineering. His favorite genre of music is Jazz even though he is adept at playing all genres of music. The Blessing! Thurman Jr. refers to his father as the Abraham of the family. Bishop Hargrove also has three sons who pastor and good health is the by-product of his faithfulness and he is never too tired to get on the road. His strength is from God and the result of right relationship with God. As Abraham was promised that God would bless his seed we see the same principle at work here with Bishop Hargrove and his descendants. While the blessing seems to be reflective in music, it is far more than just music. On health, it seems to be a byproduct of this working principle throughout the family from one generation to the next and most of all the awareness of and need for the presence of God which can only be expressed through right relationship with God is also active in this family. Example of a Generational Blessing by Neil Woodard (continued from page 23) The Nation of Israel was to have been a witness to the glory, power and righteousness of God as Abraham was. The Nation failed but will be raised up again in the timing of God’s purposes. The point here is that a generational blessing comes with a great responsibility. It is not enough to just be blessed; a lot of people and families are blessed. To be blessed with the purpose of heralding the glory of God in various levels is an honor and a great responsibility. Many people and many families are blessed but not every family carries the responsibility of expressing the Gospel. The Hargrove family achieves this through preaching, teaching and music. There is a scripture which states that the gifts and calling of God are without repentance and that means that God will give gifts to men, women and families whether they believe or not. It is up to us to give the gift back to God by expressing our gifts to glorify God (not glorify ourselves) and in the end, we’ll be rewarded for good or evil regarding what we did with our gift. Bishop Hargrove has a relationship with God that resulted in blessing and honor for his family members and he maintains righteous works to this day with the life given to him. Finally in my conversation with Bishop Hargrove, he stated that a generational curse can be broken and with this being the case; what are you prepared to do?

Health My Experience with depression by E. Denise Swatts-Scher My depression started very early in life! It was so early that I didn’t even know there was a word for it and no one realized it so, there was never any intervention. My feelings of self worth were so low that despair settled in fiercely and as I grew older I thought; why should I even go on with my life!? In my teenage years I fell into a rabbit hole and mentally I couldn’t get out of it and then I made myself so comfortable I didn’t want to get out. I had no idea this wasn’t normal. It became a safe haven for me in that dark, dank hole. It affected my decision making very badly. People in my life were always so busy as I was growing up and I truly didn’t get any adult guidance. I felt like a burden and so unloved that I looked for love in so many wrong places and the wrong people. To hear that "I love you" sentence caused me to abuse myself mentally and physically and worst, sexually. To anyone and I do mean anyone who showed me any kindness, I became a sad target. Being so depressed, you will do anything just to get out of that hole, even if only temporary! How I made it through school and got clean was only God because years later, I realized that was what He wanted for me. He wanted me to take care of His children, He was preparing me all along for this task and I didn’t know it! After existing in such a depressive state of mind for decades, a friend of mine literally made me make an appointment for a psychiatrist. The clinical definition for my state of mind and his diagnosis for me was depression-a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. It affected how I felt, thought and behaved. It can go on for long periods of time and a person cannot have a normal life during these periods. I also was diagnosed as a person with manic bi-polar. These symptoms usually last for days to weeks at a time. Episodes may occur several times a year or throughout the year. Mania symptoms include periods of elevated mood or irritability. When experiencing a manic episode, a patient often has high energy levels with reduced need for sleep. Treatment can help manage symptoms along with medications such as valproic acid, lithium, manotrigine among others and also included is behavioral therapy or psychotherapy After years of going through this route with little or quite often no results, I knew there had to be a better answer for ME! At this time I had been developing a relationship with my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I started praying for healing of my mind and my temple (should have done that in the first place but I just wasn’t there yet) I prayed to Him to send me like minded brothers and sisters in Christ. I concentrated on the hills. People have given me tracts which I have never bothered to look at and I started reading and studying them. I started trusting God! I started breathing better because I took His yoke. With that said, as a Registered Nurse I do not advocate that anyone just stop the prescribed routine while under a physicians care. This is my account of how I overcame depression. How I overcame depression First of all, this is an account of how I overcame depression. What worked for me may not work for others. I knew that I could not remain in that dark hole. My first step in overcoming was to give my life to God. I had absolutely no control over my life. In doing so, I developed a relationship with God. Why did I come to God? I tried everything else, the medication, the psychotherapy, the behavior therapy, sex, drugs and more. Nothing worked so I made a decision to try God. In developing this relationship opportunities opened up for me. This was personal and it was right for ME! My Experience with depression by E. Denise Swatts-Scher (Continue from page 25) My Turning point Medication made me feel LETHARGIC and it was hard to function as an employee, it was a struggle to get up in the morning to prepare for work. I was always tired. The life that I was leading was detrimental. I was a nurse by day but at night I craved to hear the words ‘I love you’ and for men to tell me that ‘I was not crazy.’ I craved it from the wrong people. I would go out with any man and do anything just to hear those words. These men didn’t mean it. I was lost but I would do anything to hear those words. All I wanted was the love that I never had. I created false validation whenever these men told me they loved me. My turning point began when I stopped taking my meds to get clarity of mind. While having a sexual encounter I realized that this man was just using me for his own sexual gratification (I could not realize this while on the meds). While realizing what was really taking place, I began to review with clarity other relationships. First of all, these were not relationships, these were encounters and all of these men had wanted just one thing and that was sexual gratification, or as I put it, just getting their rocks off. I was still very young and I was actually being passed around. I confused love with sex, these were older men, I was in my teens and I realize now that these men were pedophiles. Once I stopped taking the meds I began to realize what was really happening. I didn’t just stop all at once; I decreased my dosage at first and ultimately stopped medicating altogether. Factors that led me to God and Transformation I had nowhere to go! I wanted to get away from all of these people and so God sent me different people, praying people. I needed to have clarity of mind to receive and understand their message to me. Again I do not advocate cutting off psychotherapy or medication, what happened was for me. I believe it happened for me because I opened up to God finally and He answered. Let’s talk about meds for a moment. When you stop taking medication you will experience negative changes including withdrawal and other horrible experiences. I do not recommend cutting out meds and counseling just like that. I didn’t experience any of these because people were praying for me. This was a cleansing period of my life for me. I am not taking meds nor am I under the care of a psychotherapist. I did however take anger management classes and learned about my personal triggers. Learning my triggers was necessary, I prayed often sometimes with a group and sometimes alone. I didn’t attend AA, NA or any other A…why? Once you stand up and say; I am Denise and I am a drug addict, you by the word you speak delay your healing. I am no longer Bi-Polar, I am God-Polar. I no longer have the symptoms of being Bi-Polar. Does my healing fit the traditional model of treatment? As a registered Nurse the answer to the question posed is NO! They want you medicated, and engaged in behavioral and psychotherapy. Psychotherapy and medication from what I’ve seen is ongoing and never ending. The power of God is so complete that it cannot be explained. This was a miracle for me and traditional medical thinking does not accept the miracles. The person reading this article will have to weigh it for themselves. I knew that my life was not normal. The key to life and healing is establishing a relationship with God. He will direct your path. When you know that you’re not alone, it makes a difference. You will receive guidance because the lesson is not just for you the patient, it is for others as well. I don’t advocate going off of meds or therapy but I do advocate establishing a relationship with God. Every good relationship is a two way venture. Communication is never one way. The Bible states that all things are possible for those who believe. In the matter of depression we must establish a relationship with God FIRST. More notes on Depression by Neil Woodard Depression is personal… thus there are various ways to treat it effectively. What is effective for one individual can be disastrous for another. I could not fit into size 12 sneakers; my feet are too big, much too big. Why is that? Well there are different types of depression and various causes and triggers for depression. One size does not fit all, however let’s review another documented experience of a person who has experienced and overcome depression. Nancy Schimelpfening describes her battle with depression and how she overcame it. Her writing was reviewed and approved by a board of certified physicians (see article: How I Conquered My Depression). She explains how under the care of a psychiatrist she was prescribed Prozac and how it made her feel numb. Most importantly she identified the root cause and ultimately the triggers which resulted in depression. She continued with her psychiatrist because, after all he was the expert. He also told her that she would be on meds for this condition for the rest of her life. Several factors helped her to overcome depression. She has not been treated for or depressed for over fifteen years. She has not seen a doctor or taken any medication, nor has she experienced any bouts of depression for fifteen years. So what worked for her? Remember her cause and effect may differ from your cause and effect. These factors helped her to overcome:      

She changed her way of thinking She let go of alcohol She found her spiritual side Increased her intake of nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, vitamin D etc Improved her sleep hygiene (she got more rest) Discovered that seasonal affective disorder (foggy, cloudy, dim weather and environments) can be reversed by proper use of light

Summary Nancy did not just settle for traditional treatment. The meds she took made her feel numb so while she did not experience depression, she didn’t experience anything else either, no joy, no excitement, no anger, no feelings, nothing. Too often we give in to the ‘experts’ when we should consider other options. As I said, Depression is personal and effective treatment or healing will vary from one person to the next because of our history and our makeup. Finally, she mentioned getting in touch with her spiritual side but did not expound upon it because as she put it we have to find our own path. This is personal and individual and what might work for one may not work for another, but the truth is that depression can be healed for good and I for one am a witness and an example of this truth.

_____________________________________________________________________________ Roni Jacobson of Scientific American (August 13, 2014) states, “Depression, which affects about 16 million people in the U.S. according to the National Institutes of Mental Health, and more than 350 million globally according to the World Health Organization, is thought to be the result of interacting social, biological and environmental factors. The word “depression” is tossed around casually, but in reality the condition can be quite debilitating. People with major depressive disorder (also known as clinical, major or unipolar depression) exist beyond the realm of sadness. In fact, they can feel numb to the world and often become lethargic and lose interest in people and activities that formerly brought them joy. When the disorder is at its most severe, people with depression may even experience psychosis— seeing or hearing things that aren’t there.” “Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.” Romans 11:5 Page 29 of 56

Politics Bobby Junes/Part Two by Neil Woodard “Life is not about what we can do for ourselves, but what we can do in assisting others.” These are the words that Bobby June completed his first interview with during part one of last month’s interview. Last month Bobby Junes interviewed with the Remnant Magazine and expressed his intention to run for Mayor of Richmond, Virginia. He also laid out his plans to adjust policies impacting citizen functioning in the areas of housing, crime and unemployment. The second part of this plan covers his thoughts on education, family functioning and city government’s impact on citizens of Richmond.

Some significant goals that he has will be to reconnect the local citizens to the city of Richmond’s operations through improving the public education system, regarding employment; employees and employers must be more vested and connected, including more jobs, higher pay and job training, further we must recognize that today’s single parent family model as well as the dual parent family model must be considered in policy making and the provision of educational services. A vast majority of the minority population consists of the single parent family model and thus misses out on benefits appropriated for the dual parent family model as was pointed out in last month’s article. Bobby calls quality of effort in the work place and particularly in the academic setting the Q factor. Academically, politically and economically the scenario is just as important as the outcome of the scenario. The three components of the Q factor are:   

The Functional aspect; what the system is supposed to do such as process, assess, instruct, facilitate, protect etc. The operational aspect consists of how to run a system, the inception and back up of a system whether computer related, transit or academic or any other system needing to be assessed separately from the functional aspect. The technical aspect determines how a system is built and while this term may sound a bit on the digital side, there are still applications in education, social services, mass transit, employment, housing etc. The technical aspect determines the business function that you’re working with.

This Q or quality factor is a measure wherein city agencies will be assessed. Salary raises can be tied to the Q factor. Citizens should be given the chance to evaluate city workers and city workers must be given the opportunity to evaluate the citizens they serve. Citizens must be made aware that the city workers are working with less resources and city workers must realize that citizens must be dealt with on a long term transaction rather than the short term. Homelessness in Richmond Bobby Junes maintains that homelessness and poverty are hand in hand because to liberate the homeless individual or family from homelessness, the next step up for them is poverty likewise those who are impoverished are at risk of the next step down which is homelessness. Mr. Junes stated that “The city has got to do a better job of lending itself toward the high rate of poverty. As the poverty rate increases the homeless rate increases as well. We need to rethink and reassess ways in which the Department of Social Service interacts with the base bulk citizen group whose individual lives are largely disconnected from the typical lifestyle most others enjoy. They’re living lives like a random leaf on a Continue on page 32 “Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.” Romans 11:5 Page 31 of 56

Bobby Junes/Part One by Neil Woodard (Continued from page 31) tree, nowhere close to what they were meant for they’re led astray by friends, parents or societies expectations. They look at life with the perspective that with every step they take forward, it is three steps backwards.” If we don’t change this we’ll see higher rates of poverty and higher rates of homelessness. To effectively deal with homeless there is a supply and a demand factor which must be addressed. The demand factor means that the city must contact local employers in order to determine what they’re needs are with regard to hiring. With regard to the supply factor the city must work in concert with social service organizations in order to facilitate housing, employment , food stamps, health benefits, counseling and income (such as welfare checks). Education A review of the single parent verses dual parent model must occur and then revamped as more monies have been traditionally appropriated toward the dual parent households thus single parent households making up a majority of minority households end up receiving less monies appropriated for their neighborhood schools. In addition, two role model programs should be implemented, they are;  

Feeding programs (free breakfast) Integrating arts and technology into core curriculum courses (English, Math, Science etc)

Does God fit in? Absolutely! God helps me by keeping me focused on the population that my skills can best assist. This is a healthy prescriptive perception (God’s Guidance) on how to live a wholesome spiritual life in a physical world full of vices.

My Experience with depression by E. Denise Swatts-Scher (Continued from page 35) As a nurse, I have witnessed many "unexplained" things in my career that led me to know, GOD IS A HEALER AND HE IS STILL IN CONTROL! I conclude by sharing scriptures which impacted me in my dark days. Matthew 11:28-30 NIV - “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your soul. For my yoke is easy and my burden light.” Psalm 143:7-8 NIV - “Answer me quickly Lord, my spirit fails, do not hide your face from me or I will be like those who go down to the pit. Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go for to you I entrust my life.” Deuteronomy 31:6 - “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you or forsake you.”

Prayer for Healing… Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we pray for those suffering with incurable conditions. We are asking that you provide wisdom, knowledge and healing for those in need whether your move in their lives is a matter of time and process, or instantly. All life is in your hands and we acknowledge that you are more in control than any plan, doctor, medication or therapeutic process. We thank you in advance for providing the wisdom to assess our situation. We also thank you for a closer relationship with you resulting in direct communication from you in what our next step should be and the faith to move according to your leading. Finally we acknowledge that love heals and the greater part of healing is the result of love…for you, for self, for family and for others. Thank you and Amen!

History Civil War, Then and Now! by Neil Woodard The thing that hath been, it is that Which shall be; and there is no new Thing under the sun. Is there any new thing whereof it may Be said, see this is new? It hath been already of old time Which was before us… Ecclesiastes 1:9-10 For a significant amount of the United States population the fight for preservation of racial hierarchy has been and still is the ongoing characteristic motivation behind the Civil War then (the 1800’s) and now (the present tense). Let’s go back in time… The Civil War began in 1860 when South Carolina seceded from the Union resulting in other southern states to secede. States such as Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi followed suit within the next two weeks. Circumstances leading up to the war included the slavery issue and economic factors characterized by the industrialized north and the agricultural south. Additional factors leading to the Civil War include the Abolitionists movement, the Wilmot Proviso, southern fear of Blacks as a result of the Nat Turner rebellion, the John Brown rebellion and Lincoln being elected President of the Union to mention just a few. The Wilmot Proviso was an addendum in a bill included in the request for funding intended to negotiate a peace treaty with Mexico. Abolitionists (blacks and whites who stood against slavery) urged the inclusion of the Proviso which intended to prevent the introduction of slavery into new territory acquired by war. The bill never passed but resulted in strained relations between the northern and the southern politicians. Disagreements became so strong that the formation of a new party occurred. The Republican Party was formed in Ripon, Wisconsin in opposition to slavery in 1854. The Nat Turner rebellion (Virginia) resulted in laws forbidding the education of slaves and restricted the assembly of slaves for church gatherings unless a white minister was present. These new laws were the result of fear and panic of the white governing body in the south. Abolitionists consisted of men and women both black and white which stood against slavery. Slave driven economic development in an agricultural environment and the belief that Blacks were inferior was the justification for slavery in America by southern whites. This justification allowed them to brutally abuse and murder blacks bond and free. The abuse continues to this present day… From the Colonial years rich white men considered to be the ‘Elite’ had issues with indentured servants both black and white. Prior to the 1670’s Europeans in America (and in Europe) were identified by their ethnic group. Italians were Italians, English were English and the Irish were Irish. Black and white indentured servants shared common interests and were misused by the Elite. The Elite wanting to cause division created the white race thus making poor and working class whites feel superior to people of color as the propaganda began which stated that whites were having problems because of black people or any people of color. Economic power was not provided for poor and working class whites however the power that they were given was that of policing blacks which led to horrible forms of slavery, abuse, murder and disjointing of black families. Poor and working class whites remained poor and rarely attained Elite status, but they were a step above blacks. This mindset for a certain population of people remains to this day. By the time the Civil War takes place poor and working class whites in the South are fighting for the preservation of the Elite’s property. The truth is that slavery was against the interest of Continue on page 39

Civil War, Then and Now! by Neil Woodard (Continued from page 35) working class whites. Slaves worked for free and there was a lot of work to be done. The South’s economy was dependent upon slavery much more than the poor or working class whites in the South. The same trend continues in the Civil War now, the present tense of racial disharmony. Modern times, or continued abuse of people of color after slavery was legally abolished… As we walk through history coming up to 2016 and beyond we see racism, hatred, murder and abuse become legal and institutionalized as a result of the attempted preservation of racial hierarchy. The KKK (Ku Klux Klan) a white supremacist terrorist group was founded in 1866 in Pulaski, Tennessee. The goal was to perpetuate white supremacy through terrorizing and murdering blacks who had begun to win seats in state government and the U.S Congress. The terrorizing of Republicans both black and white occurred as a concerted effort to reverse policies established during the Reconstruction period. Let’s walk up to the 1930’s through the 1960’s. Our government backed home loans…to white folks mainly. Blacks did not receive these home loans; the process was called Red Lining. Since blacks could not afford to own a house they were forced into urban communities which we now call the ghetto characterized by sub standard housing, poor quality education and even the food being transported into these communities were second rate. This intentional segregation made it almost impossible for a family to build a quality future. Systemic institutionalized racism did not stop there; laws were designed to produce mass incarceration for blacks. According to statistics there are approximately six blacks for every white person in jail. A few examples of the development of laws targeting black communities are seen in the Stop & Frisk policies, higher sentencing for possession of crack than possession of cocaine and in many instances sentences are higher for people of color than for whites faced with the same charges. Police brutalities including the murder of unarmed blacks are condoned by judges and law makers. Police are not being punished for crimes against the people. According to a USA TODAY report, Johnson, Hoyer and Heath (August 2014), reported that nearly two times a week in the United States, a white police officer killed a black person during a seven-year period ending in 2012, according to the most recent accounts of justifiable homicide reported to the FBI. On average, there were 96 such incidents among at least 400 police killings each year that were reported to the FBI by local police. "In large part, the public perception of police use of force is framed and influenced by the media depictions which present unrealistic and often outlandish representations of law enforcement and the policing profession,'' the group said in a 2012 report. All of these modern day occurrences represent the Civil War now and there is a quiet spiritual component to this. Racism is the foundational fabric of American society, yet blacks are considered inferior despite the systemic institution of racism resulting in mass incarceration of blacks, sub standard housing, less job opportunities and on and on. But let’s stop a minute…are all white people white supremacists? Are all black people dangerous, lazy or irresponsible? No, of course not. During the Civil War blacks and whites stood against slavery together whether they stood as abolitionists, politicians, or soldiers. They lived or they died side by side. The history lesson here is that this is very much beyond a racially induced black and white issue. One major issue is fear of losing control…this was apparent in the Civil War then and the Civil War now. Racial hierarchy has always been characterized by control, fear and abuse. When Obama became President a percentage of the population in America began to fear a loss of control. How else can we explain that statement by Donald Trump; ‘Let’s make America great again’!? Prior to Obama’s election the American economy was in The Great Recession. Is that the greatness that Trump is referring to? While slavery has been abolished other laws have been enacted to mass incarcerate young black males, judges pronounce harsher sentences on blacks than on whites, unarmed blacks are being murdered by the police without Continue on page 39

Sexuality & Relationships Finding Love in All the Wrong Places by Vivian Allmond Booker Copyright 2016 You will not find the word "dating" in the bible. However, relationships between a man and a woman are repeated throughout the bible. God created Eve for Adam in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:18-25) creating the first marriage. Human beings are social creatures. We like interaction and it is natural to be attracted to the opposite sex. With the inception of the World Wide Web, aka the internet, it has opened new avenues of social connection. It has also ushered in scammers and deceptive people, who prey on innocent people for money or emotional gain. I want to introduce you to a friend of mine. For privacy, we will be calling her Alice. She is a lady in her early 50's. She is a widow and the mother of one son who is grown and out of the house. She has a very stressful job so when she comes home at night she likes to relax. She will check her e-mails and her Facebook page. One night, she had a friend request from a man she thought she had met. So, she accepted the friend request. She soon found out he was not the man she had assumed she knew. He was interesting; so what was the harm in chatting with him? They shared some of the same life experiences. He was a widower. He was raising a daughter who had just graduated from high school. Their birthdays were two days apart. The most intriguing point was his devotion to God. They exchanged cell phone numbers and chatted online for about two months getting to know each other. I warned her about giving out too much information about her life. She was impressed with his openness. He freely talked about his life. Things began to shift shortly after I talked to her. He wanted her to meet his family especially his mother. He informed her that he had to go visit her in the Bahamas where she lived. Alice could not go due to her job. So he went alone. While he was there his mother became gravely ill. He called Alice with the news that his mother needed a kidney transplant. He asked her to research and find out what the operation would cost. She found out it could cost $162,000.00. She wondered why he wanted her find the information for him. I asked her had she ever heard the word "catfishing" I suggested that maybe she was being scammed. She could not believe it. However, I explained that this was happening all over the country. Women and men would become emotionally involved with cyber friends. They would gain their trust and in the end their money. She was very upset. I told her to play along to see where it would lead. I did not want to be right. It turned out I was right. He contacted her. He had flown to Asia to settle his father's estate. He had worked in Asia and had money that needed to be redeemed. He was told he needed an attorney to complete the transaction He had $ 2,000.00 but the attorney's fee was $2,500.00. He asked her to send him $500.00. She told him that she did not have that kind of money to give. She said he told her "if you don't have it, you don't have it." Needless to say, that was the last conversation they had. Alice is not alone, according to the internet Crime Complaint Center, 1 in 12 users on social media and dating sites such as Tinder, Match.com. E- Harmony, Plenty of Fish and Christian Mingle to name a few face scams. In 2012, online dating scams cost Americans $ 55 million. People scam for many reasons, unresolved emotional issues, money, luring underage children and the added bonus, embarrassment of the victim. The question is asked; can these cons be prosecuted? It all depends on the specifics of the scam and also the state where they occurred. California, Washington, Texas and New York have made impersonation a crime. Continue on page 42

Civil War, Then and Now! by Neil Woodard (Continued from page 39) justification or retribution for these murders. Slavery has been abolished yet laws are still being designed to perpetuate oppression toward black families and individuals. The Civil War has taken on another form. So here is hope (true believers always have hope), oppression ended legally in 1863 and slavery was abolished. The law was dismantled. Today in 2016 our weapons are not canons and rifles; our weapons are prayer and yes, love. I am referring to love for God and the prayer of repentance. This has to be a collective effort if we’re going to have a collective victory. The war now must be waged in the Spirit and not materially and we have the power through love for God first. The Civil War saw the defeat of a hateful regime the first time and we’ll see it occur again this time only on a higher order. While a portion of the populace will tell us that slavery is over and the reason for it was to economically support the south we have to examine the real reasons for the abuse of blacks and people of color. There are the spiritual reasons which many will not receive and then are the natural reasons which many others will deny. Either way the bottom line is the absence of love on both sides. While this is an article depicting the historical content of a country, I would be remiss if I left out the reason behind the reasons. Many people of color around the world and in America are descendents of the original Hebrew (Jew) and those presently occupying the land of Israel are not all of Hebrew descent. As a people we left God (our first love) for the idols of material gain, power and worship of anything but God. Our abusers have destroyed and persecuted us out of hatred and a self righteous sense of entitlement and superiority that was never given to them by God. With both populations hatred toward God was manifest. Hebrews/Jews have always been a people of color and the Bible itself bears that out. God warned the entire Jewish nation what would happen in Deuteronomy chapter 28. Fulfillment has occurred and continues on to this day. The only way out of the bondage that we experience is through national repentance. The good news is that there will be a regathering and an end to all of the abuse. Now would be a good time for us to begin to repent and watch God move on behalf of us his people. It might take some time for some of us to catch on but when we do God will move for those of us who repent in a mighty way for the black and white community, family or individual who truly repents. Repentance is the beginning of love toward God and that is the greater love and when we have fulfilled our collective repentance then God will move spiritually, economically and politically for all those…black, white and all others who will have had the heart to love God and come to him first in repentance as a collective unit. Finally, repentance includes forgiveness; it is part of the process of repentance. Without forgiveness we will not have our prayers answered. “And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any that your Father in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.” (Mark 11:24-25)

Finding Love in All the Wrong Places by Vivian Allmond Booker Copyright 2016 (continued from page 41) How can you spot a fake Friend request? Here are a few things to look for: 1. Do you know the requester? Do you have mutual friends with the requester? 2. Is the person requesting very attractive? (looks like a professional model) 3. Do they have very limited Facebook history? (hint joined Facebook 10 to 12 days ago) It is very likely they are going to scam you. 4. They have a very small or very large number of friends, all the same sex 5. They have very little personal information on their timeline A person with a very sexy profile picture may not be at all close to how the real person looks. They set up larger than life profiles that mirror their proposed victims. They will send out random friend request in the hope of hooking someone. It is not all negative. You can find true love and friendship online. Most people are so busy with everyday life that they are only looking for companionship, or maybe a dinner or a movie. Being single, today is exciting but you must be careful. We as believers who find ourselves single must stay in the word. 1 Corinthians 15:33 states "Do not be deceived. Bad company ruins good morals." Singles are separate and unique. You must have the faith and the confidence in yourself that the right person is out there for you. Remember that the most important relationship you can have is with Jesus Christ and to love yourself before you can love someone else.

SPORTS A Glance at Greatness by Lamar Battle Look no further than the current NBA standings to see that at 61-6 the Golden State Warriors are the cream of the crop. They currently sport:    

The best start in NBA history at 16-0 The best start by a reigning NBA champion at 15-0 The top home winning streak in NBA history at 45-0 A player (Steph Curry) who scored 118 points in 3 games

Star player Steph Curry at (47.2 - 3 point fgm %) is poised to break the alltime individual record in threes made (286) set by him last season. Curry also has a chance to repeat as MVP while winning the award for Most Improved Player.

Lamar Battle, Professional Sports Writer

The Warriors are in position to top the Michael Jordan led Chicago Bulls all-time winning record of 72-10. With 15 games left in the regular season Golden State would have to lose no more than 3 games to eclipse the mark.

How did this happen? To start, best player Steph Curry (30.5 ppg: leads NBA) has (according to most fans, players and experts) moved in front of Cleveland Cavaliers star forward LeBron James as the best player on Earth. Curry has augmented his incredible shooting range with near flawless ball handling and passing skills.

Great Management: As I have said many times before, NBA success is determined by player pairing and chemistry. Taking that into consideration the front office with an able assist from consultant and NBA legend Jerry West has assembled a team to change the way basketball is played. The Warriors utilize what is known as a pace and space offensive game with emphasis on ball and body movement and a healthy dose of 3 point shooting effectively opening lanes for drives to the basket. The constant threat of long range bombing forces most defenders to bum rush shooters opening back door cuts to the basket. The resultant carnage produces runs of 15 and 20 points for the Warriors while putting most games out of reach. Sharp shooter Klay Thompson (21.9 ppg) and utility man Draymond Green (9.7 rpg and 7.4 apg) round out an effective starting group but the bench deserves a lion’s share of the credit.

A Glance at Greatness by Lamar Battle (continued from page 43) Great Bench: Reserves Andre Iguodala, Shawn Livingstone, Leandro Barbosa, Mareese Speights and Anderson Varajao form a group of NBA journeymen more than willing to sacrifice for the good of the team. Former NBA All-Star Andre Iguodala in particular was asked by head coach Steve Kerr to come off the bench last season for the first time in his career. He agreed and ultimately ended up winning the MVP of the 2014-15 Finals won by the Warriors.

Great Chemistry: Iguodala's example probably points more than anything to the core of what makes this team special. The strong chemistry is forged by a respect and affection for each other that shows up in an effort making the Warriors one of the top defensive teams in the league (43.5 opponent fg% 3rd best in the league). The road to the NBA championship this year will not be without challenges as the San Antonio Spurs (only a scant three games behind the Warriors in the standings) are ready for battle. So looking ahead to what may be an epic post season, one thing is certain and that is this franchise (a team in every sense of the word) is sitting on the precipice of long term and sustained NBA success.

A Message from Uma Glow

www.umaglow.com

Hello Remnant Newsletter friends! I’d like to introduce myself. I am the owner and CEO of Uma Glow, LLC which is a division of UMA Enterprises, LLC. My slogan is “Let Me Help You LOVE You” by taking care of yourself from the outside in. It is a commandment to honor the vessel that God has given so you can be the best for your family, friends and anyone else that needs you. We are all exposed to chemicals every day through our environment, but we have a choice in what we put into and on our bodies. I encourage everyone to choose a healthy diet with less processed foods. Think about what you last ate. How close was that meal to its natural state? The further away you get from the natural (loaded with ingredients that you can barely pronounce), the closer you get to living less of a quality of life in the future. The same goes for the products you use every day that are applied to your skin and hair. But the good news is you can make the choice to love yourself as God would have you to do! Let’s start with the wonderful products that my business produces. My products are manufactured with certified organic ingredients, fair trade ingredients and essential oils. We do not use any chemicals, fillers or toxic materials. I’ve researched each ingredient used in my products which can be reviewed at your leisure on my website www.umaglow.com. So let me help you love you by using my wonderful products made with love!

Testimony: Can God Hear a Whisper? by Diana Gaston After 10 months of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, I finished my last year of law school as a single parent of three young boys. Now I was looking forward to a fresh start in a new state which was 1200 miles away from my family. I knew that change was what was needed after all that I had experienced, so I packed up and was ready to take this leap of faith. The doctor’s had told me to not lift anything heavier than my purse so I asked the brothers at my church to help me on my move out date to load the moving truck. Many volunteered for the task, however on that date only one showed up. There I was with a house full of boxes, a moving truck and another person waiting to move in that day! I tried to move a few boxes on my own against doctor’s orders until I collapsed. And when I fell, I stayed on the ground and began to cry. This was too much for me to handle after all I had been through with cancer, single parenthood and school. As I laid on the cold concrete floor of the garage and whispered to God, “Please help me”, two young men approached me from nowhere and asked if I was moving in or out. Still in my despair, I answered that I was moving out. And they asked, “Do you need any help?” I lifted my head with teary eyes and disbelief and replied “That would be an answer to prayer.” Thereafter, for the next two hours, these two strangers became my answer to prayer as they loaded every item on the truck for me. I was even more humbled and amazed when they refused to take anything for their service. As they left, they asked where I would be moving. “Houston,” I told them. “We know people in Houston and if you give us your number we will pass it along to them,” they responded. I gave them my number even though I did not believe anything would come of it. Fast forward, a week later I arrived in Houston after driving the U-hall truck almost non-stop for 24 hours only to find that my new apartment office had closed five minutes before I got there. I was exhausted from the trip and I was rapidly coming down with Bronchitis, so with the little strength I had left, I drove to the local drug store for some medication. As I parked the truck and went to enter the store, two young men were coming out of the store and held the door for me. As I started to enter, one of them said, “Are you moving in or out?” I thought that was odd because that is what the other two young men has asked me before they helped pack the truck. So I looked up and said in the squeaky voice that I had left, “I just moved here.” And they said, “Are you Diana?” Shocked and almost terrified, I could not understand how these strange men knew my name. They quickly explained that their friends in Virginia had told them about me and that I would be moving to Houston, so they just took a guess that it was me. Here I was in a new city where I knew no one, and God had already prepared everything I needed. The next day, the two men arrived with two additional friends, and they moved all of my belongings into my new home as I sat in the truck too ill to even lift my purse. Not only did they unload everything, but they set up all the beds and but the furniture where it needed to be. And as before, they would not accept payment for their services. Remarkably, I never saw them again, but I always knew without doubt that they were sent by God to answer the little prayer that I whispered. In our moments of despair, no matter how small the request or how softly we whisper, God hears us. Never give up because help is on the way.

Looking ahead

The Unexpected must always be expected…we prepare for the unexpected by amassing information/knowledge and begin or continue our relationship with God. Next month’s publication will address the unexpected and the proper preparation for it. Here’s a hint…the right relationship is everything… A relationship, whether with ourselves or with God, with others or even with food and other things is key to preparing for and effectively addressing the unexpected. Whether the unexpected comes in the form of a blessing or a life challenge we can be prepared. Next month’s theme will deal with various ways to prepare for the unexpected. If public schools around the country conduct regular fire drills then we as individuals, families and organizations need to conduct regular drills with regard to the unforeseen. So we work on our character first and that will mean adhering to a higher order standard. We all know what they are…will we maintain them in trying times, will we build them up or drop our standards? Have a great month. I and the Remnant staff are looking forward to providing you with the service of love in order for love, God’s love to increase and expand all around the world.
