Since 2007, the GLAZENHUIS, the Flemish Centre for Contemporary Glass Art, has presented yearly pre-eminent, internationally acknowledged exhibitions featuring glass as an artistic medium within the contemporary visual arts. As from autumn 2013, the GLAZENHUIS – in cooperation with Ilse van Roy (MAD Faculty, Hasselt) – will organize an exhibition for young graduate Master students from European academic art programs. The members of the jury: Frederic Geurts (independent artist), Ilse Van Roy (MAD Faculty) and Jeroen Maes (GLAZENHUIS) made a selection of 11 talented artists who use glass as a jumping-off point in their artistic work. Transcending a mere material approximation of the medium, we are interested in realizations which give prominence to glass both visually and conceptually. Accordingly, not only objects, jewellery and sculptures but also videos and installations as well as paintings and photography are eligible to feature in the exhibition. We believe that this exhibition will generate interesting confrontations and we hope it initiates an open discussion about the position of glass within the art programs and the contemporary art scene.

Niels Vaes

Niels Vaes Keep On Going With this sculpture I want to give account of my perception of glass. For me it is a material that stands for construction, solidity and transparency. The idea was to make a sculpture that was based on triangles, an architectural supplement beside the staircase in the middle of the room.

Marie De Bruyn Staging the Object III Marie De Bruyn’s work stems from the traditional practice of glass blowing, and although the process is intrinsic to her work, she also uses mixed media to create conceptual installations. A strong component of her work is the material itself. Light, density and translucency are qualities that she uses to alter an object made from glass. Lore Langendries Le Collet / Le Bouchon In contemporary, industrial and identical, manufactured pharmacy bottles interventions were made, both manually and industrially, to create jewellery that attains a more human touch. A conflict between tradition and innovation, between mechanical and manual and between unique and serial.

Jesse Magee Blood Line Blood Line describes the area where two family trees, buried in the ground like roots, meet the surface. The viewer can stand on the platforms and become part of the piece, the root work below becoming their own bloodline. Giorgos Kontis Untitled My work focuses on painting as itself a process, on where abstract painting stands today, and on its function as an icon. I work through several different layers, and I am intrigued by working on glass because its transparency makes this whole route and process visible. Ramona Seyfarth Killing Time? KIilling Time? questions our ambivalent behaviour with regard to time. The exhibited work attends to different issues of this transformative riddle. Killing Time? was realised by many supporters. The material glass demands to be as careful as possible towards our ideas and their consequences.

Martina Strusny

Judith Röder Window III The works of Judith Röder move between the borders of implied manifestation and its transparent resolution. In this process Judith Röder uses window glass with projections of light and movement to transform her constructive geometric sculptures.

Catching Clouds

Projection III With the installation’s dimension the viewer is directly confronted with the material and the projection. The installation is the perception of the actual materiality of the glass and the immateriality of the projected image. The video projection and the structure exist in sync with motion. Martina Strusny Catching Clouds I would not go on a roller coaster, not for a million! But if the prize was to drift with the clouds. Then I would do it. Poetic short movie about longing.. Daan Gielis Wabbes live at Mannheim / Black Summer As with any atmosphere, Daan Gielis’ work is difficult to grasp, particularly in the way it seems unable to resolve the tension it evokes. The use of explicit materials and the emphasis on materiality are constants in the work, yet there always seem to be elements of elusiveness present as well. © Bram Ieven, 2012

The sound, the unceasing effort making objects of memory, of nostalgia. Nostos and Algos: desire, longing and pain in concert with each other. The bitter-sweet persistence of memory. Seaglass becomes a memory, defines an experience. It will not become just another piece of broken glass. Which it is.. Endless Data Set I spent a year investigating light as a physical phenomenon. I took 2,579 pictures of light projected through whimsical water lenses. Diffracted, distorted, destroyed. Everytime I look at them I see something different. My questions are lost. Even more so, the answers.
