elcome young ones to the best student city in the UK (and, most likely, the entire world): Sheffield. Might I first of all congratulate you on your fine choice of location for the next few years of your new life. Speaking from experience (and hearsay) Sheffield is the one of the most vibrant, steely and drunken cities in the world!
The coming years are important formative years in your life, you will become who you really are. (LOL not really - you’re stuck with the hand you got played at birth, losers). Soon you will experience the disturbingly life-like inhabitants of Corporation, see Spack Jarrow roaming the streets pirated out in all his Disney-esque glory and witness the truly beautiful scene that is scantily clad females queuing outside of Paris. Yes, there is much to come your way, dear child. But, while you’re having fun, remember for cheap poison and vino there’s Bargain Booze but for everything else there’s: Master Card The Student Magazine. Your Editor, Charlotte Grainger

o you made it? We’re so glad! We’ve actually been waiting for you guys to come find us. Welcome to the Steel City; a city that boasts more trees than people and more ale than lager. There is a lot to love about this city, as you will soon find out, and, though the sun scarcely shines, there is always warmth from the friendly Northerners who inhabit this space. But who will be your trusty companion to hold your hand every step of the journey through studenthood? The Student Magazine, that’s who! We’re here to help.
Think of us as a shoulder to cry on after that first heartbreak, a guiding star to lead the way on your walk of shame and a comforting ear to listen to all of your whiney little problems. The Student Magazine is your official guide to all things Sheffield.
To get you started here are some interesting things Sheffield has to offer:
Watch this space for some of the best interviews, reviews, previews, fashion, beats, film, gadgets and SO much more. This month, though, we’re taking you through the basics.
A Great Music Scene Some of the best bands to come out of this city include The Arctic Monkeys, Def Leppard and Pulp!
That’s everything from student hot spots to fresher fails to dealing with being skint.
Fab Theatres Sheffield is known for its theatres. Be sure to catch a show at the Lyceum or Crucible. The “Steel” City You will often hear the city being referred to as this. That is because in the 19th Century the city became one of the largest steel producers in the UK. The Full Monty Need we say any more? This beautiful city was the setting for the film that captured our hearts (and eyes).
Corporation
Whenever people ask about live music venues and nightclubs in Sheffield, the one that always makes the list is Corporation, located on the Devonshire Quarter. It is one of the major rock and alternative clubs in England and teamed with the inexpensive drinks, it’ll make you never want to leave.
The Forum
Cocktail bars with a good atmosphere are sometimes hard to find but one of our favourites in Sheffield is The Forum on Devonshire Street. The cocktail of choice for us is the Passion Fruit Martini, a blend of Absolut Vanilla, passion fruit and grenadine.
Winter Gardens
Being one of the largest temperate glasshouses to be built in the UK in the last century, the Winter Gardens is a huge tourist attraction and offers many its visitors the choice of numerous delis, cafes and restaurants. This means you can even make a day of going to the winter gardens whilst seeing the stunning and exotic plants.
Weston Park
If you’d like to travel from the centre of town to a nice place for a picnic, Weston Park is hard to beat. There is also a free museum which everyone must visit at least once during their time at university as it gives you the real story of the Steel City. Once, I had to go to my local Tesco’s to buy some tampons for my sisters. Along with that, I bought some chocolate and aspirin. The cashier was a guy, and actually said “Aww, time of the month again? Get well soon!” I was cherry red and there was a whole queue behind me.
I got really drunk in Plug and, because I knew the DJ’s, I was with them behind the DJ booths. I decided to flash one of them, just for a bit of fun as a joke. Someone took a picture of me, without me knowing, and before I knew it, the picture went viral. For a few weeks after that, I had men coming up to me, telling me I had a nice rack.
A few years ago, I was seeing this guy who quite liked me but after a while, I got bored and decided that it wasn’t working out between us. Then I went on a night out, got really pissed (standard) and decided to get with a girl that I’d met just that night. We got to talking afterwards and went on a few dates before it started getting a little bit more serious. We became official and she said she wanted me to meet her family and told me she had two brothers. Upon meeting her family, one of the brothers turned out to be the guy that I was seeing before! He hated me and wouldn’t talk to me for the first few months of our relationship but I ended up staying with her for two years so alls well!
One night during Freshers week after Corp, I managed to lock myself out of my room in halls. Instead of sleeping on my friend’s floor (because I had already thrown up on it) I wandered into the empty room opposite which had a lovely empty, comfy bed and got in it. Luckily no one came back that night and I got into my room the next morning with dignity intact, but a few weeks later I was out with my friends and got introduced to someone as ‘the random girl who slept in your bed’. Luckily he was very laid-back, but I was mortified!

s there anything we don’t want to know about Katy Perry, music icon, global superstar and self-proclaimed girl’s girl? What is it that makes this girl so fascinating? The 28 year old singer songwriter has had a whole host of hits and became the first female to have five number one singles come from the same album with her debut album “One of the Boys”. Katy is renowned for her captivating and quirky personality which has won her fans globally and was at the heart of her recent 3D film “Katy Perry: Part of Me”. Capital FM recently had the pleasure of meeting the girl herself and grilling her on music, starsigns and the last 12 months.
Adam: The last album, California Dreams was absolutely huge breaking records all over the place... You’re bringing out a new album soon, everyone’s really excited, what can we expect? Katy: Well I’m in the middle of writing it and recording it so it’s more a work in progress at the moment. I probably couldn’t say too much but I’m in the thick of it right now, I’m on my way to New York after to go back into the studio. Adam: You’ve had quite a crazy past 12 months; you are somebody who tends to put it all into your music… Katy: It’s always like the black box yes, my records are like the black box of my life and that’s where all of my most delicious secrets are! Adam: Taylor Swift, Rihanna… A lot of the girls I get to interview speak very highly of you. Katy: Do they? Aww thank you, that’s kind. I’m a girls girl. I saw something on The Bachelor, it’s
really fun to watch – I think The Bachelor said the way you know that a girl is a good girl, is if she has good girlfriends, because if girls can be friends with other girls, it shows that they’re not self-obsessed, insecure, and that they have a special kindness about them. Adam: It’s so true... Katy, we all feel like we know you really well... you know what I’m gonna be honest and say I feel like I care about you a little bit... haha... but we know that you’re kind of nursing a little bit of a broken heart, how are things in that department. Katy: You know, I’m doing very well. The thing about me is I’m a triple Scorpio and Scorpio’s tend to rise above Phoenix’s and I think being a triple Scorpio I do that three times as well!! Adam: You’re nuts but I love you – you’re exactly how I thought you would be. Lovely to meet you Katy Perry. Katy: Thank you! Nice to meet you.
K
aty Perry has over 41 million followers on Twitter, finally overtaking her rival Lady Gaga sparking extreme fan wars among people who don’t have anything better to do (Katy 4eva). Katy Perry is a stage name, her real name is Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson. Perry started performing as a gospel singer, releasing an album under the name, Kate Hudson. She has a cat called Kitty Purry, who has its own fan club. There are also fragrances called ‘Purr’ and ‘meow’ in cat shaped bottles. Yes, really. Her latest single Roar, the first off the new album ‘Prism’ sold more than 550,000 copies in its first week of release, her highest sales record to date. In a recent interview with Vogue, Perry revealed that former husband Russell Brand told her he wanted to divorce her via text and never spoke to her again. His loss.

Are you having some issues? Do you need to talk? Well, first of all you should probably ask yourself why you haven’t got any friends to confide in and secondly, once you’ve discovered it is because you’re a complete weirdo, you need to come to me: Aunt Laura. I am here to answer all your weird and wonderful concerns (and have a good laugh at your expense). You’re welcome! Contact Aunt Laura: hello@thestudentmag.co.uk I accidentally had sex with my neighbour on my first night in halls, I thought we got on really well but now he won’t text me back, or reply to my Facebook messages even though I can see that he’s read them. Sometimes I even wait for him outside his halls in the rain so I can sing the love song I wrote but he never appears. Help! Micha, 19, SHU
Firstly, congratulations! You are doing all the right things, so just keep going especially when it seems he is resisting the most, you must persist and you will wear him down. Have you tried sending lots of texts in a row? Capitals, exclamation marks and telling him you’re crying are essential in this process. Also you should add all his friends and family on Facebook and attempt to contact him through them. He’ll love that. Good luck and remember, never give up.

I have been with my boyfriend for five years (yes, since we were in school) and when I came to uni we decided to try long distance. He lives in Rugby, and commutes up at weekends for special visits. I have his Facebook login and (for fun) check his messages. I found him messaging some girl called Leah and the messages were not clean. Do I confront him? Amy, 22, UoS
Please take this in the nicest possible way: you are an absolute psychopath! You have left your boyfriend a million miles across the country and now you’re expecting him only to want sexy time with you? I‘m afraid you’re just going to have to face the fact that your boyfriend IS going to cheat on you and if you still want a boyfriend you’re just going to have to let that go. Keep quiet and know that you’re very lucky to even have a partner given how selfish you were coming away to university in the first place. Women, eh?!

e’re Students! We’re skint and we’re going to scrimp… so goes the chant. And why should we be ashamed? There is nothing wrong with saving those pennies! We can still live the (relatively) good life without spending big bucks. It’s not easy living to a budget; in fact it’s incredibly difficult. Your student years need to be filled with nights out, shopping sprees and fun. This is a feat, given that your student loan doesn’t stretch far past covering your rent and food! The Student Skint is here to show you how to live on a budget and still enjoy your student years for what they should be; an absolute mess of three years. Here’s how to scrimp your way to riches.

lanning a film night for you and your mates? Instead of paying extortionate ticket prices and then splashing out on cheap tacky food on top of that, why not hold your film night in the comfort of your own home? To accompany your film night you’ll need some popcorn (the movie essential). Instead of paying a couple of quid for a bag of toffee covered popcorn, make your own. You simply need some popcorn kernels, a paper bag, sugar, salt and a microwave (which we’re guessing you have).
• Pop about half a cup of kernels into the paper bag and fold securely. • Put the bag in the microwave for 90 seconds. • Take out. Be careful, as this will be HOT! • Cover with salt and sugar for that sweet salty cinema taste. • Enjoy!
Samples at Makeup Counters When you go into a store like Boots and purchase the first foundation you try, you can sometimes find that it may not look right on you in daylight, the texture might be all wrong for your oily skin or the colour may be a tad too light. That’s why if you go into department stores like Debenhams, you can almost always get a sample of foundation from one of the lovely makeup artists.

Life After Studenthood A Needed Break or a Nightmare?
Local Authority: Your ‘local’
L
S
eptember is always an exciting time for any student; the start of a new term, catching up with everyone after the summer break and heading out for all the freshers events. But for some people, September is when reality hits. Summer is over, university is over and now it’s time to face the trials and tribulations of real life. The Student Magazine talks to graduates about what they miss most about university and student life. Most students find university is a way of growing up without any of the issues ‘real’ adults have to cope with. A lot of graduates find once they have left university their independence can be restrained. “Due to a lack of funds a lot of graduates have to move back home and it’s a massive shock having to get used to living with parents again,” says 23-year-old, Media graduate, Dom Stirling from Blackpool. Whilst at the same time, graduates are now left in charge of their own
26
future, “university is like a safety net, once you leave it’s up to yourself to find a job and start funding yourself which is hard work.” Dom added. The main thing graduates have told us they miss most about uni life is definitely, their friends. For three or more years they have lived, worked, partied, laughed, cried, cooked, cleaned, done everything with their friends, and then once graduation comes many of them go their separate ways. Abi Steed, a Dance graduate from Essex, says: “I miss having your friends right on your doorstep, there’s always something going on, someone is always having a party or something. It’s horrible not seeing anyone anymore.” They say university years are the best years of your life, and you’ll make friends for life and that’s probably true going from what our graduates have said, so make the most of it! aunched on Friday 13th September, Local Authority is a brand new 350 capacity night club and gig venue that will be open six days a week, giving you Sundays to recover. Located above the main room of Sheffield’s most established night clubs, Corporation. The new club will be a standalone club with its own events, such as the birth of B@$tardPop, a mash up night with the DJ’s playing whatever takes their fancy. But if it’s the VIP edge you’re after, Local Authority is also going to play host to Mini Disco, a VIP lounge for Corp’s Wednesday night Skool Disco, so you can club in style as well as get out the rain and avoid the queues. The decor is influenced by the buildings original 1930s origins, with the original bricks and windows forming the bar, and the white, high vault, digital canvas ceiling gives the impression the roof is missing, displaying original artwork by 14 projectors. Local Authority has yet another level, the central stage makes it the perfect venue for mid-size, 350 capacity gigs, providing a cutting edge sound quality with its Fane Colossusdriven in house PA system. Thursday and Saturday nights are yet to be announced, so expect exciting things from the newest, most innovative venue in town.

ne of the largest fish in the world, the Mekong Giant Catfish grows to 10 feet (3 metres). Native to the Mekong River in Southeast Asia, the catfish is critically endangered. Current threats to the Mekong giant catfish include ‘overfishing, dam building and habitat destruction’, explains Zeb Hogan, host of the Nat Geo WILD’s “Monster Fish”.
28
In Thailand, cave paintings thought to be of the fish date back thousands of years, said Hogan. Fishermen caught a 646 pound (293 kg) giant catfish in northern Thailand in 2005 and this catch is the current record holder for world’s largest freshwater fish, he goes on to say.

Alaska's Redoubt Volcano 'Screamed' Before Exploding
E
arthquakes can often signal an impending volcanic eruption, and sometimes before a mountain blows its lid, seismologists detect a continuous, rhythmic series of quakes known as a harmonic tremor. One after the other, tiny temblors originate beneath a volcano, typically accompanied by a rumble that’s at such a low frequency, humans would not be able to hear it. But the harmonic tremor that preceded the March 2009 eruption of Alaska’s Mount Redoubt made the volcano “scream” because the frequency got so high, researchers say.
A
mosquito can detect the carbon dioxide emanating from a prospective meal from hundreds of feet away. The Kite Patch, a small, non-toxic sticker that you place on your clothing, can jam a mosquito’s CO2 radar. Wear one, the patch’s creators say, and you’ll be effectively invisible to the bloodsuckers for up to 48 hours. The Kite Patch was developed by Grey Frandsen, Michelle Brown and Torrey Tayanaka of Olfactor Laboratories and is based on the findings
A swarm of earthquakes — up to 30 per second — produced an unusually high-pitched racket at Redoubt and then an eerie silence, before the peak was rocked by a series of six volcanic explosions, according to some new studies. “If you were on the volcano, you might hear a very soft, low bass rumble (just barely at the limit of human hearing) followed by about 30 seconds of silence and then the roar of the explosion”, studies suggest.
of researcher Anandasankar Ray and his colleagues at University of California Riverside. The researchers identify three groups of chemicals that can disrupt a mosquito’s carbon dioxide receptors. Each group of chemicals works a little differently to confound its target. The first actually mimics carbon dioxide, and could be used to lure mosquitoes away from their human targets and into insect traps; the second prevents the mosquitoes from detecting carbon dioxide
altogether; and the third actually switches the CO2-sensing machinery of the mosquitoes into overdrive, overloading the mosquitoes’ senses to the point of confusion. In a project currently seeking funds, the team hopes to field test the patch in Uganda, ‘one of the toughest proving grounds there is’.

How do you describe Steel City’s own 65DaysOfStatic? That’s a very good question. Call the band “Post-rock” and you’ll render yourself extremely unpopular with the band members, “Instrumental” just doesn’t seem to cover it and “Math rock” sounds more like a school subject then a subgenre. Labels aside you could simply say they are a band of talented musicians who have a passion for what they do, energy that exudes from them on stage and a band who are fast winning fans all over the UK. After having watch the band’s electric (and, occasionally, electronic) performance at this years’ Y Not Festival, The Student Magazine caught up with Paul Walinski for a quickie! Are you all Sheffield born and bred? Just two of us. I’m from Manchester originally and Si, the bass player, is from Wales. How do you compete in the mainstream when you’re performing music which is a genre unto itself? We don’t really try and compete with anyone, we’re just us. It still surprises me, well, it doesn’t surprise me but I think it’s noteworthy that we’re still seen as such an odd prospect. If we weren’t a live looking band and we were all behind a bunch of computers then we’d just be another electronic band making music without the singing, which there are thousands and thousands of. There’s something about the fact we have
more guitars and a real drummer that takes us out of that group of understanding, and puts us a bit closer to rock bands but, because we haven’t got an obvious front man, no one really knows how to . . . Approach the band? Yeah. (After a pause…) Plenty of people know actually. What are you trying to do with your sound now? Critics of ‘We’re Exploding Away’ said the band is stepping away from the post-rock identity it had for a while and it was getting a more electronic sound. Are you going to keep on going in that direction or are you just doing whatever feels right? That record for us felt more of an evolution of our sound rather than a drastic change because we’ve always had those electronic elements. When we first started we didn’t even have a live drummer. All the beats were electronic and it was lot glitchier and nosier. So we’ve never identified ourselves as post-rock band. You’re often referred to as within that genre though? I guess it’s handy shorthand for some people, so whatever people want to use to describe it is fine. And the thing with “Exploding” is if they don’t like that then that’s also fine because it doesn’t make the other records redundant. They can still listen to those older records. We didn’t want to make the same thing again. The new record is probably less dancey than Exploding. It’s probably noisier and a bit more guitar, piano based. So maybe that’ll please them, I don’t know. We’ll have to wait and see.
Do you prefer touring and gigs, or festivals? Well, how to compare really? When you’re touring you’ve got your own crowd there and that’s a very different connection and it’s great. You can usually afford a little bit more subtly, whereas with festivals it’s more of a kind of battle because you’ve got a very limited amount of time with a lot less sound check, mind check time to win over a large crowd. For a band like us anyway there’s usually a large percentage of the festival who have never heard of us before, who are just watching us to see what happens. So it’s good to try and win them over. How did you guys form? Me and Si (Wright) went to university in Sheffield so we were all in the same place, wanting to start bands. Which university did you go to? Hallam. Si went to the real one. Ah nice, so you’ve had a creative streak all along then? I’ve always wanted to make music for sure and this is what came from it. How do you gel as a band? Who’s the loud one and who’s the dominant one? You could probably write a psychology thesis on our band. It’s a feat we’ve managed to stay together for twelve years and haven’t killed each other. And a good twelve years it’s been for the band. Roll on the next…

Bringing down the house! Paul Cox, of Wigs and Warpaint, and Lee Jones-Freeman, of Plug, bring house music back home to the Steel City!
“
There’s a lot of warehouse parties around and Sheffield’s now ready for the house music scene again. It seems to have come full circle! Because we’ve been around and done it before, there’s no reason that we can’t do it again.” says Paul Cox, of Wigs and Warpaint, the Sheffield music scene and basically everything the f*ck else, like ever. Paul’s knowledge and expertise of the music scene is extensive. He has been Djing in the Sheffield circuit since the dawn of time, otherwise known as the 1980’s, when he started in working men’s clubs and bars. Since then he has moved on to headlining alongside and supporting huge name Djs in some of Sheffield’s biggest clubs!
someone new.” says Lee. Here someone old applies to house favourite, Grant Nelson, and someone new to Sam Divine. The two will be headlining the event whilst Paul himself will be taking to the decks. “We’re going to give it a blast!” he says, “It’s house. It’s crowd pleasing stuff, but not cheese!” What? No even Camembert? Mi Casa will be held at Plug on October 12th and tickets are on sale from the Plug box office now!
Paul has had his finger in the promoting scene pie, boasting a massive success in his original night ‘Hustle’ (at Plug and, later, Gatecrasher) and most recently West One Rox . He doesn’t f*ck about when it comes to getting spanked off his t*ts which has obviously worked in his favour since his looks like a hot 24 year old stud when he’s basically a f*cking mummy! On October 12th Paul will see the birth of his next baby, Mi Casa; a joint venture with Lee Jones-Freeman, Plug’s Business Development Manager. The night ties in perfectly with the 6th anniversary of Wigs and Warpaint! “We’ve had a long chat about it. Lots of people our age want to see the old school people, but there’s not enough of a market for just that, we had to bring in some new blood too. The Ethos of each event is: someone old,

ibra is the seventh sign of the zodiac, and it’s at this point in the zodiac that we start to see a shift. While the first six signs of the zodiac focus on the individual, the last six focus on the individual’s contact with others and with the world. Libras are first and foremost focused on others and how they relate to them. We call this the sign of Partnership because Libras feel most complete when they are coupled up with their lover.
Libras & Relationships
Libras are the most gullible when in love. They are in love with the idea of everlasting love, which sometimes can lead to their destruction. At times, they do not see past the negative side of their partners, or even attempt to investigate. What they want to see and feel in a person is a fixed thing in their mind.
Libras & Health
Libra rules the kidneys and lumbar region (including the lower spine and back). Unsurprisingly, Librans
42
are prone toward weakness in the lower back. They’re also predisposed toward kidney ailments. Balance is the key to Libra’s health and wellbeing. A balanced diet is imperative.
Libras & Work
Libras are liable to be involved with any aspect of the law, politics, or dipomacy. Their eye for design may lead them into areas such as fashion, art dealership, or graphics. They will also enjoy working in jobs that involve talking and presentation, such as promotional work. Many Libras are good at planning business ventures.
Libras & Friends
Libras are usually very social people who like to be on the go. Life for Libras revolves around keeping in touch with other people. Libras will work hard for a friend, giving themselves tirelessly for days on end. Friends should not mistake the Libran recuperation periods as a loss of interest.

Life is all about balance and right now your life is severely imbalanced. You spend far too much time having fun and not enough time planning out your future. Well, the future is coming and pretty soon it’s going to hit you hard in the face. You’d better be ready.
You’re a scorpion. People don’t like scorpions because they are scary and deadly. Do you think you could perhaps try to be more like a kitten? From an extensive internet study I can assure you that people love kittens. Meow.
You’re an archer. Occasionally, though, you aim at the wrong target. Take some time to think about what you actually want in life. Then when you’ve decided realise you probably won’t get it and lower your expectations to suit reality.

You are a goat. A hairy ugly greedy goat. You think everything is fine and dandy when you’re eating your grass on your hill, but eventually people are going to get sick of you eating all the grass. If you don’t start sharing more people are going to get really annoyed. People are going to start planning a goat curry for dinner. You’ve been warned.
Aquarians are unique by nature, but being unique is not always a good thing. In fact, sometimes being unique can be an extremely bad thing. Try to make sure your uniqueness doesn’t get unwanted attention or you could end up wondering why you’re in a cage with people paying to take a peek at your mug.
You are a fish. If you’re lucky you’re a salmon; the boss of all fish. If you’re not so lucky you’re a bottom feeder, eating the remains of the sea; nature’s leftovers. Either way you’re a fish and there’s nothing wrong with that, as Dory would say “Just keep swimming.”

Strong and suave, you are the ram. You are something of a stud, if we’re going to be completely honest about things! You are the sort of person who gets all the attention in a club and never leaves alone. Be careful though, unless you want little lambs hopping around your hooves.
As everyone knows Taureans are the best of all the zodiacs. You are the bull, the master and the commander of everyone around you. This month holds disappointment though. Someone is going to try and steal your horns. Don’t let them.
The twins that adorn your sign aren’t literal, they can be figurative. So if you’re not a twin, never fear, this probably just means that you’re one of the people in this world with a split personality. Own it. Take control and let both of your personalities shine through!

Do you ever get the feeling you’re going sideways? Instead of moving forward in life (or even backward) you’re simple going side to side. Well, that’s because you’re a crab! Silly! You’re bound to go sideways. But if you turn to your side you can actually go forwards (though to you it’ll still be sideways.)
Rawr! You’re a lion. But you’re also quite selfish when it comes down to it. Remember that you can’t have everything your own way all of the time. If someone happens to be doing you a favour then don’t throw it back in their face or you’re gonna hear me rawr!
Your symbol is the virgin, but we know you better than that! Still too much love can hurt, and itch, and scab. Make sure you get yourself checked out every now and then. You might find that all that lovin’ has infected you!

Y Not Festival
In the midst of thunder, lightning and relentless rain we arrived at the Y Not Festival!
T
o be frank this wasn’t exactly how we’d first planned our weekend away going. We may have envisioned a sunny idealised field with free booze flowing, but what we’d turned up to was more like a dystopian future where the population of the world was forced to fight for a dry patch of land under the remains of tented structures after having
fought their way through knee deep mud. This was the beginning of our weekend at Y Not Festival. There was no way we were going to put a tent up in this weather, so we settled for sleeping in a friend’s car. (It’s worth noting here that sleeping in a car is just as comfortable as sleeping in a tent, if not more
Wet Nuns
Sheffield and Leed’s own Wet Nuns made an appearance. If you don’t know much about the band then I can only assume you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of years, because this band is everywhere, all the time, always. A topless and tattooed Alexis Gotts took to the drums, occasionally yelling, roaring and singing into a mic, but generally killing it. Hair flicks were aplenty from Rob, who was admired by several ladies in the audience. The band’s unique style of rock, hailing from the Deep South of Yorkshire, has in recent years become extremely popular especially within Sheffield itself. This year the band played a handful of festivals, securing their status as a band to watch.

comfortable. Erm, why do tents exist again?) After a night’s rest we were ready to explore what the festival had to offer. What the festival had to offer was eclectic to say the least; everything from free cider, to a roller disco to a Holi style paint fight. These things aside there was also some music.
Ash
Wet Nuns
Ash
The Student Magazine | Issue 57 | www.thestudentmag.co.uk
I have to admit I was at first surprised to find out that Ash would be appearing at Y Not Festival. As the official Best Small Festival, the event draws some great acts, but Ash somehow seemed out of their range. However, there they were, all mousey brown haired and energetic, playing live at the fest. The Northern Irish band have been going since we were all eyeliner wearing teens and seemed to have skulked off radar in recent years. The band’s performance was lively and, dare I say it, intense from start to finish. Lead singer, Tim Wheeler, who is now at the ripe old age of 36, held his own belting out some of the band’s hits. My personal favourite, though, was the climax song “Burn Baby Burn” which completed the fantastic set.
The Darkness
Hey, remember that band The Darkness? Who were they again? Didn’t they do that terrible song? You know the one where the lead singer sounded like he’d been kicked in the balls? Didn’t he wear ridiculously sparkly clothes? Are they still alive, even? Yes, yes and yes. They still exist. Lead singer, Justin Hawkins (Oh yeah, I remember that name!), still sings higher notes than a cat having its tail pulled off. And yes, he still wears that crazy attire that we knew and loved him for. Here they were, right in front of my eyes, playing Y Not Festival. You will never believe me and I’m almost a little nervous to write this for fear of social suicide, but they were absolutely amazing live! Sure, the music is pretty awful, not to mention annoying as hell, but this band, they’ve got something about them. You have to give it to him; Justin Hawkins is a great performer! Within minutes he literally had the crowd worshipping “The Darkness” logo and chanting “Logo! Logo! Logo!” The set did have a somewhat pantomime feel to it, but that was by no means unpleasant. In fact it was probably exactly what we needed to break up a weekend of ultra-serious
The Darkness
bands playing their ultra-serious and deep music.
The 1975
You just can’t get away from The 1975 at the moment, am I right? They are quite literally everywhere and anywhere that will take them. Still, their indie pop music isn’t half bad and there has to be a reason these guys have had a couple of top hits in their short spanning career so far. No lie, I love them. I have the slightest crush on the suave lead singer, Matthew Healy, and so was expecting something rather impressive from their performance. The best I can say about this band is that they were good. They were certainly nothing special, there was nothing notable about the performance, and there’s not much more to say.
Kids in Glass Houses
So there’s a man-boy singing whiney Americanised lyrics about his feelings. Sorry, are we still in the early 2000’s? I thought Emo music was dead, and rightly so, yet Kids in Glass Houses don’t seem to let go of the ridiculous concept. I have two major problems with this band. 1. They are Welsh and yet sing in feigned American accents. As
The 1975
someone with Welsh heritage this makes me want to slap them, hard, and until they stop singing. 2. They just aren’t very good. Aside from the accent and much jumping around, this band has little to it. I wasted half an hour of my young life (and might I add not for the first time, since I was unfortunate enough to see them a few years back when they supported Funeral For a Friend) watching these guys make a mockery of music in general. Never again.
Swim Deep
The next big thing? Apparently so. The so called B-Town band (that basically means they gig in Digbeth, Birmingham and this makes them super cool) were all people were talking about at the festival. On seeing their set I really couldn’t understand this. The word “bland” comes to mind. They were just so dull. Sure, they also did the pop-indie style justice, but no more than every other band who have ever attempted this feat. The one notable thing they did was a version of “Girls Just Want To Have Fun”; it was funny and we sang along. But that’s not their song and, I fear, this is the main reason we enjoyed it. This band maybe up and coming but they aren’t half boring. Snooze.

That being said, I wouldn’t spend hours and hours on the internet looking at cats doing various things. Blogging sites such as Tumblr and Reddit are full to the brim with posts about the fluffy pets; there are cat memes, grumpy cats and even a slightly stranger blog entitled “Boys
Worse still in the past, I have to admit, when I’ve needed a little pick me up, a friend of mine has sent me a video of a cat playing the keyboard, (and, yes, I laughed). But this global obsession with the pets is out of hand and, frankly, it’s driving me insane.
I’m not going to lie; I have been known to laugh at some memes about kittens and when the trend was current, I even watched the Nyan Cat video.
Stop Taking Selfies! By Ellie Lewis, September 2013
I
thought we were long past the days of MySpace and people taking pictures of themselves in the mirror with a pout, but it seems Instagram has brought the trend back in full, filtered force. Now, I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with taking a picture of yourself. I, and other people on my dash, have been known to take a picture of ourselves occasionally. But when every single, picture on your profile is of you, I think you need to have a word with yourself – and not another photo. Especially if you’re one of those

The Best Things about Being Single By Ruby Qaimkhani, September 2013
S
ociety seems to have drilled into our heads that we need someone to be happy; a better half, so to speak. Forget about that because believe it or not, there are so many things that single people get to do that couples tend to miss. Here are the top five things about being single: • You can go to that house party that everyone’s been talking about and you don’t have to shave your legs every few days.
• If one of your friends calls you up for a lunch date, you have no reason to say ‘no’. • You can flirt with whoever you want, without any consequences. • There is no need to convince your partner to go and see that movie with you, just go with a friend! • You can look your worst, watch and eat whatever you want, any day of the week and still feel your absolute best.
Bartenders Are People Too! By Charlotte Grainger, September 2013
A
s someone who worked in pubs for five years I noticed one defining thing that irks bartenders. I genuinely think this is something that people who have never worked in the industry cannot appreciate.
apt as when an arrogant man talks loudly into his phone about his day whilst expecting you to telepathically receive his order. But we aren’t merely vendors, in case you haven’t noticed, we’re people.
It is the way in which time and time again bartenders are treated as though they aren’t actually people, as though they are some invisible entity which provides the customers with what they so greatly need.
When we’re outside of this building we’re exactly like you. No, scratch that, we’re exactly like you, but with the added bonus of us having manners.
The term vendor has never felt so
What you probably didn’t know was that when you’ve gone, having been
particularly ignorant and rude, we talk about you. No, we don’t spit in your drinks or give you bad service; we’re above that. But we do talk about you, or, in some cases, merely silently agree that you are a horrific human being. So if you want people (because we ARE people) to think that of you then carry on with what you’re doing because, believe us, you’re doing a fantastic job of it!

Savour the Memories of London 2012 as There Will Never be a Summer Like It! Do you remember the heady summer days of 2012, when Great Britain basked in glorious sunshine as an absorbing Olympic Games took place on our doorstep?
I
n a year when Wales won their 25th Six Nations title, Europe triumphed at the Ryder Cup and Spain won an unprecedented third successive international tournament at Euro 2012 – all impressive achievements in themselves – London 2012 was unequivocally the gold medallist. Each and every day, the British public flocked home from work to watch the Games on their TV and in fan parks. Spectators and Gamesmakers struck up conversation on the Tube, which usually serves up a nervous concoction of awkward silence and sweaty commuters. 11 million people attended an Olympic event, while more than 90% of the British public watched at least 15 minutes of the BBC’s dynamic Olympics coverage. Even Her Majesty the Queen played her part, starring alongside James Bond in a spellbinding opening ceremony. First, the Olympics’ pin-up girl and everybody’s not-so-secret crush, Jess Ennis, won the heptathlon at a canter. Then came Greg Rutherford’s
mammoth leap in the long jump, before Mo Farah stormed home to the roar of a cacophonous Olympic Stadium to win the first of his two gold medals in the 10,000m. All three medals came within the space of one energy sapping hour, and followed the three golds already won by Team GB earlier in the day. The Paralympic Games, previously seen as a subsidiary event, only served to prolong the nation’s giddy excitement. Logic-defying feats, such as David Weir’s astounding four gold medals, won the hearts of millions of people. When Italian handcyclist Alex Zannardi held his bike aloft at Brands Hatch, a course he had raced at less than 15 years previously before losing both legs in a tragic accident, the entire nation discovered a new hero. It has been more than a year since the Games burst into life, but although there has been no Olympics this summer, 2013 has certainly been no slouch in terms of sporting successes. The year is still only eight months
old and already the British and Irish Lions have won a nerve-jangling tour Down Under, Andy Murray became the first Briton in 74 years to win Wimbledon and the Ashes have been retained on home soil. Yet even accounting for these three magnificent achievements, the abounding euphoria of yesteryear will never be matched, let alone surpassed. Lord Sebastian Coe, the mastermind behind the Games, said that the summer’s events were not only “for the people”, they were also “by the people”; the spectators, the Gamesmakers, the athletes. In no other event does such a diverse background of people play a leading role in a worldwide showcase of talent. Grandparents and youngsters alike were enthralled as they visited the vast Olympic Park and the ExCeL Centre to watch handball, judo and sitting volleyball. And that’s what made it such a special, unique event. Everybody had caught a serious bout of Olympic fever. Kristian Johnson

Restaurant & Bar Review
Graze Inn - Eccy Road
W
elcome Freshers! Your student life has begun!
If you’re new to Sheffield you’re in for a treat - there are some fantastic places to discover and hang out in the marvellous Steel City. Top of our food list is Eccy Road’s Graze Inn. Inventive British flatbread pizzas, rotisserie chicken and sharing boards are just some of the fab foodie delights on offer. Best of all? It’s cheap - and the portions are flippin’ massive! Oh and it’s all freshly sourced and made, none of that mass manufactured rubbish here. Head left through the doors on your arrival for great cocktails, wines and beers in the bar (get there early to bag the comfy leather sofas). Happy Hour is 5-7pm Sunday to Friday and offers 2-4-1 cocktails, plus beer and wine deals. The cocktails are brilliant, believe us. To your right is the restaurant. Sumptuous booths sit alongside bright window-side tables and spaces big enough to fit all your friends. The aforementioned British flats, rotisserie chicken and sharing boards are the stars of the show, alongside a variety of risottos, pastas, salads, desserts and more (head in
with your pals and go for the massive dessert board, which features one of each dessert - we promise you won’t be disappointed). Fancy a bit of star-spotting? If you’re out and about of a Thursday evening, pop into the bar for Funky Graze - a DJ set by Reverend & the Makers guitarist Ed Cosens, with the added bonus of the lovely Rachel Cosens too. They are in the market for as many hi fives as you can chuck their way (every first and third Thursday of the month). For more info, check ‘em out online at www.grazeinn.co.uk or on Twitter @GrazeInnSheff. See you at the bar!

Just outside the city, there are a few streets of old industrial buildings which are slowly being taken over by new coffee shops and vintage warehouses. At its centre is a treasure trove of old, traditional pubs for fans of Real Ale, cider and afternoon drinking. As well as this it boasts ‘The Kelham Island Brewery’ which is a Sheffield institution and creates new specials every month. If
you’re super keen you can even take a brewery tour and see how it’s all done! Fans of live music can head to Shakespeares on Gibraltar Street or The Riverside on Mowbray Street to enjoy some local musical talent and locally brewed real ale. After this, everybody who visits Sheffield needs to head to the Fat Cat, one of the city’s most famous pubs, serving great food and with a lovely beer garden, the Fat Cat an essential stop on your real ale tour of Sheffield. Make sure not to limit your drinking to the Student’s Union or West Street and get a taste of real Sheffield too!
O
ur resident Boozy Lady has been at it again! This month she’s been adding a touch of class to her intoxicated lifestyle by attending the traditional English event of the horse races. Ascot it was not though and our girl managed to go the entire day without actually seeing a horse! “I only bought one bottle of bubbly!” she grins, whilst telling us of her exploits, one of which being her practically falling asleep in a strange man’s arms and her mates having to pull her off him before things went terribly wrong. “One guy bought me a bottle of wine that was £100, still tasted like Aldi’s own mind you.” But was it a successful day you ask? Free bubbly aside did Boozy McBoozer win the big bucks? When we asked her whether she’d won anything she simply replied, “How should I know? I do remember placing some bets though...” Oh Boozy!

A
pple’s Vice President has described the iPhone 5s as “the most forward thinking phone anyone has ever made which fans of the iPhone will most certainly be hoping is something the new model can live up to considering the disappointing iPhone 4 and 4s models.
however, they claim that the new design will have similar performance despite the new and improved processor. Additionally, as well as the white and black designs there will also be a gold version to appeal to an ever wider market. New iPhone releases are always highly anticipated, so lets hope the new addition lives up to the hype that Apple are creating.
Speculation has surrounded the release of the 5s because of the addition of fingerprint recognition technology in the home button meaning users do not have to enter a pass code to gain entry which hopefully will be a positive addition security wise. What most iPhone users struggle with is battery life,

One Direction: This Is Us Director: Morgan Spurlock

his film is a dream come true for screaming, crying, crazy teenage girls (and boys) all over the world. This is Us is a mixture of performances from One Direction’s live shows at the O2 Arena, clips from before their X Factor fame and footage from a camera crew which has been following them go about their daily lives. This film was billed as giving an all access, no holds barred insight into the lives of Zayn, Harry, Louis, Liam and Niall. Now, I’m not a film snob or a boyband hater but I also have eyes, ears and a mind which doesn’t

take too kindly to being numbed for the price of £7.00 and one and a half hours of my life. There is nothing here that we haven’t seen before, no massive behind the scene revelations, insight or excitement. This is a lazy film because it doesn’t have to try. The film company could have released a ninety minute head shot slideshow set to ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ on a loop and millions of teenagers would still have paid to see it. This film was never going to light up my world like nothing else (sorry) but it’s a shame on behalf of the serious fans that they were so badly short changed. Poor effort guys.

Directors: Jeffrey Friedman Rob Epstein
P
eople who hadn’t heard of Linda Lovelace before seeing this film will not be forgetting her in a hurry. Documenting her fast and easy rise to fame and her sad and sleazy decline, this film is not for the easily shocked. Deep Throat, released in 1972 is one of the highest grossing and most famous pornographic films of all time and was Lovelace’s first and only film. The plot-line centres
North Norfolk Digital, a small local radio station which has been taken over by a younger crowd and renamed Shape. Cuts are being made and Alan’s colleague Pat takes action against his redundancy by grabbing his shotgun and holding the station and it’s occupants hostage. He asks Alan to be his spokesperson to the authorities and public giving him an always welcome, opportunity to shine. This film is brilliantly funny, it gives the audience everything it could have wanted from an epic Partridge feature.
around her destructive, abusive relationship with ultra controlling husband and manager Chuck Traynor. This is where the film shines because where it could have simply been sensationalist, focusing only on sex and glamour it delivers an honest and brutal portrayal of the reality behind it. Amanda Seyfried gives a compelling, believable performance as Linda Lovelace and is supported by a cast full of big names. Funny, sexy and deeply tragic all at once, Lovelace is well worth a watch.
A
bit of the Old Ultra Violence…some films are best kept to the darkness. Midnight Marauders is a fresh monthly event starting from September aimed at cult film fans and newcomers alike. Showing an eclectic selection of hand picked films from the ‘60s all the way up to the ‘90s spanning centuries and genres; the Showroom is bringing the golden age of cinema back to Sheffield. The price of admission includes entry into a suitably themed bar followed by a classic midnight movie. Kicking off with Stanley Kubrick’s eternally infamous and previously banned The Clockwork Orange; expect the staff to be dressed as the Droug gang with a glass of milk in one hand and a cane in the other for a complete and immersive movie experience. The general public are encouraged to join in with the dress up, with the promise of a suitably tailored glass of milk upon entry. Next is Ridley Scott’s Alien, the monster movie that caused fainting and induced vomiting from audiences on the opening night. These are just a few of the films on offer over the season including Alien, Clerks, Die Hard, A Clockwork Orange and Mean Streets. Get down to the showroom and relive these classic films or experience them for the first time how they are meant to be seen. Sam Barnett

ow I’m nervous. On the line is a straight-talking Midwestern girl who doesn’t hold back. The girl’s name is Elizabeth Maurus, known to her fans simply as Lissie. Three years ago she released her debut album, “Catching a Tiger”, which went Gold. This September she is set to release her second, and much awaited album, “Back to Forever” and has already released the first album single “Shameless.” When, three years ago, Lissie swaggered onto our radar it seemed as though she’d come from nowhere. Her cover of Kid Cudi’s song “Pursuit of Happiness”, which had been performed at festivals throughout America, soon became a huge YouTube hit receiving over 150,000 views. “People in the States knew about us [then]. Now when we go to
70
Norway people request “Pursuit of Happiness”, even though that’s something that we did four years ago.” says Lissie, “This version was a great escape. That was like the first time we really played it. We weren’t really sure how it was going to work.” At this point I’m taken over by madness and attempt to imitate part of “Pursuit of Happiness” which goes “Ooo Aay Ooo”. Obviously my attempt is quite terrible, so Lissie cuts in doing a somewhat better version. That awkwardness over in reality, but forever scarred deep into my mind, I move on to the safer subject of how she started in the music business. For Lissie this has been a long time coming, which, I guess, is why she is so at ease with the situation now. “Well, I moved to Los Angeles when I was 21.” she says, matter-of-factly,
The Student Magazine | Issue 57 | www.thestudentmag.co.uk
“I’ve been singing my whole life and writing songs since I was 15. I think from my early 20’s I had a deal and worked with some producer and things never got finished. I had a lot of starts and a stop, so “Catching a Tiger” was really my debut album after sort of trying to get a debut album made for five years or something. I didn’t think about it like that at the time, but now looking back at it, it’s like “Oh yeah, that’s kind of what happened.” The style of Lissie’s music is somewhere inbetween rock and pop, though she has an edge over the majority of manufactured music in the charts. “Well I think I started off as a solo songwriter, story teller. So I’d just describe my music as being straight forward, like my personality. I’m from the Midwest in the United States, so I think that kind of gives me a naïve and self-deprecating
nature. But in the same breath I can be like no bullsh*t.” That attitude is what made Lissie’s first release such a success. The album went Gold and, in what seemed like overnight, Lissie was everywhere. “I mean it felt really good. It felt like a manageable amount of attention as well. It was well received and it lead to a lot of great opportunities for the band and I. But also it was still like I have further to go, so I think it was a healthy amount of success. It opened a lot of doors for me.” With the door to the UK firmly open Lissie and her band were taken aback. “I was totally clueless almost. I didn’t even know what to expect. It was just surprising that I just put out this music and then I was getting to come over to the UK and within a year I was selling out Shepherd’s Bush [O2 Empire]. It felt like a dream come true.” Since that dramatic response Lissie has taken a step back, deciding not to attempt to rush her follow up album. “I just chose to keep writing and recording and demoing things. I didn’t want to rush the second album; I just thought it would happen naturally. So it’s been a couple of years in the making.” Her first album single release, “Shameless” comments on the
popular celebrity culture of shameful behaviour being used in order to get attention. A few names spring to mind, but we won’t go there. “On one hand it kind of is an observation of style over substance and an observation of celebrity and people getting rewarded for shady behaviour,” explains Lissie, “So yes I think it makes a valid point about
the music industry. But on the other hand in the song I acknowledge my insecurities that make me need to have an opinion. It’s fair for me to make this statement, but it’s also like a little jealousy.” But this is dangerous territory. People don’t like having their faults thrust in their face and celebrities certainly enjoy this less than most. So, why is it that Lissie’s not worried about any potential backlash? “I don’t know. If I worry about that stuff then I’m not a happy person. I mean I want to be understood. That’s why I make music, because I want
to be understood. Everyone takes from it what they want, you know? (Laughs)But if I think about it like that then I just sit around frustrated. You know people can think whatever they want but they can’t decide who I am just cause they’ve heard one song.” The albums not all social commentary, though, the majority of the album focuses on the topic of romance. “There are a couple of opinionated songs, you know; I’m an opinionated person. But mostly it’s about all my stupid ex-boyfriends who drove me crazy… and who I drove crazy too. You know, I take my fair share of the blame. And that was what was fun about writing this record, because I could be on either side of the situation. I could be like a victim or I could be the one on the other side. I’ve been in a relationship with someone who made me feel taken for granted, but I also think I’ve taken people for granted. The prevailing topic I write about, whether I like it or not, is romance.” So, in a nutshell, what can we expect from Lissie’s latest artistic offering? “The new album is like the word when I’m alone. I wrote it from a perspective where it’s all true and personal, but I have a little distance from the relationships that have inspired the songs. It means that I’ve been able to observe the emotion, so that I can speak about it more objectively.”

(The World’s End)

By Ruby Qaimkhani, September 2013
By Charlotte Grainger, September

By Ruby Qaimkhani, September

Vodafone:
3 Company:
Lebara:
Apps:
Skype:

The Darkness 你还记得那个叫The Darkness的乐队吗?

Kids in Glass Houses
The 1975
Swim Deep 接下来这个乐队是叫做 B-Town(去这个名字是因为 他们这个乐队主要在Digbeth 和Birmingham演奏,听说他 们在那边非常有名),看了他 们的演出我是真的不能明白为 什么。

Wet Nuns
Wet Nuns
Ash
