It’s all for a good cause. /////////////////////////////////////// To get involved contact Anna at giveitago@shef.ac.uk

What? Gulshan Balti House Where? 50 Wicker, S3 8JB What did we eat? Samosas, akharai chicken, boiled rice, chapattis How much? £13.30 for 2 people The verdict: I find the many Indian restaurants and takeaways of Sheffield divided into the mainstream and, the more desirable, traditional. Gulshan is one of the few which falls into the traditional category; cooked to order using Asian-style methods – no prepacked naan breads here. We started with the obligatory samosa; these were not too dry or filling, with crispy yet moist pastry hiding sweetly spiced meat and vegetables. The akharai (my favourite) was created to perfection, not too runny, dry or tomatoey as some can be but the ideal paste-like consistency, with tender chicken pieces the perfect size for scooping up with a chapatti and, quite simply, a taste sensation. As you would hope, the rice was nice and fluffy and the chapattis had obviously been cooked fresh in the kitchen, not just reheated. Left stuffed full and very happy little people, I’ll definitely be returning for more. And they even chucked in some free popadoms and salad.

Today’s the day we have a quick insight into the mind of one of the most sought after Sheffield based illustrators. From his own clothing range to his custom office art pieces, this is one of the guys to watch! First came office spaces, where next? Buckingham Palace? Who knows...
GEO LAW //////////////////////////////////////
How long have you been creating innovative art pieces? I’ve been creating artwork since I was a nipper, if I count random doodles and scribbles as art that is. I suppose I’ve always put pen to paper from a young age as my parents bought me little in toys, but made up for it in video tapes of Tom and Jerry cartoons so my imagination was pretty active.
16
SIVE EXCLU ENT STUD ZINE MAGA CE PIE
Who/where do you take inspiration from? I’m inspired by other peoples work, in particular the Sheffield based artists of Kid Acne and the persona of Pete McKee, these are more recent influences on my outlook on being a freelance illustrator. I’m always inspired by work I see online in blogs and individual portfolios, there’s so much of it out there - it’s tough to pin point exact artists but whatever work leaves an impression on me I take ideas from, but mould my own take on it.
Which piece of work are you most proud of? I’m proud of a lot of my work, as I see each commission and individual project as a progression of style and self. I think personally I’m most proud of the Tea Bath tea towel design I’ve done for the Millennium Galleries - it was for their Teatopia exhibition and the towel was printed by To Dry For. Getting the prototype print sent to my house was a good feeling! Whereabouts can people see your work? People can see my work dotted about on different walls and displays, The Common Room, The Harley, The Wick at Both Ends, Hair Kandi and Paris Sheffield - a new bar I’ve recently worked on. Other places would be online on my website and hopefully in the future I’ll be aiming for more editorial commissions, fingers crossed. How would a budding artist go about owning his own clothing range like yours? Clothing is a very individual thing and the key is to make clothes that have a sense of self and a message that others will be happy to latch on to. So rather than designing for the clients, design for yourself,
design clothes you’d want to wear and if it’s good people will buy and wear it. That’s my take on it. I suppose it’s always good to have some business knowledge or to have a partner; I have little knowledge in business but luckily I have a partner and a small team who contribute to my own label. Sometimes the business side is tedious but it’s part and parcel of fashion, it just has to be done. How do you get your work noticed? Mostly personal promotion or word of mouth? I’m lucky in a way; I’m rubbish at promoting my work but somehow I have people talking about it. I suppose having your work online helps and social networking helps too. Whenever I’ve done a new piece or worked on a recent project I’ll always write about it if it’s good and hopefully people take notice and pass it around. A lot of my work in Sheffield I’ve got from word of mouth, such is the way up in the north, good work should always speak for itself and in my opinion the less you have to talk and explain your work, the better your work suits the commercial world. How would you sum up Hantu Collective in five words? Community, creative, Northern, humble and fun. Ha, sweet - we love Northern. How would you some up yourself in five different words? Hmmm… (that’s not a word), naïve, doodler, odd, relaxed and busy.
What do you expect from Hantu Collective in the future? I’d like Hantu Collective to evolve like any other label, to have more stockists and to sell internationally. Who knows; maybe having a notable celebrity being papped in one of our garms, that’d be nice. What was your last commercial job? The last commercial job was for Cheil Europe in London, they’re part of a bigger ad agency group based in South Korea so they were the biggest client I’ve worked for. They commissioned me to draw murals around their new office space to liven the place up with little characters running around causing mischief, much of what may happen in the office environment.
PIE SHAR RD A WIZ
Geo drawing the infamous werewolf a The Cruicible
Which piece of work have you most enjoyed creating? I enjoy all the live mural pieces I get commissioned for, especially the one at the Hair Kandi studio in Sheffield, as well as a recent commission in London by Cheil Worldwide, an ad agency, I’ve enjoyed these the most because the clients have given me total freedom to do what I want. Giving me this freedom relaxes me and allows me to just create with no hassle.
I’ve seen the Rotherham art space you used to present up and coming artists’ work, what was the strangest art piece there? Haha this is a tough question, I wouldn’t go as far to say any of the work was strange but I like the work of Louise Wheeler, she’s a Graphic Design student and her illustration work is weird but wonderfully drawn. A lot of her exhibited boards are dark and eerie but they’re great because of that! If someone came up to you saying they could draw better than you, and you had a blunt pencil in your right hand and a wet fish in the other, with a choice of stab or slap which would it be? Depends on my mood - if in a bad one, I’d draw, stab and slap, give them a triple whammy. But most of the time I believe there are much better doodlers and artists out there and that’s the reality of it, if people are good at what they do, they shouldn’t be seen as a threat and you respect them. If people aren’t so good and they give it all that, it’s just best to be humble still.

GEO SAYS
GEORGE HAS A FEW TIPS FOR THOSE BUDDING ARTISTS OUT THERE WHO JUST DONT SEEM TO BE GETTING anywhere...
Work hard and be humble, you’ll get noticed if the work is good. The work should do all the talking for you. Experiment with different media and find what works for you Be polite to potential clients but stand up for yourself when negotiating a fee Get a website sorted, it’s criminal these days if you don’t have one as a creative, it also shows initiative Work doesn’t always land on your lap and molly coddle you, don’t sit there with your thumbs twiddling, be productive Carry a notebook/sketchbook with you and at times a diary - it’s good to jot down and keep track of your schedule Be a nice person; being approachable always helps a freelance creative

What’s that I can smell?
The enticingly tasty whiff of freshly flipped batter? Mmm yes, the Day of the Pancake is with us again – 8th March. But there’s just that little problem of making the perfect pancake. Wonder how Mum can whip one up in seconds, but you find yourself stumbling around with a frying pan in a haze of flour and lemon zest? Struggle no more – the gourmet goblins at The Student bring you some foolproof recipes to enlighten even the most infrequent visitors to the kitchen.

skimmed milk, 1 tablespoon sunflower oil
Ingredients: 100g plain flour, 2 eggs, 300ml semi-
1. First mix the batter – put the flour in a mixing bowl and place the eggs, 50ml milk and 1 tablespoon oil in a well in the centre, whisking together (with a fork or whisk), and beat until you have a smooth, thick paste. Add a little milk if too stiff. 2. Add a splash of milk and mix, then continue whisking and adding milk until you have a batter the same consistency as thick single cream. 3. Heat a frying pan on the hob and add a spot of oil, then spoon a bit of the mixture into the pan, tilting the pan around to ensure even coverage of the batter in the pan. 4. Leave to cook for about 30 seconds, then flip over with a spatula or knife and cook the other side for 30 seconds.

You may be under the impression that life as a (sexy) single student is one of drunken shenanigans and more bedtime visitors than taxis on a Saturday night West Street; nights out focused entirely on the aim to pull whichever male specimen is foolish enough to step in the way. The reality (for this girl, anyway) is, in fact, a very different affair. Never will you find me hanging off the arm of a grinning gorm as we stumble back to his. The words ‘one night stand’ aren’t even in my vocabulary. I would be the first to admit that I have rather high standards when it comes to men – why settle for the lower branches when you can have the leaves at the top of the tree? On a night out in town, the parameters of normal social respect seem to vanish the moment you step out of the taxi; those desperate, high on alcohol-induced bravery guys. When in normal, daylight life would it be acceptable to slap a girl’s arse as you pass in the street? Where, exactly, would it be accepted social conduct to ask a girl to “get her rat out”? But it’s not just the boys my attitude towards the male gender (most probably due to the pervy abuse I constantly receive) changes to total bitch as soon as I hit the bars. A harmless (yet pervy), “Alright love?”, receives a dirty glare as I push past to get to the toilets; a tap on the bum produces a rough grab of the hand, thrusted back to its owner, a “Hey sexy…”, at the bar is completely ignored. But it’s the, “I’m God’s gift to women and don’t I know it?”, cocky guys who try and fail spectacularly that really get me angry. I either find myself being shockingly rude to them, or even sometimes leading them on then shooting them down… thinking about it now I feel slightly sorry for them but – if you’re after yet another immature girl to worship the ground you walk on then you’re definitely not going to find it here. Grow some balls, boys; it’s a ruthless, cut-throat world out there. Deal with it.

Stalker Lees Adventure 2 It was one of those events you only find out about three days before, but if it was anything like the last one, I knew it was a definite must. Last time it went on until five and I still can’t remember most of it - shows it must have been good. 9pm saw the start of the night and the journey to Eccy began. Picking some beers up from One Stop, we found you can’t go wrong with eight bottles of Carlsberg, working out at about £9. Off we went to the Stalker Lees residence – dead but the constant reminder that, “It’s only early”, reassured me it would get busier. The sound system supplied by Matt from Soyo was a beast (check out the photo below to see what I’m on about) for a room which could possibly only hold 50 peeps. When the night started to kick off with people turning up, the real DJs came out. A sick DJ I remember winning a competition at Ruby Lounge went off the same at this party - a little musical genius, mixing deep House into Dubstep into RnB; integrating genres together like it was nothing. After some shimmying on the dancefloor/ living area, it somehow turned from 10pm into 3am and the alcohol supplies were running dry, so we, being the only people in there with actual jobs, got a taxi up to Spa for supplies. DJ Dave Venn from Plug had turned up after playing a set with MZ Bratt at Covert (apparently he was trying to persuade her to come but she wasn’t having any of it - maybe next time...). After Dave finished his set, the place near enough cleared out - the only thing I can really say about this night is that Scott Wheeler, you are a mess mate (the way you nearly face planted that bird was legendary). And until the next Stalker Lees adventure – ciao. Stalker Lees thanks to: Dan Oshea Dan Dixon Scott Wheeler

1.5 to 2 inches in height, slender in width and curved in slightly from the heel. A shoe so odd in its appearance that for a long time it has been reserved solely for the self-consciously tall or unwilling bridesmaid. In fact, the Facebook group, ‘Kitten Heels? I’d rather break both my legs in 6 inch platforms, thanks’, has over 10,000 members. You may agree completely, I certainly do, but the kitten heel can no longer be ignored as they creep on to catwalks everywhere. Following fashion’s sudden obsession with 50s and 60s dressing, the shoe popularised by Audrey Hepburn is making a controversial come back. But as they move from catwalk to high street will they be flying off the shelves, or straight into the sale bin? Indeed, the lower heel has health and safety plus points over the towering heels we are now used to. However, do they really do much else for us? No leg lengthening, no calf slimming, no sex appeal. In other words, no power. It cannot be denied that strutting in six inch spikes or parading in platforms supplies the wearer with high voltage ‘Girl Power’ - where else did the term Killer Heels come from? Whether it is right or wrong, we love fashion for how it makes us feel, and kitten heels seem to be leaving us feeling cold. So from Topshop to Manolo Blahnik, hear me, leave the kittens and hold on to your cats.

That’s the one thing I don’t get about some girls, I mean don’t get me wrong I know not all girls are like that, in fact most girls are perfectly nice and don’t want to kill every girl that looks ten metres within the direction of their boyfriend. However the ones that do need a serious reality check, I know there are girls that some of us just don’t trust. But it takes two, and surely the guy is equally if not more in the wrong than a single girl? What happened to ‘girl power’? I’d like to believe that it didn’t die out back in the days of the Spice Girls. I guess love cheats such as Ashley Cole are part to blame for the insecurities that some of us hold. I mean you can’t really blame us, if the likes of Cheryl Cole get cheated on then what chance do us ‘normal girls’ have? If anything it should give girls more of a reason to stick together, not drag us further apart.
iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
The Kitten Heel
Debbie Reilly I always assumed that in this day and age that if need be girls would stick up for girls… apparently I thought wrong. A few days ago I was out with my friends at the pub when this girl ‘started on me’. She didn’t like that I had been talking to her boyfriend, who bearing in mind was an old school friend. As I innocently tried to defend myself, and reason that just because myself or any other girl talks to her boyfriend it doesn’t necessarily mean that we hold an un-dying love for him, or want to get into his pants. She demanded that I go and explain that to her sister because she thinks I fancy him. However tempting it was to go and talk to the girl throwing daggers at me across the bar, I chose not to.

Woah – slow down, Aries, a swift five minutes just doesn’t cut the mustard. Just because you fancy ditching the foreplay and getting straight to the point doesn’t mean everyone else does. Selfishness is most definitely not a desirable attribute in the bedroom – it takes (at least) two to make a party – don’t you go forgetting that.
Ooh – you little sexual stallion. Rough, ready and a lover of all things physical, you love getting down and dirty, anytime and anywhere. And who wouldn’t love to be on the end of all that sensual tension…? You ANIMAL, Taurus. Ooh.

No, Capricorn, getting down and dirty with your hot Business lecturer is not the best idea. Although you may love an older, more experienced partner there are boundaries that should never be crossed. The old lady you see walking to the bus stop every morning is one of them.

Natalie Portman has a history for starring in interesting, obscure and intelligent movies and this one is no exception. This breathtaking performance provides just less than two hours’ worth of intrigue and entertainment. She stars as an obsessive ballerina involved in a New York ballet company who wins the position of Prima Ballerina in Swan Lake. Living with her controlling ex-ballerina mother who has a suffocating control over her life, she is fighting to find the balance between her innocent White Swan nature contrasting against the Black Swan persona she needs to embody to play this role in the production. The competition for this role heightens when threatening new girl ‘Lily’ (Mila Kunis) joins the company, personifying the very nature of the Black Swan. Forging an unhealthy friendship, Nina (Portman) begins to realise her dark side which becomes a dangerous segment of her personality, portrayed through hysteria, paranoia and tears.
MOVIES //////////////////////////////////////
This film pushes the somewhat elitist art form of ballet into the mainstream, encouraging those whom would normally stray away from such ‘cultured’ pastimes to take a dip into the unknown, to introduce themselves to an interesting style of life. It removes itself from the typical expectations of a documentary-style ballet film and dramatises it into a Hollywood dream, making it far more appealing to the masses. This does not, however, remove the beauty, grace and elegance of the art form with the music, dancing and photography-style, monochromatic shooting.

Director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, Requiem for a Dream) selected Natalie Portman for the lead role in the film before the screenplay for Black Swan was even finished. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Portman studied ballet as a child and continued dancing throughout her life as a means of staying in shape. This made her a perfect choice to play Nina.

The Kings Speech (12A)
In cinemas now, student discount available, valid NUS card must be shown for telephone bookings at Cineworld Centertainment, call 0871 200 2000. I have to admit, I wasn’t too convinced by the idea of this film to begin with. The idea of a dramatic film based on the life of a reluctant king, for which I was expected to pay some of my hard earned cash to go and see was a little bizarre... I stopped studying history back at GCSE as I found it pretty dull. However, convinced by a girlfriend, off we went. To my surprise, I was entertained and even amused by this historical rendition. The take on this set of events is surprisingly funny, complete with a few laugh-outloud moments. The likeable characters absolutely make the film; Colin Firth as King George IV is both awkward and loveable, and the ‘Doctor’ (Geoffery Rush) assisting in curing his condition is down to earth, unorthodox and generally a nice bloke. Throughout the film you see a side to the monarchy that you would not generally consider, the humanity and personal choice of it, the effects it has on the real people involved, encouraging you to empathise with the people who didn’t necessarily choose their life course, whom we mere peasants would not normally come into contact with. Ending at the start of the war, it felt as though his speech impediment might have been just about cured but his reign as king was in its infancy and I wanted to experience the rest of it. The ending left me hankering for more, meaning that it somehow didn’t feel complete; I wanted more speeches, more events and generally more information.
Gnomeo & Juliet (U)
In cinemas now, student discount available, valid NUS card must be shown for telephone bookings at Cineworld Centertainment, call 0871 200 2000
We have seen the life that bugs live in ‘A Bug’s Life’, the way that ogres and fairytale creatures live in ‘Shrek’ and even the way that toys spend their time when we mere humans are not in the room in ‘Toy Story’, but now, here comes (drum roll please) the story of the common garden gnome, well, kind of. ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’ follows the typical animated comedy plot line of love, humour, turmoil and hurdles to overcome, with plenty of celebrity voices and, of course, the characters only come to life once the humans are out of the picture, but this time, all within the lines of garden ornaments.

Greatest Hits So Far
Bruno Mars
Doo-Wops and Hooligans Bruno Mars appeared seemingly from nowhere and burst onto the scene with ‘Just The Way You Are’, taken from his new album ‘Doowops and Hooligans’. After doing a bit of research, I managed to find out who he was and what we were to expect from him. Finally January came and with it, came the release of his debut album. Speaking to a few friends, I realised I wasn’t the only one who had fallen in love with him from the first song or two; many of my acquaintances had been awaiting his album and were as excited as me to hear it for the first time. Now, it is far too commonplace that artists put out their best song as a single and follow up with a less than adequate album; thankfully, Bruno Mars is the exception. The album is packed with lyrically interesting, relaxing and also upbeat tracks. It’s the kind of album you put on then dance around to some of it, intently listen to other parts and then wonder why it’s stopped playing when there’s no way you could have listened to it all. It has been brilliantly produced to capture the listener with his beautiful voice. The winning song for me has to be ‘Liquor Store Blues’ featuring Damian Marley, whose instantly recognisable voice complements Mr Mars’ perfectly. But I do have a love for ‘The Lazy Song’ too... Buy it!
Now, normally I am a serious rebel against greatest hits albums. They are generally a con into encouraging those ‘biggest fan’ types to buy a new album when the artist cannot be bothered to produce something new for their listeners, rehashing old records into one and asking people to buy songs they already have in their collection. However, I am a huge fan of P!nk and her career so far but haven’t managed to buy all of her albums, meaning this is ideal for me and if you are in the same boat as me, greatest hits albums are great. They remove the concern over paying for an album which, let’s be honest, you will probably only listen to half of more than once due to the quality of the tracks (perhaps showing something about the standard of the artists I like), and provide you with only the best music from that artist. P!ink is a strong, powerful female who doesn’t really give a damn what people think of her, does her own thing and looks great doing it. She has a range of songs, which until you see the track listing from this album, is hard to comprehend or remember all of them. This is a concise way of hearing her absolute best tracks all in one place. I love all the songs on here, plus if you buy hard copy (rather than downloading) you get a DVD so you have some visuals to enjoy also. Bonus. Available at www.hmv.com Price : £14.99 free UK delivery

Tourist History
Two Door Cinema Club have, let’s be honest, a bit of a daft name which really is a mouthful to spit out. Thankfully, the Bangor-born Irish group are hell-bent on producing electro-pop which somehow seems to entice the teenage romance out of the woodwork. Endorsed by Kanye West, this slightly geeky looking group have managed to produce an album exploding with short, sharp (just over three minutes each) tracks which cheekily poke their way into your head. The youthful trio have a sunny outlook on everything, positive or negative, and you simply can’t fault it. Coming from years of touring the small circuit, their number has finally come up with this top forty album. Unfortunately, it is not a ground breaking original album with definite Bloc Party style vibes running throughout, but nevertheless that does not detract from the album being a good listen. The album has definite flashes of greatness and I am very much looking forward to the second album when they should have developed their personal sound in tune with their quality song writing. I am struggling to select a top track from this album but would suggest it works best as a whole album, played as loud as possible for optimum enjoyment. PABLO CLARK SUPERMARKET DJs 23 year old pup
who was your inspiration to start dj’ing?
I started in music at about the age of 14, playing in a few bands at school; we got on a course at Red Tape studios in Sheffield and I got more interested in the studio than the indie music. As that took over I got more into electronic sounds, listening a lot to Nightmares On Wax, stuff like Aphex Twin and early Groove Armada. I think I fully decided I wanted to be in dance music when I saw Justice at Plug about five or six years ago they were amazing! Loud, angry and heavy! Check out a track called Stress! GET’ME. My first gig was at Secret Sessions, which if you don’t know about you should (search on Facebook) and it’s gone on from that first slot. I now play at Nocturnal and big Sheffield night Squelch & Clap @ The Harley, under the alias Supermarket DJs.
when and where was your favourite DJ set?
! DIPLO
The best set I have played was at a night called ElectroSexual about three years ago. It was mad; I started at about 3am and the place went mental Everyone was jumping about, on the tables, even in a mini mosh pit, but to be fair there have been a few! I played an awards show in London last year that was different, and of course all of the Squelch & Claps have been great parties. Oh and NYE @ Secret Sessions - that were a good’un. One of the best sets I have seen was Toddla T @ the Warehouse Project two years ago (STEEL CITY VIBES) and Skream @ Wax:On at the O2 - that was dark!
www.myspace.com/diplo
what is your favourite crowd pleasing floorfiller?
The top tune for me at the moment is Jan Driver - Gain Reaction, but to be fair Congorock - Babylon is a right weapon, so is Cassius - I Love You So (Skream Remix).
if you could take any item with you on to a desert island what would it be?
I’m not the biggest sun dweller in the world so it would have to be an umbrella, but I’d more than likely take a satellite phone, so I could call someone to pick me up and take me back to Sheffield.
if you could mate with any human being who would it be?
Just one? Well, it would have to be Rihanna or Megan Fox… hmm I think the Fox would get the final selection.
WHEN ARE YOU NEXT PLAYING? Come and check out monthly night Squelch & Clap @ The Harley. I’ll also be playing at Nocturnal and a few new venues in Sheffield, but I can’t say much about them yet!
