WELCOME .................................................................................... Creeeeeak… the first door of the advent calendar opens and out pops a special treat – it’s the December issue of The Student Magazine!

SHEFFIELD

Director Hussain Shafique Editor Kate Hobson

We’re packed with festive frivolities this month, including a whole lot of Christmas cheer in the shape of our Gift Guide to solve all your present conundrums, and our alternative 12 Days of Christmas (no geese a-laying here). But that’s not all that’s packed in our stocking; we had a gossip with blonde babe Sarah from ITV2’s addictively good ‘Girlfri3nds’, plus Capital FM report back on their celeb-filled Christmas lights switch on at Meadowhall, and we’ve complied the ultimate Property feature to assist you house hunters on all the best places for next year. Of course we also have all your faves – reviews, Studentstrology, fashion, blogs, gadgets… the list goes on. And, of course, flip over to find our Chinese version.

Sub Editor Josie Li

Prepare your tinsel and jump in for a bauble-filled fest of festive frolics – have a fabulous Christmas and see you in the New Year!

............................................................................................................................... As you read this, you’re probably thinking that this is just an ordinary student magazine. Packed full of fascinating snippets of editorial, reviews, gossip and competitions, of course, but there’s not anything too mind-blowing about that. Look a bit closer, however, and you’ll discover that this particular issue holds something just a little bit more unique within its pages. With this first issue of the new academic year, The Student Magazine launches Fully Augmented Reality, a way of adding virtual little extra treats to the paper pages themselves. As one of the first magazine companies within the Yorkshire area to bring this to the student population, we’re excited to be on the frontline of new media – and you lucky readers are some of the first in the UK to be treated to this! ‘But what exactly is this reality stuff?’, I hear you ask. It’s simple - the technology brings the pages to life via your very own smartphone. It’s easy to get to grips with - simply follow these points:

1. Download the free ‘Layar’ app 2. Open app 3. Hover your phone over a participating page in the magazine as it scans the page 4. Discover various buttons popping up on your screen, which could be anything from a link to a website, to a Facebook page, video clip or even an exclusive reader offer

Your reading experience will never be the same as we bring print bang up to date, allowing you to get fully involved in our features and adverts, discovering much more than what you simply see on the page.

All that’s left to do is welcome you to our extra special pages and invite you to jump in with both feet – get scanning and who knows what you might discover?

There’s no need to stray away from University this Month - with so much going on you’d be a fool to leave the comfort of the union...

HALLAM UNIVERSITY Rag Week Rag Week, 3rd – 9th December Rag Week is back again this year, packed full of exciting activities to help raise money for charity. Every wanted to bungee jump? Now’s your chance for just £50 donated to RAG, or if that sounds like your worst nightmare, then why not take part in a dance off? One event planned called Lost will blindfold you and take you to an unknown location from where you will have to find your way back; a fun activity designed to test your sense of direction. And if all that sounds like a bit too much there is always the sleepover at the Hubs on the Friday of Rag Week, planned to help raise awareness of homelessness in Sheffield. Get your sleeping bags at the ready for a night full of entertainment and food, all for an excellent cause.

Christmas Fair and Show Tickets £2, 9th December 3pm-9pm in the Hubs will be a wonderful Christmas fair, with the chance to visit many different stalls, sample some festive fancies and take part in some Christmas themed fundraising. There will be also plenty of information provided about upcoming events and opportunities through the Rag committee. Expect a Christmas show from 7-8pm put on by the societies committee, bound to be worth watching! Tickets are only £2 and all proceeds go to Rag. A brilliant, chilled out event to start making you feel Christmassy this December.

Lincoln Christmas Market

Recommends

Lincoln Christmas Market, 8th December f you haven’t already visited Lincoln then this is your chance; it really is an enchanting place full of history, culture and it is bound to make you feel ready for the festive season. The lovely city, with its beautiful cathedral, medieval square and ancient castle, around this time of year plays host to over 250 stalls making up the Christmas market. A ticket for this event costs £12 for travel and is a great way to spend some recreational time away from University. Mulled wine and minced pies will be plentiful and it’s an excellent time to start your Christmas shopping away from the hustle and bustle of Meadowhall.

Capital FM Backstage Gossip Each month Adam O’Neill brings us all the celeb-packed news and gossip from 105 Capital FM HQ. He’s on Capital across Yorkshire every afternoon between 4-7pm! Am I allowed to say it yet? HAPPY CHRISTMAS! This month it’s all about the backstage gossip at the big gig we threw at Meadowhall for 15,000 people as their lights got turned on for Christmas 2012! My show came live from backstage, and I spoke to all the artists before they headed out to the screams… The Wanted didn’t want to talk about anything other than Jess Ennis - I let slip that she was coming on stage as a surprise guest, and Max’s eyes immediately lit up! “Jess Ennis is well fit! Buzzing that she’s here”! The Lawson boys were performing too, and announced that they’d be coming back

14.

www.thestudentmag.co.uk

to Sheffield next year on their ‘Chapman Square’ tour – playing the 02 Academy in February 2013. Local lad Ryan let slip it was really weird to be doing a gig at Meadowhall, having spent pretty much every weekend of his teenage years shopping there! I asked him what he loved about Sheffield and he divulged, “Mum’s cooking, friends and Meadowhall – and this concert is by far the most exciting thing to ever happen in a car park”! Misha B, who’d just finished touring with Nicki Minaj the night before, was buzzing doing one of her final gigs before she headed off to America to finish her album. She was also spotted backstage riding round on a kid’s scooter… Misha B don’t walk! I caught up with her about

her album and she promised we should be hearing it in March 2013. She was heading back to America to finish the album and was hoping that it will be all complete in time for Christmas. And perhaps the biggest moment of the night was the surprise performance from Lucy Spraggan – as her very first public appearance since leaving The XFactor, it was like her homecoming, and the crowd went crazy for her! She performed the ‘Beer Fear’ tune and also an exclusive never-heard-before song called ‘Safe’, which she hinted would be released next year. I grabbed Lucy as she came off stage and she gasped, “That was the most amazing 10 minutes of my life”!

SARAH TAYLOR From

Girlfri3nds

Every girl wants to meet their prince, but the dating world is one fraught with kissing a few too many frogs. Cue ‘Girlfri3nds’, ITV2’s hit series whereby three girls meet 100 boys, choose six to date and narrow down their choices to just one lucky guy. Single girls Sarah, Laura and Amy took part in the show, each finding a guy each – Sarah chose suave footballer Danny, Laura favoured the handsome Frenchman Ken and Amy picked cheeky Charlie. We caught a few minutes with local Sheffield lass, Sarah Taylor, for some cheeky goss about the show and to find out what happened next. How did you get involved in the show? Basically they kind of came to me. I’d seen this thing on this website, and it said, ‘Could you date loads of men?’, and I just had a laugh, I’d had a drink that night and I was like, what woman wouldn’t want to date a hundred guys? And then I just put like a smiley face and a row of kisses! I never sent anything off saying I want to be involved in the show, I never applied for it, and they were just like, ‘oh yeah, we need to see you’, so I went down to London and that’s how it happened. So you didn’t know Laura and Amy before you started the show? Oh no, the first time we met was on camera. Wow really, on the show you looked like you got on really well, really close friends. So do you still talk to them? Yeah, I talk to them every day and I see them every week, we do PAs and stuff, so we’re all over the place at the minute with stuff. So you’re really busy after the show? You came to Sheffield last Tuesday? Yeah, we did a PA at Viper Rooms, and then I’m absolutely everywhere, I was in Newcastle on Sunday with the guys from Geordie Shore, you know, Gaz and that other guy, Scott, and they were right good fun! Did you think you would find the love of your life through the show? I didn’t go into the show with any expectations whatsoever, you know I never really expected anything from it, I just thought; it’s a different way to meet a hundred guys isn’t it? And I think it’s a bit cliché meeting guys in bars, it was just a good laugh and I thought, why not, go for it, have it! Did you find the process difficult, to narrow down your guys to one? Oh, yeah! Why did you choose Danny over everyone else? I think it’s just the fact that I got along with him better, I kind of had a bit of a connection with Danny. Was it really awkward having to play out your dates in front of the camera? Do you think it made a difference? Yes, especially that one with Mitch, I felt really, really, really bad, and then I said to him, ‘Oh, will we be friends and stuff’, and he was like, ‘Oh no no no, I don’t want anything to do with you’! He pulled his camera off and everything, he said, ‘I’ve got enough mates’ and he was really upset. I was proper in an awkward situation. Did you have any fights for the same men? No never, it wasn’t really about that. Yes I suppose you all liked different things, you weren’t really attracted to the same people? Yeah because Sam and Danny [two of Sarah’s chosen guys] went on dates with Laura and Amy, and I just thought to myself, you know if Laura likes him or whatever, I’ll just kind of back up, you know what I mean?

There was no jealousy amongst us three, you know some people say three’s a crowd, but seriously it’s not, I can’t say I’m closer to Amy or I’m closer to Laura, I just love them both the same. Were you worried the guys were only interested to be on TV? Yeah well, I was, to be fair, I made a bad choice really, with picking Danny. I’ve never seen him since the show, he was supposed to come and meet me that weekend after the show, and he said to me that he was going to come to my house that weekend, and he never came up, and ignored my texts for two weeks, so then that said it all. And then I found out that he’s done ‘Love Machine’ and he’s been an extra on TOWIE and I just thought, ‘oh I’ve proper made a mistake here’, but never mind… But Amy and Charlie are still together, Laura and Ken, they’re not. Oh really? Laura seemed to really be in love with Ken! Yeah, he’s a lovely lad, but I think he’s just a bit - there wasn’t enough going off for Laura, she likes somebody to keep her on her toes. She’d just walk all over him. What was the best part of the experience? I can’t really say, erm - I’d say I was more nervous for the dates with the lads, going on six dates to start off with, I was really nervous about that bit. But I’d say that was the most exciting part, doing some different activities, getting to know somebody. I had some really, really good days; I mean I went to Bournemouth, I went all up and down the country on these dates and what I was most nervous about was going to their houses, I absolutely like shit bricked, when I had to meet the family and stuff! I can imagine, normally you probably wouldn’t do that, so early! Exactly, it wouldn’t happen! But I mean, knowing a man two months and then meeting his family, for a Chinese and stuff, like all in all I’ve only met the guys like three or four times, so yeah, that was a bit surreal like. Will there be a follow up programme to see how you’ve got on? I don’t know, there might be, I can’t really say, you never know really. Me, Laura and Amy are doing a show tomorrow, we’re all doing a bungee jump, but that’s just like a documentary to see how your body reacts to putting you through like adrenaline rushes and stuff, I think that’ll be coming on air soon. Quickie Qs Where did you wake up this morning? In my bed! Any secret celebrity crushes? I wouldn’t say it’s a secret as he knows about it - Mark Wright Describe yourself in three words? Very random, funny and loyal Any hidden talents? I’ve got a Level 1 BSL, which is sign language If you were a pizza, what would be your topping? It’s definitely got to be margarita Follow Sarah on Twitter for all the latest gossip about the Girlfri3nds! @Sarahtaylor1297

Sex and the Steel City December By Kate Hobson Published December 2012 When is it acceptable to dress up? At Christmas time, of course. Out come the sexy santas, cute little reindeers and cheeky elves; fallen angels, naughty fairies and perhaps even the odd rolling Christmas pud. The festive season is a chance to embrace all that is cliché and, if we’re being brutally honest, just a little bit trashy. Hitting the streets in a white tutu, silver tinsel and not much else would at any other time be a major no-no, but the season of goodwill is your chance to rock the body glitter and blindingly glimmering accessories, and no one cares. Christmas time is your chance to embrace your inner glitter love, your secret passion for all that is kitsch and sex up the festive frolics with a little bit of Mrs Santa adorned flash of leg. And why leave the red and white outfits simply to parties? A little bit of mistletoe and brandy cream wouldn’t be out of place in the bedroom… a cheeky bit of dress up will never go amiss. For some reason a spell in the hot pants adds a certain amused thrill to the duvet games, allowing your time in the bedroom to never get boring. And there’s no need need to feel body conscious – yes, you look ridiculous but just make sure no photographic evidence is taken and you’ll be safe. As no one wants to see your tinsel thong emblazoned all over Facebook.

Butterz Takeover with Bok Bok / D Double E By Laura Keen Published December 2012 Less than six weeks into third year and the essays have stacked up, reading week has lost all sight of being a week off, and the atmosphere in general is purely apocalyptic. And then Butterz announces a takeover at Plug… at £4 a ticket for students it would be rude not to. It’s very rare you can see a line up this huge at such a small price, and with Royal T supporting we snapped up our tickets. Due to the Arctic weather conditions, we stocked up on pre-drinks and barricaded ourselves in until our beer coats were thick enough to brave the outside. Once sufficiently intoxicated we jumped in taxis and headed straight for Plug. It was relatively quiet for a Friday, which was a shame considering just how big the line up was. This aside, they prevailed with their usual Friday night prices and at only £2 for a double and mixer, we stocked up and headed straight for the small room. Butterz residents were already warming up as we arrived, and with their commercially influenced grime style they were getting the small crowd moving. The only downfall was how small the queue at the bar was… temptation was all too much and by 1am we were steaming. Then Royal T took to the decks and dropped some real grimy garage; the crowd were eating out of his hands. The crowd quickly tripled in size, and as Royal T extended his set the atmosphere was insane. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen (drinking) circumstances, one by one everyone made a swift back door exit. By 2:30am it became clear that I was the last man standing and definitely the worst for wear. I followed in suit and headed to the taxi rank. A quality night at Plug, it’s just a shame not to see a bigger turnout!

Dreaming of a Lousy Christmas Film By Yasmine Gleghorn Published December 2012 You might’ve noticed the tell-tale signs: bright lights, incessant ads and the same CD being played at your supermarket over and over again. There are only so many times “Walking in a Winter Wonderland” can go unnoticed. Christmas is finally here. Well, it’s realistically been around since November, but you get the drift. And what do we also get at this magical time of the year? Presents? Family meals? A big bruise from slipping on ice? That’s all standard. What I’m referring to is the joy of Christmas movies. They’re bombarded on TV and eventually find their way into cinemas. You might’ve detected a hint of cynicism, but it happens to the best of us. Growing up in the 90s and early 00s, I was exposed to a multitude of cringe-worthy films that would’ve been watched, panned and thrown away like a bad sweater vest from your Nan if they had come out during any other time of the year. But Christmas has an eerie magic that makes bad films rise from the dead and come back year after year to haunt us. Why else would anyone let Vince Vaughn come back in Fred Claus? Who planned to suck away our holiday joy every year with 18 different Nativity stories? My personal vendetta goes against Arnold Schwarzenegger for ever attempting family comedy in 1996 film Jingle All The Way. And Junior. Or Kindergarten Cop. The last two aren’t Christmas films, but they’re still bad enough to get on people’s nerves. Everyone has their own list. Some people will hate Jim Carrey’s Grinch, others might hate Ben Affleck in Surviving Christmas. There’s also those so-bad-but-delightfully-bizarre films that you can’t really believe were ever made, like Santa Claus Conquers the Martians or The Star Wars Holiday Special. Even George Lucas was appalled by that one. So if you go to the cinema this Christmas, stick to a normal premiere. Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit is out on December 14th and will be great ways to kick start the holidays. It’s either that or the ex-governor of California chasing after a toy. You decide.

Sports Personality of the Year By Tom Hardy Published December 2012 Later this month the nation will be rounding up what has been an incredible year for British sport. That’s right; get your telephones at the ready as the Sports Personality of the Year award approaches. After what must’ve been such a successful event at the BBC’s new Salford-based home in 2011, they’ve now decided to move it to London, but anyway, that’s irrelevant. I worked on a BBC SPOTY event in the build-up to the awards last December, and you wouldn’t believe the amount of effort that goes into preparing for it. There’s no doubt that the London Olympics have had a direct impact on the award, which becomes apparent as the shortlist has been increased from ten to twelve sportsmen and women. It’s amazing really as in years gone by the list probably could have been shortened! People are whispering names such as Ennis, Farah, Murray and Simmonds, but my vote will be going to a ‘mod’ with an incredible set of sideburns. No, it’s not Noel Gallagher. It is of course Bradley Wiggins, and despite the impressive facial hair, this alone isn’t enough to win him the award, unfortunately. However, to be the first Brit to win the Tour de France and then follow that up with an Olympic Gold in the same year ain’t bad. To put it simply, I think ‘Wiggo’ is the ultimate athlete and I’d dread to even think what his training schedule must be like in order to achieve what he has. Despite Mark Cavendish winning SPOTY last year, I don’t think many would begrudge the fellow two-wheeled superstar claiming the prize this time round. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, but as the title says, it’s about personality. That must single out Andy Murray straight away.

Your ability to think outside the box could be to your advantage this holiday season. Strive to be different and make home-made presents. The sentiment will be appreciated.

Wow - how do you do it, Aries? You’re the most enthusiastic person ever! This season you’ll get everybody into the spirit even if you have to drag the cheer out of them!

We get that you like a good debate, Gemini, but be warned, debating the state of British politics over turkey trimmings is not a good idea. Just saying.

Not everybody enjoys the build-up to the festivities; you need to be there for people who get a little depressed by it all. Don’t worry, it’s in your nature to care for people, Pisces.

Your instincts will lead you to want to help others this year, Taurus. Embrace it, you’re naturally warm hearted and need to help. They do say charity is good for the soul, after all!

Don’t exceed your bank balance this season, Cancer. You naturally like to make people feel special but spending too much on gifts is unnecessary. They do say it’s the thought that counts!

A Christmas karaoke sesh down at your local is calling you, Leo, and we at The Student Magazine can’t resist either! Just please avoid Mariah Carey’s, ‘All I Want For Christmas is You’, you may be a talent but nobody should sing that song but the Diva herself!

Ah, what a joy it is to have the entire family over to celebrate the holidays… or not. They’re loud, they argue and your granny always drinks too much sherry. Unfortunately, it might fall to you to keep the peace.

The undiscovered joy of the Christmas night out is there for you, Sagittarius. It may be Christmas Eve, it may leave you with the mother of all hangovers when your younger sibling wakes you up at 5am on Christmas Day, but it’s so worth it!

All we’re going to say, Virgo, is that there is most definitely such a thing as too many Christmas lights. It’s not classy, it’s just plain tacky and you’re so much better than that. Less is more!

Family traditions may just desert you this month, Scorpio. Everybody’s growing up and moving on. It’s natural. History has proved time and time again that those who are resistant to change get left behind. Nobody wants to be left behind.

You’re a natural high flyer and normally that’s great, but it could be a bad thing as we reach the Christmas season. Slow down and have some fun!

BITES

Our hungry beasts bring you the lowdown on the city’s top student eateries

Orient Express

290 Glossop Road, Sheffield, S10 2HS 0114 728 260 www.orientx.co.uk

............................................................................ It all started with Chinese students. Whether it was the desire to study at a foreign university or a love for all things British, 7000 young Chinese people now call Sheffield their home. Sadly, everyone misses their mum’s cooking from time to time. And that’s trickier to come by if your family is halfway across the world. When couple Kevin and Yedda Fung realised these hungry students had to eat somewhere, they opened the Orient Express on Glossop Road. And boy does it keep them happy. Located in the heart of Sheffield’s university quarter, the restaurant that used to be K-Pasa still retains many features from its previous owners. The bold red and white décor along with a ceiling decorated with fluffy white clouds aren’t exactly a Chinese staple, but the clientele don’t seem to mind. The vast eating area was full of young Chinese, but guests from more European backgrounds filed in as the evening progressed. As I sat down, a beaming waiter came with cutlery and a steaming bowl full of warm prawn crackers. Used to dodgy takeaways, I hadn’t realised I was missing out on how good freshly made prawn crackers could really be. If this was the free food that came before the meal, I couldn’t wait to see what else Orient Express had in store. My friend and I decided to start with a Combination Platter (£6.50), a large sharer option that includes won ton, spring rolls, prawn toast and spare ribs. Not too daunting in size, it was enough to settle our stomachs until the next. We also had to get another round of prawn crackers - which really are fantastic. After the starter, my friend went for a more traditional approach and ordered Duck Curry (£6). I ventured a little out of my comfort zone and got Mixed Seafood Hot Pot (£7.50). This is a Cantonese speciality, with a choice of rice or noodles and other goodies baked in an earthenware pot like a small tagine. Reluctant to have fish at the best of times, I was pleasantly surprised by the taste and how warm everything was. My friend enjoyed his dish and commented on how good the different textures were. For the more adventurous, there are other dishes like a Spare Ribs and Chicken Feet Clay Pot (£6.50), Aubergines stuffed with Prawns and Black Bean Sauce (£8.00) and Pei Pa Bean Curd (£7.50). While there isn’t much for dessert, the Yee Kwan ice cream and sorbet in four flavours went down a treat (£2.80 a two-scoop bowl). All together (including drinks), a three course meal for two came up to £31.60.

If dining out doesn’t appeal to you, Orient Express also deliver. There’s a 10% discount if you collect in store and free delivery for orders over £20. Reasonably priced food, a pleasant (if not completely authentic) atmosphere and friendly staff, this restaurant is perfect for stepping outside preconceived notions and acquiring new takes on traditional Chinese cuisine. We’re only sorry if you don’t appreciate your usual chicken satay after eating here.

The Harley

334 Glossop Road, Sheffield, S10 2HW www.theharley.co.uk

............................................................................ What do you do when the endless chart thumpers, vodka shots and strobe lights get old and you just want to embrace something new, something unique and individual, which goes against the grain? Admittedly, those sorts of places are not always as easy to find as you think they are. They are like the diamonds in the rough, an oasis amidst the ear splitting tunes and endless Jäger bomb special deals. If this is the sort of place you are looking for, then The Harley is a must! Located a stone’s throw away from the main artery of Sheffield, West Street, The Harley is practically legend amongst the students of Sheffield. This is for a good reason. When it comes to bucking the curve and breaking out on your own, as far as Sheffield is concerned, The Harley has no equal. It’s particularly famous for staying open to the wee hours of the morning (usually around 6am or so) at weekends, with wicked alternative music. They’re equally as famous for their music specific regular events such as ‘Thirsty Ear’ (A Sheffield based DJ collective who specialise in hip hop, funk and reggae music, among others, and play the first Saturday of every month) and ‘Xrayhorse’ (a rock/indie live music night every second Saturday of the month). As well as specific music nights The Harley hosts a whole roster of other events including comedy nights, quizzes and the increasingly popular Speak-Easy Swing Night, a great learning curve for those interested in the art of Swing! However great tunes and flowing booze are not the only things the Harley is known for; it’s also a first class food joint. They’re particularly famous for their succulent, juicy burgers that just ooze taste and flavour. Particular highlights include ‘The Big Cheese’ (£7.95), smothered in so many different types of cheese they’ll make your arteries clog and ‘The Ringstinger’ (£6.90), a burger combining the spicy hot tastes of Salsa and Red Lentils to provide that extra bite. Alternatively they have a build-a-burger service, where you can make it to your own specifications. The Harley is more than just a bar, it’s a Steel City institution! It’s catered to those of us who stray from the mainstream and will continue to do so for years to come.

The Master

15, Drama Director: Paul Thomas Anderson

...............................................................................

Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) is washed up; a sex-obsessed naval veteran who returns home from the Second World War suffering from post-traumatic stress. Unemployable and unable to adapt to post-war life, Freddie becomes a hopeless drunk drifter -that is, until he arrives in the company of the charismatic, occasionally enigmatic Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Dodd is the leader of a fledgling cult named The Cause, taking a shine to Freddie and making it his goal to free him from his troubled past.

With The Master, Paul Thomas Anderson has confirmed his position as the greatest film-maker of the past thirty years. And whilst There Will Be Blood will, for now, remain his crowning achievement, there is more than enough in The Master to leave cineastes in awe. Anderson, who both scripted and directed, has described the film as being “short on plot but big on character”, and what character! Each shot is rich in luxurious colour and language, and in the two and a half hour running time not a second is wasted. Our two protagonists are fortunately inhabited by two of the finest actors working in Hollywood today, and both have produced their finest work here. So engrossing is The Master’s character and characterisation, things like the flawless period detail - which for any other director would be a defining feature - here become a glorious footnote. Also worth mentioning is Johnny Greenwood’s sublime score, his second for Anderson - once again the Radiohead guitarist’s work becomes an additional character and adding a punch of modernity to what is essentially a very old fashioned style of film. The Master? He really is.

This final part of the saga won’t be winning over any new fans, but it is the best of the bunch. Both Stewart and Pattinson now know their roles inside out, and Condon is adept at giving the target audience exactly what they want. Great Expectations Rated: 15, Drama Director: Mike Newall

..................................................................................................................................................................

OK class, we should all know the plot of Great Expectations, but for those of you who have been living under a rock since, well, the late nineteenth century, here’s a recap. Naive waif Pip (Jeremy Irvine) first falls afoul of wanted criminal Magwitch (Ralph Fiennes) and then his sister, Mrs Joe (Sally Hawkins). Pip then spends some time babysitting spinster-supreme, Mrs Havisham (Helena Bonham Carter) in her decrepit mansion, which is where he first encounters his love interest, Estella (Holliday Grainger). Pip then moves to London where he is to become a man of great expectations, but his past continues to haunt him, and Estella remains in his thoughts. The difficulty adapting Dickens is manifold; it has been done countless times before, Great Expecta-

tions definitively so by David Lean. Also, due to the nature of nineteenth century publishing, the story is inherently episodic, which works great in a BBC drama, but is tricky on the big screen. This adaptation has a notable pedigree though; Newall has proved himself in the past, and the screenplay was penned by David Nicholls of One Day fame. Add acting talent like Bonham Carter, Hawkins and Robbie Coltrane to the mix and you ought to have an adaptation for the ages. Unfortunately not, however, the film feels lifeless; the pacing is way off, the direction ham-fisted. With the exception of Ralph Fiennes, the talent is universally glib, even Helena ‘I was born to play Miss Havisham’ Bonham Carter, feels subdued in what is essentially the role she’s been playing for Tim Burton for years. Do yourself a favour and just re-watch the Lean version.

BEATS Get your ears wagging with our three latest album reviews. plus our dirty downloads to get the rave jumping!

Calvin Harris 18 Months

Ne-Yo R.E.D

Over the last year, Calvin Harris has established himself as an architect of the electronic dance revolution that has grasped the pop scene in full force. His third studio album, 18 Months, is a raving concoction of supreme production skills and epic vocals from some of the kingpins of the industry.

Despite his recent flirtations with dance music, sweet singing soul-man Ne-Yo is going back to his R&B roots with his fifth studio album, R.E.D., (Realising Every Dream).

Prior to release, the album already succeeded in dominating the charts with six major hits. The first single, ‘Bounce’ featuring Kelis, was a commercial success, and the second single, ‘We Found Love’, featuring international superstar, Rihanna, topped the charts in 25 countries and won an MTV Video Music Award. Harris has also released tracks from the album with the likes of vocal powerhouse, Florence Welch, Ne-Yo and Example. So, aside from the songs we’ve heard, what does the album have to offer? Whilst none seem match up to the pop euphoria of Florence and Rihanna, the witty flow of ‘Drinking from the Bottle’, featuring London rapper, Tinie Tempah, is a worthy effort. With its dubstep twist, ‘Here 2 China’ featuring Dizzee Rascal is heaps of fun, and ‘Thinking About You’, featuring Jordanian singer/songwriter, Ayah Marar, has definite dance floor potential. Fillers like ‘Mansion’, ‘School’ and ‘Awooga’ are a stark reminder that while Mr. Harris always plays his cards right when it comes to collaborations, without the army of A-list artists infiltrating his tracks, 18 Months would lack serious character and depth. With only minor vocal cameos throughout, the Scotsman seems almost absent throughout the album, playing more of the producer role than ever before. Yet, clearly designed with the dance floor in mind, we can’t really argue with Harris’ decision to leave the vocals to the pop elite and stick to his forte – mixing those notorious beats.

BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge 2012

The 19 track recording does indeed have its Ibiza moments in pulsating tracks such as, ‘Let Me Love You’, ‘Shut Me Down’ and ‘Forever Now’, but the remainder is a testament to his song-writing ability and a reminder that he certainly isn’t compromising his style in order to make a quick buck or two. Musing over his experiences of love, money and fame, the opening track ‘Cracks In Mr. Perfect’ is an honest introduction, soaked in 60s soul. Sultry slow-jams like ‘Lazy Love’ and ‘Should Be You’, featuring Fabolous and Diddy, are instant favourites that highlight the singer’s lyrical ability and effortlessly cool flows. Ne-Yo’s collaborative efforts throughout the album showcase everyone from weed-wild rapper, Wiz Khalifa, in Hip-Hop tinged track, ‘Don’t Make Em Like You’, to country marvel, Tim McGraw in the guitar laden duet, ‘She Is’. R.E.D. skirts the borders of several genres, from stripped-back acoustic to anthemic dance – and in this instance, Ne-Yo’s impulse to toy with diversity is lucratively executed. The album is strung together by suave and sophisticated tracks that lyrically cut much deeper than generic R&B and sonically result in a well-balanced record.

The Radio 1 team are back with their seventh volume of covers and classics from their famous Live Lounge. Containing 37 tracks over two CDs, the compilation features some of the biggest and best artists of the moment. With performances from powerhouses like Jessie J, Emilie Sande, and Rita Ora, the album highlights the best of British vocals mixed with a twist of American flavour. Florence Welch’s take on Drake’s album track, ‘Take Care’, is a masterpiece, and Carly-Rae Jepson’s teen-pop track, ‘Call Me Maybe’ is given a smooth acoustic facelift by Ben Howard. Highlights come from surprising fusions, such as soul sensation Usher, with his lively delivery of Foster The People’s classic hit, ‘Pumped Up Kicks;’ and the Arctic Monkeys with their witty take on Katy B’s dubstep track, ‘On A Mission’. Hip-Hop kings, Kanye and Jay-Z are taken on by unlikely Brit trio, Ed Sheeran, Devlin and Labyrinth with their London tinged interpretation on ‘No Church in the Wild’. This year’s assortment of the finest moments from the Maida Vale studios are captured throughout the album, characterised by stripped back tracks, bare vocals and live instrumentals, giving you a real taste of the electric atmosphere in the Live Lounge throughout 2012.

SHEFFIELD ALL STARS A SEASON OF SECRETS

BEATS

Here at The Student Magazine, we love a good Sheffield band. This month, we caught up with the Steel City’s own, A Season of Secrets – Brett, Sam, Adam, Matt, Chris and Dayle.

Describe your style of music. As we’re finding our sound as a band, I’d say it’s becoming more and more melodic as well as punky. We all listen to stuff like Landscapes, Heights, Defeater etc. and take a heavy influence from them as individuals. Tell us something exciting about the band. Nothing exciting really happens in our band! Nah, recently we got signed up to a management label in Australia which is incredible for a band like us. It’s probably the greatest achievement for us all and the most exciting prospect also! Where is your dream location to play? I know it sounds silly but if you would have asked us this before the whole Australian deal we would have probably said Aus. We’ve heard it’s such a beautiful place and that the kids there really dig UK bands coming over and touring, so we’re stoked for that. Where is your next gig going to be held? We have a big gig with some of Sheffield’s best unsigned bands bang at the start of next year. That’s all we can say for the time being! Describe A Season Of Secrets in three words. Energetic live performance. What are your plans for next year as a band? We’re planning to release a mini album sometime within the first six months of next year (ideally before we go on tour in Australia) and try to do as many UK shows as possible to keep getting our name out there, and hopefully progress in the direction we want to go towards.

We’re all connected in today’s digital era. Smartphones, tablets and social media lead the way, but the smart guys at Samsung have stepped it up a notch and come up with the Samsung GALAXY Camera, the connected device that fuses Wi-Fi and 3G connections so you can share photos instantly. With a whole array of multimedia features, you’ll be shooting your Christmas holiday pics like a pro.

Some might say it looks like Samsung have just sandwiched a smartphone and camera together, but the camera on this multimedia device really does deliver. The Wide 21x lens is perfect for different environmental conditions and on-camera settings include several filters and editing features to bring each picture up to your desired standards. Just like Instagram can make that picture of your late night beans on toast look artistic, the Samsung GALAXY Camera’s professional shooting modes will do that and much more. One of the main features of the camera is, of course, the wireless instant sharing. Powered by the latest android operating system Jelly Bean, you won’t need a computer to upload pictures anymore. If family or friends have compatible Wi-Fi devices, you can share images using the Share Shot features that connect up to eight devices at once. This doesn’t only mean that you can share photos instantly, but it also makes them accessible to a wider range of people. Most grandparents have just figured out how to use email, let alone create Facebook accounts and upload their own photos. Samsung’s newest gadget will make sharing pictures easier and more straight-forward for everyone.

....................................................................

Calvin Harris 18 Months

NEYO R.E.D

BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge 2012

和 來自倫敦的Rapper Tinie Tempah合作 的“Drinking from the Bottle”節奏詼 諧流暢,絕對值得一聽。

在這張收錄了十九首歌曲的專輯 裏,“Let Me Love You”,“Shut Me Down”,“Forever Now”都帶有 強烈的嬉皮色彩。 有和說唱界新星Wiz Khalifa合作的嘻哈單曲“Don’t Make Em Like You”,也有和國寶級的Tim McGraw合作的吉他雙人合唱“She is”。

亮點往往來自於讓人驚訝的組合,比 如頗具靈魂氣質的Usher生動地詮釋 Foster The People的經典“Pumped Up Kicks”,又比如Arctic Monkeys 把他們的詼諧氣質帶進Katy B的“On A Mission”。而嘻哈天王Kanye和Jay-Z 的“No Church in the Wild”這次也被 Ed Sheeran, Devlin 和Labyrinth 這聽 上去不可思議的全英三重唱添上了濃重 的倫敦色彩。

(Aubergines stuffed with Prawns and Black Bean Sauce) (£8.00)和琵琶豆腐(Pei Pa Bean Curd)(£7.50)。

The Harley

The Harley 334 Glossop Road, Sheffield, S10 2HW www.theharley.co.uk

............................................................................

SARAH TAYLOR

............................................................................................................................... Butterz 、Bok Bok 、D Double E强势来袭 By Laura Keen Published December 2012

簡單直接地來說,我 認為Wiggo(Bradley的外號)就是所謂的終極運動員。 Sports Personality of the Year,這也是關於“personality” (個性)的評選。

Sheffield

Editor Kate Hobson
