Piccolo’s 3 Convent Walk, Sheffield, S3 7RX 0114 249 5040 www.piccolositalian.co.uk Picture it. The mandolin music is trilling through the air, the wax is dripping down the candlestick and the scent of freshly baked dough is carrying through the room. Doesn’t it sound heavenly? The beginning of a perfect night, one where you can sit back, relax and enjoy some of the finest Italian cuisine in Sheffield. That’s the sort of night you’ll have at Piccolos. Located in the heart of Sheffield’s student district at Convent Walk, just a stone’s throw away from West Street, Piccolos is very much the traditional Italian eatery. Established way back in the distant mists of 1998, it has since gone on to become a stalwart of the Steel City, basing its success on the passion its expertly trained staff has for the
art of Italian cookery. A two floor establishment, Piccolos is classically Italian in décor, bringing to mind the classic back alley bistros that sit along the canals of Venice. Whether it’s pizza, spaghetti, ravioli or lasagne you like best, Piccolos use the freshest ingredients and the finest recipes to bring you heaven on a plate. We recently had the chance to check out the cuisine at Piccolos for ourselves, and we have to say we were extremely impressed. Once we were seated we started with a glass of delectable champagne, quickly followed up with homemade garlic bread. We have to say, the dough was delicious, and there was the perfect mix of ingredients and flavours, which acted together, rather than overpowering each other. It was quite honestly, the best we’ve ever had! This was accompanied by Buffalo Mozzarella Sticks on a bed of Spinach Leaves and Seasoned Tomatoes, which set off the rest
of the starter fantastically. This was followed up by an exciting main - Fillet Steak, cooked medium rare in a red win jus, accompanied with potatoes and vegetables. It was hearty and delicious, perfect for a main course. However it was the dessert that truly took our breath away – getting our mouths watering, Sambuca Pancakes. Wrapped around a scrumptious ice cream centre and doused in flaming Sambuca, it was magnificent, a true sight to behold. It actually took our breath away and was reason enough alone to make Piccolos a regular on our menu! So with that let’s wrap up. If you want a restaurant dripping with atmosphere and ram packed with delicious Italian treats, then Piccolos is an absolute must. The service is perfect, the food is heavenly and the prices are a steal. What more could you possibly want?

There’s no need to stray away from University this Month - with so much going on you’d be a fool to leave the comfort of the union...
HALLAM UNIVERSITY Varsity 2013 With a win at the Winter Varsity, Sheffield Hallam are in good stead for a victory in the whole of this year’s competition which really kicks off in March, finishing on the 13th. A win last year for Hallam means that the stakes are high, and competitors will want to impress this year. You can show your support for your University by downloading the Facebook banner for your timeline and also by buying an official Varsity 2013 t-shirt from The Hubs. The battle for support is already happening with a Twitter mentions competition, with the University of Sheffield slightly ahead at the moment, but that can all change!
Juice Made in Hallam An exciting take on ITV’s Celebrity Juice will take place on March 3rd, in the form of a themed night hosted at Walkabout exclusively for Hallam students and to raise money for Cancer Research UK. There will be two panels and one host, and all students are welcome to come along and be the audience. With tickets priced at £3.50 and a variety of drinks deals on offer, it is bound to be a fun packed evening. The event starts at 7.30pm and is a refreshing change from the standard night out. Sheffield’s very own Sour Cherry will be in attendance too!
SHU Fest 2013 This year’s SHU Fest will be taking place between March 4th – 10th and is a unique showcase of the best diversity and talent that Hallam students have to offer. The week-long festival will feature all sorts of events, from dance to cookery and poetry to comedy. There will also be interactive workshops which will allow students to get involved in various different activities that they may have no prior experience of. The festival is a chance to show off all the creativity present at Hallam University, and help to encourage others to be a part of all the great activities that are going on.
Sheffield Circus Gathering at the Hubs On March 9th at the Hubs, a whole day is going to be dedicated to fun circus antics. Workshops will be taking place throughout the day to teach circus skills, with a cabaret performance in the evening to show off the new skills students have learnt. If getting involved in the actual activity isn’t your thing then there’s the Masquerade Ball after-party, with free cake and plenty of interesting masks and outfits to behold. Tickets are £8 in advance and everyone is welcome; discount is available for society members but you don’t have to be experienced to get involved!

THE WANTED Every month Adam O’Neill brings us all the celeb gossip from 105 Capital FM HQ. He’s on Capital across Yorkshire every afternoon between 4-7pm!
With addictive hits like ‘Glad You Came’ and ‘All Time Low’, forever twinkling out of the radio, boyband The Wanted is becoming big news on the music scene, pumping out chart smashers. Capital FM’s Adam O’Neill grabbed a few minutes with the Nathan, Jay, Siva, Tom and Max from The Wanted for a chat about their new reality TV show and what they’ve got planned for the future.
10.
www.thestudentmag.co.uk
We hear you’ve landed yourself a new show on the E! Network. Can you tell us a bit about it? Jay: Yes we have! It’s one of those reality style ones, not quite the Kardashians, but they’re going to follow us around while we’re doing different stuff in America and other places we’re not allowed to announce yet! We’re all quite excited and nervous! Have you started filming yet? And when will people be able to watch it? Nathan: No, we haven’t started filming just yet. I think we start in June, which means it’ll be on TV in the UK around autumn.
Sounds great! So what will be your next single? Siva: We’re actually going to be releasing All Time Low in the States to go with the start of the show, because that has never been a single there. Do you remember it? Yes of course we do! Tom: We don’t! We watched the video for it last night and we were like, ‘Oh my God! I look about 10’!
So you must’ve been travelling a lot between America and the UK to promote yourselves? Tom: Yes, we have been rushing back and forth between the two. It’s been really busy, Last year we racked up 400,000 air miles! That must be enough to get something good, right?! Yep that could get you a proper good holiday!
Do you think being a pop star has aged you somewhat then? Jay: Yep, I think if you compare us when we first released stuff and now, we have withered a lot. Or we’ve just hit puberty! Maybe we’re just able to grow facial hair now! Max: I think two years ago I just looked 24, now I am 24, what does that mean?! I think the last time we saw you was in Sheffield at the Meadowhall Light Switch On, where you closed the show.
What’s been your most recent highlight? Tom: We’ve really enjoyed writing and recording the new album. We had a really productive time and are looking forward to getting the demos back and tweaking them around. We don’t want to rush the process though!
Have you got any more plans for live appearances in the UK coming up? (All): Yes! Max: Around November we’ll be touring with the new album which conveniently comes out just before, so we’ll be coming up to Sheffield for that!

Fancy a tasty bite to eat or a cheeky tipple or two? A browse around some funky little shops? A quick nip out for some student essentials? Then Ecclesall Road is where you need to be. Situated slap bang in the middle of student haven, the area is flanked by Hallam Uni’s Collegiate campus to the bottom and the University of Sheffield’s Endcliffe Student Village to the top. To celebrate the best of Eccy Beach we’ve put together a pretty amazing guide to Ecclesall Road and associated areas. It’s even got a treasure map, so hop out onto the streets and dig up some buried Ecclesall Treasure.

The History The famous thoroughfare is in
actual fact an integral part of Sheffield’s history, and was originally constructed in the early 19th Century, as a turnpike road by the Sheffield and Chapel en le Frith Trust. It was a classic toll road, with the first toll payable at Hunters Bar. The toll was abolished in 1884, and subsequently, the early 20th Century saw it play host to some of the city’s tramway lines. These closed in March 1954, despite an 11,000 strong petition in protest. Today it is the centre of student culture with many shops, bars and cafes catering to the young, sophisticated crowd.
AEcclesall Student Paradise Road is now a haven
pit, which housed two bears until 1870 when a child was killed after falling into the pit, although which is now home too much less dangerous steel bear sculpture.
Eccy Road Treasure There’s something for every-
one and every need packed into Ecclesall Road. Whether you fancy sampling a bit of traditional Asian cooking at Kashmiri Kitchen, or ordering a cheese-oozing pizza from Hungry Hound; dabbling in literature at Porter Bookshop or immersing yourself in Moroccan culture at Otto’s, it’s all here. Take a peek at our treasure map to hunt out all our favourite places – as you know, X marks the spot so you might just find the gold!
of student culture, and this is largely due to the presence of the Collegiate College campus, a part of Sheffield Hallam University. The campus means that the road is at the heart of student life, revitalising the road and leading to an influx of student orientated business. The houses surrounding the road are mostly student properties – fancy a house party, anyone?
Botanical Gardens With an entrance near Tesco’s,
the Botanical Gardens are a Sheffield oasis, just a stone’s throw away from the heady commercialism of Ecclesall Road. It’s a paradise of exotic plants and elegant floral arrangements that are the perfect balm after a day’s shopping. There’s even a bear

Situated at 227 Sharrowvale Road, The Porter Bookshop is known for its fantastically diverse range of academic text books. Their range includes humanity, art, poetry, philosophy, film studies, history, literature, business management, foreign languages and science
textbooks, amongst many more. Owner and Philosophy graduate, Brian Tee, has turned the shop into a vibrant student oasis over a seven year period. Inspired by the first book he ever read, HG Wells’ War of the Worlds’, he went on to be enamoured by the world of Philosophy when he read ‘Meditations on First Philosophy’ by renowned thinker Rene Descartes, returning to this book to see how sexy and seductive ideas can be… Both led him not only to open his own shop, but start a summer Philosophy reading group. Living so far away from the coast, we don’t often get to taste the delicious sea food dishes that are unique in their taste and texture. Unless we want to fly abroad that is, and we usually don’t have the cash for that. The one exception to this has always been The Mediterranean Restaurant.
lands, it has an elegance and class that makes it the perfect place to relax after a hard day of lectures. A particular highlight is the selection of tapas, and when we had the chance to sample these delicacies, we jumped at the chance! We tried such tapas dishes as grilled salmon, salmon fish cakes, king prawns, Spanish rice, potatoes, Spanish fish stew, squid and monk fish. The salmon was grilled to perfection, and something stunning which
everyone should try is the delicious crab salad and unique crab ice cream. To finish, we savoured a British classic of strawberries and cream, and tasted their amazing beetroot ice cream! The food was spectacular, with generous portion sizes and all tasting absolutely delicious. To top it all off, the service was first class. We also really enjoyed their signature dish, the Spanish soup, filled with prawns, fish and clams. It was the perfect sea food dish, light and tongue tingling.
This culinary gem is tucked away on Sharrowvale Road, having been in business since 1984. It was the first establishment of its kind to bring tapas and sea food to Sheffield. Focusing on classic sea food and fish dishes from the hottest of the Mediterranean

7-9 Hickmott Road, Sheffield, S11 8QF 0114 327 2321 There’s much more to the Italian cuisine than a limp piece of pasta or tasteless slice of pizza. Sheffield needed something unique, and its prayers were answered with the arrival of Nonnas. It’s a little known fact among us Brits that ‘Nonna’ is the Italian term for ‘grandma’, and the warm, reassuring presence of a grandmamma is what Nonnas is all about, passionate about its heritage and a firm fixture on the Ecclesall Road boulevard. The restaurant is a rustica haven of scrumptious cuisine, but it’s the new Nonna’s Pizza that’s caught our eye, situated
literally round the corner of Nonna’s restaurant, next door on Hickmott Road. A taste of Italia packed with authentic flavours and traditional skills, the highlight has to be the Pizza Al Taglio (pizza by the slice), which allows you to sample many different tastes and textures for prices that won’t leave you sobbing into your Margarita. Even better? If you go on Wednesday, pizza is half price! Other irresistible takeaway treats offered include mouth-watering lasagne and ooey, gooey,
delicious dolcini desserts. After your nibbles you can migrate into their special Drinks Den to sup upon Italian crate beers trust us, it’s the perfect thing to quench that after dinner thirst. A visit to Nonnas also gives you the chance to view the photos and browse the merchandise of Nonnas’ own La Squadra. Curious? It’s the 100 strong cycling club sponsored by the restaurant, who get to go to the most historic, most fabulous parts of the Italian peninsula and participate in national races. The photos they bring back alone are well worth a look if you want a glimpse of the real Italy, behind all the stereotypes. To find out more visit http://www.nonnas.co.uk/pizza

Traditional Moroccan tunes trickle through the speakers to give you a little something extra whilst you enjoy your meal. We sampled a taste of northern Africa with a dabble in their menu, trying the Chicken Cous Cous, plentiful and hearty. The dish is full of sauce and delicious with a variety of different tastes. Laden with vegetables, chick peas and a whole load of chicken, it hits the spot; the sauce is cooked with the chicken, giving the whole dish an extra burst of flavour. We felt bad leaving some but as always, our eyes were bigger than our stomach! Food can be made spicy to taste, but generally the dishes are mild with a hint of mystically Moroccan spice. The delicious desserts are homemade and a perfect end to a fabulous meal. The restaurant has some fantastic offers and special events always available, and as all the food is
made on the premises, the chefs can provide plenty of choices for all dietary requirements, including gluten free, Halal, dairy free, vegetarian, vegan and nut free. For a true taste of the exotic, Otto’s is the place for you. Immerse yourself in tradition Moroccan cuisine and atmosphere and take a step away from Yorkshire into magical northern Africa.
The Grapes 80 Trippet Lane, Sheffield, S1 4EL 0114 249 0909 Over the last few years, Sheffield has become a hub of culture, where stars are born and music trends are set. Our pubs and bars are at the heart of this phenomenon, centres of modern culture. That’s what makes The Grapes such a fascinating place to visit. The Grapes is a classic style British pub on Trippet Lane, in the heart of our famous student district. It’s particularly well known as the place where indie legends, The Arctic

Monkeys, got their start. This innocent looking pub was the cradle of the Sheffield indie scene, and it’s continued to be as The Killers, one of the biggest indie bands in the world, chose the pub as the setting of a photo shoot. So what is it that makes this pub so appealing to creative types? It’s one of those classic pubs which brings back the drinking traditions of yesteryear. It has a fantastic selection of top beers and lagers, and is the perfect place to while away the hours, soaking in the atmosphere and culture that Sheffield has to offer. That’s why it’s a must on your next bar crawl. It’s the place with music and culture
in its very blood, and as such is a unique experience. It helps that the prices won’t break the student budget and the atmosphere is conductive to drinking way into the early hours. The Grapes is a pub that cannot be missed!
LOV E A BL E R OGUES INTERVIEW Eddie Brett, Sonny Jay and Té Eugene Qhairo – the three cheeky chappies that form Loveable Rogues. Having risen to fame through appearing in the last series of ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent, the boys have been busy, recording their first single and album and supporting Olly Murs on tour. We grabbed a few moments with Eddie, the morning after their first tour show, for all the gossip from the show, how the band have got to where they are now and what they’ve got planned for the future. Loveable Rogues are set to be big – remember you heard it here first!

Hi, how are you? I’m alright, I’m a little bit, I don’t know. I wouldn’t say I’m drunk, but you know when you’re a little bit, like, you’re still feeling the night before a little bit? Did you go out last night? It’s the first night of tour, so it was all high spirited and my family were there, so thought I’d have a couple of drinks in the bar, but what turned into a couple of drinks soon turned into a whole night and I had to be up so early today! Yeah it’s all cool, it’s just life on the road… How many tour dates have you got lined up? It’s 28 dates! You shot to fame on Britain’s Got Talent – how long had you been together before the show and why did you enter? We’d known each other for about four years and then we kind of started the band after like a year of knowing each other, so about three years ago. Yeah, we just started playing around with some songs and it kind of just clicked and it felt good, so we kept doing it. What made you choose Britain’s Got Talent over other, more music focused shows, like X Factor? It was the management to be honest, we didn’t really think of doing any kind of show, we didn’t really think it would be our kind of thing or it would be for us. But then management kind of said it would be a good ‘in’, kind of thing, and sometimes you just have to listen to people’s opinions and thoughts on certain things, and we all knew what we wanted from our careers and stuff, and whatever’s going to help you get there you’ve got to kind of listen to, and then we decided after much deliberation that it would be right for us. You came fourth in the show –
were you disappointed not to win? No; do you know like, if it was something else, like I’m quite a competitive person and I probably would be a bit pissed off if I didn’t win, but because the other acts were like, not novelty acts, but they were – yeah I’m going to say they were novelty acts – you don’t really take it personally, you just know that you weren’t flavour of the week that week. It’s not like if you were in a football match that they’re a better team than you, it’s not like that, it’s just they’re just different to you so it’s really cool, and I think that’s one of the positive things about on that show specifically. What happened after the show, you’ve been signed by Simon Cowell’s label? We got signed, we’d like done loads of gigs in the summer to get a bit of cash together, and then we’ve been working in the studio writing an album, then Mr Ollie Murs gave us the call and was like, ‘Would you like to come and tour with us?’. We thought about it and were like, yeah whatever, and then just like, definitely. And now the single’s coming out and we’ve done all the music videos for it and everything - happy days at the moment! So was it the first date of the tour last night? Yeah it was indeed, it was in Newcastle at the Metro Arena. Did it go well? It went really well, yeah, we’ve got ‘innies’ now which are like little headphone things that are moulded to your ears, but it’s like we’re properly artists now! Is it scary to go on a stage like that? It’s actually nicer to go on bigger stages than smaller ones, like we’ve only ever known gigs in shit places, like clubs and pubs and anything we can get on, and
you can see everyone’s faces, you can see that there’s no one there and stuff like that but when you’re in an Olly Murs arena gig, everyone’s there to have a great time, the seats are filled up, the sound’s fantastic and you don’t have to worry about anything, so it’s not scary at all, it’s the best feeling, it’s just like pure buzz, what a buzz! So your first single, ‘What A Night’, is out on April 21st – what can we expect from this? What sort of sound have you gone for? We all come from different backgrounds and stuff so we all like different sounds of music and we’ve kind of found a middle ground, in our sound at the moment, which works really cool for us. Are you putting together your album now? When is it due for release? Yeah, yeah, like, I think we might be there, you know? We’ve kind of, we’ve spoken to our A&R guy and just said when we’ve finished the tour, we’ll go and have a serious chat about what we want like, to work on more, what we need changing, things like that, but the main bulk and body of it, it’s all there. What have you got planned for the future? Well, you’ve put me on the spot now, there’s loads of stuff cracking on in the background! I might take up knitting or something, learn how to do a few hats, might go to a cinema, erm… but no, the future’s looking good, the future’s orange!

STUDENTSTROLOGY
You are a person suited to modern conveniences, Aquarius, and you’re the type who’s literally glued to your smartphone. A little heads up - it might cause you a few problems this month but never fear, you’ll get to relearn that most old fashioned of social institutions: talking face to face!
If you’re a third year, Pisces, then March is going to prove stressful; not only you, but your mates have dissertation deadlines looming and all the stress may cause fights to break out. Don’t let your natural desire to please get in the way; stand up for yourself.
With the routine of second term work setting in, your concentration and dedication may begin to flag this March. Don’t let it; fire up your natural enthusiasm, Aries, and take the metaphorical bull by the horns. You’ll be pleased you do when you get your next essay marks back!
This month, the achievements of others may just outstrip your own, Taurus, and your natural tendency towards jealousy and resentment may become an issue. Don’t let it, everyone has ups and downs in their work and your time to shine will come.
This March, Gemini, your itch to travel might just flare up. Why don’t you indulge it for once? Take a small day trip and see where it takes you. We’re not saying plan an around the world trip, but trying something different could lead to something you’d never expect.
You’re normally the care taker, Cancer, you’re usually the parental figure in the flat, making sure everyone’s ok. Unfortunately, this month you might need a little TLC yourself. Let people take care of you for once, you can’t be care taker all the time.
Lambs skipping, daffoldils blooming, chocolate eggs cracking... and the Stars are a-whispering. As always, our resident Studentrologist casts a little bit of doom and promise over the student world this month, bringing you his March predictions. Beware, innocent students, the universe works in strange ways and you’d be foolish not to take heed of his warnings...
Be careful this month Leo, we know you tend towards the extravagant and in some cases that’s ok; in others it isn’t. You need to watch your finances and make sure you don’t go over your overdraft limit – the banks charge through the nose for that!
A group project might just prove to be a metaphorical minefield for you this month, Virgo. You’re a natural perfectionist and group projects mean you can’t be. Make an effort, but loosen the reigns a little - other people’s contributions matter too!
You’re naturally attractive, Libra, everyone recognises this and it’s always nice to know people appreciate you. Don’t let it get to your head this month; beauty is only skin deep and it’s not worth tearing out your beautifully coiffed hair over.
Things in your life may be going a little faster than you’d like, Scorpio. You’re naturally resistant to change and with the end of the year looming ever closer, it might start getting to you. Don’t let it – uni is all about having fun while you can!
You are a sociable person, Sagittarius, there’s no doubt about it, and you’re the life and soul of any party. However, with your bank balance this month, you can’t afford it. How about staying in? It is possible to socialise without booze, you know!
We know your reputation is important to you Capricorn; however we feel we need to warn you that it might take a knock this month. Lighten up, don’t let people get to you and in the words of Miss Gaga, “learn to love yourself ”!

Climax at the Hubs By Joe Davis PublishedMarch 2013
Being the staunch, slightly alcoholic, traditionalist that I am, when news first reached my ears that The Sheffield University Union’s Foundry and Fusion was closed for repairs, and that, as a consequence, Climax, the most (and only) epic LGBT student night in Sheffield was moving to the Sheffield Hallam Hubs, I was less than impressed. So disappointed was I at this change that I avoided Climax for months; I know it’s a little sad, but nevertheless it’s the truth. I finally took the plunge last month and went to check out the new Climax. The night started with a healthy dose of vodka to shore up our flagging spirits, as me and my mate Nadia made ready to embrace the change. The weird thing? It turned out to be the best Climax we’ve ever been to. It was a traffic light party, which meant that right from the get go, we were assaulted with vibrant colours and wicked stickers. The atmosphere was off the scale, as the bar was well stocked with cheap booze, the floor was packed with drunken students and the vibe was buzzing! It was so good that once it finished we ended up paying a visit to Dempsey’s, which we’d both formerly promised not to go to, as we were both skint. Admittedly, it put a rather large dent in our bank balances, but the shots were flowing all night and the party didn’t stop ‘til the break of dawn, literally. I didn’t get home before 7am. If that isn’t the sign of a good night, I don’t know what is. It just goes to show - you should embrace change, it leads to new adventures!

Ohm Sweet Ohm with Joris Voorn By Laura Keen Published March 2013
Two months into the second semester and I can now confidently say that third year will be the death of me. I don’t know what is more depressing - the sheer mountain of work or the fact that I don’t actually know what I want to do with my life. Probably the latter, so right now the solution is to ‘live for the moment’, or in other words, drink copious amounts of alcohol at every given opportunity. So Plug have started an ingenious night called Ohm Sweet Ohm, an amalgamation of top House DJs and fresh talent from in and around Sheffield. What better excuse for getting wasted and numbing the torment of third year? We started the night with a tame pre-drink, taking time to pity the moron in gold hot pants on Take Me Out, and then headed down to the Forum for some cocktails. With the Amaretto Sours ordered in we headed straight to the dance floor to warm up to some classic nineties dance tunes. For a Saturday night, the atmosphere was pleasantly tame and several Sourz later, we ventured down to Plug. Ohm Sweet Ohm is unlike anything Plug has ever done before, and with its Tokyo style visuals and chilled vibe, they had finally done it right. With people literally crawling up the walls around the edge of the dance floor, Joris Voorn was ushered through via a human wall of bouncers. He took to the decks and took the roof off; his Techno approach to House had everybody bouncing. He played an extended set which was well received by all, and by the time 4am came about we were all danced out. We peeled the fellow ravers off the speakers and quickly dispersed to the taxi rank. Another brilliant night at Ohm Sweet Ohm.

Brutally Unfunny? By Yasmine Gleghorn Published March 2013
We were barely 20 minutes into the film before my friend Anna turned her laptop off. That evening back in 2007, someone had suggested watching White Chicks. When she did go to turn it off, no one stopped her. No one complained. We were all glad it was gone. It was the start of a long string of disappointing comedy films we couldn’t bring ourselves to finish. Norbit, Boat Trip, The Mask 2, Epic Movie, Borat, EuroTrip, 18 Year Old Virgin… the list can only get longer. Adam Sandler’s Jack and Jill was the last straw. Dressing up like a woman won’t save anyone’s career. And honestly, since Dustin Hoffman’s Tootsie and Robin Williams’ Mrs Doubtfire, no one has done it properly. Comedy’s old superstars are running dry. Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller are better off voice acting than standing in front of a camera. Will Ferrell will probably live off Anchorman sequels. And Adam Sandler - well, he was never that good anyway. The question is, how comedians will try to step it up in 2013. Steve Carell is betting on The Incredible Burt Wonderstone to redeem old comedians and save us from the eyesore that was Movie 43. Carell plays superstar magician Burt Wonderstone, who alongside his partner Anton Marvelton, has ruled the Las Vegas strip for years, raking in millions with illusions as big as Burt’s growing ego. But lately, the duo’s greatest deception is their public friendship, while secretly they’ve grown to loathe each other. Facing cutthroat competition from guerilla street magician Steve Gray, whose cult following surges with each outrageous stunt, even their show looks stale. Also starring Jim Carrey, Olivia Wilde and Steve Buscemi, the poster seems like a good enough reason to go. Carell’s and Carrey’s blond locks, sparkly outfits and overly airbrushed faces could either make it or break it. However, Carell’s track record (40 Year Old Virgin, Crazy Stupid Love and The Office) is good enough to give this one a chance.
A Leauge of Champions By Tom Hardy Published March 2013
Ask anyone about their favourite sporting event and they’ll probably say something along the lines of the Olympics, World Cup or even Wimbledon. For me though, the Champions League has certainly got to be right up there. Not only does the theme song make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, but the football ain’t too bad either. At the time of writing, there are still three sides left flying the flag for Britain. The harsh reality is that it could quite easily become zero come the beginning of March. What’s happened to the major driving force that is English football? Scottish champions, Celtic, have already gone one better than holders Chelsea and Premier League winners Man City, who were dumped out at the group stages. Man United will feel the most confident of progressing to the quarter-finals after heavy defeats at home for Arsenal and Celtic. An extremely professional 1-1 draw at Real Madrid proved a lot of people wrong, and the away goal from Danny Welbeck (yes, I couldn’t believe it either!) could prove vital if their defence can keep Ronaldo and Co. quiet. Whatever unfolds with the domestic clubs, some things are absolutely guaranteed when you watch Europe’s number one competition. Contending with Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend is one. Another is sitting through a hell of a lot of adverts. But the quality of players and football on show makes all of that worthwhile.

The newest innovative salon to leap onto Sheffield’s hair scene is Volt – a vision of black, grey and pink hidden away down a cobbled street by the cathedral. Having opened in December 2012, directors Helen Porter and Jennie Copley launched Volt after reaching a stage in their career when they could realise their dream of creating a salon space of their own. An established team of stylists with 20 years of experience, the team have worked in various Sheffield salons as well as a large London salon chain, plus are Wella Trend Vision finalists. The salon lies in an amazing space, a former cathedral bookshop on East Parade in the beating heart of the city, right next to the Cathedral tram stop. Having been empty for many years, the space was begging to be transformed and Helen
and Jennie collaborated with Anwar Studio to create an individual identity. Throughout the salon is featured stunning design, including a bespoke reception desk, mirrors, signage and branding. Their unique, modern design merges perfectly with the old, listed building features, with the team designing plans to exact specifications. Having given themselves a six week period in which to complete the project, the Volt team created the space with their own bare hands, working tirelessly to get it finished. Volt is somewhere a little different to your usual salon space – think shocking pink lights meet exposed brick, stainless steel fittings braving it under dominating wall arches. Specialising in all aspects of hairdressing, the team are pros when it comes to wedding hair, hair extensions, perming, fashion colouring, technical cutting and colour corrections, plus they offer a wide range of services from a simple cut and finish to a full head of highlights, for both ladies and gents.
friendly, relaxing atmosphere for clients, clients are treated to a full service from the moment they book an appointment. Treat yourself to a full menu of tipples, including the unmissable Bailey’s coffees, or beer, wine and teas and coffees. Playstation 4 Release date and price to be deter....................................................................
It’s official - the PlayStation 4 has been announced! It’s still a little bit of a mystery right now, but that’s the best bit. We have so much to look forward to, we’ve got the funny feeling it’s going to be a gamer’s dream. With all the progress the PlayStation brand makes each time they release something new, the release of a new console is like a public holiday for the gamers amongst us. So what do we currently know about the upcoming PlayStation 4? Admittedly, at this moment in time, information is a little thin on the ground; however we’ve not been left totally in the dark. The console was first announced by Sony Computer Entertainment President and Group CEO, Andrew House, who commandeered the Hammerstein Ballroom, one of New York’s most prestigious venues for the announcement. So what was in the announcement? The one phrase that caught the attention of the world’s press is that it will be the world’s “most powerful platform ever”. Strong words, but immediately backed up by the fact it’ll allow “worlds to come alive with greater fidelity and intensity than ever before”. With plans for a new Dualshock controller and cloud gaming also revealed, it looks like it’ll be a smash hit with gamers everywhere. Going into specifics, the exec boasted of the device’s 8GB of unified memory system, saying
58.
www.thestudentmag.co.uk
that it has “highly enhanced” PC GPU, containing “a unified array of 18 compute units, which collectively generate 1.84 Teraflops of processing power that can freely be applied to graphics, simulation tasks, or some mixture of the two”. We think that means it’s going to be good. With a rough release date of the 2013 holiday season scheduled, it looks like this super gaming device will be ready and waiting for you under the Christmas tree. Let the countdown begin!

............................................................................
Those pesky hairs down below demand constant attention; you create a shaven haven with your razor yet they insist on growing back at speed. The solution? Waxing. A word which fills the entire female population with dread. Nuba offered to ease us into the world of wax, however, with our first intimate wax. Taken care of by therapist Natalie, her calming and friendly tone helped to quell our fears, discussing girly topics to make the pain (even a superhero couldn’t make whipping off strips of hot wax completely painless) bearable and the awkwardness evaporate, making having your lady garden trimmed feel like a walk in the park! Waxing lasts up to four weeks, usually costing £28 but Nuba are offering the treatment to students for just £20. Offering a full range of hair and beauty treatments, the salon also offers 10% student discount on Mondays and Tuesdays and 15% on Wednesdays (not in conjunction with any other offer).

Hu Wei

............................................................................
It was a mostly typical Monday; back-to-back classes, eyes heavy with tiredness and a law test to round off the afternoon. Though for one friend, a birthday surprise beckoned. For a celebratory meal we went to Hu Wei, one of the UK’s top 10 Chinese restaurants, based in West Street. The décor is modern but minimalist; a mix of deep purple, metallic grey and classic black. The menu is just as simple, with the main courses broken down in to meat, seafood, speciality veg, Szechuan and traditional cuisine. I went for the Tiger Chilli Peppers with a side of Steamed Rice; the whole green chillies lay in a bed of sweet, tangy sauce, which I deftly bunged a heap of steamed rice on to. Surprisingly, it was the richness of the sauce that I found a bit overpowering rather than the spice of the chilli peppers. On the whole, the meal was great, partly because it indulged my unbridled culinary abandon when it comes to spicy food. My flatmate had stir-fried vegetable noodles; a medley of pepper, mushroom and beansprouts drizzled with spicy curry sauce. The portion size was pretty generous, too. For the sweet-toothed among us, a treat was still to come. The staff served up a pre-bought chocolate cake with a smile and a lively round of ‘happy birthday’, along with a heap of small plates. Considering that it was a busy period, the service was generally good. They catered for all of us, even though the party was bigger than originally booked (anyone who has ever used Facebook events can attest to this)! The only setback was that the first main meal arrived quite some time before the last ones did, with a gap of about 20 minutes in between. Cash-wise, it was very reasonable. My meal came to £9.90, plus drinks. And that was before the 10% student discount was deducted: bonus!

Walkabout
Carver Street, Sheffield, S1 4FS www.walkabout.eu.com 0114 241 3400 ............................................................................ What do you do on a Friday night when you’ve had pre-drinks but you’re not quite ready to hit a club? You need to hit a bar, have a little bit of a dance, get a few cheap drinks and hype yourself up for the main event. It’s like a starter bar. That’s why this month, we at The Student Magazine presents to you Walkabout on Carver Street, just off main student thoroughfare West Street, in the heart of the Steel City.
BOOZE
Famous as part of one of the biggest chain of bars throughout the UK, Walkabout is an Australian themed bar which brings some of that frontier down under charm to the Sheffield bar scene. Walking in, the bar’s central theme immediately hits with bright painted walls contrasting sharply with Australian themed decorations, wall hangings and objects littered throughout. Noted especially for its showing of sports matches, Walkabout boasts Sheffield’s biggest HD screen along with two 3D flat screens, all with a constant flow of premier sports matches from around the globe. Perfect to sit down, chill out and support your favourite team as they battle for sports supremacy!
The bar also hosts a fantastic drinks menu with a wide selection of beers, wines, spirits and cocktails. Amongst these is classic Australian lager, Fosters, as well as Australian white, rosé and red wines and delicious, alcohol laced cocktails such as Sex on the Beach, Daiquiri and Woo Woo. Walkabout is always looking to save you money; they know that sometimes you need to save a little even if you want to have a good time, and they regularly put on special offers exclusive to Walkabout. At the moment, Walkabout is offering a delicious, heart warming burger and a pint for £4.95. Yes - Walkabout also does food; classic Australian and English fare including a variety of barbie dishes and even kangaroo burgers. Walkabout may be a chain establishment but it’s a place with party and atmosphere – perfect as that place you need to hit to begin dancing the night away, with a little bit of shameless Aussie charm squeezed in.

A Good Day to Die Hard (2013) 12A, Action Director: John Moore
RECOMMENDS
....................................................................
The latest instalment in the Die Hard series takes place mostly in Russia, where John McClane finds his son Jack. They are both thrown into protecting a Russian scientist (Komarov) from a corrupt political figure (Chagarin) who plans to have him killed before the former can release incriminating evidence that directly involves the latter. Throw in an odd plot twist, a few nuggets of Bruce Willis’ classic wisdom, a whole bunch of explosions and you’ve pretty much got the gist of this film.
If you’re a fan of the Die Hard series, you’re going to love this for the action alone. As with most of the series though, the plot can be a bit choppy. When Komarov enters his vault and finds a huge amount of uranium in place of vital evidence against Chagarin, a spectacular twist occurs, revealing that he, in fact, planned to get to his vault for his own gains. While this plot twist has great potential, it comes far
66.

too late, leaving nothing for Komarov to do but essentially wait for McClane and his son to arrive and discover his plot. Honestly though, if you’re a fan of Die Hard, you’re probably not a stickler for a story, especially when you throw in the fireworks caused by John McClane’s relationship with his son, Jack, which works to great effect in the action sequences.

Broken City
Rated: 15, Drama Director: Allen Hughes
..................................................................................................................................................................
Broken City is a crime thriller that depicts the story of Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg), a police detective turned private investigator who takes a job in surveillance of the wife of questionable New York mayor Nick Hostetler (Russell Crowe,) as he believes she is having an affair. The truth turns out to be a much larger plot involving Hostetler’s plan for re-election. In the end, Taggart is forced to face his previous sins in the course of doing what is right. While this all sounds amazing and dramatic, the reality is something that doesn’t quite work. Although the story is technically quite good, it is let down by pretty sloppy dialogue, with a few exceptions, such as the back and
forth between Taggart and Hostetler. Elements of the story that become quite important seem to come almost from nowhere, like it is expected that Taggart’s girlfriend would return to Taggart at the end of the film, before he is taken to prison, but her character is not seen again. Instead, Taggart appears to have a quasi-relationship going with his young assistant, which seems forced. As a positive point, Russell Crowe’s performance as Hostetler deserves praise, as Crowe’s experience playing more protagonist characters seemingly helped him to tell the story of this twofaced character, which just about makes up for Wahlberg’s slightly stone-faced performance.

Desolat
Disclosure
Toolroom Records Miami 2013
Underground label Desolat has been bringing the best in club culture to the ears of party kids everywhere since 2007, and with their 5th anniversary having recently passed, the label released a sort of greatest hits collection, with a unique twist, of course. 5 years Desolat Selected and Remixed by Loco Dice is a compilation of Desolat’s top artists best tunes, remixed by label act Loco Dice.
Disclosure have become names celebrated in every club in the nation. With their debut album stated for release this month; we take a look at a few of their previous hits, which will most likely give us an idea of what we can expect from their first full album.
Toolroom Records has once again held its winter music conference and has bounced back with a collection of club remixes that’ll blow your mind once you hit the club.
Loco Dice, one of Desolat’s most diverse acts, are the masters of the remix, and having recently released their own EP Toxic at the end of 2012, are riding high on a wave of electro clash, ready to bring their unique take on other Desolat Label tracks. The result is a dark reimagining of club anthems that refreshes their sound ready for the strobe lights and dirty floors of 2013. One track that proved particularly intriguing was ‘Amorphous Mass’ by Hector, whose Ramstein style deep vocals bring something new to a collection that mostly relies on whirring beats and a hell of a lot of production.
70.
www.thestudentmag.co.uk
We have to begin with ‘Latch’, the hit that proved to be the act’s breakthrough success. They’d be idiots not to feature this one prominently on their first album. The reason? It’s pure genius. Its whirring synths, smooth jazz style vocals and distorted epic electro beats make it the perfect mix of underground thumper and chart smash. No wonder it propelled them into the limelight. Follow up ‘White Noise’, which was never actually meant to be a hit, proved just as popular, and die-hard fans and new fans alike will expect this track to make an appearance on the album. It seems the underground xylophone style synths and lighter than air style vocals (courtesy of Aluna George), really struck a chord with music listeners who needed to cleanse their David Guetta flooded palettes.
The Toolroom Records Miami 2013 Collection is full to the brim with epic remixes and avant garde House genre tunes right from the get go. It’s a massive collection of 53 tracks, so we’re not going to witter on about every single one of them, but instead talk highlights. Album opener, Blacklight (Original Club Mix) by Funkagenda propels us into the stratosphere with strong synths and spacey beats, however second track, ‘Thinking (Mark Knight Remix) by Submotion Orchestra, is a more subdued affair, with retro beats and breathy, ethereal vocals, which act to throw you off your game and open your mind. My favourite track just has to be ‘Justified’ (Original Club Mix) by Filthy Rich and Prok & Fitch, which features stuttered distorted sounds and synths interspersed with elemental raps and smooth R&B vocals, lending it a more urban edge than most of the collection.

SHEFFIELD ALL STARS
S O U R C H E R RY ’ S KOU RT N EY T U R N E R
How did you establish yourself in the music world? Well, I first started doing small venues such as working men’s clubs. We really kept promoting ourselves and we began to get a name for ourselves in Sheffield, and we’re now getting people approaching us with new gigs. Recently we’ve done the 02 Academy, Plug, Soyo, and Leadmill. It’s really good that we’re getting interest from promoters now. We’ve also done a music video that’s on our Youtube page, so that was really fun and that was our first experience with that, and we’re going to be doing another one shortly. Can you tell us what we can expect from a Sour Cherry live set? When we perform live it’s a lot different to what you hear on our tracks. Our music is really poppy, commercial, however when it’s live and you’ve got live musicians, it’s so different. Our bassist loves to bounce around stage and it’s the same with me. We really like to put on a show!
For those of our readers who are unfamiliar with you, can you give us a little run down of your sound? Well we had a review which called us tequila crusted pop, so that’s what we always use. People say we sound like so and so, but you can’t really put a finger on what we sound like. I’d say Lily Allen/Carly Rae Jepsen/Jessie J/ Katy Perry. It’s just really commercial and unapologetic pop. Who are the artists that you look up to and are inspired by? Personally, I’ve been brought up listening to old school. I like Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross and all that. I’ve got a background in singing Michael Jackson. I love the old school stuff. We’ve all got a very eclectic taste. We like to bring it all together and as a band we’ve got a thing that not a lot of other people have. It makes us unique. As a singer- songwriter, can you describe to us your artistic process?
f ‘Sour Cherry’
Basically we do it in many different ways. We can either be in a studio and have the beat and go from there. Listen to it and put down the melody from there, maybe write the lyrics. Sometimes I can come up with some lyrics that I’ve got stuck in my head, maybe not have the melody and go from there. It’s not really a process that has a stage one, stage two etc. Sometimes you’ll get a really strong melody in your head and you really have to write for that. Sometimes it’s just messing about in the studio, everybody has different ideas and we go from there. What does the future hold for you? We’ve got loads of festivals coming up in the summer, loads more gigs. We’ve got another coming up at the O2 Academy. We’re hoping to do tramlines and be on the main stage, if it goes ahead this year. It’s going to be a lot of promotion and another music video. We want to keep people interested in us.

www.thestudentmag.co.uk

www.thestudentmag.co.uk

www.thestudentmag.co.uk

FLICKS Take an insight into the thoughts of the Student Magazine critics as they pick and prod to find out about the latest releases.

Did you know?
The film gives the impression that the Gangster Squad were responsible for Mickey Cohen’s arrest. In reality, Cohen was arrested in 1950 for the more mundane crime of tax evasion. He was also not sent to Alcatraz until 1961, over a decade after the film’s time frame. When the two civilian men are playing Chinese Chess in Chinatown, the pieces clearly do not represent an actual game because some of the pieces are in positions that are not possible in a regular game.

Ecclesall
