The President’s View Looking Back - Remembering - Looking Ahead As we now enter the last final months of 2021, it is timely to take stock and look back at this past year – recall our successes and challenges - learn from them and develop our plans for next year. Last month I discussed “Perseverance” and “Expectations” in recalling their respective definitions as “Perseverance being a continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition”, and “Expectations being what you believe, or hope will happen in the future”. One cannot help but notice that this year we again continued to live in the shadow of COVID – 19 and its offspring Delta. It was beginning to look as if it was going to be a carbon copy of 2020. Fortunately for us, it appears that we have weathered this latest round of the pandemic with a renewed spirit and energy and should be well positioned to face the new challenges which 2022 will send our way. The best part of this year is our community – our residents – our spirit and our energy. The many positive accomplishments of our community and our individual lifestyles will set the tone for next year. Earlier this year we had the good fortune to welcome Maggie Shay to our First Service Residential Staff as our Lifestyle Director and what a difference she has made to our ongoing activities and events. We renewed our First Service Residential Contract. We were able to schedule and vaccinate a significant portion of our Community with the Moderna Vaccine. We have scheduled and provided Flu Vaccinations to our residents – Both thanks to Dr. Zachery Taylor, our Department of Public Health, and our resident Volunteers. Many thanks to our Committees and Clubs for the revived activities and introduction of new ones. We are grateful for our Police, Firefighters, First Responders, and certainly our many resident volunteers. We have moved towards new community and personal normalcy and have again been able to embrace our families, friends, and neighbors. So – What lies ahead? Our dreams – our aspirations – our planned travels - our hobbies - our families. Cresswind has evolved over the years though our courage – tenacity – motivation, and our diversity. We who come from a variety of backgrounds and upbringings, have come together to form our own engaging and supportive community. A constant theme within Cresswind is that we heavily rely upon our residents and resident volunteers to maintain our vision, focus, and spirit. We always need more community involvement and volunteers – please consider how you can contribute to make CWLL the best it can be in 2022. We Cresswinders control our futures in our community – we set the direction, the spirit and vision for our respective futures. Going forward, let us commit to be a bit more caring, sharing, and compassionate and committed to be the best we can be for ourselves, our community, and our neighbors Regards, Dan Gershkowitz Page 6

Architectural Review Committee (ARC) By Louis McClure Did you know that we have combined Landscape & Architectural Changes into one request form? The new form is EIR-1 - External Improvement Request (Landscape & Architectural Changes), available on the Cresswind website under RESOURCES / EFORMS. The resulting External Improvement Request Form provides additional clarity and information regarding the Architectural and/or Landscape application process and its requirements. This additional clarification helps ensure that the initial request is more complete and includes all the required supporting documents and descriptions. The External Improvement Request Form can be used for, Architectural requests, Landscape requests, or “crossover” requests that include aspects of both. All changes to the exterior of a Cresswind residence requires ARC approval in advance of starting the work. We strongly encourage our homeowners to reach out to the ARC when they start planning changes to their homes and yards. The ARC tries to expedite all requests; however, there is a process that must be followed. The mission of the ARC is simply stated: “To preserve and enhance the aesthetic qualities of Cresswind at Lake Lanier for the enjoyment of all current and future homeowners, while protecting and growing the value of our homes.” How this mission is fulfilled is not so simple, and it relies on every Cresswind homeowner having a basic understanding of our Cresswind Rules and Regulations that apply to the ARC. We are looking for four (4) new committee members for 2022 for a term of 3 years. What does the ARC do, you ask?

Step 1

The Homeowner submits the EIR-1 request to the HOA Front Office. In some cases, the Homeowner may request an ARC Member discuss the project with them prior to submitting the EIR-1 form.

Step 2

The HOA Front Office forwards the EIR-1 form to the ARC Chairperson.

Step 3

The ARC Chairperson assigns the request to one of the nine ARC Members.

Page 10

Step 4

Step 5

Step 6

Step 7 Step 8

The ARC Member reviews and evaluates the request in accordance with the Rules & Regulations and the general principles of Cresswind’s aesthetics. The ARC Member may contact the Homeowner to schedule a visit to discuss the request. The ARC Member forwards the requests to the ARC Chairperson with a recommendation for approval or denial. The ARC Chairperson forwards the EIR-1 form and the recommendation to all ARC members for their review and vote. The ARC Chairperson forwards the final approval or denial to the HOA Front Office and the homeowner is notified accordingly.

If the project were to be denied, the Homeowner may choose to modify their project plan or submit an appeal to have the project revisited. The appeal is handled by an independent Appeals Board. Remember to notify the Front Office when your project is complete, so (1) we can meet with you to inspect the improvement for compliance with the project approval notice, and (2) release the security deposit (if applicable).

Step 9

The ARC receives an average of 50 requests per month. It’s been a very busy year, but we’re happy to assist our neighbors with getting approvals for their home improvements. So, are you interested in becoming a member of the ARC Board? We would like to talk with you about our Mission and Committee. Please contact Louis McClure, ARC Chairperson, mcclurelc@charter.net. Let’s be good neighbors and follow the approved Cresswind Rules & Regulations in developing our home projects.

Remember . . . Be Kind, We’re Your Neighbor

Submit an EIR-1 request for ALL exterior changes to your home!  Exterior painting  Fencing  Roof replacement  Stone or paved walkways  Installation of porches/awnings  Deck staining

Budget and Finance Committee

By Sid Jacob

The first assignment of the newly formed Budget and Finance Committee consisting of Gene Evans, Tom Steinmetz, Jay Wolf, and David Shaffer was to review the 2022 Budget prior to submittal and final approval by the Board of Directors. The committee’s review consisted of the following:

● ● ● ● ●

Comparing the 2022 revenue and expenses to prior years Analyzing if the percentage increases/decreases was justified and reasonable Researching existing contracts and ensuring contract pricing was correctly stated Looking at Board assumptions for 2022 and discuss the validity of the budget considerations Looking at not only the 2022 budget numbers, but see if they were integrated with future year’s growth considerations

I can attest to our residents that this committee’s background, experience, and dedication to ensure the optimum results for this community was always at the forefront of the budget discussions. I look forward to future projects that this committee will be called upon to support the Board.

CARE Committee

By Judy Brannan

It is hard to believe that the year 2021 is coming to an end. Even during this year of the COVID pandemic, the CARE Committee has been busy providing meals, offering support and sympathy, and loaning physical resources such as walkers and shower chairs to residents of the Cresswind community. Since there have been quite a few resales in our community, some residents may not be aware of the existence of the CARE Committee. This committee was created nearly four years ago. Our mission is to serve the community by providing assistance as needed or wanted in times of crisis with caring, compassion and empathy, respecting their need for privacy. After nearly four years, it is my pleasure to turn the lead of the committee over into the capable hands of Mary Quisenberry who will serve as chairman for 2022. Postcards have been created for each resident to explain the scope of the committee’s offerings, as well as providing the contact information of the Team Lead for each street. If you have not yet received this postcard, please contact the following representatives:

Phase I - Mary Quisenberry Phase 2A - Maura Williams and Rose Blum Phase 2B - Cathy Bissoondial, Diane Sheppard, and Lynne Tryon Phase 2C - Joanie Taylor and Jean Metzger Phase 3 - Dolores Richardson

AS I leave this position, I would like to give special recognition to Elaine Vetter who has been in charge of the physical resources available to residents. She has maintained a list of resources needed due to surgery or illness and distributes these resources as well as picking them up when people no longer need that help. Thank you, Elaine. Committee Corner Covenants, Rules and Regulations Committee

By Mario Russo

Happy Holidays from the CRRC! Three things for you to peruse as we close out the end of the year.

1. As we draw to the end of 2021, we will have member terms expiring. Please consider joining the CRRC supporting our community. Contact Mario Russo if you are interested or just want to know more about what is involved.

2. Hopefully you are aware the Board passed a handful of resolutions in September and October. These revisions were instituted to align our Rules & Regulations and Committee procedures to correctly follow the Charter. Something that was necessary. Please familiarize yourself with these revisions. They affect how some of the committees will operate going forward. At the time this Waterfall goes to print some additional changes may have been made as well. Either way, it’s imperative you have an awareness of changes applying to our community!

3. In case you missed it in the “Cresswind Daily Update” the Covenants, Rules & Regulations Committee has completed the mid-year revision to Rules & Regulations Manual. It is available via the Cresswind website - “Resources” tab, select “Community Rules & Regulations.” This latest version is dated 09/01/2021. This has been a four-month project, working with seven different committees and clubs along with the HOA. Page #7 in the manual has a recap, highlighting in blue, the specific changes that were made. Thanks to all that contributed! Special thanks to the CRRC team and Maggie Shay. A Huge Shout Out to Linda Potter for her digital publishing and editing skills we used endlessly! As always, you should delete any downloaded version you currently have and save this 09/01/2021 issue. If we can answer any questions, feel free to contact a committee member on the Cresswind website, “Info” tab, then “Committees.”

Education Committee: Alzheimer’s Association Series Rescheduled By Betsy Robertson

Driver safety, Tech Help programs coming this fall The Cresswind Education Committee is teaming up with the Georgia chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association to present a series of programs designed for dementia patients, caregivers, and others interested in mental health and aging. The presentations will provide tips on how to maintain a healthy brain and body; early detection and common warning signs of Alzheimer’s; and treatments for the disease, among other topics. Sessions are tentatively planned for November 2nd, November 16th, and November 30th at the Cresswind clubhouse. Watch for times and other details in the Daily Update. Other upcoming programs include “Lessons from History: COVID-19 and Other Communicable Diseases” by Cresswind resident Dr. Zach Taylor, state public health director for the North Georgia Health District (time/date TBA); a first-responders parade on December 7th: and ongoing clinics designed to teach tech users how to avoid online scams. All programs are free and open to Cresswind residents. Have an idea for a program topic? Contact committee co-chair Betsy Robertson at (334) 740-7926 or email betsyjrobertson@charter.net.

Health and Fitness Committee Moving into the winter months, the Health & Fitness Committee has recom- mended a few changes in the Fitness Center. As of this writing (October 2021) we have acquired a new bench and are considering the purchase of an addi- tional one. We have identified a desig- nated area for stretching located in the back lounge area. The furniture will be moved out. The stretching table will be relocated leaving enough space for individuals to stretch either standing or on the floor without being impeded by trainers and individuals working out. It will be more conducive to safer stretching. Another lane rope will be added to the indoor pool for lap swimmers. We are also looking into purchasing a digital clock for the wall. The proper use of pool equipment is important, and we are setting up a demonstration which will be announced in the Daily Update. On October 13, 2021, Dr. Michael Gottsman who specializes in Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine gave a seminar on Arthritis. We are planning additional seminars in the future and they will be posted in the Daily Update. November/December 2021

By Laurie Solomon

We will be holding our annual Health Fair on January 15, 2022 in the Clubhouse. Further information will be available as the time approaches. Save the date! Now that we have a designated stretch- ing area there will be no excuses not to take the time to stretch. Healthy stretching sends your muscles a wake- up call. Stretching improves flexibility which allows you to do many sports and activities of daily living. If you lead a sedentary lifestyle your muscles and joints have a tendency to atrophy and lose their range of motion. The best medicine is movement to keep the muscles strong and the joints lubricated. The static stretch is the most common and safest form of stretching. It requires that you hold a specific position for a set period of time usually 10 to 30 seconds. You can stretch to the point where you feel tension in the muscle, but not pain. Consistency is the key. For an individualized stretching program it might be wise to consult a fitness professional, physical therapist, or do your own research. According to the Arthritis Foundation most physicians prescribe exercise and stretching to alleviate pain and keep your body flexible. The WATERFALL

Committee Corner Landscape Series: Let’s Talk Grass

By Linda Furgerson

Beginning with this issue of the Waterfall, the Landscape Committee will provide a series of articles on landscape particulars here in North Georgia, specifically here at Cresswind. Many of us come from different areas of the country and are therefore unfamiliar with the peculiarities of growing things in this area. Hopefully this series of articles will help enlighten us all. Since we all have it, and it’s the most prominent feature of our yards, let’s talk about grass. Plain and simple, only two types of sod are allowed in Cresswind at Lake Lanier • Bermuda • Zoysia Both were selected largely because of their durability and ease of maintenance. They are generally more disease tolerant than other grasses, as well as they tend to be more tolerant of temperature extremes and drought/rain conditions. Having consistent types of grass throughout the community allows for standardized treatments that includes: fertilization, weed treatments, spring and fall preparation practices, and mowing frequency and techniques. Which to Choose Both Bermuda and Zoysia are very durable warm-season grasses. While Zoysia prefers sun just like Bermuda, it fares a bit better in shaded areas. Zoysia is also denser than Bermuda which could provide a lusher appearance and feel to the lawn. What to expect with Bermuda or Zoysia While both types of grass provide a good quality lawn, they do come with their “gotchas,” some of which can get pretty aggravating. Thatch-like appearance Especially in the winter and early spring, Bermuda and Zoysia can become thatch-like. This can result in animals or humans tracking in straw-like pieces of grass. You may find yourself having to sweep or vacuum more frequently from January to March. Unfortunately, little can be done to prevent this from occurring as it is part of the normal lifecycle of both grasses. It is not a result of mowing or lack of mowing, it is just how these two grasses react in colder weather. Infiltration of grass into flower beds Both Bermuda and Zoysia spread by underground rhizomes, basically underground runners. In other words, they both like to creep and spread. While Bermuda tends to spread a bit more aggressively than Zoysia, with our temperate climate and moist conditions, both grasses can spread quickly and rampantly. This is especially noticeable in flower beds that do not have some sort of edging. Although installation of edging does help reduce the amount of infiltration of grass into your flower beds, it will not totally prevent it. Please refer to the ARC section in the Rules and Regulations for information on the types of edging allowed. Installation must be approved by the ARC so please submit an External Improvement Request form to request approval from the ARC. Maturing Landscapes and your lawn Landscape conditions change as trees, shrubs, and even turf/sod matures and ages. As trees age and reach full canopy the sod/turf below is getting less and less exposure to the sun. This can cause the turf/sod to thin, or even die out depending on the amount sun exposure. There are several options that can be done in an effort to improve the grass. These include: • • • •

Planting zoysia which is more shade tolerant than Bermuda Prune or thin the branches in the tree to allow for more sunlight to reach the grassy area Aerate your lawn at least once every 2-3 years, especially areas under large trees Replace the sod with a large flower bed under the tree and plant shade-loving perennials

Bear in mind however, the resolution of aging lawn issues, including installation of new sod, is the responsibility of the homeowner. It will also require the submission of and External Improvements Form and approval by the Landscape Committee. The Landscape Committee looks forward to working with you on your requests in 2022! Marina Committee

Committee Corner By Warren Lange

The Cresswind Marina Committee (CMC) members for 2021 include:

Warren Lange Rod Quisenberry Vickie Gassman Andy Camp Gene Evans

Chairperson Vice Chairperson Secretary Member at Large Member at Large

The CMC gets a lot of questions about availability of boat slips. As of early October, there are 15 homeowners on the slip resale waiting list. As of this same time, no slips have been turned over to the HOA for resale in 2021. Another common question regards access to internet service at the marina. As part of the security camera installation earlier this year, the clubhouse WIFI network was extended to serve the new marina cameras. The camera system has been up and running well; however, due to limitations of the currently existing clubhouse network, open access to the marina network cannot be allowed at this time without jeopardizing the clubhouse network security. CMC activities over the past few months focused mostly on routine maintenance items and the budget for 2021. All of the docks were pressure washed and oiled in August. This is an annual maintenance item which is needed to preserve the deck boards and keep them looking good. The Cresswind maintenance team has been trying hard to mitigate the spider issue at the marina with environmentally safe chemicals and web removal. It will be an ongoing battle as EPA regulations do not allow use of the most effective spider killing pesticides over the lake waters. A temporary solar powered light was added by the walkway to Dock D as this area was very dark after sunset. The long-term plan is to have a larger wired light but so far this year electrical contractors have been disinterested in providing quotes. A CMC meeting/social event with boat slip owners was held on October 14th. As the year comes to an end, the CMC will be in need of two new members for 2022 as the current chairperson and the secretary are at the end of their terms. Should anyone have questions or want to discuss subjects related to the marina, please contact any of the CMC members.

Welcome Committee News

By Sue Joninas The Cresswind Welcome Committee is still reaching out to new residents, Our members are sending cards, calling, and offering their support. We let the residents know they can call us and we will help them in any way we can. We also find that neighbors on their street are reaching out to make them feel welcome. The Welcome Committee has taken over doing tours for new residents in the Clubhouse as well as outside of the Clubhouse. We have given three of these as of this news article. Resident News Eleanor Whalen and Sue Garcia Publish Their Last Newsletter! By Sue Garcia

After much contemplation, we have decided to step away from our duties as newsletter editors/material gathers. We began this venture in 2011 and have continued until now gathering news, pictures, class times, etc. for The Waterfall. It was a passion we truly loved and took immense pride in producing for the community. We truly thank the Cresswind management and Board for the pleasure of working on and seeing the newsletter grow from a 12-page online publication to what it is today which we could never have done without the help of so many! Sincerely, Eleanor & Sue

What is in a Name?

By Eleanor Whalen

In 2011, Carrie Neville, Activities Director/Assistant Property Manager, and two resident volunteers, Sue Garcia and Eleanor Whalen, took on the task of creating a community newsletter. Cresswind residents were invited to participate in a “Name the Newsletter” contest. Over 30 entries were submitted. The winner of the contest was Julie Walker [Noble Fir Trace]. Julie and her husband Tony were awarded a $40 gift certificate to Luna’s Restaurant for her winning entry. Julie said “I thought how appropriate it would be to call our newsletter The Waterfall because it is the first thing visitors and residents see when entering our beautiful community.” Thank you, Julie! Resident News CLL Random Acts of Kindness Team Everyone is struggling with something Let us be Kind, Thoughtful, Considerate Pay It Forward You are in Our Thoughts…Just Because We are merely helping each other along life’s journey These statements are at the heart of CLL Random Acts of Kindness Project. Conceived during the isolation and distress caused by COVID, this project got formally underway earlier this year through the efforts of a handful of residents. Sometime recently, you may have looked out your window at night and discovered that a solar powered lighted butterfly, accompanied by a lighted flower and/ or a small garden statue “magically” appeared in your front shrub bed. And taped to the outside of your front door was a note card adorned with a beautiful photograph of an actual Cresswind butterfly, born, fed, and freed from our Community Garden! The card with its

butterfly photo, poem, and note inside are meant for you to keep. What better symbol of being in community with others than a butterfly. The ancients believed butterflies represented ‘positive energy’ and ‘good things’ for a healthy, joyous life...your own and those with whom you communed. Our Butterfly Garden is testament to that. So, when you are walking or driving our roads at night and see a lighted butterfly in your neighbors’ front shrub bed, you will know that ‘Butterfly Blessings’ have randomly landed there. Homeowners and passersby are all invited to enjoy the ‘Blessing’ that is reflected through the lighted butterfly, for soon thereafter the Butterfly (and accompanying set) will “fly on magic wings” to bless another of our Cresswind friends and neighbors!

Resident News From the CLL John Stevens

TRAFFIC SAFETY & ROAD USE – Work Group

CLL Roads: Carts & Cars – Keeping Each Other Safe

“I’ve had this happen to me more than a few times. I’m driving behind a golf cart when ‘like a good neighbor’ the golf cart driver pulls over to let me pass. But he does so when I can’t really see what’s coming the other way. And sometimes they move over, hug the curb and continue driving, which is OK, but if I can’t see if anything is coming the other way, I’ll wait. Meanwhile the golf cart driver is waving for me to pass him. I definitely appreciate their gesture to let me pass, but it’d be a whole lot safer for me if they did so when there was a good line-of-sight for me to see any on-coming traffic.” (actual CLL resident comment) The CLL Traffic Safety & Road Use – Work Group (TSRU-WG) continues to meet with residents both formally and informally to gather concerns and ideas for promoting safe and courteous use of our community roads. This ‘grassroots’ resident-centered project is part of our HOA Board’s effort to give ‘voice’ to CLL residents as ‘stakeholders’ in helping shape the kind of ‘community’ we become. Building a community with a shared commitment to safe and courteous road use by ALL user-groups is what the TSRU project is about. Members of the TSRU-WG (John Stevens, David Jones, Tim Roth, Russ Schussler, and Stan Kopkin) believe that achieving this shared commitment to safe and courteous road use by ALL user-groups is very do-able, but requires both attitudinal and behavioral adjustments when we are out and about on our roads.

Support from CPAC-Cresswind Neighborhood Theater (CNT)

Rich St George, Wayne Blum, and other members of CNT are currently filming several CLL public service announcement (PSA) videos to help provide a light-hearted and funny series of 60-sec clips to help residents stay mindful of how to be safe and courteous when moving about our roads. The TSRU-WG would like to get as many different people as possible in these PSA video clips. If you are able and willing to be in a scene, there are many ‘bystander’ and/or ‘passive/active’ roles you can play. Reach out to John Stevens if you are interested in being part of the supporting cast.

Add Your Voice and Ideas to the CLL TSRU Project

Please contact John Stevens to add your voice and ideas to the CLL TSRU project by participating in a facilitated group conversation (maximum group size = 20 residents). These Forums will be scheduled during late-afternoons and early-evenings over the next 4-5 weeks.

Creative Spaces is a Success

By Diana Thurmon

The Artists Corner Club is very proud to have presented “Creative Spaces” in early October, featuring a tour of 13 homes/studios of our talented artisans. Two days of wonderful weather provided the opportunity to see where and how lovely works of art are created. Including painting in various mediums, wood working, pottery, and various other fine crafts, the streets were full of folks enjoying themselves and the conviviality and community spirit was in high gear. We hope to make this an annual event as the expressions of delight and approval were frequent and clearly heard. Thanks to all who opened their homes and those who attended this free event. Photos feature a few who were able to select a new piece of art from the experience.

Line Dance is My Cardio By Debbie Coursey-Prah

LINE DANCING IS MY CARDIO went from being our unofficial motto to our official motto when the Line Dance Cardio class gave me this shirt. Our goal is physical, mental, and emotional exercise through line dancing. For many in the class, line dancing is our therapy for life’s challenges. Oh, and it is FUN! This class is an ADVANCED line dance class that requires dance experience including the ability to pick up choreography quickly. If other line dance classes are not challenging enough for you, then you may be ready to join us. The class is not appropriate for “walk ins” but anyone who wants to check it out, please join us to observe. We meet in the Georgia Room on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings at 6:30pm to 8:00pm.. If you have questions, contact Debbie Coursey-Prah at drdbe@aol.com.

Time to Wrap Up 2021

By Lisa Giblin

It does not seem possible we are entering into our last quarter of 2021. The Fish Fry was enjoyed by many in September. We had fryers cranking out fish and hushpuppies while the band got us to the dance floor. The sides dishes included a resident’s famous Baked Bean recipe and coleslaw. We ended the meal with Pineapple Upside Down cake. Cannot say we do not enjoy a good meal at Cresswind. Oktoberfest was next on the calendar. Our, DJ, Tim Roth, kept us busy with Oktoberfest Trivia and a playlist that got everyone dancing. With a Beer Hall atmosphere, superbly decorated, we enjoyed Brats, Red Cabbage, Sauerkraut, German potato salad, Apple Streusel, and plenty of beer. Our Frauleins serving the beer added to the success of the event. The Cooking Club will continue its Cooking School schedule with a class being developed for November 4th. Details to follow. The Cooking Club unveiled their plans for the 2022 year in their Annual meeting on October 4th. There are exciting times ahead and we encourage residents to get involved. Without our Resident Volunteers, the Cooking Club could not survive on “Bread Alone.” Page 34

Dance Rhythms

By Wendy O’Hanlon

The Community Fund Meeting September 29th featured dancers from my class dancing to a couple upbeat Dance Rhythms routines, “Let’s Get Loud” and “Bad”. The pom poms were an added touch in keeping with the “Homecoming” theme for the meeting. At the time of this publication, we will have a couple new routines and it is not too late to come join us! The genres of music vary and the dance movement is almost entirely facing the front wall so it is easier to learn the steps and follow my lead. Cresswind Garden Club

As fall and winter start to shorten the days and as the cool weather filters in, look for the vegetable boxes in the Community Garden to be emptied of their summer fare. No more tomatoes, eggplants, summer squash, beans, etc. to harvest until next year. But the good news is that because of our mild fall and winter climate, we can plant cool season crops. Lettuces, carrots, winter squash, brussel sprouts etc. can be enjoyed fresh from our gardens.

By Sarah Galsack As every Gardener knows, winter is the time to plan for spring and summer, so with that in mind, we look forward to May 2022 when our Common Ground will be a stop on the Hall County Master Gardener’s Garden Walk. And in June, there may be an evening Garden stroll to listen to the sounds of waterfalls in the neighborhood. Stay tuned!

Those of you familiar with our Common Ground Community Garden know that we are a designated Monarch Way station. This summer and fall Lance Haney, our resident Monarch whisperer, released around 250 Monarchs in an effort to shore up the Monarch population. The garden was also designated as a stop on the Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail. This past October the garden “got happy” as our annual scarecrow population appeared. They are fun, colorful, creative, and we thank all the participants. It is a favorite spot for the residents, children, and grandchildren to visit.

Before the Club began its winter break (we do not meet in November or December) we held some informative and innovative meetings. Topics included “Creating, Organizing and Saving File Folders.” This was an interactive, hands-on demonstration. We also shared some “Hidden Genealogical Gems” and discussed “How to get the most out of the 1930 Federal Census.” The Genealogy Club is open to all residents who have an interest in researching their family history in order to pass it on to their children and grandchildren. CIC Investment Club

By Cathy Hoskinson

On October 5th, CIC Investment Club members welcomed Cresswind residents to join them for a lunch presentation on Capital Market Insights by Greg Davis, Managing Director of MFS. Jeffrey Sulka, financial advisor of Edward Jones and program host, spoke first on the Four Pillars of New Retirement: health, family, purpose and finance. In his introductory remarks, Leo Cortjens, CIC Investment Club President, invited interested guests to join the group at an upcoming meeting held at 1pm in the Clubhouse Kitchen on the first Monday of the month. Regularly scheduled agenda items include a team research presentation on a particular market segment. Every member is also a “stock advocate” reporting updated findings on club securities with recommendations to buy, sell or hold. After general discussion, the club members vote on investment opportunities. Cortjens emphasized member participation as a key factor of the group’s success reporting an 18% return on their investments so far this year. The other is education – sharing and learning from each other. Membership is limited to 30 members but there are current openings. Please contact Leo Cortjens, at leo. cortjens@gmail.com or Len Greco, Vice President, at lengreco1104@aol.com if you would like to attend. Optional photos: Jeffrey Sulka of Edward Jones and Leo Cortjens welcome guests to the October 5th presentation. Greg Davis of MFS responds to residents’ questions.

Make & Take

By Kathie Zeranski

There really has not been much going on with the Make & Take Group but there are a few things planned for the upcoming months. In November, there will be several workshops to make new bows for your mailbox swags. Most of the original bows are now either orange or have been replaced. Learn how to make a fresh new bow for your swag. Also, there will be a wreath making class. Learn how to create a beautiful wreath for the holidays using the deco mesh. Look for both of these in the Daily Updates.

Veterans Club

By Bill Edmondson

Quite a bit of progress to report this quarter…our members helping other Veterans have been busy which is more fun and beneficial than was the case during the summer. Our members devoted to performing Veteran Military Service Recognitions given on behalf of Northeast Georgia Medical Service Hospice have been very busy lately. These club members have been trained by the Hospice program and visit veterans currently in the Hospice program. They deliver a service of recognition to the Hospice patients and their family. We have done more than a half dozen the past month alone, with the latest being for a 98-year-old WWII female in Dahlonega. She was a nurse stationed in India. It was truly an honor for our three members to visit with her personally and thank her for her service to our country. She was also the very first female we have ever done a service for. We also had two other WWII vets of late, both of whom shared stories with us, some of which their families had never heard. In two cases, there were numerous family members present to witness the ceremony which makes doing them all the more special. Our members in this program have been told that our (Cresswind Vets) charity is the only group locally doing this important work. In fact, they have been told they may very well be the only ones in the state…though unverified, there are definitely very few organizations supporting our dying vets in this manner. We are so proud we can do this and thought all Cresswind would want to know. We have continued to support Veterans in need seeking financial aid. The demand is down a bit from last year, but within the past few months we have helped about four veterans in need of rent or grocery assistance. We recently had discussions with the Cresswind Community Club and are working together assisting older vets. We held our general meeting in the Clubhouse this past month. Our presenter Kimbrough Law revealed good information on potential benefits and eligibility of VA Pensions. We are also looking into other service opportunities…Coat Drive and Food Drive this fall, and possible assistance (volunteer manpower) for Habitat for Humanity. Stay tuned to Maggie’s Updates for any late breaking news. November/December 2021

The RV Club “Staying in Our Comfort Zone”

By Priscilla Stockwell

Traveling in an RV lets you stay in your comfort zone with everything you need right there in your rig. With our continuing COVID situation, we strive to remain as safe as possible. The U.S. Travel Association reports that the average American is nearly four times more likely to say they feel safe traveling in a personal vehicle than getting on a domestic flight. Eighteen (18) Cresswind RV Club members and four Cresswind friends recently traveled to Orange Beach, Alabama for a week of “camping”. Pickleball was played every day (seems like we cannot take pickleball play out of our Cresswind folks), along with biking to the beach, outlet shopping, evening play of “bean bag softball”, card games, eating together at Lambert’s Café (where they throw warm bread rolls at customers), ice cream at Stacey’s Old Tyme Soda Fountain, and daily sharing of stories.

The following trips have been planned for the remainder of 2021 and 2022:

• November 6 – November 13, 2021: Lake Rousseau (Crystal River, Fl) • December 2 – December 6, 2021: Two Rivers (Nashville, TN)

• • • • • •

March 7 – March 13, 2022: Lazydays Resort (Seffner, Fl) April 24 – April 28, 2022: Creek Fire (Savannah, Ga) April 28 – May 2, 2022: Mt Pleasant (Charleston, Ga) May 3 – May 6, 2022: Cape Hatteras Resort (Rodanthe, NC) September 10 – September 18, 2022: (Memphis, TN/ Arkansas) October 13 – October 18: Gatlinburg, TN

RV camping offers a chance to go outside and enjoy the outdoors. We welcome new members and ideas for future trips. Come join the group for an experience you will not soon forget! Visit our web site at https://sites.google.com/site/cllrvclub/ or email us at cll.rvclub@gmail.com. Our web site has the detailed upcoming trip details.

Social Singles

By Elaine Vetter

Social Singles finished the summer with an evening of ‘Boomer Trivia’. Apparently, just because we lived through the 50s, 60s and 70s that does not mean we knew the answers to questions from that era! Lots of laughter along with major head scratching trying to remember what at one time we knew we would never forget. Summer activities also included several bowl painting parties with the finished products going to the North Georgia Mountain Food luncheon which will be held in late September. The fall schedule continues to take shape and will include the usual walks/hikes, bowling, mingles, group lunches and dinners plus plans are being finalized for a day at Don Carter State Park. We also hope to reschedule the rained-out trip to Gibbs Gardens and possibly a tubing trip down the Chattahoochee River in Helen. If you are single and would like more information or would like to join the fun, please access our link on the Cresswind website and share your contact information. We would love to have you join us. Tennis News

By Sandy Barmak

The crisp fall weather led to lots of tennis activity on our courts. Monday mornings Dan Skeels’ Silverball team was in action against other community teams. The Cresswind 3.0 USTA 55+ USTA ladies also played on Mondays. Thanks to the organizational skills of Judy Mota, our Thursday Ladies Round Robin has been filling three courts most Thursdays. October saw the return of our resident only mixed doubles league for some friendly competition. Shirley Osterloh and Norman Slovis were co-captains of the Blasters, and Gordon Watts and Lynn Williams co-captained the Shooters. Lou Dunn and her committee planned a wonderful Pre-Halloween Mixed double Round Robin Social for October 23rd. Lots of great tennis happening and keeping our courts busy! Congratulations to our very own Gene Evans and Harry Takemura who won the 55+ B-class doubles championship at the Northeast Georgia Tennis Tournament. Harry deserves even more kudos for winning the USTA Men’s 3.5 55+ doubles GA state championships, and then he and his partner went on to win the USTA sectional tournament. His success earned him and his partner a spot in the USTA National championships which were held in Orlando in mid-October, after the deadline for this article. There was enthusiastic participation at our fall clinics led by Bill Papciak and his team of skilled instructors. Wednesday evening clinics saw many additional players come out to polish their shots, improve their strategies, and become stronger tennis players. Everyone, from rusty returnees to seasoned players, is welcome to join the fun. New clinic dates will be announced in the Daily Update. Congratulations to Bill who was appointed to be a Board Advisor to the USTA/Northeast Georgia Tennis Association (NEGTA). He will be involved in both Player Development and Governance for the NEGTA. If you have not been an active participant in our tennis activities, we hope you will come out and join us during open play. Times are posted on our website, https://cresswindll.wixsite.com/cwtennis, and on the bulletin board by the courts. Plans are being made for our CLL Tennis Club Annual meeting on November 17th and a holiday party on December 8th. If you have any questions about tennis, feel free to contact our president, Sandy Barmak at sandybarmak@gmail.com .

Community Travel Club

By Pam Papciak

The Community Travel Club (CTC) has two special trips planned for the November and December. We hope you will consider joining us. On November 5th, we travel to the Appalachian foothills of North Georgia to board the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, a heritage railway line, for a ride along the Toccoa River. The vibrant autumn leaves should be at their peak. There will be a stop in McCaysville for lunch and shopping in this quaint southern town. All Aboard! Cresswind’s December holidays are always made special with CTC’s annual Christmas trip. This year we will be visiting Charleston for 4 days/ 3 nights from December 13th through December 16th. No matter how often you visit Charleston, it never gets old. There is always something new and exciting to see and do. Southern Living magazine rates Charleston as one of its top choices to visit at Christmas. The city shows off its festive spirit with holiday lights and all the trimmings. The Charleston trip includes hotel accommodations in the historic district, Charleston City and Boone Hall Plantation tours, a spectacular Holiday Light show, lots of delicious eating, warm Southern hospitality, and so much more! Year 2021 has provided CTC travelers with memories of SW Georgia’s Providence Canyon and the Little White House, Greenville and the BMW Assembly Plant, Atlanta Soccer, Braves Baseball, Harrah’s Cherokee Casino, and our local “A Taste of Gainesville” trip. And we have big plans for 2022! To find out more information and to sign up for any of these trips, please go to the Community Travel Club website, access on the Cresswind website and press on the specific trip link of your choice for additional information. To participate in any CTC trip, you must be a club member, which is easily done by writing a check to CTC for $5.00 per person. Please mark your calendar for the first Thursday of each month at 4pm for our General Meetings. Hope to see you there!

The Falls Investment Club Update

By Dan Gershkowitz

The Falls Investment Club, LLC (“TFIC”) has resumed its in-person meetings after having monthly Zoom calls for 18 months. TFIC was founded in 2014 and we have approximately 20 members. Our members reflect a wide range of interests and backgrounds – from those whose portfolios are managed by outside investment advisors to those who are actively involved with their personal investments. We are currently looking to add one or two new members. We meet the second Monday of every month at 6:30pm (so that we are able to see the kickoff on Monday Night Football!) in the Kitchen area in the Club House. The main objectives/goals of TFIC are learning, education, sharing investment ideas, as well as “learning by doing.” In this regard, we trade a variety of securities that the group elects to purchase. It is a majority vote on each security, after we have a presentation and discuss the merits of the potential investment versus other alternatives. If you have any interest in additional information or want to attend one of our upcoming meetings as a guest, please let any one of TFIC’s officers know; they are: Dan Gershkowitz, Jack Hollfelder, Dave Wilson, Bob McMaster or Rich Carter. Come and enjoy learning about investing!

Writers in the Wind - Cresswind Creative Writing Group By Laurie Homa The Writer’s Group wrapped up the year with the October meeting and what a year it has been! We added new members this year that have brought innovative ideas and talents to the group. Thank you for joining us. Susan DeCrescenzo and Katrena Jackson just returned from a Writer’s Retreat at Lake Junaluska in Waynesville, North Carolina. They presented the best of the creative writing tips learned to our group at the October meeting. The new Writers in the Wind binder containing our short stories has been updated and is on the coffee table in the Cresswind Library. Take time to relax and read while waiting for your next meeting to start. Two of our members self-published their books this year on Amazon Kindle. Several writers had their short stories published on Mom’s Favorite Reads, an online magazine. Boom Magazine, published in Athens, Georgia, is another outlet our writers chose for publishing their work. Dalton Ruer, Katrena Jackson, and Laurie Homa will have the unveiling of the first fifteen chapters of the collaborative book they have been writing over the last seven months. You will have to wait until January to find out how the critique went and if we will continue this project. We will be back to our regular meeting day, the last Thursday of every month from 1:30 pm to 3:30pm come the new year. We wish you all a Happy Holiday Season. If you would like to sharpen your creative writing skills, please come join us in 2022. Contact Laurie Homa at m2old4this@aol.com for more information.
