MY COMMUNITY, MY PASSION

STEVE KOONER THE LAWYER

S

teve Kooner is a very successful lawyer and the owner of the law firm, Steve Kooner Law Corporation. Apart from being a successful and famous lawyer, Steve represents our community on various social justice issues. He wants to give back to the community which has showed him immense love & support, and made him successful. Here’s Steve Kooner’s story and his thoughts about serving the community, in his own words. I was born in Vancouver and I grew up in various parts of the lower mainland. I came from humble beginnings. As a child, I experienced difficulties learning how to read until about grade 3. Although I was born in Canada, I was in ESL until grade 3. Punjabi was my first language and I learned English in school. Although I struggled in school in my early years and I was even held back a year in grade 1 which I had to do twice, I always wanted to study and excel at life from an early age. I was 8 years old when I decided I wanted to become a lawyer. I liked the idea of becoming a lawyer because I liked solving problems and conflicts from an early age. This idea originally started by resolving conflicts between my siblings while growing up by advocating for the 2 different sides. While I was growing up, my parents tried to keep us busy as kids. I spent a lot of my time as a kid picking berries during the summers and delivering newspapers year-round. I was also enrolled in the martial art of Taekwondo as a child. I became a black belt at the young age of 11 in Taekwondo. This was quite an achievement for an 11-year-old kid. Thereafter I got to teach other children Taekwondo exercises. I grew up with a fondness for the arts and music, as

8

THE TIMES OF CANADA JULY 2022

my father, KS Kooner, used to be a well-known professional singer in the Punjabi community when I was a child. Although I struggled in school in my early years, I was always a hard worker who was determined. This eventually led me to receiving very good grades in grade 12 and getting early admission to Simon Fraser University. When I was in university, I had some people tell me that I wouldn’t be able to become a lawyer because I was too innocent and not “chalaak” enough and I wasn’t a strong reader. However, I just kept going and I graduated from Simon Fraser University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and then I was accepted into law school. I graduated from the University of Calgary Law School with a Juris Doctor law degree. After graduating from the University of Calgary Law School, I came back to British Columbia and got enrolled in the Law Society of British Columbia admissions program by articling with a small law firm based in Surrey. I received a lot of good opportunities to learn and perform as an articled student at the small law firm based in Surrey. It developed significant confidence in me as I helped resolve numerous cases with good results, which included successfully representing a client at a mediation under the supervision of another lawyer, successfully reaching a settlement in Provincial Court for a client against a major grocery store chain for a slip & fall, and conducting a motor vehicle accident trial in Provincial Court. The articling experience confidence led me to go out on my own after two months of becoming a licenced lawyer.

I set up my law firm, Steve Kooner Law Corporation in 2006 and this law firm grew from one person to numerous lawyers and support staff with 3 offices in Surrey, Vancouver, and Abbotsford. I built a brand through television and radio as the Community’s Son and Brother (“Apna Munda Teh Veer”) who just happened to be a lawyer. I have been blessed with significant good client reviews and winning awards such as the Consumer Choice Award and the Three Best Rated Recognition. I love being a lawyer, because I love representing people and resolving issues. From my career as a lawyer, I have learned to never give up, because I started my law firm from scratch and zero files and I worked hard for many years to see the fruits and I took my law firm to a position where there were numerous lawyers, support staff, and offices. My community has given me so much love over the years and I have wanted

to represent my community on larger social justice issues for some time now. Since I came from humble beginnings and I struggled during my early years in school, I never knew as a kid that I would get to where I am today in terms of being a well-known successful lawyer. But if it wasn’t for my own community showing me love as their “Apna Munda”, my success wouldn’t have been possible. My early childhood difficulties and the success as a lawyer through the love from my community, has given me the passion to represent my community on larger social justice issues. And this passion led me to put my name forward for a high profile, Liberal Party of Canada nomination contest in 2021. In this nomination contest campaign, I was instrumental in organizing a significant part of the Punjabi community, who signed up as members in significant numbers in support of my nomination bid in a very short period of time.

9

THE TIMES OF CANADA JULY 2022

a lot of youth mentorship programs being done by various good hearted community organizations to tackle the gang violence and drugs problem in our community. However, coming from Surrey’s business community, I have also recognized that our business community can be more involved in providing mentorship in the form of networking, career opportunities, and advancement opportunities for youth that are at risk of getting involved in or are involved in the gangs and drugs lifestyle. The entrepreneurial skillsets of at-risk youth or gang involved individuals can be diverted to positive legit entrepreneurial opportunities within our own business community. After thinking long and hard about the entrepreneurial nature of our youth, I started planning and organizing for an entrepreneurial youth mentorship initiative which will allow our at-risk youth or gang involved youth to transfer their entrepreneur skillsets to positive legit entrepreneurial opportunities within our business community. The aim of such an entrepreneurial youth mentorship initiative is to get rid of the significant gang violence related deaths in our community that have touched all of us by diverting our youth from gang and drugs activity to meaningful positive legit advancement opportunities.

My significant membership sign ups within a short period of time attracted the attention of the general political community, as I did not have any political experience and was unknown in the political community. After the nomination contest finished, I made a commitment to myself and to my supporters that I would continue to serve the community in whatever way I could. Thus, since the nomination contest finished, I have helped out in various federal liberal election campaigns, a Law Society of British Columbia Bencher Election campaign,

and a BC Liberal leadership campaign. I have also tried to help out with various community organizations providing community service. By participating in community service endeavours, I have discovered that I have a passion for helping the youth in our community. Throughout my legal career, I have informally mentored lots of aspiring lawyers and I formally acted as a Principal teacher to many law students under the Law Society of British Columbia Admissions Program in recent years. In terms of the general community, I have noticed that we have

This initiative involves a phenomenal task and many critics will say one initiative will not be able to help solve an issue which has affected our community for so long. However, the heart is in the right place, and there is a will to help. From speaking to many people in our community, I have heard that there is a need to connect entrepreneurial skill sets to positive legit advancement opportunities already available within our business community. I am hopeful that our community will come together around this initiative, because our community has a big heart and is always on the forefront of giving and philanthropy.

O

n May 24, 2022, to a packed room at Tsawwassen Springs, Mayor George Harvie announced his full slate of candidates that will run under the Achieving for Delta team in the upcoming municipal election. “Over the last four years, I have worked to deliver on record investments while keeping taxes low and Delta debtfree,” said Harvie. “I’m proud of our achievements, but there is much more to do. It’s time to elect a full team of Achieving for Delta council and school board candidates to continue moving our community forward.” “Our Achieving for Delta team represents a wide range of experience, ages, and backgrounds,” said Harvie. “With strong representation from both North and South Delta, every single one of our candidates is qualified and ready to lead. I am incredibly proud of the full team that we have assembled.” Leading Harvie’s School Board slate is three-time Trustee and current School Board Chair, Val Windsor. “For the past three elections I have run as an

independent. This is the first time in my career that I have run with a team,” said Windsor. “George Harvie knows how to bring people together and I am proud to be running on his team. It is vital that Council and School Board continue to work together to deliver on needed projects for our community.” Incumbent Councillor Dylan Kruger said he was excited to get to work under Harvie’s leadership. “George Harvie has assembled the most diverse and qualified team in our city’s history,” said Kruger. “Under Mayor Harvie’s leadership, our team is organized, motivated, and ready to work hard to win the support of Delta residents.” On May 24th, incumbent Councillor Bruce McDonald and School Board Trustee Laura Dixon announced their retirement from public office, offering up full endorsements for Mayor George Harvie and his Achieving for Delta team of candidates. Delta is one of the best communities in Canada to live and raise a family. Together, let’s make it number one.” Harvie is set to lay out a comprehensive platform over the coming months that will focus on low taxes, safer communities, keeping families and seniors together, and achieving investment for a more livable and climate-resilient Delta. The municipal election will be held on October 15, 2022.

Is the

CANADIAN DREAM

No Longer Achievable?

T

he American dream is commonly described as a happy life built by working hard and consisting of a good job, a house with a yard, and disposable income. While popular culture refers

to this ideal as the American dream, Canadians share these ideals with our American neighbours. Some call this the Canadian Dream. Owning and living in a home custom built to your needs is perhaps the pinnacle of

the Canadian Dream. However, the rising cost of land and construction has made the Canadian Dream unattainable for many, especially in B.C. The Covid-19

16

THE TIMES OF CANADA JULY 2022

pandemic has made it even worse. One of the factors contributing to the current housing crisis is the disruption to the global supply chain, which has caused rapid upward fluctuation in the cost of construction materials. In some cases, the cost of materials has doubled or tripled since the Covid-19 pandemic began. While the larger forces at play determine the cost of housing in Canada, certain factors in your control can help protect against some of the risks associated with rising housing costs. One of those things is properly negotiating and documenting the terms of an agreement. Let’s use a new home construction or renovation as an example. Picture this, you recently decided to renovate your kitchen or are in the process of building a new house that needs a kitchen. You hire a contractor and explain to them exactly what you envision for your space. They get on board with your ideas, and you have a brief conversation about the price, the start date of the renovations, and your expectations. However, unbeknownst to you or the contractor, the supplier of the materials increases the price of the cabinets you chose. Who pays for the increased cost as a result of the increase in the cost of the materials: you or the contractor? The seeds for a potential dispute have been sown. While clearly negotiated and documented agreements are generally helpful, they are especially helpful in today’s volatile real estate industry. Some of the benefits of a clear and documented agreement are:

1. Clarity of terms: the parties

to the agreement know who is responsible for what. In the above example, if there was a documented fixed price agreement, the cost of the increased materials would likely be borne by the contractor. If, on the other hand, the agreement was a cost, plus one, the cost would likely be borne by

the homeowner.

2. Scope of work: the process of

documenting an agreement is likely to lead you to turn your mind to matters that you may not think about if you’re just having an oral discussion. To keep using the example from above, when writing down the agreement with the kitchen contractor, you would likely turn your mind to the details, such as the accessories you want and if any of them are going to be an extra cost.

Arora Zbar LLP advises clients both during contract negotiation/drafting and dispute resolution. We can be reached by email at hello@arorazbar.com or by phone at 604-260-6890. To learn more about our firm, please visit www.arorazbar.com

3. Dispute resolution: while a clearly documented agreement cannot eliminate the potential for a dispute entirely, it will serve as a definitive guiding document from which a decision-maker can decide who is responsible for what. A written agreement also significantly increases the chances of the early resolution of a dispute because no or little oral evidence is needed regarding the terms of the agreement.

A written agreement does not necessarily have to be complicated. While it is beneficial to have everything consolidated into one single document, if that is impractical for you, consider confirming the terms of the agreement in an email or a text message. If terms of a contract are being negotiated or changed over time, use the same method, i.e. text or email, to document a new term or change to an existing term.

HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS

nce a year, go someplace you’ve never been before” – Dalai Lama. This ancient quote has been trending on social media recently. Why? According to research, millennials are traveling a considerable amount more than previous generations. More than ever before, many are taking vacations to “off the beaten track” locations around the world. All that exotic travel sounds expensive, but it doesn’t have to be! Keep reading for the best cheap holiday destinations.

PORTUGAL

Old towns, lagoon islands, salt pans, ancient fortresses, cliff top views and sandy surf beaches are some of the many places you can visit when heading to Portugal. Accommodation varies in price. But there are many B&Bs, vacation rentals, or cheaper hotels to choose from. If you head to a luxury 5-star, all-inclusive hotel, you’ll not only spend megabucks but you might miss out on the local experience. Go for cheaper accommodation and spend your time hanging out with the locals for an authentic experience. Many budget airlines travel to Portugal, some even with regular bargains and deals, which means your flight might be even cheaper! To travel around, you don’t need your own car as there are plenty of buses and trains that run regularly at fair prices. Seafood is famous in Portugal, generally cooked in the simplest of ways, yet with the most exquisite tastes. Go to local bistros and restaurants for an original taste of Portugal. These establishments will be a lot cheaper than many touristy hotels and restaurants. Don’t forget to try the local Port wine for an authentic Portuguese beverage.

and in abundance. Another option is hiring a bicycle or even a motorbike for exploring the area at your own leisure. Food is extremely cheap, with good value buffets and sizzling street food available for just a few dollars. In many other countries, the prices for 5-star hotels are extortionate. But one of the best things about Thailand is that you might be able to afford the luxury, because of the exchange rate and lower prices.

CROATIA

With popular tourist destinations like Greece going through financial instabilities, many are heading to Croatia instead. If you avoid peak season (July to August), Croatia can prove to be one of the best cheap holiday destinations to visit in Europe. With historical architecture, waterfalls, pebbled beaches, mountainous coastlines and great nightlife, Croatia ticks many boxes for all kinds of travelers.

THAILAND

Thailand has been a popular destination for quite a number of years. But it is still one of the best cheap holiday destinations, mostly because of the exchange rate. Thailand is fun, energetic and full of culture. With historical palaces, tropical islands, caves, mountains and jungle safaris, there is a lot to do in Thailand.

There are also many activities you can do–snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, hiking, zip lining and more. Croatia is also good for taking the kids, as there are plenty of fun things for them to do.

There are nearly a hundred temples in Chiang Mai which you can tour freely. There are also many street markets with lots of bargains to be found. When traveling from Canada, even though the distance is far, the flights are cheap. Travel within Thailand is also great for budget travelers with buses, trains, and trishaw taxis cheap

21

THE TIMES OF CANADA JULY 2022

Cheap flights are abundant, and public transport is easy with many buses and ferries easily available. The Mediterranean style food and local wines are both tasty and for reasonable prices. You’ll eat your way through your vacation if you decide on visiting Croatia.

ZANZIBAR

Zanzibar boasts a variety of gorgeous attractions. From pristine beaches with coral reefs to spice tours and old forts, Zanzibar

INDONESIA

Indonesia, although a long-haul destination, is extremely popular thanks to low travel costs and cheap activities. Made up of thousands of islands, Indonesia is full of rich culture and beauty. Indonesia is very varied, with monkey jungles, religious temples, volcanoes, shipwrecks, and mountains. There are also many fun things to do, from snorkeling and scuba diving to white water rafting and quad biking. Many backpackers choose Indonesia for its cheap accommodation, as there are many cheap hostels to stay in. If you want to upgrade to a hotel room, you generally won’t have to pay too much more either. Return flights to Indonesia vary during the time of year but are generally under $800. Most of the main islands have buses to travel around, but a common method of travel is by ferry (from island to island). Food in Indonesia is a similar price to many other Asian countries, such as Thailand. But the taste is obviously different wherever you go. The national dish is Nasi Goreng, which can be bought for just a couple of dollars. is an island full of beautiful contrasts which makes it one of the best cheap holiday destinations. Although the flights may be a bit more pricey, your dollars will stretch far while you are there. The cheapest and most convenient way to travel is using the “dala dala” which is a shared minibus/taxi. There are several around, and you’ll get a real authentic experience if you use one. It’s not overly expensive to hire a personal driver either when compared to other countries. Accommodation can also be done on a budget, with many vacation rentals and hotels being great value for money. Zanzibar has a variety of foods to try, and most are for seriously cheap prices too. Make sure to try their famous Pilaf rice and their meat kebabs. Don’t forget to try some sugar cane juice too! The Best Cheap Holiday Destinations: Where Will You Go? As you can see, you can travel the world and experience new cultures and lifestyles without breaking the bank. Make sure to do your research, and use price comparison websites to find great deals on accommodation. Don’t forget to keep checking your flights as they will go up and down depending on the time of year. And plan for activities, but don’t be scared to try something new. The same goes for food–head to where the locals go and experience the real deal!

THE NEW HORIZON FOUNDATION N

o country can ever truly flourish if it stifles the potential of its women and deprives itself of the contributions of half of its citizens.” – Michelle Obama. My mom always mentioned the substantial prevalence of gender discrimination in India and how a male child is preferred over a female child. I got to experience it

firsthand during my trip to India in 2016. I witnessed the struggles experienced by girls in rural India due to a lack of amenities, adequate staffing, and access to education facilities. I also learnt about the school dropout rates and socio-economic vulnerability experienced by these communities. The findings from a study done by Project

Drawdown show that “diminished education level among women and girls is the 6th most significant factor contributing to global climate change. If there are adequate measures taken to increase the literacy level among women and girls, then by 2050, 51.48 gigatons of CO2 can be reduced from the environment”.

THE TIMES OF CANADA JULY 2022

The New Horizons Foundation is my way of giving back to the community who deserve better. I started the foundation with the support of my parents, my sister Anika and guidance from my mentor from YLSBC Ravi Safaya. Our foundation is a non-profit organization that aspires to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged people, especially children, with a focus on the girl child.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to help improve the quality of life for most girls in rural India and contribute to the sustenance of sanitation infrastructure in their schools. The New Horizons Foundation aims to support the development of girls’ education in underprivileged sections of society through partnership, support and capacity building in partnership with the grassroots organizations to increase the number of funds and support to make a positive

impact in their lives. Interestingly, there is indeed a correlation between the education levels among women and girls and the impact it has on global climate change. The findings from a study done by Project Drawdown have proved that

km from the Bengaluru metro. Census India 2011 stats show a population of 19,124 residents with 10,089 males and 9,035 females. Education literacy is 54%. Mainalli has 12 government schools of which 4 are solely for girls. There are low enrollment and school attendance of girls in these schools as a girl due to a lack of basic hygiene and sanitation facilities such as toilets and washrooms, and the availability of hygiene products. It is difficult to imagine the living and educational conditions of girls in such places. A little help, initiative and funding can contribute to the upliftment of the living condition of these students.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE:

New Horizons Foundation will be working with individuals, organizations, partners, and other contributors and all proceeds will be used in the following ways: Create and maintain toilet and washroom facilities that are sustainable clean, sanitary and safe. Provide hygiene products in schools Remove or reduce the barriers to attending school and learning – such as providing supplementary teaching assistants and tutors in order to increase the staff to students ratio Contribute to other high priority and key outcome initiatives to help and sustain attendance and school participation Let us all join hands in making the world a better place where we learn to respect and treat people equally by working towards a common goal. BENEFITS of COCONUT OIL

that may change your perspective turning all LDL cholesterols in your body to HDL cholesterols. This means that any unhealthy and dangerous cholesterol found in your body gets converted to improve your health and reduce your cholesterol levels.

2. Coconut

I

t’s no secret that coconut oil has become very popular all over the world. With all its benefits and uses it can definitely be on the top of your next shopping list. Here are six benefits of coconut oil that may change your perspective.

1. High in saturated fats, your body automatically becomes healthier

oil is easier to digest and passes through the body quickly. It turns into energy rather than fat because it passes through the liver. Whilst it is an easily digestible food it also adds great flavour and volume to most of your dishes that makes the body crave more.

3. It also treats UTIs and kidney

infections. The components that make up coconut oil have antibacterial properties that help to speed up inflammation in the kidneys. The water of the coconut is also beneficial when trying to

heal any kidney infections or UTIs.

4. The coconut oil improves energy

making a day easier to handle. As it does not get stored as fat and gets converted into energy, like most food, it helps you to live your day without feeling tired or fatigued. Your metabolism also increases to help you with digestion throughout the day.

5. Besides being consumed, coconut

oil can also be applied on the skin. Components that make up this oil helps to heal skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, burns and dandruff. Its hydrating feature cures any flaky or damaged skin that does not have moisture anymore.

6. Best of all, it is an oil that does

not contain carbohydrates. Most oils don’t actually contain carbohydrates but they often don’t settle well in the stomach if a lot is consumed. This oil, on the other hand, agrees with many of the body’s organs and helps them to fight off disease and infection whilst being digested.

So these are the six benefits of coconut oil that may change your perspective and views. All facts have been scientifically proven but it is always advisable to check with your doctor if you have any adverse effects. Before deciding to only consume coconut oil, keep in mind that to survive and to be healthy, your body needs to consume all types of food from the various food groups.

LEMON-GINGER CHICKEN BREASTS METHOD • Make pouches with the chicken

• • •

• •

C

hicken can be a bit boring, but there are so many ways of cooking it. One of them is this lemon-ginger chicken breasts recipe. You need three or four chicken breasts, depending on their size, aluminium foil and a roasting tray. This dish can serve 3-4 people depending on how many chicken breasts you use.

INGREDIENTS

3 or 4 chicken breasts The juice of a lemon 1 inch piece of ginger 1 or 2 cloves of garlic A small bunch of parsley 1 teaspoon of sweet paprika 1 red onion Olive oil Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

breasts so that they can be stuffed easily. Lay them on pieces of foil on a roasting tray. Pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius, 400 degrees Fahrenheit, or gas mark 6. Put all the other ingredients, except the olive oil, into a blender and whizz to make a paste. Spread the paste evenly on the chicken breasts and close them. Drizzle them with the olive oil. Cover tightly with the foil and bake for an hour. Turn the oven down to 150 degrees Celsius, 300 degrees Fahrenheit, or gas mark 2 and roast for a further half an hour. Turn off the oven and leave to settle for 10 minutes. You can serve the chicken breasts with pasta, rice, other grains and mashed potatoes, or a salad, depending on the season and how you feel.

This dish can be served hot or cold. If you like spicy food, you could add a teaspoon of red chilli powder to the blender, or some fresh rosemary and thyme. You could also add 2 chopped tomatoes and use fresh basil. There are so many variations, you need never get bored with this simple dish. The beauty of this dish is that apart from lowering the temperature of the oven, you don’t need to check that the chicken breasts are OK. When you cook them in foil, all the flavours are retained and the chicken is succulent. If you want a more lemony flavour, you can rub lemon juice into the pouches you have made of the breasts.

MELON SLUSHIES T

hese DIY melon slushies are the COOLEST summertime treat. They can be made in minutes and kids are crazy for them. They’re like MAGIC!

INGREDIENTS WATERMELON-LIME

One 6 to 7 lb. watermelon Simple syrup Zest of 2 limes Juice of 4 limes (about 1/2 cup total)

HONEYDEW-GINGER-MINT 2 4-lb. honeydew melons Simple syrup 2 tbsp. fresh grated ginger 4 sprigs fresh mint

CANTALOUPE-BASIL

1 6-lb. cantaloupe Simple syrup 2 large sprigs fresh basil

DIRECTIONS

Remove the skin and seeds from the melon (pick one from above); cut into 2-inch pieces (you should be left with about 4 pounds total). Make the simple syrup: In a small saucepan, combine 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, 1/4 cup water, and 1/4 teaspoon salt; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer (don’t stir) until the sugar dissolves, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the flavorings (everything but the melon); let cool completely. Strain into a small bowl or measuring cup. In a blender, working in two batches, puree half the simple syrup mixture and half the melon until smooth. Strain into a metal loaf pan or square pan; repeat with remaining syrup and melon. Cover and freeze until set, about 8 hours. When ready to serve, using a fork, scrape the surface of the melon ice to create large flakes. Transfer to glasses, top with a splash of soda water, and serve with additional fruit, if desired.

Tips for

DECORATING YOUR FIRST HOME

M

oving into your first house is a liberating, landmark life passage. After you’ve freed yourself of your college futon and your roommate’s attempt at fine art, it’s time to come up with a plan for

turning your empty shell of a house into an inviting home. Here are some suggestions for pulling it off:

CLEAN HOUSE AT THE OLD PLACE. Even before you make an

offer on a new place, get ahead of the game by starting this process. This critical first step will not only make your current digs easier to pack up, but it will put you miles ahead during move-in. Be strong and rid yourself

44

THE TIMES OF CANADA JULY 2022

of anywhere from 25 percent to 50 percent of your old stuff: wobbly furniture in the attic, faulty appliances in the garage, questionable accessories you received as gifts. This is the perfect time to start over. Pare down your accumulated possessions to the minimal amount. Have a garage sale, auction it off on eBay or donate it to charity. You’ll be amazed at what you won’t miss.

the house are commonly two different things. Maybe that $5,000 you were going to spend on renovating the bathroom isn’t quite as important as beefing up the kitchen and dining area for maximum entertaining purposes. And you may figure out that the living room love-seat would work much better in your master bedroom and the master bedroom’s chaise will work better in the den.

START WITH THE BEDROOM.

FIGHT THE URGE TO MATCH.

It’s where you’ll be spending almost a third of your time when you’re at home, after all. If you’re on a tight budget, opt for new bedding first, but don’t skimp on thread count! Buy as well as you can afford to spend in this area — it makes a huge difference. If you have a little more money, paint the bedroom walls to compliment your new bedding. Still more cash in your pocket? Add coordinating window treatments. Early risers should opt for a lighter palette of colors and more translucent treatments. Night owls who like to sleep in will probably likely be more satisfied with deeper tones and more substantial coverings that block out the light. If you’re really ready to splurge, buy that bed you’ve always dreamed about. And choose carefully. It should mirror your personality, fit your room comfortably and stay with you for years.

Retail stores love to perpetuate the fallacy that everything has to match. They would love for you to buy everything in sets, but don’t do it! A few pieces with the same styling are fine, but any more than that and your home has the lifeless, generic look of a furniture showroom. Make sure your own personal style shows through, which most likely isn’t bland, beige and boring. Top priority should be proportion, scale and balance of your furniture and accessories within each room. Don’t shove five pieces of oversized lounge furniture into a 15x5 den that has a modest 8-foot ceiling. It will look like a clown car. Conversely, putting only a low buffet and a delicate, round dining table for four into a 20x30 room with a soaring 12foot ceiling will look equally awkward and unsatisfying.

DON’T BUY EVERYTHING ALL AT ONCE. Live in your new house for at least two months before you make any significant purchases. How you think you’re going to use the house and how you actually live in

TIE EVERYTHING TOGETHER WITH COLOR. If you’ve moved into your first place with furniture that spans the 1960s to now, don’t worry. The easiest, most economical way to overcome this seemingly insurmountable problem is unifying through color. Let’s say you have a sofa that has only one thing in common with the furniture in the rest of your living room: a tiny bit of the color in the fabric is the same as the less dominant color in the rest of the room’s upholstery. Solution? Play up that similarity and make it your living room’s unifying wall color. If that’s too much hard labor for you, find curtains, rugs or accessories in this common hue and see how the pieces begin to

complement each other.

SOLVE PRACTICAL PROBLEMS INEXPENSIVELY. If your kitchen

cabinets are drab, for instance, freshen them with paint and change out the hardware. And don’t bother installing overly decorative (and very expensive) cabinet hardware on cheaply fabricated woodwork — it will look out of place and the money can be put to better use elsewhere. In the bathroom, something as simple as replacing the lighting can immediately improve the room’s appearance. If you find the typical incandescent R-type lamps in your new place, replace them with the less “yellow” PAR-type bulbs. Another inexpensive solution with a big payoff is installing dimmer switches to keep light levels low for a midnight bathroom break.

SEASONAL ALLERGIES

A

llergies occur when your immune system reacts to a foreign substance — such as pollen, bee venom or pet dander — or a food that doesn’t cause a reaction in most people. Spring means flower buds and blooming trees — and if

you’re one of the millions of people who have seasonal allergies, it also means sneezing, congestion, a runny nose and other bothersome symptoms. Seasonal allergies — also called hay fever and allergic rhinitis — can make you feel miserable.

SYMPTOMS

Allergy symptoms, which depend on the substance involved, can affect your airways, sinuses and nasal passages, skin, and digestive system. Allergic reactions can range from mild to severe. In some severe cases,

48

THE TIMES OF CANADA JULY 2022

allergies can trigger a life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis. Hay fever, also called allergic rhinitis, can cause: • Sneezing • Itching of the nose, eyes or roof of the mouth • Runny, stuffy nose • Watery, red or swollen eyes (conjunctivitis)

RISK FACTORS

You might be more likely to develop an allergy if you: • Have a family history of asthma or allergies, such as hay fever, hives or eczema • Are a child • Have asthma or another allergic condition

DIAGNOSIS

To evaluate whether you have an allergy, your doctor will likely: • Ask detailed questions about signs and symptoms • Perform a physical exam. • Have you keep a detailed diary of symptoms and possible trigger.

SKIN TEST- A doctor or nurse will prick your skin and expose you to small amounts of the proteins found in potential allergens. If you’re allergic, you’ll likely develop a raised bump (hive) at the test location on your skin. BLOOD TEST- Specific IgE (sIgE)

blood testing, commonly called radioallergosorbent test (RAST) or ImmunoCAP testing, measures the amount of allergy-causing antibodies in your bloodstream, known as immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies. A blood sample is sent to a medical laboratory, where it can be tested for evidence of sensitivity to possible allergens.

REDUCE YOUR EXPOSURE TO ALLERGY TRIGGERS

To reduce your exposure to the things that trigger your allergy signs and

symptoms (allergens): • Stay indoors on dry, windy days. The best time to go outside is after a good rain, which helps clear pollen from the air. • Delegate lawn mowing, weed pulling and other gardening chores that stir up allergens. • Remove clothes you’ve worn outside and shower to rinse pollen from your skin and hair. • Don’t hang laundry outside — pollen can stick to sheets and towels. • Wear a pollen mask if you do outside chores.

TAKE EXTRA STEPS WHEN POLLEN COUNTS ARE HIGH

Seasonal allergy signs and symptoms can flare up when there’s a lot of pollen in the air. These steps can help you reduce your exposure: • Check your local TV or radio station, your local newspaper, or the Internet for pollen forecasts and current pollen levels. • If high pollen counts are forecasted, start taking allergy medications before your symptoms start. • Close doors and windows at night or any other time when pollen counts are high. • Avoid outdoor activity in the early morning when pollen counts are highest.

KEEP INDOOR AIR CLEAN

There’s no miracle product that can eliminate all allergens from the air in your home, but these suggestions may help: • Use the air conditioning in your house and car. • If you have forced air heating or air conditioning in your house, use high-efficiency filters and follow regular maintenance schedules. • Keep indoor air dry with a dehumidifier. • Use a portable high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter in your bedroom.

Clean floors often with a vacuum cleaner that has a HEPA filter.

TRY AN OVER-THE-COUNTER REMEDY

Several types of nonprescription medications can help ease allergy symptoms. They include: • Oral antihistamines. Antihistamines can help relieve sneezing, itching, a runny nose and watery eyes. Examples of oral antihistamines include loratadine (Claritin, Alavert), cetirizine (Zyrtec Allergy) and fexofenadine (Allegra Allergy). • Decongestants. Oral decongestants such as pseudoephedrine (Sudafed, Afrinol, others) can provide temporary relief from nasal stuffiness. Decongestants also come in nasal sprays, such as oxymetazoline (Afrin) and phenylephrine (Neo-Synephrine). Only use nasal decongestants for a few days in a row. Longer-term use of decongestant nasal sprays can actually worsen symptoms (rebound congestion). • Nasal spray. Cromolyn sodium nasal spray can ease allergy symptoms and doesn’t have serious side effects, though it’s most effective when you begin using it before your symptoms. Immunotherapy Allergy shots are sometimes necessary if allergy symptoms are worse SLIT. Sub Lingual Immunotherapy with Grastek or oral air as per your Allergist advice. See your Healthcare Provider before use of any medication. Dr. Pargat Singh Bhurji

OUR TONGUE Mirror of our Body

A

yurveda –An ancient Science has drawn a wonderful picture of Human body. Our body speaks about our body problems, but we have to understand it. Today I am talking about our tongue. Our tongue is not just an organ of taste, it’s a tool of diagnosis. Along with pulse, nails, skin and face analysis tongue diagnosis is an ancient proven process to do health check of human body. Tongue is called a mirror of our inner system. Our tongue never lies and clearly indicates if your body is accumulating toxins, food is indigested or any indication of disorders. Vata dosha condition can normally observe at the back of the tongue associated with the state of the colon. Pitta dosha condition can

observe in the middle portion of the tongue associated with the stomach and small Intestines. The sides of the tongue relate to the liver and many pitta imbalances can see here. Kapha dosha condition can observe in the front portion associated with the lungs, chest and heart. Tongue helps to diagnose how harmonized the dosha is or whether it is out of balance. Divide the tongue into three parts (33.3% each); the inner part near throat is vata, middle is pitta, and the outer tip is kapha. Excessive tongue coating in any of these specific areas shows imbalance of that dosha. Tongue should be pink in color and not pale or red. This color should be consistent

throughout your tongue. Our tongue consists of small cylindrical bodies called the taste buds. These taste buds situated on your tongue must be easily visible. Tongue should neither be very dry nor too wet. There shall not be any cracks in it. It should be smooth and must possess a very thin coat of mucus lining it. It is normal and a must. If you see a Whitish coating, that is a sign of ama, which means there are toxins in the digestive system. We can get ama for a number of reasons, but mainly because we have weak agni. Agni is our digestive fire and there is plenty that we can do during our daily routine to keep agni strong .Think about doing a detox but couldn’t think

such as fluid retention, allergic reaction, obesity, hypothyroidism etc. Swollen tongue may need more investigation and thorough examination. It is very common to see red dots on the surface of your tongue, which represents the heat or Pitta energy in the plasma and blood tissues. The density of red papillae may vary and correlates to the respective organ locations. The condition like high fever, hyper acidity, ulcers, and acidic reaction may cause red inflamed papillae on the top of the tongue. Basically, tongue is a muscular, vascular organ. The normal color of the tongue is red-pinkish. If the tongue is pale in color, it is a typical sign of low red blood cells, poor circulation or possibly anemia. This may happen due to low hemoglobin, excessive blood loss, Iron/B12 deficiency, parasitic infection, or side effects of some drugs. Looking into the heart area of the tongue, if you find hollowness or scooping, it is an indicator of emotional imbalance like sadness, grief, or depression in the heart. This may stay longer and remain chronically, which can be known by the depth and prominence of the marks.

of a strong enough incentive. In this case your colon is full of material that doesn’t belong there, that spreads toxins into your blood, makes you sluggish, your skin greyish and your head foggy might be the push you were waiting for. Take a break from heavy, oily and processed foods. Beside whitish tongue Redness, indicates that there is too much heat in the body. This redness suggests that digestion might be TOO hot, therefore burning the food before it gets absorbed to become nutrients. Cracks on the tongue, means a vata derrangement. This could be due to dehydration or not enough oils in the diet.

TREMBLING TONGUE – A SIGN OF ANXIETY OR FEAR, possible Vata disturbance. We live in such a high stress

society that anxiety can crawl over you without you even being aware of it. It might even be your permanent state and you are so used to it that can’t tell the difference. Forgot when was the last time you woke up rested and excited to start your day? Take a break from caffeine and nourish your nervous system with warm, easy to digest light soups and bean dishes.

TEETH MARKS on the side is a sign of ama in the colon and/ or unabsorbed nutrients. Teeth imprints around the contour of the tongue shows malabsorption of nutrients. It means digestive system is not very happy. If the coating is grey, black or brown, you can assume accumulation of Vata toxins and vata imbalance. If the coating is yellow, orange, red, green, it indicates Pitta toxins and pitta Imbalances. If the coating is whitish in color, it is Kapha toxins and correlates to Kapha imbalance. If there is swelling on a tongue is the indicator of inflammation in the body. The location of swelling may varies and correlates to the inflammation of organ on that area. This can also reveal a Kapha imbalance

SKINCARE ROUTINE Women in Their 30s

Y

ou’ve reached the age of thirty! . This is a major life event that will bring forth a lot of changes. It’s been a decade of professional growth, baby shopping, dinners with visitors, and other exciting events. With all of this increased enjoyment comes the realization that whatever worked for your skin in your twenties is unlikely to work today. You may have to deal with fine wrinkles, acne scars, or dark spots because your skin will not repair itself as well as it did in your twenties, but don’t worry! You still have time to take care of your beautiful skin; all it takes is a little effort. Continue reading to learn about the skincare routine of this 30-year-old woman. In your 30s, developing a skincare routine should be part of your daily — and nightly — self-care routine. Here’s a quick primer on the skincare tricks you’ll need to keep your face looking young and firm as you age.

62

THE TIMES OF CANADA JULY 2022

SKINCARE ADVICE

Although I follow a strict skincare regimen, I don’t rely only on cosmetics to keep my skin looking youthful. When it comes to battling wrinkles, Mother Nature is absolutely my ally. Before you start using face cream, do the following three lifestyle adjustments.

SLEEP AND HYDRATION

Water aids your body in a variety of ways, including digestion, circulation, and mood. Add “good skin” to the list as well. Your skin is made up of cells, just like any other organ. Water is required for cell survival and to restore the fluid lost during daily activities. To keep my skin hydrated, I drink 4-8 cups of water every day in addition to using moisturizers. Sleep is important not just for your health but also for your skin. Sleep deprivation causes a reduction in blood flow to the skin around your face, which results in dull skin. Those circles under my eyes did not appear on their own! People who sleep less recover from skin irritations like sunburns and cuts more slowly.

A, C, AND E VITAMINS

Collagen, the major structural protein in your skin, is created and maintained by this trio of vitamins. Collagen tightens and firms your skin, resulting in fewer wrinkles and a more youthful appearance. Vitamin A is abundant in orange-colored vegetables such as carrots and sweet potatoes, which aids in the restoration of damaged collagen. Vitamin E is abundant in dark leafy vegetables like kale and other green produce like avocados and kiwifruit, which helps to slow down the free radicals that create wrinkles. Citrus fruits are abundant in vitamin C, which aids in the healing of bruises and abrasions on the skin.

skin and grime, but it also unclogs pores and prevents acne. So my delicate skin doesn’t grow red and itching, I keep mine almost fragrance-free. Even if you follow a strict nighttime ritual, you may not be able to remove every product from your face. Choose a fragrance-free, natural product that is loaded with vitamins and minerals to help you avoid wrinkles and preserve moisture.

TONER

The toner is the next step. Perhaps you’re unsure what toner is. Before I started my strict skin regimen, I had no idea what it was. Consider toner to be water with antioxidants added to help fight skin diseases and legions (e.g., rosacea). Dead skin cells are removed by toner, resulting in plumper, silkier skin. I use toner shortly after my cleanser to rehydrate my skin because cleansers can sometimes strip away too much moisture. Apply toner once a day after cleansing. I like the rose water ones since they immediately make me feel fresh and elegant!

SERUM

Face serum serves a specific purpose in a certain order. After cleaning and

toning the skin, serum is applied. The time between applying a wash and moisturiser is when your pores are the largest. Serum is the best way to reach deep into your pores and supply nutrients directly to your skin. Even though I don’t need anything too strong to fight wrinkles in my 30s, I use a vitamin C-enriched serum to boost collagen synthesis. Apply serum after toner in the morning and right before bedtime.

CREAM FOR THE DAY

When I reach this point in my process, I concentrate on all the external elements that can harm my skin. UV radiation from the sun is one of the main causes. As a result, a day light cream follows. To protect your skin from the sun’s rays, a day light cream must be lightweight and contain sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 (30 times your skin’s natural UV protection). Look for items that offer UVA/UVB protection. Use day light cream once a day whenever you plan on going out on a sunny day.

SKINCARE ROUTINE AT NIGHT

So, it’s the end of a long day, and you’ve arrived home. It’s time to prepare your skin for plumpness while you sleep! Here’s what you should do before going

SKINCARE ROUTIN IN THE MORNING CLEANSER

I begin each morning with a cleanser. It not only removes make-up and dead

to bed. Serum, tonic, and cleanser Remember how I mentioned that you should cleanse and apply serum twice a day? To begin your evening face routine, start with a cleanser and then a serum. This aids in the removal of makeup and other pollutants accumulated over the day.

EVENING CREAM

to stimulate cell turnover throughout your 30s, and a weekly or biweekly mask can help. However, don’t overdo it, as the chemicals in some masks might irritate your skin. But don’t be concerned! The chemicals are safe as long as you only mask 1-2 times each week. A gentle chemical exfoliation restores the skin’s moisture barrier, making it more capable of

retaining water and keeping your skin moisturized. Peels should only be used once a week. Peels are effective at shrinking pores and removing dead skin and debris. That means you’ll be ready to take on the rest of the week. – By Ramandeep Kaur

I use a night cream after I’ve removed all of your makeup and applied a cleanser and serum. A night cream can assist with diffused redness, broken capillaries, bigger pores, and loose skin, all of which appear in your 30s after long days in the sun. A day cream can assist to avoid new blemishes, while a night cream can help to heal them. To boost collagen formation while you sleep, look for a lotion that contains antioxidants, glycerin, hylaurin acid, fatty acids, and retinol. Once a night, apply night cream.

SKINCARE ROUTINE ONCE A WEEK PEELS AND MASKS

These two operatives may speak and look alike, but their missions are very different. Both are designed to revitalize your skin by covering your complete face. How do they differ, though? Exfoliating masks: I use an exfoliating mask once or twice a week. It’s critical

WEAVING STORIES CARVING NICHE - Harish Masand self discovery is still on. Though a full-time banker, he continues to serve the community by promoting the heritage of Indian art, culture and language in his spare time. Hindi Literary Society of Canada B.C. released his first book in Surrey in 2017, a collection of short stories titled Harf Adhure meaning Incomplete Words. He received many accolades for his style of writing, language and choice of words, but more importantly for writing and promoting Hindi language while living in Canada. The release was widely covered by local media. Soon Harish was invited by HLSOC to become its member, then a director and now has been appointed as the President of this prestigious Society promoting South Asian Language and Literature amongst the Indian diaspora in North America.

E

xpressing himself through different art forms has been Harish’s endeavor for three decades. He carved his niche as a bilingual broadcaster at All India Radio Delhi in early 1990s. Soon it led him to becoming a voice artist for dramas and plays. With expertise in diction, tone and dialogue delivery, doors opened in the world of stage and theatre. Three years with Barry John’s IMAGO theatre group in Delhi polished his acting skills, but under the wings of this maestro Harish

realized his strength lay in writing and storytelling. Masters in English Literature and passion for Hindi language gave him the freedom to express himself in both languages, and thus a writer was born. He has been writing poetry, plays and short stories since then and continues to do so till date. His poems have been part of many anthologies published all over the world. Harish migrated to Canada about a decade ago, but his journey of

Recently Harish wrote the screenplay, produced and directed his first short film The Lounge being showcased and receiving accolades in International Film Festivals across the globe. Made under the banner of Masand Productions, this film has won 14 international awards & nominations. His profile on FilmFreeway with winning Laurels as a screenplay writer and director has been noticed and he has been offered to work with ‘Lonely Wolf International Films’ in England. During his visit

66

THE TIMES OF CANADA JULY 2022

to India last month, Harish was also approached by Mr. Prakash Bhardwaj from Mumbai Film Industry to explore the possibilities of working together. Mr. Bhardwaj has been working with Mr. Aamir Khan for 15 years as his dialogue coach. Mr. Bhardwaj also runs his acting and dialogue training classes in Mumbai. However, Harish prefers to work locally and promote the talent in the lower mainland as he sees a lot of potential here. For the immense success of his maiden film The Lounge, Harish gives full credit to his team and family, especially his wife Anupa Masand who believed in and supported his vision. The movie was shot locally in Surrey with cast & crew from lower mainland

including Jayesh Kodwani, Andy Kalirai, Chhavi Disawar, Melanie Chevrier and Nutan Thakur to name a few. Its success story has already been aired on Red FM and Spice Radio. Harish believes one doesn’t have to create stories, they are all around us, we just need to spot them and weave them in words. This is how he weaved his next story and is now preparing for his second film in Vancouver which is going to address the issue of intercultural integration and the challenges faced by the new immigrants, particularly the youth. There is a great message for the entire community in this film. He is very excited and gearing up for this venture and soon will start auditioning for the roles. DIL DIYAN GALLAN

T

he team behind Dil Diyan Gallan, an initiative to spread awareness about Mental Health in the South Asian community, has been working hard to shift the narrative about mental health. As a community we continue to separate Mental Health from Physical

Health. In doing so, we are not only doing ourselves an injustice, but also an injustice to those currently struggling and needing support. What happens when we separate

The Times of Canada mental and physical health? How does it impact how we care for ourselves and for our loved ones? An example of this separation is shown to us clearly on how we care for our

70

THE TIMES OF CANADA JULY 2022

physical health versus our mental health. Many of us try to incorporate some form of physical activity in our daily/weekly lives. We do this to stay physically fit, to protect ourselves from medical conditions, and to ease some stress. We also know what to eat and what not to eat to be physically healthy. If we are not feeling well physically, we make an appointment with our doctor. If our body hurts we might go for a massage. The point is, is that we have an arsenal of weapons to fight physical ailments and we have a tool kit of tools to support our physical wellbeing.

health, I asked her a question, “You go for a walk five times a week to keep your physical health in check. You have been doing this for at least 10 years. Without any physical issues, you take care of your body. Why is it that we can take care of our physical health daily without questioning it but cannot do the same for our mental health? Why do we believe that if someone is seeing a counsellor there must be something wrong with them? Counselling is a tool in the mental health tool kit, just like walking is a tool in the physical health tool kit.”

Do we have that same daily commitment when it comes to our mental health? Do we have an arsenal to fight mental/emotional ailments or a tool kit to help our mental wellbeing? For the majority of people, the answer is ‘no’.

As a society, we have made it normal to take care of our physical health daily, but we tend to mostly take care of our mental health when something is ‘wrong’. If we don’t make it a daily practice to, at the very least, acknowledge our mental/emotional state daily, then when we are faced with a mental health issue, we will not have the awareness or the tolerance to deal with what is going on. This also extends to supporting someone else and accepting that mental health is a daily, moment to moment, part of our existence. When we know this, we can be there for others, knowing that the individual will be needing support for duration of time, not just for one day.

Recently, a counselling client that I have been seeing for 5 years, asked me a question “Raman, is it normal or okay that we still see each other?” Now, when we first saw one another it was weekly, my client was dealing with a crisis in her life. Then we saw each other bi-weekly, then once a month, and now we meet every 3-4 months. Now this client understands mental health, she works in the field, yet, she was not sure if continuing to see a counsellor was okay or normal. Knowing how she cares for her physical

The Dil Diyan Gallan team continues to put out weekly videos on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram in the hopes to shift this narrative towards looking at

mental health as a part of our overall health, as a part of our daily wellbeing. The team has held an awareness promoting event at Payal Business Centre; it is on our local radio stations, our local TV networks, volunteering with seniors, Church groups, all in the hopes to BREAK THE STIGMA and CHANGE THE NARRATIVE. Our team urges individuals to ask themselves, “What is my relationship with my mental health? Do I have a tool kit for my mental wellbeing? Do I have a safe space to explore my mental health? And am I able to offer others a safe space to explore their mental health on a regular basis?” The reality is, until we each see mental health and physical health as a part of our daily wellbeing, we cannot provide a

TRAVEL TO GAIN LIFE EXPERIENCES

L

ife is all about having adventures. And, unlike material possessions, experiences follow us wherever we go. Every day, we confront the difficulty of figuring out how to make the most of our life experiences. We like to assign a monetary value to the

things we pursue as humans. We want to believe that what we’re doing is meaningful. This purpose is critical to our well-being since we learn and grow from our life experiences. Pursuing our passions teaches us essential lessons about ourselves and the world.

What could be better than traveling? Traveling is a unique experience because it allows you to disconnect from the stresses of everyday life. It allows us to forget about our domestic issues, frustrations, and concerns. We encounter life in a variety of ways

72

THE TIMES OF CANADA JULY 2022

while we may appear to be different, we share many commonalities as humans. Despite our differences in appearance, we have the same ambitions and dreams. All cultures adore their children, are proud of their heritage, and strive to enhance their families’ living conditions. We are brought together by our similarities. Traveling allows us to appreciate diversity while also urging us to be more accepting of one another.

TRAVELING CHALLENGES OUR BELIEFS AND VALUES IN LIFE – Your viewpoint on life will never be

challenged if you spend your entire life staying at home in your familiar surroundings. You’ll never be able to compare your home experiences to those of others outside of your little group of friends and family.

throughout our journey. We go to new locations and learn about new cultures, cuisines, traditions, and ways of life. We could never have these experiences at home. This is why travel is such a special and priceless life experience. Furthermore, there are other advantages to traveling, including enhanced health and the acquisition of new skills. We gain more significance in our life as we learn and profit from travel.

TRAVELING GIVES US A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD – It is difficult to truly

know the world if you spend your entire life in your hometown or country. You will never have the opportunity to learn about the difficulties, celebrations, and traditions of other countries. Every country has its own distinct characteristics. Dialects, cuisine, music, religion, and traditions are all different. Exposure to these distinct cultures encourages us to become more open-minded and recognize that,

Traveling allows us to see how people live in different parts of the world. We learn about their priorities and how people think about things like family, employment, education, the environment, and so on. This may cause us to reconsider our own ideas and opinions about how to spend our lives. Traveling will expand our horizons and expose us to new opportunities. As a result, traveling is a fantastic learning opportunity. It’s up to you to figure out how to implement what you’ve learned in your own life. The skills you get while traveling will benefit you for the rest of your life, whether you are learning a new language, doing new activities, developing new passions, or simply becoming more confident as a person.

of traveling. It is through sharing our travel experiences with others that it becomes a more fulfilling life experience. Meeting new individuals is quite easy when traveling. Whether we’re in a hotel bar or on an expedition, we’re constantly surrounded by other people. Food, new places, music, and culture are all great ways for us to connect. We generally share similar interests and values, which make communication, go more smoothly. Even if we only met someone for a few days, the bond and memories we form with them can last a lifetime. These ties are more vital than ever in our globalized environment. They may provide us with fresh opportunities in the future.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT IS ENHANCED BY TRAVEL–

Traveling frequently requires us to leave our comfort zones and try new things. These new encounters are unique to our everyday routines and assist us in personal development. Each voyage presents its own set of problems and challenges to overcome. When traveling alone, for example, you may be forced to become more responsible and independent. You will learn about your own strengths, weaknesses, likes, dislikes, and other characteristics by coping with various scenarios. Self-awareness is essential for personal development and realizing who you truly are.

PREDICTIONS 2022 JULY / AUGUST / SEPTEMBER

ARIES: This time is all about dusting yourself off and getting back into life’s ring. If you’ve felt jaded by life recently, the months of July, August and September are going to bring

redemption to any parts of your heart that you’re ready to mend. Use this time to release old belief systems and finally see the world as a blank canvas. Start by dedicating yourself to passion projects and people who light your soul on fire. You may start to find that it’s

easier to spend your time alone than surrounded by the wrong company. That realization alone will make you realize how special the people who you do align with are. Do not take your life for granted any longer. You are on the right path, but gratitude will get you to

76

THE TIMES OF CANADA JULY 2022

your goals much more quickly, Aries.

TAURUS: The months of July, August and September are sure to be a transformative time, Taurus. If you’ve been sitting in the background of your own life, this will be the time when your position finally changes and you start to see yourself as the main character that you always have been! Expect the unexpected when it comes to love, whether this is a surprise upgrade or completion of your existing relationship. And for my single Taurus friends, you will be pleasantly surprised with the options you’ll have in the time ahead. There is nothing that can get in your way, besides yourself. So step out of self-doubt and start to truly believe in the power you hold. Then, and only then, will you see your life transform from stagnant to stellar. GEMINI: This time will ask you to create a new level of stability and balance in your life. Try to invite yourself to find comfort in the quiet. You could be slowing down on travel, responsibilities, obligatory relationships, and chaos into a much simpler lifestyle. Your nervous system will surely thank you! When it comes to love, make sure you’re investing in the right people for the right reasons. Don’t keep someone around just to fill a void. Instead, get comfortable with your own company—whether you’re in a relationship or not. A healthy partner will admire your dedication to yourself, so make this a top priority during this time. I see retreats, meditation, and emotional support systems through community and therapeutic techniques. Don’t give up on the life you see for yourself. CANCER: Cancers, this time is going to be full of social events and opportunities for you to connect deeply

with others. Make sure that you’re taking proper care of your mental and emotional health along the way and that you’re giving yourself permission to intertwine rest into your daily experience, rather than waiting until you’re burnt out! For my single Cancers, this time illuminates a clear path to connect with a soulmate. Ask yourself whether you’re looking for noncommittal fun or dedication and longevity. Either path is yours once you choose what works best for you! There is no right or wrong answer, simply an authentic choice. Set yourself free of mental rigidity during these months.

LEO: Dearest Leos, what a time to be alive! This time is sure to be full of joy and celebration for you—and you are reliably ready to soak up life’s pleasures. You are sure to be surrounded by love, success, and good fortune this time. But your task will be to find the gray space— somewhere between being swept up by difficult moments or disengaging all together. Your love life will prosper if you can dedicate rather than run; if you’re single, this will be the time to find a lion or lioness that can rule the animal kingdom alongside you. If you’re already coupled, expect some surprises in your love story. Let go of the timeline you had for how your life was “meant” to plan out, and start to see the beauty in life’s uncontrollable unfolding. You will benefit most in the moments when you choose to surrender. VIRGO: This time is about to be a time of deep transformational change, Virgo. No more self-doubt—you are ready for this! Expect your limitations to be lifted as life takes you higher and asks you to expand now more than ever. Whether you’ve been stagnant in love, professional life, finances, your living space, or your friend circle—discontent will be a

thing of the past. You are about to be blessed with expansion and ascension, and I see many of you stepping into the limelight with your career. There will be an opening for you to bring your passion projects to life. Start to get comfortable with your wants and needs by setting strong boundaries around your precious time, and ultimately start to view your energetic well-being as a top priority. Whether you are single or currently coupled, stand by for a leveling-up in your love life as well.

LIBRA: My dearest Libra, this time for you will be a time of releasing guilt, shame, and self-deprecation. You are finally in a place where you can see how much of an obstacle your nagging thoughts can be, and will finally be ready to leave this behavior in the past. Treat this time as an opportunity for you to get to know yourself on a deeper and more intimate level than ever before. Start to become comfortable with journaling, or maybe try out mirror work just like telling yourself how beautiful and special you are as you get ready in the morning. Allow your fear of loving yourself to dissolve. You are more than your outer shell, and you will start to discover parts of yourself that had remained unseen this time. There is no limit to how lovely your life can be, and once you allow yourself to enjoy your own existence, every other aspect of your life will begin to flourish. SCORPIO: Scorpios, this time you are about to embark on a journey that wipes away all of the pain and misfortune that you’ve dealt with in the past. I sense that there are ex-lovers and old friends who need their access to your energy revoked. You cannot expect people to treat you differently from the way you allow them to. This will be a time of raising your cost of admission. I see a career upheaval happening for you this time that will

change your life and lifestyle! Do not settle for less than what you deserve. You may also enter into a partnership with someone who assists you in building your business and confidence. This is the bare minimum for you now as you continue to rise. Remember, if you have to perform for someone to see your worth, they were never worthy of your light to begin with.

SAGITTARIUS: This time is arriving for you to embrace rest and relaxation. Your spirit has been calling out to you for a while to revisit your childhood dreams and desires. You were never meant to be a cog in the machine, and this will be the time for you to step outside of your daily routine and find new ways of enjoying the life that you’ve been gifted. Your love life is about to become mellow in a truly beautiful way. If you can find more work-life balance, your personal relationships will begin to thrive. Stay present to the ones you love while you have time with them. When you make an effort to sit in gratitude each day that you wake up and have a new chance, the universe will bless you for your thankful approach. I see a lot of you working smarter, not harder— actually earning more and laboring less. Believe in that reality, it’s already happening! CAPRICORN: My dear sea goats, this is the time for you to trigger a moment of release. You may have been caught up

in grief, resentment, or grudges for things that happened in the past. I see you gaining new perspective on your life this time and taking yourself off the hamster wheel of feeling, thinking, and behaving in the same ways you have for times. If you are willing to take accountability to how you’ve held yourself back from receiving the blessings that you desire, you will be gifted with good fortune beyond your wildest dreams. Start to step outside your comfort zone. For some of you I see performance. Expect your collaborations and close relationships to bloom during this time from your newfound openheartedness.

AQUARIUS: My unique and curious Aquarians, this time is going to be filled with opportunities for you to change the narrative that other people have about the meaning of life. If you are able to reflect and share your experiences with empowerment, you can expect to turn your mess into your message during the months of July, August and September. Expect this to expand in the New Time, welcoming even more pure-hearted people into your heart. There are soul connections you have yet to make, and memories you’ve yet to experience. Don’t get too caught up in where you are with your career, your love life, and your personal progression. Use the pressure to turn your life into a diamondencrusted masterpiece.

PISCES: Pisces, you are about to embark on a journey of selfdiscovery, and rather than finding the answer in rigid study and selfhelp books, you are waking up to the lessons found in moments of joy. You will find many opportunities this time to remind yourself of how far you have come. I encourage you to stay wildly optimistic about where you are headed. I see an opportunity for sweet and pure-natured love arriving to you. And for my already coupled Pisces, start to take opportunities to be more open and honest with your current partner. Let yourself step into true vulnerability this time to remind yourself: You are safe to open up to life and all of its endless possibilities! Opening your heart will lead you to joy and success that at one point you could have only ever dreamed of. Obtaining & Maintenance of

NATIONAL SAFETY CODE (NSC)

T

rucking is a vast industry that covers the whole world. Trucking has become an integral part of our daily lives. Every country has developed rules and regulations regarding the safety of the trucking companies. In Canada, every province has its own regulations for the trucking industry. The company owners must follow all those regulations for the

safety of their employees and the public. In British Columbia, everyday hundreds of people apply for the National Safety Code to start their new trucking business. Obtaining the safety certificate is getting harder as all the applicants must write a test to show their knowledge about the rules and regulations of the National Safety Code. They must put together a safety plan for their drivers even before applying for their National Safety Code. Passing the NSC Knowledge Test means you know all the regulations and requirements to start a trucking

business. Many times, it has been seen that the company owners just pay attention to develop their business. They may forget about the safety of their employees. They may not follow the regulations and ignore the requirements mentioned in the Motor Vehicle Act. Trucking companies often forget that NSC is always watching them. When a company’s safety performance rating on the road goes up, a letter of audit/ compliance review gets sent out by the NSC office. Upon compliance review of the log books, truck/driver files, the Director of NSC decides how compliant the company is and if it is safe for its trucks and drivers to be on the road. This means the Director can suspend or cancel the Safety Certificate. A safety consultant can surely help to avoid this situation. Getting a consultant’s help from the beginning not only prevents the company from getting audited for non-compliance but it also saves you time and money.
