However, what makes the architecturally stimulating pool at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas so special isn’t that it is currently one of THE places to be seen, nor is it that it is not only one of the few pools that overlooks The Strip but that it feverishly embodies one of design trends that theTwentySIX’s thinks will take over 2014. www.CosmopolitanLasVegas.com

Meet Andie Day. Don’t let her demure stature and polite Bostonian accent fool you. The blonde bombshell is the powerhouse behind Newport Beach based SHIFT Legacy, a personal services firm catering to the high profile male navigating the tumultous process of divorce.

WHO

Men, especially men in elevated positions – C-Level executives, celebrities, high-net worth individuals – often find themselves in uncharted territory when it comes to transitioning from married life to that of the bachelor. At the helm of SHIFT Legacy, Day couples her personal experience with divorce (she, herself is a divorcée) with her professional expertise as a well regarded interior designer, developing personalized strategies that allow the newly single male to move forward with maximum efficiency and a focus on the critical concerns that matter most – family, health & career. Because the process of divorce is ultimately disruptive and can quickly consume even the most level headed of men, SHIFT Legacy’s primary focus is an all-encompassing approach, providing services beyond interior design. To these gentlemen, residential procurement, moving logistics, scheduling arrangements with children, image consulting, and personal shopping are all but some of the services Day brings to the table, giving him the ultimate step up in beginning a new stage in his life.

ANDIE DAY shift legacy

“SHIFT Legacy clients are hardwired for achievement and are consistently engineering their legacy.” says Day adding “They’re gentleman that invest their time and money wisely and they value services that optimize both.” SHIFT aims to help bridge the gap between life before and after divorce, ensuring that the legacy a divorcing professional male leaves behind remains intact, or instead, a more improved version than he had originally anticipated. It’s been said that behind every great man there is a greater woman. It might just be Andie. www.ShiftLegacy.com

y husband and I are celebrating our 20th anniversary this year. When I married him, I married into a lot of great stuff. Two rescue dogs, a few fancy cars, a condo in Aspen and Marilyn. As a child of the 80’s, I was familiar with the image but I always thought the Warhol was some kind Aaron Brothers Art Mart poster. Even after he explained to me that she wasn’t, it still failed to sink in. The Ferrari I could understand but rare artwork, no. My husband is nearly 20 years my elder. He explained to me that he had purchased her with the intention of selling her

The Marilyn was framed beautifully and hung in our bedroom. I eventually read up on Andy Warhol and dived into the contemporary art market. I did learn to appreciate the face I woke up to every morning. I was proud of her and would show her off to anyone that ventured upstairs but I never really had the love affair that my husband had with her. Our home is decorated very French country and she simply stuck out like a sore thumb. A few years ago, we redecorated our bedroom and nothing we chose matched Marilyn.

The date of the auction approached and we would banter about how awesome it would be if someone really cool purchased her. I romanticized a big bidding war like the scene in “Sex and The City” when Samantha is bidding against a phone bidder who turns out to be her model turned boyfriend for a ring she knew she had to have. But instead, the bidding war would be over our Marilyn. From a friend, rumors circulated that Howard Stern was in the market for a Warhol. She demanded I call him and tell him to buy Marilyn. In the end I didn’t make the call but I may or may not have sent him a few tweets with a link to the auction.

“Don’t worry,” he reassured, “We’ll sell her soon.” Marilyn sold in the end for a conservative price. There was no bidding war and I did bless my husband with one fabulous child who, by the way, had no love for Marilyn and this past fall she was admitted to a college on the east coast. going to sell Marilyn. “No”, I said, “you love her, we don’t have to.” I went back to what I was doing but thought to myself, “Are you crazy? Sell her!” I called down to him and told him that we should sell Marilyn. I was promptly put in

A long story made shorter, it was decided that Sotheby’s would auction her off in the fall. The day came to deliver Marilyn to the auction house. He helped me load her into the back of my car to deliver her to Sotheby’s in Los Angeles. This was the hardest part. He shed a tear as the trunk closed on Marilyn. I don’t think I’ve ever driven so slow to Los Angeles, one eye focused on the rear view mirror hoping that I wasn’t going to get hit from the back and squash her.

price on my own later that day. The email from Sotheby’s didn’t even arrive until three days later. We still haven’t received the check. It was all very un her, no real feelings either way. The space on our wall where Marilyn hung is now empty. We are traveling to San Francisco later this month and visiting one of our favorite galleries where I’ve decided I will let my husband choose something else to hang there. Only this time, whatever we choose will match the wallpaper.

Lot No. 373, Marilyn, sold during Sotheby’s Print Auction on November 1st, 2013 within her $80,000 - $120,000 estimate. We at theTwentySIX are still waiting to see what will replace her that matches the wallpaper in the author’s home.

Dassault’s state-of-the-art Falcon 5X, a long-range large-cabin business jet, is the French firm’s first clean sheet design in a decade. From nose to tail everything about the new airplane has been designed with comfort, safety, and efficiency in mind. When it begins flying in 2015 the 5X’s wood and leather-trimmed cabin will be the tallest of any purpose-built business jet—and among the widest. 28 windows—the largest ever in a Falcon jet—will bathe the 16-passenger cabin in natural light. And, in an industry first, Dassault’s engineers

have even included a skylight. New technology inside will keep passengers comfortable and connected while outside a pair of ultraefficient Safran Snecma Silvercrest engines propel the 5X from Los Angeles to London nonstop while burning half the fuel required of comparable aircraft. Starting with a blank slate has given Dassault freedom to infuse the new jet’s design with a host of innovations that will likely position the 5X as the first in a new family of Falcons. - Eric Schwartz

OAK ALLEY PLANTATION

New Orleans is New Orleans. Don’t get us wrong, we’re all for a little Bourbon Street action from time to time. But sometimes one just needs to get away from it all. Oak Alley Plantation, located just an hour west of NOLA, is about “away from it all” as you can get. Named for the 300 year old oak trees lining the alley from the Mississippi River bank leading to the entrance of the antebellum edifice, the 1837 residence stands as a quiet testament to a much different time. Moments of meditative peace can be found during a stroll round the expansive property. Or for the curious, tours of the mansion’s preserved interiors are led by Southern belles in hoop skirts and finish (or begin) with a mint julep on the lower porch. Also on site - the recreation of a civil war encampment and six reconstructed slave quarters. www.OakAlleyPlantation.com

ON THE

CUTTING EDGE The American Barbershop returns as a cult classic for gentlemen who desire an establishment catering to their aesthetic needs without the feminine undertones. The era of the Straight Razor has returned in full force. by Aubry Brown photography by Brandon Smith

theTWENTYSIX

41

IN A ONCE BYGONE ERA, the average gentleman would make a pilgrimage to his local barber. The experience was two fold. It was an opportunity to converse with other male patrons about the weather, sports, and otherwise inappropriate topics - like politics and mistresses - but also to be properly groomed, receiving his ten-cent straight razor shave or

As the economy shifted at the turn of the century and man’s expected roles in the workplace turned to longer hours and even longer commutes, so did the role his barber played in his grooming habits. WWI saw the replacement of the straight blade with the safety razor, allowing men to conveniently shave at home. Trips to the barber were less frequent and discount chains offering a less expensive haircut popped up across the United States. Though the days of the ten-cent shave have all since passed, the sentiment of the well-groomed male has not. Inspired by the metrosexual movement, a man’s personal style became more important, telling his story and making an impression on the world around him. Pride in he worked for a large corporation or as a self-employed entrepreneur.

Ready to go under the blade? Here, theTwentySIX has picked a few who we’d trust to hold a straight razor to our neck.

42

theTWENTYSIX

,” quips Bradford Crowder, Uncle Beefy to his followers, “We’re understanding that taking care of our appearance isn’t a compromise to our manliness but an enhancement. And, in my book, a straight razor shave is a damn sight better than hunting camo any day.” Growing bored of the stale atmosphere of unisex chain shops, with their white walls and devoid of personalized services, men found themselves at full service salons geared to women, ultimately paying lavish prices for a stylist to give them a cut that suited their desired look. The average guy quietly longed for a place to call his own to be groomed without the presence of his female companion. The result? The return of the American barbershop. As demand grows and more men discover the luxury of a proper shave, locally operated shops staffed with classically trained barbers are enjoying a resurgence. Recognizing the need to preserve the traditional barbershop, New Orleans establishment Aiden Gill paired dark stained-wood paneled walls and the sexy masculinity of a men’s social club with a shot of Scotch whiskey and a menu of luxe grooming services crafted especially for the dapper gent. Vintage display cases showcase antique implements and a host of memorabilia celebrating the era of the barber. Stepping through the doors of Aiden Gill is evidence that time travel does exist.

the modern barbershop breaks the rules, pairing male-centric pampering services with bars, lounges, and even food, providing experiential environments without the feminine fuss. With a devoted clientele of actors, businessmen and the average Joe, Blind Barber’s Los Angeles haunt doubles as a craft cocktail bar and an urban foodie heaven featuring an extensive grilled cheese menu. The undeniable proof of the need for establishments dedicated to male-centric luxury services is in their two-week waiting list and blocklong line to enter the bar. “It has a lot of personality, like our clients. It’s all about service, diversity, and often talk therapy!” Blind Barber’s shop chief Ryan Rich, adding that “What we do is an art form, we have a passion for it”. In case you were curious as to just how passionate Rich is, look just ahead of his right ear during the customary 10 to 15 tattooed a pair of scissors. A newcomer to the scene, San Diego’s Mister Brown’s, undertook a four month renovation at the hands of Lee Brown, an alum of Blind Barber’s New York location. The resulting atmosphere with its open beam ceiling and exposed brick walls

can easily be described as the epitome of the contemporary man-lair (editor’s note: we prefer mantuary). Refurbished Koken barber chairs mingle effortlessly with a billiard table and handcrafted bar. Designed as a private event space with an innovative luxe mass appeal, Mister Brown’s aims to cater to the bachelor party crowd. A place where a groom and his trusty sidekicks can enjoy a cocktail, cigar, and shave the night before the rest of his life. Mister Brown’s offers a small kitchen for catering and dressing room for events of this magnitude. “It isn’t about cost or about effectiveness…. It’s about pampering” says Mister Brown’s barber Travis Williams, “No guy is going to get a facial but they will get a shave. It’s (a straight razor shave) something every guy should get at least once.” The new American barbershop has become the ultimate in luxury services for men. Whether the traditional locale or the contemporary scene, they serve the fortunate man and the simpleton alike, men who take pride in their outward appearance, have a palpable sense of personal style, and an appreciation for the tradition of barbering. And guys who brave the fear of another man weilding a very sharp instrument just millimeters from the sensitive parts of his face think it’s a pretty cool tradition.

Jerome, Arizona

Once the 4th largest city in Arizona, this little town of 450 is now a bustling artist’s community situated on a pirch well above the desert floor. A true ghost town by today’s standards, its mountainside location brings not only sweeping views of Arizona but has also resulted in a number of buildings sliding down the 30 degree slope. Be wary of narrow streets, however, which are better suited for the motorcycles that frequent this charming location. Make sure to stop at the Jerome Hotel to see the owner’s vintage Rolls Royce.

Amboy, California

Not much remains of Amboy, an all but forgotten watering hole on California’s Route 66. A post office. The vestiges of a roadside motel. Roy’s Café. During the day the effervescent colors and Googie styling of its towering neon sign stand guard with an ever watchful eye on the road coming and going. At night, tubes of gas transform it into a beacon, rays stretching miles across the desert valley. One must stop and pay their respects to this landmark, praying to the gods of the road for safe travels.

I love and live for color in homes. I have a very hard time with clients who want a neutral interior. I’ll do it if pressed, but I don’t believe in it. I think it’s unhealthy and shows a huge lack of imagination and a vast amount of fear: fear of making a mistake, fear of what other people will think or say, fear that it grow tiresome in time… none of which I’m overly concerned with. Everything goes out of style eventually, even neutrals. People respond to color emotionally and physiologically. That is a proven fact. So therefore it’s like Viagra for the senses, whereas neutral interiors are like a steady diet of sedatives….

Each and every year designers from all walks of life – interior, industrial, automotive, fashion – are faced with the enormous task of weeding through hundreds of fads in order to determine the next best trend. It’s an arduous task and the result is that they quite often find themselves resting on their laurels, regurgitating the same design thematic over and over again until finally screaming “uncle” and throwing out the last of the carbon filament bulbs hoping never to see them again. The end of 2013 and approach of 2014 has brought about another slew of design motifs – some of them brilliant in concept and rendition, others, horrible representations. Here, theTwentySIX presents the five themes for 2014 worth of being called a true design trend – an Element of Warmth, Ombré, the Return to Delft, Multi-Faceted Design, and the Hexagon. It was a cold, snowy day when this trend hit like a gust of frigid air. Embodying one of man’s essential needs, The Element of Warmth, first saw it’s coming through the growing popularity of felt as a manipulatable luxury material. Appearing on everything from high-end modern furniture to accessories cases to lighting, felt came on strong early 2013 giving way for the rise of knit – crochet, cable knit, and macramé – easily a personal favorite of our editors. Of course, the true definition of luxury revolves around a bit of extravagance and the need for the unnecessary bringing fur back to forefront of the marketplace. We like to think it was hindsight that brought designers back to one of the original natural materials, especially considering early 2014 has been wrought with extreme temperature changes nationwide. Though cowhides and shearlings are easily the most popular fur in use today, the design community is throwing caution to the wind, ripping off the Scarlett letter, and working with everything from fox to mink to coyote, producing wares embodying a true element of warmth. the TWENTYSIX

Design trends tend to follow a fairly similar pattern. Someone somewhere, notably in a farmhouse in the middle of Iowa, applies said trend to an object before said object catches the eye of an aficionado from one of the few worldwide design hubs where it then appears in or on major collections before burning out again after being the center of every feature, blog post, and advertising campaign. Ombré seems to be one of those trends that has, in a round about way, defied the normal chain of events, becoming a breakthrough pattern on it’s own, especially in the DIY environment. A quick glance ‘round Pinterest is evidence that Ombré, just a fancy way of saying Gradient, has come up through - 2 0 1 4 grassroots campaigns simply because it’s something that can easily be replicated at home with little more than a babysitter, a washtub, and ink or paint. Only now has the use of the gradient in everything from fashion to furniture to, dare I say it, custom automotive paint jobs, become forefront, after “the little people” have claimed it as their own. We almost hate to say it, but Ombré is The People’s Pattern.

The Hexagon is both steeped in tradition and yet surprisingly avant-garde.

The Chevron is dead. There, theTwentySIX said it. Blame it on the economy or blame it on our manners (it’s not polite to point). Designers in all fields have always enjoyed quick flings with geometrics.. It’s the reason the Chevron rushed to Super Nova status in the world of aesthetics mid 2012 before coming to a crashing halt at the end of 2013 making way for a new shape to come around. That shape, the 2014 shape of the year, is the Hexagon. At once, the Hexagon is both steeped in tradition, rooted in a turn of the 20th century industrial revolution mentality and yet surprisingly avant-garde having experienced a re-emergence in - 2 0 1 4 - the mid-century (the evidence plastered on every tile fireplace surround in Palm Springs), and once again in all facets of industrial design from furniture and tile to the air dam of the uber sexy Lamborghini Aventador. How long the Hexagon remains a force before giving way to yet another overused shape of the century begs to be seen but one thing is for sure, consumers like having enough sides to keep from being square but just enough to keep from being told to stop on a constant basis. Apparently, six has become the golden number.

The use of pattern in modern design aesthetics tends to follow an ebb and flow that parallels the economic trends. As the financial marketplace finds itself in a decline, no different than that of the last four or five years, pattern either becomes more primitive and geometric or disappears altogether. But in times of economic prosperity, we like to throw balls to the wall and bring back ornament. Toile was first but now the blue and white floral patterns of Delftware is making a resurgence. A prominent statement first on the runway in the collections of Dior, Valentino, and Caroline Herrera, product designers are making bold use of this otherwise traditional pattern to instill a bit of the “over the top in otherwise simple environments. History Lesson: Delft as we have come to know it got its big break in - 2 0 1 4 porcelain around the 17th century and was actually inspired by the blue and white porcelain the Dutch East India Companybrought back from China. Royal Delft (or Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles) is the last remaining original Delftware factory, having been in active production for more than 350 years.

Marilyn Monroe once sang that diamonds were a girl’s best friend. In a way, she was right – they’re sparkly and certainly don’t talk back. Apparently, however, they’ve become the friend of choice for the design community, too. Beginning with the automotive industry, the trend for multi-faceted surfaces sped into the foreground with automakers Lamborghini & Cadillac brilliantly carving metal bodies into abstract works of geometric art. Via Computer Aided Technology, simple surfaces could be transformed into something modern yet fit for the Stone Age. Yabba Dabba Do. Furniture, such as Boca Do Lobo’s - 2 0 1 4 - Diamond Sideboard, electronics, pottery, and lighting have come quick to market with rock solid examples. Even the fashion world has taken to faceted design, examples of highly technical pleating gracing the runways. Of course, the trick in using multifaceted surfaces well is in creating products which at once appear being solid yet maintain a sense of delicacy so one doesn’t worry their floor joists will hold. Our recent favorite faceted application? The wood textiles used in the creation of Tesler Mendelovitch’s clutches.
