Webb presented its Winter Dance Show on the steps of the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology. The show was entitled Centum in honor of Webb’s Centennial. The show choreographically referenced hallmarks of Webb’s history, mission and unbounded philosophy. Using contemporary dance influence, the show thematically explored the past, present and future, considering the nature of perspective and progress. THE REPORT OF THE SCHOOLS 2021-22 1

From the Head of Schools

As our recent students well know, I begin each school year with a Convocation speech to our community. My goal is to drive excitement for the amazing days to come – about our new and returning teachers and staff and about the extraordinary experiences awaiting students in the classroom and on campus.

2 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

Convocation 2021

In these speeches, I lead our students in a mantra about Webb’s values: Without honor, there can be no trust, without trust there can be no community. Perhaps more than in any other year at Webb, 2021-22 was about community. Our students came together for their first full school year after the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to shut down in March 2020 and deliver a virtual program for 2020-21. During this year of return, we struggled at times. It’s no small task to reconnect with 400 students who have been off campus for nearly a year and a half. Not only were our ninthgraders new to Webb, but in many ways so were our 10th-graders and many 11th-graders. What made the year so amazing was how our students, faculty and staff came together to rebuild Webb’s community, making it stronger than ever. As you know, our faculty and staff are so much more than employees who work an eight-hour shift and head home at night. They work nights and weekends and live alongside the students they mentor. They create a home where our

students feel welcomed for who they are and supported as they pursue their dreams. Webb’s sense of community was expressed in highly tangible ways, including how our health and wellness team supported our students, how our faculty and staff provided engagement, how our students advocated for each other and how our graduating classes celebrated our mission to bring the unmatched Webb experience to new generations of students.

“ In these speeches, I lead our students in a mantra about Webb’s values: Without honor, there can be no trust, without trust there can be no community.”

Indeed, because of the struggles, we found new depths to the remarkable sense of community that so many alumni cherish as Webb’s greatest contribution to their lives. In my 34 years at Webb, many moments stand out as particularly special – bright sparks over the years that capture the essence of the Webb experience. This dedication to community in 2021-22 is among the brightest. Sincerely yours,

Taylor B. Stockdale Head of Schools

Campaign Update

The Next 100: The Centennial Campaign BY BOB FASS, CHIEF ADVANCEMENT OFFICER

On October 23, 2021 Webb officially launched The Next 100: The Centennial Campaign. Our virtual event included a historic announcement that Webb received a future estate gift of at least $100 million from an alumnus, the fifth largest gift to an independent school in U.S. history and the largest west of the Mississippi. With this gift in hand, a campaign goal of $200 million was set, which is four times larger than any previous Webb campaign.

4 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

“ I know from the bottom of my heart, that if I wasn’t at Webb for the past 4 years, I wouldn’t be the same. I have been lucky to walk down such a path that few can, and I hope to make the best of it as I go to university and beyond.” – Jordan G. ’22, Crean Foundation Scholar, Cornell University

The newly renovated Hooper Community Center

At the close of the fiscal year on June 30, 2022, Webb had recorded $182,171,603 representing gifts and commitments made from July 1, 2017 onward. The Centennial Campaign is scheduled to conclude on June 30, 2025. A featured campaign project, Hooper Community Center and Centennial Plaza were a haven for students as we resumed in-person instruction, residential boarding, and campus life activities. In all likelihood, no spaces on campus were used with more regularity than these spaces, made possible by generous philanthropy. Many current students also benefited personally from endowment growth that occurred as a result of giving during the Centennial Campaign. Two realized bequests totaling $9 million were added this year to Webb’s endowment in support of financial aid alongside a new future gift of $3 million. Webb students also benefited from smaller restricted gifts that have an equally profound impact on affordability. Webb’s Fun Fund, Student Activity Fund, and The Webb Experience Fund were all created by donors with a central theme – no student, regardless of the family’s ability to pay the full cost of tuition, should be excluded from a full Webb experience. To that end, students on financial aid also qualify for assistance with personal and incidental expenses, technology resources, travel funds, athletic or activity needs, trips and excursions.

Faculty and staff are also the beneficiaries of generous support from Webb donors. One such named fund is the Donald L. Lofgren Endowed Director's Chair at the Alf Museum, established in honor of our esteemed museum director Don Lofgren who retired at the end of the year. Faculty funds also support research, travel, extended education, and more. In addition, faculty benefit from funds dedicated to specific academic programs such as the arts, mathematics, humanities, and paleontology, as well as capital improvements to faculty housing. More than $15 million has been given since the start of the campaign in 2017 for current operations, making possible unique opportunities such as Unbounded Days, which received high praise this past year. Matching funds from the E.E. Ford Foundation in support of DEI programing is another such example. Moreover, operating funds support the breadth of Webb experiences, big and small, that occur throughout the year and across campus. It is sometimes these smaller moments made possible by donations that don’t make the headlines but have a lasting impact. A few years ago, as we were finishing our last campaign, I called upon a member of the Class of 1949 for his annual gift. This donor has been giving to Webb for decades beginning with his first $3 gift in 1960. We chatted for a while and he was excited to support the school that had meant so much to him in his adolescence. He asked to

confirm the school address and gave a different street number than our current address. I corrected him and he replied, “go check your records.” Webb alumni are very wise and I knew better than to doubt him. I went into the archives and sure enough, right after World War II, there was an alternative address being used for a short time. I called him back and asked how it was possible that he remembered his high school mailing address more than half a century later. He laughed and reminded me that Webb was not just his school, it was his home. He asked if I remember my childhood address. I do. He then described to me the Webb community that housed his adopted mothers and fathers, his classmates who became his brothers, his birthday parties in Mrs. Webb’s dining room, and his misadventures on and off campus. He shared that Webb taught him values and integrity and the ability to think critically.

From this one conversation, I learned so much about philanthropy at Webb. We use big numbers, we have lofty goals, and we seek support for many important projects, but at the end of the day it comes down to impact and experience, and I am incredibly inspired by the passion that our donors feel for enhancing the lives of current students and future generations. If we accomplish one thing in the Centennial Campaign, that is my goal – to inspire each and every donor to invest in the lives of our students.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: Webb’s Taco Truck BY NICK LEE ’22

Let’s go on a drive. Don’t worry, it’ll be short, only five minutes away from Webb on Towne and Foothill. In the northwest parking lot, illuminated by a fading CVS Pharmacy sign, you’ll spot a taco truck. Actually, you’ll probably hear the massive crowd before you see it – firefighters mockingly chasing toddlers gripping foil wraps and teenagers laughing in the back of pickup trucks – all huddled around a smoky grill and a pineapple-topped rotisserie. Tattooed bodybuilders line up with police officers and elementary students who cannot get enough of the jarritos. And on Friday nights, you’ll always see a group of Webb students there too. Tacos bring people together.

8 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

“ Nick, you were and will always be an essential part of the taco truck. You brought the flavor of diverse perspectives and experiences, the spice of controversy, and the utility of a sturdy truck coming to do the hard work each and every day and serve its community. Students like you are the reason that the work of equity and inclusion is essential and why you have made such a powerful impact on the climate and culture at Webb. Best wishes as you bring a taco truck to another lucky school community.” – John Choi, Director of Equity This is community: folks of all backgrounds, ages, and identities finding common space and conversation. I credit Mr. Choi's office and the DEI program with being the “taco truck” of Webb. In that boxy Hooper office stocked with all-youcan-eat gummies, Webb students build community. DEI – diversity, equity, and inclusion – brings students together. I have never heard applause so loud as during a BSU open mic, nor experienced a space so raw as an affinity group. We keep it real. The definition of DEI can get lost in the grand gestures of political fanfare and storefront advertisements, but here’s what it means to me: no matter who you are, where you are from or where you are going, you are welcome here. You will find your people. We want to be your people. At Webb, you have the space to be yourself, real and intimate and uncomfortably you. So here goes. This is my attempt at DEI work, via this Webb publication. Hi, my name is Nick Lee. I am 5’11.5'' and despise that I cannot call myself 6 feet tall. I am terrible at pool, great at finding new taco stands, and harmfully competitive in all-you-can-eat competitions. I am learning to love my Korean heritage, but it is hard sometimes. Last week, an old surfer got in my face and asked if I could fight in kung fu or taekwondo. I didn’t need to be Asian to understand that those are fighting words. But tomorrow I leave for college, and in my last meal in California, my best friends and I are sharing Korean food, family-style. That’s the Korean culture I’m proud of, the part of myself I love to share. After all, Texas got nothing on our barbecue.

See, it’s not that hard. DEI work is just keeping it real. And in keeping it real, you learn to have raw conversations. Webb is a living and learning community, and the DEI program transcends both. We’re a global boarding school, composed of hundreds of students from distinct and intrinsically disparate identities. We ask these teenagers to live together, to grow together, to not only share meals but also share opinions on the death penalty and creationism. It’s a tall task, and yet, I lived it every day for four years. Such conversation and proximity forges a powerful shared space. My best friends are from Rancho Cucamonga, Madrid, and Beijing. Webb’s DEI work protects both our students and our classrooms. DEI empowers the students to speak from themselves, for themselves – and in these moments, we produce truly educational dialogue. This dialogue is the core of our Webb education. I was an Admission Fellow, and on tours, parents would always ask, “Was Webb a good education?” Yes. I have learned more at Webb than anywhere else because Webb takes learning beyond the classroom. Webb taught me the world is in my grasp, and called on me to change it. And so, Webb is built on DEI work. DEI education comes in two parts. First, it invites students to find intimacy and safety, to have tough conversations and look within themselves. Then, DEI asks us to pay it forward. Look back on that taco truck one last time. Look down Towne and Foothill, and further than Claremont and Southern California. Here is the real world, outside of the rolling green hills and newly-renovated Hooper Center. The real world is beautiful and broken. When we graduate, shake the hand of Taylor Stockdale, and leave the sanctuary of the black Webb gates, every Webb student knows two things. One, it is our generation's role to improve our world. Two, we always have a Webb community to come back to.

The Webb Fund

Education is Magic BY PETER GILMAN, DIRECTOR OF THE WEBB FUND I recently attended a conference in which a featured presenter challenged us to uncover our ‘Why’ for doing what it is we do. Why were we in education? How do you explain what it is you do and the importance of doing it? It was then that I heard a response so succinct, so clear in vision and spirit, that I’ve since adopted it as my own. In short, the speaker shared, “a great education is magic.” They expanded that a meaningful education is a transformative experience not simply by the depth of knowledge gained through a particular curriculum, but by the way that it challenges the student to dig deeper and investigate their role in their education. Furthermore, that such an experience can be designed intentionally to inspire the student to go out and share the benefits of that education with the world. Reflecting upon that answer later, I recalled my first moments on campus at Webb. Even arriving for the very first time, it felt like home. That is thanks in part to my own experience as a student at an independent day school in my hometown of Oklahoma City,

10 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

Oklahoma. Developing in that environment was often very challenging, but it was also incredibly rewarding. I received a tremendous amount of support at the times I needed it most, from the faculty and staff who felt like extended family. It was a safe environment that encouraged self-expression, understood the importance of community, and took to heart the value of educating students beyond the four walls of a classroom or the bindings of a textbook. Later, while pursuing my undergraduate degree at Occidental College, I discovered the field of advancement through the college’s student phonathon center. I welcomed the opportunity to channel my passion for Oxy through the generosity of the alumni, parents, and friends, who made my education possible. It’s hard to believe that was over ten years ago now! Especially now as we strive to grow Webb’s annual base of support in line with the goals of The Next 100: The Centennial Campaign, I am thrilled to bring that same passion to The Webb Schools as the Director of The Webb Fund. I look forward to bringing the magic of a Webb education to current students through the philanthropic support of our community. Thank you to all the generous and dedicated donors reading this report. I hope to have the chance to connect with each of you.

Senior Class Gift

The Class of 2022 Senior Gift Campaign 12 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

The senior class gift campaign is an opportunity to educate each outgoing class on the importance of philanthropy in the life of The Webb Schools. Every year, hundreds of alumni donors make a gift in support of myriad programs and needs at Webb that tuition alone does not cover. Throughout the academic year, the Office of Advancement and the Office of Alumni Relations work with seniors on all the ways to remain connected to Webb after graduation, emphasizing that the opportunity to give back is just one way to leave an impact on the Webb community. This year there was extra incentive for students to participate thanks to a matching gift challenge from Webb trustee Jordan Taylor ’02. Many of the seniors gave in response to the challenge, seeing their support matched to an area of campus which means most to them. This year’s class gave to scholarships and financial aid, The Webb Fund, a variety of student activity funds, and the Alf Museum. Several were also inspired enough to give $20.22 or above, joining Webb’s Pacesetter’s Club for recent graduates with their first gift.

The Class of 2022 achieved over 22% participation in honor of their graduating year. Dean of Students for Webb School of California Rick Duque had this to say: “They stepped up as they were stepping out. It was no surprise at all. Their generosity will allow others the opportunity to have the full Webb experience. They absolutely left Webb better than it was when they arrived!” Dean of Students for Vivian Webb School Sarah Lantz also remarked: “The Class of 2022 has always been a philanthropic, community-minded class—it doesn't surprise me they stepped up to the challenge to support Webb in such a heroic manner. Their service and dedication to the Webb community was exemplary. We will always be grateful to the Class of 2022 for their courage and generous spirit in giving back to Webb.” To learn more about supporting students during their time at Webb and beyond, please contact Peter Gilman, director of The Webb Fund, at (909) 482-5288 or pgilman@webb.org.

Faculty

A Faculty That Goes Above and Beyond BY MICHAEL SZANYI, DEAN OF FACULTY

Food and fun! These are the first things that come to mind when I think about celebrating the work of the faculty last year. Well … kind of. Resilient and hopeful also come to mind. With the ever-changing nature of the year, I think about the incredible support faculty provided to each other, to the students, and to the community. Underneath it all, there was a grounded energy that we would get through the year together.

UNFORTUNATELY, RELENTLESS AND HARROWING come to mind as well. I think about the moments that seemed never ending and the toll it took on our mental wellbeing. There was the quarantining, the centennial tent, January, dusting off Zoom. There’s no getting around that it was a tough year.

So, like I said, in true Webb fashion, the first thing that comes to mind is food! For example, I think of Nika Haleftiras who put together dorm family time with special dinner nights. With students volunteering to help cook, they made lasagna together, rolled meatballs, baked brownies, and formed assembly lines to carry items down from Nika’s house to the Alamo. Or, I think of Esteban Vasquez, who believes in learning through your stomach. In class they had sweet bread and coffee, different types of tamales, and traditional Mexican hot chocolate, all while developing cultural awareness and understanding the cultural impact of these foods. Or, I think of Anthony Flucker, who wanted to do something special with his advisory. They took turns making traditional Chinese food

Honestly, though, that’s not the article I want to write as I enter my third year as Dean of Faculty. Reliving some of those memories doesn’t quite serve us. Instead, I’d prefer to express gratitude for all the great work the faculty did last year, to authentically share the joy that they bring to Webb, and to celebrate their teaching inside the classroom and, perhaps more importantly than ever before, their expansive efforts outside of the classroom. 16 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

together and sharing stories about their families, reflecting on how beautiful it can be to share a meal together in this way. It’s not just food though. It’s also the fun, especially in the exploration of the world around us! For example, I think of Joseph Vincent, who was doing a mini unit on Chinese religions. After reading some simplified texts, the class went to the Williamson Gallery at Scripps College to look at Daoist and Confucian paintings where they were able to speak about form and content in expressive and nuanced ways. Or, I think about Susanna Linsley, who led a successful Unbounded Days right at the end of the Omicron wave. For many students, it was the first time they took a train downtown, visited Los Angeles, or went to a museum. For other students, it was the first time they had been to a restaurant in two years. And still for others doing a more outdoorsy course, they were thankful for the opportunity to challenge their bodies and for the happiness that being outside can bring. Or, I think of Andrew Neyer, whose golf team trip to Catalina to play Avalon couldn't be overnight, but they still made it a fun trip by adjusting their ferry ride home so the kids could play in the ocean after their match. And they loved it!

matter the external constraints, the faculty are always innovative in creating a community that can truly cherish being with one another. Of course, there is so much more I could mention. The Junior Scholars Program. The Halloween chalk drawing at Jones. The dance show. The creative writing students doing a roundtable dramatic reading of Act III of The Ferryman on the quad. For every one of these, there are many more to get mentioned. So, how do we fully express gratitude for all the great work the faculty did last year? The faculty got to the heart of who we are, reimagined the priorities of the classroom space, committed to process, empowered students, helped graduate the centennial class … for all of that and so much more, with the sincerest appreciation, I can say this: thank you for making us Webb!

All these seemingly simple moments remind us why we love Webb, but perhaps more importantly in this moment, I think they remind us why we are so thankful for the work of the faculty. They are a special group that helps to create the magic of this place. Sometimes it’s through food, and sometimes it’s through fun. But no

Perry Awards The Perry Awards were established and endowed in 1995 by generous donors to honor the life and work of former faculty Les and Barbara Perry, who devoted thirty years to the students of Webb and served the school loyally and in many capacities. The Perry Awards serve as a tangible reward for a job well done and for extraordinary dedication to the growth and development of Webb students. THE 2021-22 PERRY AWARD WINNERS: Joseph Vincent, World Languages Mr. Joseph Vincent dives into the study of World Languages – personally and as a teacher. Not satisfied with written and verbal fluency in Chinese and Spanish, he spent the summer of 2021 at Middlebury College’s prestigious graduate program in French studies as a recipient of the Davis Fellowship for Peace. He approaches his classes the same way, making the student experience his priority. In his classes, don’t expect to just learn vocabulary and conjugations. Expect to fully experience the language through highly deliberated and detailed class blocks. Outside of the classroom, Joseph enriches Webb’s community with his characteristic charm and wit, whether he’s supporting our international students, leading a hike or orchestrating a trip into Los Angeles. This Perry Award allowed Vincent to return to Middlebury and continue his studies as he cements his understanding of French and further strengthens his ability to serve Webb’s students. Joseph has a BA in Chinese language and literature from Reed College and an MA in Chinese literature from National Taiwan University. He joined Webb in 2019. Melissa Mani, Fawcett Library Ms. Melissa Mani is perhaps the ultimate utility player at Webb, providing support in the library, substituting in classrooms and championing students as an advisor and diversity, equity and inclusion advocate. As Webb’s assistant librarian, her multifaceted skillset ranges from running an independent study in

18 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

Arabic to ensuring students have a conducive place to study and the resources they need. Beyond this, she is dedicated to creating a true sense of belonging for Webb’s students. Melissa guides students with empathy, care and compassion. The reality is that no task is too large or too small for Melissa, and she handles each of them with professionalism and grace. She never seeks individual recognition or credit, as she truly does all these things for Webb because of how much she values and loves the work. Melissa received her BA in Islamic law and theology from Zaytuna College and her MA in religious studies from Claremont Graduate University before joining Webb in 2017. Jackie Leishman, Fine Arts For Mrs. Jackie Leishman, who teaches Webb’s Advanced Art course, art is life and life is art. She approaches art as a way of seeing, interpreting and living in the world. For her, art is a way of asking and answering serious questions – as demonstrated by her recent work addressing climate change. Jackie teaches that creativity is a skill we cultivate, practice and enjoy daily, and that success and failure are both legitimate aspects of the creative process. In summer 2022, Leishman continued her education through an art residency in Italy, studying such artists as Michelangelo, Bernini, Raphael, and Caravaggio and creating a new body of work inspired by the history of Rome. This contextual understanding of the development of western art will inform her class discussions and aid her in cultivating student voices, vision and studio practice – as well as her own skills. Jackie joined Webb’s fine arts department in 2017 and holds a BA from University of Georgia and an MFA in photography from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

For every faculty named, there are many more that should be recognized!

Faculty Awards The Laurence McMillin Excellence in Teaching Award Mark Lauer, Humanities Dr. Mark Lauer’s advice, recommendations, and solid sense of purpose permeate what he does both inside and outside of the classroom. Whether that’s helping his students navigate the big questions in Advanced Studies The Age of Enlightenment, or unpack the nuance in our cultural history in the 10th grade The American Idea course, Mark creates spaces that are inclusive, supportive of diverse voices, and asks students to find meaning, grounding, and perspective. Last year, Mark also championed the Breakfast Literary Magazine in Webb’s afternoon activities program, publishing literature and art that allow students to explore their imaginations, passions, and talents. Mark is genuinely enthusiastic, from his hearty hellos in the humanities office to his generous approach in the classroom. Mark is genuinely hip, just check out his stash of unique jackets and boots. Mark is also a bit of a trickster, as one colleague put it, “When I think of Mark, what comes to mind are his equal measures of gregariousness and mischievousness. No one is as ready to sit and talk about how things are going on in your life while simultaneously misleading you about the starting time of the next class rotation.” Mark’s spirit permeates through whatever he does, making Webb’s student, faculty, and community experience electric. In addition, Webb is so grateful that Mark is taking that passion for teaching and facilitating into the role of Lead Class Advisor for the senior class. The Class of 2023 is surely in good hands! For his dedication to helping everyone find balance, humor, and deeply grounded expression, the 2021-22 Laurence McMillin Excellence in Teaching Award goes to Dr. Mark Lauer. The Laurence McMillin Excellence in Teaching Award was established and endowed by David Loo ’79.

James T. Demetriades ’80 Endowed Prize for Unbounded Thinking Lauren Hartle, Humanities Unbounded teaching extends far beyond the classroom and far beyond what is classically thought of as teaching, and that is why Dr. Lauren Hartle immediately comes to mind when thinking of unbounded teachers. Lauren is kind, 20 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

generous, open, and unbounded with her time, energy, and passion for the health and well-being of everyone around her. In the dorm, Lauren has developed deep connections with students, so much so that she receives almost daily updates on the goings on of Harry Styles. In academic support, Lauren reaches out to students to help plan and achieve both academic and life goals, helping students develop intrinsic motivation and self-worth. In the humanities office, at the lunch table, and on the weekends, Lauren is always willing to pitch in, to offer perspective, to clean up that last bit of trash, to offer an open ear. She is a champion for students, for faculty, and for staff, and she makes authentic connections with everyone around her. Webb is so grateful that she agreed to serve as Interim Chair of English and Humanities for the fall of 2022, and as Dr. Theresa Smith stated, “Lauren’s keen intellect, her deep care for students and colleagues, and her imaginative and inspired teaching make her a wonderful contribution to the faculty.” For her dedication to unbounded thought, actions, teaching, connection, and expression, the 2021-22 James T. Demetriades Prize for Unbounded Teaching goes to Dr. Lauren Hartle. The James T. Demetriades ’80 Prize for Unbounded Thinking was established and endowed by James T. Demetriades ’80.

Jean E. Miller Excellence in Teaching Stephen Caddy, Math Positive. Super high energy. Caring. Enthusiastic. Passionate. Canada. These are some of the first words that come to mind when people describe Mr. Stephen Caddy. Simply put, Stephen is an impact teacher. In the math classroom, Stephen inspires students through his energetic, accessible, and supportive approach. His impact on our volleyball program is hard to sum up in just a few words. However, in short, Stephen took a program that was struggling to field just enough players to play a game, to a deep, thriving, and extremely successful program – touting multiple wins, league championships, and CIF appearances. His players cite that “Mr. Caddy is always so encouraging and so positive. Always doing his best to build us up, not to tear us down.” Additionally, he has served as a WSC Lead Class Advisor for multiple years, successfully setting the tone for each class and ensuring that each and every student in the class feels a sense of belonging and place here at Webb. But, perhaps the most impressive part of Stephen’s time at Webb has been all of the energy and

joy he has brought to the Webb community beyond his normal duties. Whether it is taking students curling over the weekends or starting the infamous Webb Street Hockey League, it is safe to say that his enthusiasm for life has permeated through the community since the day he stepped foot on campus. For his deep commitment to all aspects of life at Webb and the impact that he’s had on all of our community, the 2021-22 Jean E. Miller Excellence in Teaching Award goes to Mr. Stephen Caddy. The Jean E. Miller Excellence in Teaching Award was established and endowed by the Affiliates of The Webb Schools.

Thompson and Vivian Webb Award Nika Haleftiras, Science Ms. Nika Haleftiras has had quite a large impact on our community in three short years. Arriving to Webb freshly out of her undergraduate experience, Nika jumped right in to all things Webb. A couple of her major contributions during her time here include the following: serving as a cornerstone of Webb’s Integrated Physics & Chemistry team; thoughtfully revamping the AP Environmental Science curriculum; serving as an integral part of Webb’s basketball program; becoming one of the only female WSC dorm heads in the schools’ long history; earning her master’s degree all while working at Webb full time (and through a pandemic!); attentively serving as a trusted advisor, mentor, and excellent baker for 9th grade students. It is pretty apparent that Nika has achieved quite a bit during her short tenure here at Webb. However, while these are impressive individual accomplishments, what is more impressive about her resume is how she always accomplishes these things with Webb’s best interest in mind. She prioritizes the success of her students and the needs of the school in order to ensure that at the end of the day, Webb is a better place. Her Alamo residents all rave about how “Ms. H was a key reason why we had such a tight-knit community in Alamo this year. Ms. H really cares about each and every one of us.” It is clear that Nika’s reach at Webb has been far and wide. For her deep commitment to the Webb community and the extraordinary impact that she has been able to make in such a short period of time, the 2021-22 Thompson and Vivian Webb Award goes to Ms. Nika Haleftiras.

Jacques and Mimi Pauwels Award for Excellence in World Languages and Cultures Malick Mbengue, World Languages In so many more ways than one, Mr. Malick Mbengue embodies the spirit of the Pauwels Award. His love of French language and culture runs much deeper than what happens in his classroom. He exudes passion for travel and culture and has made a significant impact by sharing his personal stories and experiences with the community at large. Malick has a natural wanderlust and desire to connect his past to his present to better his future. In conversations he has had with colleagues as well as in his most recent request for professional growth, it is clear that his vision for the future of our French language program is tightly aligned with what Jacques Pauwels (Webb faculty from 1975-1994) envisioned for the future of language learning at Webb. With this award, Webb recognizes Malick’s contribution to not just the French program, but to making the community a better and more inclusive place. Additionally, Webb hopes that this award enables him to rediscover and reconnect with his roots, to encourage self-discovery, and to help Webb expand its roots. Webb hopes that this award serves as an affirmation of Malick’s deep contributions to our community and his sense of belonging here at Webb. In addition to his impressive work in world languages, Malick also coached the VWS varsity soccer team to its first CIF Southern Section title and their first-ever state championship this year. The team posted an undefeated season, going 8-0 in San Joaquin League play and 20-0 overall. Malick was named Coach of the Year for his tremendous work. For his intense love of world languages and bettering himself and those around him, the 2021-22 Jacques and Mimi Pauwels Award for Excellence in World Languages and Cultures goes to Mr. Malick Mbengue. The Jacques and Mimi Pauwels Fund for Excellence in World Languages and Cultures was established and endowed by Eric Pauwels ’79 in honor of his parents.

The Thompson and Vivian Webb Award was endowed by Edmund L. Piper ’43.

Health & Wellness

The Health & Wellness of Our Community BY MELANIE BAUMAN, DIRECTOR OF WELLNESS

From the very beginning of the pandemic, Webb engaged our entire community in thinking about how we not only survive a pandemic, but how we thrive. As we transitioned from languid days on Zoom to the exciting, and for some overwhelming, experience of being together (again for some, and for the first time for many), the administration and faculty began to think through what learning loss for an adolescent might look like in practical application. We would need to reteach our values, remind juniors stepping into leadership positions what they had learned about as incoming 9th graders about what makes Webb special. We knew from surveying the community that our energy would be different, that there was a true emotional toll of surviving a pandemic, and that to thrive together we would need to have open communication, allow significant space for emotional touch points and that rebuilding, establishing, or strengthening relationships with each other was key. Relationships and connection are where we started, and engaging our student leaders was crucial. Immediately, student leaders began to talk about what new students didn’t know: clean up after yourself in the Dining Hall; talk through disagreements; don’t rely on cancel culture to solve conflict; acknowledge and discuss the impact of words vs. their intent; oh and by the way, that classroom you can’t pronounce, it’s right over here! Student leaders

themselves felt that adjustment, as they searched their memories to take on their new roles, being reminded along the way and at times learning right alongside new students. The first few months of the 2021-22 school year highlighted how differently the pandemic was experienced for individuals in our community. Different countries and states passed through the year and a half prior with vastly different guidelines and safety nets. Some students had not been in large crowds for months, some had the privilege of living in spaces with open air

access all along, some had never experienced a lengthy lockdown, while others had been living in and out of various states of lockdown throughout. As a result, coming back together in a safe, COVID-preventative way was our priority. Beyond working with students to understand best health practices in the context of communal living, together we were vaccinated, we explored the safety of outdoor vs. indoor dining, we got used to masks in class, and toggled through weekly updates to our health process as the world learned best practices and adjusted with varying levels of protective measures. As we became accustomed to the space again, and health guidelines began to feel less foreign, our focus shifted to the way we are with each other in the celebratory and challenging moments. Students and adults alike focused on the ways we regain energy, as so many community members noted that exhaustion from constant social engagement seemed strangely intense. Pressure in these moments highlighted how our emotional bandwidth needed care and attention as we shifted once again to navigate the rebuilding of interpersonal conflict skills, something that extensive screen time and social distancing had shaken. We practiced ADEAR conversations with classes that struggled through conversations about identity; learned about each other through storytelling events; reflected on the change we all experienced through chapel talks; and spent time in each class reflecting on how we enter into each space, taking a

moment of personal reflection that helped normalize and breathe life into these initial challenges. We rode out waves of COVID worry, managed isolation spaces, adjusted to new and updated guidance, learned to take perspective when pushed to our limits with yet another moment of “COVID has taken from me...” – and we leaned hard into community, the connections that we knew from the beginning would be our largest and most preventative supports. We taught traditions to ¾ of the student body who had never seen or experienced these events before. We introduced transitions to the school that we would be taking in this and the coming years, and eventually we all began to look ahead to the future. Having talked about it for over a year and a half, we moved from surviving into full Webb thriving, and now we begin again, with a renewed foundation and excitement for the future.

Affiliates Benefit 2022 The Affiliates celebrated the return of their annual benefit on April 1, 2022, themed Webb 100: Think, Act, Lead, Give, with over 200 guests in attendance, including parents, family and friends. The night was filled with excitement, laughter, music, and support for Webb. This year’s event supported The Affiliates Fund for Academic Program Enhancements and Innovative Teaching Tools. With support from the Affiliates Benefit, Webb faculty can enhance their already unbounded classroom teaching, continue to advance student research and form course-deepening partnerships beyond Webb’s campus home. Proceeds from The Affiliates Benefit contribute directly to Webb’s distinctive programming seen throughout campus from the Alf Museum and the Robotics Team, to performing arts and science labs, just to name a few. Webb would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the event co-chairs Linda Metz P ’22, ’25 and Jennifer & Barry Oglesby P ’23, Affiliates Co-Presidents Janel Henriksen Hastings ’87, P ’22, ’25 and Gina Lee P ’22, and all the volunteers for making the 2022 benefit a great success.

From the Director of Alumni & Donor Relations

The Webb Connection BY LEXUS BEAMAN ’08, DIRECTOR OF ALUMNI & DONOR RELATIONS

Last year I had the privilege of standing next to my best friend as she said “I do” to her now husband. At their reception I told the story of how we became friends, better known as The Bagel Story. It was our freshman year at Webb in Jones dormitory and the story involved bunk beds, late night hunger, lots of laughs, and – you guessed it – a bagel. Since that night, we’ve been through college on opposite coasts, relationship ups and downs, many jobs, and countless moves. Through it all, the one thing that was constant was our friendship.

28 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

I can meet an alum from any decade, and we instantly understand and feel a kinship with one another.

Since joining the Alumni Office staff at Webb, I have met dozens of alumni who have shared very similar stories with me, albeit without a bagel. Through these conversations, we share a common understanding of how those experiences shaped our lives and still affect us to this day. I can meet an alum from any decade, and we instantly understand and feel a kinship with one another. This immediate bond is better known as the “Webb Connection.” It is the Webb Connection that binds us together as a community. It begins to form while you are a student, going through day-to-day life together, sharing meals and helping each other learn. It continues to build with those who you may not have shared time with as students but who you met later through events or chance encounters. It forms in the smallest of moments, in what may seem insignificant at the time, but becomes the lasting story you share at a wedding 17 years later. The Webb Connection was on full display at our latest alumni event in Los Angeles. Alumni from eight decades were in attendance, from our most recent graduating class of 2022 to a gentleman who

graduated in 1951. It was wonderful to see alumni sharing their Webb experiences with each other, finding common ground even though they were on campus decades apart. For example, an alumnus from the 2000s wanted to learn about the current sports program so he asked the recent 2022 graduates, sparking a lively conversation about athletics at Webb. Another alumnus from the 1960s told stories from “back in my day” to alumni from the 2010s who asked what was the same and different in those years. Some of my favorite Webb Connection stories occur in the most unlikely of places. Stories have been shared where an alum sees a person wearing a Webb T-shirt or jacket in an airport or foreign country, thousands of miles from Claremont, and asks if they attended Webb. Instantly, a connection forms. Nothing else drew these people together, except Webb. This connection has also helped alumni network with others in their field and gain internships and full-time employment. When an alum sees an applicant has attended Webb, they know this person leads with distinction and acts with honor and moral courage, without ever having met them. It’s the Webb Connection that gives alumni a professional advantage. The Webb Connection is what brings classmates and friends back together each year at Alumni

Weekend. Whether you’ve seen someone recently or not since you graduated five, ten, or even fifty years ago, you pick up where you left off like no time has passed. It keeps you reminiscing all day before dancing the night away to some of your favorite high school jams. In my role as Director of Alumni & Donor Relations, I hope to foster the Webb Connection within the alumni and greater Webb communities, so it grows stronger with each graduating class. I invite each of you to find new Webb connections and strengthen existing ones. • Text a friend just to say hello. • Reach out to a classmate you haven’t spoken to in a while to reconnect. • Offer to be a mentor to young alumni just starting out in the workforce. • Introduce yourself to someone wearing a Webb T-shirt no matter where you are. • Attend a Webb event and strike up a conversation with an alum from another era. You never know what small encounter or occurrence will turn into the story you tell for years to come. Together, we can – we will – make the Webb Connection the strongest it can be.

Legacy Hall of Fame We wish to give special recognition to the following donors who have given $1 million or more over the course of their lifetime to The Webb Schools and the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology. Their philanthropy has transformed our campus and impacted the lives of generations of students. $5 MILLION OR MORE

Blake ’68 and Andrea Brown Blake Brown and his wife, Andrea, have helped to transform our campus and educational programs. Their gifts have helped bring the Alf Museum into the modern age with significant support for the Hall of Life campaign, a research laboratory and fossil prep laboratory. They also supported the renovation of a NextGen science lab allowing for the highest level of research, the construction of new faculty housing and the renovation of student dorms, and a major renovation of Hooper Community Center in addition to the land acquisition adjacent to campus.

James D. ’42 and Lin Burke Few people or events have had the powerful impact that Jim and Lin Burke have had on Webb. The Burkes’ leadership gift to Webb came in the form of a family cabin on a lake. The cabin and surrounding property were sold for over $6 million, making the Burkes’ gift one of the largest in Webb’s history. With the proceeds of that sale, Webb built the Copeland Donahue Theater in 2008, the first new construction of an academic building since 1987. Jim and Lin’s gift will continue a family legacy of giving back by providing financial aid to deserving students.

Wayne “Skip” ’59 and Sharon Hanson Wayne “Skip” Hanson often said that when he arrived at Webb in the mid-1950s, he felt he had come home. Skip and his wife, Sharon, believed that all students should be able to receive a Webb education, no matter their financial resources – to feel the same sense of “home” he felt. In 1990, Skip, along with his brother Robert ’62 and their father Wayne, created the Bertha M. Lynch Principes Scholarship in memory of their maternal grandmother. The scholarship supports students who demonstrate academic excellence, qualities of admirable character, leadership potential and the ability to contribute positively to the spirit and life of the Webb community. Their incredible generosity will impact generations of students who, like Skip, call Webb home.

Col. John S. Rogers USAF (RET.) ’59 and the Mary Stuart Rogers Foundation During the past three decades, Col. John and June Rogers and the Mary Stuart Rogers Foundation have transformed the lives of Webb students. Through the Mary Stuart Rogers Endowed Scholarship and the Raymond M. Alf Peccary Society Chair, more than 265 students have received financial aid and the opportunity of a Webb education. In addition to his dedication to growing the schools’ endowment, Col. Rogers has supported capital projects such as the Mary Stuart Rogers Sports Center and Faculty Field, and provided support for the acquisition of land adjacent to campus.

Anonymous Donor $2.5 MILLION OR MORE

Gretchen Augustyn P ’89 and Family A former Webb trustee and current Alf Museum trustee, Gretchen Augustyn and her family endowed the salary of the Curator at the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology and created a fund to support the Curator’s research work with students and the scientific community.

Yan Cheung and Ming Chung Liu P ’10 Mr. Liu and Mrs. Cheung, parents of Ken Liu ’10, made the lead gift towards the Susan A. Nelson Performing Arts Center. They have also generously supported major dorm renovations including the historic Alamo renovation in 2009 and a significant remodel of the chemistry lab in 2016.

James E. Drasdo ’63 James Drasdo has supported Webb in a variety of ways including unrestricted gifts to The Webb Fund, gifts to capital projects, and gifts to the endowment. He chaired Webb’s Building Character campaign which raised over $22 million. He has made leadership gifts to help establish the Les and Barbara Perry Faculty Enrichment Fund, to support a class scholarship fund, to dedicate the performing arts center, and to fund a major technology initiative.

Legacy Hall of Fame (continued) Robert A. Hefner III ’53 Robert Hefner’s gifts have been focused on supporting faculty and unbounded thinking, and in 1998 he established the Raymond M. Alf Inspirational and Unbounded Teaching Chair in Science. This endowed fund ensures the schools’ ability to attract and retain a teacher of Raymond Alf’s caliber. He also established an endowed fund for Excellence in Science and endowed the Unbounded Thinkers Symposium with the goal of inspiring Webb students to explore new opportunities.

Avery McCarthy ’52 Avery McCarthy’s gifts to Webb have revolved around enhancing technology in the library and funding new technology in classrooms as well as the Barbara Mott McCarthy Aquatic Center. In addition to the McCarthy Collaborative Learning Lab established in 2000, Avery has helped to fund new software programs and licenses for computer labs and dormitories.

Estate of David J. ’37 and Virginia E. Pinkham In 2000, Webb received over $4 million from a charitable trust set up by David (1919-1998) and Virginia Pinkham. Their gift was used in part for construction projects, faculty development, and programs that will help the schools continue to promote the character of its students.

Anonymous Donor $1 MILLION OR MORE

The Ahmanson Foundation A pre-eminent Southern California institution, The Ahmanson Foundation has partnered with Webb in many of the schools’ finest achievements, including providing yearly support of deserving students through its Pre-Collegiate Scholarship Program, funding for a faculty endowment fund, Webb’s technology infrastructure and the Ahmanson Lecture Hall, and supporting the construction of the Susan A. Nelson Performing Arts Center.

Guilford C. Babcock ’49 It’s a rare relationship that not only endures but grows over eight decades, but that’s the kind of relationship Dr. Guil Babcock has with The Webb Schools. The cornerstone of that relationship was his lasting friendship with the late Les and Barbara Perry who served Webb for over 30 years. Guil honored their legacy by establishing the Les and Barbara Perry Fund for Faculty Enrichment which supports the annual Perry Awards that provides outstanding Webb 34 THE WEBB SCHOOLS

Russell Fawcett Memorial Library and a bequest to complete renovations to the Jameson Dormitory. Dave was a member of the Webb faculty for 34 years and, along with his wife, math teacher Diane Wilsdon, has quietly and thoughtfully enriched the lives of thousands of Webb students through his wisdom and support. In fact, his parents were Hollywood legends having won an Academy Award in 1933 for co-writing the screenplay adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel, Little Women. At Webb, Vic was an equestrian, both as a sport and a hobby. He kept a horse on campus and followed all of the races in the news. Following Webb, he served three years in the Army during

WWII and graduated from Williams College with Dean’s List honors. Eventually, he struck out on his own forming the Heerman Bloodstock Agency and became one of the most successful breeders of thoroughbred racehorses in the country. A distinguished alumnus, life trustee and consistent donor, Al dedicated his life to the advancement of The Webb Schools, giving every year and joining the Thompson & Vivian Webb Society by making a planned gift to the schools. He was an early champion of the establishment of Vivian Webb School and a close friend to Thompson and Vivian Webb. Membership in the Hastings Society is automatic after you have made a gift to Webb or the Alf Museum for three consecutive fiscal years (measured from July 1 to June 30). GIVING

Leading By Example Great leaders lead by example and nothing could be more true than celebrating the forward-thinking generosity of two Heads of Schools who collectively led Webb for more than a third of its first century. Taylor Stockdale and Susan Nelson have blue and gold coursing through their veins. Their history is our history, which is why we are happy to celebrate their recent planned gifts in honor of Webb’s Centennial. Head of Schools Taylor Stockdale fondly recalls the impact of his life at Webb as he concludes his final year in the leadership role. “Anne and I feel so grateful to have Webb play such a central role in our lives. We really grew up here, at least as adults and as a couple. And raised our kids here and watched them benefit from this extraordinary education firsthand. We have had the great fortune of immersing ourselves in the life of the school for 35 years. It is our great honor to do our small part in ensuring the Webb community remains so special for the years to come.” Similarly, Susan Nelson is never too far from Webb to immerse herself in the ongoing work of propelling us forward. As a Life Trustee and a member of the Campaign Executive Committee, Susan’s continued dedication to Webb is inspiring. She states, “Webb’s impact on my life and the lives of my family was transformative. Leaving our home and family in New York was challenging, but the Webb community embraced us and became our extended family. My sons are proud Webb alumni who maintain close relationships with Webb buddies. It was certain and inevitable Webb would be included in my estate plan. No other institution means more to me than Webb. My wish for Webb is that it continue to educate and be home to young people who will be the people of character and leaders the world so needs.” Taylor and Susan join over a hundred alumni, parents, and former staff who have included Webb in their estate planning. A Tale of Two Friends and Two Funds The power of alumni networking and a shared desire to give back. This is the story of Michael Chang ’92 and Alvin Hung ’93. Both Michael and Alvin attended Webb in the early 1990s. Both founded and led companies based in Silicon Valley involving video technology. Michael, like Alvin, now lives in Hong Kong and operates businesses in the U.S. and abroad. In 2012, Michael and his wife, Alicia, created a scholarship fund to support deserving Webb students. In 2021, Alvin and his wife, Jacinta, also created a scholarship fund inspired by the experience of the Changs. This story is one of many. It is a story of friendship, of professional success, of maintaining connections and of living Webb’s values. The Alvin ’93 and Jacinta Hung Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to students and their families to provide access to a Webb education. Endowed funds such as this are invested alongside other endowed funds that provide resources for faculty support, physical plant excellence, academic programs, and the Alf Museum to name a few. Investments are managed by Goldman Sachs & Co. and the Board of Trustees regularly reviews investment research, strategy, management, and performance. Annual payout is a fixed percentage of the fund’s market value over a twelve-quarter rolling average. Endowed funds like the Hung Scholarship are meant to be perpetual and can be increased over time through future philanthropy. For more information about creating an endowed fund, contact Bob Fass, chief advancement officer, at (909) 482-5260 or bfass@webb.org.

Thompson & Vivian Webb Society At Webb today, as in years past, we educate and inspire young people to act with honor and moral courage in everything they do. This combined with a drive for academic excellence provides our moral compass and forms our mission. Webb nurtures smart, curious, and independent-minded students to become bold and courageous leaders. You can help perpetuate these values by ensuring that we are able to support the best and brightest students without regard to a family’s ability to pay the full cost of tuition. Our mission and our future depend on it.

GIVING

Alf Museum Endowment Continues to Grow Support for the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology has grown steadily in recent years, and the 2021-22 fiscal year brought in some of the largest gifts to the museum endowment to date. Museum Trustee, and daughter of Webb alumnus George Whitney ’31, Terry Baganz and her husband Bruce established the Olive W. and Bruce P. Baganz Fund for Geology at the museum in November 2021. This fund will provide perpetual support for geology-focused museum programs. Fieldwork, museum classroom technology and resources, visits to other natural history institutions and outreach with an emphasis on the study and practice of geology will all be provided for by this new endowed fund. "We can't understand past life unless we fully understand the rocks our fossils are found in. This new fund will elevate our ability to teach geological concepts in our museum classes and outreach program, and support cutting-edge research in the lab and the field,” says Dr. Andy Farke, Museum Director. Museum endowment giving also expanded through gifts to the Donald L. Lofgren Endowed Director’s Chair Fund. Established in 2019 by Kenneth De Nault ’61, the Lofgren Director’s Chair supports the Museum Director position and was created in honor of Dr. Don Lofgren. Since 2019, the fund has received more than 40 gifts from alumni, parents, and friends across the decades. The Fund doubled in size this last year thanks in part to generous lead gifts by Museum Trustee, James Hall ’59 and his wife Jean, and the estate of Samuel Zemurray, III ’61. Gifts made to the endowment become a permanent and critical revenue source for the operating budget for the Alf Museum. For more information about supporting the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology, please contact Danielle Gordon at (909) 482-5267 or dgordon@webb.org.

PLANNED GIFTS

Bequests, Testamentary Trusts, Charitable Trusts and Life Income Plans:

Webb accepts gifts of appreciated stock or mutual fund shares.

Planning a gift to The Webb Schools or the Alf Museum through your will or living trust can be achieved through a new document or a codicil to an existing document. You may specify a dollar amount, a percentage of your total estate or a piece of personal property. Estate gifts made through a will or trust may also help reduce federal estate tax liability and allow you to create a charitable legacy that aligns with your personal values. The Advancement Office can help you make a decision regarding your financial plans, which can also include charitable gifts that pay you income during life or provide for your heirs.

Matching Gifts:

Retirement Assets:

Give Online: Make your tax-deductible gift immediately to The Webb Fund or Alf Museum. Go to webb.org/giving

Gifts of Securities:

Increase your giving power through matching gifts. Many companies will match the charitable contributions of their employees.

Gifts of Property: Property gifts can include real estate and tangible personal property such as antiques, art, and the like.

Donate part or all of your unused retirement assets, such as your IRA, 401(k), 403(b), pension or other tax-deferred plan. If you are 72 or older as of July 1, 2021, you can also transfer up to $100,000 per year without paying income tax on the withdrawal and it can satisfy your required minimum distribution.

Remainder Interest in a Personal Residence or Farm: You may retain a life interest in your home or farm while deeding the property to The Webb Schools or the Alf Museum. Though you may continue to live in or use the property, you may claim a tax deduction at the time the property is transferred.

Life Insurance: The Webb Schools or the Alf Museum can be a total or partial beneficiary of an existing whole life insurance policy, or a new policy may be taken out for this purpose. Life insurance can be used to cover charitable gifts made from your estate. Annuities may also be given to Webb or the museum. Contact Danielle Gordon at dgordon@webb.org or (909) 482-5267 for more information.
