Philadelphia City Council Rules Committee Unanimously Approves Zoning For $450 Million Stadium District Hotel And Casino
T
he Philadelphia City Council Rules Committee today unanimously endorsed the zoning for Stadium Casino, LLC’s new destination hotel casino resort in Philadelphia’s Stadium District. The Project, which was awarded the last casino license in the Commonwealth by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board in late 2014, is being developed in partnership between The Cordish Companies and Parx Casino (“Parx”). The privately financed $450 million world-class project will include a Las Vegas-style casino floor featuring more than 2,000 slot machines and more than 125 table games; a new 200+ room luxury hotel, spa and conference center; valet parking and an approximately 2,600 space parking garage; local and nationallyrecognized destination restaurants; and live entertainment venues. The Project is immediately proximate to the Philadelphia Sports Complex, already a major tourist destination, drawing 8.5 million visitors a year. Ideally situated off Interstates 76 and 95, the property is positioned to become a true regional destination resort casino. Stadium Casino, LLC will set a new standard in development in the City of Philadelphia in the areas of economic opportunity and inclusivity for local residents. The Project will generate over $2 billion in economic stimulus along with $100 million in tax revenues for the City in just its first five years of operation, including $25 million to Philadelphia’s School District. Stadium Casino will also create 3,000 new construction jobs which will generate approximately $145 million in estimated new wages and salaries (direct and indirect) during construction. Upon completion of the Project, 2,000 new permanent jobs will be created. Hourly workers will earn a living wage of at least $12 per hour for all employment categories including subcontractors and vendors. Career opportunities will be available in every field, including hotel operations, finance, marketing, human resources, information technologies, food and beverage, facilities, security and surveillance and gaming operations. The Stadium District Hotel and Casino project will be one of the major charitable contributors and participants in the community and has received support from all five surrounding South Philadelphia Neighborhood Groups. Stadium Casino remains committed to engaging community groups and residents within the civic associations to work together to enact improvements in the neighborhoods and has established a Community Charitable Fund amounting to a minimum of $15 million in grants from the project to local communities during construction and the first 20 years of operations.
With wearables such as the Apple Watch becoming the new must-have mobile technology for travelers, hotels need to “gear up” so that guests can “charge up” these devices. Next week at HX: The Hotel Experience, Kube Systems will showcase an innovative accessory for guestrooms and public spaces that enables Apple Watch wearing travelers to charge their devices and leave Magsafe charging cables at home. The new KS Arm™ with built‐in Magsafe charger will be available to hotels equipped with the KS Clock™ (in-room) and KS Portable™ (public spaces) charging systems. The KS Arm™ will be on display in the Kube Systems Booth #2327 during the HX event, to be held Nov. 8 to 10 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York. What makes this product special? “Some of today’s biggest hotel companies are touting adoption of smartwatch technologies to enable their guests to more interact more easily with their branded app and also use the device for other convenient, high-touch applications, such as unlocking their room doors, paying for meals, or even checking in and out,” said Kube Systems Vice President David Weinstein. “As wearables become more mainstream to enhance the hotel experience, guests will soon begin demanding the ability to charge these devices just as they have
come to expect charging for smartphones and tablets. Kube Systems is proactively exceeding guest expectations by enabling hoteliers to solve a need before it becomes a demand.” Using wired and wireless technologies, Kube Systems’ delivers the charging power guests need no matter where they are located on premises. The KS Arm™ easily attaches to the back of all KS charging units. The KS Portable™ comes equipped with an Apple® Lightning, Apple® 30-pin, and Micro-USB flip-out cable, two additional USB ports and Qi wireless charging; the KS Clock™ mirrors these charging features, however Qi wireless charging is optional. As global charging standards change, the hardware is fully upgradable, making the Kube both future proof and investment proof. The KS Clock™ is an innovative power solution that features an intuitive alarm clock, Bluetooth streaming and the ability to charge up to six mobile devices. Set up can be facilitated using Kube Systems’ Room Programmer launched via an Android App and comes equipped with replaceable and upgradeable modular cables that keep the KS Clock™ from becoming obsolete. The KS Portable™ is a standalone charging Kube without clock or audio functionality. It is ideal for any hotel space where outlets are in short supply – the lobby, restaurant, bar or event space corridors.
Marriott’s Plan To Buy Starwood For $12.2 Billion Could Trigger More Hotel Mergers Marriott International Inc.’s plan to acquire Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. will create the world’s largest hotel company and could trigger more mergers as rivals jockey to compete. The deal announced Monday to unite Marriott and Starwood, valued at about $12.2 billion, would create a hotel company with 5,500 hotels and more than 1.1 million rooms in more than 100 countries. The new behemoth would own 30 hotel brands including the Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott, Courtyard, St. Regis, W, Sheraton and Westin. In California, Marriott has 312 hotels and Starwood has 71. Marriott’s size and breadth after the acquisition could prompt other hotel companies, such as Intercontinental Hotel Group and Hilton Worldwide, to consider joining forces with smaller operators to avoid being outpaced.

a Voile at La Réserve Ramatuelle, headed up by Chef Eric Canino, has been awarded its first Michelin Star, adding another string to the bow of this deeply glamorous spa-hotel in the hills of the Côte d’Azur, France. High above the Mediterranean sits La Voile’s relaxed terrace shaded by crisp white sails…here light, healthy dishes, using the highest quality produce, are served to honour the authentic flavours of the South of France. Chef Canino’s divinely light recipes have the elegance required to tickle the taste buds, whilst eliminating any tinge of guilt – there
are no added fats (aside from olive oils selected for their aromas and delicacies), or refined sugars in any dishes. He is a virtuoso of nutritional equilibrium, continually reinventing a classic Provençal repertoire by drawing on irreproachably fresh products selected in accordance his exacting standards. The hotel provides the perfect terroir for growing Mediterranean fruit and vegetables and so Canino seized the opportunity to create his dream kitchen garden. Signature dishes include La Voile’s Traditional Salade Nicoise with rare, spicy tuna, Fish of the Day ‘a la

Generator Paris

Generator Paris - DesignAgency
G
enerator Paris is the newest location in Generator’s quickly expanding chain of distinctive and eclectic urban design hostels. Located in the 10th Arrondissement – the trendiest Parisian neighbourhood known for its hip galleries, shops, cafés and bars, Generator stands opposite the prestigious French Communist Headquarters by Oscar Niemeyer, just steps from Canal Saint-Martin and Buttes-Chaumont Park, and a 15–minute walk from the Gare du Nord train station. Constructed in 1985 as an eight-storey office block, the property was gutted and transformed by Parisian project architect, Studios d’Architecture Ory & Associés, with interiors by Toronto-based DesignAgency, under the creative direction of Anwar Mekhayech. The property follows Generator’s universal concept of affordable and design-driven accommodations in prime locations, with an emphasis on a wide range of vibrant social spaces. Accommodating up to 916 guests in a range of shared rooms, twin rooms and penthouse rooms with private
terraces—all with private en-suite bathrooms—this is the largest Generator property to date. The interior design was inspired by the cinematic experience of strolling Paris’ streets and discovering its romantic moments, changing moods and rich colours. To highlight these themes, Mekhayech and his team created a series of mise-en-scènes that playfully flaunt their simultaneous fiction and reality. The vibe is hip and exciting, mixing the concrete/industrial backdrop with warm materials, tactical textures, vintage finds from Parisian flea markets, signature design elements including those from Tolix, Jielde and Tom Dixon, and unique pieces made by emerging industrial and furniture designers such as Blom & Blom, Spain’s Lobster’s Day and local artists including Romain Guillet and You Talking to Me. Stepping off Colonel Fabien Place into the lobby, guests are greeted by the dramatic sparkle of a lit marquee, suspended over a lively, Mondrian-inspired reception desk. and kilim sectionals, and a typographic mural by Dutch designer and typographic artist, Ceizer. Channeling the vibe of Paris’ many brasserie-lined streets, Café Fabien and its adjoining canteen open up to a garden and solarium. A curved concrete stair descends to the bar that conveys the impression of a secret Parisian metro party, complete with retro seat fabrics and curved metro tiles, terminating in a super-graphic print of a platform by local French photographer Ludovic Le Couster. Opening in the spring of 2015, the roof terrace will also have a spectacular bar with a pop-up crêpe stand and sunset views of Montmartre and Sacré-Coeur. According to Mekhayech, “this generator project allowed us the opportunity to give the interiors a bold attitude and a unique spirit, taking the guest on a cinematic journey. Rather than connecting each space, the design becomes more of an exploration of ideas— both real and surreal. There is so much diversity in Paris, that as a designer you can really do anything!”

The House Of Peroni
Take An Unexpected Journey Into The Italian Home At The House Of Peroni Residency The House of Peroni opened its doors in east London once again this October, bringing to the capital the most immersive and multi-sensory residency to date. From 29th October - 25th November at 152 Brick Lane (E1 6RU), the month-long event bought the heart of the Italian home to London; giving all those who are curious to discover and hungry to explore, the opportunity to experience the transformed space - to eat, drink and make themselves at home. Entitled ‘Vita all’Interno’ - meaning ‘a life lived inside’ - The House of Peroni residency welcomed guests through one of its many doors to enjoy delicious Michelin-starred food, innovative Peroni Nastro Azzurro infused cocktails and intriguing surroundings, all inspired by the Italian home. The experience, curated by Gingerline’s creative founder, Suz Mountfort, and immersive storytellers,
Reuben Feels starts in the heart of the home. Guests entered the warm bustling kitchen and were greeted by delightful smells and a never ending dining table. From there, they were invited to explore and enjoy the airy laundry room inspired by Italian couture, and try one of Peroni Nastro Azzurro’s innovative serves whilst relaxing in the autumnal covered terrace area. Welcomed by a series of passionate and alluring ‘nonna’s’ who ran the home, each guest was able to curate their very own personal experience by obtaining a key which did, quite literally, open the door to experiences hidden within the event – revealing a new world where nothing is quite as it seems. At the centre of The House of Peroni Residency was a five course private dining experience created by Michelin-starred Sicilian chef Accursio Craparo.
Website: www.thehouseofperoni.com
As guests took a journey through the ever-changing household, alive with the hustle and bustle of daily life, they discovered different bars – each with a range of Peroni Nastro Azzurro infused drinks created by award-winning mixologist at The Langham Hotel, Simone Caporale. Other creative talent that collaborated on the Residency included surrealist art director and set designer Rhea Thierstein, who is known for her whimsical creations, and Italian paper installation artist, Francesca Signori whose work also featured heavily throughout. The House of Peroni took up residence at 152 Brick Lane, London, E1 6RU from 29th October, closing 25th November. For more information about The House of Peroni visit: www.thehouseofperoni.com

Dinner guests may choose from the 13˚/59˚ tasting menu, or the three choice short menus; on Sundays the restaurant relaxes, with brunch and classic cocktails, accompanied by live jazz. Commenting on Andy and Roz’s appointment and the launch of 13˚/59˚, Eoin O’Sullivan, Group General Manager said, Our ethos in opening 13˚/59˚ is to deliver a restaurant of international standard that highlights the beautiful ingredients that Barbados has to offer. Andrew Turner comments on his new role, ‘I’m relishing the challenge of establishing a gold standard fine dining restaurant which offers something really different and enticing for visitors to Barbados and for the local population. I’ve been impressed by the range and quality of local Barbadian produce available, which has more than matched my desire to source as many ingredients locally as possible. Meet The Luxury Resort In The Maldives That Encourages Its Guests To Drink The Local Water “Do drink the local water” is the advice given to guests staying at the all-suite Hideaway Beach Resort & Spa Maldives as it begins producing its own drinking water. The move to produce fresh water, made from desalinated ocean water is one of the luxury resort’s new steps towards delivering services with a sound environmentally-friendly purpose. “With the move to producing our own drinking water, we expect to save around 3,000 kilos of plastic bottles each year,” said general manager, Carsten Schieck. “Producing our own water saves on importing tonnes of bottled water each year and more importantly of
course, greatly reduces the number of plastic bottles we need to dispose of in a country that’s still working on refining its recycling capabilities.
drinking standards. The water is served to guests in glass bottles which are then returned to the bottling plant for washing and re-filling.
The five-star island resort expects to produce around 400 litres of drinking water every day – including both still and sparkling varieties – saving the importation of around 12 tonnes of drinking water each month. Tucked away in the middle of the staff village, the bottling plant is located behind the resort’s water desalination plant where the water is piped in and undergoes two more rounds of filtration and sterilisation to ensure the water meets international
Future ecological plans include the planting of organic herb gardens on the island; identifying composting and waste re-use opportunities and increasing usage of solar power in various areas.

estled amongst the vines of Victoria’s Yarra Valley, 35km northeast of the city is Hutch & Co. From its humble beginnings as the 1800s ironmongery store formally known as Hutchinson’s, the site was transformed into a modern restaurant, cafe. Engaging the full services of the studio, which span interior, building, product and branding design, Hutch & Co was an exercise in composition and contrast between materials, which are wrapped, extruded or intersected to playful effect. Tasked with delivering a space that considered an architectural extension to the existing building, an outdoor dining area and multi-zoning, we decided to strip back and remove all the existing internal walls and linings. With only the exposed brickwork left, we were able to introduce a refined palate of materials and finishes. Pale American Oak timber is a signature feature at Hutch & Co. Adorning the ceiling and wall in the main dining area, the pattern articulated here carries
through from the timber to the tiling, giving the venue its own unique personality. Lined in the same rhythm, the open plan kitchen encourages a dialogue between patrons and the chefs. Offset by the mix of matte and gloss tiles that coat the bar, the rawness of the wood acts in contrast to the concrete finishes and softens the space. The studio’s newly designed lighting pendants for Meizai are paired with our Silho collection and grey felted upholstery to create a sense of intimacy. This design language extends to the branding, which is bold, recognisable and synonymous with the site’s history. Seven meters wide and stretching across the top of the black façade, is the Hutch & Co insignia. Attracting the attention of locals and those passing through the countryside, the frontage echoes the architecture of the local area and was maintained as a design consideration. Set back from the street, this extruding tiled surface area and its built in bench seating activate the frontage and invites pedestrian interaction.

Throughout the entire design process, we were always conscious of the opportunity afforded to us by the Yarra Valley and set out to design a space that continuously captured these views. White tiled walls underpinned by black steel details frame the scenery and lush country terrain, which is referenced internally with greenery from Glasshaus. In establishing this level of engagement with the site environs, we introduced an element of transparency that meant being able to stand on either side of the building and seeing through to the other side. Opening up the space in this way not only saw us gain natural light and visual access to the breathtaking surrounds, it enabled us achieve a layered effect within the venue, in which the interior and exterior blend to form a single expression. www.biasol.com.au

Ormerod Design
Ormerod Design provides tasteful service for Majestic Wine
L
eeds-based architectural practice, Ormerod Design Ltd, has completed a contract to design the new Watford head offices of Majestic Wine as part of a £2 million refurbishment. The three-storey property was built in the 1980s – generally considered a non-vintage decade in architectural terms – and purchased in 2014 by Majestic Wine with a view to stripping back the interior to a shell and transforming it into contemporary office space, meeting and training facilities totalling 3,087 square metres. Working with quantity surveyors Michael Bowker & Associates, M&E consultants Cundall and Nationwide Building Contractors, Ormerod played a leading role in the transformation with a generous splash of high-end style featuring a striking open staircase as the central hub and a custom-designed, state-of-the-art wine storage and tasting counter used by Majestic’s expert
buyers to test products before they hit the stores. Other elements include a new reception, meeting and board rooms, light training facilities, communal break-out areas, LED lighting throughout for reduced energy usage, charger points for electric cars and shower rooms to promote the company’s ‘cycle to work’ initiative. Stuart Williams, Property Director at Majestic Wine, said: “We are delighted with the outcome of the project which was delivered to an exceptional standard on time and to budget and has provided a facility that everyone comments on. It’s a great place to work, very smart without being ostentatious, and the building has captured the character of the business, which everyone who comes into contact with Majestic can see, particularly on the ground floor space which focuses on the presentation of our wine products.”
Website: www.ormeroddesign.co.uk
Armine Sutton of Ormerod Design said: “One of the key aims was to create space which encourages interaction and collaboration between staff over three floors with the spiral staircase as the focal point of this dynamic. We have incorporated a comprehensively high specification, including structural glass and stainless steel balustrade, solid oak doors and windows, custom-built revolving entrance doors, high-tech chilled and boiling water Vivreau taps and high-tech security systems. These superior features have been introduced whilst delivering cost savings of over £1.1 million on the client’s original estimate through careful management of the project, the procurement method and value engineering. Many of the stand-out features, including the tasting counter and reception counter, were manufactured from our designs by a family-run company of bespoke joiners.”

The January Furniture Show 2016
The Importance Of Furniture And Furnishings In Hotels Q&A With Mary Merrills
W
ith growing internet sites such as booking.com and tripadvisor, consumers are becoming ever more discerning when it comes to hotels. Here, Mary Merrills, marketing manager of the January Furniture Show, tells us why furniture and furnishings have such an important role in the hotel market and what she looks for when it comes to choosing the right hotel for her stay. Where’s the nicest place you’ve stayed? And why? Claridges - I’ve been lucky enough to stay there twice. Everything about it is a joy - the sumptuous furnishings, the individual character, the history, the perfect customer service and central location for everything London. Loved it! Where do you go to find a good hotel? My first stop is Small Luxury Hotels of the World, followed by Booking.com What are the three items you look for in a hotel room? Funky, but comfortable furnishings, a kettle so that I can make tea and a walk in shower. How can furniture and furnishings set the scene in a hotel? I love bright colours, interesting art and modern furniture, especially if put together in an eclectic mix. I get a little thrill then - like I’ve stepped Telephone: 020 8387 1270
temporarily into another world. If however a fantastic lobby isn’t carried through to the rooms I feel cheated.
and efficient customer service and a fun bar serving interesting cocktails.
What’s the best thing about staying away from home? Someone else making the bed. Crisp ironed bedding and fluffy towels.
What do you see as a big trend at this year’s January Furniture Show for the contract market? Mixing patterns and textures seems to be trend coming in - florals combined with geometrics in fabrics, aged leather combined with woven fabrics in upholstery, and glass combined with reclaimed or distressed wood in cabinet.
Where’s the best hunting ground for new interior ideas? Working in furniture trade shows is a dream for me. I get very excited seeing all the new designs, combinations of textures, fabric and colour trends - and all before they hit the shops. The variety at the January Show is particularly good and it has extra buzz because it’s at the start of the year so there is a level of expectation about how interior trends will take off that year. I end up wanting everything! Describe your dream hotel? One that is big enough to have good facilities but not too large with endless corridors of boxy rooms, where everything in them is the same. It would have modern, but comfortable furnishings, a mix of wacky art and sculpture. The rooms would be individual with lush fabric covered, statement headboards, harmonious bright but warm colour schemes, comfortable beds, spacious bathrooms, nice smellies, tea/coffee facilities and of course a nice view - not a car park or an airconditioning unit! All tied together with friendly
EMAIL: sales@januaryfurnitureshow.com
What’s the best thing that’s happened for hotels in the last 10 years? The obvious answer is technology - flat screen or now Smart TVs, with interactive services. But for me as a techno dummy it is that hotels seem to be catching on that they have to continually update and refresh their rooms and décor. We want better luxury than we have at home when we stay away. That and good customer service make me return to a hotel. How could hotels be better? Customer service - it doesn’t matter how wonderful a hotel looks if the customer service is lacking guests won’t return. The January Furniture Show 2016 exhibition will run from Sunday January 24 to Wednesday January 27 at Birmingham’s NEC.

Olga Nur Restaurant
the World Of Hospitality
Olga Nur Restaurant Arquitetos Associados Architects The design for Olga Nur Restaurant is set from the definition of many ambiances with goals to enhance its openness and integration with the street and, at the same time, to promote a clear distinction between an intimate interior, with special lighting, and an informal exterior - tables by the sidewalk and sheltered spaces with fabric pergolas -, inviting people who stroll in Lourdes - where the best bars and restaurants of Belo Horizonteare placed - to come in.
However, the most important element would probably be the roof made of almost 80,000 wood pendants, whose waves create diverse perceptions of space, seemingly to an inverted topography. The project includes as well the furniture design of steel rods shelves and wine cellar and Olga high wooden bench, in pinus. www.olganur.com.br
The restaurant’s design is composed by few materials: wood, black lacquer, building steel rods and glass. In opposition to a strict color pallet inside, the outside allows a colorful experience, with orange chairs, wood and different fabrics.

BALMORALS OFFERING CANOVA FOR THE SMALLEST ROOM IN THE HOUSE Independent supplier of sanitary ware, Balmorals, is now offering a compact solution for the smallest of bathrooms or washrooms with, as its name ‘Canova’ suggests, a distinctly Italian flavour to the design. The Canova range includes a washbasin and toilet with close-coupled cistern, which presents a projection of just 620mm: making the Canova pan perfect for bijous bathrooms. Meanwhile the space-saving washbasin will stand just 400mm from the wall. Also available to compliment the Canova suite is matching wall hung or freestanding bathroom furniture – these too have a projection of 400mm. The cistern is available with a dual flush function push-button of 6/4 litres while to meet requirements for new build installations regarding water saving, it can easily be altered to 4/2.6 litres. The close-coupled WC pan also comes with a slow close seat, which can be removed for maintenance.
A high specification refurbishment and extension project at a residential property in a desirable area of West London has included installation of linear shower drains selected from the extensive range of Dallmer Limited. The 40-week project on the home in Lansdowne Road was carried out by J&Z Construction Ltd under the supervision of the company’s own architects, with the four storey building being completely gutted and an extra level of accommodation added in the roof-space. Two stylish shower spaces were created: one designed as a wet room while the other featured a two metre high glass wall set into a floor channel, with a rain head over. J&Z Construction’s interior designers chose products from the Dallmer range to ensure water was removed unobtrusively but effectively from the floor. JIS ADDS NEW RYE TILTING RAIL TO SUSSEX RANGE OF HEATED TOWEL RAILS Taking bathroom elegance and comfort to a new level, JIS Europe Ltd. has launched a new offering under its Sussex Range of heated towel rails. The Rye Tilting Rail has been designed to resemble a sleek, ultra modern ladder, leaning casually and lightly against the wall in a clever design twist. Indeed, the spaced out slats arrangement has negated the old problem of trying to force a plump, fluffy towel between the often too small gaps typical of competing brands while at the same time favouring the minimalist fashion favoured by many interior designers nowadays. The Rye range of towel rails is available in three different heating formats: these being electric only, dual fuel and the ability to be utilized solely with central heating. The rails are also suitable for open plumbing systems. The Goring
The Goring - Reopens Its Doors To Reveal The Final Flourish Of A Major Refurbishment In March 2015, The Goring re-opened its impeccable doors to reveal the final flourish of a major refurbishment: a ravishingly transformed Front Hall, unveiled just in time for the hotel’s 105th birthday. Over the past few years, with a little help from his designer friends including David Linley, Nina Campbell, Tim Gosling and Russell Sage, Jeremy Goring has overseen the top-to-toe renovation of the whole hotel, from the ground floor to each and every guestroom and suite. Even the garden has been relandscaped. The new-look Front Hall and the ground floor is now resplendent with exquisite hand-painted wallpaper by Fromental, whose wallcoverings already grace many of The Goring’s suites and guestrooms. A collaboration between designer Russell Sage, the hotel and Fromental, the result is a charming mix of the relaxed sophistication of a grand English country house – and a dash of idiosyncratic humour that one would expect from The Goring. The whimsical scene, from floor to ceiling, shows an English parkland, but look closer and all is not what it seems. Exotic animals, a walrus, raj elephants, a hippo on a rock, snakes and
a bear, cavort through the landscape. As designer Russell Sage says, “Imagine if all the animals in London Zoo had escaped into Hyde Park… take a closer look and the scene gets curiouser and curiouser…” The artists have also woven The Goring family story into the scenes. A monkey on horseback in full racing silks references George Goring’s love of riding and sports; a sleek seal is a nod to Jeremy Goring’s love of surfing; two imposing walruses, in full jewelled splendour, represent OR Goring and OG Goring, the founder of the hotel and his son. The judge’s wig on the head of the erudite-looking gorilla hails Managing Director David Morgan-Hewitt’s law degree. And, in this most English of hotels, the Lion and the Unicorn, in full heraldic splendour battle it out forever, a discreet reference to Royal Warrant displayed outside the hotel. The wallpaper, which took four artists almost eight weeks to paint, is hand-gilded silver leaf on paper, with the design hand painted in acrylics.
of Georgian Chippendale furniture. A specialist commission of golden Gainsborough Silk adorns the windows, echoing the sumptuousness of the bedrooms and suites upstairs. The entrance to the restaurant has an elegant new look, seamlessly complementing the calm interiors of the Dining Room. The Gentleman’s cloakroom has been refitted in new black and white marble, adding even more comfort and luxury. Jeremy Goring says: “Sorry we had to close, but it was worth it! The whole hotel is gleaming for our 105th birthday and the new Front Hall is gorgeous. It’s what we are all about. Synecore

Synecore’s Bespoke Refrigeration: Serving Commercial Kitchens Across The UK M&E contractor, Synecore has built custom made walk-in cold room suites, blast chilling and freezing facilities, and central production units for some of the busiest commercial kitchens and food retailers in London and across the wider UK. With immense experience in providing commercial refrigeration for restaurants of all sizes, Synecore has developed partnerships with leading brands within the hospitality sector. Five Guys, Malmaison Hotels, Madison, Millennium Foods, Wasabi and Paul Bakery are just a few of the brands to benefit from Synecore’s design and manufacturing expertise. Favoured by restaurants and commercial kitchen contractors, Synecore creates bespoke facilities that are not only functional and practical, but also aesthetically pleasing. There are no perimeters to Synecore’s design and construction capabilities. The team work hard to develop the refrigeration systems that consistently perform well and can be replicated in multiple outlets. “When fulfilling the refrigeration requirements of a commercial kitchens or front of house display units we always inspect the premises first to attain if there is suitable space and if it’s possible to install an external plant,” explains Synecore’s Managing Director, Paul Thomas. “We have a very skilled team of engineers and designers, who solve very complex technical issues
every day, so there a few limitations when it comes to building cold rooms and central production facilities. “With any commercial refrigeration it is crucial it’s well maintained and meets strict Fgas regulations. For our maintenance (PPM) clients, we attend each site to educate the staff on how to avoid needless call outs, such as over stocking, leaving the cold room door open and avoiding incidents where the power supply to a refrigeration cabinet is turned off.” One of Synecore’s most challenging projects was for a meat curing room at SMOAK Restaurant in Manchester, owned by Malmaison Hotels. The curing room was to become a centre piece to the front of house restaurant. It needed to be lit perfectly in order to display the hung meats in an artistic manor, while providing the ideal ambient temperature for curing meat. “Every walk-in cold room we design is bespoke and this project was testament to our ability to follow a very strict design brief,” explains Thomas. “The angles were very tight, however this suited our insulated panel system, which meant we could cut them very accurately and use every inch of space. For display purposes we used heated glass panels that meant there would be no condensation that could potentially reduce the visual effect.”

EMAIL: sales@synecore.co.uk
Synecore worked closely with the interior designers to ensure the design brief was met and the end result was a beautifully crafted glass and zinc-plated cold room. The jaw-dropping focal point has since proven a resounding success among the restaurant staff and its customers. Cold room construction must be completely safe and efficient and a product that Synecore consistently champions is the PIR fire rated panels by KINGSPAN. These LPCB approved panels have exceptional fire ratings and eco credentials, making them a firm favourite among architects and designers. Coupled with an efficient plant, they are ideal for maintaining a consistent temperature in all single and dual compartment cold rooms. Synecore’s all-encompassing mechanical and electrical services are favoured among leading brands within the hospitality sector. Its turnkey solutions for complex central production facilities and display refrigeration units have been commended by clients, who return time and time again. up event. Owing to a wealth of travel throughout Asia, and time spent living in Hong Kong, Matthias has been exposed to a wealth of Asiatic jewelleries and jade objects d’arts. His masterpieces are inspired by his passion and love for Chinese Jade Art Crafts and the refined Art of Asian Jewellery Design. Jade Expressions is a selection of striking and wearable sculptures, with recent works inspired by Matthias’ travels and life in Asia. Each piece is extremely well made, focusing on using original jade pieces, sourced during his travels. He combines the jade pieces with other materials, such as silver and leather, to create modern necklaces, bracelets, rings, belts and other fine accessories for both male and females. Jared Fitzgerald Jared Fitzgerald was born in Seattle, USA and studied painting and classical archaeology at the University
of Washington. As with Matthias, Jared has travelled extensively. Whilst serving in the US Air Force he worked as a still and motion picture photographer which involved frequent travel. After visiting China in 2007, Jared developed several art studios in Beijing and the southern town of Jing de Zhen. In Beijing he produces his paintings and drawings. Conversely, his porcelain work, to be showcased at the exhibition is done in the workshops at the Jing de Zhen site. Each porcelain pot is unique and hand painted. Urban Villa
the World Of Hospitality
Urban Villa Grzywinski+Pons Architects
U
rban Villa is a 100 room hotel in west London. The property is unique in that it is a hybridization of a boutique hotel offering and an aparthotel — two programs that generally are mutually exclusive. Our brief was to bring a design-led bespoke hospitality feel to a product that is traditionally anything but. An even bigger challenge for us was to attempt to do this within a portion of a newly built and largely residential tower (not of our design) that we found to be rather prosaic and sterile. We had to look hard to find any character within the existing environment and, where possible, we tried to peel back the layers that were at odds with our intentions. The first step of our intervention within the existing building was subtractive — revealing structure and services where we could. On the ground floor
we designed the reception to double as a full bar, taking both cues and inspiration from traditional English public houses — pubs — where historically there were rooms to let and the barkeeper doubled as an innkeeper. We chose a palette that is bright and welcoming yet robust and functional — an environment where it felt just as natural to ask for extra towels as it would to order a cocktail. The lobby also hosts a cafe we designed for the same day-to-night mutability. A series of communal tables and more private breakout spaces sit between screens and under ceiling rafts. We wanted to balance the abundant glazing and high ceilings with vertical breaks, warm and authentic materials, lush vegetation and texture. The space, while legible, light washed and convivial, is subtly apportioned into varying degrees of public and private space though void of any walls.
In the guest rooms we had less latitude to reveal the bones of the building so we focused on designing custom furniture and a finish schedule that would be congruent with the aforementioned public spaces. It is also within the rooms that we tried to wed the scope and amenities of an aparthotel with the aspirational feel of a design forward hotel — employing what scope we had to erase, or at least diminish, the palpable legacy of a developer spec residence. The nature and challenges of this commission were unique for us and it is our hope that the spaces that comprise Urban Villa feel quite divergent from those which make up the rest of the building — that we managed to create an atmosphere that belies its shell and injected some heterogeneity into an otherwise uniform environment. www.gp-arch.com

the ritz london
A Short History of The Ritz London The Ritz London opened its doors on 24th May 1906 on the Piccadilly site of the Walsingham House Hotel, formerly the Bath Hotel. Conceived by renowned hotelier César Ritz, The Ritz owes its architectural design to the successful partnership formed in 1900 between Frenchman Charles Mewés and Englishman Arthur Davis. Together they had designed the Hotel Ritz in Paris and the Carlton Hotel in London’s Haymarket (now replaced by New Zealand House) and in 1904 they began The Ritz in London. César Ritz’s innovations for the hotel were, at that time, quite unique with bathrooms for every guestroom, double glazing, a sophisticated ventilation system, and brass, rather than wooden, beds. The first steel framed building of any significance in London, The Ritz was praised for its brilliant refinement of detail and articulation. Large copper lions stand proudly at each corner of the roof while ranks of soaring chimneys and projecting dormers cleverly break the skyline. With its French chateau style architecture and Louis XVI furnishings, the hotel was, according to César Ritz, “a small house to which I am proud to see my name attached”. The interior detail of the hotel is as impressive as its exterior and represents the influence of various Parisian architectural traditions. It was Mewés’ idea to carry out all the interiors in one style with the ground floor dominated by the single Louis XVI theme. The Long Gallery, a vaulted gallery running the length of the building and linking a series of elegant public rooms, was considered a masterpiece in hotel architecture. Unhindered by either dividing doors or
walls, the eye is drawn along the length of the Long Gallery to the far windows of The Ritz Restaurant and through these to The Green Park. The Ritz Restaurant, often described as one of the most beautiful dining rooms in Europe, appears to be permanently ‘en fête’ with its sumptuous chandeliers joined by gilt bronze garlands around the room. Diagonal angles of beautifully carved stone run the Gallery’s length, some opening to give views through to The Palm Court which epitomized the elegantly frivolous comfort of Edwardian high life. The Ritz opened to great acclaim from both the visiting public and the world’s press and was an immediate success. Throughout its 109 year history The Ritz London has attracted the famous and the fashionable. During its early years, the hotel enjoyed the patronage of The Prince of Wales, later to become King Edward VIII, and the English aristocracy. King Alfonso of Spain and Queen Amelie of Portugal met in the hotel; Pavlova, the Russian Prima Ballerina, danced at The Ritz; the Aga Khan and Paul Getty had suites; and Churchill, de Gaulle and Eisenhower met for summit meetings in the Marie Antoinette Suite during the Second World War. The Ritz also became the favourite of Hollywood stars; Charlie Chaplin required 40 policemen to escort him through his fans into the hotel in 1921, Nöel Coward wrote songs at The Ritz and Tallulah Bankhead sipped Champagne from her slipper during a press conference in the 1950s. And The Palm Court was as popular for Afternoon Tea as it is today!
WEBSITE: www.theritzlondon.com
In 1995 The Ritz London was returned to private British ownership when it was bought by Sir David Barclay and Sir Frederick Barclay’s private company Ellerman Investments. Almost immediately, a meticulous and complete refurbishment began on the Grade II * listed building. Fifteen years later The Ritz London has been fully restored with no detail, either in the public areas or behind the scenes, left untouched. In January 2002, The Ritz London received a Royal Warrant for Banqueting and Catering Services. Awarded by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, The Ritz London is the first, and only, hotel to have been honoured with this prestigious award. More recently in November 2006 The Ritz opened William Kent House, also Grade II * listed, which is situated at 22 Arlington Street overlooking The Green Park and adjoining the hotel. Designed in the 1740s by the 18th century architect William Kent, from whom the house now takes its name, the historic mansion was known as Wimborne House when The Ritz opened in 1906. Acquired by the hotel owners in 2005, almost a hundred years after Cesar Ritz first tried to purchase the house and was rebuffed by Lord Wimborne, William Kent House underwent an extensive period of restoration and refurbishment prior to the re-opening of its magnificent new reception rooms. In keeping with the guidelines set down by English Heritage, the exquisite collection of lavishly decorated private dining rooms and residential suites have been retained in their original Italian Renaissance style décor and the majesty of William Kent House is now resplendently reborn.
