Industry News COURTYARD by Marriott receives welcome reception in Glasgow COURTYARD by Marriott has officially checked into Glasgow following a multimillion pound investment by owner Cairn Group and the hotel has already received high acclaim by visitors through its doors. The Brink encourages the North West to go dry for January The Brink is encouraging the North West to cut down on alcohol consumption to coincide with Alcohol Concern’s Dry January initiative.
Since the conversion from its former brand, the Glasgow Airport hotel has seen a soar in positive reviews across social rating websites including TripAdvisor, Booking.com, Expedia and Hotels.com.
and the touch screen GoBoard, enabling guests to view the latest airport arrival and departure information, the most popular tourist attractions and more at their fingertips. Towards the end of 2016 the team hosted an exclusive VIP event to showcase the newlook accommodation, leisure, hospitality and conferencing facilities to local businesses, tourism boards and frequent visitors. Courtyard by Marriott Glasgow Airport general manager, Matthew Hole said: “It’s been fantastic to hear such positive feedback from our guests who have stayed with us and others who have simply come to explore the hotel. We even welcomed the programme director of Robot Wars who was very impressed!
Located on Parr Street, the venue also hosts an eclectic wellbeing programme comprising yoga, singing and gardening to name a few.
The high quality refurbishment which involved all of its 114 bedrooms, reception areas and general public facilities has led to a boost in visitor satisfaction. On TripAdvisor, the average review rating has jumped from 2.5 to 4.4 out of 5 in the last two months.
General Manager of The Brink Carl Bell said: “For those looking to get 2017 off to a healthy start following a perhaps hectic festive party season, the Dry January initiative notes several health benefits including weight-loss, better sleep quality and the opportunity to stay healthier for longer – 65% of those who took part in last year’s Dry January sustained reduced levels of drinking after staying sober for the month.
As a result, the hotel has experienced an uplift in sales almost instantaneously – over 8,000 guests have enjoyed an overnight stay since the rebrand to a Courtyard by Marriott and enquiries have significantly increased, which will help to create job opportunities this year.
“With millions across the UK expected to go ‘dry’ this January, The Brink aims to provide a safe haven whereby guests can stay socialised and entertained throughout the month of January and far beyond. With a focus on recovery and wellbeing, The Brink is committed to offering an alcohol-free environment all year round, with a number of support options available for those who may be struggling with alcohol and addiction.”
Highlights of the Courtyard by Marriott Glasgow Airport design include restaurant and bar venue The Bistro, ‘The Market’ concept offering convenience items around the clock, a brand new fitness facility, conference rooms and a business centre complete with computer terminals.
Detoxing presses and smoothies include ‘Natural Boost’ (pineapple, banana, coconut milk & honey), which can help to increase energy levels the natural way, ‘Inspire’ (pink grapefruit, orange & apple), an excellent source of vitamin c, fibre, potassium & lycopene and ‘Heavenly’ (sweet potato, pear & pineapple), with health benefits including youthful skin and a boost to the immune system. The Brink is also home to a range of regular events and classes focused on recovery, wellbeing and community support.
Technology also plays an important role in the customer journey with media pods
Carl added: “Month on month, The Brink offers a huge variety of events for both the recovery community and the general public alike to enjoy, such as Singing for The Soul, Morning Meditation, Yoga and our newest addition – Garden Club, offering therapeutic exercise and the chance to grow a community that shares different skills, crafts and ideas.
The top 12 were selected from the sectors of Food & Drink, Catering Equipment, Technology and Interiors & Tableware and will be on display in a dedicated area throughout the show (NEC Birmingham 23rd – 25th January) for visitors to experience for themselves.
Crowned ‘Bar of the Year’ at the Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards in 2015, the dry bar and café serves up a range of 130 alcohol-free beverages including mocktails, juices and detoxing presses and smoothies.
“With the increasingly popular Dry January highlighting the beneficial effects of going sober, we hope that the initial break from alcohol will encourage people across the North West to think about their drinking habits to cut down in the long term.”
“Growth will continue to be on our agenda throughout 2017, as we will be nurturing our relationships with the nearby business and residential community, and building on the initial investment made with an exciting new bedroom extension.” The hotel is conveniently located next to the airport and just 15 minutes’ drive from Glasgow city centre, boasting great accessibility with links to motorways and Glasgow Central train station. Furthermore, it sits less than 30 minutes from the shores of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and is just a short distance to stunning sea views and world famous golf courses, making it an ideal base from which to discover more of Scotland.
Shortlist for the Great Product Awards unveiled The Great Hospitality Show has unveiled its shortlist for the Great Product Awards, whittling down scores of entries to just 12 – the most innovative new products in the industry today.
A panel of industry experts will decide on an overall winner who will be announced on the Business Briefing Stage at 4pm on Monday 23rd January. Show Ambassador and Godfather of modern Midlands cooking, Andreas Antona, will be announcing the winner and handing out the spoils. Meanwhile visitors to the show will also be able to have their say in a People’s Choice Award by tweeting their chosen product @HospShow using the hashtag #GreatProductFinalist.

Budget 2017 – new report adds weight to BBPA’s call for cut in beer duty rate
that brewing alone sustains over 100,000 jobs. Nearly 800,000 jobs are supported by over 49,000 pubs across Britain.
Over 898,000 jobs supported by the beer and pub industry, 42 per cent of which are for under 25s £23 billion contribution to the economy in Gross Value Added (GVA) BBPA calls for further beer duty cut in the Budget, to support a vital industry, after securing three cuts in recent years.
Since the last OE report, commissioned by the BBPA in January 2015, the number of jobs supported by the sector has increased by 29,000, whilst capital investment in brewing and pubs has risen to £2 billion, up from £1.2 billion in the previous year. The report also finds that this vital national industry pays an astonishing £12.6 billion in tax, making clear the case for further reductions in the UK’s very high rate of beer duty in the Budget.
A new report by economic experts Oxford Economics (OE), commissioned by the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA), has found that the beer and pub industry in Britain employs almost 900,000 people, and contributes £23.1 billion to the British economy. The BBPA says the figures make clear the case for a further beer duty cut in the Budget on 8th March, to protect jobs and investment in the sector.
The BBPA argues that a further duty cut would help encourage investment, protect jobs and improve confidence in the sector. As Britain prepares for the economic challenges of leaving the European Union, this is more important now than ever, says the BBPA, for a UK industry where 83 per cent of the beer consumed here, is brewed here.
The report demonstrates that the industry brings significant economic benefits to the national economy, with OE data showing Wetherspoon to open 14 bedroom hotel at its Aylesbury pub
In addition the pub is being refurbished as part of the overall project. Each of the 14 bedrooms will feature an ensuite bathroom, flat screen television with Freeview TV and unlimited Wi-Fi, tea and coffee making facilities, as well as digital airconditioning and temperature control.
JD Wetherspoon is opening a 14 bedroom hotel alongside its pub, The Bell Hotel, in Market Square, Aylesbury, on Tuesday January 24. The pub itself will reopen on Saturday January 21.
The Bell Hotel manager Zoe Harrison, said: “We are confident that the hotel will be a great addition to the pub.
It is spending £1.1 million on the development, which will create an additional ten jobs.
“We believe it will also benefit the town itself and hopefully it will act as a catalyst for further investment into Aylesbury.”
The new hotel is being housed within the existing undeveloped areas of the first and second floor of the listed building.

Neo Pizza delivers an extra slice of Italy to NEC Group arenas The NEC Group’s two arena venues, the Genting Arena and Barclaycard Arena, have been given an Italian twist as they boost their pre-show catering offering with two franchise pizzerias. Brought to the Arenas by the NEC Group’s catering arm, Amadeus, the new Neo Pizza outlets – owned by Tugo Food Systems Ltd. – are located in each of the pre-show entertainment and catering areas of Forum Live (Genting Arena) and B(eat) (Barclaycard Arena). The outlets are the latest additions to the Arenas’ ever expanding food and beverage options, and were handpicked by Amadeus due to the quality of the product, cooked fresh on site with premium ingredients. Trading for just over two months, Neo Pizza is proving extremely popular at both arena venues – at the Genting Arena, catering staff sell approximately 100 slices of pizza per hour, or nearly 400 slices of pizza before each show – equalling a total of 9104 inches, or 758 feet. At the Barclaycard Arena, a sell-out show will see staff sell on average 180 slices of pizza per hour. Marc Frankl, Food and Beverage Director for Amadeus, said: “Since the Neo Pizza outlets have opened at the Arenas they have proved phenomenally popular – this is no surprise to us as our food and beverage options are always tailored to suit specific audiences and based on visitor research. We know that before a live arena event, speed of sale is extremely important to customers, but they also don’t want to compromise on quality or flavour. Neo Pizza has strengthened both Arena’s pre-catering offer, adding to the wide range of options already available including Indian, Chinese, Mexican and street food inspired options.” Managing Director of the NEC Group Arenas, Phil Mead added: “We endeavour to provide the ultimate live event experience for our customers, and this incorporates everything from the ticket buying, to the show itself and our facilities within the Arenas. The extensive food and beverage offering we have is a key revenue driver, so it’s also essential that the outlets we select are the best quality possible.” Alan Peel, Sales Director at Tugo Food Systems, said: “TUGO Food Systems Ltd are absolutely delighted to have been chosen to work with Amadeus in the design and implementation our Pizza Neo concept into both the Genting and Barclaycard Arenas. The feedback has been fantastic and we look forward to continuing our good work together.”

The Scarlet Hotel
the World Of Hospitality
The Scarlet Hotel Built to the highest eco-standards, The Scarlet hotel perches on the cliff-tops looking out over the golden sands of Mawgan Porth in North Cornwall. Designed and built by architects Harrison Sutton and builders Bauwerk, the brief was to create a unique and sustainable building that enhanced the local environment, taking advantage of the thrilling cliff top location and sea views to capture a feeling of light and space. The design works around a clever use of levels, to achieve a glimpse of the staggering views from every
angle. A central bronze wall physically anchors the building to the cliff side while the front is the organic faรงade of the building with sea thrift roof and reclaimed groynes. The sensuous use of materials and sympathetic interior design offers an unmistakably Cornish finish that teams with the both the stunning location and natural environs. Visitors enter the reception area and are immediately greeted with a floor to ceiling window overlooking the spectacular indoor swimming pool and breathtaking views down to the sea. Deeply hued sofas and
armchairs welcome weary travellers and the lack of a traditional reception desk gives the hotel a relaxed informality. ACCOMODATION Arranged over 5 levels, the 37 bedrooms are broken down into smaller clusters, so as to dissolve the traditional hotel plan of long corridors and form shorter connecting spaces, some curved in design and moulded to the cliff side. Every room enjoys a balcony overlooking the beach, but some boast their own

gardens, wrap around terraces and shell-like viewing pods. Just right: The majority of the rooms are Just Right, with spectacular sea views and an element of outside space via a balcony or direct access to the gardens. Generous: There are seven Generous rooms, three of which are on the top floor, and four on the middle floor. The seating areas each have a sofa and of course the obligatory sea view.
Unique: Four Unique rooms are accessed via the Cloister Garden. Each has its own private gem garden influenced by some of the great Cornish gardens. They also boast a rooftop lounge or pod accessed via a spiral staircase offering spectacular views from amid the sea thrift. Spacious: As the name suggests, these are a little larger than the standard rooms. Each features a more spacious seating area and of course more staggering views, plus a free standing bath, ideal for a soak after a long day out on the coast.

Indulgent: The most luxurious of all the rooms, these four rooms have outside space either via a balcony, courtyard or a substantial terrace with spectacular cliff top views.

THE SPA The Spa at The Scarlet focuses on complete wellbeing rather than simply skin deep beauty. Guests are welcome to slip into a pair of flip flops and enjoy the quiet, relaxing spaces. The indoor swimming pool offers spectacular views from floor-to-ceiling windows and the outdoor Natural Pool is free from chemicals and uses a living reed bed as a filtration system, where micro-organisms and plants balance the chemistry of the water ensuring clean and clear conditions for an exhilarating fresh water swimming experience. And if the outside pool is a little too fresh, there are two wonderful cliff top hot tubs nestled nearby, where you can warm up and take in the views. In the spa guests can experience one of seven Journeys , which start with an individual Ayurvedic diagnosis with one of The Scarlet’s therapists in a soft tented treatment room. All products used are 100% organic and therapists use Tri-Dosha and Voya products, as well at fresh seaweed. They have also developed their own range of natural products using local ingredients including sea salt, Cornish clay and locally grown indigenous herbs. These have been blended together by Richard Howard at Arcania Apothecary to create a number of products used within the therapies.
After treatment, guests are welcome to use the Deep Relaxation Room, where pod-like hammocks swing gently from the roof, or perhaps enjoy a green tea on the vast Relaxation Terrace, watching the ebb and flow of the tide. DINING To the right of reception the stairs lead down to the violet and purple tones of the bar, where guests can enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif, a light snack or perhaps a delicious traditional Cornish cream tea. Headed up by Chef, Tom Hunter, the restaurant serves sophisticated, robust food that is surprising but never pretentious. Tom’s menus are simple yet bursting with flavour, changing daily to ensure that full use is made of what is local and at its seasonal best, whilst remaining reasonably priced. The wine list includes plenty of unusual choices available by both the bottle and the glass, with selections made daily to complement the menu. When the weather permits alfresco dining is available on the terrace and the hotel can arrange picnic hampers for those who wish to explore the bay. After dinner guests are welcome to use the Library, where they can sink into one of the deeply filled sofas
with a night cap, or perhaps a game on the purple snooker table. ECO-CHIC The team at The Scarlet are passionate about sustainability and, from the outset, have employed a wealth of eco initiatives: Grey water harvesting Grey water gets its name from its cloudy appearance and from being neither fresh (white water from groundwater or potable water), nor heavily polluted (black water). At The Scarlet, grey water comprises the wastewater from guest showers and baths; it is then treated and recycled to flush toilets. The biggest advantage of recycling the grey water is that it reduces the consumption of, and reliance on potable water. Rain water harvesting Rainwater harvesting is the gathering, or accumulating and storing, of rainwater. The Scarlet uses collected rainwater to top up the natural pool, to irrigate the sea thrift roofing, to wash cars and to provide rinsing and washing facilities for wetsuits and outdoor kit.
The Scarlet Hotel
Biomass boiler Biomass boilers are generally fired on wood biomass, rather than gas, coal or oil products. Biomass is classed as a renewable energy source and is considered carbon neutral. The Scarlet’s biomass boiler is fired on wood chips (a recycled waste product of a local company) and produces hot water for bathrooms, kitchens and for heating the hotel. Evacuated tube solar water heating (solar panels) The Scarlet’s thermal solar panels harness the sun’s energy, using an evacuated tube system, to heat water for the indoor pool. The advantage of using evacuated tubes is that, unlike old style flat plate panels, they work even during the coldest seasons. The vacuum prevents the tube from being cooled too much by the ambient temperature which means that even a winter sun can easily heat water to over 50 degrees.
is an integral part of achieving thermal energy efficiency in a building such as The Scarlet; by building air tight they have reduced both the amount of cold air leaking in and warm air leaking out, thus reducing the amount of input required from our biomass boiler and solar panels.
9
Scarlet uses a system by which fresh air is drawn in from outside through vents near the ceilings of each room, an air-to-air heat exchanger then warms the fresh air using heat from the stale air that is being expelled. CO2 emissions
Insulation Along with rigid hardboard insulation, used for its lightweight, durable and superior thermal insulation properties, The Scarlet uses mineral wool insulation. Mineral Wool is made up of a mix of recycled steel slag and basalt rock. The mix is usually at least 75% steel slag and 25% basalt rock, but in some cases almost 100% steel slag is used. Mineral wools are recyclable and have the added advantage of being fireproof; they are also durable and have a natural resistance to rot. The combination of insulation materials ensures that temperatures can be carefully regulated as heat loss is at a minimum.
Air tightness Ventilation heat exchange In a timber frame building an air tight seal can be created by securing membranes inside the external walls and roof space and by taping joints. Air Tightness
the World Of Hospitality
Buildings require some sort of internal system to circulate air, preventing the build-up of stale air. The
The Building CO2 Emission Rate (BER) for The Scarlet is calculated as 73% less than that of a notional building of the same size, design and geometry. Natural pool Replacing the need for polluting chemicals, The Scarlet’s natural pool uses a living reed bed as a filtration system; microorganisms and plants will balance the chemistry of the water ensuring clean and clear conditions for an exhilarating outdoor, fresh water swimming experience. Having a chemical free, fresh water pool planted with flora in keeping with the natural surroundings encourages high level of biodiversity.

Sea thrift roof
High use of recyclable and recycled materials
The complex green roof system uses a multitude of layers to compensate for the functions of the missing ground and guarantees a durable plant covering that reduces the heating and cooling loads of the hotel through its insulating properties.
The Scarlet has been constructed with its potential deconstruction in mind; the wood used for the main building frame, the aluminium roof, the copper cladding, the thrift roof membrane can all be recycled should the hotel ever need substantial refurbishment.
The Scarlet’s roof is planted with native Sea Thrift, a plant which naturally occurs along North Cornwall’s cliff tops, and which helps the building to merge with its coastal surroundings and provide an additional wildlife habitat for insects and butterflies.
During the construction phase companies that actively aim to reduce waste or to recycle waste product have
Reptile re-homing As they cleared the site prior to the construction phase, piece by piece, the team also undertook a destructive search whereby they took the Cornish hedges and walls apart, stone by stone removing the reptile population - In that time they caught nearly 120 slow worms, lizards and two small adders, all of which have been re-homed locally in one of the directors gardens!

been selected, i.e. plaster board off cuts are sent back to the company to be reused in the manufacture or more plaster board and the cement is made from waste material from china clay production. Even the site hut was created so that it recycles rain water to flush the toilet and can be completely dismantled and re-erected at the construction company’s next location!

Make Omni-Channel a Reality with Star Omni-channel retailing has been a reality for a number of years. It has, however, had to redefine itself in order to provide a seamless customer experience across a number of channels. The same applies to the hospitality industry. To satisfy the demands of today’s techsavvy guests who expect information at their fingertips across any device, at any time, whether they are online or not, operators need to embrace cloudbased technology. Furthermore, these guests are seeking not just a product or service but an engaging experience. Omni-channel involves the delivery of a seamless, integrated, and consistent guest experience irrespective of the channel or device. As customers increasingly demand more for less, operators need to find new and innovative ways to compete on experience. Ensuring that the ordering and payment experience for the customer is consistent across all channels whether the customer is using a kiosk, website, an app, a call centre, a drive-thru or ordering in person is key. Providing a unified approach to ordering and payment can, however, prove challenging. By making the move towards cloudbased POS solutions, hospitality is able to make omni-channel a reality.
Star offers a number of cloud solutions with a range of cable-free WiFi and Bluetooth fixed and mobile POS printing solutions - the TSP654IIBI Bluetooth printer from Star provides a unique, high speed 300mm/second entry-level solution with multiple connectivity options for traditional systems or an upgrade path to cloudbased systems. WA International
The Westin Inspiration was found in the pioneering soul that is nature, The Westin Hotel’s have their concept originating in the North West of America, The Rocky Mountains. The designers however localized this concept by looking toward the Al Hajjar Mountain for inspiration.
Layered to the concept, WA International found the ideals of design inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright, America’s far reaching architect who displayed great visionary in his works and who always used nature as the source of his inspiration. Frank’s philosophy translates perfectly into the Westin’s design philosophy,
The Al Hajjar Mountains border the UAE and Oman and are the highest mountain range in the Eastern Arabian Peninsula. They separate the low coastal plain of Oman from the high desert plateau of the UAE.
“Organic manifested in a refined probing sensitivity to the environment, sustainability and the sensible use of space”
In Arabic “Al” means “the” and “Hajjar” means “stone” or “rock”, therefore the interpretation of AL Hajjar, is, The Rocky Mountains. Made of cretaceous limestone and amphibolites, richly ruggered and textured with plentiful plant life as compared to the rest of Arabia, the mountains also boast a number of bird species. With this WA International dived into the concept. Peaceful and harmonious patterns transcend into the interior displaying a rich and energizing experience, leaving the guests with a sense of calm, both mentally and spiritually, an enhanced sense of well being that one can only get from nature. The Westin guest becomes the centre of this landscape with the belief that life should be lived to the fullest with a passion for both work and travel.
Frank Lloyd Wright believed that structures should be in harmony with humanity and the environment, a philosophy he called Organic Architecture. It was also during this time that the Art Deco movement become popular. With this, WA International married the two to create something unique, refined with a timeless harmony. Elements of nature as seen in the oversized pots with lush greenery in the entry create a calm and soothing atmosphere. The colour palette is neutral and tonal with sensitive colours inspired by nature. WA International used turquoise to break up the palette. Materials are natural, warm and textured, creating a layered effect that makes for a comfortable hotel interior.
Website: www.wa-international.com
Stoneworks to the Public areas column cladding and flooring are complimented by the dark and rich timber ceiling. Metallic stylized Art Deco screens, back lit onyx and light fixtures all display the glamour of the 1920’s era. Original, abstract artworks behind the reception desks where commissioned locally, and are a representation of the Al Hajjar Mountains and wadis. The timber staircase with pale grey marble treads and a geometric Art Deco patterned balustrade make this staircase a unique feature. Alongside the staircase is a serious of 12 original charcoal sketches of the wadis which link the concept back to nature. The guestrooms too showcase a classic & glamorous style with a timeless quality. Art Deco patterns, as seen in the etched glass screens, carpet designs and light fixtures are elegant & refined. Rich eco sensitive colours & textures in fabrics, embossed leather, rich timbers & veneers all create the layers to the interiors. Again the designers worked with a neutral colour palette, subtle accents of mauve hues and blue provide a colour pop to the scheme. Quite frankly who wouldn’t want to submerge themselves in this beautiful interior with exquisite views of the canal, this hotel is more than a hotel it is an experience.

2017 Design Trends It’s important to get drinks, food and service right – but what about the décor? Here are some of the upcoming interior trends we think will be changing your space in 2017; some small, some big, all worthy of your attention. Clean and simple There’s plenty of ‘back to basics’ bar talk right now, whether that’s dropping the complex cocktails or focussing on seasonal ingredients. It looks set to influence design too, with organic-looking chairs, white and grey furniture and a general embrace of neutrals coming to the fore.
Other cultures
Outdoors in
For 2017 Japanese, Scandi, Jamaican and Hawaiian Tiki drinks are forecast to be big, and it’s easy to get the former look with clean glass lighting and contrasting, simple materials like plastic against pale wood or concrete against glass or marble.
Summer 2017 looks set to see more venues combining their in and outdoor spaces. Items like hard-wearing plastic seating and tables make it possible and get the most of those awkward outdoor spaces and pavements too.
Colour burst After the ubiquitous dirty, washed-out colour palette, we’re seeing venues lift spirits with bold colours. Rather than painting walls, an easy and affordable way to do this is via smaller items like chairs and stools.

Awards Successes For Lake District Hotel Project The Gilpin Hotel and Lake House in the Lake District is celebrating a raft of awards after scooping a number of prestigious accolades for its Spa Lodges which opened earlier this year. Interior Designer Sarah Jane Nielsen has attracted recognition for her work on this stunnning and innovative project with prizes being presented in the past month in the prestigious UK Property Awards (Hotel Interior Design) and in the Northern Design Awards (Residential Interior Design). Architect Ben Cunliffe also secured awards for his Spa Lodge designs, winning the Best Leisure Architecture category in the UK Property Awards and the Best Commercial Build category at the NDA.
The Gilpin Spa Lodge scheme, which nestles in the hotel’s private grounds near Lake Windermere, is a new addition to this fine Relais and Chateaux boutique hotel and comprises five individuallydesigned detached timber cabins, each with luxury accommodation and its own treatment area, steam room, rain maker shower, free standing oval bath, sauna and hot tub.
Concepts for each interior were inspired by Sarah’s own global travels and represent different stages of her own journey, with themes taken from her Scandinavian roots and time spent in the Middle East, America and North Africa.
The interiors are attracting glowing reviews from delighted guests and Sarah, whose studio is based

has its own distinct personality providing discerning guests with a choice of décor according to personal preference and an interesting option of selecting a totally different experience for their next visit. Internally, each has a large bedroom and a distinct lounge space, both designed to take advantage of the stunning views. A convertible spa area has been incorporated into each lodge with treatment beds stowable out of sight in the wardrobe area. Bathrooms are divided into two distinct areas, separating the spa with sauna and hot tub from traditional bathroom facilities. The ultimate result overall has been the provision of a fully immersive guest experience.
She explains, “Inspired by the heritage of the area and the pedigree of the Gilpin Hotel, we set out to create five exclusive lodges that would soothe mind, body and soul. Whatever the season or weather, the Gilpin Spa Lodges sit comfortably within their environment and guests leave with a feeling of wellbeing. The Spa Lodges have for us been an interesting and rewarding project and we took great pleasure at arriving at solutions which we believe to be both beautiful and practical.”

Macdonald Resorts Strikes Gold Again For the second year in a row, Macdonald Hotels & Resorts has again been awarded Gold Crown status for eight of its resorts by the world’s leading provider of holiday exchange services – RCI. The RCI Gold Crown rating is RCI’s highest accolade for resort quality and is largely based on the feedback and comments from the thousands of RCI members who, at RCI’s invitation, complete an RCI Welcome Home comment card on return from their RCI exchange holidays. The RCI Gold Crown awards were presented to its four Spanish resorts; La Ermita, Dona Lola, Leila Playa, Villacana, Spain; The Macdonald Elmers Court Hotel & Resort in the New Forest, UK; Macdonald Plas Talgarth Holiday Resort in the Snowdonia National Park in Wales; the Macdonald Forest Hills Hotel & Spa in the Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park, and the Macdonald Spey Valley Golf & Country Club in Aviemore, both in Scotland, rounding out Macdonald’s RCI Gold Crown winners. Macdonald Lochanhully Woodland Club in Scotland’s Cairngorm National Park also secured RCI Silver Crown status for the second year.
In addition to member feedback, other criteria taken into consideration when awarding RCI Gold Crown status to a resort are that it meets RCI’s exacting standards in areas such as housekeeping, maintenance, hospitality service levels, and check-in/check-out efficiencies, as well as satisfying an evaluation of onresort guest facilities, amenities and services. Simon Jackson, CEO of Macdonald Resorts, said: “It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our teams that they have secured the much-coveted RCI Gold Crown award for a second time. “We are visited by thousands of guests throughout all our resorts and we aim to delight each of them. To have had such positive feedback from RCI guests and our local RCI services manager recognises the efforts that staff in all our resorts go to, both in the UK and Spain, to give guests the warmest welcome, great food and the attention with which the Macdonald brand has become synonymous.” RCI has more than 40 years’ experience in supporting staff at its affiliated resorts in the day-to-day resort operations, as well as helping more than a million
families to get away on exchange holidays each year. The RCI member community now numbers 3.8 million timeshare owners worldwide, with more than 4,000 resorts affiliated to its holiday exchange programme in over 100 countries. Dimitris Manikis, VP, Business Development, RCI Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: “Delivering a quality holiday experience to our members lies at the heart of our core purpose and promise. It means everything to RCI to know that our members can be assured they will enjoy a consistent quality across the resorts we send them to and for that reason we applaud and congratulate Macdonald Resorts for investing in providing a guest experience that both meets and exceeds the expectations of our members, as is evident from the feedback we have received from those visiting these deserving resorts.” Macdonald Hotels & Resorts is privately owned and has been offering guests fine hospitality options for 25 years. It operates over 40 hotels across the UK and has resorts in the UK, Spain and Portugal.

Hotel Flottant
the World Of Hospitality
Hotel Flottant Volume and Integration. A piece of Paris on the Seine. The integration of OFF Paris Seine in its environment comes first by the very Parisian expression it proposes. The hotel merges with the city via its right and left banks and the twin hulls of the hotel itself, the river Seine that splits the city, its zinc roofs, and the multiplicity of its services. In many ways OFF Paris is like a floating fragment of the city itself. An uncluttered and elegant design. OFF Paris Seine presents a simple and uncluttered architecture based on twin hulls strongly connected together, on which two levels of modules are superimposed. The floating facility adopts a discrete line since it respects the regulatory height of 6 m from the water line in order to preserve views on the river. Elegant zinc roofs open facades outward while a central glass roof lets natural light enter at the heart of the building. Transparency. Despite its imposing size (75m x 18m), the OFF fits perfectly into its environment. If public areas’ facades celebrate volumes’ transparency and
minimize screen effect, those dedicated to the hotel’s present a silver-woody coating that naturally mingle with the urban riverbanks background. The shutters, treated in discontinuity, give the facades some relief and vibration. To preserve the Austerlitz Viaduct. The more we move towards the Austerlitz Viaduct (historical monument), the more spaces become public and transparent. The aft of the building is composed of a terrace built just above the water line, forming a balcony onto the river, and two marina pontoons allow smaller boats to moor alongside. From the swimming pool, the pool’s water line merges with the river, giving an unprecedented view on the Seine and surroundings. Interior Design. Spatial treatment. On board, all spaces are directly and clearly identifiable by clients. The fluidity of circulation corroborates this dimension. Four gangways enable to organize entries, exits - for customers and suppliers – and give access to different floors and locations in the facility.
River experience. Crossed by the river as Paris is crossed by the Seine, the water is the building’s backbone. Everything has been thought to make the river experience as authentic as possible: the flexibility of the hulls’ articulation to maintain the natural rocking movement, the generous perspectives on the Seine it delivers, the hotel’s projection to 10 m from the riverbanks thanks to gangways, the first floor level designed just above the water line, the port’s integration at the aft. In the evening, the permanent relationship between the facility and the water is magnified by the lighting design work of Franck Franjou. Style & Materials. The style is globally sober, far away from fads, giving to the building a certain timelessness. We choose noble and sustainable materials to do so: mostly wood, copper, leather, glass and zinc. The colors are mainly copper and hot.

Great Hospitality Show 2017 The UK’s largest exhibition for foodservice and hospitality returns this January with a brand new name and a remit of celebrating greatness in our industry.
heart of the show floor – The Business Briefing Stage – is set to welcome a host of debates and discussions on topics setting the hospitality agenda.
Elsewhere, the show is set to crown the industry’s ten best new products giving visitors an enticing first-look at the innovations set to make waves in 2017.
Welcome to the Great Hospitality Show (NEC Birmingham, 23rd – 25th January 2017).
Just some of the highlights include: holder of two Michelin-stars, Tom Aikens, who will be joined by founder of the World Gourmet Society, Matthias Tesi Baur, to discuss what it takes to reach the very pinnacle of the profession.
Submissions into the Great Product Awards are already open with Great Hospitality Show exhibitors –hundreds of hospitality’s most industrious innovators in the fields of Catering Equipment, Technology, Food & Drink and Design – entering new products.
The Brexit effect and skills shortage will also be up for debate with Great Hospitality Show Ambassador, Cyrus Todiwala, MBE, leading a panel of industry experts including, People 1st Executive Director, Martin-Christian Kent and Chief Executive of the Institute of Hospitality, Peter Ducker.
By the time the show opens, the submissions will be whittled down to a shortlist of ten with each product on display in a dedicated area throughout the three-day show for visitors to experience for themselves.
This time around, the show is strengthened by a team of dedicated Ambassadors, representing the many facets of the industry-at-large. Sally Beck, GM of London’s Lancaster Hotel and a passionate champion of young talent in the industry, joins highly respected chef and champion of kitchen skills Cyrus Todiwala OBE; Michelin-starred restaurateur, Andreas Antona and Mike Coldicott, director of kitchen design pioneers, Tricon. Each will be involved in passionate debates and events in and around the show throughout the three days. Now in its fourth rotation, the Great Hospitality Show’s highly successful business mentor programme also returns to help show visitors with a host of challenges including, menu development, PR & marketing, staff motivation, revenue management, technology, design & branding, kitchen management, legal and skills and development. Elsewhere, in a Great Hospitality Show coup, one of the UK’s most admired and yet most enigmatic hoteliers, Ken McCulloch, will be discussing his long and illustrious career as creator of One Devonshire Gardens and the world famous Malmaison. Exciting new elements will join old favourites in creating a serious buzz on the show floor. The one and only Salon Culinaire returns bigger and better with new elements such as the Skills Theatre – which will see students undertake a number of key back and front-of-house challenges. New faces join old heads for a different take on La Parade des Chefs – the chef team challenge – which will see junior brigades of competitors aged 23 or under, overseen by a senior head chef, tasked with preparing a three-course lunch menu for 100 covers in the Bonnet kitchen. Another exciting new element, The PS100 Culinary Showcase, will demonstrate the impressive culinary skills within the public sector. Chefs and cooks will have one hour to produce a main course and a dessert using the same key ingredients, but will be constrained by both the budgets and nutritional guidelines faced in their own particular areas of work.

An overall winner will then be selected by an esteemed panel of judges and announced on the Business Briefing Stage at 4pm on Monday 23rd January. Show visitors will also be able to have their say in a very special People’s Choice accolade – decided via a Twitter vote. With new products in mind, and the New Year ushering in a key period for catering equipment buyers, the show is set to tantalise visitors throughout its three days with hundreds of the very latest catering equipment innovations, under one roof. In 2017, the Great Hospitality Show floor will be packed with more catering equipment suppliers than any other event. January will also mark the very first outing for many of the innovative new products. chantelle lighting
Innovative Lighting Stuns The Hospitality Industry Chantelle Lighting is shaping the hospitality industry in terms of creating and manufacturing stunning lighting products. The company was born some two and a half decades ago, as Anthony Holly, managing director, focused on a vision to offer a personal service from inception, through to implementation and completion.
An experienced quotations team ensure all requirements are fully understood, including lighting preferences and budget. An in-house technical draughtsman provides technical drawings throughout the life of every contract to assist designers and on-site electricians and project co-ordinators are on hand to manage the project from quotations stage through to completion.
Chantelle Lighting is approached regularly with requests for the relatively straightforward, to the weird and wonderful and every project undertaken is done so with commitment, creativity and a desire to produce the very best product for every customer.
Clients are able to visit throughout the manufacturing process, enabling them to watch as their designs are transformed and brought to life. And all deliveries are made in a specially adapted van, to ensure that the light fittings reach clients in perfect condition.
Manufacturing products from its home in Lancashire is at the forefront of the business; the factory floor boasts knowledgeable and skilful craftsmen and women who understand exactly how to create both high end, innovative products, and also more simple products which can easily be produced on a large scale to accommodate different needs.
Over the past two decades Chantelle has completed work for some of the largest brands in the UK, including The Befry Hotel, The Village Group Hotel, Macdonald Hotels, the Midland Hotel, plus bars across the country including The Botanist, Bar & Beyond, Radisson Blu and Charlie Club in Mayfair.
Website: www.chantellelighting.co.uk
Taking a brief and transforming these ideas into reality is a skill which Chantelle takes seriously; a project at Charlie Club in Mayfair saw Chantelle create and manufacture two huge LED ring pendants with colour changing panels which connect to the venue’s music system to create a unique atmosphere for visitors to the club. Anthony Holly, managing director said: “With over 27 years’ experience in the lighting industry, our team of experts understand exactly what is required to bring a design brief to life. “Our wide variety of products work wonderfully within the hospitality industry, adding ambience and creating a certain mood within a room. And our bespoke light fittings are great for designers who have an idea in mind and want to create this from scratch. “Whatever the project, we are fully committed to offering high end products, but also a high end service to ensure the customer’s needs are met and the lighting transforms a room, as it should.”

led eco lights
LED – The Brighter Alternative To Incandescent Lighting Saima Shafi, Co-Founder of LED lighting specialist LED Eco Lights, offers a view on why LED filament lamps offer many advantages over traditional incandescent light bulbs. For almost 150 years, the incandescent light bulb has been shining bright to provide a reliable and effective means of illumination for millions of homes, hotels and businesses. Originally invented in parallel by Sir Joseph Swan (UK) and Thomas Edison (USA) as the world’s first electric light bulb, it comprises a filament wire with an electric current running through it, which heats the wire to a high temperature until it glows, producing light or incandescence. Incandescent bulbs are manufactured in a range of wattages, shapes and sizes and have been very well adopted in household and commercial lighting for more than a century. Their widespread universal usage was based on good performance, reliability and the lack of any better alternative. However, during the last few years, the industrial interiors trend has really taken off utilising vintage, reclaimed or retro inspired furniture and fittings. This popularity has been achieved by suppliers restoring them to their former glory, paying particular attention to surfaces, finishes, unique quirks and original imperfections, and bringing them all together to showcase design creativity. It’s no surprise that vintage lighting has had a similar resurgence, particularly to complement retro interiors, and this had led to the interest in incandescent lighting being re-ignited. This time however, with the advent of modern lighting technology and its most used buzzword in the last decade, LED has rapidly become a definite game changer. With the arrival of LED filament technology, there are some major shifts in the way we are lighting our interiors and, now that an alternative has been developed, we take a look at the way our lighting nostalgic or not - is evolving for the better. Performance LED Lighting has been around for a little longer than a decade in commercially viable options. Significantly, even during the last year, continual development and technological advances have seen an enormous leap from its early performance to delivering a range of white colour temperatures. This is in stark contrast to the warm and cosy ambient light so appealing and unique to incandescent lamps. We are now able to see a range of colour temperatures being accurately mimicked in LED, particularly with the advent of LED filament lamps, which are able to recreate the familiar warm glow that was previously the sole
domain of traditional incandescent bulbs. Not only does the latest generation of LED filament lamps replicate the traditional lighting ambience, it also delivers two critical improvements –a ten times longer lifespan whilst providing staggering energy savings of up to 85%. Add to this the ability of LED filament lamps to achieve any colour temperature with clearer, brighter and dimmable light output and it’s easy to see why designers, architects, and shopfitters are rapidly embracing the versatility offered by this new LED technology. Technology To better explain the performance characteristics of LED filament lamps, it is wise to consider the technological features and advantages. LED filament lamps incorporate all the design-favoured aesthetics, the warm glow given off by the lamp, beautifully encased in glass covers – which add a reflectional dimension with vintage brass lamp holders. In essence, it is the re-creation of a classic. One could argue that only a discerning lighting buyer would notice that the filament light source is not traditional but a cutting-edge modern LED equivalent. Reliability Incandescent lamps have been relied upon in numerous applications for decades. One of their most favoured environments for installation is that of hospitality interiors including pubs, bars, restaurants, cafes and hotels plus a handful of retail outlets. However, with no viable alternative in the past, we have learned to accept the high temperatures generated from these lamps, as well as their unreliability and frequent failure. Where they are installed in high volume, it is common to find lamps being blown, not working and requiring constant lamp swap outs. Indeed the high operating heat of the wire filaments is one of the main culprits. By contrast, technologically advanced LED filaments suffer none of these problems, and are proven to offer a lifespan of up to ten times that of incandescent filaments. The average lifespan of an incandescent bulb is around 2,000 hours compared to 20,000 hours or more of its LED equivalent. Energy Saving There is certainly a huge energy saving benefit to replacing energy hungry incandescent lamps with LED lamps. A standard incandescent filament lamp
Website: www.brightgoods.co.uk
would consume 60 watts, for example. Its LED rival would use a mere 6W in comparison, to provide an equivalent light output. To demonstrate the point, we like to say that the cheapest kilowatt is the one you don’t use – by dropping 54W you are saving 90% on the energy consumption. This really starts becoming crucial, where these lamps are installed en masse and, in a single installation of 100 lamps – typical across a 100-seater restaurant - then this saving would become very important to the business owner or bill payer. These incredible savings then translate into extremely short payback times, so the argument to consider LED filament lamps is compelling. Added to the fantastic energy savings, a similar level of carbon is saved thereby ensuring a valuable contribution to protecting the environment. Cost It’s true to say that the cost of raw materials used in all manufacturing scenarios falls in line with increased production volumes. This relationship is particularly true in new technologies such as LED lighting where, as more users adopt the technology, the pricing improves. Furthermore, the combination of lower purchasing prices with dramatically reduced energy and maintenance costs, frequently results in extremely short payback periods. Guarantee Reputable manufacturers will be keen to show existing LED filament installations to potential customers and provide comprehensive details of energy and carbon savings for comparison against those featuring traditional incandescent lighting. Furthermore, the same manufacturers should also offer genuine guarantees for their products that are unmatchable by producers of traditional incandescent lamps.

'If people notice the lighting then you've got it wrong' This was the observation made by Graham Clark, Design Director at Grove Developments, the company behind the prestigious InterContinental London – The O2, that opened last year adjacent to The O2 arena. He continued; "The important thing is that the lighting acts in support of the overall design of the hotel," and this has certainly been achieved in this luxury venue. All the front of house light fittings, from the reception area, corridors and meeting rooms through to Eighteen, The Spa and the enormous pillar-free Arora Ballroom, (area 3,200 sq metres) are LED, delivering not only great flexibility but also high levels of reliability and excellent energy efficiency. The project was designed by Aecom of St Albans and LDI, London, who worked closely with Century Lighting, the company responsible for the installation of over 600 Tridonic LED drivers and boards that were required to complete the project. www.tridonic.com Email: simon.blazey@tridonic.com tel: 01256 374304

A dynamic facade The building stretches along the length of the site but its façade has been designed as a rhythm of elements broken by only two folds which announce the main entrance to the hotel and the location of the restaurant. Ribbons of metal that run all around the building otherwise highlight its horizontality. Panels of warmly coloured vertical glazing– brown, bronze, and grey – give the building an elegant, yet calm, character. The northern façade of the hotel reads as a sequence of planes which change in their appearance according ones particular viewpoint and also with the changing natural light.

A sequence of surroundings The ground floor is a unique and open space featuring the main reception, restaurant, lounge bar, and conference facilities. The different activities function independently of the main hotel and allow it to have a life all through the year. The decor of the different spaces are distinguished by their own particular atmosphere: In the reception area, a large kinetic sculpture commissioned from the artist Charles Morgan and inspired by Chaplin’s lm “Modern Times” adds metallic touches to a colour palette which is predominantly black and white; in the conference rooms, an elegant floor of solid oak; fresh and lively colours of purples, oranges, and blues give the lounge bar the feeling of a New York speakeasy; the restaurant features Versailles parquet flooring and its atmosphere is more intimate with large lamps illuminating a softer palette of beige and grey punctuated by blues and greens.

The Edinburgh Grand’s banking hall is rich in history, both for the capital and Scotland as a whole, and by carefully retaining and restoring the many original features we will bring this heritage to life. Our luxury restaurant and bar offering will have a Scottish influence at its heart and will make a significant contribution to Edinburgh’s vibrant food and drink scene.” Chris Stewart, CEO of award-winning real estate company Chris Stewart Group commented: “The ambition The DRG has for the space both in terms of design and quality offering is a perfect fit for The Registers, and we are delighted to welcome them as tenants. The building at 42 St Andrew Square is

magnificent and as home to The Edinburgh Grand serviced apartments and now The DRG flagship restaurant, it will create a huge draw to this part of Edinburgh’s City Centre. With a new pedestrianised area and public spaces, we are rejuvenating a once neglected area to make something special.” The DRG owned by Tony Conetta and Mario Gizzi operates restaurants under the Di Maggio’s Café Andaluz, Amarone, Atlantic Brasserie, Barolo, Cadiz and The Anchorline brands. The group previously undertook a significant refurbishment in an historic building with its £1.5m development of The Anchorline. The former ticket office of the Anchor Shipping Line in Glasgow’s Vincent Place has been transformed into a premium restaurant and bar and has brought to life the history of this location where first class passengers booked voyages to destinations including New York, India and Pakistan. The DRG will begin works at The Registers in October 2017.

Qmotion Uk
Qmotion Uk Launches Qis – Cool, Hassle-Free Automatic Blind Control For Hotels QMotion UK has introduced QiS, a simple to install, wireless solution for controlling motorised roller blinds in boutique hotel bedrooms, meeting rooms and banqueting areas. This breakthrough product is attractive, easy to operate and, unlike other automated blinds, allows for manual adjustment by users, without the risk of causing any damage to the mechanism. “Smart blind control technology is becoming increasingly popular in the hospitality industry,” comments Ian Claxton, Director at QMotion UK. “It’s a perfect fit for the cool ‘wow factor’ aesthetic of the boutique hotel. The QMotion QiS solution can be installed as a new or retrofit upgrade to guest room and public spaces and is versatile and robust enough to handle manual operation, where users may be unfamiliar or unaware of the automated option.” With QiS, users benefit from enhanced communication consistency, due to built-in signal collision avoidance over the self-healing ZigBee
mesh network. Multiple blinds can be easily grouped and automated to raise and lower to four selected, programmable positions in unison. QMotion UK shades allow guests to open or close their shades at a touch of a button, or via their personal mobile devices using the QMotion IoS or Android app, from the comfort of their bed or anywhere in the room. Built with automatic safety braking, the blinds never pass completely over the top of the roller when rising providing carefree blind control. QMotion’s patented manual-override command allows users to operate the blinds by hand, where required, without damaging the automated mechanism. This feature is ideal for hotels where guests tend to interact with shades directly, bringing a new level of convenience to shade control. Aesthetics are also important. QMotion roller shade brackets are the industry’s thinnest, guaranteeing a sleek shading system for any hotel room where
design integrity is important. This also reduces the side light gaps to 13mm on each side for optimum room shading performance. A full range of high quality fabric design and colour options are available, including a bespoke service, enabling QMotion UK to meet any hospitality design or branding requirements. QMotion UK blinds are also ultra-energy efficient thanks to the company’s patented springcounterbalancing system which keeps motor power consumption to an absolute minimum and delivers near silent operation in every application for great customer experience. The gap in the app market for cloud-based mobile ordering Room service mobile ordering isn’t a new concept, but the associated barriers of complicated technology, significant capital expenditure and high maintenance have, unsurprisingly, restricted uptake by hoteliers and guests alike. However, there is no ignoring the growing need for service at our fingertips. Apps have their place in the market, but this is arguable when it comes to in-room ordering. Once you’ve spent huge amounts of time and money on the development of an app, you rely on your guests downloading it, which means competing for storage space amongst a host of entertainment, lifestyle, utility and social networking apps. The industry has been telling us it’s time for an alternative and stepping up to challenge is the awardwinning software company, Wi-Q Technologies, with the introduction of Mi-Room; the first fully scalable cloud-based ordering and payment solution for guest room services. Accessed via any internet-enabled device, Mi-Room makes hotel services instantly accessible from
guests’ own mobile phones, tablets or laptops. From ordering food and drink or booking spa treatments to requesting a toothbrush or arranging excursions to local attractions, Mi-Room provides a seamless platform to upsell a full range of services around the clock, whilst improving customer experience. Graham Cornhill, Managing Director and founder of Wi-Q Technologies, explained how the idea of Mi-Room stemmed from demand: “Following the launch of Wi-Q, our cloud-based ordering system that has been implemented in restaurants worldwide, a London hotel group expressed a need for our technology to enhance the guest room services of their hotels. Through targeted research, it quickly became apparent that they weren’t alone, so we started developing software specifically for that purpose.” Mi-Room has been fine-tuned by working closely with the hotel sector and its current software providers to deliver a whole product. Graham continued, “We had the foundations with the technology, but we wanted to create the complete mobile ordering solution for

guest services. We have formed partnerships with world-leading systems and payment providers to ensure Mi-Room can seamlessly integrate with many hotels’ existing EPoS and property management systems. Crucially, it has been designed to improve staff efficiency from the outset, without disruption to current business operations.” As an HTML5 cloud-based solution, Mi-Room negates the need for development costs often associated with mobile ordering and it can be easily managed, whether it’s to make daily updates or add functionality as the hotel’s offering evolves. The software can be fully branded, and, most refreshingly, requires little or no cap-ex, with a low-cost manageable software as a service fee. Graham concluded, “Hotels have already taken the biggest step by investing in a quality Wi-Fi network. Mi-Room is an opportunity to leverage revenue from this pipe, whilst enhancing guests’ stay by conveniently placing services in their hands.”

BAFE – HELPING YOU TO MEET YOUR FIRE PROTECTION OBLIGATIONS Current fire protection legislation across the UK requires property managers of all non-residential premises to have adequate fire protection. It is their responsibility to ensure that there is an adequate, up to date fire risk assessment and that all aspects of the requirements are carried out competently. This is not only to ensure that customers, staff and premises are adequately protected, but also to minimise the risk of costly unwanted false alarms. The most recent CFOA guidance for the Reduction of False Alarms and Unwanted Fire Signals highlights some of the solutions to this problem, amongst which is the use of third party certified providers of fire protection services. To demonstrate that the responsible person (duty holder in Scotland) has met their obligations, many public authorities and commercial organisations now insist that their fire protection services are carried out by a company that has been third party certified. Many now specify that providers are BAFE registered. You can find out if your potential provider is third party certified and BAFE registered at WWW.BAFE.ORG.UK BAFE is the independent third party certification registration body for the fire
protection industry. We develop schemes for UKAS accredited certification bodies to assess and approve companies to recognised standards. There are now more than 1000 companies with over 1250 registrations to BAFE schemes across the UK. Our aim is to support property managers to ensure that they get quality fire protection for their premises, staff and service users. In 2012 BAFE launched the first UKAS accredited scheme for Companies who carry out Fire Risk Assessments (SP205) which is a vital part of meeting obligations under fire legislation. The scheme considers the competence of the individual assessors as well as the quality requirements for the organisation. There are a growing number of companies registering to the scheme, throughout the UK. If you are looking for the supply and maintenance of portable extinguishers, look for one of the 356 Companies accredited to BAFE Schemes SP101/ST104. Companies are certificated to ISO9001 and all of their technicians are assessed by BAFE for initial and ongoing competence. There are currently more than 1200 BAFE registered technicians, working for our registered companies.
For installing or maintaining fire alarm systems Companies should hold BAFE modular SP2031 scheme approval. This scheme includes design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection systems and also requires that all equipment used is third party certificated. The SP203 scheme now has over 800 registered companies. Registration to this BAFE scheme is often a key requirement criteria in tenders for the provision of fire alarms. Our Emergency Lighting scheme (SP203-4) sets out the standards and staff competence criteria to be met. It is modular as with the fire alarm scheme and is achieving growing recognition from end users. There are a range of other BAFE schemes covering particular sectors of the fire protection industry and details can be found on the BAFE website, along with a complete search facility to find registered companies in your area. If you want to be sure you are getting your fire protection from companies who are properly and regularly assessed look for more information at WWW.BAFE.ORG.UK

Style Matters
Mayfair’s MNKY HSE selects Style Matters Mayfair’s latest addition to its prestigious bar and restaurant offering, MNKY HSE has been fully fitted with products from bespoke furniture manufacturer, Style Matters. Combining a vibrant blend of London funk, with Latin spirit, the exclusive new restaurant serves contemporary Latin American food and drink, in a mysterious and eclectic environment to complement the experience. Brian Hawkins, interior design director at Keane Brands – the interior designers who worked on the project, comments: “MNKY HSE offers something completely different to anything else in London, so it was important that the décor reflected this unique experience. “Like the food, drinks and music, the interior design we opted for echoes the ‘nothing is what it seems’ element of the venue. Style Matters provided us with a variety of quirky and eccentric chairs, bar stools, fixed
seating and tables, to put further emphasis on the fun, ‘Eat. Drink. Play’ ethos of the restaurant.”
as well as Manchester-based Hotel Gotham and King Street Townhouse.
MNKY HSE is the first UK-based project of world renowned chef, Pablo Peñalosa Nájera, the man behind the Four Seasons’ Bogotà and Morimoto, in Mexico City. The restaurant opened its doors in October, and is set over two floors – both of which host a weekly roster of live DJs.
Brian concludes: “The overall finish of the seating and tables provided by Style Matters, perfectly complements the look and feel throughout the whole restaurant.
Claire Fox, director of Style Matters, comments: “As with any project we work on in the restaurant sector, durability and flexibility are key. “As MNKY HSE is set within such an exclusive part of London, it was also crucial that the pieces we designed created a luxurious yet relaxing ambience for guests to enjoy.” In addition to MNKY HSE, the team at Style Matters has completed a number of notable projects in recent months including, German Gymnasium, in London,

RMDK Barsana Hotel
the World Of Hospitality
RMDK Barsana Hotel Dhruva Kalra of Ravish Mehra Deepak Kalra lead a team of designers to design Barsana-a 20,130 SF boutique hotel, located midway between Science Park and Park street of Kolkatta. This 7-story building includes 45 guestrooms, a restaurant, an event and conference space. This chain, coming from a small town in Bengal- Siliguri, had to create a niche for itself in the hustle bustle of Kolkatta. Located in a city rich in culture and tradition, the hotel had to be unique, reminiscent of its location and yet fit into budget. The building owing to its confined surroundings, size and height limitations, manages to create a strong presence in the area with its elegant and bold façade dressed with the organic and imperfect texture of the locally procured stone.
Upon entering the main lobby, fluid with a lounge and restaurant, the guest experiences rhythmic line work compositions, forming a visual connection between the exterior and the interior. In a setting of horizontal lines, the reception makes an impact with a contrasting set of line work spread across the floor and ceiling. Burnt – natural stain wooden finish, a scheme of warm colours, along with the beautiful peacock in brass that meets the eye as one enters –adding glamour to the space and giving a sedate colour and feel for guest to feel at ease. Art within a hotel has typically been secondary, however in this case the spaces have been threaded together through the pictures of local elements of Kolkatta, which following an earthy and natural
palette are silent with just a splash of colour, bringing liveliness to the otherwise formal atmosphere. The interiors see the use of every space within to its advantage in a clearly functional manner, while creating the illusion of being in a much larger series of spaces internally. The five upper floors housing the rooms, have a repetitive distribution in order to optimise the space. Specific, bright accent colours have been used in each room to add the much-needed zing and life to it, reflective of the Indian culture, which is full of colour and festivity. Corridor on each level has a unique identity owing to a changing colour scheme, breaking from the silent setting of the public spaces.
RMDK Barsana Hotel
The topmost floor houses the banquet hall, that can function as two separate units with a foldable partition wall or as one large hall based on the need of the hour. This space has been rendered to require minimal ornamentation while being set for a function. The quirky colours, the pattern, the mirrored ceiling-are all representative of the conviviality of the inherent culture. Each space is a sculpted volume with forms, colours, textures, materials and lighting being brought together in a cohesive way to create its individual experience. These spaces create a hotel that is not just a place to stay in temporarily, but one that will leave a lasting impression.

ByHours
the World Of Hospitality
A New Year’s Resolution To Book ‘Micro-Stays’ Could See Uk Hotels Increase Their 2017 Revenue By £100k As we approach 2017, ByHours, the unique, pay-peruse hotel booking platform is urging UK hoteliers to offer customers hotel room stays as short as 3 hours in the year ahead, to capitalise on a very real demand for ‘micro-stays.’ The award-winning start up whose largest market is Spain, has seen Spanish hoteliers offering micro room stays (of 3,6 or 12 hours) using the ByHours platform increase their annual revenues by an average of 100,000 euros and RevPAR between 2 and 4 euros. Guillermo Gaspart, ByHours’ founder and Chairman believes responding to how modern consumers behave, and hotels not limiting themselves to the traditional per night booking model, is key for the future health of the industry when ‘every day a new Airbnb user is born.’ Far from a PR gimmick, micro hotel room stays are answering a very real gap in the market, largely driven by how technology has changed the way we work and raised consumer expectations to live seemlessly. Visit any Starbucks in the worlds’ biggest cities on a weekday and the hoardes of businesspeople on laptops demonstrates the Wifi-enabled need for comfortable places to work in city centres. Amongst consumers ‘an app for that’ mentality has created a demand for GPS-located services which will make their lives ever easier. Whether that’s locating the nearest hotel room for a few hours sleep while visiting relatives in hospital
or using a room to get ready for a night out after a day of shopping, consumers are more open than ever to smart services which are convenient and will allow them to make better use of their time. With hotel rooms offering upgraded home-from-home comforts and privacy, at the same time as being in city centre or strategic locations (ie: airports), there is a massive opportunity to make more use of rooms within a 24 hour booking window- evidenced by some of the most well located hotels in Barcelona increasing revenues by over 150,000 euros a year. Guillermo Gaspart of ByHours said; “There is an exciting gap in the hotelier market for short term room use which we are seeing work hard and drive impressive revenue returns in Spain. Consumers are increasingly demanding clever solutions which will make their lives more comfortable and efficient - qualities epitomised in beautiful hotel rooms with convenient services, located in key city and transportation hubs. The demand is there and UK hoteliers have a massive opportunity to boost their occupancy when thinking more widely than just the traditional booking model. It is crucial that hoteliers do things differently to suit the needs of the modern consumer. It is no use resting on your laurels and breathing a sigh of relief for the Airbnb 90 day limit, there will be new Airbnb propositions and other

smart services, to survive hotels must be creative and resourceful with what they have – useful and comfortable rooms in great locations.” It costs nothing for hoteliers to try the returns offered by the ByHours hotel booking platform for themselves. The platform allows hoteliers to increase their occupancy several times a day by reselling rooms when they are empty, in flexible 3, 6 and 12 hour booking slots (without having to increase their prices or reduce their commission.) With no setup or maintenance costs, the platform is fully managed by hoteliers allowing them to set their own prices, allocate micro-slots as rooms become available and design convenient check-in times. The platform operates seemlessly with hoteliers’ own PMS Channels, allowing properties to use ByHours when it is most profitable for them. ByHours works with both large hotel chains and smaller, individual boutique brands and is open to partnerships with accomodation in the UK’s smaller towns as well as its largest cities. Since launching in 2012, ByHours has attracted over 150,000 regular hotel customers and over 4 million euros worth of investment funding. To sign up, and for further information, hoteliers should visit the trade section of the ByHours website: Are you a hotel manager? or call ByHours on 00 34 934 124 622.
