KRyPT.BAR
krypt.bar - Büro KLK Bar During the renovation works on an ancient heritage building from the late 18th century on Vienna’s traditional Berggasse, a bricked up staircase was found. It led to a twelve meters deep, second cellar area with approximately 250 square meters. Located between Votivkirche and Sigmund Freud’s apartment, this cocktail and underground bar is an aesthetical gem. Historical investigations showed that it was a semi-legal establishment in the 50ies and 60ies in an era of Vienna’s flourishing jazz scene represented by names as Joe Zawinul or Fatty George. So the generic “genius loci ‘did not have to be invented but simply revealed.
The circulation and dramaturgy of the cocktail bar starts at an undecorated, narrow entrance door that leads to a first-basement level, containing the wardrobe and a mirrored vestibule to a “floating” stair case, which suggests a touch of “Sunset Boulevard”. This pathway leads directly to the seven-meters main bar. Several alcoves, a hidden booth, the smallest art gallery in Vienna and secret hallways surround the center piece and give the impression of a nearly surreal venue fallen out of times. Due to the strict constraints concerning the conservation of a historic building the whole building equipment and appliances were situated in a concrete floor plate and in a load-bearing trussing which was directly generated from the engineering
requirements. The whole static structure as well as the ventilating pipes and further installations, were cladded in composition gold. The floor plate is covered with a layer of Italian nero marquina marble manually laid in a herringbone bond. The cladding of the bar counter was cut out of a massive block of Sahara noir laurent gold marble applied in a mirrored pattern, and the counter plate was crafted out of a massive European walnut. The furniture and illumination give the impression as if it was directly carried out of a museum of international furniture design. The famous Platner Arm Chairs by Knoll, the candle light by Ingo Maurer or the Sofa DS1025 by Ubald Klug are arranged with the brand-new bean bags by Alexander Wang for Poltrona Frau.

Established in 1983, West yorkshire-based snack company Zeina Foods has come a long way since Managing Director, Safaa Ali, would drive the length and breadth of Britain delivering his coveted Pistachios. This determination and passion for quality has contributed to Zeina Foods’ ongoing upwards trajectory, with the company now creating a whole range of delectable nut and dried fruit products that are much loved in the speciality and fine food industry and beyond. “We worked really hard when developing these products to ensure that we created the most delicious products to satisfy a sophisticated palate,” explains Safaa. “Our main vision was to create an exciting snack that was nutritious, premium and packed full of flavour. We have over 30 years of experience roasting nuts and use this

The company has forged a dedicated relationship with its suppliers, with staff regularly visiting them in California and the Middle East. “Over the years we have built close relationships with our suppliers, often visiting the producers, meaning we only purchase the finest ingredients to go into our products,” says Safaa. “Using all of our knowledge and experience we feel we have created five really special products that consumers love.”

CATERING
Hot Water For EnergyCatering outlets concerned about energy costs impacting on the bottom line would be advised to review their current hot water provision. Getting rid of a wasteful and costly hot water storage system could make a significant impact to running costs, with the potential of saving up to 30% on fuel bills, when replaced by a technologically advanced Rinnai Infinity condensing continuous flow gas fired water heater system. This especially impacts on kitchen use where there is a continual demand for hot water throughout the day – and often well into the night. According to Rinnai UK, this is only method that can ensure cost effective hot water, whenever it is needed and that will never run out, and that guarantees to save a business thousands of pounds in energy and water usage over its lifetime along with a myriad of unrivalled benefits to the end user.
The infinity systems flexibility and robust design ensure system positioning is flexible and can be decentralised which would add efficiency points to the installation under proposals to Part L of the building regulations. There is also the superlative benefit of the high tech self-diagnostic tools deployed within every Infinity unit giving the end user, system updates constantly along with peace of mind.
With a stored system heat loss calculations can be 5.7kW with gas usage for the loss calculated at 0.53m³ and daily gas usage at 2.19 m3. The Rinnai gas usage is a miserly 1.71m3 and no worries over standing losses. Over a year the stored system will use 624.52 m3 while the Rinnai system will turn in a frugal figure of 444.60 m3, a saving of 179.92 m3 or 28.8 per cent.
For example, a school kitchen installation with three 300 litre sinks can save 29 per cent in energy costs using a Rinnai system comprising two Rinnai Infinity 1200 condensing gas fired continuous flow water heaters when compared with a similar capacity stored hot water system, and never risk running out of hot water even at peak times. The cost of installation can also be considerably cheaper.
Carbon dioxide emissions, too, don’t compare favourably for the stored system as it will be responsible for emitting 1230.22 kg/kW per annum against 875.873 kg/kW for the ultra energy efficient Rinnai set up which offers a carbon saving of 354.45kg/kW (28.80 per cent). Most emphatically, these calculations show the most efficient way to generate hot water quickly and efficiently isn’t by housing a

calculating the amount of hot water likely to be needed daily is complicated by a lack of information related to running time. So specifications often have oversized systems that use too much gas and too much storage. With a gas fired continuous flow system the designer simply needs to count the outlets and calculate the flow rate. As continuous flow system supply endlessly so there is no fear of running out of hot water due to length of time the outlets are left running - It really is that simple.
At the design and specification stage, the continuous flow system makes instant sense as more often than not stored hot water systems are designed to over-capacity as

which translates to significant energy savings. The Government itself has recognised the value of modern condensing technology in gas fired water heaters in its battle to meet its own targets to cut carbon emissions. New Building Regs proposals suggest that non-condensing gas water heaters cannot be employed from October 2013 in new build projects. For more details on RINNAI products visit www.rinnaiuk.com

SOLVING THE PROBLEM OF THE MISTY MIRROR! You don’t need to be Agatha Christie or Sherlock Holmes to solve the problem of steamed up mirrors in the bathroom. The solution is elementary! Install demista™ heated mirror pads and the steam vanishes almost immediately. These pads are easy to fit behind the mirrors, are wired in to the electrical system and no more wiping away steam or trying to peer through a mist, no matter how steamed up the bathroom. For this reason demista™ is the first choice for builders, developers and home owners both in the UK and abroad. Leading hotel groups and prestige apartment developments now include the pads as the norm in either new build or refurbishment projects. Private home owners when updating their bathrooms are choosing heated mirror pads. Running costs are minimal and the pads meet all the required standards for safety, require no maintenance and have a proven record for reliability and durability. Mylines Hotel / LYCS Architecture Hotel Mylines Hotel is an interior renovation project situated in the vicinity of West Lake in Hangzhou, China. The design aims to provide unique spatial experiences for a specific group of people, i.e. couples and lovers seeking for an extraordinary love experience. Usually, in China, the love hotels lack the touch of genuine design from the professionals. Consequently, they are often flashy and amorous. In light of the status quo, Chun Shui Tang, the largest e-commerce enterprise of sex toys in China, has chosen to collaborate
with LyCS Architecture to take on the challenge of redefining love hotels. Situated on a site of 9000sqm, the hotel consists of 33 rooms, measuring 2200sqm building area. Each room is not only designed to arouse excitement, but also to offer an indispensable experience of relaxation, romance, emotional relief and passion. By studying primal human desires, LYCS has thematized and designed the rooms into the following five categories: narcissism,
long-cherished lust, exposure, fantasy and romance. By manipulating the interior and exterior interfaces, scale of the rooms, the floor plans, acoustics and controlled illumination, various types of environments are created to stimulate, trigger and magnify the guests’ inner desires. Woka Lamps WOKA LAMPS VIENNA is a Vienna-based Manufacturer of Iconic 20th Century Lighting Design. Lovers of iconic lamps from the early 20th century were for decades deprived of the possibility of owning some of the most striking pieces by the Wiener Werkstätte and the Bauhaus, which had long fallen out of production. The designers whose work WOKA is licensed to produce read like a who’s who of the Vienna design pantheon. In addition to Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, the manufacturer has reissued striking table, ceiling, wall and floor lamps, as well as chandelier pieces, by the likes of Adolf Loos, Otto Wagner and Carl Witzmann.
A collection of very rare antiques of the early 20th century as well as a large collection of chandeliers from the 18th century until the 1960s is completing the business of the WOKA GALLERy. On request all antiques and pieces of arts are delivered with an expertise made out by a certified appraiser for art and antiques on the commercial court in Vienna. Due to WOKA’s extraordinary achievement, in 2016 the minister for economic affairs and Vice Chancellor of the Austrian Republic Reinhold Mitterlehner, has awarded WOKA LAMPS VIENNA with the right to use the Austrian Coat of Arms in matters of business.

Built in 1840, initially as the central railway ticket office, The Three Guineas has recently undergone a major facelift, keeping the traditional railway theme but given a contemporary twist. The previously unused basement has been opened up to create
the Firefly room, an authentic and striking vaulted cellar which has been stripped back to expose the original brick-built arches. The main bar and kitchen areas have been remodelled to provide an open display kitchen and quaint bistro tables adorn the outside terrace. The pub is illuminated throughout with an impressive array of Bright Goods LED filament lamps that are housed in rustic reclaimed pendant lights, industrial brass cluster fittings and glass crystal chandeliers to evoke a welcoming and mood enhancing environment. “The lighting is the standout feature in each room” said Jayden Kopsala, Assistant Manager at The Three Guineas. “It attracts a lot of interest from our customers and has helped create the atmosphere we want here. We envisaged a contemporary look with a

classic feel to the pub and the lighting has helped make this a reality, making the perfect environment for all of our customers.” On behalf of Fuller’s, The Light Corporation was commissioned to survey all its managed estate of over 200 pubs, and recommended that low energy Bright Goods LED lamps were specified for each pub. Peter Turner, Property Director at Fuller’s added: “We were very impressed with the appearance of Bright Goods LED lights. They provide illumination that is as warm and welcoming as a filament bulb, maintaining the all-important ambience of the pub in the evening. It is also highly controllable, and can be dimmed as required. It allows us to maintain a traditional feel while reducing our carbon footprint.”

Chantelle Lighting is shaping the hospitality industry in terms of creating and manufacturing stunning lighting products. Chantelle Lighting is approached regularly with requests for the relatively straightforward, to the weird and wonderful and every project undertaken is done so with commitment, creativity and a desire to produce the very best product for every customer. A recent project at city centre bar in Liverpool, The Refinery was the perfect opportunity to create a cool, urban, yet classy and distinctive look, using expert lighting. Double rope pendants aligned with two globe bulbs feature along the
windows, bringing the outside in, adding to the natural sunlight and creating a golden warmth and glow. Double conduit wall lights with two cream pleated shades add simplicity and softness to the look. Placed near to the rope fittings, the two complement each other nicely. A stunning bespoke multi pendant made from a bicycle wheel and decorated with a gold chain and crystal was used, and to complete the look, 12 fringed pendants were placed above the bar. The fringe feature looks fantastic when illuminated, as the golden tassels light up. Unique, striking lighting which adds to the industrial, modern feel of the venue, highlighting key features and creating a certain ambience for diners.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
Playing For Keeps Caterer.com Caterer.com Sales Director, Neil Pattison explains that for hospitality employers of all sizes, retention is the key to success The UK Hospitality industry employs nearly 4.5 million people, making it the fourth largest sector in the country. Over the last five years, one in five new jobs in the UK has been within the hospitality industry with a further 100,000 due to be created by the end of the decade. Even so, hospitality employers across the board are facing increasing recruitment challenges, and the long standing skills gap and labour shortage is a key reason. Whilst there is undoubtedly a lack of labour, there are still plenty of skilled workers in the market, and many more who have the potential to deliver at a high level. The workforce, however, has changed. Top talent is more demanding than ever and securing and
keeping the candidates you want means a new, agile approach. Hospitality employers of all sizes are currently rolling out new programmes and initiatives with the objective of engaging talent from the outset. Companies have been reaching candidates directly with specially designed, brand-strong launch campaigns, they are offering candidate experiences and on-boarding programmes that value new inductees and they have built learning and development programmes specifically designed at nurturing talent and thus encouraging greater employee retention. If recruiting good people can feel like a step forward, losing talent for any reason can feel like two steps back. It can sap your resources, impact your productivity and directly affect your bottom line. Strong retention is always WEBSiTE: www.caterer.com
a good attraction tool. Studies have found that satisfied and engaged employees can be great advocates for your employer brand, both to customers and to future candidates which is a priceless asset in a skills-short and increasingly competitive market. Successful retention of staff also leads to higher skills levels within your business. Experienced hires become part of the fabric of your brand and pass their knowledge on to others and this can benefit employees at every level. In turn, this feeds the culture of your workplace; a key focus for employees now, who look to spend their working life in an environment within which they can relate. The longer good people stay, and the more you invest in their retention, the richer your business will become – in every sense of the word.

With warmer British summers, there is an opportunity to maximise the use of outdoor spaces. Elegantly landscaped grounds can increase appeal as a wedding venue or add a quirky boutique feel, both to boost profit. The glow of the neon sign beckons from beyond the clear glass door to the bar. This is the entrance to the glass house, shining out into the dark neighborhood, attracting customers with its warm glow. See through the glass wall, the main spirit of the space – a 5 meter high feature wall with golden light. Made of brushed stainless steel, the shelfs rise layer by layer, just like golden wave in the dark night softly coming to the people.
From the ceiling hangs some diamond chandeliers which reveal the aesthetic is cohesive with the feature wall and similarly twinkles in the warm light, like stars in the night sky.
Concealed golden lights illuminate the façade, a theme consisting of the bar’s interior. All five main areas of the design (the façade, the
Groupings of 3-4 seats are scattered throughout the main space. The smaller groups provide a feeling of privacy and comfort for customers. The high ceiling provides space for a small mezzanine with 2-3 groups of seating. The glass railing creates transparency for the view and opens up the space.
Besides these main lighting elements, there are several reflective metal elements inside the main room and along the stair that bounce light within the space, as a light show. The VIP lounge has a wine display wall. The concept of it is a residential parlor. It is a kind of secret space – dimly lit, with dark materials, a comfortable sofa and a view out to beyond the glass wall. You sit, hidden, and look out to the brighter space. The 3D wine bar flows down and continue the mood throughout the hallway and into the restroom. The vanity features are the same black marble as the wine bar, with bronze mirror walls. The materials are solid, but cast in the soft warm glow of the lights above creates an accent of chic elegance.
