Do Not Disturb: Steaming in Progress - P RO P R E S S Does your hotel have Propress on its radar? If not, it’s time to check Propress MINI, our handheld steamer, into your hotel. The Iron Age is over; there’s no need to clutter your guests’ storage space with a cumbersome iron and board. Established in 1980, Propress is the original steaming brand supplying shops, soft furnishers, hotels, and resorts — removing creases in fabric wherever they appear. Our steamers are the highest-quality, longest-lasting, and most reliable on the market. In hotels, professional steamers have traditionally been used for housekeeping, banqueting and events, to provide a five-star freshening and anti-creasing touch to staff uniforms, curtains, tablecloths, and chair covers. (Steaming even kills bed bugs and their eggs almost immediately.) Propress MINI can be used on a variety of clothing, from suits to dresses, and even delicate fabrics. It’s so versatile, it can be used vertically, for hanging fabric, or horizontally on bed linen and upholstery.
Guests often look to remove creases from clothes when unpacking or after a few days’ stay, especially those travelling for business or individuals attending events where wrinkle-free clothing is important. Coupled with its ability to treat delicate materials, the Propress MINI is ready to go in just 45 seconds, making it a match made in heaven for wedding attendees. As the old saying goes: “Steam if you want to go faster!”

‘’We are fitting Waterblade because energy is our company’s third biggest cost, and Waterblade is a quick win with a fast payback and a long term return.’’ This is what we were told by a client recently. We think that Waterblade offers the best lowflow washing and rinsing performance there is. It is easily fitted to your existing bathroom and washroom taps, and can help you make a dent in your third biggest expense, energy. Our trials indicate that you can reduce your whole building water by around 5%. That also reduces your whole building energy consumption by around 1.5%, by using less hot water. When fitted as a range of measures we are achieving 20% reduction in whole building water consumption, and 5% reduction in whole building energy consumption. For a measure that takes minutes to implement and has a Return on Investment measured in Months, it has to be worth considering! Waterblade has been fitted to 10,000+ hotel bathrooms in the last year, as well as 1,000’s of washroom basins. It is WRAS approved and UK manufactured in premises with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

Matthew Williamson unveils new dining and meeting space at the Design Museum - M AT T H E W W I L L I A M S O N Award-winning interior designer, Matthew Williamson, renowned for his distinctive, eclectic style and use of intricate pattern and vivid colour, has unveiled his latest project, the new Design Kitchen in the Sachs Family Park Room at the Design Museum in Kensington, London. Inspired by the stunning views over Holland Park, Williamson worked closely with UK-based artisans and brands to design a welcoming, decorative contemporary environment which blends harmoniously with the minimalist and stark architectural aesthetic of the existing space. “For the new Design Kitchen at the Design Museum, I chose to focus on the views outside the windows overlooking Holland Park as my inspiration. A rich palette of varying tones of green was used to invigorate the space. Mid-century furniture, handblown glass lighting, velvet and printed upholstery were selected for a homely, informal atmosphere.
- 26 -
I wanted the space to feel non-intimidating, uplifting yet relaxed, so visitors would feel inspired to return time and time again. I’m incredibly proud of the design and I am looking forward to seeing it work as a live, commercial space which looks and feels like a home away from home.” – Matthew Williamson. A place to relax, entertain, meet and inspire, the Design Kitchen, on the museum’s second floor, has an informal, laid-back feel, with two lounge settings combining vintage and eclectic furnishings, largely sourced by Lia Briamonte, Creative Director at Anemone Interiors. A brick-toned hexagonal marble dining table takes centre stage for informal meetings, whilst a 1970s brown leather corner sofa, a modern deep green velvet sofa and a mid-century coffee table create the perfect set up for more relaxed gatherings. Injecting personality and uplifting the space, club chairs upholstered in foliage fabrics by Zoffany and William Morris & Co., bright accent cushions and natural floral patterns are dotted throughout. The colour palette focuses on three shades of green from Little Greene, infusing the room with a sense of calm and focus. The green tones create a smooth gradient from light to dark across the walls, banquettes and woodwork, forming intimate spaces where visitors can work or enjoy their lunch at the black marble-top bistro tables. Each alcove features a green Planet pendant ceiling light from Williamson’s collection with John Lewis, as well as Williamson’s rechargeable cordless Phileas table lamp designed for Pooky adding a cosy glow. Hand-blown glass and vintage ceramic wall lights from Curiousa and marble and rattan table lamps from lights&lamps complete the lighting scheme. The renovation management was headed up by Fran Lee, a stylist and creative whom Williamson instantly connected with whilst working on the BBC TV series Interior Design Masters. Despite their different tastes and styles, Williamson and Lee are able to fuse their ideas together to create even more impactful spaces. The Design Kitchen is open during normal museum hours.

How contemporary art has become a preferred choice for hospitality projects - V E LV E N O I R In a world marked by rapid change, art becomes our anchor. It links us to the ever-evolving tapestry of culture and society, encouraging us to explore, question, and dream. It elevates the concept of hospitality to a level where your hotel room is not just a space; it’s a personal connection to a living, breathing narrative, conveyed through the language of contemporary art. The days when hotel art was an afterthought, offering nothing more than a pleasing but fleeting background, are long gone.Today’s premier hotels have elevated their standards by offering art collections that rival those of the most esteemed local galleries. In some instances, we have gone a step further by collaborating directly with artists and galleries to build a permanent art collection becoming part of the hotel’s identity. Let’s delve into this noteworthy shift. Our journey begins with a profound appreciation for the transformative potential of art. We recognize that the art adorning a hotel room should be more than just an aesthetically pleasing image; it should resonate with you on a personal level.
In our view, art isn’t just a platform for displaying talent; it’s an inseparable part of our daily experiences. When we collaborate with artists, we invite them to contribute to something enduring, something that transcends time. We carefully select and commission artists to create a body of work that becomes a permanent addition to the art collection of our hospitality projects. This collection serves as a tribute to the city and its surroundings, weaving the rich fabric of local culture into every brushstroke. Every artist we choose undergoes a selection process, tailored to our specific requirements. Once commissioned, their work is an honest and authentic portrayal of their unique perspective on the city. It’s their way of capturing the essence of the city and breathing life into it on paper or canvas through their artistic expression. With each piece, they invite you to perceive the world through their eyes and immerse yourself in the vibrant spirit of the locale. So, the next time you step into your hotel room and gaze upon one of the artwork, know that it signifies more than mere decoration—it represents a personal essay. It is a testament to the power of collaboration, a connection to artists who inspire us to see the world from a different perspective, and a unique opportunity to craft your own story while residing in the hotel. That’s the shift we keep seeing and we are truly excited for all of the amazing hospitality projects to come.

Blending socializing, work and dining - WHASTUDIO double-height steel mesh boxes elegantly frame the space, with an artificial skylight enhancing the illusion of an outdoor setting. The café’s first two floors are thoughtfully dedicated to the dining area, offering various seating configurations. From the more typical bench tables to communal circular tables and island seating, these variations foster diverse social interactions among our guests, thereby creating distinct spatial experiences. Nestled in between, a half mezzanine level discreetly houses service programs such as the office and kitchen. The third floor caters to specialized uses, including a meeting room and a coffee brewing training room. The fourth floor, designed as a flexible room, holds potential for future expansion, ensuring adaptability.
Situated on a narrow plot, this four-story project faces a unique challenge with its 6m x 25m façade stretching 31m deep. Conventional architectural typology would rely on artificial lighting, but the essence of a successful coffee shop – abundant natural light and easy horizontal flow – contradicts this notion. The coffee shop is envisioned as a place for extended stays, blending socializing, work, and dining, thus demanding a warmly inviting ambiance.
The design embraces a unique blend of natural and industrial aesthetics, with exposed concrete and rugged steel beams at its core. Hints of green from the terrazzo flooring and abundant greenery infuse the space, forming a harmonious alliance between the industrial and the natural. The café exudes an industrial aesthetic while ingeniously incorporating elements of the outdoors, a conscious effort to bring the outside environment inside. The project is a testament to our aspiration to create an urban oasis, a hub for coffee enthusiasts, nestled within the bustling city.
The design employs a strategic arrangement of oblique concrete and mesh boxes interwoven across the site. A central void, illuminated by natural light penetrating through the main space, breaks through the vertical mass. Within this void, vibrant greenery, including trees and hanging plants, harmoniously coexists with a 25m tall mirror wall, infusing the café with a tropical and outdoor ambiance. The “green void” takes center stage, acting as the heart of the space from which every program radiates. In the primary dining area,

“Poppies” now on view at Raffles London at The OWO, Whitehall - L A SV I T Lasvit, the renowned design house specializing in glass and light, is proud to announce the installation of “Poppies,” a site-specific, handmade glass artwork made for The OWO hotel situated in one of the historic spaces within Raffles London in Whitehall. This large-scale bespoke installation finds its inspiration in the symbolism of the common poppy, paying homage to the historical significance of the building and commemorating the sacrifices made by war heroes.
Echoes of History The Old War Office is located close to Buckingham Palace and holds a prominent place in London’s history as the former headquarters of the Ministry of Defence and the original office of Winston Churchill. It stands as an iconic landmark in the heart of the city, and resonates with stories of bravery, determination and resilience in the face of adversity.

the glass petals, I was able to achieve an organic and unexpected composition that mimics the undulating motion of poppy flowers in nature.”
A Tribute in Glass To create the centerpiece for Raffles London at The OWO, Lasvit meticulously crafted largescale pieces of fused glass, with each glass piece individually cut and shaped into specific molds for individual petal variations. The attention to detail is evident in the use of different textures for the petals which mirror the natural formations of real flowers. Multiple shades of red were carefully selected to match the depth and richness found in nature. The result is an abstract art piece with poppy flowers cascading from the ceiling and coming together to form a grand poppy blossom when viewed from below, and when seen from The OWO’s Grand Courtyard
Shalini Hinduja, representative of building owners Hinduja Group, and Matteo Canepari, The OWO’s Head of Design, believed the stunning triple height space facing the main courtyard of The OWO needed a special installation that could be visible from outside as well as within the Courtyard. Initially, Petra Sošťáková, one of Lasvit’s experienced designers, proposed an installation consisting of elegant white glass petals hanging from the ceiling. During the creative conversations with the client, Ms. Hinduja and Mr. Canepari, suggested using a variation of reds, blacks and whites so that it could represent the poppies. Given the building’s historical context and the symbolism of the poppy flower in British culture, incorporating it was felt by everyone as the right artistic decision.
“We aimed to create a work that would be impossible to replicate elsewhere, one which would truly capture the essence of this remarkable building and its historical context,” says Sošťáková. “The organic shaping of each glass piece adds to the installation’s natural and captivating effect. The use of varying shades and textures moreover ensures that the installation remains dynamic, reflecting the ever-changing seasons and the interplay of natural and artificial light.” The glass installation comprises 117 unique components featured in twelve different colors and textures, and stands as a testament to Lasvit’s commitment to artistic excellence and innovation. The fusion of traditional glassmaking techniques with contemporary design creates a uniquely contemplative experience for all visitors to The OWO and Raffles London.
This was very much in line with Šosťáková creative vision, who then drew inspiration from her experiences living in London where she witnessed the profound importance of Remembrance Day. She observed the prominent role of the poppy flower as a symbol of tribute and respect for those who gave their lives in the fight for freedom. Sošťáková explains her artistic vision: “I wanted to capture the essence of the natural poppy flowers, their swaying movement in the field, and the profound significance they hold. By creating numerous variations in the shapes of

Layers of lounge lighting - ELSTEAD LIGHTING Layers of decorative lighting in your lounge can help with functionality as well as bring personality and style into your most versatile living space.
Create a cental focal point Whether it is a traditional period property or a modern minimalistic hotel, there are many decorative lights available to suit. Choose a light that has a metal finish that blends in with the architectural elements in the room such as brass, nickel or black door handles. Then if you have the space to create drama with a beautiful crystal chandelier or a modern LED sculptural light, this will help to bring a sparkling focus point into your room. You may have a low ceiling, so choose from a large collection of decorative flush or semi-flush fixtures for this situation. Consider installing dimmer switches in your lounge to enable you to create a relaxing ambience when people arrive or are waiting to go to dinner.
Creating additional layers Wall lights offer a great opportunity to make them functional wall art, especially with dramatic overscaled sconces. Consider accent picture lights to illuminate your paintings sculptures in the room. The clever use of natural light from windows, reflected into the room from statement mirrors should help make the most of bright sunny days, along with beautiful soft light and cosy fireplaces in the winter.
Table and Floor Lamps A pair of table lamps on sofa side tables can add a final soft layer of light, as well as provide additional task lighting if they have flexible arms to pull out and direct light over your shoulder whilst reading. Table lamps are available in all shapes and can bring a pop of colour to your décor in the daytime, as well as provide a gentle light in the evening. Stylish floor lamps can help fill an otherwise dark corner when paired with an armchair to create a relaxing reading nook or meeting area. For more inspirational ideas to brighten up your lounge, visit the Elstead Lighting showroom in Mill Lane, Alton, Hampshire where you will find more than 2,500 lighting models on display. The variety of choice is unrivalled, and our staff are on hand Monday to Friday 9-5pm and Saturday 9-1pm, to provide a friendly advisory service.

The goal is to create a new Lobby Bar and Restaurant that will become a gastronomic and cultural space open to the entire city. Located at the base of Montjuic mountain, the city’s largest urban park, the design of the new space aims to seamlessly blend Montjuic’s natural beauty and Mediterranean charm. To achieve this, the existing slope between the entrance and the rear restaurant area creates stepped platforms with organic shapes. These platforms invite guests to explore them, evoking the feeling of ascending the mountain in front.
Bar area The platforms create undulating paths around the new circular Bar, which becomes a node of centripetal energy, almost like a new roundabout that engages with Plaza de España. With its prominent formal presence and visible position from the entrance, the Bar becomes the focal point that invites visitors to enter.
- 48 -
The materiality in this area seeks to recreate the ambience of a garden, with warm wooden ceilings resembling treetops. A natural and neutral colour palette accentuates the vibrant green of the ceramic Bar.
Lobby area The hotel’s reception is discreetly positioned on the initial access level, yet remains peripheral. This area is designed with vibrant and artisanal ceramics composed of three-dimensional pieces specially crafted for the project. The aim is to establish a dialogue with the bar counter, while capturing the freshness and greenery of Montjuic Park.
“SIMULTANEO” Gastronomic space Venturing further into the project, the top level features a spacious area bathed in intense natural light, thanks to its new translucent greenhouselike roof. Underneath this radiant Mediterranean light, El Equipo Creativo has created a true garden within the city. Large planters fill the space with greenery and freshness. Their organic shapes serve as benches, creating undulating pathways and even a small elevated stage. Through this careful arrangement, diverse areas and intimate corners are crafted for seating, each ideally suited for specific occasions or times of the day. This thoughtful configuration enables Simultaneo Restaurant to fulfill its functional requirements as a spacious and versatile gastronomic and cultural space where multiple activities can coexist throughout the day, from breakfast to evening cocktails, and from business meetings and family gatherings, to conferences and concerts.

Bringing the deep south to life - H A R R I S O N A N D H I C KO RY ’ S S M O K E H O U S E Hickory’s Smokehouse, a leading authentic BBQ smokehouse restaurant which has seen huge success in the Midlands and Northwest, has appointed 360-degree global branding, interior design & architecture specialist, Harrison, to be their partners. The partnership will see Hickory’s Smokehouse and Harrison open additional sites this year across the UK, with the ambition to bring a new world of BBQ smokehouse dining to more guests. The first new restaurant designed by Harrison opened in early March in Huddersfield in the former High Park Pub on Bradley Road, swiftly followed by Chellaston, Derby, at the site of The Bonnie Prince, at the end of July and most recently in Thornton-Cleveleys on 22nd September. Following a competitive bid, Harrison secured the contract with Hickory’s Smokehouse to
design the new sites and evolve the Hickory’s brand, while retaining the overall aesthetic and charm that makes each Hickory’s restaurant unique. The partnership began with a weeklong study tour in Texas, the home of BBQ. Neil McDonnell, founder of Hickory’s and Lisa Owen (Marketing) alongside Nathan Stevenson (Lead Designer) and Dean Concannon (Design Director) wanted to get under the skin of and strengthen their understanding of the rich history of Southern states BBQ. Putting every element under the microscope, from the location to the atmosphere to food to restaurant design and even the way the team interacted with guests, together they visited over 120 sites across Dallas and Austin for inspiration (including the legendary ‘Blacks’, ‘Salt Lick’, ‘Kreuz’ & ‘Franklin BBQ’ along with Meanwhile Brewing Company, Truck Yard and Ebeley), experiencing the heart and soul of an

authentic smokehouse restaurants. It was this in-depth experience which determined which elements of the deep Southern smokehouse would be best to bring back to the UK. Nathan Stevenson, Design Manager at Harrison, comments: “One of the most important things we saw was smokehouse restaurants are all about the smoker. The smokers and cooking are upfront and on show to emphasise the craft of the pit masters and quality of the food. The design is usually secondary and very simple, often put together in a haphazard way and with an ‘undesigned’ quality. A lot of restaurants are in large industrial spaces, barns or timber cabin-type buildings, with raw materials and finishes that have an aged patina to them. “We wanted to incorporate this into our design, dialling up the American-isms and introducing elements to make the spaces feel like they had been built, developed, and added to over time in an ad hoc way rather than meticulously designed, evoking that quirky, eclectic feel that we had seen in the US restaurants. What’s more, from our tour we wanted to bring home some artifacts to incorporate and emphasise the look and feel of these smokehouses. This included hooks from flea markets to go on the back of the toilet doors, among many others. A stuffed alligator may even have made the journey home...”
A refined and updated brand identity for the new phase of the restaurant’s journey: For the new phase of the Hickory’s design, Harrison wanted to tread the line and strike a balance between the authentic deep-south smokehouse feel, whilst also bringing in touches of refinement more akin to a New York steakhouse, an important aspect for UK diners. What’s more, each Hickory’s location had to remain unique. While sharing a common design ethos, every location will continue to approach each new Hickory’s as a fresh, new project, drawing on elements which reflect the local area and community. Having both designers in the UK and US (Dallas) allowed the team to approach the brief ensured when translating such a big part of American culture for a British audience, it was done in such a way which would resonate well. Stevenson adds, “One of the most important things about a Hickory’s is it offers customers a feeling of escapism. Diners should feel transported by the atmosphere, décor, and food to a place in the southern states. At the same time, we’re conscious we are designing for the UK where perceptions are different from the US. While we want it to be authentic and real, not a ‘cookie cutter’ approach. The challenge for us was to incorporate the experiences from
- 55 -
the US into the existing brand in a subtle way to enhance the essence that customers love about Hickory’s. Everything we have done, every detail has been incorporated not to change the brand, but to enhance the essence of Hickory’s which customers love.” “Heading to Texas with Nathan & Dean was a great way to kickstart the partnership with Harrison. We checked out some of our favourite places that have inspired us for the past 15 years and explored new places. We came back with new ideas for quirky design features, and it’s been great seeing everything come together at Hickory’s Huddersfield & Hickory’s Derby. We’ve had some incredible comments from our guests too in both restaurants.” Neil McDonnell, founder of Hickory’s Smokehouse explains. Key design include:

Plaswood™ Delivers a Circular and Crowd Pleasing Solution for Raised Flower Beds - P L A SWO O D ™ -
material stability and its attractive appearance are particularly important for their prominent positions around the Emirates Stadium.
A collaboration project between Berry Global’s Plaswood™ business, and ecological transformation specialist Veolia has resulted in the installation of Plaswood™ plastic lumber raised flower beds outside Arsenal Football Club’s Emirates stadium, which have been manufactured in part from recycled seat covers from the stadium. The project provides an excellent example of plastics’ role in the circular economy, demonstrating how products can be given a useful second life and avoid being sent to landfill. The used seat covers were collected by Veolia and delivered to the Plaswood™ recycling facility in Dumfries, Scotland where together with other waste plastic they were shredded, reprocessed and remanufactured into high quality recycled and recyclable plastic lumber. The material provides a durable, long-lasting and low-maintenance solution for the new raised bed structure.
Just as important, the plastic lumber does not require painting or chemical treatment, because neither the weather nor environmental conditions can damage the highly resistant and durable material. “The effective recycling of plastic into new products supports companies’ drive towards a circular economy and net zero, and these are also key commitments of Berry’s ongoing sustainability strategy,” commented Katherine Lorek, Plaswood’s Sales Director. “In addition, this latest project demonstrates the versatility of Plaswood™ in providing practical and aesthetic solutions for a variety of outdoor garden and landscaping applications.”
Plaswood™ is not only weatherproof and moisture repellent, but it is also resistant to oils, acids, and alkaline solutions, making it a good long term reliable solution that will retain its structural integrity whilst reducing maintenance costs many times over, when compared to timber material. Interior design blends vintage elegance with modern comfort - T H E CO L L EC T I V E AT WO O L S E RY The Collective at Woolsery offers spectacular accommodation that fuses history, glamour and utmost luxury. This is a place that is inspiring and intriguing at the same time, born from a vision to create something that is unique, unforgettable and reminiscent of the past. Every room, suite and cottage has its own narrative, which has been carefully created with an empathy for the building and its former life, and this has been woven into its current context to evoke a strong connection with its history. Emily Harmon, the project manager, collaborated with designer Hannah Lohan from New Heritage Design to create stunning spaces that radiate both richness and comfort and are carefully curated to blend old with new. This reflects the importance tech entrepreneur Michael Birch, who owns The Collective at Woolsery with his wife Xochi, places on his forebears who lived and worked in North Devon.
- 66 -
Hannah says: “It’s been a dream to work with Emily, Michael, and Xochi on the interior accommodation at The Collective at Woolsery. Knowing their eccentric and theatrical style from incredible projects such as The Battery in San Francisco, I was inspired to create something that would be narrative driven. The high-end finishes and attention to detail really set the tone for my team with each building.” The collaboration truly comes alive through Emily Harmon’s detailed briefs, akin to scripts, which meticulously outline the theme and style for each room. The synergy between New Heritage Design and Emily allowed for the creation of mood boards that seamlessly stitched together the narrative. “We collaborated on our visions, often participating in ‘workshop days’ sifting through fabrics and prints which was exciting but also gratifying,” added Hannah.
“Rich fabric textures and contrasting colours amplify the crossover in aesthetics which was such a key design element within the project,” says Emily. A defining aspect of The Collective at Woolsery is the amalgamation of vintage wallpapers, prints and heritage fabrics reimagined in a contemporary manner, evoking nostalgia while remaining cutting-edge. This approach exemplifies the ability to preserve the past while crafting a fresh and modern experience for residents and visitors alike. Whiteworks supplied hand painted designs printed onto wallpapers. Suzanna Whitework discovered her grandmother’s portfolio of 1940’s designs which inspired the creation of the Jet Collection (named after Joan Evelyn Thomson 1914-1993). www.whiteworksgroup.co.uk
Art holds a special place in their hearts, which inspired the curation of an exquisite collection of art pieces with an emphasis on supporting emerging artists discovered at art fairs in and around London. Trawling vintage antique markets such as ‘Alfie’s Antique Market’ in North London helped the pair source incredible vintage finds that have been carefully restored and harmonise seamlessly with modern elements such as the opulent soft furnishings.

Shaun Menzfeld, a local joiner, played a pivotal role in this project’s success. Bespoke wood paneling, mahogany inlays and vanity units infused a sense of luxury into every inch of the space. Collaborations with artisans like leather worker Bill Amberg, whos leather strap were woven throughout the metal staircase in The Old Smithy. The infusion of scorched wood textures, masterfully executed by Toasted Wood, breathes life into various elements, including timber and kitchen units. www.toastedwood.co.uk In the shop suites there are Rockwell Baths, The Water Monopoly’s reinterpretation of the classic roll-top bath showcases the thoughtfulness that pervades the bathroom suites. www.thewatermonpoly.com Hannah concludes: “What sets The Collective at Woolsery apart is the incredible attention to detail from reupholstering vintage hand-picked furniture to creating bespoke pieces through local joiners, architects, metal workers, and importantly supporting young emerging artists.”
A DETAILED LOOK AT EACH SPACE The journey starts at the village shop, a unique community store that delights with its food and drinks. The shelves are filled with a variety of foods, in a setting reminiscent of the 1940s but with a touch of contemporary art by Joy Bomb. This shop, called J Andrew Shop and Post Office, has deep family roots for Michael Birch, as it was originally built by his great-grandfather, and his grandmother was born there. The playful pop art adds a fun touch, and the colourful tiles and stylish blown glass lighting contrast the two eras.
Suites and Rooms Shop Suite 1 retro feminine and fabulous A feminine approach to the design, with pink hues and botanical wallpaper create a retro inspired feel.

Shop Suite 2 roomy vintage-vibe suite This room has a masculine take on the 1940’s style with deep blue tones contrasted with light mustard furniture and patterned wallpaper. Shop Room 3 vintage feminine charm The soft palette of colours are reminiscent of the romantic and glamorous charm of the 1940s. In the bathroom, a beautiful yellow Rockwell bath from The Water Monopoly proudly sits on round feet, a modern twist on a traditional roll top bath. The focal point of the room has to be the incredibly expansive skylight built into the rafters which looks directly out onto the Medieval church tower. Shop Room 4 period styling and stunning views Room 4 offers guests a view straight out to Dartmoor, its large Crittal windows allow light to flood the room. The use of dark woods and rich fabrics allow a masculine theme to run throughout the 1940’s styled room. The two rooms are located on the top floor and built into the rafters allowing guests to witness incredible views of the surrounding countryside and the village of Woolsery. To stay above the J Andrews Shop in one of the suites costs £325 or alternatively reside in one of the beautiful rooms for £275 a night.

TISSUE PAPER IS NATURAL AND MADE FROM A SUSTAINABLE RESOURCE. SUSTAINABILITY HAS BEEN A WAY OF LIFE FOR THE TISSUE INDUSTRY FOR GENERATIONS. IT HAS ALWAYS HAD TO THINK LONG TERM AS ITS RAW MATERIAL TAKES MANY DECADES TO GROW.
Why Tissue Paper is
THE SMART CHOICE for a Sustainable World COMMITTED TO SUSTAINABILITY ACROSS THE SUPPLY CHAIN
SUPPORTING THE EU AND UN GOALS
ETS is committed to driving sustainable practices throughout the industry. It is also looking to increase sustainability across the supply chain – from water and energy through to transport and recovery. Tissue paper production ensures that every part of the raw material – trees – is put to good use. It uses mainly bark and twigs from the lumber industry which are made into pulp that is the basis of tissue paper.
Tissue paper producers are active supporters of the EU Circular Economy Action Plan – a key building block of the European Green Deal, which has a number of sustainability targets including transforming the EU into a modern and competitive economy. The goal of the Action Plan is sustainable growth and it lays special focus on resource efficiency with more waste prevention, reuse and recycling and the phasing out of wasteful practices like landfill. This goal of enabling sustainable consumption and production is also reflected in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production. Tissue products have an important role to play here. They are essential for people’s health and hygiene. While paper is the most recycled material in Europe, with recycling rates of over 70%, tissue paper, because of its applications in toilet paper, tissues etc, is usually a single-use product which typically goes to waste after use. Tissue products nevertheless fit neatly into existing waste management schemes and can in many cases provide a benefit such as incineration with energy recovery or composting.
SUPPORTING CERTIFICATION SCHEMES Third-party certification is one of the best ways to ensure that suppliers meet recognised standards. It lends credibility to the sector and offers reassurance to both customers and consumers. Most tissue producers support the different international and national forest certification schemes and over 80% of the forests owned by paper and lumber companies in Europe are certified. Some tissue producers have chosen to carry labels on their products in order to show their high environmental credentials – such as the EU Ecolabel, the FSC and PEFC labels and regional labels including Nordic Swan and Blue Angel. The paper sector is also signatory to the Legal Logging Code of Conduct which condemns illegal logging. The EU timber regulation furthermore upholds industry standards and ensures that only products from legally sourced wood are sold within the EU. Some 11% of timber felled in the world is used to make paper, and 83% of Europe’s paper mills are certified by an environmental management system.
DRIVING CIRCULARITY UP AND DOWN THE VALUE CHAIN Many tissue paper producers are supporting the development of new, circular business models using innovation to create closed-loop products and processes. This will serve to increase product recovery and minimise waste. There is a focus on reducing greenhouse gas
emissions, transferring to renewable energy and decreasing water use. Some 58% of Europe’s pulp and paper industry’s energy consumption already comes from renewable biomass, and it is proud to be the largest single user and producer of bio-energy in Europe. The sector also continues to work on reducing its impact on water consumption and is an active partner in the development of water stewardship. Paper making machines have reduced water consumption by 30% over the past 10 years as a result of more efficient water circulation, and the amount of water needed to produce one ton of pulp has fallen five-fold since 1970. Many individual producers are promoting zero waste to landfill, eliminating waste, reducing packaging weight and fostering recyclable packaging and the use of recycled content. They are also exploring innovation in product design and development. In the area of ‘reduce’, the industry is seeing the emergence of new products that use less material for the same functionality. It is also witnessing new sustainable products that use fresh, wood-based fibre, recycled fibres and alternative fibres. It is important to promote circularity in this regard in order to increase the availability of paper for recycling as a secondary raw material. Recycling plays an important role in the sustainability of the paper cycle. Tissue paper producers are working together with their packaging suppliers to turn waste into a resource through collection, sorting and recycling.

The classic Art Deco pattern, inspired by the oblique structural frame of the building, is reinterpreted, and becomes the pattern that serves as a common thread for the interior design of the hotel. For example, the layout in three shades of gray marble which conforms to a “tartan” frame extending over the entire surface of the ground floor, establishes a neutral and elegant background, perfect for receiving the furniture in gray-green, dark gray, and rust carefully studied and balanced according to the different spaces. Likewise, the existing structural columns, mirrored on their narrow sides, are transformed into elegant strips of marble floating in space. The acoustic ceiling takes up the geometry of the oblique grid like a common thread that accompanies the visitor in all spaces. The materials play on the nobility of marble and brass and the warmth of wood and leather. Lightened velvets, wood coverings in warm tones, golden and modern accents, over-scaled plants and mirrors dress and transform the space. The soft lighting is directly inspired by Moroccan know-how in the perforated metal lanterns.
The primary objective of the decoration is to enlarge the limited space of the bedroom. The bathroom opens up to the maximum as the bedroom’s parquet floor, suitable for wet areas, extends to the shower. The wall in front of the bed is mirrored from floor to ceiling to give the illusion that the space is double the size. The leitmotif of the triangle is represented in the graphic patterning of the gray and white stone in the shower, in the delicate joints of the walnut wood panels, or in the topstitched velvet headboard. The hanging lamps bring the poetry of the flickering of traditional lanterns but here again redesigned in a contemporary way. In conclusion, the Hotel, sensitive to the identity of place and to the historical and cultural richness of Casablanca, offers a variety of different experiences which celebrate, each in their own way, the richness of the Moroccan palette of atmospheres, styles, materials and crafts all reinterpreted in a contemporary way.

Yabu Pushelberg unveils design for Moxy Downtown Los Angeles & AC Hotel Downtown Los Angeles - YA B U P U S H E L B E RG Acclaimed global design studio Yabu Pushelberg unveils the interiors of the newly opened dualhotel property, Moxy Downtown Los Angeles and AC Hotel Downtown Los Angeles. Offering two distinct hotel experiences under one roof, the property boasts 727 guestrooms with a total built-up area of 600,000 square feet. Yabu Pushelberg guided the design language of the first Moxy property in Los Angeles while elevating the AC brand in California. Leveraging Los Angeles’ position as a flourishing cultural hub, the studio conceived two unique yet cohesive design identities representing a standout addition to the local, evergrowing hospitality offering. George Yabu & Glenn Pushelberg comment, “We wanted to introduce the Moxy state of mind to California and develop the language of the AC
brand. It was a unique opportunity to create two parallel ways of seeing Los Angeles in style and spirit. California continues to attract people from around the world to experience its energy. It is a special place that has taught us how to dream, unwind, and nurture ourselves. There is a sense of freedom here that makes life sweeter, and we wanted to capture this spirit and infuse these moments throughout the design language of both hotels.”
Moxy Downtown Los Angeles Design Intention & Inspiration Building upon the success of Moxy Times Square and Moxy Chelsea, Lightstone – developer of six Moxy hotels in New York City and South Beach – tapped Yabu Pushelberg to design the first Moxy hotel in Los Angeles. Combining Moxy’s distinct and playful brand ethos with the adventurous spirit of California, Yabu

Pushelberg designed Moxy Downtown Los Angeles through the eyes of a desert nomad.
BAR MOXY
Lobby Lounge
Inspired by a roadside gas station, the Bar Moxy serves as a landmark along the guest journey. The bold, geometric bar constructed in vertical metal mesh functions as liquor cabinet, featuring a terraced counter and bespoke pattern symbolizing the speckles of stones in rolling sand. Bar stools are arranged in a gradient tone of plum to currant, while cocoon-like armchairs, and additional seating were designed to accommodate groups or individuals visiting for any occasion. An earth-toned color palette rich with warm neutrals contrasts with brass and black metal to provide definition and grit.
The lobby is an expansive space with an open ceiling and an eye-catching jumble of design elements,
The Studios
Drawing from Easy Rider, the 1969 cult film that elevated the counterculture and celebrated the great American road trip, the hotel’s interiors are sexy, irreverent, and playful, with references to biker culture, desert reptiles, and the gritty romance of the open road. This point of view crafts a world that champions bold choices and is inspired by the freedom of personal expression.
including a retro-style motorcycle and sidecar. Inspired by the colors of desert rock formations, the neutral rammed earth lobby walls contrast in both form and mood with reflective mirrored columns, mimicking the captivating experience of a desert mirage. The snake motif on the lobby custom-made carpet designed by Yabu Pushelberg leads to the adjacent Bar Moxy. Sofa groupings anchor the expansive lobby, featuring custom leather upholstery work inspired by motorcycle seating to evoke a cross-country trip through the California desert. Fun swing chairs and communal tables provide settings for guests to gather. The side tables are finished to resemble desert sands, while the lobby’s signature coffee table references desert driftwood.
Perched on the mezzanine, the studios offer inspiring views of the lobby below to help generate ideas and enhance creativity. The Lobby Lounge color story carries into The Studios, where transparent technicolor glass walls separate workspaces and rich earth tones run throughout the furniture to ground the space. Yabu Pushelberg designed custom modular furniture to allow the space to transform from private meeting environment to a relaxing secondary lounge by night. The mezzanine can transform into a dance floor with a custom mobile DJ booth. Neon artwork hints at the ability of the Studios to transform into a nightlife venue, infusing the workday with an energetic sense of playfulness.
Unique to Moxy Downtown Los Angeles, Yabu Pushelberg designed a comfortable motorcycle pouf to complement the ambiance of the local biker and motorcycle scene which guests can easily pick up to create seating arrangements tailored to their group size, large or small. Giving further dimension to the lobby, guest check-in is tucked away in an iridescent-tiled and surprisingly expansive alcove, intended to capture the moment when sunlight hits an oil spill on the desert road.

the spirit of sun-drenched stucco. Occupying the building’s 34th floor and boasting a 360-degree view of Los Angeles, the Sky Lobby Check-In introduces guests to the fluency of bespoke, handcrafted artistry found throughout the property. Yabu Pushelberg worked closely with artisan Dennis Lin to produce sculptural wooden totems custom to the AC Hotel Los Angeles. As with the rest of the property, nods to the Spanish hacienda aesthetic could be seen throughout the Sky Lobbies’ architectural use of framing and materiality, and the fluid, open connection between distinct settings. Five grand hand-carved wooden sculptures stand in place along the perimeter of the space, providing a first glance of the artist’s love to work with wood and natural mediums.
Library Lounge
Upon entry, guests are welcomed by a custom copper-colored mosaic wall, inspired by the glow of a desert sunset. Yabu Pushelberg leaned into this warm, crimson-and-cedar palette and worked with materials such as copper that gently reflect and refract light. The luminous effect creates a welcoming embrace of a soft, warm bed after a long day of travel. The guestroom headboards are made from distressed green leather, telling the stylish story of a well-worn leather motorcycle jacket. Custom handlebar sculptures hanging on the wall provide a modern interpretation of taxidermy.
A dramatic, black hot roast steel fireplace defines the Library Lounge, enticing guests to find respite by the fire. The sculptural fireplace serves as the heart of the room, surrounded by intimate corner seating to promote socialization and gathering. A locale for comfort and sophistication, the Lounge views of the Los Angeles landscape are framed by rows of hand-carved sculptures, curated by Yabu Pushelberg and showcased from floor to ceiling. Celebrating rich earth tones and textural finishes, The Library Lounge’s furniture palette seamlessly communicates with the surrounding shades of wood, which envelop the entire space. To further define the spatiality of the Library Lounge, Yabu Pushelberg coupled round, spherical lounge chairs and L-shaped sofas with contemporary arched floor lamps to line the perimeter of the space.
AC HOTEL DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES
Sky Lobby Bar & Terrace
Design Intention & Inspiration
Stationed adjacent to the Library Lounge, The Sky Lobby Bar invites the Los Angeles skyline into the space through a windowed wall, reflected in the mirror-cladded columns and the large metal pendant over the bar. A vestibule for entertainment,, the Sky Lobby Bar encompasses the design trademarks of AC Los Angeles through its palette of colors, textures, and materiality. The Sky Lobby Terrace was designed to spark togetherness. Comprising a lounge, outdoor bar, and dining area, the terrace plays host to a range of experiences, accommodating a wide range of occasions, from informal meet-ups to special celebrations.
Guestrooms
Combining the excellent hospitality AC Hotels is renowned for with the artistic soul of Los Angeles, Yabu Pushelberg imagined the new AC Hotel Downtown Los Angeles as an artist’s home. The studio brought the Spanish roots of the AC brand into conversation with the Hispanic heritage of South California, envisioning the interiors as a creative space for the traveling artist. Guests can find artworks throughout the hotel with the goal of translating their journey to their suite as a tour of an artist’s studio.
Satellite Lobby & Sky Lobby Check-In Designed as the foyer of an artist’s home, the Satellite Lobby provides guests a glimpse to the artist’s point of view. Nods to Spanish architecture can be seen in the textured plaster walls, evoking
Art installations and lush flora permeate the space, immersing guests in the qualities of a flourishing garden retreat.
- 76 -
Guestrooms The hotel’s guestrooms are ethereal, calming, and simple, conceived to be as inviting and familiar as the spare room in the home of a creative friend. Oak lines the space from floor to ceiling, presenting an upscale residential feeling, and exhibited artworks represent the artist’s most oeuvre. Contemporary and residentially-inspired furniture in clean, high-contrast materials evoke feelings of modern ease and relaxation. Yabu Pushelberg designed custom carpets for the guest rooms that reflect the geometric pattern and color story found throughout the hotel, while possum birch wood flooring incorporates a cooler tonality appropriate for rest and rejuvenation.

As Los Angeles continues to offer unique storytelling and new perspectives on culture and entertainment, Yabu Pushelberg joins the conversation with its distinct narrative-based creative approach, positioning the new Moxy Downtown Los Angeles & AC Hotel Downtown Los Angeles at the forefront of the flourishing hospitality landscape.

Leverage the potential of innovative POS Technology - S TA R In response to the huge technological shift in recent years when it comes to dine-in, delivery and takeaway, venues are under pressure to meet ever greater demand for convenience, choice and flexible ordering in an increasingly digital landscape. In order to thrive in what has become a progressively challenging operating environment, businesses can take advantage of unique and flexible solutions by investing in innovative POS technology and software tools. Without a doubt, consumption habits are changing and eroding traditional ordering patterns. Moreover, the ubiquity of ordering platforms and delivery services is making consumers increasingly discerning in terms of the ordering systems they choose to use. With food and beverages being ordered on mobile apps or Click & Collect sites, the hospitality industry has had to adapt and turn to technologies in order to facilitate the shift. On the upside, this has provided new opportunities for operators to diversify and boost revenue. Flexible and innovative Cloud technology allows businesses to successfully address challenges and opportunities in an omnichannel world. The rise in online ordering across multiple channels is
resulting in greater demand for Cloud technologies such as Star CloudPRNT™. Available across a variety of Star thermal receipt and label printers as well as matrix kitchen printers, Star provides the largest range of multi-platform remote Cloud receipt and online ordering printers available today. In particular, Star’s mC-Print™ series with builtin CloudPRNT technology is capable of printing remote orders and local print jobs via USB, LAN or Bluetooth connectivity for both mobile and fixed POS. Further demonstrating its versatility, this printer can be used both front of house and in the kitchen thanks to its IPX2 splashproof design and buzzer feature. As the rise in online ordering across multiple channels is resulting in greater demand for selfservice kiosks for ordering food and beverages, a printer that is equipped for remote printing of customer collection and delivery orders directly from a web server to connected printers located anywhere is a key requirement. Moreover, with remote functionality the printer can be managed from any location. Easy to install and maintain, the packaged mC-Print with its range of connectivity

activity including reliable tracking of print jobs with notification of device status changes, barcode scans, new device connections to a group, etc. Additional printers and peripherals can simply be added without the need for server upgrades, further enhancing the versatility of the service.
options provides a versatile solution for a variety of kiosk applications. For labelling, the ability to print different sized and types of labels from one easy-to-use device including variable length food and allergy labels, nutrition information as well as food delivery labels and bag seals from web-based apps or local services is essential. The Star mC-Label printer offers the ideal solution thanks to its ability to print on a wide range of liner-free media including low adhesive ‘re-stick’ labels as well as high adhesive permanent and semipermanent labels. It is also designed for traditional liner pre-sized labels and continuous label rolls and receipt paper. With customer orders sent directly to the printer from an online ordering service or app, Star CloudPRNT increases order accuracy and eliminates the need for an additional tablet in the restaurant or bar. Moreover, Star CloudPRNT enabled printers are able to receive orders from multiple channels including fixed POS systems, mobile devices and tablets, networked as well as Cloud based systems which results in an efficient ordering and transaction process for any hospitality business.
With no restrictions imposed by cabling and local networks, or limited Bluetooth ranges, StarPrinter.Online provides businesses worldwide with a central point to receive and manage orders anywhere with Internet access from customers using any kind of device in any location. Star partners with a wide range of hospitality software companies globally who have integrated Star CloudPRNT technology. Dil Hussain, CEO at UK-based hospitality software provider Dines, explains how the technology helps to expand their offering to venues and the key benefits it provides: “With StarPrinter.Online, our clients are no longer limited to local networking and short ranged Bluetooth connections. Whatever their setup, wherever they may be in the world, StarPrinter. Online can support them. It’s never been easier to manage orders, no matter which channel they come from, and we have seen this technology thrive in a range of venues. With data on printer status, jobs in the queue, last online timestamps (and even if there’s a paper jam!), debugging issues and managing multiple printers, completely online, is now effortless thanks to StarPrinter.Online.” Star’s experienced technical and integration teams can provide tailored advice for venues of all sizes.
For venues that prefer a fully managed CloudPRNT service, Star has introduced StarPrinter.Online, a dedicated service for businesses to manage the printer estate with minimal setup time and cost as well as near zero integration. Within minutes the receipt, label or order printer is connected to the online ordering system and can receive orders from a wide range of locations, allowing printing direct from an ordering website or even via email; order emails can be forwarded directly to the chef’s printer for preparation. Providing enhanced online visibility of connectivity and print jobs, the service offers device management via an online dashboard to equip venues with an overview of all devices and

Elephant Gin releases limited edition gin, African Explorer - ELEPHANT GIN In celebration of their 10-year anniversary, Elephant Gin (www.elephant-gin.com) will release a special edition this October that focuses on its key values and passions: exploration, African botanicals, elephant conservation and G&T sundowners. When forming Elephant Gin, Tessa and Robin Gerlach were inspired by the Sundowner experience whilst exploring the wildlife of Africa; when creating their lauded London Dry Gin in 2013, they were keen to use botanicals from the continent that they’d fallen in love with, using an innovative blend of 14 botanicals including rare African ingredients. Named the African Explorer (40% ABV), Elephant Gin’s new limited-edition celebration gin further highlights African ingredients from across the continent, using freshly sourced aromatic buchu leaves from South Africa, with a flavour, similar to blackcurrant, as well as Monodora (African nutmeg), white ginger from Cameroon, Sumbala seeds from Burkina Faso, the savannah’s “super fruit” Baobab, and Lion’s Tail which introduces a sharp floral note, among other botanicals including bergamot, grapefruit and mint, creating a gin that is bursting with citrusy and herbal flavours. The African Explorer is bursting with distinctive citrus and minty-cassis notes from African Buchu and grapefruit with a herbal botanical backbone and subtle notes of fresh ginger. Best enjoyed as a G&T for sundowner times while mapping out a new adventure. Due to the oils of the buchu leaves, used in the African Explorer, the gin emanates an alluring green hue, further emphasising the botanical’s presence and unique addition to the gin’s flavour profile. Having recently become B Corp certified, Elephant Gin places environmental sustainability at the core of its operations. The eco glass bottle is 15% lighter saving 60 tons worth of C02 per year plus uses 65% recycled glass. Each bottle is topped with a traditional cork stopper, decorated with a gold embossed label, laced with illustrations of luscious vegetation hinting at the rich botanicals contained within, it’s decorated with a label containing a handwritten issue number and the name of one of the threatened tuskers that Elephant Gin supports;
the bottle is adorned by traditional glass Maasai beads all handmade by Maasai tribal women in Kenya, with handy loops from which to hang your sunglasses. Through the newly established Elephant Gin Foundation, 15% of bottle profits from this limited edition will be donated to the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) and their work in protecting the critically endangered African Forest Elephant based in West and Central Africa. AWF began working in Cameroon in 2015 and has made a longterm commitment to protecting the wildlife and biodiversity in the Dja landscape. The UK’s first premium plant-based deli filling range - Z E S S / SYS CO G B Answering the growing demand for premium plantbased options, Zess has collaborated with Sysco GB to unveil Zess Explore, the UK’s pioneering range of plant-based deli fillers, handcrafted at Fresh Direct’s specialist production unit Fresh Kitchen. Zess, a UK-based start-up that specialises in helping people make smarter food choices, has joined forces with Sysco GB to create and launch Zess Explore, the UK’s first range of plant-based deli fillers. The new products, which are being hand-prepared at Fresh Kitchen which is part of Fresh Direct’s “Food Village” in Bicester, were created in response to the lack of inspiring, ready-to-serve, plantbased fillings that are currently available, and are healthier and more sustainable than a typical meat-based option. There are three flavoursome products in the range Roasted Sicilian Caponata, Chipotle & Corn Veggie Barbacoa and Sweet Potato & Butternut Dhansak, which are designed to be used across a range of popular choices including sandwiches, jacket potatoes, pizza topping, tacos, salads, wraps and more... Hiren Umradia, CEO at Zess, said: “Zess was born out of a desire to revolutionise food choices for health and the environment. We observed a gap in the market for exciting, ready-to-serve plant-based deli fillings, as there are very few options available without the hassle of creating something yourself. In busy kitchens, there simply isn’t time to develop the exciting plant-based products that people want. This often means that those wanting a plantbased option face boring choices that simply don’t inspire them. With Fresh Kitchen, we’re introducing a game-changing combination of exciting flavours, hand-produced to high standards that are not just healthy, but tantalisingly delicious, through the nation’s largest wholesaler, Brakes.”
product, it’s a product that will proudly stand up to any deli-style filler, catering to vegans, vegetarians and flexitarians.” The ready-to-serve deli fillers bring together a range of premium flavours that have an authentic taste. • Italian - Roasted Sicilian Caponata, which delivers authentic Italian veggie goodness, with a winning combination of slow-roasted tomatoes, fire-roasted aubergine, capers, basil and black olives. • Mexican - Chipotle & Corn Veggie Barbacoa is made with genuine Mexican adobo, chipotle chilli peppers, oregano and organic plant-powered protein, giving it a vibrant and smoky, taste profile. CC
• Indian - Sweet Potato & Butternut Dhansak, combines authentic spice blends, green chilli and organic plant-powered protein, creating a deep, warm, and fragrant taste profile with creamy and cleansing citrus finish. The revolutionary product range is launching this September in Brakes, with an enticing introductory promotional price of £9.99 for a 1kg tub, before trade discounts. With Zess’s dedication to improving food choices and Sysco GB’s extensive distribution network, this partnership marks a transformative step in making plant-based foods both delectable and accessible.
Adam Swan, Strategy and Commercial Director at Fresh Direct, added: “Fresh Kitchen creates fantastic recipes that save time and resource in busy kitchens, so when Hiren came to us with his vision for plant-based deli fillers we were delighted to produce and distribute them. We believe we’ve created a recipe which isn’t just a great plant-based
