The Elizabeth Park Hotel Budapest, a Ritz-Carlton Partner Hotel Opens In The Heart Of The Hungarian Capital

T

he Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C. is delighted to announce that, as from the 1st September The Elizabeth Park Hotel, Budapest, a Ritz-Carlton Partner Hotel will be managed by the company and following an extensive renovation program, the hotel will be re-launched as The Ritz-Carlton, Budapest in Spring 2016.

The study from new web-to-print service Avery WePrint has revealed the products and services the British public prefers to purchase from small and independent businesses. Food and drink are high on the list with restaurant meals, fresh produce, takeaway coffee and food-to-go all featuring in the top ten. Happier purchasing from a small business

The centrally located, 198-room hotel will undergo a comprehensive renovation which includes the addition of The RitzCarlton Club, new luxury suites and fresh concepts at the hotel’s dining outlets.

Over 80% of Brits reported feelings of happiness or contentment when they purchased from a small business. This figure dropped to just 53% feeling this way after purchasing from a large company or chain. A quarter of Brits said choosing to buy from a small business actually made them feel good about themselves.

“It is an honour to bring The Ritz-Carlton experience to Hungary at the heart of this vibrant capital city. We are looking forward to opening the newest European hotel in Budapest in 2016,” said Herve Humler, President and Chief Operating Officer.

Fiona Mills, of Avery WePrint who commissioned the research, commented on what the findings mean for the UK’s small and independent food and drink sector:

“We are delighted to be partnering with the Ritz-Carlton for such an exquisite property to build on our unique portfolio of hotels. We are bringing together two of the best names in the business, both dedicated to offering world-class luxury and hospitality. We look forward to welcoming guests to experience the renewed property in early 2016,” said Mohammed Al Habtoor, Vice-Chairman and CEO, Al Habtoor Group, the hotel’s owner.

“The research shows businesses of all sizes and sectors can learn from one another, what’s important as a business grows is not to lose sight of the values and service levels that were there in the beginning. Customers say they feel valued by small companies and that’s something every business should be trying to emulate.”

Marcus A. Loevenforst has been appointed as the General Manager to lead the team of Ladies and Gentlemen at this historic location and oversee the transformation of the hotel into the first Hungarian property for The Ritz-Carlton portfolio. Mr. Loevenforst, originally from Germany, brings more than 23 years of luxury hospitality experience spanning several continents and locations, including Stuttgart, Miami, San Francisco, Cleveland and Toronto, and with The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company in Berlin, Bahrain, Moscow and Naples. Most recently his role was as Vice President, Operations for EDITION hotels. The Elizabeth Park Hotel, Budapest is located on St Erzsebet Square with commanding views over St Stephen’s Basilica in the heart of the city, only a short distance from the business district and shopping areas. The Hungarian capital is home to an extensive World Heritage site, including the banks of the River Danube, the Buda Castle quarter, Andrassy Avenue and the Millennium Underground railway, the second-oldest metro line in the world. It is one of Europe’s most beautiful cities and a popular tourist destination known as “The City of Spas” with many natural thermal and medicinal springs.

Personalised service The personalised service offered by small and independent businesses was cited as the number one benefit of buying from them, with over 60% of Brits agreeing with this. This was closely followed by good customer service, feeling valued and being able to deal with the same staff. Avery WePrint’s Fiona Mills continued: “Independent cafes, restaurants and food retailers are often well placed to offer the flexible, friendly service customers are calling out for and that’s something these organisations should be proud of. We want to encourage independent outlets to celebrate their status as a small business, it’s something very special. So if you’re proudly local, independent and passionate about it, make sure you communicate this in everything you do – from window signage and wall displays to takeaway packaging, menus and labelling.” Top ten products and services Brits prefer to purchase from a small business: • Haircut • Restaurant Meal • Fresh produce e.g. fruit and vegetables • Takeaway tea and coffee • Greetings cards, gifts and presents • Car repairs and services • Books, newspapers and magazines • Snacks and food to go • Jewellery • Artwork

Support still needed for British beer as sales disappoint An early Easter, and the impact of the World Cup 2014, resulted in disappointing beer sales in the second quarter of 2015, according to the latest figures from the British Beer & Pub Association’s Quarterly Beer Barometer. Total sales were 5.6 per cent lower in Q2 compared with the same quarter in 2014. When it comes to the latest annual trend, the decline was lower, with off-trade sales down 1.9 per cent over the 12 months to June 2015, and on trade down 2.9 per cent. Total sales were down 2.4 per cent on the previous 12 months. The BBPA is pointing out that Easter was in early April in 2015, meaning that some brewery sales may have shifted into Q1 compared to 2014, when Easter was in late April. Furthermore, the football World Cup took place in June 2014, boosting sales in that period – Q2 sales this year, remained above those in Q2 2013.

Wake Up Wonderful – to the new Premier Inn TV campaign

P

remier Inn has revealed a £25 million multichannel advertising campaign – kicking off with a new ad creative which sees Lenny Henry feature in his seventh advert for the UK’s most loved hotel chain and showcases new material from Katie Melua. This comes in addition to the £140 million planned investment across Premier Inn for 2015, including the completion of an estate-wide roll out of brand new luxury Premier Inn Hypnos beds. Wonderful Life

Wake Up Wonderful – to the new Premier Inn TV campaign The track, Wonderful Life was originally performed by British singer Black and has been re-recorded for the advert by Katie Melua (above), to demonstrate the new campaign brand message – Wake Up Wonderful. Proceeds from the sale of the single will be donated to Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity as well as The Children’s Hospital Charity, which supports Sheffield Children’s Hospital. To support the launch of the single a music video has also been filmed and will be launched alongside the single on 29th August.

The TV advert, created by creative agency Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&Y and directed by Simon Ratigan, captures picturesque scenes across the UK set to the sound of Wonderful Life. The ad kicks off a multi channel campaign, including TV, online advertising, email marketing, PR and social media (Frank PR). The campaign will also feature radio; the first time the brand has used this medium.

The advert showcases a variety of morning settings, all shot within a 5-mile radius of Premier Inn locations and filmed using an agile filming technique. Scenes range from a horse racing track with mist in the air, to the sprinklers preparing the pitch for a football match on a winter’s day and seagulls setting off on their morning flight. It ends with Lenny leaving a Premier Inn hotel ready to embrace the day, all to the mellow sound of Katie Melua’s ‘Wonderful Life’.

New creative direction The new Wake Up Wonderful campaign takes the brand in a new direction creatively, with the majority of the scenes set outside the hotel, and showcasing a much more emotive portrayal of the brand’s touch points. The campaign will continue to drive home the brand’s comfort message and the importance of a good night’s sleep. The advert will air on ITV during the highly anticipated return of the X Factor and will run until 2016. Russell Braterman, Brand Marketing Director for Premier Inn, said: “With our new creative direction, our latest campaign emphasises the emotional connections between having a good night’s sleep and waking up wonderful. The ad encapsulates that moment, early in the morning when the day is filled with optimism and excitement, which we hope is how all our guests feel when they wake up after a great night’s sleep in a Premier Inn.

The winning four-courses of steak will then be tasted by the astute judging panel in the semi-final and final. The winner will then be crowned with a final ‘peoples vote’. During supper the France vs Italy match will also be screened in the M Bar. A world cup of steak menu will be on offer at M from 19th September – 31st October, where guests can opt for 3,4 or 6 Nation menus. From £35.00.

Fill Your Rooms With Sky

I

n recent times, guests’ expectations of in-room entertainment have changed a lot; they are now demanding and expecting even more from their hotel room viewing. This gives inroom entertainment a key role to play in increasing customer satisfaction, which according to research carried out by independent research company TNS, 74% of hoteliers count amongst their top three KPIs . Many peoples’ homes now contain much better technology than the standard hotel room – large LCD or Plasma screens with surround sound, either Sky or another form of pay TV, often in multiple rooms, as well as the ability to watch on a tablet or computer. Providing this level of quality in-room entertainment can be the difference between filling a room and losing out to a rival venue. Sky In-Room provides an opportunity for hotels to recreate that top-quality home-from-home experience in their hotel rooms. It operates like an in-home Sky TV service, giving guests full control over the content they watch, with an unbeatable range of must-see movies, top entertainment, live sporting action and

news - all in HD. Hotels can choose between a range of channel packs, giving them the ability to offer Sky’s full range of content - including seven dedicated Sky Sports channels, a range of award-winning entertainment channels such as Sky Atlantic, news and music channels. Access to reliable and fast internet is another expectation in hotels. A good WiFi connection encourages guests to spend more time at their hotel, which can translate into additional revenue from minibar, room service, restaurant, bar and even spa sales as they check emails, spend time on social media and surf the web. Sky’s free WiFi service, powered by The Cloud, provides consistent and efficient WiFi in the most cost-effective manner. From business travellers to holidaymakers, Sky offers hoteliers a range of flexible products and solutions to meet the needs of their guests. From an unrivalled choice of entertainment to seamless connectivity from The Cloud, it’s all part of delivering the best experience for your guests and therefore driving revenue for your business.

Hilton Hotel & Spa

The Opening Of Hilton’s Hotel & Spa marks the final stage in the redevelopment of Hampshire Cricket’s The Ageas Bowl. Innovative hotel design sets new standards for international cricket grounds.

F

or over a hundred years, Southampton city centre boasted its own county cricket ground, the home of Hampshire. However, by the 1990s the historic ground was ageing and becoming increasingly hemmed in by the growth of the city around it. In a decisive break with the past, Hampshire Cricket Ltd made a bold move to relocate the cricket ground and construct a brand new stadium. The first games were played at the new venue in 2001 and international cricket arrived in 2006. But the company was not content to leave it at that. The Hampshire Cricket board set an ambitious goal: to become the first test ground to achieve the England and Wales Cricket Board’s standard for model test ground status. The criteria for this are exacting, with minimum requirements set for playing facilities, spectator seating, accommodation, hospitality, press

and media facilities, public transport, parking and ancillary services. So when the Hampshire Cricket board appointed hotel experts EPR Architects to masterplan the redevelopment of Southampton’s the Ageas (then Rose) Bowl, EPR knew the project demanded a truly exceptional scheme. Nick Rayner, Associate Director and project architect, explained, “The redevelopment marked a unique opportunity to create a world-class sporting venue to a holistic design that would set it apart from traditional grounds with their eclectic mix of stands and facilities added on through the decades.” EPR led a team of specialist designers to meet this challenging brief within a comprehensive masterplan. Their solution is truly innovative. Ensuring excellence in both accommodation and press and media facilities, EPR has designed a hotel that wraps around

the stadium bowl. The pitch-facing bedrooms are constructed in such a way that they convert to hospitality and spectator use on major match days, and the second-floor central function room becomes a world-class media centre for press and broadcasting. The building can therefore operate as a hotel for the vast majority of the year, but the requisite facilities are available on match days and other sporting occasions. This highly flexible dual-purpose use makes the Ageas Bowl fundamentally unique in terms of both its hotel and stadium design. Such a revolutionary approach led to EPR being shortlisted for Leisure Architect of the Year. Having conceived a pioneering functional solution, EPR were mindful to retain a holistic approach to the entire site to preserve its existing natural landscaping. The hotel and stands have therefore been positioned

Hilton Hotel & Spa

to continue seamlessly round the stadium to form a low-level simple roofline, in contrast to the existing iconic pavilion building with its tensile roof and masts. The external timber louvre screen facades give a softly curving organic shape to the bowl and provide continuity across the various building uses in hospitality, spectator seating and hotel. Cricketing aficionados will appreciate the references to the axis of the bowler’s arm in this positioning, with a form that reflects the footprint of the stands and pavilion, rather like two opposing teams. The choice of materials was inspired by the site’s locality and heritage, with the hotel drawing on the existing palette of steel and timber materials already in use. The effect of the building’s external appearance, together with carefully integrated landscaping, enhances the site’s natural parkland setting. A measure of the success of the design came in 2014 when Test Match Special’s Jonathan Agnew tweeted a picture of the view from the Northern End, captioned: “one of the prettiest grounds, now.” The project has been brought about in no small part through an innovative collaboration between Hampshire Cricket and its local authority, Eastleigh Borough Council which is also a designated Beacon Council for sustainability. As such, the client and

design team were conscious throughout the process to ensure that the project met the Council’s aspirations for sustainable design, being one of the high-profile sites within the borough. The project adopted the BREEAM approach for assessment of sustainable criteria and this was rigorously applied across the whole site. Integral to the sustainable design is the extended 18-hole golf course. Not only does this retain the connection with the ground’s parkland setting, but its lakes and water features – as well as adding visual and playing interest to golfers – form part of the site’s water management strategy. This is achieved through attenuating rainwater run-off from the buildings in the catchment area which is then collected for irrigation. Together with the hotel’s landscaping, the golf course design carefully conserves and enhances the habitat for the site’s important flora and fauna and ecological diversity. As with all major sporting venues, transporting large numbers of spectators on and off the site efficiently, and providing for their catering and welfare needs during their stay – as well as ensuring they have an uninterrupted view of the playing field – is a complex requirement. Developing the infrastructure through the construction of additional roads was therefore

the World Of Hospitality

09

the first phase of the project. Phase two came with the construction of the stands in the summer of 2010. The final part of the masterplan was the opening of the Hilton hotel and spa in May 2015. Providing 171 guestrooms, executive lounge, luxury spa facilities, signature chef restaurant (the choice of Ian Botham’s Beefy’s has a certain resonance for the venue), 700seat conference and banqueting facilities, it boasts spectacular views overlooking the famous cricket ground. Nick Rayner says, “Our design for the hotel and spa is the final piece. It completes the holistic and cohesive design of the cricket ground, and brings a luxury hotel with high-quality business, leisure and hospitality facilities to this world-class sporting destination.” EPR’s masterplan was instrumental in securing Test Match Cricket for the first time at the ground in 2011. Sporting fixtures continue with two one-day internationals in 2015. Hampshire Chairman, Rod Bransgrove says: “The staging of these two matches is fantastic news for everyone involved with Hampshire Cricket and the Ageas Bowl. The games will be the first internationals at the ground with the complete Hilton Hotel so I’m sure they will both be fantastic occasions.”

10

the World Of Hospitality

True to the company’s bold ambitions, Hampshire Cricket now has a state-of-the-art cricket ground in a completed stadium with a great match-day atmosphere, and a spectacular hotel at the heart of the year-round business and leisure destination. Falconer Chester Hall’s interior design combines organic forms and patterns reminiscent of the New Forest with the rich hued timbers and leathers of the site’s sporting past, finally adding a dash of the panache and excitement of 1920s aviation. The lounge and restaurant have a classic look; parquet flooring and wooden panelling give a deep warm feel to the space. Leathers and heavy drapes, mixed with metal work redolent of vintage luggage, have influenced the detailing to the bar and fixed furniture. A sumptuous colour palette and opulent lighting define intimate spaces whilst leather bar stools, table lighting, dark woodwork and accents of stainless steel and glass add a touch of glamour. In the Executive Lounge, an area for Hilton Honours and executive guests, the use of leathers and bold colours is continued but lightened and freshened with soft greys and warm whites.

Hilton Hotel & Spa

Mark Doohan, Director of Falconer Chester Hall Architects, interior designers for the hotel, said of the restaurant and executive lounge: “Our design brings together reflections of the site’s sporting heritage, its historic connections and the beautiful countryside that surrounds the city, creating a luxurious and inviting space to welcome guests to the Hilton at the Ageas Bowl.” Project Name: The Ageas Bowl, Hampshire, Stadium Masterplan and Hotel Address: Botley Road, West End, Hampshire Borough: Eastleigh Full postcode: SO30 3XH Client/Developer: The Ageas Bowl / Southampton Hotels Ltd Value: £45m Start Date:2006 Date of completion: 2015 Status: Completion April 2015 No of Storeys: 6 (Hotel) Size (sqm): 64 acres (site), 1350m2 (hotel building) Form of Procurement: Design and Build Services Provided: Masterplanning, Architect

Hotel Vincci Gala

Hotel Vincci Gala Barcelona

T

he Hotel Vincci Gala is a four-star hotel with 78 rooms, bar, restaurant, meeting rooms, and various terraces, situated in a period building in Barcelona´s Eixample district. The design of the new Hotel Vincci Gala is marked by two requirements. Firstly, the obligation of the Monument Protection Department of Barcelona to conserve both the facade and a large white marble staircase in the inside of the building and secondly, the name of the Hotel: "Gala" referring to the wife and muse of the surrealist painter Salvador Dalí. Gala and Dalí formed an unlikely pair and similarly, the project reconciles multiple contrasts between the old and the new, the discrete the extravagant, the elegant and the informal. The color gold is the keynote of this hotel that is repeated in different shades and applications, both on the external facade and the interior of the building, combined with organic shapes and contrasts between light and dark. The main material is metal in contrast to the stone and marble of the original architecture.

In addition to architecture and interior design, the TBI office is also responsible for lighting, decoration and graphic design which have achieved a complete and homogeneous design up to the last detail. Common areas: On the ground floor the most common areas of the hotel are located. These are mainly divided into three spaces: the lobby, the lounge area and the bar, each of which has its own personality. The spacious lobby is characterized by the contrast of the large existing white marble staircase with a darker, contemporary and stylish interior designed to restage the staircase and to further emphasize her resplendence. The hotel bar is situated under the central staircase, forming a rectangular box fully encased with anodized gold expanded aluminum panels. A continuous element of black Corian frames the opening of the bar and forms a contrast between its organic shape in deep black and the rectangular gold box. In the transition to the bar, the pavement changes from black marble to light oak flooring to create a warm atmosphere fusing modern with old and elegant with informal. The lounge area is situated beside the central

staircase. Wooden covered pillars form a barcode frame a protected and comfortable space with a private atmosphere. The restaurant with the breakfast buffet and two meeting rooms is located in the basement. A flexible system of mobile partition panels enable the space to be divided as necessary, adapting it to the required use. Central atrium: The central atrium is the heart of the hotel and permits natural light to sweep through the building. Golden aluminum chains hang like an enormous veil over the glass balustrades. Dark linear patterns are integrated in order to create a singular optical effect. In addition, strings of LED light have been integrated into the hand rails making the golden curtain shine. The unique geometric design of the curtains has been extended to the doors of the rooms and the patterns on the flooring in the hallways, creating together the sensation of a virtual space, characterized by the superposition of light, transparency, texture and the golden color.

Hotel Vincci Gala

Main facade: The main facade of the hotel is divided into two parts, the old neoclassical facade and a new 3-storey extension. The facade of the extension consists of a curtain wall and a layer of panels of expanded metal and creates a dynamic facade with a composition of openings and variations of orientations of the expanded metal that is enclosed by the existing cornice and a new top section. The golden shade and vertical openings creates a unit with the existing facade. Inner courtyard: In the inner courtyard terraces are located on different levels. A large terrace on the first floor, which is reached by the central staircase, serves as a lounge terrace with sofas, armchairs and an outdoor bar. On the ground floor there is a terrace with smaller dimensions and with direct access from the hotel bar and in the basement a patio provides natural light to the restaurant and meeting rooms. Hotel rooms: Most rooms follow the same distribution concept. A z-shaped element made of laminated dark anthracite colored wood, integrated headboard, armoire and wall covering. Gold and gray tones in combination with indirect linear lighting give the rooms a warm and elegant atmosphere.

Illumination: Illumination is an essential part of the project and is resolved by indirect linear lighting and decorative suspended lamps, with special attention to the tone and color of the light. A lighting control system allows the creation of light scenes and helps to save electricity is installed in the rooms.

Also recycled materials and coatings with low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions were used to improve indoor air quality. The Reduction of electricity consumption is achieved by using LED lightning in most of the building and a control and management system that facilitates control of power consumption of the building at anytime.

Graphic design: To resolve the problem of different languages of the hotel guests graphic design contains a reduced signage of pictograms designed especially for this hotel, inspired by the handwriting of Salvador DalĂ.

One of the points with the greatest impact on energy consumption of a hotel is the generation of domestic hot water. Obviating the use of the standard solution with solar panels, TBI proposed to the client an innovative system of cogeneration based on heat pumps that use natural gas as fuel for the air conditioning of the hotel. By using a heat exchanger the heat produced by the motor can be reused for generating hot water.

Sustainability: The goal of the project was to exploit the full potential by creating a sustainable hotel, both through architectural elements and system installations. The atrium joins all levels and provides the building with natural light. Special attention has been given to the design of the inner courtyard facade which is orientated to the south. Using prefabricated GRC (glass reinforced concrete) panels, a facade was created with small openings, balconies, awnings and sun protection panels - all of which are architectural elements commissioned to protect the facade of the solar radiation and prevent the overheating of rooms.

Architects: TBI Architecture & Engineering

Thus achieving a significant reduction in CO2 emissions from 305 to 85 kg CO2 / m2 year and energy consumption from 503,8 to 144, 5 kWh / m2 year, relative to a reference building with the same characteristics. So the Vincci Hotel Gala is one of the first hotels in Barcelonalabeled with the building energy rating "A" www.teknobau.com

Hôtel Royal

Hôtel Royal Paris

H

otel Royal, located in the heart of Paris, next to the neighbourhood of Saint Germain, has been designed by Emma Donnersberg Interiors and Michel Amar. Being very elegant and cozy, the design remains contemporary. The entrance gold desk married with a black and white floor and black walls, give it a fifty’s look, making it very chic. In the living room, we find that feeling back with lighter colors, such as a clear blue on the walls. The Moroccan rug, revisited in a contemporary look, is stunning and frames the decor. Finally, the dining room has the feeling of a garden with abstract clear leaves painting on the walls. About E DONNERSBERG INTERIORS E DONNERSBERG INTERIORS was established in 2008 by founder Emma Donnersberg so that her unique style of global aesthetics may be shared

with clients on both continents. Emma began her venture because of her passion for beauty, comfort and elegance which allows a younger clientele to experience the sophistication of an earlier time and provides more established clients with the sexy freshness of high energy environments. Emma Donnersberg approaches design as if she were painting a blank canvas, using spatial organization and an array of colors and textures to generate the highest level of luxury. Emma’s aesthetic has developed through her countless worldwide travels and each design project includes unique aspects of her Asian, American, Eastern and European experiences. The Retina Range

Lighting the way to hospitality Two innovative new fittings, the Retina and the LEDBar, offer very versatile solutions for a wide variety of lighting applications. Designed to mix function with aesthetics, they capitalise on the rapid advances in lighting technology. They have been launched by London-based Light Projects, a leader in the innovative design, manufacture and supply of lighting fittings and accessories for interior, exterior, display and hospitality lighting applications. The Retina is the latest track fitting from Light Products. This stylised fitting is available in two sizes; the smaller Retina I in 8W or 15W and larger Retina II in 25W, 30W or 35W. Both offer various beam angles and colour temperatures of 2700K, 3000K, 4000K or 5000K. They feature a CRI of 80 or with high CRI versions available going up to 97 CRI and versions are suitable for use with almost all dimming systems, including Dali, 1-10V and Triac. Designed to work on existing tracks from all the major suppliers, they are ideal for new projects or to retrofit and adapt into existing schemes. Importantly, one of this fitting’s design features gives almost unlimited adjustability enabling it to swivel and turn 350° both horizontally and vertically while the centre of gravity remains central to the transformer track itself. This ingenious detail not only makes it aesthetically pleasing to the eye but ensures minimal torque is applied to the track, thereby increasing the life cycle for both.

hospitality@lightprojects.co.uk Project: Prince Edward Theatre Lighting Design : Pritchard Themis Product used: Lensed LEDBar Used to highlight the building’s art deco arches and high level architectural detailing

Both feature a cleverly designed accessory holder within its body to house scrims, louvres and filters. This negates the need for unsightly external attachments, making it a versatile choice for all kinds of applications, from display lighting through to accent and floodlighting. It is available in black, white and silver. The LEDBar is a family of Linear LED Systems designed to enhance architectural details, objects and spaces and to ensure a consistent quality of light. StatFlux, CrossFlux, LEDBar Nano, Mini and Lensed are available in custom lengths and can be joined for continuous illumination without blackspots and with optional dimming available. Statflux and CrossFlux are both surface mounted, while the latter has the additional capability of altering its colour temperature via DMX, ranging from a warm 2600K to a very cool 6700K. This is perfect for scene setting in hotel, restaurant or bar environments and also for seasonal displays in hotel retail outlets as well as offering decorative and daylight enhancements. The LEDBar Nano, Mini and Lensed are all compact surface mounted or recessed designs allowing for easy installation within confined spaces and with a robust aluminium heatsink which provides excellent thermal management.

Restaurant Ikanos

A New Architectural Language With Mediterranean Accents

I

kanos, an Old Montreal restaurant with Mediterranean flair and the little brother to Tasso, the Saint-Denis Street institution with an expansive vision, officially opened on October 14, 2014 at 112 McGill Street. For his new Mediterranean-inflected restaurant, the ambitious owner chose an imposing space on McGill, in an old warehouse that had more recently served as an artist’s studio. He selected blazysgérard to take on the challenge of crafting a strong identity for the space. The concept is based on a reinterpretation of the characteristic architecture of Greece and neighbouring countries. The goal was to develop an architectural language that would meet the client’s requirements while remaining consistent with the theme, without becoming a mere pastiche or stage set. Alexandre Blazys and Benoit Gérard approached the problem from a fresh, modern angle.

The bar sets the tone with a blackened steel arch, antique mirrors and deep blue barstools. By installing a constellation of smoked globe lights of varying sizes, the designers sought to echo the Mediterranean sky. Wood and leather banquettes structure the restaurant’s space and different zones. They help maximize the restaurant’s capacity while giving guests fine views of Old Montreal. The wood and seagrass chairs are accented with sheepskin, giving the space a playful feminine touch. Meanwhile, the designers approached the ceiling as an infinite pergola made of suspended wood planks. Spaced at regular intervals, the planks generate an interesting interplay of shadow and light on the brick and straw paper walls. Lights and service conduits are concealed above the planks, giving the space a warm, intimate character and a more human scale. Lighting at the base of the partitions is concealed inside steel

mouldings, creating a visual horizon for guests. The placement of the kitchen in the basement made it possible to consolidate all technical services on the left side of the building, which is as narrow as most others in the area. The kitchen is a major technical achievement in its own right. Faced with the need to run an enormous exhaust conduit across four levels, including a huge elbow behind the bar, the designers turned the constraint to their advantage by making the conduit the focal point and unifying element of the bar. Other elements expand on the Mediterranean theme, such as the use of stucco on certain walls and the inclusion of raw steel posts, or black and grey slate on steps and landings, giving the space an intentional patina. Also worth mentioning are the openwork partitions in thin, braided metal harking back to the triumphal aesthetic of a bygone Greece.

About blazysgérard Alexandre Blazys and Benoit Gérard combined their talent and expertise in 2003 to found blazysgérard, a Montreal design and architecture studio. the World Of Hospitality

Have we now found the ‘holy grail of lighting’? The prize has been in our grasp and eluded us in the past. The obstacle has been overcome. On this journey, we achieved energy efficiency never hoped for in the past; lamps that hardly need any maintenance. But did we lose something on the way? LED lost intimacy and that warm feeling of comfort. The first step in the right direction was for coves and shadow gaps that had 2 linear lines of LED; enabling us to dim both lines independently with two color temperatures of white. Colour 2700k was pretty much the equivalent of tungsten halogen when on full brightness, but when the good old light bulb or low voltage down-lighter dimmed, it had something else! It warmed as it dimmed to the color of a candle at its lowest. Oh, how we missed this! To quote Joni Mitchell; “You don’t know what you got ‘till it’s gone”. The feeling when you come in from the cold to your local bar or restaurant you seek refuge and comfort. This is because we are wired that way. The human condition expects the evening to have warmer tones. Sunlight does this, and the restaurant hospitality experience is nothing short of returning to our cave with a warm fire to greet you. Of course, the first step in getting hospitality lighting right is to hire a lighting designer such as Lighting Force, who specialise hospitality lighting design. They know where it should go and what it should be. They have all the latest toys at their disposal, like the Inox Dim2warm downlighter; ‘Mood’ that does all that I have described. Its only taken 2 decades to get this treasured feature back! Using latest LED technology at 100%; a mighty 1000 lumen output suitable for front of house circulation areas. But here is the clever bit. At 50% dimmed you are in the area of tungsten, and at 7580% dimmed you are at candle flame color tones. As I said; the ‘holy grail’. That in conjunction with similar effects from Inox cove lighting systems creates a complete hospitality package. Ian Howard - Hospitality Lighting Specialist

lighting force

Dim to Warm The past few years have seen great advances in lighting technology in the hospitality industry. New LED lightsources have largely supplanted the mix of incandescent and compact fluorescent lamps that became the norm over the past couple of decades. These have massively reduced energy and maintenance costs, whilst adding to the designer’s pallet of techniques to make a space stand out by use of tiny lightsources in inaccessible spaces and new ways to use coloured light. Few would miss the compact fluorescent lamps when they are gone, but incandescent lamps had desirable characteristics that we are missing already. This is why CFL lamps never took off in hotels the way they did in offices (or at least, not in classy hotels) - the poor light quality and lack of controllability largely consigned them to lobbies, corridors and back of house areas only. Upgrading to LED lightsources solves many of the problems with CFLs, but up until now they have had one glaring fault that has left them at a disadvantage to incandescent. Both consciously and subconsciously, humans associate colour temperature and intensity of light with the time of day - we associate cooler light with daytime and warmer light with evenings. Lighting designers have known this for many years and have come up with varying techniques to create light, business-like daytime scenes and warm, intimate evening scenes in the same space. In the age of incandescent and halogen lamps, this was easily achieved simply by dimming the lamps - anyone with lights at home on a dimmer switch will know that dimming them down in the evening doesn’t only reduce the light, but warms the colour as well. This is a natural characteristic of any filament lamp, but not of any gas discharge (fluorescent) or solid state (LED) lightsource. It also happily fits in with our subconscious desire for warmer evening light. LED lighting has provided some great tools for the designer to tone the light to suit the time of day, by mixing light from cool coloured and warm coloured lamps and using controls to vary the mix between the two. These are great solutions for open spaces and corridors as they tend to be from linear led lamps that can be concealed in coffers and shadow gaps. But concealed linear lighting doesn’t suit all spaces and, in itself, tends away from intimacy as it flattens light in a space. For a truly intimate space, directional light, such as produced by downlights and spotlights is best. And here’s the rub - until now, LED lamps in these types of light fitting have not had the ability to warm in colour as they dim. With the introduction of the ‘Mood’ range, Inox now offer the solution to this - a range of downlights with all of the conventional LED benefits, but also with the characteristic that as they are dimmed, the colour warms up, just like incandescent lamps. ‘Mood’ downlights were developed with the hospitality industry in mind, so at the cool end are a still warm 3000K, typical of an undimmed filament lamp and at the warm end are down at 2000K - the colour temperature of candle-light. At full output, they deliver up to a punchy 1000lm at only 14 watts of power. These benefits have led some to describe ‘Mood’ as the ‘holy grail’ of hospitality lighting.

Hospitality ambience is paramount and so it feels natural to us that light should grow warmer as it dims; a bright-white roaring fire settles down to an amber-red glow just as sunlight itself grows warmer as the sun sets. It’s what we subconsciously expect, and Inox LED downlights reintroduce this warming effect, giving the most natural possible feel for clients and guests as your lighting moves to dimmed, intimate, scenes.

Smartphone Charging Made Smarter

i

Qi Charge are leaders in smartphone charging technology. Our solutions are specifically tailored for the hospitality industry, empowering our restaurant and hotel partners to swiftly and professionally address customers’ smartphone charging needs.

GIZGO has been developed for the hospitality industry in that it cannot be recharged outside the restaurant or hotel premises. GIZGO cannot be recharged through the mains supply but only on its uniquely configured charging mat that the business retains.

As battery draining becomes a growing problem, businesses have to face up to this never ending challenge and find a new charging solution as customers regularly expect restaurants to charge their smartphones.

GIZGO is also configured with a patent pending thirty minute timer. After this time, the charger locks and cannot be used again until the timer is reset by placing GIZGO on its mat for a second. GIZGO is then available for the next customer again for thirty minutes. The timer function is key to allowing the business to distribute the charge fairly amongst customers and to prevent overuse. With GIZGO locked and without its mat, the customer cannot use it outside the premises and so discourages theft and misuse.

We offer two smartphone charging solutions to suit your business and customers’ smartphone charging needs GIZGO Charger The GIZGO portable charger allows customers to keep their smartphones with them and charge at the table. As well as optimising the customer’s dining experience, GIZGO eliminates any risk of loss or damage as a result of staff handling customers’ smartphones. GIZGO is handed to and operated by the customer.

GIZGO Tower Our second solution is the GIZGO Tower, a lockable state-of-the-art smartphone charging station that can charge up to eight smartphones from one power point. Ideally suited for coffee shops, concierge and the bar areas, the GIZGO Tower is operated by a member of staff. The token system gives both your business and the customer peace of mind that the smartphone is being charged safely and responsibly. Equipped with wireless technology as well as Apple licensed and Android cables, the GIZGO Tower is a futuristic one stop charging station for all major smartphones.

Gainsborough Bath Spa

The Gainsborough Bath Spa – A First In Hotel Spa Design Ancient tradition and contemporary luxury combine to create a unique hotel thermal spa experience From the original thermal baths of Roman times to Georgian society’s ‘taking the waters’, the city of Bath has long been associated with the restorative powers of its natural springs. Drawing on this rich heritage, the new Gainsborough Bath Spa, situated above the remains of ancient Roman Baths, is the first UK hotel to offer a natural thermal spa. In 2006 EPR was selected to convert a disused block in the heart of the historic city of Bath into a 99-bedroom five-star luxury spa hotel. As project architect, Claire Truman explains, “The listed nature of the building and its location in the world heritage site offered a distinctive starting point and inspiration for its re-use as a spa hotel – it was an opportunity to create something genuinely unique.”

Developing a site with such a rich history brought its own challenges to the project, not least the fact that excavation work was severely restricted by the remains of Roman Baths beneath. This demanded an innovative design solution for the sub-structure, particularly to the lifts and pool area, the latter of which stands directly above an original Roman mosaic. In homage to this, a replica mosaic was commissioned which now forms a stunning focal point in the hotel spa. Further inspired by the site’s Roman legacy, the spa is centred around a two-storey glass atrium which encloses the pool to create an internal courtyard filled with natural daylight. The spa facilities include eleven treatment rooms, saunas, a steam room, ice chamber, fitness centre, and – uniquely – a series of natural thermal water pools, each set at a slightly different temperature to enable a genuine Roman bathing experience.

The hotel itself is the product of a complex conversion from five Grade II listed buildings, including renowned nineteenth-century architect John Pinch’s United Hospital building, until recently the home of Bath’s Technical College. Unifying the different buildings, each with their own levels, and converting them within the planning height constraints demanded a creative solution in order to deliver the desired number of bedrooms and associated facilities. As well as the conversion, EPR also designed a portion of new build which served both to link the buildings together – including an underground link to the 14-bedroom hotel annexe – and to rejuvenate the perimeter. The external design was further enhanced through new stepped terraces to Bilbury Lane, publically accessible roofs and a sympathetic external lighting scheme whereby the feature lighting is limited to the hotel’s key architectural elements.

Gainsborough Bath Spa

the World Of Hospitality

Internally, and working in collaboration with New York interior designers Champalimaud Design, EPR conceived a series of varied and sophisticated spaces, both for the public areas and the bespoke guestrooms. Alongside the spa, the development comprises 99 custom-finished guestrooms and suites (three of which are the only guest rooms in the UK to offer guests in-bathroom access to the thermal waters), restaurant, private dining room, lounge and banqueting facilities. Open on 1 July 2015, this much awaited luxury hotel and spa is set to become a leisure destination of choice.

Casino of Montréal

Revival of the Casino of Montréal

E

xceptional fact, the Casino’s redesign will have led to the development of a real creative laboratory, with its own research and development budget. “The Casino was an unparalleled site of experimentation. With the help of local artisans, all the work on the space and material will have enabled us to assert the building’s unique and singular character even more,” confirms Jean-Pierre LeTourneux, Founding partner at Menkès Shooner Dagenais LeTourneux Architectes. Simplifying indoor circulations and spaces. The current project will complete the work that began in 1993, during the first stage of renovations that breathed new life in the former France pavilion of the 1967 World Exposition. The design and renovations were completed in a record time of 10 months. Following its immediate success, the following and limited enlargements were undertaken for the first time in 1994, and a second time in 1996, in the building that housed the former Quebec Pavilion.

The new phase of renovations enabled a comprehensive review of the circulations and resolved some functional problems at the same time. The architects simplified the space by focusing it around a circular hub across four levels, where the recreational areas come together (bars and lounges). The gambling areas are located around the vertical column lit by a big mesh of aluminium slats, with panoramic elevators on the south side and a staircase on the north side. The 5th floor encompasses the restaurant service, with two fast food counters (Asian and Western), a buffet and an à la carte restaurant. To preserve the unity of the gambling area, the former administrative offices have been relocated outside the building. The multiple previous accesses have given way to a single majestic entrance, covering the reception, cloakroom and security areas. Outside, the designers streamlined automobile and

pedestrian traffic that now converge to a single entry point. Setting up a strong identity was critical from the early stages of the project. For Yves Dagenais, Founding Partner of Menkès Shooner Dagenais LeTourneux Architectes, it was a question of finding, in collaboration with the marketing team, the Casino’s true strength of the tone, with regard not only to its position in the city but with its clientele as well. The current renovation project provides the interior space with its own personality, defined by a gaming, light and Montreal spirit theme. Each of the four gambling floors is identified by a playing card colour with the designs discreetly displayed in the perforated aluminium panels on the walls. By the same token, huge mannequins portray the effigy of a card figure (Queen of Hearts, the Joker...) that greets the visitors at the entrance of every recreational zone. Oversized tokens are hung or drawn on the ground to enhance the symbol of the game.

Casino of Montréal

the World Of Hospitality

71

Menkès Shooner Dagenais LeTourneux + Provencher Roy Architectes Light is omnipresent and is projected by the many lights as well as filtered through the backlit walls. It benefits from the permeability of the space, like the immense open palisade made of laser chiselled chrome pipes that separates the gambling areas from the recreational areas. In turn, Montreal’s spirit is conveyed on a monumental media screen, designed by the architects and programmed by the firm Moment Factory. It spans over five floors in the middle of the building and is transformed into a permanent multimedia presentation zone. The Casino thus becomes a space to share Montreal’s culture and creativity. A rare occurrence for this type of project,

the Casino’s redevelopment was transformed into a true experimental laboratory. A special research and development budget was planned to develop and test new materials, structures and lightings. This creativity was led to change the traditional perception of the space’s functionality. The walls became signs, ambient lighting and visual identity support. The interior design team at Moureaux Hauspy, part of Provencher Roy, collaborated on the interior redesign of the whole project, including the entrances, gambling areas, common areas and the VIP zone. It appointed the firm Blazysgerard to work on redesigning the restaurants on Level 5. Respect for visitors and the historic site. Despite the duration and the extent of the

works, the operational flexibility of the teams involved in this project will have allowed the Casino to continue its operations without causing major interruptions or inconveniences to the clientele. Moreover, the architects minimised the impact of their intervention on Expo 67’s historical site and respected the identity of the former French pavilion. For example, they used the same original architectural language to redesign the new main entrance. Plus, the new galleries housing the administrative offices were placed in a new landscaping that honours Expo 67’s former basins and watersheds. www.msdl.ca www.provencherroy.ca

With flourishing development being made in its growth strategy, Rotana will expand its portfolio across six different markets including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Africa, and entering Turkey for the first time. The 11 properties set to open under Rotana management in 2015 are as follows: • Burgu Arjaan by Rotana, Istanbul, Turkey • Tango Arjaan by Rotana, Istanbul, Turkey • Dalga Residences by Rotana, Istanbul, Turkey • City Centre Rotana, Doha, Qatar • Centro Doha, Doha, Qatar • Downtown Rotana, Manama, Bahrain • Capital Centre Arjaan by Rotana, Abu Dhabi

Rotana’s launch into Turkey – one of Europe’s fastest-growing hospitality markets – will see the group open two hotels in Istanbul in July 2015 with a total inventory of 319 rooms. Rotana is also set to strengthen its presence in Qatar where the brand will open its second five-star hotel and its first Centro branded hotel in Doha in August 2015. Featuring a combined inventory of 600 rooms, the two openings will make the group the largest hotel operator in this Arabian Gulf State with a portfolio of four hotels. Already the leading hotel operator in the UAE, Rotana’s number of properties in the capital will increase to 13 with the forthcoming opening of Capital Centre Arjaan by Rotana, Abu Dhabi. Rotana

is also poised to extend its footprint in Bahrain with the opening of Downtown Rotana, the group’s third property in the island nation. A further three properties are set to open in Saudi Arabia – including the first five star Rotana hotel in the capital of Riyadh and the country’s first Centro branded hotel, to be located in Jeddah and Riyadh – which are expected to add 772 rooms to the existing inventory. As part of its continued expansion in the African market, Rotana will open the 100-room Kinshasa Arjaan by Rotana in the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo this year. The new properties will create a substantial number of employment opportunities and Rotana plans to hire more than 10,000 employees across the next five years to operate the hotels. www.rotana.com

Red Dot Hotel

R

eddot Hotel is transformation of a thirty-five year old hotel formerly the Galaxy Hotel. The building was reconstructed and got rebirth. Therefore, the design team began by doing a thoughtful research of the district where the hotel is located. They discovered the old and aging district is packed with elegant buildings with fine materials. So, they decided the effort to bring new life to the hotel should be combined with a mission to give the building a significant role to tell the story of the district. The ordinary building materials for hotel design are abandoned. The nature of materials from tough times is rediscovered within the space-time memory. For example, the building adopted a very regional red brick and pebble surface as its only cladding materials so that the faced could have a consistent dialogue with the district’s context as well as bring back good old memories of the district’s glory days.

We did not copy old-fashioned decorations but apply the new design to reappear the vitality of old material. The design goes throughout the arrangement of exterior and interior space. Welcoming signs in LED revive a nostalgic melody as if the clock was set back 40 years. At first sign in lobby, Fireproof Brick were used to the wall, Reduction Firing Brick to the ground, and figured glasses on arched windows. We put various construction materials with people’s common memories together to reproduce those beautiful days in the past. As a hotel, Reddot Hotel wants to make each passenger feel pleasure and comfortable. Interesting elements include a stainless tube slide spiraling down from the second to the first floor that immediately catch one’s eye. The spiral slide is made by 102 stainless steel sheet, the metal slide is 27 meters in length. Each time passengers sit on the slide and go down, they laugh out loud and enjoy in it. We image that when stainless

steel sheets of slide reflect colorful neon light, it just becomes a time tunnel which brings our memories back. So, Steven Wu, the designer of slide, truly believes the slide is not simply for fun but rather it is a symbolic object reversing time and space. In guest room, we consider about that if it is comfortable and cozy as in home to every guest. Wooden floor, serpentine and Hakka fabric was generally applied in interior design. These ingredients makes the guestroom more peaceful and reliable just like home. Besides, the problem of a very low net floor to ceiling height from the second to eighth floor needed a proper solution. Using color and furnishing layouts was a useful way to levitate the pressure of tight space. Reddot Hotel was located in the central district, and old district in Taichung. We smartly combined different materials to connect time and space. This is the core of Reddot Hotel’s interior design idea. www.reddot-hotel.com

of-installation and durability. Every Kinedo cubicle provides a watertight space and this is achieved with no requirement for silicone or grout thanks to the clever design and intuitive assembly. The units stay looking good for longer thanks to Cristal Plus glass, which is standard on all glass areas. This permanent, anti-limescale coating minimises the build-up of calcium deposits and dirt on glass and is resistant to hot water and UV rays, encouraging water to run off the glass without leaving streaks or water marks. Further details can be found on the Kinedo website www.kinedo.co.uk along with installation instructions and videos.

Go.mir Guest House / Moon Hoon Gomir

The client

The design

Go happens to be the Sirname of the client... mir in Korean means a dragon...so Gomir means Go's dragon...

Go is a sir name that is very common among Jeju Islanders. The client is a Jeju born Islander who worked as an imported car dealer in Seoul.

The site

He decided to return to his island of birth to start his own business, a guesthouse, and a coffeeshop with a home for his family.

The program requested by the client and the budget sculpted a simple and dense block of function with a small atrium in the middle carrying on the porosity concept for ventilation and light purpose for guest house design. Looking from the road, left is the guest house and the right is the coffee shop and the house. The south east was given to the house for better everyday living conditions. The 1st floors are angled because even though the footprint is small the volumetric experience is of spatial expansion. It is built to the maximum, so the angle and the extra volume is a bonus. The entrance to the guest house is at the rear, providing a walking experience and buffering from the busy traffic. The small lobby is greeted by an atrium of 3 floor depth. It provides a calm well of light gives some space of breath in otherwise a tight space composition.

Jeju is an Island south of Korean peninsular, famous as a vacation spot. The landscape is dominated by halla mountain in the center and basalt rocks by the sea. The weather is more balmy than mainland which allows for more exotic vegetation growth. The site is located just five minute walk from a famous tourist site called Yongdoam(dragon's head), which is a basalt formation that looks like a dragon's head. The story and appearance generated by basalt Yongduam became a point of departure for the new design. The site itself has nothing spectacular, having a two way road in front, surrounded by common buildings. But, going up vertically meant that sights of the sea and Halla mountain could be secured.

Architects: Moon Hoon

Section The budget was very tight from the start, so many things were taken as given conditions. The three different functions merged to make one building, instead of two or three, even though site is large enough to accommodate at least two buildings with a decent courtyard in the middle. The exterior finish was decided early on, a eurofoam finish with paint reminiscent of basalt rocks.

Coffee Bar Revitalizes Area

ones | haydu has won a Merit Award for Interior Architecture from the American Institute of Architects San Francisco for their work on Coffee Bar Kearny. The primary objective for this tiny cafe in the heart of downtown San Francisco was to bring epicurean level coffee at a rate and speed to meet the Financial District’s demands while simultaneously revitalizing a stretch of sidewalk that has been fallow for over twenty years. Coffee Bar serves as a workshop to explore, experiment, and embrace the trends of the coffee industry. The cafe sits at the entrance to Saint Mary’s Garage, located centrally on the block of Kearny Street directly across from the Bank of America plaza. This stretch of sidewalk has been plagued by vacancy: adjacent lies a neglected lot, and the space itself has been empty for at least twenty years. After the Loma Prieta earthquake, the garage underwent seismic upgrades. This placed a large concrete shear wall between the space and the

sidewalk, effectively making it undesirable for retail. In an effort to bring life back to this crucial pedestrian zone, the concrete shear wall was opened, connecting the space to the sidewalk. In order to reduce waste, materials were used sparingly. Instead of covering up an othewise rough shell, existing concrete and piping were refreshed and left exposed, celebrating their industrial character.

About jones | haydu

Utilizing the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique, the exterior wood siding is scorched, a process which inherently prolongs the life of the wood. Above the opening, the scorching fades into the wood’s natural color. On the left, at pedestrian level, the scorched wood wraps to the interior, becoming the main intervention: a black frame surrounding the baristas. This black frame becomes a room within a room, emphasizing the artistry of the barista through a minimal use of materials and high efficiency lighting. The blackened steel counter provides a stark backdrop for the finished product, and will patina over time.

Their design approach centers on the search for ideas and concepts particular to each client, program, and site, and is informed by the unique nature of each project. At the core of this approach is the goal of having the architecture enrich the experience of the end users. They look to light, space, material, and form to create these experiences and deepen their connection to the building, site, and community. Ideally, the realized form will resonate and communicate with the senses in both measurable and immeasurable ways.

Raval Of the sea hotel

the World Of Hospitality

Raval of the Sea Hotel / VVArquitectura The Raval de la Mar Hotel is located in the historical center of Vila-Seca, where the urban lines are irregular and constructions are typically 3 stories high and narrow, limited by dividing walls. In this sort of urban layout, irregularities within alignments have ended up conforming the current existing grain. The lot has a privileged location since it is delimited by three streets. The plot is the union of three preexistent properties on two single-family-houses sit and an empty lot. From the addition of the three we obtain our construction site with its final irregular perimeter. Floor Plan Furthermore, the ‘Verge de la Pineda’ Street has a special role in Vila-Seca, it connects the Church’s square with the Mediterranean sea, passing through ‘Sant Antoni’s’ guarding tower. This street’s importance caused historic constructions to have a façade composition very different from their “back” façade, which were auxiliar constructions and closings.

The irregularity previously mentioned and the difference between the front-and-back façades becomes part of the project when designing the hotel’s exterior skin. This skin will break apart and differ where the past constructions met one another. The formalization of this concept are changes on the elevation, vertical incisions in the buildings, changes in the upper handrails or even just the addition of bricks where closing walls had been. It is through these changes that façades differ and evolve from the front regular façade that reminds of the historic examples (‘Verge de la Pineda’ St.), transitioning to a more arbitrary and flexible back façade. (‘St. Josep’ St.)
This concept creates an anonymous exterior that blends with its immediate context creating a radical contrast with the interior design. An opaque and rock-solid exterior that opposes the interior, where spaciousness and brightness are achieved through an interior light well.

Website: www.vvarquitectura.com

Floor Plan The hotel has 36 rooms distributed from the ground level all the way to the attic. They are organized on swastika layout that rotates around the central light well, which tiers to allow a better entrance of the south-west light beams. The upper level’s façade steps back to create exterior spaces both for public and private use. The project reaches its peak with the metallic skylight that connects the interior fortress with the exterior nature. The skylight’s structure follows the building’s swastika layout and filters the entering light beams, becoming one of the organizing elements of the project. Goldshield® Sporicidal High Level Disinfectant with New Residual Barrier

Goldshield®'s unique sporicidal disinfectant has been tested against Clostridium difficile spores and passed the EN13704 test with a log reduction of 106. Goldshield®’s unique technology differs to other similar technologies in that it not only kills microorganisms and is sporicidal but also leaves an invisible residual layer on any surface once dry. Most other formulations contain quaternary ammonium compounds only (QAC) as the main biocidal active, which is not capable of leaving an antimicrobial barrier once dry. Goldshield Sporicidal is therefore a dual function biocide not only broad spectrum against bacteria, fungi, viruses and bacterial spores but also leaves an invisible protective layer. This barrier provides incredible long-lasting defense against recontamination between cleaning activities.

I In ter ven tio nT ech no log y Technology

Goldshield®’s ability to create this protective layer after cleaning and disinfection, reduces the potential for crosscontamination/infection of potentially harmful pathogens in all areas of application. This will create a safer environment in a world where we are seeing more and more antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria and viral pandemics. Goldshield® Sporicidal technology with residual barrier provides a safer environment by providing a protective shield, wherever it is applied giving confidence that surfaces remain free from bacterial spores and leaving a "prophylactic" barrier for hours or even days after application, depending on the environment.

Don’t gamble with your fire risk assessment!

If you are responsible for a business premises, the law requires that you have a fire risk assessment. To find competent providers, you need BAFE. Under the provisions of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the Duty Holder or Responsible Person for a building is required to make a Fire Risk assessment to clarify the fire precautions necessary to ensure the safety of staff, customers and property.

At present there are no adequate means to ensure the competence and reliability of a company commissioned to carry this out. BAFE scheme SP205 has been developed specifically to address this situation, and will provide reassurance to the Responsible Person that they are doing everything possible to meet their obligations. So don’t leave everything to chance. Make sure that your suppliers are registered with BAFE.

Margherita

MARGHERITA BY LAURA GONZALEZ « In pizza we trust »... A mantra as a slogan, publicised on the façade of the former Pub St Germain, announces the cosmopolitan spirit of this contemporary brasserie signed Laura Gonzalez. The 900 square-metre space which covers three floors, solemnly renamed Margherita, has successfully been converted by the interior designer, hand-in-hand with Thierry Bourdoncle, the owner, into a cosy, multi-facetted and friendly restaurant. The renovation was considerable, fed by the international travel and culture of the pair. For this project, Laura Gonzalez took an interest in the smallest details, from the choice of menu, the tableware picked up at garage sales and on Ebay, and the name of the establishment, through to making antipasti jars and bespoke furniture. A modern-day trattoria consisting of a succession of spaces where everyone, regardless of the time, company or occasion, can come together to meet. The ground floor opens onto a large bar made of wood with dining tables and, on a lower level, a more casual dining hall flanked with a pizza bar with a view onto

the little terrace in the Cour du Commerce. On the first floor, where the cosier atmosphere features more wood, Laura has installed a second cocktail bar and a pizza counter. Another flight of steps and the signage, created in collaboration with The Office agency, displays: KIDS’ Kingdom. «I think this is my favourite space...» states the young mum. Designed as a living area with two lounges – industrial coffee table and club armchairs versus solid wood coffee table and velvet sofas –, one dining room for 8 people and a games area with blackboard, it gives young parents who enjoy brunches and dinners with their friends a real alternative. The warmth is emphasised by the choice of wall coverings – panelling, bricks and Ressource roman plaster –, which accentuate the room’s cosy atmosphere and the «home sweet home» decoration: children’s drawings framed on the walls, figurines of super heroes sensibly lined up, kilims on the floor, Caravane mirrors with multi-coloured braids and Scoubidou lamps picked up from Ventilo.

Location: 17 Rue De L’Ancienne Comedie 75006 Paris

Lastly, Laura Gonzalez has created two retreat areas on the ground floor and first floor: a wooden alcove with a large marble table and kilim benches, and a private dining room in Little Italy style with brick walls, a high table, leather stools and an olive oil library. At Margherita, warmth is expressed in the cuisine and the decoration. Removed of its artifices, the once intimidating area has been restored to its natural state. «We simply respected the identity of the place», explains the interior architect. Now, the wooden and rough concrete floors of this former stationery shop respond to walls covered in noble materials by exceptional craftsmen: 18th-century bricks, panelling, varnished wood cladding, old patinas, etc. The decoration features the recipe which has made Laura Gonzalez so successful: a mix & match of antique and bespoke furniture, enhanced by a few exceptional items, notably the Ochre and BTC lamps, not forgetting the essential touch of greenery designed by Arôm Paris.

at the order point having already patiently waited over an hour for a table. When we were considering our options for a digital solution to improve the customer experience, we decided we didn’t want the user restrictions of an app. Having Wi-Q enables every customer to browse the menu and complete their order at the touch of a button from any mobile device without having to leave their table. The customer can choose from the complete menu, including daily specials and sides, and include additional information such as allergies and food preferences. Queues at the ordering point have noticeably decreased and we are getting brilliant feedback from our staff and our clients, so we are delighted.”

hether it is a queue at the bar to order food and drinks or a queue at reception to check out of a hotel, lines of people waiting for service does not enhance the customer experience nor does it enable staff to go about their duties easily. If those customers could order and pay for their food and drinks from their table or check out from their room, queues would be a distant memory; customers would be happier and staff would be free to carry out other duties.

three years in research and development, Wi-Q is hailed as the future for easy, integrated ordering and payment. The launch took place at the latest venue to introduce Wi-Q, The Lion Inn Restaurant, Hotel & Bar in Boreham, Essex. As the south-East’s busiest restaurant, The Lion Inn caters for between 400-1000 covers every day and has joined major UK brands including Gordon’s Wine and PWC to introduce Wi-Q to the menu.

This isn’t a vision of the future; available now, Wi-Q is an innovative queue-busting solution set to change the hospitality and catering industries forever. Launched to media and trade representatives in July 2015 after

WEBSITE: www.wi-q.com

“Wi-Q is different because it is an end-to-end solution that is integrated with Wi-Fi, so, unlike an app, it can be used on a wide range of devices including laptops, tablets, e-readers and smartphones,” explains Wi-Q co-founder Graham Cornhill. “The customer can order their food and drinks, and pay for them without queuing, which obviously improves their customer experience. The benefits for the establishment include improved sales, quicker customer turnaround and greater staff efficiency. Controlled from a central portal that can either be integrated with the restaurant’s EPOS or offered as a standalone solution, Wi-Q can easily be tailored to the individual restaurateur’s needs, and has the scope to evolve alongside their business.” Wi-Q’s state-of-the-art system places the menu and ordering capability in a consumer’s hands with payment options that can be registered for multiple venues. Its features include network agnostic WiFi, app integration, multiple customer payment options, pre-load payment cards, EPOS integration or standalone ordering, pre-order, take-away and favourites. From healthy eating options, allergy information, gluten free diets, children’s menus to room service options, spa treatment bookings; there really is no limit to the capabilities of Wi-Q in the hospitality sector. safety at height

the World Of Hospitality

occasions there is no access provision and it is impractical to use a Mobile Elevated Work Platform. We recently came across the GlideLoc Fall Arrest Ladder System supplied by Safety At Height and have found it to be the ideal solution in providing safe and effective access. Our technicians feel confident as they are attached at all times at any working height. They also find the intermediate folding footrests ideal to stand on as they carry out their cleaning activities’. Height Safety Solution without Compromise The GlideLoc Fall Arrest System is a fixed ladder that can be anchored to the wall adjacent to the vertical duct riser. It offers building owners a discrete and safe means of access. The user is equipped with a Full Body Harness and a Shock Absorbing Traveller. The Traveller fits between his harness and the central fall arrest rail of the ladder. Should a slip occur, it locks in position and prevents a major fall and injury. The System can be fitted with folding footrests along its length. These are ideal to give the user a ‘firm footing’ whilst working off the ladder. These is particularly useful when cleaning is done through inspection hatches.

Height Safety for Personnel within the Hospitality Sector has never been more important. Working at height is so often an essential part of life for people employed in maintenance and cleaning activities. In 2013-14 the HSE reported that falls from height were still the most common cause of fatalities, accounting for nearly three in ten (29%) fatal injuries to workers. One key issue facing many organisation who produce food within the catering and hospitality sectors is the cleaning of cooking extraction ducts and risers. In new premises gaining access to do this is seldom a problem as the extraction system will be an integral part of the building design. This however is not the case for older buildings where the extraction duct system frequently runs vertically up the outside facade. Such ductwork presents one of the most serious and common fire hazards in a building. Of the 24000 accidental fires per year in commercial properties, around a quarter are attributed to cooking and extraction systems. Kitchen-extract systems build up grease, oil and other residues. If these deposits are left to build up within the extract duct and fans, they can ignite and cause fire to spread rapidly throughout the entire ducting system. As extraction ducts may often be routed through the outside it is possible the entire property is consumed by fire.

The key issue is removing the grease along the full length of the duct, thereby removing the fuel or ‘combustion load’ which reduces the potential of induct fires. If a system has only been partially cleaned there is still a potentially lethal fire hazard contained within the duct.

The central spine of the ladder can be used to ‘work position’ the user enabling two-hand working. The Fall Arrest Ladder comes in two main designs: The GlideLoc ‘Twin’ Ladder offers clients a fixed rigid access system.

The Fire Service offers the following recommendations: Why carry out cleaning and maintenance?  You will reduce the risk of fire. 

It prevents the build-up of grease deposits and bacteria within your kitchen extraction system.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 your extract systems need to be included in your fire risk assessment, with action taken to minimize any potential fire risk to buildings and occupants.

Failure to carry out proper cleaning and maintenance could lead to a reach of Environmental Health regulations and could invalidate your fire insurance policy.

How often should I clean ductwork? Ideally you should measure the rate of build-up of grease on the internal surfaces of the ductwork. If this is not possible your cleaning work should be planned around the level of use: 

Heavy use (12-16 hours per day) - Clean every 3 months

Moderate use (6-12 hours per day) – Clean Every 6 months

Light use (2-6 hours per day) - Clean every 12 months

The GlideLoc ‘PivotLoc’ is a unique folding fall arrest ladder which offers an astatically pleasing and secure means of access

London Fire Brigade is called to one fire every day which start in the kitchen extraction systems and ductwork of businesses like pubs, cafés, hotels and restaurants. Many of these are due to inadequate maintenance and cleaning. The Expert’s View

Build-up of grease in vertical duct

It is therefore of the upmost importance for those within the catering and hospitality industries to have kitchen extract ductwork cleaned and maintained on a regular basis.

We asked Kevin Moran, Managing Director of industry cleaning specialist Deep Clean Ltd. to offer a view on the current market and associated access problems. ‘Most companies in the hospitality and cratering industries are aware of the legal obligations to have a maintenance and cleaning programme for the extraction systems and ducting. One of our most common problems is how to gain access to external vertical risers on older buildings. On many

Height Safety for the Workplace

Creating safe access for maintenance work always creates its own problems for designers - how to provide a safe and secure ladder system which also looks good on the outside of the building? GlideLoc速 is a fall protection system, permanently installed on buildings or structures. It comprises a guided type fall arrester which glides up and down a notched GuideRail keeping the user connected at all times. PivotLoc速 The new innovative folding version of the GlideLoc System, offers architects and designers additional features and benefits. The side rungs of the PivotLoc Ladder close in together giving a discrete and almost unnoticeable look. When the PivotLoc is opened it offers a fully functioning permanent ladder with integrated fall protection. All our ladder systems can be powder coated in any colour to match the building or structure.

The Crawford Hotel – Denver Union Station Tryba Architects

T

he redevelopment of Denver’s historic Union Station was driven by the vision of bringing 24-hour vitality to this historic building and the surrounding LoDo neighbourhood. As the centerpiece of the region’s $480 million the Denver Regional Transit District’s FasTraks system, Denver Union Station’s Great Hall – which features soaring 65-foot ceilings – was reconceived to serve as the city’s living room. In addition to its role as a hub for transit users and travelers, the Beaux Arts Great Hall also serves as the lobby for the 112-room boutique Crawford Hotel, as well as a retail showcase focused on Colorado food, drink and entertainment. The building’s design plan included penthouse suites, numerous restaurants, and distinctive, destination retail. In addition to constructing a new hotel inside the existing historic structure, the Design Team rehabilitated, restored and revitalized the exterior

this iconic Denver Landmark with extreme care and sensitivity to the original materials and design. Completed in July 2014, the historic building is once again alive with visitors, merchants and an eclectic mix of 13 restaurants and unique shops.

Union Station Transit Center offers a new 22-gate underground bus concourse, light rail, Amtrak, Free MallRide and Free MetroRide all under one roof. In 2016, a commuter rail line will launch between Denver Union Station and Denver International Airport.

Named to the National Register of Historic Places, Denver Union Station expects to achieve LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Tryba Architects was the architect-of-record and the design architect and JG Johnson Architects the consulting architect for the project.

Historic Status:

Union Station is a renovated project in the heart of downtown Denver. What used to be an abandoned rail yard is now a bustling urban environment with new businesses, buildings and transportation options.

Before construction could begin the design team had to compile a lengthy submittal to both the National Parks Service and the local Landmarks Commission. The submittal described what the design intent was for every historic element throughout the building. The submittal went through numerous reviews from both parties before they approved the design. The two parties continued to review the project for compliance throughout the construction process.

Working with the large open space at Olympia London, Studio Design UK has again partnered with leading contemporary crystal manufacturer Lasvit (right, Crystal Rock by Arik Levy) and UK materials company Camira Fabrics to create a suspended entrance feature that is set to inspire show visitors. Also look out for the bespoke installation by Rug Designer when entering the hall and from the gallery level above.

Hilton London Bankside

Sauce To Handle The Communications For Oxbo Bankside And The Distillery At The New Hilton London Bankside London, 31st July 2015 - We are delighted to announce that we are working on the launch of OXBO Bankside and The Distillery – the restaurant and bar within the new Hilton London Bankside, the first Hilton hotel to open in the capital since 2006. Due to open in September in the centre of London’s vibrant Bankside, just minutes from the Tate Modern, this new launch marks an exciting new generation of Hilton hotels, featuring high-end, locally inspired food and drink offerings and contemporary interior design. Led by Executive Chef Paul Bates, formerly of The Beaumont and Intercontinental Park Lane, OXBO Bankside will be Bankside’s newest neighbourhood eatery, offering a delicious all-day dining menu, including breakfast. Located on the ground floor with 168 covers and direct access from Price’s street, OXBO Bankside is a relaxed space for guests and locals alike to meet in the heart of the Bankside area, any time of day. The open kitchen with chefs cooking in front of the guests will enhance the personalized guest experience and add to the theatre of the restaurant. The food itself will champion fresh British ingredients

sourced locally wherever possible, and draw on the abundance of produce available at Borough Market for inspiration. Bates’ menu will include Cox apple, cider marinated salmon, Cornish monkfish cheeks, pea shoots and English radish; Sirloin of Gloucestershire beef with sauce Bearnaise and New Haven Hake with squid, mussel and shrimp stew. The Distillery will become the place to be seen in Bankside and mirror the energy of the area. Designed as a buzzy meeting point for the local commercial area and residents of Bankside, The Distillery drinks offering will focus on artisan gins and locally crafted beers. Located on the site of Stevenson & Howell’s Standard Works, a renowned essence factory in 1800s, The Distillery pays homage to its heritage, serving a range of signature cocktails incorporating homemade aromatics, infusions and bitters. The bar will also serve a range of sharing platters and bar snacks, prepared by the restaurant kitchen and served until late, such as Chick pea and Tahini hummus with warm garlic Khobez bread and Five spice dusted crisp fried Pork belly with chilli, lime and soy dressing.

Paul Bates, Executive Chef commented “I am delighted to be part of such an exciting new addition to London’s luxury hotel and hospitality scene. Bankside has recently been through a tremendous commercial transformation and we have so many incredible institutions on our doorstep. I’ve always been inspired by British produce, and our local neighbours such as the Tate Modern and Borough Market so expect to see those influences in the menu at OXBO Bankside, as well as at The Distillery too. ” James Clarke, General Manager of the Hilton London Bankside Hotel added “I am thrilled to be playing a pivotal role in opening the Hilton London Bankside and I can’t wait to be checking in our first guests at the end of the summer. I will be working closely with Paul and my team to ensure the hotel, our restaurant and our bar become destinations for Bankside in their own right.”

Hilton London Bankside

The design of the restaurant and bar mirrors that of the wider hotel, reflecting the history and ambiance of the surrounding urban area. Exposed metal screens, bare brick work, reprocessed tube station tiles and bespoke joinery all feature, with furnishings of rich fabrics, inspired by William Morris, to create a style-led space for a relaxing yet stimulating dining experience. The colour scheme features greens, mustard yellows and browns which matches the seltzer bottles decorating the bar and the large, modern copper sheet sculpture located on the stairs to the Ballroom. Sculptures by British artist, David Farrer, accentuate the interior design while reclaimed ceilings and murals have been designed especially for the hotel’s public spaces. A spectacular Penny Wall will be installed in the entrance of The Distillery, featuring penny coins dating back to the 1860s. Spaces will be kept free for special guests and dignitaries to mark their visit to the hotel by placing their own pennies onto the structure. Hilton London Bankside offers the perfect base for exploring the city, just steps away from the Tate Modern and is the ideal destination for business and leisure travellers as well as London locals and Bankside residents seeking a new destination bar and restaurant, serving locally inspired cuisine. The bigger, the better.

At The London Tile and Mosaic Company, large format tiles have become the norm over the last decade. For all of us here, requests for a 90x90cm or 1mx1m size is nothing out of the ordinary. With the progression to 3mx1.5m sizes, what is out of the ordinary is the necessity to ascertain what a building's corridors are like, what width and height a stairwell or lift might be or whether there is a roof crane available before we can continue with a client's enquiry.

pictured: Folios Nero/Arazzo Nero

Once logistical hurdles are overcome, large surface areas are quickly covered by these marvellous feats of innovation, from our largest 3x1.5m size, to the more manageable 1.5x1.5m or 1.2x1.2m for those without a roof crane. With creativity utilising technological advancement in this way, we believe it is now safe to say that the best things do not necessarily come in small packages. londontileandmosaic.com Tel. 0207 403 3190
