I grow tomatoes - at least I try to grow tomatoes. I’ve come to the conclusion, after several years of fruitless effort, that this part of Florida isn’t tomato growing country. Growing up on the red clay of middle Georgia, I learned, almost as soon as I could walk, that gloriously red, mostly round, smooth skinned, slightly soft-to-the-touch, one-slicecovers-the-bread tomato was the King of the Vegetable Garden. My uncles, farmers all, discussed Georgia football, politics, and tomatoes, not necessarily in that order. They talked about the color, the redness, the sweetness and the acidity in reverent tones. Then they talked about the size of various varieties, Big Boys, Brandywines and beefsteaks, generally starting with “about the size of my fist” to “bigger than a softball” to “one slice is just hangin’ off’n the bread”. I think that frequent sips of Uncle Harold’s Muscadine wine also aided in defining the size of the tomatoes. Another thing that aides tomato production is bees. The experts say that tomato flowers can fertilize themselves. They also say that although tomatoes can self-pollinate, you can get a better crop of tomatoes if bees are doing the pollinating. I’m still waiting for that better crop. I think that part of the problem with growing tomatoes in Yulee is that bees are no longer commonplace. I’ve seen a few wasps and a few bumblebees; but no honeybees busily going about the business of pollinating tomatoes. My Grandson and I decided to visit the Blueberry Ranch located at 852042 US Highway 17, near I-95, to learn about bees, blueberries, and growing tomatoes. We turned off of the busy highway at a sign that proclaimed, “The Blueberry “The Heart of Nassau County”Vol. 1 - No. 10

Ranch” followed by “U Pick Seasonal Harvest”. The shaded lane guided us to the blueberry patch, where a couple of dozen people were busily picking that seasonal harvest of plump, ripe blueberries. We met Josh Bunk, owner and operator of the ranch. It’s called the Blueberry Ranch, but don’t be fooled by the name. It is a working, organic fruit and vegetable farm. You can pick your own or you can purchase blueberries and tomatoes that have already been picked for you. That’s not a bad thing on a hot, humid, afternoon. Eggs, fresh from the hens, tasty, golden, honey and vegetables are also available for purchase. There is a sign at the ranch that says “CAUTION! HONEY BEES AT WORK”. I noticed that there were bees buzzing about. Lots of bees! Josh has ensured that he has bees for pollination by locating beehives throughout the ranch, scattered among the rows of blueberry bushes. If you enjoy blueberries, peaches, apples, squash, beans, okra, eggplant, peppers and all sorts of other fruits and vegetables that are grown to feed us, then you should thank the bees. I told Josh about my concerns about the lack of bees in my garden. He explained that bees are threatened by habitat loss, insecticides and a tiny, little organism known as a bee mite. What’s a mite? Mites are arachnids related to spiders. Not only do they bite people, but they also attack and destroy entire colonies of bees.

Josh is happy to talk about the small farmer in today’s America. Inflation is wreaking havoc on the price of fertilizer with prices going north of $900 per ton. In an effort to reduce cost, the Blueberry Ranch is involved in composting food and yard waste to produce a healthy and chemical free fertilizer for your lawn and garden.Arecent addition to the crops grown at the ranch are the microgreens that Josh is growing in a small hothouse. Standing next to trays of tiny seedlings, he talked about the nutritional value of these organically grown plants. There are plans to expand the plantings if this pilot project is successful.Chickens wandered about, making themselves useful by plucking bugs from the grass and bushes. I soon learned that on this organic farm, the chickens were in charge of insect control. In addition to you and the kids picking your own blueberries, you can purchase honey, tomatoes, eggs, and other produce in season. The little guys will enjoy the chickens and biddies (baby chicks), turkeys and Bobwhite Quail. You’ll also get quite an education on organic farming, lots of sunshine, and tired kids, ready for an afternoon nap. Enjoy!

The Nassau County Board of Commissioners is set to make a tough decision on a proposed zoning change along the SR 200 corridor. This Monday, 7/25/22, at 6pm, the commissioners will decide on petition CPA22-003 & R21008, to commercialize 1.71 acres to build what is believed to be the 15th tire store within a 5-mile radius. The proposed site is located between Arrigo Blvd and Blackrock Rd. On June 21st,2022, with a full audience in attendance, the Nassau County Planning and Zoning Board listened to numerous comments from local residents regarding their concerns for a proposed zoning change. Concerns ranged from traffic safety issues to non-compliance with our county’s own development plan, however, the board voted 8 to 2 to recommend approving the zoning change. Yulee resident, Randy Levangie submitted the following comments to The Yulee News: The last Nassau County Evaluation and Appraisal Report (EAR) quotes, “The county is at a point where it must choose between allowing continued unbalanced commercial growth or guide development in a more balanced manner” This rezoning request is directly against everything Nassau County citizens have asked of their elected officials. It is against the current Future Land Use Map (FLUM), the 2030 Comprehensive Plan, the Vision 2032 plan, the SR200/A!A Corridor Master plan and any other plan you can name for Nassau County and yet it appears the BOCC will allow this to pass!?The citizens of Nassau County need

Here’s a recent picture of a fabulous, fun boating day for two local Yulee families that went scalloping this summer in Steinhatchee, Fl. This is an annual tradition for our families and the kids have really gotten into the hunt for them and even give us adults some competition out in the water. This was our last day on the water and without these kids help we wouldn’t have gotten our limit. They really love being able to snorkel around in clear, shallow water and diving down for the scallops. And the best part is sautéing them up for dinner!

Following the Chairman’s welcome message, Sheriff Leeper spoke. He stated, “This new gun range will allow Nassau County Sheriff’s Office Deputies to train better, train smarter and train more often. We will also be able to train with other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. This is a professional range, one that is compliant with the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission and one our deputies can be proud of”. Sheriff Leeper expressed his gratitude to Secretary of State (formerly State Representative) Cord Byrd and Senator Aaron Bean for their hard work in securing Legislative funding for Phase Two of the Facility which will include a training classroom building, storage building, and paved parking lot. “This building is pivotal for the development of training complex, which will eventually house our training unit. Board of County Commissioners Chairman Jeff Gray stated, “Taco is an excellent example of what a true public servant should be. He is devoted to the success of the County and the well-being of its residents. His long-term vision and strong work ethic provides the foundation needed to establish generational sustainability and a quality of life that our residents can enjoy for years to come. We are happy to have him on our team and are excited about the County’s future under his leadership.”

The Florida City-County Management Association (FCCMA) has recognized Nassau County Manager Taco Pope for his personal and professional excellence in local government administration. Last month, the FCCMA publicly celebrated achievements of its members and their significant contributions to the management of local government as part of the association’s annual State conference. County Manager Pope was one of only two City/County Managers selected statewide for the FCCMA’s 2022 Who’s Who Under 40 Award. The Who’s Who Under 40 Award was created by the FCCMA to acknowledge the industry’s top emerging talent who will serve as an integral part of local government for years to come. To be considered, the recipient must have a great aptitude for local government work and must exemplify the tenets of the code of ethics established by the International City/County Manager’s Association (ICMA).

On July 13th, 2022 the Board of County Commissioners and Nassau County Sheriff’s Office hosted a Ribbon Cutting and Firing of First Shot Ceremony for Phase One of the Public Safety Training Center which consists of two new gun ranges, restrooms and a temporary parking area. The event began with a welcome message by Board Chairman, Jeff Gray. He stated, “In 2016, Sheriff Leeper identified a need for a modern training facility for public safety personnel. However, not only did he identify a need, he came to us with a plan for funding utilizing monies earned from the U.S. Marshall Service for housing federal inmates at the Nassau County Detention Center. In January 2017, the Board dedicated 40 acres of County-owned property for the future facility. We broke ground on March 21, 2021 and progress has been steady. Our public safety personnel are dedicated to protecting the lives and property of Nassau County residents and they are deserving of a site where they can maximize their skills through training and participate in exercises consisting of realistic events to help them prepare for future incidents. This site provides those opportunities and will serve our public safety personnel for many years to come”.

In response to receiving the statewide recognition, County Manager Pope stated, “I am humbled to be recognized by my peers from across the State. I am extremely appreciative to receive validation from a respected independent third-party like the FCCMA. This recognition reaffirms that we, as a collective community, are making tremendous strides forward. Ultimately, this is our home and it is what we make it.”

FCCMA’s Association Services Coordinator, Nykierama Cooper, stated, “The Who’s Who Under 40 Award recognizes top local government leaders in Florida under the age of 40 for their personal and professional excellence. Those selected are among the industry’s top emerging talent and will be an integral part of the FCCMA and local government administration for years to come. Mr. Pope was selected for this award because of his contribution to the field of Public Administration and for his positive community impact.”

office space, a dispatch training room, several classrooms, a mat room, strength and conditioning room, as well as an airnasium for outdoor training”, stated SheriffTheLeeper.Facility will eventually have a less lethal and de-escalation training room, a shoot house, a jail training facility, a burn building, fire training tower, canine training and tracking area with kennels, special response team obstacle course, a pond for diving and boating rescue training and other endless possibilities. In his Leepercomments, closingSheriffstated,“As we conduct this ribbon cutting ceremony today, remember that this is just the beginning of the future of training public safety in Nassau County, which will ultimately provide better services to our residents. And who knows, if we dream big enough, we might just start our own Nassau County Law Enforcement Academy right here. Or what about a Nassau County Public Safety Police and Fire Training Academy? Wouldn’t that be something”. Following the presentation, Sheriff Leeper performed the ceremonial ribbon cutting with the five County Commissioners and County Manager by his side. Then, Sheriff Leeper fired the first shot at the gun range. We appreciate everyone who took time to celebrate this milestone with us yesterday. We look forward to celebrating with you again as future phases are completed.

Rollins is a Division 2 school for volleyball. Over 2 days the football players and staff laid 56 pallets of sod to create the practice field for years to come. Now that’s teamwork! to know what is happening in the BOCC chambers as the precious open/green space in Nassau county is being sold to the highest bidders and SR200 is getting commercialized from I-95 to the Shave bridge. This Monday nights meeting is expected to have a large turnout as members of the community put pressure on the County Commissioners to stop what they consider, uncontrolled growth.
