When you drive past the home of William C. Kinney, Bill to his friends, on Chester Road you can’t see the house for the trees; but you will see dozens of eyecatching sculptures hanging from trees, lining the driveway and hiding behind the bushes in the yard. They have strange shapes and poses, Aliens, multi-armed men, and Centaurs are everywhere, some are made of hundreds of small wooden parts, others are a simple combination of glue and aluminum foil, spread on a frame of wood or cardboard.

The real story here isn’t entirely about the art and sculptures, it’s also about Bill, his wife Molly, and a sailboat named ‘Sanctuary.’ I’m a little envious of Bill, he sold a company that he grew from scratch and then retired at the ripe young age of 40. The American dream: anybody can do anything. While Bill was building his X-Ray service business, he found a way to relax in his back yard. He relieved stress by building, assisted by his wife Molly, a 43foot sailboat. It only took them five years to build the boat. No reason to rush. The business was doing fine and making a nice profit. Then life made one of those unexpected turns that you hear about from time to time. He was finishing up his backyard project when he got an offer that he couldn’t refuse from a company interested in buying his business. The deal was done, and Bill and Molly found themselves unemployed. So, like not too many other people, he and his wife cast off from Thunderbolt Marina in Savannah in 1982 and spent the next eight years cruising to points unknown. They traveled halfway around the world and back in ‘Sanctuary.’ They visited islands in the Caribbean, the Bahamas, North and South America, Europe, North Africa, and too many other places to name. While cruising, they documented their travels with pictures. and he taught himself the art of painting and sculpting.

wife faced the wrath of Hurricane Hugo, a powerful Cape Verde, category five Atlantic Cyclone that inflicted widespread damage across the northeastern Caribbean and the southeastern United States. The hurricane killed 67 people, 24 of them in the Charleston, SC area, and directly affected around two million more. Bill and Molly rode it out on ‘Sanctuary’ in a protected anchorage in St. Croix, one of the U.S. Virgin Islands. St. Croix, the island was leveled and two people killed, was, in Bill’s words, “a very unpleasant place to live” after Hugo. He and Molly hoisted the anchor and set sail for the States. While stopping over in St. Augustine, a friend mentioned our little corner of paradise to them. They rented a car, drove to Fernandina Beach, and like the rest of us, fell in love with Amelia. The next day ‘Sanctuary’ was north bound on the ICW. Still adventurers and artists at heart, they created a gift shop on Centre Street called ‘The Unusual Shop.’ The shop won the award for best gift shop two years in a Today, row.Bill lives alone in a small house on Chester Road, no need for an address, you’ll recognize it when you see it. He closed ‘The Unusual Shop’ a few years ago. The ‘Sanctuary’ has long since been sold, Molly is no longer with him, he turns 80 in October and is a little deaf. The topic of money brings emotion cringe at the thought of a financial discussion at peace with where at financially? If knee deep then dread opening Fourteen years ago, I was in a boat load of debt, and I did not like to see mail carrier coming. I was “existing” financially, but barely. With debt comes an overwhelming sense of bondage. (Proverbs 22:7) I felt shackled to it! In 2008 life hit me hard and pulled the proverbial financial rug out from under me. I then realized that to get different financial results I had to begin doing something different. Sounds easy enough, right? Well, it is not easy, but it is worth it! Albert Einstein said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

in debt,

The key that would unlock my shackles of debt was the book, “Total Money Makeover” by Dave Ramsey. God used that book to help set a healing course of action in motion for me. I have walked his “Baby Steps” for the last 14 years and have found freedom and release from the chains of debt! Since I have experienced this freedom, I want to be “the key” to help others be set free too! Money is very important to God. There are more than two thousand verses in the Bible about money. As a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, I have adopted the mantra that 100% of what I own is His. I am just a steward of it. God never intended money to be a source of contention but a source of provision. Significant debt does not happen over-night, so an over-night remedy is an unrealistic expectation to have for yourself. Sometimes debt comes to you through no fault of your own, you may have lost your job, or gotten a serious illness and had a mountain of hospital bills. Whatever the case, I would like to encourage you with some intentional changes on your part you will be able to see the light of day again! My column will highlight money saving tips and ideas to assist you in your journey!

Bill Kinney, From page 2 The Sun. (Photo courtesy of Wil Nicolai.) A Broken Pane. (Photo courtesy of Wil Nicolai.) he is and what he does. He’ll show you around the garage, where he keeps all his tools and trinkets. He’ll tell you about his abstract art and paintings, show you his latest sculpture, and explain what he uses and how he makes them. He hasn’t sold any of his works of art, because more often than not, the sentimental value vastly outweighs what people might be willing to pay for it. If you, like my grandson and I, think he’s lived an interesting life, I recommend reading his book, ‘Sanctuary’ available on Amazon by William C. Kinney. Thanks for reading!

Below is a copy of the blog post by Extension Agent, Kelsey Irvine, explaining more about how Garrett was selected for this award. This year's winner has served as an inspiration for our community and is a glowing example of what 4-H can do for our youth. Garrett has only been a member of Nassau County 4-H since March 2020 but has already built a 4-H career with the equivalency of graduating seniors.Itall started with a dairy goat donation from Farm Bureau and a local family on a rainy day. That day we promised Garrett to help him feel like he belonged and that his tomorrow’s were better than his yesterdays. You have all likely heard already about Garrett. He has won many awards, been recognized by our Board of County Commissioners, stepped up to lead changes in our fair, led summer camps, and traveled the state winning awards and volunteering at fairs all over Florida. He has spoken at County and District Events, served as officers in his clubs, mentored youth, and has been honored with State level winning photography. He has completed high quality record books and built a business made possible by the community supporting him. He embraces all the joy and challenges with “learning by doing” and we truly cannot say enough about this specialThesemember.accomplishments are what is possible when a youth feels like they belong and that they have the support to work for their dreams. When asked about his 4-H involvement, Garrett had this to say: "Since joining 4-H I have really grown as an individual. I went from being shy and timid to a confident and forthright young man. 4-H has shown me that it is ok to open up and share your knowledge with others. But most of all I have new and lasting friendships. I really feel like I finally belong and that makes all the difference in the world to me. For the first time I fell like I am making an impact in other people’s lives and I want to continue doing so.”

Congratulations to Garrett Bennett on being named as the 4-H’er of the Year!

This past Friday, 8/19, Yulee played an away preseason game vs. First Coast: It was really good to see our guys get out and compete with someone else. Some of the emphasis we had during the first 3 weeks of practice showed up in a good way and it was nice to see us execute. We played really well defensively except for 2 snaps, and it was the difference in the score. I am happy with how we competed each play against First Coast. They are a talented football team, and they are big. They will give people issues this year for sure. This Friday, 8/26, Yulee has their first game of the season at home vs Charlton County. Upcoming game comments vs Charlton:They are a tough physical team that have been successful. They have a really talented running back, Jaylen Lilley. He is electric. If we let him pinball around and don't finish the tackle, we are going to have a long night. Their Quarterback is a dangerous athlete, 6'4” kid with a big arm. Runs really well, getting recruited by Florida State University. He is talented. Our defense is going to be tested real early and we are going to find out if we are ready to hang with a playoff caliber Georgia team. Defensively, I think their best player is #6., he's at LB. He is physical and loves contact. They also have a sophomore DE that has a Georgia offer. He is 6'7 and a great athlete. We have our hands full Friday night, but I think our boys are up to the task. We have had 2 good days of preparation so far.
