The USPS has assigned us to the 32097 zip code? When we make those morning and evening commutes to and from our jobs, we will leave zip code 32097 and drive to one of our neighboring zip codes. On your next trip to Lowes, you’ll enter zip 32034 for Fernandina Beach; but anyone that you ask will tell you that Lowes is in Yulee. Callahan is zip code 32011. It would be interesting to and approved by Albert Wagner, District

I often tell people that I’m from Yulee, the town that doesn’t exist. We don’t have a Mayor, City Council, Yulee Fire Department, Police Department, Planning & Zoning Board, or a sign proclaiming the city limits of Yulee. But what and where is Yulee? Yulee is a former whistle stop on Florida’s first ever coast to coast railroad. In one sense of the word, that railroad was the Nation’s first coast to coast railroad. Senator David Yulee, the first Jewish Senator in the U.S. Senate, was the driving force behind the construction of that railroad. He is our namesake. We’re not a whistle stop anymore. We’re home to Rayonier,Inc., one of the world’s largest forest products companies. White Oak Conservation Center is recognized as one of the world’s premiere wildlife breeding, research and training facilities. Our school system is rated second best of sixty-seven systems in Florida. One of the NFL’s top running backs calls Yulee home. We have planned communities, made up of thousands of houses, shopping centers and recreational areas, popping up like the wildflowers along our roads.

know where the people living alongside Hwy. 200 mentally divide Callahan from Yulee. If you’re commuting to the Regional Air Traffic Control center in Hilliard, you’ll drive past a million pines while entering zip code 32046 somewhere near Middle Road. Are Italia, Hero, Gross, Kings Ferry and Wildlight parts of Yulee? We all share the 32097 area code. Sooo? Are we a zip code on a postal map? We’re not a ghost town by any stretch of the imagination. We are home to thousands of unique individuals who are, by and large, small business owners, entrepreneurs and other working folks that commute to jobs in nearby Jacksonville, or one of our three area Navy bases, or they drive to “the island” to work in the tourist and hospitality industry, or one of “the mills”. While driving to the island they drive through an ever-growing retail corridor known (politely) as, take your pick, State Road 200, A1A (my favorite) or The Buccaneer Trail. You can find anything you need and a lot of things you don’t need on that stretch of highway. Although a good steakhouse would be a nice addition to the growing number of eateries. The questions remain. Who are we? What are we? Where are we? Our area high school is represented by the Hornets. Hornets are basically a vicious stinger madePharmacysimple.

Instead of harvesting the resin via the grueling cup-collection system, emphasis was now placed on cutting down the trees and transporting them to the pulp mills via semi-truck. Yielding to this new method, the turpentine stills slowly closed one by one. Within twenty years there were only about two working camps operating in the county. The average turpentine camp consisted of the main two-story building that housed the still, fire pit, rosin collector and cold-water condenser that turned the turpentine from a gas into a flammable liquid. Smaller outer buildings included storage sheds for the resin barrels and workshops for the coopers, blacksmiths and wheelwrights. The proprietor, if they did not reside at the camp, would have an overseer living on site, plus a manager and woods rider. The labor-intensive jobs of collecting transported by wings. As you live and grow, you’ll experience certain events that you’ll never forget, being stung by a hornet is one such event. But we’re more than a high school. We’re Americans, Floridians, Nassau countians, and . . . Yuleeians? Yuleeites? Being a part of Florida’s explosive growth doesn’t bestow upon us a moniker of any sort. Explosive growth doesn’t necessarily change our zip code. Where we live doesn’t change what we do to earn an income. We’re a community of people somewhere between the ICW, the Nassau River, the St. Marys River and Boggy Creek. After my travels around the Yulee area, I’d have to say that we are a community of people who enjoy backyard cookouts with family and friends. We’re families that support little league baseball and softball, kids playing soccer and Pee Wee football. We’re a place that makes families feel comfortable kayaking, fishing and shopping. A community of people that get up in the mornings, go to work, school and church. People that will still give you a break in rush hour traffic and motion you to pull out onto our busy streets with a friendly wave of the hand. People that will actually stop and ask if you’re okay or need help when you’re stopped on the side of the road. A community of peaceful neighborhoods where your child can swing in the shade of a tree and dream about the future.

Nassau County’s first turpentine still was opened by North Carolinians Thomas Branch and Bryan Gardner in the late 1850s near today’s Boulougne. Others soon followed, and the growing turpentine industry, also known as naval stores*, peaked from the late-1890s to the late-1930s. In 1920, there were at least a dozen stills operating within the thick pines of mainland Nassau County. Even the average citizen who owned forest acreage and needed extra income could lease their land to a turpentine operator desperate for pines to tap. However, by 1940, the two Fernandina mills were in full operation, heralding the age of the pulpwood industry in Nassau County.

The seemingly endless stands of pine trees growing in Nassau County have attracted countless entrepreneurs wanting to harvest them for their wood and ship them around the world. Although most of the early settlers in Nassau County were farmers and planters, there were a few that settled Nassau County just for the timber. They built riverfront sawmills and were granted thousands of acres of virgin forests to cut down and process into lumber. The timber industry was king here for decades until the late nineteenth century when turpentine operators from North Carolina began to migrate south to Florida. They sought the area’s thick pine forests not for the wood but for the resin.

2½ pounds fresh or frozen pitted Montmorency cherries

6. Let cool on a rack completely before cutting and serving.

1 tablespoon vanilla sugar or coarse raw sugar

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 375° with rack on the bottom third, and a sheet pan preheating with the oven. Line a 9-inch wide, 2-inchdeep tart shell or pie shell with one crust, then put in the fridge to chill at least 30 2.minutes.Ifyou are using fresh cherries, pit carefully and set aside. If using frozen, defrost cherries overnight in a colander to remove excess liquid (you can use it to 3.drink!).Whisk dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Add the fresh or defrosted cherries, the dried cherries, and the pear brandy. Stir to combine: You will get a thick goo around the cherries.

4. Fill your chilled pie shell with the cherry mixture. Top with the second crust, latticed or with steam vents cut in, and pinch the rim tightly to seal. Brush the top crust with cream and sprinkle with vanilla sugar or coarse raw sugar.

5. Bake at 375° for about 1 hour 15 minutes, rotating as needed for even browning. (Start checking internal temperature at around the 1-hour mark; you should see bubbling and internal temp of 175° when the pie is finished.) If your top crust begins to brown before the pie is done, tent with foil and keep baking.

and processing the pine resin - chipping, boxing, dipping, collecting, transporting, and distilling - were primarily done by African Americans. They and their families lived in small shanties grouped into “quarters” and the children attended segregated one-room schoolhouses. The typical turpentine worker was paid in scripts that could only be spent in the company-owned commissary store. Stills located close to the river transported the finished products with relative ease to river towns like Kings Ferry and Crandall for loading onto ships. However, the inland camps had to load the heavy barrels onto wagons and haul them on rough roads to the closest railroad platform for transport. The port in Fernandina received so much turpentine and resin from river and rail that they built a large dock dedicated just for handling all of the naval store products.

Wilson’s 1905 bill-of-sale to James Gross, showing the inventory of the Lessie turpentine still. The bill of sale covered not only the needs of operating the still but the needs of the workers who lived there as well.

James H. Gross (Gross and Wilson). Gross moved to Florida in his mid-20s and in 1905 he partnered with Callahan resident John R. Wilson in running large turpentine operations in Lessie and Evergreen. The pair bought many leases, and their operation shipped so many barrels of finished products, they persuaded Seaboard Air Line Railroad build a special spur from the main tracks to their Evergreen camp. Several miles north of this junction on the SAL main line, a small village sprung up around a whistle stop that was named after Gross. The turpentine industry has long since faded into memory but if one is lucky, they might find a collection cup attached to an ancient pine tree, a longlost rusty chipping tool or a metal script buried where a camp once stood. Not seeing much evidence remaining of the naval store business does not diminish Resin, See page 9

Some major names of Turpentine proprietors in the heart of Nassau County during the industry’s heyday were L. A. Davis and the Davis Turpentine Company (Crandall); Gross and Wilson (Lessie and Evergreen); L. L. Owens and Company , McKeithan and Company, Yulee Turpentine Company, Shave and Powell (Yulee). They were numbered among the 1458 naval store companies operating in the US in 1926 with over 99% of the distilleries making an annual revenue of over $5,000. Some notable area names were:Thomas Shave (T. J. Shave and Company). Thomas J. Shave, along with W. R. Shave and P. F. Martin, signed their first turpentine leases in June of 1904. Over the next several decades they expanded their leases and stills, plus opened an office on Centre Street in Fernandina so they could be closer to the busy Naval Store docks. The Davis Brothers (Charles, William, and Lewis). The Davis brothers moved their lumber operations from Orange Bluff to Crandall around 1895. Doing business as L. A. Davis and Brothers Lumber, they purchased huge swathes of forest land between Crandall and Yulee. Crandall became a bustling river port due in part to their shipping of vast amounts of lumber to other ports. W. C. and E. P. Davis also did business as Davis Turpentine Company that shipped their naval store products from the port at Crandall as well.

There were numerous comments suggesting to the Commissioners that they should disapprove the application. Speakers pointed to the abundance of businesses that sell tires in the immediate vicinity. A local businessman who owns a tire business in the community stated that his business was down 30% due to the proliferation of corporate tire businesses. Residents who live on Cessna Road spoke to the difficulties crossing 4 lanes of traffic on SR 200. Residents spoke about giving up green space which is diminishing in Nassau County. One resident spoke about flooding difficulties caused by retention ponds in the area. After everyone finished speaking Commissioner Aaron Bell made a motion to reject the application. There were no seconds to his motion and the motion was withdrawn. Subsequently a second motion was introduced by Commissioner Ford and seconded by Commissioner Farmer to approve the application. The final vote was 4 votes for approval and 1 with Commissioner Bell being the lone dissenter. On the second agenda item on this topic which read, “A proposed land use amendment for this site from Industrial (IND) to Commercial

County Commissioners Vote

Numerous parishioners of the Church appealed to the Commissioners to approve the application. One speaker stated that it would help to sustain the future of the Church. Further testimony underlined the fact that the application was fully approved by the Planning Department of Nassau County based on several criteria.

your

The Nassau County Board of County Commissioners on Monday evening July 25th reviewed and acted upon the application submitted by the Nassau Baptist Temple to amend the Future Land Use Map (FLUM) from Industrial (IND) to Commercial (COM) and to rezone the 1.71 acre parcel owned by the Nassau Baptist Temple that had been previously been separated from the remaining 11 acre parcel. The 1.7 acre parcel is located on the northeast corner of SR 200 and Cessna Drive between Blackrock Road and Cessna Drive. The change in zoning would allow the Church to sell the property to Discount Tire which currently claims to be "the largest independent tire and wheel retailer in the world". The meeting room was full with many local residents in attendance who presented diverse opinions. The speakers requested both approval and disapproval of the application. The Commissioners heard from the Pastor of the Nassau Baptist Temple, Truman Blankenship who explained that the Church had been approached by Discount Tire. After that the Church and its administrators and members proceeded to vote unanimously for the sale of the parcel. Pastor Blankenship appealed to the Commissioners to respect the "rights of the Church as property owners."

When asked what he would have preferred Levangie stated, "I would have preferred leaving it like it is, which gave it an industrial land use which the County talked about. Well that's also where you get a business park from. That property was in the perfect position to put in a business park with some kind of high payingNowjobs.you're talking about putting in more low wage jobs which means more affordable housing has to be found somewhere, which we already have a problem with. So you just exacerbate this problem. Didn't these guys know that? So I am fairly disappointed with the decision."

(COM) has been filed as a companion amendment to this application”, there was a unanimous vote. After the meeting

The Yulee News then spoke to Randy Levangie of Cessna Drive who voiced his disapproval of the outcome of the vote. He stated, "So, the Planning and Zoning Board voted against this back in March, but they did not follow through and therefore they were able to bring the petition back in June and obviously it prevailed there. But I don't understand why the Planning and Zoning Board failed to follow through properly. The issue is uncontrolled growth and that's what all the documents of the County talk about, that we are having uncontrolled commercial growth.Ifyou look at the documents they are all trying to address that. I was really disappointed that The Board of County Commissioners did not address that. The plan as it was presented was a failure and I gave the criteria, I pointed it out twice (during the discussion). If there is money involved, and anytime there is money involved people tend to vote inappropriately, let us say. I am just really disappointed in the County Commissioners in their continuing to allow State Road 200 to become nothing but a concrete jungle".

The Yulee News attempted to get comments from the lawyer representing the Church, Emily Pierce. Attorney Pierce referred us to Pastor Blankenship for comments. He chose not to give any comments responding that, "he was okay."

Submitted by: Russell Lowry Just read your piece on this. I liked it. I was at the last Nassau county meeting on this subject. However, I was surprised at how little the panelists seem to care about what was being said. It seemed a little too convenient that the partitioner couldn’t make the first meeting and neither did the property seller, so the community made their case alone. But then a second meeting was called to accommodate the partitioners. This time they showed up with their attorney and clearly were well prepared to refute anything that might be said since they already knew it from what was previously presented.Thelocal residents were clearly outgunned while the partitioner’s lawyer introduced various technicalities and even a veiled threat about what even less desirable outcome could result of leaving the zoning as it is, suggesting one of the neighbors might decide to refine petroleum in their garage under the current zoning. Really…. In the end what’s the purpose of the thousands of hours spent on planning if the powers that be are going to ignore the approved plans. By the way, the partitioner has been allowed to keep kicking the can down the road on the subject of their “ Traffic study” that shows TWO ACCESS ROADS”. This is factually wrong. There is only one access point because the second one they have in mind is Cessna Drive which is a private road and not available to the partitioner, period. Thanks for your attention to this matter.

I hope and pray that the Nassau County Board of Commissioners listen to their constituents and do the right thing by voting a resounding NO to allowing yet another tire store to open on SR 200 near New Life Baptist Church. I understand that they (the church)own the property and can sell it to whomever they wish... however, it just doesn’t make sense to add yet another tire store when this area is saturated with them! There are many other concerns such as environmental impact, safety, security, the list goes on. Do we really want SR 200 to end up being another Blanding or Beach Blvd? There are many other options for this site such as a dog park, amphitheater (similar to the one in St Mary’s), a green area with benches & picnic tables... just to name a few. Nassau County is a beautiful place to live. Can’t we keep some of it green and avoid the temptation of the almighty dollar to ruin our beautiful homes and lifestyle?

We've lived in Yulee off of Chester Rd. for almost 7 years. In that time we've seen Yulee grow. We strongly oppose a 5th tire store being built near Blackrock Rd. as this is not what Yulee needs. It would be great if Nassau County had a Sam's, Costco or even BJ's come in. And more grocery store options, i.e. Fresh Foods, Trader Joes, more restaurants and shopping, but not more tire stores, car washes and oil change places --- we have TOO MANY of those ! The County Commissioners need to not allow another tire store to be built and turn Hwy 200 into another Blanding Blvd. which would be bad. They should hold out for something that Yulee doesn't already have too many of. And there will be other takers with different options coming in since Yulee is definitely growing, especially since the expansion of Hwy. 200. Yulee is a great place to live but has few restaurant and shopping options and does not need another tire store, dentist office, oil change place or car wash!

The Florida Department of Health in Nassau County is Monitoring the Nationwide Monkeypox Outbreak Nassau County, Fla – The Florida Department of Health in Nassau County (DOH-Nassau) is monitoring the monkeypox outbreak. There are cases of monkeypox in at least 43 states and Washington DC. To date, there have been no monkeypox-related deaths outside of endemic countries. The risk of monkeypox to the general population remains low. In the event of a monkeypox case, DOHNassau will conduct epidemiological investigations to notify possible exposures and offer potential post-exposure prophylaxis. DOH-Nassau will offer the monkeypox vaccine to high-risk groups as doses become available from the federal government. Up to date information on monkeypox is available at FloridaHealth. gov. Case data for monkeypox, as well as other reportable diseases, can be found on FLHealthCharts.gov. Prevention and Treatment If health care providers suspect a possible case of monkeypox, immediately contact your local health department or the 24/7 disease reporting hotline at 850-245-4401. Local county health departments can help providers obtain monkeypox virus-specific realtime polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing. Human-to-human transmission generally requires prolonged, face-toface contact, direct contact with lesion materials, or indirect contact with lesion materials through contaminated items, such as contaminated clothing. Therefore, the risk of exposure remains low. Health care providers should remain vigilant of information related to monkeypox: monkeypox symptoms, especially among individuals with relevant travel history, transmission and incubation periods, Specimen collection, infection control procedures in the home and hospital settings, clinical recognition, and the characteristic rash associated with monkeypox, prophylaxis and possible treatments for monkeypox and monitoring of those exposed to monkeypox. The public should also remain vigilant of the current meningococcal outbreak. Demographic impacts are similar among meningococcal and monkeypox cases. The meningococcal vaccines are available to high-risk populations at every county health department, free of charge.

Now that their kids are grown, Curtis and Su zanne look forward to giving back to the community through additional community service organizations.

Horace Mann said, “Education is the Great Equalizer.” Education is the key to stop generational poverty, and it is the duty of Americans to ensure that we provide the best education possible for our children. When students graduate from high school, they should be equipped with the ability and knowledge to decide what path they want to take to continue their learning. Whether they choose a four-year university, a community college, techni cal school, apprenticeship program, or the military, the students should be equipped with options that are right for their per sonal career goals.
