If you’re reading this, you are one day away from the start of the Traditional End of Summer - - - also known as Labor Day Weekend. Labor Day is the last three-day, family-get-together weekend of what to us folks in northeast Florida has been a long, hot summer. So, what are you doing with your family this weekend? It just so happens that I’ve got a suggestion.

How many of us have actually been “ON” Lofton Creek? Thousands of us drive across Lofton Creek every day of the week. Some of us sneak a quick glance at the black water, overhung by moss draped trees, sometimes spying an occasional boater, and say to ourselves, “Gosh! I’d like to get out on that creek one day and see what’s out there.” WELL GEE WHIZ! What are you waiting for?

Lofton Creek is a tidewater creek that’s stained like the color of tea. We’re in the South so it has to be Sweet Tea. It is home to bass, bluegills, catfish, moccasins, a variety of turtles, and of course - - - alligators. A few years ago, there was a 12-to-13-foot gator that sunned itself in the grass about 100 yards downstream from the landing, don’t worry, the gators won’t bother you unless they’reThehungry.treesshading its banks are home to dozens of species of both migratory and

large-mouth bass and redfish taken by anglers fishing the creeks and mudflats in our area.AsALWAYS when enjoying wild, wet and wooded Florida, wear appropriate clothing cause you’re going to get your feet wet, bring copious amounts of bug spray, suntan lotion with an SPF of 30 or better, and plenty of water. I usually carry my water bottles in an insulated pack along with my Snicker bars. Remember, “Man cannot live by bread alone.” My wife and I can’t do it either. We’ve found that chocolate makes any bad day a good day. I also recommend a hat, not a cap, when you’re going to be on the water. I’ve never had the tops of my ears sunburned when wearing my hat.

P.S. I bag my phone, along with a fishing bobber, in a Ziplock bag - - - just because I’m me and my phone can’t swim.

Again - - - Google is a great tool for finding local fishing guides, kayak tours and even pontoon boat rentals. Riptide Watersports Rentals and Tours along with several other outfitters, are available for kayaking and fishing trips on Lofton Creek and other tidewater creeks in the Yulee area. We Googled “Kayak rentals in Yulee” and were soon talking with Amber at family owned and operated Amelia Island Kayak, about the wide range of tours they offer including paddling over to Cumberland Island, enjoying the white sandbars on the St. Marys River, counting alligators in the Okefenokee Swamp, or a quiet morning on Egan’s Creek. We met her brother Aaron, our guide for the afternoon, along with four other kayakers, at the Melton Nelson Boat Ramp off Hwy. 200. Aaron was happy to talk to us about what to expect on our two-hour tour on Lofton Creek. After instructions on our safety equipment and paddling lessons, we were ready for launching. The creek has a fair amount of shade over it that makes it a reasonably comfortable outing for beginners and experienced kayakers alike. This could be your happy place if you want pictures of trees bearded with Spanish moss and creekbanks that look as though they were lifted from the Amazon and sat down in Yulee. You may or may not see any of the gators that sunbath along the creek.

Youth Football Update: All of the YAA teams traveled to in county rival Hilliard to take on the Flashes on what ended up to be a great day of football in the North Florida swamp. Overall, Yulee teams dominated the day by showing out on defense winning 3 of 4 games anchored by shut out wins at 6U & 12U along with only giving up a late touchdown in the 10U game.

12U: After suffering a heart breaking overtime loss to the #3 seed Callahan Warriors in week 1, the oldest of the Hornets at the park pitched a shut out against the Flashes with an easy 10 point victory. The Hornets defense anchored by Captains Alex Maloy & Landon Lyle only allowed 1 first down, scored a touchdown & forced a safety all while playing against a running clock in the rain. Carson Miller had the play of the game when he stripped the ball from the Flashes running back & then turned on the jets with a 20 yard fumble return touchdown. Up this

David was born on August 8, 1934 in his family’s home on Page’s Dairy Road and lived on the same road most of his life. His parents were John and Clara Belle Higginbotham Page. David grew up working on his family’s dairy and enjoyed riding his horse to Yulee School when he “accidentally” missed the bus. He wasn’t a scholarly student. He remembered that one of his favorite teachers would let him sleep in class, saying “He was up working during the night.” That was true because he had been milking cows at 2 AM. David excelled in 4-H activities, particularly in cattle judging. He won many awards including several state awards that gave him the opportunity to travel to other states as a Florida cattle judging team member. David was a proud Yulee Hornet, graduating in 1952. He said it was his class that chose green for the school color, adding that it was chosen because green was his favorite color.

Fernandina, David accepted the pastorate of Silk Hope Baptist Church in Savannah, GA. In 1974, the family moved back to Page’s Dairy Road to stay. David continued to preach at churches in the area (Ruhamah Baptist in Kingsland, GA, Pleasant Park Baptist in north Jacksonville, North 14th Street Baptist in Fernandina, and Harriett’s Bluff Baptist in Camden County, GA). He especially loved the children in his churches. Many of their earliest words was “preacher” because they loved him, too. He also loved to sing and often added beautiful harmony. He was on the Nassau County School Board for 12 years and owned and operated Page’s Nursery for 40 years. Many Nassau residents fondly remember their visits to the nursery and their golf cart rides and talks with Mr. Page. David was an active member of Yulee Baptist Church until February 2021 when he moved into the Jane Adams House for memory

10U: The 2nd oldest group at the park proved that their week 1 victory vs. Callahan was no fluke with a week 2 victory against Hilliard. Led by a stingy defense with the exceptional open field tackling of #9 Alex (AJ) Jones the Hornets showed big play capability all day with multiple interceptions, a physical power run game & a pass game worthy of their #2 seed. This week brings in the Villages Toros, a team the Hornets are currently tied with for the #2 seed in their division. Show up to watch a great game on Saturday, September 3rd at 1:30 pm at the Yulee Sports Complex.

TD. Six (6) different offensive players had multiple touches. We just struggled putting complete drives together that resulted in points. I’m proud of the way our team battled. After we made the score 147, our defense immediately answered with a 3 and out to give the offense the ball back. That’s a moment we can build on for the future. If we play defense more often like we did that possession, we will be a tough team to beat. Notable defensive tackle numbers: Amauri Goff had 14, Rylan Hale had 11, Gavin Blackwell had 10 and a forced fumble.

8U: The 8U Hornets knew this week would be a challenge as they faced the #2 seeded Flashes, and they played inspired football. The much improved Hornets showed improved defense from week 1 holding a tougher opponent to less points than the previous week. Come support

Charlton is a really talented team that was in the playoffs last year, so it was good to see a playoff caliber talent early in the year. They were physical up front and did a great job eliminating mistakes. Their running back was incredibly tough to tackle. He is a great football player.
