Once a year book lovers of all ages are treated to the Amelia Island Book Festival (AIBF). The Festival has had a 21 year run to date. The Festival includes numerous programs and events for children, teenagers, and adults. The Yulee News met with the President of the Festival, Paige Foery to learn about the many components of the Festival. The designated events include the: Authors in Schools Program; Celebrity Author Gala; Authors' Expo & Readers Extravaganza; AIBF Scholarship Program; Celebrity Author Luncheon; Short Story Writing Contest and the Doggone Good Readers Program. President Foery expressed her enthusiasm about the upcoming event. She stated,"The most important thing for us to do this year is to bring it back and focus on having it because we haven't had it in the last two years, 2021 and 2022" (due to the Covid-19 epidemic). "We did however distribute over 10,000 books to Nassau County students in 2021. This year we are full steam ahead on all of our events.”The importance of the Festival lies in its mission statement which reads, "The mission of the AIBF is to enhance the overall life skills of Nassau County children and adults by generating a lifelong love of books through an to be a voice for everyone!

I heard them, while sitting on my patio, as I sipped on my first cup of coffee of theTheday.revving of a heavy engine. The whine of hydraulics, followed by a loud thump, then the rattle and clang of glass and metal falling, jostling for position in some container. Then two more thumps, not as loud as the first one that had rumbled through the air. Then the whine of hydraulics, followed by the hiss of air brakes releasing, the revving of the engine, the hiss of air brakes being applied, and the cacophony of noise repeated itself. The garbage collectors were out and about trying to beat the heat which would climb to a heat index of 100 degrees plus before 1:00 PM. By then, those invisible people – the ones that keep our streets, yards, and parking lots from overflowing with garbage – would hopefully be home after eight hours of picking up behind us. Collecting the waste from our homes, the fire stations, the hospitals, the clinics, the police stations and all those other businesses and organizations that serve us. Us - - - you and me and our neighbors. These guys, the garbage collectors, are paid less than craftsmen and nurses and firemen; but I saw no signs thanking them for their work during the recent pandemic. I’ve seen no video clips of them suiting up and walking out to their trucks. A walk that they make every morning, rain or shine, hot or cold, normal workday or holiday. I guess they’re just not the heroes that we’re searching for. They’re just those guys picking up the garbage. Foery elaborated, "We provide a book to every student in Nassau County and then those authors come into the schools'. The students receive these books prior to the author’s coming to the schools so that they can engage with the authors. If you have never been a volunteer, it is great to see how engaged and excited these students get, to meet with the authors.” The authors that bring these books are local and regional authors. They come into the schools on Friday, spend time with students, then they come to the Authors' Expo & Readers Extravaganza on Saturday which is free to everyone. It is held at the Fernandina Middle School where there are 50 authors for children and 50 authors for adults. The authors meet consumers, sell books and have breakout sessions."
Foery looks to continue working with the Nassau Public Library and the two bookstores, The Book Loft and Story and Song. The Celebrity Author Gala this year features New York Times best-selling and award winning authors. The upcoming gala will feature David Baldacci who is also the AIBF Honorary Chair; Kate Quinn; Scott Turow and Jeannette Walls. The Scholarship Program in 2022 awarded two $5,000 scholarships to the winners of the writing contest, Avery Luft of Yulee High School, and Gracyn Frederick of Fernandina Beach High School. We asked President Foery if she could arrange for The Yulee News to communicate with Avery Luft of Yulee. This proved successful and we were able to contact Avery Luft by email and pose some questions. She provided well thought out, intelligent answers. The first question was, What was the topic of your essay? Ms. Luft’s response was, “The topic of my essay was on my favorite book; the perks of being a wallflower. This book was really significant to me because I had never met someone who I related to, about such serious issues, before reading the book. It felt like I was finally not alone in the issues I was struggling with. I struggle with anxiety and to read a book that explained some of my most exact situations and how it was dealt with, was really inspiring to me. To this day, it is still my all-time favorite book and I reread it frequently to remember I am not alone.” The second

Foery mentioned, “One new event that we would like to implement is “Family and Me” which would be providing a book to the heads of the household and then a book to any children in that household, a similar book. We are hoping to partner with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Nassau County to implement that as a new program.”
President Foery pointed out the 3rd grade reading level in Nassau County has fallen from 68% to 64% and that troubles her. She then talked about the future.

“What I want to accomplish as President especially in this year of full events and signature events, is to execute all of our events well and to get our community more engaged in literary works. What I want to do is continue expanding literacy in Nassau County and one of the very important things for me is, I think, people know more about the AIBC in Fernandina and Amelia Island because that is where it started so I would like to get more parents, students and Board members on our Board from Yulee, West Nassau, and the Hilliard areas because that’s the growth areas and we do not have Board members that are representative of these areas, but we have the opportunity for that.”

question was, What did winning the scholarship mean to you? Luft’s response was, “Winning the scholarship was really an incredible opportunity for me. I do not have the funds to go to college by myself, and this scholarship was such a gift for me to allow myself to further my education and my experience out in the real world. I am so grateful for this opportunity, and grateful to the people who loved my essay and saw the potential in me.” The third question was where are you going to school now? Her response was, “I am going to school in North Carolina, Western Carolina University. This was the best choice for me because I really wanted to experience life outside of a place I’ve known my whole life. I am moving on August 18th and couldn’t be more excited to start the next chapter of my life! Some of the things I’m interested in are sociology, dance, creative writing, and criminal justice. That’s 24,000 pounds of pizza boxes, Kleenex tissues, Styrofoam cups and cartons, old tee shirts, plastic bags, chicken bones, blown-out sneakers and who knows what else. One of these trucks, with its two-person crew, stops by my house every Tuesday to collect our household garbage. The average American family churns out over 5,700 pounds of garbage each year. I’m pretty sure that my family does better than that. The MSW landfill is the most common kind of landfill. These landfills have a four-layered system that consists of a liner (think of a bigger version of your garbage bag) to ensure that nothing is entering the water table or creating any sort of environmental hazard. A drainage system to collect the rainwater and other liquids which are then sent to a system of filters and tanks to be treated and disposed of. These landfills also have gas collection systems to capture the methane gas that is a by-product of decomposing garbage. Last of the four layers is the ever-growing mound of the trash itself. The MSWs are closely monitored to ensure that they are not causing any damage to our environment.Ithinkthat we all need to realize that all of the trucks, the equipment, the time for designing and building the landfills, all of that time and money would be useless without the people. Without those guys that deal with the flies, the stench, the dogs, the traffic and the heat during their eight-hour plus shifts; we would live in a world of knee-deep garbage, smokey skies, stinking water, armies of roaches and rats and swarms of flies.

The final question was, Do you and your family live in Yulee? The response was, “Yes! My family has been in Yulee for well over 100 years. My last name is sometimes misleading because I took it on my dad’s side. My other last name is Page, so I’m related to a lot of people known around Yulee. I’ve also lived here for my entire life, so I’m very excited to move somewhere new.”
The next time you see them, that army of nameless people that are virtually invisible to us as we go about our daily lives, if you’re within speaking distant, thank them. Offer a bottle of cold water. Slow down passing their truck when it’s stopped on the street. They’re doing a vital job for our society. They’ve been added to my list of heroes. Maintenance Shop.

Yes - First I want to thank everyone for your support. It has been an honor and a privilege earning your trust and vote. If we continue the way we are heading (20%+ turnover rate, 40%+ of our teachers in their 1st-3rd year of teaching), it is going to be harder and harder to keep our A rating. I believe with my extensive background in education, my positive and open mind-set, I would be a valuable addition to our school board in which I would humbly serve all the stakeholders throughout our county. I hope you will vote for Albert J. Wagner for School Board District 3. Early voting runs from August 10th - August 20th and the primary is held on August 23rd. If you have questions for me or If you need help getting to a voting location, contact me for assistance.
2. Do you support the parent rights bill recently passed in the state legislature?Yes.Florida's Parental Rights in Education" bill HB 1557 is about protecting our most vulnerable children who are a captive audience from sexual labeling and language. The bill reads, "Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards." I agree with this language of the bill. I believe at those ages we should respect the rights of parents to decide how they educate their children about those topics. Sexual language and Politics do not belong in the classroom.
1. Do you plan on using your school board position to run for school superintendent in two years? No. Unlike my opponent Mr. Gaus who has stated openly that the Board Seat is just a stepping stone to make a run for school superintendent in 2024 I will not run if elected to the school board. I am very happy in my current full time position working in special education & I believe with my background in education and my vocation towards community service I would be a greater asset to the community as a school board member.

3. Do you support fiscal transparency by developing a CBAC (Citizens Budget AdvisoryYES!Committee)?Oppositeof Mr. Gaus who is on record for saying he is not in favor of having a CBAC, I have been very vocal in my support of CBAC. I was disappointed when the board voted down the CBAC 4-1 (with only Dr. Grooms voting yes) at the last board meeting. I believe there is a growing distrust of the board (spending over $3 million on property that sold for a bit over $1 million a month earlier is just one example) and I don’t see the harm in having an Advisory Council that can only make recommendations to the board in a public meeting, unless of course you are trying to hide something.

4. Do you think CRT is being taught in our classrooms and if so, how would you address that? Do Parents have a part in your plan? I do not believe CRT is being taught in NCSD. To make sure it never does, I want to develop a parent oversight committee that helps in reviewing curriculum and library materials to make sure that sexual and racial literature is not being accidently exposed to our students. Personal political opinions do not have a place in our classrooms, no matter how you lean politically.

5. What is your vision for Nassau Schools? Is your vision going to change the entire dynamics of the school district? No. I hear rumors that we “ought to keep going on the same course” because the new board members will ruin our A rating. That is absurd. We have been an A rated school district for well over a decade. My vision is to be an A rated districtTechnicalin: Education • Fiscal Management • Staff Retention • Student Mental Health • Parent/Student Rights • Community Partnerships But most of all, I want our students to have the freedom to be themselves without fear of mental or physical harm so they can learn at their most optimal level.
There is a big distinction between my opponents and I. Whereas I favor Fiscal Transparency via CBAC, my opponent Mr. Gaus does not. Whereas I have openly committed to parent/student rights, especially when it comes to mandates, my opponent Mr. Gaus has not stated his opinion on mandates. Whereas my opponent Mr. Gaus already has plans to vacate the board seat and run for school superintendent; I humbly accept the 4 year responsibility of being a public servant. Whereas Mr. Gaus dismisses the concerns of parents on the Westside regarding access to our technical programs; I am listening and talking about ways we can do something different to help those students.7.Any Final Thoughts?
“It is time to bring the ‘We’ back in “We are Nassau” and start to work together again on making Nassau County the very best for ALL of our students and staff. Together we can work with our stakeholders, non-profits, and business to provide the quality of education that will allow our students to be them selves, to feel safe while learning, and to grow socially, emotionally and intellectually so they are ready for their lives outside of school no matter what direction they choose. Together we can put a plug in the mass exodus of staff to other districts or differnt careers and regain our reputation as the best district to work for. Our support staff, our teachers, our school administrators and our students deserve nothing less.”
