It’s time to do business again as Trade Days opens its doors in a few days’ time. In this issue you’ll find plenty of information about what you will find at the show, including details of a number of the seminars that take place over the two days, new products on offer and special exclusive show promotions taking place. At the end of the first day, I will be presenting the results of a survey that has been asking OTs a number of questions that they probably haven’t been ever asked before. We’ve been asking OTs questions such as how many retailers they are aware of in their area, how many of them have they visited, if they have ever been invited to visit, whether they would go if they were invited, whether they recommend them, if not, why not and a number of other questions too. The results are pretty interesting for both retailers and also suppliers selling through retailers, shedding light on how to build relationships with OTs and promote to them. £30,000 funding after declining Dragons Ellen Green, who walked away from the TV show Dragon’s Den with no funding, has secured a £30,000 investment for her Blue Badge Company. Despite three Dragons offering investment in return for a cut of the company, Ellen walked out empty-handed as she turned down an offer of £70,000 for a 35% stake from retail tycoon Touker Suleyman. Since filming, Ellen has secured £30,000 for Blue Badge Company from peer-to-peer loan company, Funding Circle, for no equity. Ellen told us: “Appearing on Dragon’s Den was just one of the many amazing experiences I’ve been fortunate to have since we launched the company. Despite turning down Touker’s final investment offer, we continue to go from strength to strength.” Blue Badge has now sold more than 100,000 of its wallets and expanded to produce a whole range of living aids including folding walking stick bags and lap trays. The workforce has grown from one to 20 in the past two

years after winning contracts to supply 2,500 Boots stores nationwide, the Post Office and Halfords. £1000 referral fee on offer at Trade Days Stiltz Lifts aims to sign up retailers to a lead referral scheme which enables them to earn up to £1,000 at Trade Days The company says that all the retailer has to do is collect the client’s details and pass it on to Stiltz to do the rest. The payment to the retailer is made within 30 days of the client completing the sale. Lachlan Faulkner, Director of Business Development told us: “The lead referral scheme has a great commission structure, various sizes of eye-catching point of sale and a simple process where the referrer just passes the customer’s details on to us and we take it from there. It couldn’t be easier.” On the stand at the show will be the Stiltz Duo Lift, which the

company says is the first and only domestic lift of its kind in the UK. Lachlan explained: “Our lift is a self-supporting structure thanks to our dual rail technology which means that no load bearing walls are required and no major structural work is needed. The Stiltz lift does not use hydraulics and is powered by an electric motor which is housed at the top of the lift and plugs straight into a normal 13amp power socket.” The company will be on stand C65 at Trade Days. Bespoke specialist goes for two brand approach at Trade Days At Trade Days this year, Primacare is taking the opportunity to highlight the different options that are available for retailers, with two separate stands, side by side. MD, David Tomlin explained the strategy: “Over the past couple of years we have expanded our retail offering and introduced the Prestige brand which is good quality, comfortable, but still bespoke furniture that is doing well through the retailers, while the chairs we sell under the Primacare brand are more bespoke and more technical. They tend to be sold to companies that are going down the OT assessment route or are selling more to care homes and hospitals.” David says that the business is growing well and with it, the space needed. “We are making more products and we are making more bespoke and technical products too. The more bespoke and technical we become, the more stock we need. For example, we have in stock 175 different actions. Having moved 5 years ago, to what was then a much bigger factory, we are now bulging at the seams and we have discussions taking place about extensions on land that we have bought behind the premises.” David says that both sides of the business are growing well as more and more people are becoming aware of what the company can do. “We wouldn’t have been able to cope with the level of demand we are experiencing now a couple of years ago. You have to build the business steadily if you are going to offer specialist products and so we have carefully managed a 10% growth each year. A lot of the additional business has been higher margin, but generally more complicated to produce. We have the capability of producing a very difficult design in a few weeks and we know that just because the chair happens to be very specialised, doesn’t mean that the client is prepared to wait a lot longer for it.” David is keen to point out that, although the Prestige brand is seen as being more ‘retail’ focussed in terms of someone seeing it in the showroom and ordering one, it definitely is still 10 www.thiis.co.uk

a quality offering. “On the Prestige brand, the growth there has been on quick deliveries of nice chairs, not quick deliveries of cheap chairs. There are cheap Chinese chairs around, but we are not trying to compete with them, that isn’t our policy. But, we do have a 144 option range that is available very quickly, almost next day, in very attractive fabrics.” The business has more people on the road now too, with some very experienced people. “Kent Meredith and Nigel Hall have come on board and both have a huge amount of experience and they have certainly helped to expand the retail offering.” David believes that the two stands at Trade Days will give the company the opportunity to tell the story better. “Some retailers are looking for quality chairs with “We are making more bespoke elements, while others are happy products and we are making to offer the more more bespoke and technical technical products and that’s what we’ll products too” be highlighting at the show. Is your brand drifting in a ‘sea of sameness’? One of the seminars at Trade Days is all about the importance of building a brand that customers can trust. Presenters Simon Preece and Kelly Broomhead from top brand consultancy Elmwood will suggest that many companies in the marketplace lead with negatives when they promote and explain what they mean by ‘positive health’. Elmwood has won more ‘International Design Effectiveness Awards’ than any other business and has a long list of clients including P&G, BBC, Unilever, Tesco and SSE. The company has offices in Leeds, London, New York, Singapore, Hong Kong and Melbourne. Account Director Kelly told us: “Customers are being constantly bombarded with messages through the press, email and social media. The fact is that people’s perceptions of health are changing and they are looking for something that is more optimistic.” She added: “There are a lot of negative health messages being used in the media and companies are tending to promote themselves in a very functional way. With many companies leading with negative images, we believe that a positive outlook is really important and will set businesses apart.” Kelly believes that a lot of emphasis is placed on the products and services on offer, often accompanied by complex data. That, she says, can mean that the actual brand is buried under the facts. “We know that 80% of our purchase decisions are emotionally driven and it’s difficult

to be emotional around data.” “It seems that everyone wants to be the same – ‘we want to look like healthcare providers’, but what do healthcare experts look like? Retailer award for Parkgate Parkgate Mobility won the TGA Regional Retailer of the Month Award for August. The company has 13 showrooms across Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Established over 40 years, the company is known nationally for its ‘scooter safe’ mobility scooter driver training. Tracy Simmons, co-director for Parkgate commented: “Our business continues to go from strength-to-strength and we have opened three new stores this year in Beeston, Castleford and Clay Cross.” She added: “Helping to educate scooter owners in ways to remain safe is a key focus for us. We have a working relationship with South Yorkshire Constabulary and free driver awareness courses are available at a centre

which has a set of mockup streets and houses used for educating people on a range of topics including fire, cycling and road safety. We use this and other outreach centres such as church halls, community centres and care homes to teach scooter users safe driving techniques. We are also advising the Government in terms of policies regarding scooter insurance and future safety legislation.”

New partner scheme for retailers Autochair, the vehicle adaptation manufacturer that was founded more than 30 years ago, is heading to Trade Days with a fresh new brand image and a new Partner Scheme for retailers. The company designs, manufactures and installs what it describes as ‘some of the bestengineered scooter and wheelchair hoists in the business’. The range includes a 40kg-80kg Mini-Hoist and the Olympian, which, with a lifting power of up to 200kg, the company says is the most powerful hoist on the market. Jules Allen, joined Autochair last year after 14 years at Acorn Stairlifts, where he was the Sales Director. He explained more about the new partnership scheme. “We are offering a commissions-based referral arrangement which is supported by a wide range of free point of sale material, including pull-up banners, leaflets and a demo unit. Agents will also receive realtime updates on their customers’ orders from a dedicated internal account manager, as well as access to back-up support from a team of service and installation engineers.” Jules says that customers will also benefit from free ‘try before you buy’ demonstrations of the hoists, as well as a fastrack delivery service. “We know how our hoists can change lives for the better,” said Jules. “One customer recently told us that she and her husband had gone on holiday for the first time in four years, simply because they were now able to get his scooter into their car boot. There must be tens of thousands more people who have bought a scooter but can’t get it into their car.” It isn’t the first time that Jules has developed a scheme for retailers. “I helped to establish a very successful partnership scheme at Acorn Stairlifts and I hope that by establishing a similar scheme for Autochair, we can work with the retailers who are selling the scooters to make sure that the process of buying a scooter and thinking about hoists can go hand-in-hand.” Autochair’s roots stretch back to 1979 when engineer David Walker, who had been confined to a wheelchair following a car accident four years earlier, invented a product that lifted his wheelchair up and into a box mounted on the top of his car. It was so successful that he formed Autochair in 1983, eventually handing over control of the company to his sons. The company now employs around 70 people and 16 www.thiis.co.uk

recently opened a new state-of-the-art extension to its factory in Alfreton, Derbyshire. The hoists can be fitted into more than 300 different makes and model of cars on the UK’s road and its technicians have installed them into everything from Porsches and Mercedes to Fords and Peugeots, carrying out their work either at their customer’s home or at the company’s factory. The company also manufactures the Milford Person Lift - a wheelchair-to-car transfer solution which gently lifts the user out of their wheelchair and into the car seat. It also supplies a range of other driving aids, including hand controls, transfer plates and steering balls. “Autochair has made tremendous progress in the past 12 months,” said Jules. “We have new products in the pipeline, a brand new logo, new website, new promotional literature and a 40-page brochure, while new systems and procedures have been put in place. Sales are up and we are looking forward to making our debut at Trade Days as it’s a great opportunity for us to spread the word about ourselves and form fruitful relationships with like-minded companies.” Autochair will be on stand F84 at Trade Days. Stuart takes MD role Cyclone Mobility has just announced that Stuart Dunne, the founder of the company, has taken on the role of Managing Director. In an undisclosed deal Dave Hawkins has left the company to pursue his interest in motorsport. Passing of industry pioneer A few weeks ago we lost one of our industry pioneers when Tom Morris, founder of Uniscan passed away. Tom set up Uniscan in 1983 and it’s fair to say that he revolutionised the walker market both in the UK and world-wide too. In his younger days, Tom was a promising footballer and during his National Service represented his regiment all the way to the overseas cup final that took place in Germany. Although Tom was the first to admit that his company had to embrace technology, he was never a big fan. In fact he never used a computer and would have been happy using a traditional day book to record everything - often to the amusement of sons Geoff and Paul. Tom did have a mobile phone but there was no guarantee he would switch it on, let alone use it. Tom leaves behind his Wife Betty, sons Geoff and Paul, their wives Tracey and Ruth and 5 grand-children.

Earn and learn at Trade Days There are plenty of opportunities to both earn and learn at Trade Days this year. As retailers and suppliers make last minute plans for the two day, trade-only event, the packed show floor and educational programme promises to keep visitors very busy indeed. Last year’s launch event was pretty impressive, with support from over 100 suppliers. This year sees the exhibition floor expanded and the introduction of companies such as Pride, Invacare and Ottobock. It means that the vast majority of suppliers to the retail trade are all at the show, many with special ‘show-only’ deals on offer for their existing and new customers. Some of those special offers will be very visible indeed as they will be on the THIIS stand right at the entrance to the show. It will be a good place to stop by at the start of your visit, just to see which companies are offering something a little special. With it being a trade-only audience, the only event in Europe to have that visitor profile, expect to spend more time having in-depth business discussions than you would at any other show. You can sit in a 30 minute marketing audit, which asks some powerful and sometimes scary questions, find out how to make the most of customer testimonials and referrals and learn why building a brand is important from a company that describes itself as ‘The world’s most effective brand design consultancy’. Understand how images are so important and how to use them is another session, along with an introduction on how to get the most from a social media campaign and finding out how to get yourself noticed online locally. Focus on improved outputs for Dartex Nine employees at medical fabric manufacturer Dartex Coatings have achieved Lean Six Sigma status. E equivalent to NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Business Improvement Techniques (Process Improvement) the process, often used in large manufacturing organisations, identifies and removes the causes of waste, errors and defects to improve outputs; leading to more streamlined and productive operations. For Dartex, it will enhance its production of polyurethane-coated textiles that are predominately used in the healthcare industry as mattress covers and support surfaces around the world. New sales focus for Sitting Pretty Sitting Pretty has appointed Tracey Gibson as their new Sales & Operations manager, as the company reports that it continues to show strong growth. Safety plug sales taking off According to Flexel, the number 5 has featured strongly recently in relation to the Flexel Airsafe plug. Omniserve, which takes care of PRM (passengers of reduced mobility) services at Heathrow and a number of other large Airports has ordered 5000 pieces. In addition, Ryanair has ordered 500 pieces for trial purposes. Flexel developed the product along with Active Controls and introduced the plug onto the market in 2012 following a request from the CAA to the BHTA in regards to an incident on an aircraft when a wheelchair caught fire on landing at Manchester Airport. In that incident, a piece of luggage had jammed the joystick open causing the motors to overheat, resulting in the wheelchair catching fire in the hold of the Aircraft. The Airsafe plug inhibits the wheelchair from becoming live therefore decreasing risk massively. Close to 20,000 plugs have now been sold. Successful auction returns to Trade Days Following what the company describe as ‘a phenomenal success’ when it was run for the first time at the launch of Trade Days last year, Kymco Healthcare will be running its ‘Products under a Hammer’ auction again. The auction, which attracted plenty of retailers to the Kymco stand last year, will see everything on the stand being auctioned off. BBC coverage for retailer scooter training BBC Spotlight paid a visit to Cornwall Mobility recently to film an item about a mobility scooter training programme which was developed following an accident in Truro earlier in the year when a man in his 90’s drove his scooter off the harbour wall and had to be rescued by the emergency services. The incident prompted Cornwall Mobility to develop their assessments looking into people’s health and attitude to other road users, and training them to use mobility vehicles safely. Cornwall Mobility CEO Edward Trewhella told us: “This is the first step of a long road towards rationalising the regulations around the use of mobility scooters. Chance meeting leads to new product development Discovering a new product that you believe will solve a problem is always exciting, but discovering one that could potentially solve a problem that you have been struggling with personally is even better. That’s what happened to Adrian Westbrook of Brook Miller a couple of years ago. The product in question was nothing to do with his existing business and came about simply because one of his customers was looking for a favour. Adrian takes up the story: “A customer who we were converting a vehicle for, asked me whether he could use our premises to have a meeting. He was helping in the development of a new product that was in its early stages. I had to sign a disclosure and so I sat in on the meeting and it became apparent to me pretty quickly that the product they were discussing was a great idea.” The product in question was a rechargeable battery operated, portable and travel friendly bidet. Adrian revealed that he had a very personal reason for taking an interest. “At the time I was suffering quite badly with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). It was a real issue when I was away from home and so seeing the idea for the product was a real eye-opener for me as I had strong empathy for the concept. So much so that I ended up buying the rights for the product from the designer.” It’s been a couple years in development and now the product is in production and on the market. Adrian is bringing the finished product to Trade Days as he believes it has great potential for retailers. “We had a prototype up and running pretty quickly and I have spent the last couple of years testing it and bringing it to various shows to get feedback. We saw very early that there was a great deal of interest in the product and a real need out there and so we have been busy sourcing components, making tools and getting 58 www.thiis.co.uk

Two years sounds a long time, but actually I think we have done well to get it to this stage in the timeframe, bearing in mind I have another business to run too.” Adrian’s other business, Brook Miller, has been adapting vehicles for 16 years. It also sells a good deal of wheelchairs and scooters too. “We have a strong succession plan in place” Adrian explains, “and we had a new General Manager join us 12 months ago and he has brought a lot of energy into the company and enabled me to focus on the development of the Porta-Bidet.” There has been a lot of thought put into the product as Adrian explains: “We have sourced all the components and have our battery especially produced for us, it isn’t off the shelf. It’s a very clever little product. Going large with new stick range Walking stick specialists Classic Canes will launch two new models of extra-large walking stick at Trade Days alongside its range of 650 traditional and contemporary walking sticks. The new models are the ‘Goliath’ derby: a 113cm wooden derby cane of extra-large proportions, which is suitable for normal use by walking stick users of up to 225kg (approximately 35½ stone), and the ‘Hero’ anatomic cane: a 100cm orthopaedic cane with an amber-effect handle available to fit either the left or the right hand, and suitable for normal use by walking stick users of up to 150kg (23½ stone). At 113cm, the ‘Goliath’ walking stick is suitable for people of approximately 6’6” to 7’0”, depending on the length of their arms.
