HOME MOBILITY BARRIERS
Research commissioned by home lift specialist Stiltz has revealed that while the majority of older adults in the UK want to stay in their homes as they age, many feel that the support they need to do so is lacking. The survey of 1,000 people aged 60 to 99 revealed that 92.4 per cent believe maintaining independence in their home is very important, with nearly 80 per cent expressing a preference to stay in their current homes as they age. Despite this, one in six said they have to avoid certain parts of their home due to mobility issues.

Green light for groundbreaking hearing aids
Tens of thousands of people with hearing loss will have access to groundbreaking new hearing aid devices, thanks to new UK Government guidance.
The guidance gives businesses around the world the green light to sell certain pioneering hearing aids in the UK. This includes earphones with both hearing test and hearing aid software functionalities.
Such revolutionary products allow someone to take a hearing test at home using their earphones and an app on their phone. If the test indicates mild to moderate hearing loss, the person can then switch on the hearing aid function on the same earphones.
This will make it easier and more convenient for patients to manage their own health and help to reduce associated risks like social isolation.
MOBILITY SCOOTER FATALITY
A senior West Yorkshire coroner has raised concerns about the potential dangers of mobility scooters following the death of a great-grandmother in a crash. The 65-year-old died after her mobility scooter collided with a pick-up truck in September 2023. An inquest into her death reported that she had activated the free-wheel mode via a lever near the rear wheel after exiting her property and failed to engage the engine with her ignition key.
Senior Bradford Coroner Martin Fleming has sent a Prevention of Future Deaths Report to the Department for Transport and Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). Turn to page 36 for industry thoughts on this topic.

THE RETAILERS’ CHOICE
Wondering
Walking aids
which walking aids are grabbing mobility companies’ attention?
This month we asked retailers in the industry to highlight one product that is standing out for them…
Rollz Motion Rollator by Rollz
“Over many years we have had many clients tell us that the rollator is the one single thing that makes the biggest difference to their mobility and their confidence in venturing out without further assistance.
“That being the case, as it will be used every day, we would encourage the client to buy the best suited to their needs rather than just buy on price.
“As a mobility retailer we always carry a broad selection to accommodate the range of needs presented to us. However, without doubt, if a client is in need of, and would benefit from, a rollator, our range of choice is from Rollz.
“The Rollz range is certainly in the 'better quality' end of the market and that shows in the quality of engineering and the materials used. The designs are exceptional and is based on real experience of many users to refine and improve the design over a number of years. Added to that the back-up and support from the UK team is second to none.
“Our particular favourite in the range, and the biggest seller, is the Rollz Motion, a combination of rollator and wheelchair. So, should the user run out of energy while they are out and about, they simply sit on it as a wheelchair to complete the trip.
“It comes in a variety of colours and has a number of accessories available to personalise it for the client. It also has a full two-year warranty for total peace of mind.”

Neptune Rollator from Able2
“Rollators are a huge seller in our showrooms, from lightweight folding models to bariatric models. One that is selling really well just now is the Neptune Rollator from Able 2.
“I think the main reason for this is that it has a modern look due to its black and grey finish.
“It is a lightweight rollator weighing only 7.1kg allowing you to lift it in and out of your car boot with ease. It can be used indoors and outdoors and works well on all surfaces. It comes with eight-inch PU front swivel wheels and seven-inch PU rear wheels.
“It can fold away easily for storage if
space is an issue also.
“One of the selling points of this rollator is that it comes with a cup holder and crutch holder. It comes with a bag with a shoulder strap allowing you to transport your shopping with ease.
“The maximum user weight of this rollator is 18 stone (120kg). Our customers can choose between black or champagne. We find the champagne is more popular among females customers.
“We like this rollator at Thistle Help and will continue to stock this in both our showrooms.”
Carlett Shopping Rollator by Force Healthcare
“One of our all time favourite walking aids is the Carlett Shopping Rollator.
“It has a dual function which enables it to act as both a walking aid and a shopping trolley with a 38-litre capacity in its large shopping bag.
“It is also manufactured with an aluminium frame, making it lightweight and easy to manoeuvre.
“The large shopping bag is covered with a comfortable padded seat – ideal for taking breaks whilst out and about.
“The height-adjustable handle bars ensure that the Carlett can be adjusted to suit the height of most users. It also includes a unique single-bar brake handle which is most unusual for a rollator and enables the brake to be applied with just one hand.
“The front wheels swivel to help with manoeuvrability and it also folds easily for storage and transportation.
“There is also a storage basket on the back and a holder for a stick or umbrella. It really is one of the most versatile walking aids we have come across and it is a hit with our customers.”
Julia Phipps Director of The
Superstore
Forearm Walker by Dash Rehab
“The Forearm Walker is a stylish, lightweight four-wheeled walker that can help keep the user walking in an upright position promoting proper posture. The user utilises the forearms, and it allows the upper bodyweight to be supported via padded armrests.
“The easy-to-operate brakes allow the user to control speed so maximising safety and security. It can be used in and around the home and walking round town. The key advantage of a forearm walker is that the user can get more support higher up the body, which tends to increase support and reduce stooping. It also reduces strain on the wrists and hands and makes it ideal for those with reduced dexterity.
“The forearm walker has an aluminium frame, PU solid castors, padded seating, and comes with a
backrest, bag and walking stick holder as standard. “The height has nine different adjustments, so you have the flexibility to find the fit that’s right for the individuals needs.
“As people age, their joints become stiffer and muscle strength declines so a benefit of this style of walker is that it decreases pain and promotes user independence.
“The Dash Rehab forearm walker has a user weight of 136kg and weighs only 8.4kg. It comes in an elegant champagne colour.”

What actually is an AGM ?
AGM refers to Absorbent Glass Mat, but what implications does this have for your battery?
AGM batteries are a specific type of lead-acid battery where the electrolyte is held within a glass mat surrounding the lead plates. This unique design allows the energy to be stored in a suspended state, providing a stable and consistent cycle. It also offers protection to the plates, leading to a longer lifespan, increased usage, and resistance to vibrations, all while being maintenance-free.
Haze Classic collection
If we delve deeper, the design of the lead plates themselves is also distinct, but if you want more information on this, give us a call.
Let’s be honest, batteries aren't the most glamorous products out there. In the realm of mobility and mobility scooters, they might be the last thing on your mind, but they are crucial to consider. Without batteries, you won’t be going anywhere!
So, what are your options? You might first think about the size of your battery; however, have you considered the technology behind it? Let’s go over the essentials. Our most popular battery line comes from the Classic Collection, featuring the HAZE AGM. This is the ideal battery for you if you use your scooter seasonally, don’t travel long distances frequently, and when you do, it’s on flat, even terrain. This battery is perfect for your needs.
Range, Reliability, and Performance
The primary goal of your battery should be to transport you from point A to point B seamlessly. Haze has been refining AGM technology specifically designed for scooters for years, which is why they are recognized as an original equipment manufacturer.
An OE product is great; it signifies that trusted brands also rely on our products and integrate them into their scooters during production. For instance, Sunrise Medical scooters utilize Haze batteries in their Q300 and Q400 models.
Now you understand the composition of the Classic AGM and the audience it caters to. The Classic AGM comes in a comprehensive size range for all scooters.
Easystart Batteries have been the sole seller of Haze within the UK since 2003!

“Adding a touch of style, this folding walking stick is adorned with a charming garden bird design, available with a Robin, Blue Tit, Kingfisher, or Chaffinch. Simple, reliable, and functional, it's the perfect choice for anyone looking for both practicality and elegance.”
Rhian Pita Marketing Manager at Ableworld ableworld.co.uk
Fold Down Rollator by Dash Rehab
“One of our most popular walking aids is the Fold Down Rollator from Dash Rehab at RHealthcare, an excellent option for those seeking a practical, lightweight, and userfriendly walking aid. Designed with both convenience and comfort in mind, this rollator is an ideal choice for individuals who need reliable support while maintaining an active lifestyle.
“One of the key features of the Fold Down Rollator is its lightweight aluminium frame, which ensures ease of handling without compromising on durability. Its clever folding mechanism allows users to quickly fold it down for storage or transport, making it perfect for trips out and about or for those with limited space at home. The compact fold ensures it fits easily into car boots or small storage areas.
“In terms of comfort, the Fold Down Rollator features height-adjustable handles with ergonomic grips, allowing users to customise it to their preferred height and ensuring a comfortable experience during use. The padded seat and backrest offer a convenient place to rest when needed, making it
particularly useful for longer outings. Additionally, the integrated shopping basket provides practical storage for personal belongings, further enhancing its functionality.
“What sets the Fold Down Rollator apart is its combination of sturdiness, manoeuvrability, and convenience. The smooth-rolling wheels and secure braking system make it easy to navigate different surfaces safely, offering users increased confidence when walking.
“Overall, the Fold Down Rollator from Dash Rehab is a reliable, versatile solution for individuals who require additional support without sacrificing mobility or independence. Its thoughtful design and ease of use make it a product we confidently recommend.”

Turning ideas into a great business
Northampton-based Medpage has been manufacturing and distributing its own-brand medical devices to aid independent living for 40 years. Mike Dines, Managing Director of Medpage discusses how he turned an idea into an invention and creating a business…
Sometimes, I find it difficult to believe that more then 40 years have passed since our introduction to assistive technology. My brother and I started our business based on an idea to help deaf people.
While visiting my grandfather in a care home, I was introduced to a lovely deaf lady by my mother. I was fascinated by her alarm clock, particularly the unusual array of wires and cables involved.
Annie took great pleasure in showing me how it worked. When the clock reached alarm time a vibrating mechanism under her pillow woke her up. I said to her that it would be better if all the parts were in a clock to be placed under her pillow.
She said that would be great but there isn’t one available. Having gained qualifications in electronics, for the first time I realised there may be a benefit to all that study.
I sketched out a few ideas, fashioned a circuit diagram, then ordered the parts from RS Components in Corby. To the annoyance of my wife, I turned the kitchen into a workshop and began to piece together the parts. After some minor head scratching and burning a chopping board with a soldering iron, I had the prototype working as planned. I showed it to my brother, who was amazed at my ingenuity.
TURNING IDEAS INTO INVENTIONS
During 1984, Corby was a town suffering after the closure of the steelworks, the town’s major employer. Corby was awarded New Town status and several government agencies moved in to help rebuild the town. The Commission for the New Towns was offering a multitude of grants to encourage new businesses and prop up companies affected by closure of ‘The Works’.
We applied for a grant to start a business, nothing to do with my idea. During our interview we showed the gentleman the device. We were amazed that he knew instantly what it was, and said, “do you have a patent”? In a flash, we were introduced to a patent agent, who drafted a patent and told us we had invented an alarm clock for deaf people.
I could write a very entertaining book on how we managed to persuade a company in China to manufacture the clock for us. It was the start of a journey. News of this revolutionary new alarm clock quicky spread among the deaf community, attracting the attention of the Royal National Institute for Deaf people, which helped launch the clock, later branded the “Shake
Awake” on an international scale. We attended a conference in Brighton in 1990; yes, the one where Princess Dianna became the first Royal to use British Sign Language. We had the privilege to meet her, and despite several attempts to persuade her to accept one of our clocks, we failed to gain “By Royal Appointment” status. Nonetheless, it was a major stepping stone for our business and one that made us very proud.
The inventions continued to flow, including a home smoke alarm warning for deaf people, a baby monitor for deaf parents, and a vibrating pager system using multi-channel radio signalling
“After some minor head scratching and burning a chopping board with a soldering iron, I had the prototype working as planned”
Shake Awake SA3
to provide a portable warning/alert to sounds around the home, including doorbell, baby crying, phone ringing, and smoke alarm.
A NEW DIRECTION
During 1993, the direction of our business changed after a telephone enquiry from an occupational therapist, who had found us through the RNID (Royal National Institute for Deaf People), describing us as experts in vibration.
The OT explained that she had a 13-year-old client with epilepsy causing near destruction of the family. The mother was having to sleep with her daughter because of the frequency and severity of her seizures. She asked if we knew anything about epilepsy. “Not really”, was our reply. She went on to describe what seizures were, how and why they happened, and what typically happens to the body during one. She went on to say that she would send us an information pack and asked if we could help.
We read the information sent to us by the OT, which provided some valuable information. With no internet at the time to research further, several trips to the library provided some missing data. We had a huge problem to solve: how to make a device that would detect seizures.
Bearing in mind that microprocessors were not available at that time, we needed something special to come up with a solution for this one. Then, one day, I was making a cup of coffee, and, as I was returning the milk to the fridge, I had an idea how we could make a sensor that would detect the seizure movement.
The original design tested my electronics abilities to the limit, but I succeeded somehow. We produced several prototypes and began testing the design. After several weeks of testing, including my children simulating seizures while I recorded readings from test equipment I had rigged up in the bedroom, we were satisfied we had created a working solution.
The prototype was sent to the OT to deliver to her family. Several weeks went by before we were contacted by the OT, who informed us that the device had been in use for three weeks and had proved 100 per cent successful. The mother was back in bed with her
hubby, and she had informed epilepsy organisations of this new remarkable device. We had invented a seizuredetecting alarm for epilepsy.
The seizure alarm was the first of its kind, hence our patents, that provided a wireless alarm to carers and parents of an ongoing seizure. This device catapulted us into the world of medical devices. We achieved accreditation to ISO 13485 for the manufacture of medical devices and began to develop new technologies, focussing on personal safety and falls prevention. We launched the first wireless bed- and chair-leaving detection alarms in the UK.
DEMENTIA CARE PRODUCTS
As my parents aged, it provided an opportunity to develop new ideas for products that would be useful for them based on their daily living needs. Dad was becoming a bit forgetful and becoming frustrated when forgetting things from their daily routine.
I came up with the idea for a memory-prompting alarm clock. I prepared a design brief and discussed it with one of our manufacturing partners. After a short while we had prototypes to test, and I had the perfect guinea pigs for the job.
At first Dad was very reluctant, as he didn’t want to admit there was a problem. That soon passed when he forgot to give Mum her diabetes tablet one day. The basic version of the clock allowed for six voice recordings, each assignable to an alarm time setting. The clock really proved its worth, and, during 2006, the brand MemRabel was established. The clock was launched into the UK social care network and quickly became very popular. We had invented a clock to aid carers and people with dementia.
Over the years there have been major advances in assistive technologies as
microprocessors became available and more affordable. As a manufacturing company in the UK with more than 100 own-brand products improvements to new and old technology are at the forefront of our business model. This was further enhanced when my son joined the company after completing a master’s in electronic engineering.
Our products for epilepsy seizure detection were redeveloped to use microprocessors with complex software algorithms to positively identify seizure movements from a sleeping person. Seizure data can be relayed to healthcare professionals for analysis, multiple systems can be installed for multiple patient monitoring and can be integrated with external equipment.
Our MemRabel dementia care products now operate on computer tablets that play media files, such as photos and videos to help people with memory problems at selected alarm times. Daily tasks can be scheduled to help people with autism or cognitive impairment. Families can communicate with loved ones who would otherwise struggle with the likes of smartphones, tablets, or computers.
So much has changed over the past 40 years with healthcare and social care, largely influenced by technology. Whether it be computerisation of management systems, communications, or equipment used to aid care support packages for service users it has been a privilege to be part of it.
Awareness of these marvellous gadgets to help families care for their loved ones is so important but, sadly, neglected in mainstream retail. There exists an opportunity for collaboration with the industry to make assistive tech products more accessible directly available to the public.

An event hosted by
Sun, sea and superstore
Mobility Matters recently opened its third superstore in the seaside town of Ayr. THIIS catches up with the owner, Robert Frew, to find out more…
Established in 2016, Mobility Matters is a family-run retailer covering Ayrshire and the surrounding counties in Scotland.
One of Ayrshire’s largest independent stockist of scooters, furniture and daily living aids, its owner, Robert Frew, opened a brand-new superstore in the seaside town of Ayr, on Scotland’s southwest coast, in January. He also has two other superstores in Kilmarnock and Irvine.
Robert, who prior to setting up Mobility Matters had been working as a sales manager and engineer of specialist wheelchairs, couldn’t be happier with the new store in Ayr, which is a spacious 6,500 square feet in size. “We have 105 mobility scooters on display, 30 rise & recliners, 30 electric wheelchairs and 30 manual wheelchairs.”
It is quite the change from Mobility Matters’ previous showroom in Ayr, which had been going for several years on the main high street and could probably hold around 20 mobility scooters.
“The building was becoming a bit outdated,” says Robert. “With the products that were available we just couldn’t cater properly for our customers due to the space.”
When the opportunity to purchase a larger new unit at the top of town came up, and at a good price, he says that he couldn’t say no.
SEASIDE TOWN
The new superstore is ideally located, says Robert, being just a couple of hundred yards from the high street, and it has got disabled parking outside.
“If someone needs a mobility scooter they can start at the top of the town, go right to the bottom of the town and come back up,” he comments. “We’re 10 minutes away from the beach, or five minutes away from the beach if they want to take a scooter down to the beach. It’s very, very accessible.”
The premises itself used to
“We have 105 mobility scooters on display, 30 rise & recliners, 30 electric wheelchairs and 30 manual wheelchairs”
accommodate a shop that had been physically closed for several years, but Robert managed get the shop ready for business in about two weeks.
The town of Ayr has always been a popular holiday location on the west coast of Scotland, explains Robert. There is a lot of summer traffic, and it has always flourished.
The high street in Ayr, however, was gradually getting “reduced and reduced and reduced” over time with shop closures.
Shopmobility, the equipment rental service that enhances accessibility and independence in shopping centres, used to operate in the town from a small premises but even this closed down. Robert has said that he is now going to be providing that service to customers.
Says Robert: “Mobility Matters

With the new premises Robert was looking to showcase a comprehensive and large selection of products to customers, which he believes is one of the largest selections in the UK.
“We are an ageing population. Local authorities are no longer spending money or giving certain daily living aids away, and the range is that much that you have to be able to show it,” he says.
“The amount of people who are buying mobility equipment online and making mistakes is crazy. I wanted to be able to provide a store where customers can walk in, they can see a
product up-close, they can try it and they can buy it – a one-stop shop.”
Certainly, Robert couldn’t be happier to see this confirmed with the amount of footfall coming into his superstores. “I’ve done nothing to publicise it apart from a little bit on social media and I’ve taken about £10,000 a day already. It’s all been through word of mouth and reputation.”
STORE BESTSELLERS
Mobility scooters in particular have been flying out of the door, Robert comments, particularly models such as the Kymco Midi XLS road mobility scooter and Motion Healthcare’s Airscape. The eFoldi Lite, a lightweight folding mobility scooter, has been popular with customers who need a portable scooter that can fit comfortably
The showroom is easily accessible
There is plenty of product choice to get customers moving

into a small car or on public transport.
Robert notes that many suppliers at the moment are jumping onto rise & recliners, from Scooterpac to Electric Mobility, and indeed he has been able to supply more rise & recliners in his new superstore.
Rise & recliner brands being stocked
in the new superstore include the wellestablished Rise & Recline and Vale Recliners, a newer Scottish supplier.
Sunrise Medical’s Quickie Q50R Carbon, a folding powered wheelchair launched last year, has “done exceptionally” for the business, and Robert thinks that it will continue to
be so. He says that its appeal is down to customers looking for a lightweight folding power wheelchair that is easy to transport, store, and manoeuvre.
The manager of the showroom is Barry Broughton, Robert’s nephew, who has been working for the business for a few years now. A former salesman for Mercedes, Barry used to manage the shop on Ayr’s main street and did such a great job with turning the business around that he was given the opportunity to take on the new superstore. Robert says that he has proven to be “second to none”.
Robert hopes that the strong work ethic that he and the team has at Mobility Matters will keep the customers coming. It also helps, he says, to have the addition of Natalie Gray, who as accounts manager, has been helping to manage the business. Comments Robert: “She oversees the three stores and she has been helping to rebuild the brand. Together we have fine-tuned the business and we’re really looking forward to this year.”

Australian brand Aidacare is currently looking to establish itself in the UK mobility market…
Aidacare was established in Australia over 38 years ago and it made the move across to the UK in 2022. The firm specialises in mobility equipment such as wheelchairs and walking aids, as well as rise & recliners, moving & handling equipment and care home beds. THIIS speaks to Daniel Borrow, UK Sales Manager at Aidacare, to find out more…
CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR STORY WITH AIDACARE?
“I joined Aidacare over 10 years ago, and prior to moving to the UK, managed a territory in Queensland, Australia, that was geographically 2.5 times the size of UK with the population similar to that of Sheffield.
“I have specialised in the past in the

complex rehab side of the business as well as managing retail showrooms. My family and I packed up and moved to the UK in 2022. I am extremely grateful to have the support and experience of the Australian business to assist with guiding our way in the UK market.”
WHAT HAS BEEN A STANDOUT PROJECT AT AIDACARE FOR YOU SO FAR?
“Aidacare successfully entering the UK market is by far the standout achievement in my time with the business. Along with this every time we effectively release a new product to market is equally as satisfying, as I know first-hand the amount of time getting the product right before release takes.”
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT AIDACARE’S SET UP IN THE UK?
“Our distribution centre is in Buckinghamshire. We have business development managers located across the UK. Aidacare manufactures and sources products from throughout the world, including the UK, Australia, Asia, Europe and America.
“We brought a small range of products initially to the UK that we
understood as being core products from our Australian range. Then, after some appropriate market research and listening to what our customers were asking for, we were able to pivot to the current product range that we now have. We are now very confident with our growing product portfolio.”
CAN YOU DESCRIBE
A COUPLE OF THE LATEST PRODUCTS TO BE RELEASED FROM AIDACARE?
“Aidacare has recently released a number of new products. To name a few that give me the most excitement are the Aspire Evoke Wheelchair, which is our adjustable crash-tested wheelchair. Available in six different seat widths, it has the ability to adjust seat depth, height and angles. It really is a great all-round wheelchair.
This has given our dealers confidence in the quality of the product.”
WHAT PRODUCT IS A CONSISTENT BESTSELLER FOR AIDACARE?
“Another new product is our Aspire Posture Fit Rise Recliner Chair – this is our configurable/adjustable pressure relieving chair.”
WHAT KIND OF RESPONSE HAVE YOU RECEIVED TO THESE FROM PARTNERS?
“Our dealer network has really embraced, firstly, our business in the UK and, secondly, supported us through the release of all our new (to the UK) products. Many of the products we have released here in the UK have been selling through our 90+ Aidacare retail stores in the Southern Hemisphere for a number of years.
“Consistently for the last couple of years our Aspire Vida Wheelchair has been a leading seller, with its lightweight frame, great warranty and solid weight capacity. It provides a little bit of colour to the showrooms it is in throughout the country.
“The Aspire Vida is available now in three seat widths, four different colours (green, orange, olive and mustard) and we now have a magnesium version of this chair to add to the lightweight aluminium version. It offers a generous 21-stone weight capacity, whilst still remaining lightweight, weighing in at 7.5kg.”
THIS ISSUE IS FOCUSED AROUND WALKING AIDS. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT AIDACARE’S RANGE OF WALKERS?

long time in Australia, and on the back of the success we have had, we decided it was a perfect accompaniment to our existing range in the UK.
“The range consists of lightweight carbon fibre rollators, which are available in multiple sizes and colours. They include our Indoor Walker, the Offroad/HD Walker and Forearm Walker.”
CAN YOU SHARE ANY DETAILS ABOUT ANY NEW PRODUCTS SET TO BE RELEASED IN THE UK THIS YEAR?
“We intend on releasing a few new products at Naidex this year. Without giving too much away, they will be light, colourful and great quality! A visit to our stand at Naidex this year will reveal all.”
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT HOW YOUR PRODUCTS ARE DISTRIBUTED IN THE UK?
“Our products are available via our dealer network. With a central warehouse located in Buckinghamshire
we are well set up for quick and efficient delivery throughout the UK.”
ARE YOU LOOKING TO EXPAND YOUR UK DEALER NETWORK?
“Aidacare is actively looking to increase its dealer network throughout the whole of the UK. New dealer enquiries are welcome at sales@aidacare.co.uk.”
WHAT CAN AIDACARE OFFER DEALERS WHO COME ONBOARD?
“As well as new dealers we are focused on the continued support and growth of our existing dealers through good service, quality products and competitive pricing.”
WHAT’S NEXT FOR AIDACARE OVER THE NEXT 12 MONTHS?
“Aidacare expects continued growth over the next 12 months. We will be

What needs to change now that mobility scooters are in the Highway Code to make them safer?
“At eFOLDi, we strongly advocate for the inclusion of mobility scooter users in the Highway Code. These figures are not just statistics; they represent real people whose lives were tragically cut short.
“The fact that mobility scooter users are nearly three times more likely to be killed in a road collision compared to other road user groups is concerning.
“This heightened risk is a clear indicator that current road safety measures are insufficient for protecting these vulnerable individuals, particularly as mobility scooter usage is expected to increase due to an ageing population and a rising prevalence of disabilities.
“The existing Highway Code, updated in January 2022, introduced a “Hierarchy of Road Users” to prioritise
the safety of the most vulnerable. However, the absence of mobility scooter users from this hierarchy leaves a critical gap in protection.
“eFOLDi is fully committed to the safety and well-being of its customers. We believe that including mobility scooter users in the Highway Code will not only enhance their safety but also raise awareness among other road users about the unique challenges they face. It is time for policymakers to recognise the importance of this issue and take decisive action.
“From an industry perspective, manufacturers and retailers have a duty of care and should always follow best practice, by undertaking ‘pre-sale’ user assessments to ensure that customers are well informed and capable of safely operating their mobility scooters. At
Tim Ross
National Sales Manager at eFOLDi efoldi.com
eFOLDi, we require all retail partners to conduct thorough assessments to maintain the highest standards in respect to user safety and consumer protection.”
“Powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters (PWMS) are covered in the Highway Code, although like the updated Department of Transport Guidance which now includes “not in class” products, further clarification and guidance is needed.
“Our customers say the issue for them is that car drivers aren’t aware that road-legal products are allowed on the road, even reporting verbal abuse.
“We had one distressed customer call us to double check she was allowed on the road, because she had been stopped by the police and told she wasn’t. We called the police station on her behalf to outline the rules, as the officers that stopped her hadn’t been aware of them. So maybe covering the use of powered products in professionals training and in the Theory Driving Test will go some way to better educate others.
“On the PWMS users side, in the absence of any official test or qualification, currently the best route to educate users is via conscientious retailers carrying out driver safety awareness and competency checks as advocated through Driving Mobility’s, Department for Transport-funded,
“Since September 2023, mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs have been included in the Highway Code, with rules governing their safe use. However, their inclusion alone is not enough to ensure safety. The focus must shift to education, enforcement, and awareness.
“The Highway Code specifies speed limits, road behaviour, and visibility guidelines. Class 2 scooters are limited to 4mph and restricted to pavements, while Class 3 scooters can travel up to 8mph and are road legal. Despite these rules, there is no requirement for users to undergo training, unlike car drivers who must pass a driving test. This gap leads to misunderstandings, unsafe practices, and accidents.
“Voluntary training schemes, similar to bicycle safety courses, could help users navigate roads and pavements safely. Additionally, public awareness campaigns are crucial for educating drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians on how to interact with mobility scooters.
“Enforcement is another challenge. Without a registration system, identifying and penalising violations is
training scheme for retailers.
“However, this doesn’t reach users of self-sourced second-hand and/ or very old products and/or poorly maintained products. We have a lady in Inverness that got her original scooter over 20 years ago and was looking to replace it. We did a home visit with the requested 8mph products to choose from. Now in her 90s, she refused to do a test drive and insisted she was a safe driver at 8mph on the pavement.
“We suggested she get a 4mph but would need to see her drive it, but she still refused. Our conscience wouldn’t let us sell her a scooter, although we know via our service team that she did source another 8mph scooter elsewhere!
“Maybe there is a need for a special PWMS qualification at set intervals to ensure as people get older, or as
their health deteriorates, they are still safe and competent on products? Alternatively, or in addition, perhaps there could be an annual service on products to ensure they remain roadworthy as with cars.”
“Currently the best route to educate users is via conscientious retailers carrying out driver safety awareness and competency checks”
difficult. Introducing a basic registration framework for Class 3 scooters could improve accountability. Manufacturers can also contribute by adding safety features like speed limiters and better lighting.
“Collaboration is essential. Local authorities must ensure pavements and crossings are accessible, while users should be encouraged to follow the rules. Public awareness campaigns can foster respect and understanding among all road users.
“By focusing on education, enforcement, and collaboration, we can create a safer environment for everyone.”

What makes a good trunk support? 4. Back support measures
Within a seating system, the primary support surfaces are the seat cushion and back support. What are the measures of a back support that offer up a good fit for the occupant?
Many accessories to a seating system are two dimensional and therefore are easy to describe and to measure. Back supports tend to be more complicated because most offer a mix of posterior and lateral support, with differing functional needs at different points along the length of the upper body.
Back supports are usually prescribed to support different, but at the same time, ‘articulated’ parts of the body. The back bone of the trunk is a collection of separate components, the vertebrae, most of which can articulate to a degree in three dimensions, and therefore each of which has an individual degree of need of support. These separate, but connected, components all provide for flexibility of body position, but at the same time provides multiple areas where
intervention and support may be required to prevent deterioration or damage – hence the need for a back support that can manage these components while permitting the greatest degree of freedom.
BACK SUPPORT MEASURES
Managing these needs is the remit of the prescribing individual, but how can the manufacturer describe the measures of the different elements of their back supports so that the prescriber knows which one to order?
The ISO wheelchair seating standards task group has come up with a series of terms and their definitions for complex seat cushions, and these will be part of the revision of ISO 16840-11 when it gets published (if you would like more detail of these in the
meantime, please drop me an email). However, to date there has not been a recommendation for the terminology for even basic back supports, and the intent of this article is to put some suggestions forward.
The complexity, for even the more simple back supports, is the range of components involved. This includes i) the mounting hardware (which pertains to the wheelchair’s dimensions), ii) the back support supporting structure (e.g. shell), and iii) the attached back support cushion (which pertains to the occupant’s dimensions).
The existing standardised terminology covers the basic starting points. Width is the size dimension from left to right. Depth is a front to back size dimension. Length is a top to bottom size dimension. Thickness is the size dimension under and at

right angles to the support surface itself. Height, on the other hand, is a placement measure and is defined as the distance from the top of a reference point on the back support component to a fixed point elsewhere.
For example, the back support out of the box has a length (Figure 1, A), but does not have a height until it is attached to the chair: at this point, the height is the distance from the top of the back support to the top of the seat cushion (Figure 1, B) at whatever angle the back support is reclined.
This is not to be confused with the vertical height which is important to see if the chair will fit into a vehicle, for example, and which is the vertical distance from the top of the support to a horizontal projection from the top of the seat cushion (Figure 1, C).
MOUNTING HARDWARE DIMENSIONS
Some wheelchairs have their back supports mounted on a central pillar, often known as a Captain’s seat, and which is more common on scooters. However, most wheelchairs have a pair of vertical poles which are usually placed as far apart as the tubing of the seat support structure. It is this width that is normally ascribed to the
‘width’ of the back support. The existing standard for wheelchair dimensions, ISO 7167-72 , defines as Dimension 8 the back support structure width as the maximum width at a height between 200 and 500 mm from the seat surface on a loaded chair. However, the illustrative figure (Fig. 17) suggests the points for measurement on each side of the chair are from different parts of the tube, depending on where an existing canvas is attached.
This standard is being revised, and the proposal is that the chair back support structure width be stated as being the maximum distance across the outside of the vertical tubes (Figure 2). This measure in the standard is currently made after the chair seat has been loaded with a weighted dummy since the distance between the uprights can decrease in folding chairs, though is less likely in chairs with a rigid frame.
If the back support is mounted in front of the uprights, then the support
itself could in practice be wider than the distance between the supports: otherwise it will need to be narrow enough to fit between the poles, which will be the ‘Dimension 8’ less the diameter of the poles.
These days most back supports are supplied with two-point mounting options to accommodate the paucity of space on the uprights for four-point mounting systems, especially for back supports with a short length. Many hardware mounting systems have built into them adjustability for variations in width, height, and angle.
These should be described by the manufacturer in mm and degree ranges respectively. In some cases, width and height adjustments are provided in addition or alternatively by slots in the back support support structures. The width adjustability not only accommodates for variability in the upright poles’ width variability, but also allows the back support to be mounted in an offset position, if needed to accommodate a scoliotic spine, for example.
BACK SUPPORT SUPPORT STRUCTURE
The back support support structure (BSSS), is possibly a board of some type in a planar (flat) seating system, but in most cases it is a ‘shell’. The BSSS provides the means to have the back support attached to the mounting hardware on the one side, and the back support cushion on the other. The shell structure measures are likely to be slightly smaller than the attached

Figure 2. Seat frame width (DD) measure (view from above)
cushioning so that the occupant is protected from injury from the edges of the shell. The BSSS is also the structure to which ancillary support items such as anterior, lateral, or head supports are attached.
The key measures for the BSSS are going to be a mix of its linear two-dimensional measures, its surface measures, and the measures of any additional elements for both mounting hardware and also for other accessories. Figure 3 provides illustrations of key measures and suggestions for relevant naming for a standard shell. Where the shell has integrated elements for additional lateral support, these should be
A BSSS length
E Length to bottom of BSSS vertical slot
F Length to top of BSSS vertical slot
G Length of BSSS vertical slot
H BSSS maximum width
J BSSS surface width
K BSSS depth
L BSSS planar area width
M BSSS integrated lateral support length
N BSSS integrated lateral support depth
ascribed additional measures to cover their attributes (Figure 3, M and N).
BACK SUPPORT CUSHION
The back support cushion is the interface between the occupant and the back support, and so these measures are the ones that are needed to meet the relevant measures of the occupant.
From the posterior aspect, the
amount of support needed is a limited width (Figure 4, Q). If a pressure mapping system is used to assess the surface contact on a planar back support, the contact surface is unlikely to be more than 200mm wide.
However, most back supports are wider than this to accommodate the back support mounting system, to enable the addition of further positioning accessories, and usually to provide some lateral support to a lesser or greater degree.
PRACTICALITIES
These measures are suggestions to cater for off-the-shelf after-market back supports, and are therefore not applicable to more custom-seating solutions such as foam-carve or
FreeForm types of supports. They cover linear measures on the whole and relate mainly to items as supplied by a manufacturer.
In the next article we will cover measuring the individual to enable us to prescribe the most suitable product match for the individual’s dimensions, as well as selecting the appropriate back support and set-up for that

individual’s needs. Part of the set-up includes selecting the appropriate angle for placing the supports on the wheelchair frame.
The foundations for these measures were covered in previous articles, in the Measurements in Seating series. Further guidance can be found in Waugh and Crane’s Clinical Application Guide to the ISO 16840-1 measures3.
