Magnelite Transit and Self-Propelled Wheelchairs from Motion Healthcare

“We have supplied a wide range of manual wheelchairs over the years and compared to the early days of our business, the wheelchairs have come a long way and now look much more sleek and modern.

Excel G-Logic Wheelchair from Van-Os Medical

“Our choice at TPG DisableAids for manual wheelchairs is the range from Van-Os Medical, or soon to be Excel Mobility.

“Any mobility retailer with a shop will need a range of manual wheelchairs to satisfy a varied need from occasional user to full time active user.

“The G-Logic chair from Van-Os will fall somewhere in the mid-range. It is lighter and more manoeuvrable than the steel entry chairs and has a few useful features for the discerning customer.

“Quick-release wheels, aluminium frame, adjustable armrests and choices of fabric colour make this a more attractive option for those who need reliable mobility.

“It is not a top-of-the-range performance chair, but it does perform very well considering its price point.

“The ability to choose from a variety of sizes and configurations does allow the prescriber to match the clients’ needs closely and ensure the transition to longer use of a mobility product is possible without undue stress.”

Deal or no deal?

Whether you’re thinking of selling your business in five or 10 years, or looking for a quick exit in 2025, here is some essential advice...

Did you know that over 80 per cent of businesses that have been put on the market in the UK are never sold? Maybe you’re thinking of selling your business in five or 10 years, or perhaps you’re looking for a quick exit in 2025. If that is you then this article aims to explore some of the issues that you need to address. If any of these are resonant with your business, then they need to be considered sooner rather than later.

LOW PROFIT OR MINIMAL GROWTH

A business with no growth signals no future, making it unattractive for investors looking to scale up or profit. It can significantly reduce the business’s value and attractiveness to potential buyers.

Try to make sure that your profits are increasing year-on-year and that there is evidence of growth. If your products or services need more differentiation in a crowded market, your business is likely competing on price rather than value. This often becomes a race to the bottom, eroding profitability and longterm viability. There is another way, however, and making your offerings unique is easier than you think.

A business heavily reliant on the founder or lacking a capable leadership

team raises red flags. Buyers look for scalable operations, where a team with complementary skills drives the business forward, reducing dependence on individuals.

It’s important to get the right staff in the right roles. Key roles below the executive level must be filled by experienced leaders capable of executing strategy. Gaps in these areas can signal vulnerability and risk.

A poor company culture leads to high employee turnover and damages your brand. Buyers know that a toxic environment negatively impacts performance and retention. You still have time to build a culture that is appealing and great to work in.

The business is at significant risk if only a few customers generate most of your revenue. Losing a major client post-sale could destroy the buyer’s value. Spread the risk and build your customer base.

Without robust systems, processes, and performance metrics in place, transferring ownership becomes complex and less appealing to potential

“A business with no growth signals no future”

buyers. These are easier to implement than you think. With AI and video, creating and documenting processes is simple.

STEPS TO A SMOOTHER EXIT

Think of selling your business like selling a house. Before listing, you clean, repair, and stage the home to attract buyers. Similarly, addressing any operational inefficiencies will help tidy up financials and ensure the business looks attractive to prospective buyers.

Surrounding yourself with experts, such as a broker, exit consultant, and solicitor, will give you an advantage. Their guidance is crucial in navigating the complexities of the sales process.

Understanding your business’s true worth is crucial. It is based on multiple factors, such as profit, assets, goodwill, and market opportunity. Overvaluation is a common mistake that can deter buyers, while undervaluation can lead to potential profit loss.

Try to work with your broker to develop an effective, confidential marketing plan. Ensure the sale keeps staff, customer, and supplier relationships intact.

Timely responses are critical. Delays in providing requested information can kill deals and frustrate potential buyers.

MAXIMISING SALE VALUE

If you are looking to sell your business you need to highlight its growth potential. For example, you can highlight initiatives already underway, such as product launches or new markets, to demonstrate your business’s growth potential.

Ensure your financial records are upto-date, accurate, and transparent. This will build trust and accelerate the due diligence process.

From the buyer’s perspective, you need to minimise risks by demonstrating strong management, diversified revenue streams, and solid supplier and customer contracts.

AVOID COMMON MISTAKES

Try not to confuse your exit date with your exit strategy. Selling a business can take 9-18 months, but preparing for a successful exit often takes two to four years. Use this time to streamline operations and maximise value.

Buyers expect to see at least three years of clean, organised financials

and well-documented processes. Disorganisation breeds distrust and delays.

At the same time you don’t want to lose focus on the business. Continue running your business effectively during the sale process. A declining performance can quickly scare off buyers.

Over-valuing your business is another mistake. Over 80 per cent of businesses listed for sale don’t sell, often due to unrealistic pricing. You need to conduct a fair market valuation and adjust your expectations accordingly.

Try to also be clear on your reasons for selling. Buyers will ask why you’re selling, so a well-thought-out answer would help.

Good organisation is crucial as being disorganised kills deals. Have contracts, financials, and performance metrics ready in advance.

Put yourself in the buyer’s shoes. Try to proactively address their concerns about risks, future opportunities, and operational stability.

Selling your business is not just

about transferring ownership; it’s about telling a compelling story that resonates with potential buyers. By addressing challenges head-on and preparing thoroughly, you can create a win-win scenario that ensures a smooth transition and maximises your return.

Whether you’re just starting your exit planning or ready to sell, understanding your business’s value is the first step toward a successful sale.

Making a difference

A new showroom in the historic city of Winchester is helping to support people with mobility needs get out and about…

Winchester Mobility, the cathedral city’s first dedicated shop for electric scooters, rollators and recliner chairs, enjoyed its grand opening in September. Among the attendees was the Mayor of Winchester, Russell Gordon-Smith, who came along to officially open the store.

Lee Cogan, Owner and Director of Winchester Mobility, said that it was really special having the mayor come along to visit. Apart from cutting the ribbon, the mayor tested out the rise & recliners, and mobility scooters. “It was lovely having him come,” says Lee.

“The mayor said that he would help spread the word around Winchester, and he was just very positive about the shop being open. He remarked on there being nothing like it in Winchester and was impressed with the showroom.”

The Mayor also commented on the

day: “I’m certain Lee and the team will have a huge impact on the city, their passion to help and support people with mobility needs really stood out.”

Of course, helping people and making a difference was what inspired Lee to set up the business. He says: “It’s a really rewarding job helping to find solutions for people who struggle with their needs.”

Lee, who grew up in Winchester, recognised that with just a Shopmobility store in the city hiring out mobility scooters, there was a gap in the market for a mobility store.

Previously, Lee had been managing a mobility store for over three years in Andover before deciding to set up his own business. He estimates that it took him about a year and a half to find the right premises for needs based on factors such as location, price, parking and customer accessibility.

FINDING NEW PREMISES

The right premises turned out to be the sixth store that Lee looked at. He says. “When I came in and looked at it, I thought that it looked absolutely enormous, although now, with all the stock in it, I thought that it actually looked much smaller so that was a bit of an eye opener! It’s still a good size though.”

“It’s rewarding helping to find solutions for people who struggle with their needs”
A happy customer on his new mobility scooter

The premises, on Easton Lane, is situated on an industrial estate and is just a 10 minutes walk away from the city centre. There are six parking spaces directly outside the main entrance, as well as a few more car park spaces nearby, and with the M3 and A34 close by it is easily accessible for customers driving in from different directions.

The store stocks a variety of products, including mobility scooters, rise & recliner chairs, beds, wheelchairs, rollators, daily living aids and walking sticks. Winchester Mobility has a partnership with Acorn Stairlifts, and Lee plans to put a stairlift in the store at some point soon for customers to have a closer look. The store also has a good stock of second-hand and ex-demonstration mobility scooters, rise & recliner chairs, wheelchairs and rollators.

Lee has been promoting the new business to the local community through a variety of ways, including online via Facebook and with the local press. Local newspapers have been very supportive and there are advertising boards outside the shop. If customers cannot come to him, Lee

can offer home demonstrations.

Having a stall at the Winchester Market on Fridays has been particularly advantageous, says Lee. He comments: “I don’t really sell anything as such. It’s more about just letting everyone know where we are, what we do and how we can help.

“Sometimes, people will come into the shop and say that they saw me on Friday and ask for a home demo and that can lead to a sale.”

LIGHTWEIGHT BESTSELLERS

It’s the lightweight mobility scooters and wheelchairs which sell the best, says Lee, who often finds customers are looking for something portable for when they go out for the day in the city. They particularly want something which can be easily lifted into the boot of the car. He says: “They don’t want to be struggling, lifting a heavy mobility scooter, so a folding wheelchair is often the answer.”

For this reason there are lots of products in the shop that are lightweight. “Some of the bestsellers include the AirFold from Drive, which

is light at 15kg, the Illusion from One Rehab, the Pride MG Folding and the Lux from Electric Mobility. “They are the main ones I like because they are light, with lithium batteries, and pretty easyto-assemble pieces.”

Lee has a good relationship with his main suppliers, who have supported the new business by offering quick delivery and loaning demo products for customers to sample.

Offering an excellent standard of customer service is a priority for the business and Lee has an engineer on-hand who can handle any services and repairs for customers. All brand new products come with a one-year warranty.

Lee might find that he will move to a store nearer the city centre with a bit more parking in the long term but the store he has now is fine for his needs at the moment, he says. For now, he is just happy to be in a satisfying job that is making a difference. “There have been times when I’ve helped someone and they say that it has changed their life, which is brilliant.”

The power of usercentric designs

An innovator in seating, daily living, and pressure care solutions, BES Healthcare is looking ahead to 2025 and showcasing some of its latest products…

Established in 1993 as ‘Better Ergonomic Seating’, BES Healthcare has grown to become a company that offers a broad range of products and services which have led it to become respected in its industry. The specialist in seating, daily living and pressure care solutions has had a busy 2024 as it it sought to meet its key objectives. Tom Smith, Marketing Manager at BES Healthcare, explains more...

DID BES HEALTHCARE HAVE A STRATEGY ABOUT WHAT IT WANTED TO ACHIEVE IN 2024?

“Absolutely. BES Healthcare entered 2024 with a clear strategy centred around our key objectives: introduction

of new product lines offering innovative approaches; introduction of products with improved sustainability credentials; and expansion of our presence across the UK.

“Within the company’s aim to continue to introduce groundbreaking products that address real-world challenges, these included the NEST cushion/mattress range, Symmetric Designs’ back and head supports, Bodypoint’s Dynamic Arm Support, and the EPiC seating system from Stealth.

“These innovations highlight BES Healthcare’s commitment to improving sustainability and outcomes for end users and healthcare providers alike. BES Healthcare also sought to strengthen its presence in the home nations, particularly Scotland.”

WHAT WERE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS FOR YOU?

“There were quite a few. One standout was the successful introduction of the NEST cushion and mattress range to the UK market. This product has been recognised for its innovation

“We have also continued our involvement in the development of International Standards”

The BES team showcasing the EPiC Seating system at PMG 2024

in pressure care, sustainability, and infection prevention, which resulted in its being shortlisted for the prestigious BHTA Sustainability Award 2024.

“Second, the appointment of new team members, including Natalie Birk, to expand our presence in Scotland marked a major milestone in our growth strategy.

“Our continued contribution towards education around best clinical practice was emphasised at key industry events such as PMG and NAEP, and educational roadshows.

“We have also continued our involvement in the development of International Standards through one of our directors, Barend ter Haar. He had been instrumental in the production of BS 8625 which covered the selection, placement, and fixation of belts and harnesses, and this British Standard was relaunched as ISO/TS 16840-15 in April. He also led the group which published the latest ISO wheelchair flammability standard test method in the last year.”

WHAT MAKES THE NEST CUSHION AND MATTRESS SO UNIQUE?

“While providing excellent pressure care properties, polyurethane (PU) foams have various shortcomings. They have a limited life before developing a ‘set’. Once contaminated they are not

“3D thermoplastic spun polymers offer the pressure care envelopment properties of foam but none of the shortcomings”

easy to clean and disinfect and they are relatively heavy to move. At the end of life, they are not readily recyclable and therefore either end up in landfill or incinerated where they can release toxic gases.

“The beauty of 3D thermoplastic spun polymers, of the type used in the NEST cushions and mattresses, is that they can offer the pressure care envelopment properties of foam but none of the shortcomings, but with additional benefits.

“Amongst these, the 3D random loop structure of the polymer web absorbs various of the shear strains under the skin tissues. The open structure allows for heat and water vapour dissipation. The structure is maintained during use and provides a ‘springiness’ which facilitates movement, enabling turning in bed or movement on a cushion, thereby offering further skin health properties and aiding independence.

“From the carers’ point of view, the light weight means that NEST mattresses can be lifted and turned by a single person, providing a major manual handling advantage.”

DO YOU THINK THIS TYPE OF MATERIAL IS A GAME-CHANGER FOR THE PRESSURE CARE INDUSTRY?

“The game-changing aspects of this technology come on the infection prevention and sustainability fronts. Spun polymers are becoming more common.

“The NEST material has the specific benefit that it can be washed at up to sterilisation temperatures without damaging the fibres, which means it can be reused readily between

patients and readily decontaminated. Meanwhile, the polymers have been shown to inhibit bacterial growth.

“At the end of life (estimated to be at least eight years), the NEST core material can be shredded and recycled alongside other recyclable plastics.

“This combination of sustainability and high performance aligns perfectly with BES Healthcare’s commitment to delivering value for both end users and healthcare providers. Our unique ability to combine environmental benefits with clinical efficacy sets us apart, and we are excited to see how the NEST range influences industry standards in the coming years while ticking the boxes in the DHSC’s Design for Life Roadmap.”

WHAT WERE THE KEY APPOINTMENTS THAT BES HEALTHCARE MADE IN 2024?

“Signing distribution agreements with suppliers of exciting new products figure high on our list of ‘new appointments’.

“On the people front, we are delighted that Natalie Birk, who is now leading our efforts to expand BES Healthcare’s presence in Scotland, was able to join us. Natalie brings a wealth of experience to BES Healthcare, having worked as an NHS wheelchair therapist in Scotland, where she supported individuals with complex disabilities.

“Her background as a physiotherapist, combined with her recent master’s degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Strathclyde, equips her with a unique perspective and technical proficiency.

“We have also been working with interns from the University of West England (UWE). Most recently, Onali Pramodya has joined us with her expertise in Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), to increase the traffic to our newly updated website www.beshealthcare.net

“A former UWE intern, Peter Horton, who returned to join our product design and marketing team, was shortlisted for this year’s BHTA Rising Star award.”

The Dynamic Arm Support from Bodypoint

ARE THERE ANY FURTHER AREAS IN WHICH BES HEALTHCARE IS HOPING TO EXPAND?

“When BES Healthcare started 30+ years ago as BES (short for Better Ergonomic Seating) our core market was niche products for the wheelchair services. Over the years we have been heavily invested in primary care markets, broadening from health into social care funded areas as well.

“One of the companies that we’ve been proud to represent in the UK and Ireland is Bodypoint. Their reputation has been built on designing and manufacturing quality wheelchair accessories.

“Their most recent innovation has been their Dynamic Arm Support which they designed as a wheelchair accessory to help place the arm in an anatomically correct position, but also provide movement options. However, the critical aim is to have the upper arm held in the correct position in the shoulder joint to stop dislocation from the effects of gravity pulling on the joint.

“We have been expanding our support of the specialist dealers serving this market”

“As we launched this device in the UK we discovered that a key market was for post-stroke patients. However,

by the time that these patients were issued a wheelchair the painful damage to their shoulder joints had occurred. As a result, we are now working with stroke wards and with static seating manufacturers to make this device available for appropriate early intervention. In arriving into the acute section, we have discovered a broad interest in other products in our portfolio.

“While BES Healthcare’s business has been built over the years while selling directly to public services, we have seen the increased professionalism in the private sector.

“A major driver has been the lengthening waiting lists in the public sector driving individuals to buy direct. To this end we have been expanding our support of the specialist dealers serving this market.”

WHY IS SCOTLAND A FOCUS FOR BES HEALTHCARE?

“Scotland is a key focus for BES Healthcare because of the region’s unique healthcare needs and the opportunity to provide greater local support to both healthcare providers and end users.

“With the appointment of Natalie Birk, we aim to build stronger

relationships with healthcare professionals across Scotland and ensure they have locally provided access to our innovative product range, and technical and educational support.

“When DCS Joncare joined the BES Healthcare stable a few years ago, we inherited our own product ranges, in particular the Breezi range of heightadjustable activity chairs. We have been working on simplifying the design to make it more accessible for export markets, and thence aim to expand in this area.”

HOW IS BES HEALTHCARE ACHIEVING ITS SUSTAINABILITY GOALS?

“BES Healthcare is taking a multifaceted approach to sustainability, incorporating it into every aspect of the business.

“We have implemented a Carbon Reduction Plan that addresses Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, ensuring accountability at every level.

“Upgrades such as LED lighting and exploring renewable energy options, including solar installations, are reducing our energy footprint.

“We work with suppliers who share our commitment to sustainability and are ISO 14001 certified, and we also

operate virtual meetings, a cycle-towork scheme, and using sustainable couriers help minimise transportrelated emissions.

“We have embraced paperless operations and efficient waste management strategies to reduce landfill contributions.

“All these efforts are ongoing, and we remain committed to launching new sustainable initiatives in the future.”

CAN YOU DESCRIBE A COUPLE OF THE SEATING PRODUCTS THAT BES HEALTHCARE PLANS TO BRING TO THE MARKET SOON?

“One exciting upcoming product is an extension to the Breezi range, in the form of the ‘Teeni’, designed specifically for smaller individuals.

“Another is a cutting-edge, innovative seating product, which is aimed to provide calming effects to those with behavioural challenges. While we can’t reveal too much just yet, these products reflect our commitment to innovation and user-centric design.”

WHAT EVENTS WILL BES HEALTHCARE BE SUPPORTING IN 2025?

“In 2025, BES Healthcare will continue its active participation in major industry events. However, the challenge of attending expensive exhibitions is to get a return on the investment. We have found that educational roadshows have given good returns over the years in that the extra time with our clients means that we can go into the depth that our solutions merit, and our clients value the CPD points gained.

“We have a number of roadshows in the works for 2025, the first of these in March, in Ireland and Scotland, and then in June, in England and Wales, with others in the pipeline. These will provide opportunities for visitors to get handson with the new products, such as the Dynamic Arm Support, the EPiC Seating System which applies a whole new approach to back support, and the Free Form seating system which conforms to the whole body shape, to name a few.”

What makes a good trunk support? 3. Measurement to fit

For a trunk support to be effective it needs to be the right size. Here we look at the measures involved for the accurate prescription of anterior and lateral trunk supports.

Manufacturers have traditionally ascribed sizing to their flexible postural support devices (PSDs) with letters (e.g. S, M, L) rather than numbers. However, one manufacturer’s medium (M) is not necessarily the same as the next manufacturer’s. To overcome this challenge, the recently published ISO/TS 16840-151 (the replacement for the older British standard BS 8625) has prescribed a standardised nomenclature for manufacturers to use when showing the size that will be appropriate for an individual client. The annexes to this standard cover a range of flexible postural support devices, but here we will consider just trunk supports. Annex A of the standard summarises the measures of the client, and Annex B the PSD measures to match the client.

Selecting the right size and type of anterior support, and choosing the correct placement (aside from achieving the desired clinical outcome), are critical to the health and safety of the client. Getting this wrong might lead to strangulation at worst, but also harm, such as skeletal deformation (e.g. misalignment of the spine) over time. The devices can either facilitate or impede bodily internal function and external activities, depending on their type and placement – the benefits of different aspects of dynamism were covered in the previous article. Never to be forgotten is that, for safety, a correctly positioned and adjusted pelvic

positioning belt is essential before considering any upper body support.

CLIENT

MEASURES

FOR FLEXIBLE PSDS

There are three types of anterior supports commonly available –shoulder harnesses, chest harnesses (for examples see Figure 1), and circumferential harnesses.

For the shoulder and chest harnesses, the shoulder width should be measured as shown in Figure 2. This width is used to prescribe the size of the support.

In contrast, circumferential supports are the most flexible of the flexible PSDs, and do not involve straps over the shoulders – for examples see Figure 3.

Circumferential supports are used most commonly around the chest,

Figure 1. Examples of a shoulder harness and a chest harness.
Figure 2. Measurement for an anterior trunk support (Fig A.6 from ISO/TS 16840-15 1)

where the rib cage protects the internal organs. Sometimes it will be necessary to support the soft tissues of the upper body, which will involve mounting across the abdomen. Where an abdominal support is used, often this is to provide support, for example, for sagging abdominal muscles, strengthening abdominal muscles and weakened abdominal walls, reducing pain while laughing, avoiding discomfort while coughing, avoiding squeezing or cramping up of muscles, or assisting toning of abdominal muscles.

The circumferential distance needs to be measured with a flexible tape around the torso, from the back support upright on one side to the upright on the other side (Figure 4), at the height where the support is to be applied, to prescribe the appropriate size of support.

MEASURES OF FLEXIBLE PSDS

An anterior trunk support shall be described by the range of shoulder width measures (Figure 2) for which it

is designed. The shoulder width range for which the PSD is suitable becomes the ‘size’ of the PSD. If the selected shoulder width size range were, say, 250 to 290 mm, the PSD size would be 25-29. Further examples are given in Table 1.

The same principle applies to a circumferential chest support, the size of which is derived from the range of chest measures for which it is designed. Examples are given in Table 2.

RIGID SUPPORTS

Most anterior supports are flexible in design to fit around the curves of the torso, but also need to allow a degree of movement for breathing and functional activities (all of which tend to be mostly in a forward direction). Circumferential supports will also supply a degree of lateral support and lateral movement.

Conversely, for stability of the upper body, most lateral and posterior supports are based on rigid structures. Being rigid structural items, primary measures will relate to their respective positions in space and relate to their points of fixation on the seating system or chair. The size of the pads on the supports will be important, but not as critical as the sizing for a flexible support. Back supports will have some aspects of lateral support, but, for now, let’s cover standalone lateral trunk supports. (Describing the measures and positioning of posterior (back) supports are covered in a later article.)

LATERAL TRUNK SUPPORTS

Lateral trunk supports can be prescribed for different purposes. At the more simple level, they provide lateral boundaries to help position the trunk in the midline. The body measure for these will relate to the width of the trunk at the height at which they will be mounted. The support will usually be located alongside the ribcage to avoid interaction with soft tissues, but not too high as to impede arm movement or cause discomfort.

To provide information to the person placing the support onto the seating system or chair, the point at which the centre of the support surface touches the occupant is a point in space that is measured from the ‘zero point’ of the seating system. The zero point is designated as being at the junction of a vertical line down the centre of the surface of the back support with a

Figure 3. Examples of circumferential trunk supports
Figure 4. Measurement points for a circumferential chest support
A.7 from ISO/TS 16840-15 1)

horizontal line along the centre of the surface of the seat cushion (0,0,0s in Figure 5). The height of the PSD will be the height from the zero point to the centre point of the surface of the PSD (Y3). The ‘depth’ will be the distance forward from the zero point (X3), and the width will be the sideways distance from the zero point – a positive value if to the right of the chair and a negative value if to the left.

ADJUSTABLE LATERAL TRUNK SUPPORTS

For a retaining role, the pads are usually mounted parallel with the ‘orthogonal’ axes of the seating system, i.e. with the X, Y, and Z axes. However, when the pads are being used as positioning devices to accommodate or correct scoliotic deformities of the spine, it is critical that the pad

push the rib in the wrong direction and exacerbate the scoliosis. Examples of systems which allow three-dimensional positioning in space of the PSD pad are Symmetric Designs’ Lateral Upper Body Support (LUBS) and Stealth’s Full Surface Contact pad mount (FSC) (Figure 6). A further benefit of the pad of the LUBS is that it can be conformed to the occupant’s body shape around the point of contact.

Guidance as how to measure the required angle of the support in three dimensions is provided in Figures 5 to 7 in the THIIS June 2023 article2 in this series.

CONCLUSION

A full assessment of the client’s physical and functional needs and abilities will dictate what is the most appropriate postural support device for that client. Obtaining the appropriate measures

of a client, and then selecting and correctly positioning the respectively appropriate postural support device(s) is critical for the safety and long-term health of the client.

Trade thoughts

What is your forecast for what 2025 might hold for your firm as well as the industry as a whole?
THIIS asks trade leaders in the sector their thoughts…

“2025 will be a year of evolution for the accessibility industry, with product diversification and customer engagement the two biggest opportunities to embrace.

“Gone are the days when manufacturers are strictly staying in their lane and sticking to their staple products. We’ll be introducing more products from our broader portfolio in 2025 and this brings huge potential with it, including the opportunity to introduce accessibility products to a different customer base, and cement our position as an unrivalled partner for lifts with our trade customers.

“But there’s an opportunity to reach a slightly different customer even without product diversification. Lots of consumer brands are working to change the way ageing is perceived and lessen any stigma associated with accessibility needs. While accessibility products aren’t just for the elderly, this

provides a platform to change how we position our products to try and appeal to those customers at an earlier stage of life.

“The feedback we get from our stairlift customer service team is that customers always say they wish they’d got one sooner. It’s on us, as an industry, to educate people about the products that can help them later in life, before they become a last resort.

“So with a strong proposition, new products and some clever marketing, the world’s your oyster in 2025.” www.handicare-stairlifts.co.uk

This partnership provides an opportunity to review the business and its products as a whole, leveraging our combined expertise to identify new opportunities and deliver even greater value to the UK market.

“As part of this collaboration, we are committed to reviewing and refining our product catalogue, in line with our culture of continuous improvement. A key focus for early 2025 will be the development and delivery of a low-profile bariatric seating range, set for release in the first and second quarters. This initiative reflects our dedication to meeting the growing demand for innovative and reliable solutions in

"Over the last six months we have witnessed an election, a change of Government, far reaching implications of the ongoing Ukrainian conflict, reforms being instigated for the NHS and Social Care, and the change in politics in the USA with President Trump imminently due to arrive at the White House. It would be a wise or foolish person to predict how things will form as governments around Europe and the world are seeing changes that have the potential to de-stabilise business in the global economy.

“However, I have to shine a light on the positivity that I have encountered amongst healthcare professionals when I have met them throughout the UK during the third and fourth quarters of 2024. Having attended seven events in just four months the response to

this important market segment, while maintaining our high standards of quality and performance.

“I predict that the broader industry will face increasing competition in the domestic express shipping and fixedsizing sector, a trend clearly reflected in the growing number of alternative suppliers appearing in publications like THIIS Magazine. Additionally, the most recent UK budget has introduced further challenges for manufacturers, including rising supplier and operational costs. To navigate these pressures, we are focused on optimising efficiencies across our business to mitigate cost increases while continuing to deliver exceptional products and service to our customers.

“Despite these challenges, we remain optimistic about the future. With our roots firmly established in Pentre, South Wales, and

the business and our products has been phenomenal with professionals eager to seek out new innovation and the need for quality becoming the key talking point.

“We all have to accept that competition is expected in our respective areas as we close the chapter on 2024 and open afresh to 2025, but I do believe that for ISKOmed UK, with our own range of German designed and built products, that 2025 is going to be a great year for growth and positivity and of course capturing market share. In the various conversations I have had with similar minded businesses they are also looking at growth with positive predictions for 2025.

2 Wheelchair from Karma Mobility

The Sparrow 2 is a lightweight easy-to-use wheelchair with design registered swing away footrest hangers.

The footrest hanger mechanism allows the footrest to move to the side of the chair without detaching from the frame, making them impossible to lose and a great option for a hire wheelchair. It is also exceptionally light; the self-propel chair weight is just 8.7kg without the rear wheels.
