The British Healthcare Trades Association (BHTA), which represents over 400 companies in the healthcare and assistive technology industry, has published free guidance for businesses regarding lithium battery safety.
Intended to be used as a toolkit for businesses that want to take industryleading approaches to lithium battery safety, the BHTA worked with DG Solutions, a consultant on dangerous goods, to produce the guidance.
Highlights from the toolkit include plug-and-play templates for businesses to use to inform their own lithium battery policy. These include advice regarding disposal processes and practices for end-of-life lithium batteries. It also includes checklists with information on key lithium battery practices, as well as battery safety information that distributors and retailers can share with customers.

Wondering which bathing and toileting are grabbing mobility companies’ attention? This month we asked retailers in the industry to highlight one product that is standing out for them…
“Since our beginnings in 2010, we knew that the Etac Clean would be a popular selling item. This is commode and shower chair in one has won multiple design awards since its release in 1999.
“The Etac Clean was one of the first mobile shower commodes with a rear open seat, a design which has been copied many times since. Its timeless design, build quality and different accessories available to purchase separately makes it consistently one of our best sellers.
“As the population grows increasingly older, the need for smart bathroom aids has never been bigger.
"The Etac Clean has a slim, hygienic and manoeuvrable design, which means that it meets the demands of homecare wetroom environments and

care homes alike.
“The Etac Clean is the only chair on the market with a one-tube frame, meaning there are no weldings or exposed screw heads. These qualities are particularly hygienic as they simplify cleaning and prevent corrosion, something we do witness with other shower chairs.
“The accessories available include an adjustable soft back and various comfort seats, paddings and belts. The Etac Clean is available in different heights, including a height-adjustable model, and as an attendant-propelled or self-propelled model.
“The Etac Clean can also be used as a stand-alone commode with an optional pan and pan holder available, for when it is not able to be wheeled over an existing, accessible toilet.”

“Mobility aids can enhance every aspect of our lives, and we are excited to spotlight the Serenity Toilet Seat from Langham, a simple yet effect aid designed for comfort and convenience.
“The Serenity Toilet Seat makes it easier to lower yourself down and rise from the toilet if you have limited mobility, ensuring you stay independent when using the toilet. Crafted with both durability and user friendliness in mind, the Serenity Toilet Seat features adjustable brackets for the best fit and is easy to install and remove, making it
ideal for travel.
“Hygiene is a top priority, and the Serenity Toilet Seat is easy to clean. The adjustable brackets provide a perfect fit for most standard toilet models, allowing for simple installation and removal, perfect for individuals on the go or those who frequently travel.
“The seat features smooth edges, concealed fittings, and high gloss finish, making it an attractive addition to any bathroom. The Serenity Toilet Seat seamlessly integrates into everyday life while promoting both independence and dignity.”
“Ensuring that casts or dressings on legs or arms remain protected during either showers or baths, is crucial for maintaining a dry and hygienic wound site, which is essential for optimal and swift recovery.
“When a cast gets wet it can develop mould and bacteria, have an unpleasant odour and the cast material can be weakened, potentially compromising its structural integrity.
“It can be frustrating to constantly have to hold your leg out while in the shower or bath, not to mention, it’s often ineffective at keeping your cast dry. There is a choice of configurations for legs and arms for both adults and children.
“The Atlantis Cast protectors are comfortable waterproof cast protectors that simply slip over the patients cast or dressing. They are reusable and guaranteed for three months use, offering peace of mind to carers and patients. The clear design allows users to see their dressing, for checking its condition.
“They are not suitable for use with open or undressed wounds and cannot be used while swimming.”

“We don’t tend to sell many tilt-inspace shower chairs to the general public in our showrooms, but we do supply them to the care sector and the public sector often.
“The Etac Swift Mobil Tilt-2 is a shower commode chair that is easy to manoeuvre and simplify patient transfers as well as transportation to and from the bathroom.
“The Etac Swift range of chairs have a generous maximum user weight of 160kg and can easily be adapted to smaller or larger users with various conditions and needs. The chairs can be adjusted in many ways and have a wide range of accessories to enhance comfort and stability.
"By making a few small adjustments, it can make a big difference to the safety and well-being of the user and
the working conditions for the carer.
“The chair comes with a multiadjustable headrest, a comfortable backrest, adjustable armrests, an ergonomic footrest, adjustable backrest and tilt-in-space function.
“The Etac Swift Mobil Tilt-2 XL models for larger users are available with an additional 12cm between leg rests, and a wider back frame providing an extra 6cm between the armrests. The range comes with a wide choice of accessories that can be added as the end users condition changes.”

“The Bellavita Bath Lift is a robust and reliable mobility aid designed to enhance the bathing experience for users with limited mobility. It offers an innovative and user-friendly solution to safely and comfortably lower and raise users in the bath, significantly reducing the risk of slips and falls.
“Constructed from lightweight materials, it weighs just 9.3 kg. Despite its minimal weight, it boasts a substantial weight capacity of up to 140kg, ensuring it can accommodate a wide range of users. Its sleek design features a modern, slimline profile that seamlessly integrates into any bathroom decor.
“The Bellavita Bath Lift is equipped with a supportive backrest that reclines to a market-leading 50 degrees, allowing users to find the most comfortable bathing position. The seat height can be adjusted from a low 6cm to a high 48cm, facilitating easy transfers in and out of the bath. The
“As a multi-channel retailer that looks to be a ‘solutions provider’ we try to cover as many of the daily living requirements as possible in our portfolio. As a very basic human process this therefore logically includes wash/ dry toilets or bidets.
“Our preferred product in this range is the very dependable Palma Vita from Closomat. It is a full replacement toilet that includes a wash and blow dry facility. There are a number of options to tailor it to the specific requirements of the client including support arms, Big John seat, touch controls, etc.
“The unit can then also be used in conjunction with a mobile shower chair or hoist unit for those not able to self transfer.
“It should not be underestimated how psychologically important it is to preserve the independence of the client to perform this most basic of human functions in private.
“For those with mobility or dexterity issues it can be devastating to have to ask for assistance when this complete toilet system allows independence.”

waterproof, handheld remote control is straightforward to operate, featuring large buttons for ease of use, even with wet or soapy hands.
“It is designed with a sturdy, anti-slip base and a high-quality lithium-ion battery that provides reliable power for multiple lifts between charges. The lift also includes a safety mechanism that prevents it from lowering if there is insufficient power to raise the user back out of the bath.
“The Bellavita Bath Lift combines practicality, safety, and comfort, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a dependable bathing aid. Its thoughtful design and superior functionality help users maintain their independence and enjoy a relaxing bathing experience.”

Based in Grantham, Lincolnshire, with an 80-strong team of staff, family-run insurance firm Mark Bates is this year celebrating 30 successful years in business…
After several successful years in sales Mark Bates established his eponymous insurance business as he sought to create better levels of service in a sector of society where he felt it was most needed, specifically the over-50s and disabled people.
Mark Bates began with offering mobility scooter and powerchair insurance, a policy which is still one of the most popular purchases, but it is now supported by a range of options. Each cover is designed to provide the most comprehensive cover available, giving total peace of mind and support from start to finish.
THIIS chats to Kylie Evans, Head of Mobility at Mark Bates (pictured above left), to find out more…
MARK BATES CELEBRATES ITS 30TH ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR. HOW HAS THE COMPANY MARKED THIS EXCITING MILESTONE?
“The company marked the day with a Champagne reception, games, quizzes, and food. This took place in July and was enjoyed by everyone. As Mark is away with his family over the summer holidays, we have another big celebration when he returns in
September. This will be a family fun day open to staff and their families and will include music, food, and games and will be held out of office hours. At Mark Bates, we are very family orientated and want to celebrate the day as one big team.”

Offering an excellent commission on all completed sales, this truly is the ideal partnership for your business and your customers.
CAN YOU THINK OF AN EXAMPLE WHERE MARK BATES HAS STEPPED UP TO HELP A MOBILITY RETAILER/ CUSTOMER?
“There are many examples of where Mark Bates has gone above and beyond for customers and retailers. One clear example was a tragic care home fire where several of our customers lost their scooters. We worked with a business partner of ours to ensure all equipment was replaced as soon as possible for the affected residents.
“There have also been cases in the past where we have replaced mobility equipment for people that were particularly affected by the loss of their equipment outside of their insurance cover.”
WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON CLAIM TO COME FROM MOBILITY RETAIL CUSTOMERS THAT YOU SEE?
“The most common claim we have for retailers is flooding of premises. The inclement and often unpredictable weather we have been having in the UK has devastated some businesses, and we are pleased that we can support our partners in these situations.
“Another important cover within the Mark Bates retail policy is for shopfronts, and in particular shop windows. Recently, we have received an increased number of calls regarding this following the riots that have taken place around the UK.”
“Insurance is essential for customers for several reasons. Mostly because the cost of a mobility vehicle means they are expensive to replace, and they are typically the key to the customer being independent and able to access the community and services.
“We also live in very litigious times and public areas are very crowded. Liability cover, if a customer hits someone on their scooter is paramount. Our retail partners know that they have a moral obligation to offer insurance, even if that is simply a one-month free
drive away cover.
“Our most popular insurance is the Mobility Scooter & Powerchair Plus policy. This particular insurance includes liability, theft, personal accident cover, roadside recovery, punctures and offers any driver cover too.”
IS MARK BATES’ POSITION ON SUPPORTING SUPPLIERS THAT MANUFACTURE PRODUCTS WITH LITHIUM BATTERIES?
“At Mark Bates, we have analysed the data on lithium batteries and believe that we should not penalise customers or manufacturers who make or buy products powered by lithium batteries. We have very few claims where a battery has overheated or caught fire. The batteries themselves are lighter weight and charge quicker so have an obvious appeal to our customers.”
HOW IMPORTANT IS MARK BATES’ RELATIONSHIP WITH ITS RETAILER PARTNERS?
“Mark Bates has always worked closely with our partners. Many insurance brokers nowadays do not want to allow partners to sell insurance. To do so the retailer would have to be an Appointed Representative (AR) which costs the broker each year due to fees as well as the requirement to have effective
oversight in place. Mark Bates, on the other hand, has a different approach, by having business relationship managers visiting and training retailers. We believe that we can, together, offer great products and great service to our customers.”
“Mark Bates are always looking to expand the network where we feel we can be a benefit to the retailer and their customers. As the largest insurer in the sector, we work with retailers across the UK already.
"If a retailer would like to enquire about how to become a business partner, we would welcome a chat. They can call us on 01476 513789 or email mobility@markbatesltd.com.”

Having outgrown its former retail space, Cumbrian mobility retailer Cowper’s Mobility Centre has been thriving since opening its showroom five years ago…
Penrith-based Cowper's Mobility originally started selling small daily living aids about 16 years ago within a chemist shop on King Street. It was an offshoot of the chemist Joseph Cowper Ltd, which has been in business since 1899.
As well as selling daily living aids the mobility business started supplying specialist equipment on prescription for people being looked after in their
homes but soon it become obvious that floor space in the chemist shop was at a premium. In 2019 the mobility part of the business moved to its present address in Friargate, Penrith, and Cowper's Mobility Centre was born.
The mobility centre has two floors of products with a lift, making the second floor easily accessible to customers, and a workshop. The vast range of products on offer include rise
and recliner chairs, mobility scooters, wheelchairs, rollators, stairlifts, profiling beds, wide-fit slippers, walking sticks/ frames, bath lifts, cushions and a wide range of daily living aids, making it a one-stop shop for customers.
Sarah Caton, a director at Cowper's Mobility Centre, says that offering an
excellent customer service has always been a priority for the business.
She comments: "Meeting and listening to customers allows me to have a greater understanding of their needs and in turn what products work well.
"The range of products available to customers is a bit of a minefield but at Cowper's Mobility Centre, all staff are good listeners, ensuring that customers are given clear advice when choosing the best product for their individual needs."
It is something Sarah knows a bit about having previously worked as a school bursar for nearly 20 years where she came across different people from all walks of life.
As she explains: "Being able to listen to people and be sympathetic to their needs is a vital skill to have when dealing with people with mobility issues. Everyone's situation is different, and all our staff take great pride in helping whenever they can."
The customers who come into the showroom are generally a mixture of people with mild but long-term mobility issues, or they can be people looking for equipment to help relatives. Sarah explains: "Some customers know exactly what they require, for example, a particular incontinence product. However, some are confused and need help choosing particular equipment. We like to spend time with customers to ensure the right choice is taken."
“Everyone’s situation is different and all our staff take great pride in helping whenever they can”
After building up a good reputation for customer care, the showroom has customers coming from all corners of Cumbria, which is a particularly large county, and southern Scotland.
The business has also built a reputation within the local community, and Sarah says that she is often asked to give talks to local groups about mobility equipment and how it can help customers.
She continues: "In the past few months I have had the pleasure of speaking at the local Parkinson's group and MS local network group. That is probably the best part of my job as people are so welcoming and they
Cowper's Mobility Centre has a website and some of the smaller items are available to purchase online, but Sarah explains that for some purchases, such as mobility scooters, wheelchairs and rollators, it is vital to meet the customer in order to fully understand their needs.
She says: "Some customers come into the shop with pre-emptive ideas of what they want, only to realise that perhaps there is a better solution for them with a different product.
"This is something they may not realise when buying online. We also believe most of customers enjoy popping into the shop to see us in person. With some items, we feel it is in the best interests of the customer to see and feel the item. Some of our customers prefer in-person advice."
Cowper's Mobility Centre sees it as vital to be able to offer repair and servicing to its customers. Pete
Pilbeam, Manager at Cowper's Mobility Centre, is experienced and knowledgeable, and he carries out all such work in-house by appointment. Sarah adds: "We source parts from the major manufacturers and although we only sell new scooters, we do try to help customers fix their second-hand scooters where possible."
All of the staff at Cowper's Mobility Centre participated in the Powered Wheelchair and Mobility Scooter (PWMS) retailer training scheme earlier this year. This involved staff spending a day in Newcastle, taking part in a day of practical training and discussion along with others from the mobility retail world.
Sarah said: "We found the PWMS Retailer Training Course useful, and it offered an excellent opportunity to network with like-minded responsible mobility retailers, and realise that we were all offering the same type of excellent advice and care to our

customers."
Support by the Department for Transport (DfT), Driving Mobility, a charity which accredits a network of 'fitness to drive' and mobility equipment assessment centres across the UK, provides this free training scheme for PWMS retailers and hirers (www. drivingmobility.org.uk). The voluntary training aims to improve road safety through an approved and consistent way of providing client assessments to ensure people with mobility difficulties are able to obtain the most appropriate mobility scooters or powerchairs.
Lightweight mobility scooters and powerchairs are among the bestselling
products at Cowper's Mobility Centre.
As Sarah explains: "Although most pavement scooters split down, the battery pack and seat are often too heavy for say a petite lady helping her husband. We have found the Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare Airfold to be a superb, small lightweight powerchair which is easy to manoeuvre and fold down to put into the boot."
Lightweight rollators are also popular with customers, with the Rehasense Space LX doing particularly well.
Cowper's Mobility Centre also sells a wide range of riser/recliner chairs from Recliners, which Sarah says are very popular due to the range of different combinations available.
Although not solely for people with mobility issues, the wide range of
“We found the PWMS Retailer Training Course useful and it offered an excellent opportunity to network”
incontinence products on offer in the showroom are popular with customers. Sarah continues: "We are able to offer practical advice to customers who have different degrees of incontinence. Never an easy subject for some people to talk about, our staff are non-judgmental, patient and kind. I think people would be surprised how common incontinence is for all ages."
Amongst the newer products to come into the showroom, one product which it has recently taken delivery of and been impressed by is the Scooterpac Savvy 8 Plus, says Sarah.
"Penrith being a market town surrounded by small villages with very limited transport, we find this larger mobility scooter offers our customers a viable alternative to getting around with its good range, ground clearance and clear display making it easy to use."
As a small company, Sarah says that it is vital to deal with suppliers that offer reliable products and great customer service when required. "We deal with a wide variety of suppliers who do this and are always looking to work with others," she adds.
As a small retailer it is also beneficial working with suppliers that start their
manufacturer's warranty from the date the item is purchased by their customers rather than when the retailer buys it for their showroom.
Sarah explains: "This is a huge help to small retailers and something we would welcome for all products."
Most of the mobility scooters stocked at Cowper's Mobility Centre run on the normal lead-acid batteries, but some of the smaller powered wheelchairs use a lithium battery. Recognising that lithium battery usage can come with safety risks, Sarah says that the business only purchases equipment, including replacement batteries for their customers, from reputable suppliers, and it would advise people to do the same if they are buying their own batteries.
One of the challenges Cowper's Mobility Centre faces, Sarah says, is how to let people know what range of products are available to help them in their daily lives.
She underlines: "A large percentage of our customers have never given any thought to what is out there and what could help them manage on a
daily basis. Fortunately, we can talk through their needs and show a variety of products which can help maintain their independence and, whilst we now live in a world which has endless social media platforms for advertising, we still find that offering a product catalogue from our suppliers, helps our customers."

That’s why we’ve selected three of our most popular products, ideal for a wide

‘Enabling independence every day’
Two of the key pre-launch questions we ask of any of our potential new products are; how will it stand out in the marketplace, and will it truly offer our customers an edge against their competition? If answers to those questions are positive, and the new product meets our customer demand criteria the NPD project is greenlit.
“We are driven by our dealers’ growth areas and needs. A common theme we were hearing was their desire for a superior rise & recliner; feature rich, readily available – fast, and offered at an attractive price. “
THE ATOM WHEELCHAIR RANGE HAS BEEN UPDATED. CAN YOU SHARE WHAT’S NEW HERE?
“Supply chain improvements announced earlier this year resulted in trade price reductions. We are delighted to announce that we have now introduced quality-of-life improvements across the range.
“The Atom wheelchairs are both incredibly lightweight and safe. The Propel weighs just 9.1kg and the Transit is only 7.5kg. Within the design process we took consideration for use within WAV vehicles where a user is sitting in the wheelchair. Both models have been crash tested and benchmarked to the latest ISO7176-19 standards. Based on partner feedback, we have added push-to-lock attendant brake handles. The Transit now features larger wheels for increased stability.
“Strengthening our “atomically light” range is our versatile and flexible folding powerchair. The Atom Power has instantly been a winner with customers loving its compact and ultra-lightweight design – weighing only 12.1kg.”
SCOOTERPAC HAS ALSO UPGRADED THE INVADER (MK3) MOBILITY SCOOTER. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THIS?
“Since its launch in 2021, the Invader has continued to turn heads up and down the country.
“It has become a popular option for users looking for an off-road vehicle.
"As part of our continuous improvement strategy, we have
upgraded many features. These include front and rear motors offering improved torque, a futuristic digital dashboard with sunshield, adjustable rear shock absorbers and new rear axle, brakes, tyres and wheels. The MK3 is now rolling off the production line.
“The Invader has carved its own fame in agricultural and farming communities. To support this growing trend, we decided to create two variations of the Invader; Standard and Xtreme.
"Both versions are available to purchase by our mobility partners. The Invader Xtreme has been modified and upgraded specifically for off-roading. Public highway use requires DVLA registration, a driving licence, road tax and third-party insurance.”
DOES SCOOTERPAC HAVE A PARTICULAR POLICY TO ENSURE THAT ITS PRODUCTS CONTAINING LITHIUM BATTERIES ARE SAFE?
“Scooterpac has its own policy for products containing lithium batteries. We are currently updating this policy following BHTA’s latest guidance. As soon as this has been finalised it will be published and shared with all our

WHICH EVENTS IS SCOOTERPAC LOOKING FORWARD TO IN THE COMING MONTHS?
“Scooterpac will be attending REHACARE in September where we will be strengthening relationships with our partners. 2024 has all been about strengthening our product range and handling an incredible amount of growth.

The MDA’s Medical Device Alert relating to bed mattresses has recently been extended by NHS National Services Scotland to cover trolley mattresses and community beds.
Some years ago, the MDA (as it was, before it was merged with the MHRA) issued a Medical Device Alert MDA/2010/0021 covering “all types of bed mattresses” to cover the problem that: “If mattress covers are damaged, body or other fluids can pass through and contaminate the inner core. There is the potential for cross-infection if contaminated mattresses remain in use.”
This alert arose because the MDA had received numerous reports of damaged covers and associated interior mattress contamination of the core. Their investigations had revealed that there was a widespread lack of inspection regimes that incorporated frequent checks for external damage or internal contamination.
Mattress covers can become damaged at any time during use or storage, for example from: needle stick; strike-through; damage from sharp objects; abrasion during handling, transport or movement;
or inappropriate cleaning and decontamination procedures. A frequent source of damage to polyurethane (PU) covers is the use of bleach to disinfect covers, since the oxidising actions of the chlorine can quickly compromise the barrier properties of the cover, and where covers aren’t rinsed or dried appropriately this will lead to breakdown in the structure of the PU rendering the cover defective over time.
Once the mattress cover is compromised it no longer forms a barrier and therefore body and other fluids can cross in both directions leading to a risk of cross infection between patients and service users. Even worse: if mattresses with non-removable covers are in use it is impossible to check the level of contamination on the inside.
More recently, concerns have been raised that trolley mattresses were not included in the scope of the MHRA alert, and it was unclear whether community
beds were included. To this end, NHS National Services Scotland has issued a Safety Action Notice (SAN24022) in July this year to supplement MDA/2010/002, to ensure trolley mattresses are included and to clarify that foam mattresses for community beds are also within scope. This SAN also provides additional risk control measures.
The actions specified in the original alert notice have been amplified in the Safety Action Notice as follows:
1. Review procedures to ensure routine pre-use checks for wear and damage are carried out on hospital bed and trolley mattress covers between patients.
2. A system of periodic thorough examinations should be established:
a. Thorough examinations of hospital bed and trolley mattresses should be carried out at a suitable frequency based on a risk assessment which takes account of local usage factors.
b. It is recommended that community bed mattresses should be thoroughly examined between service users as a minimum and periodically during medium to long term use.
3. Thorough examination should include both exterior and interior surfaces:
a. Examine the exterior surface for signs of wear and damage such as rippling, holes, cuts, tears and abrasions.
b. Examine the internal surface and the mattress core for staining or other signs of contamination by body or other fluids.
c. Decontaminate or dispose of mattress covers which show signs of wear and damage that may lead to permeability or which show signs of staining to indicate strikethrough contamination:
• Decontamination of mattress covers should be carried out in accordance with the mattress manufacturer’s instructions for use. In some cases the manufacturer may provide instructions for decontaminating the foam core, in which case the manufacturer’s instructions should be followed.
• Disposal arrangements should follow local agreed processes and national waste policy.
• It is recommended to maintain a stock of replacement mattress covers and foam cores sufficient to ensure that items which fail a pre-use check or thorough examination can be removed from use and replaced without delay.
4. Review bed and trolley mattress specifications to ensure they specify removable covers with light-coloured inner surfaces that highlight staining (exceptions may apply, e.g. some theatre trolley/ table systems). It is recommended that 2-part covers are specified to allow the top and bottom covers to be replaced independently.
5. Consider permanently marking new and replacement mattress cores and covers with the date of first use and a unique identification number for management and audit purposes.”
The original alert also specified: “Arrange for contaminated mattress cores to be either: cleaned and decontaminated in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions; or safely disposed of.”
Cover materials can be decontaminated relatively easily by processing in an appropriate washing machine - but bear in mind that MDR regulations stipulate that medical devices are to be washed in machines which themselves are designated Class I medical devices. If moving onto disinfection, a wash process is needed first, to remove any gross material contamination that might otherwise be protecting the microbial contaminants from being accessed by the disinfecting agent. (Again, the MDR requires that disinfection of a medical device requires a Class IIa (or higher) classification of the disinfecting agent.)
before disinfecting. Again, mattresses which are designated to be medical devices need to be processed through Class I washers or Class IIa disinfection processes. Because it is nearly impossible to follow validated decontamination procedures for foam mattresses, these mattresses will largely require disposal.
A no-longer usable medical device cannot be randomly consigned to a general waste skip (Figure 3) or
disposed of in a domestic bin. The MHRA guidance on the disposal of medical devices4, states that the devices are to be decontaminated before disposal or transfer to a third party, and supplied with a certificate of
However, decontaminating the core material of a foam mattress is not so easy. Because of the size of the air pockets in foam it is not physically easy to wash out contaminants, and some viscoelastic (memory) foams should be protected from getting wetted at all. The same principles for decontamination of covers apply to the mattress cores, namely of washing

decontamination. All items that have been decontaminated must also be identifiable by a label which indicates when it was cleaned and by whom, as it is illegal to transport items by road5 or other routes where there might be a risk of a member of the public coming into contact with a contaminated item, either in transit or at its destination6.
Foam is a widely used material for pressure care management in medical cushions and mattresses due to its excellent pressure redistribution properties, but it does have disadvantages due to its weight, patient microclimate management, contamination challenges, and disposal problems.
A recently available alternative is the spun polyester thermoplastic polymer incorporated into NEST® cushions and mattresses (Figure 4)7. While providing equivalent or better pressure care characteristics of many foams, it’s wide open cell structure allows for better microclimate management around
disinfected in a medically CE-marked machine. The material dries almost immediately, and so the mattress can be put back into circulation very quickly and not be consigned to clinical waste. The NEST® polymer has been shown to have inherent antimicrobial properties as well! The lightweight nature means that it is easy for a single person to handle. Finally, at the end of life the core material is fully recyclable, and thus ticks the sustainability box.

Remembering to say, “Can I ask you where you heard about us?” should be so easy, but it often gets forgotten…
Wasting money on your marketing isn’t great, but not knowing whether you have wasted money on your marketing is worse.
If you have spent money on, for example, 20 different promotional activities in the past six months but you don’t know which of them were costeffective and which weren’t, then you are spending money in the dark, and, ultimately, that can’t be good.
Once you’ve worked out where to advertise and produce an effective campaign, the next challenge is to stay on top of what is working for you and what isn’t.
If you are running a single advertisement online or in print, it will be a lot easier, but that’s unlikely in the longer term.
Drilling down on the results of your promotional campaigns is incredibly important to ensure that the money you spend is always working well for you.
The businesses that really understand where the enquiries and sales are coming from are those set
for strong growth. Armed with that information you are far less likely to make mistakes that cost you by spraying your limited budget around. When you know what works, you can simply do more of the same.
A daily, weekly or monthly report highlighting successes and pinpointing the less effective promotions early is a major tool in the marketing armoury; but it’s not always easy to achieve.
To be sure that you have a handle on the effectiveness of promotions, you need systems in place to capture the information.
That means everyone who is in a position to take the calls, handle email enquiries or deal face-to-face with prospective customers needs to be aware of the importance of what they are being asked to do and given the tools to be able to do it properly.
That can be as simple as a paperbased form or a sophisticated online
• How good are you are tracking where your enquiries are coming from?
• How can you get better at doing that?
• Does your team need to have more information on your promotional activities?
• Where did your last 10 new customers come from?
• What part of your marketing spend is producing the results?
• What are you doing that isn’t working right now?
tool such as Google Analytics to give you more data than you will probably ever need. You can find out most things online, including who is seeing your adverts, when they are seeing them and what actions they are taking.
You’ll be able to see the number of people who click on a link, and, if you are selling online, you’ll have a pretty good idea about the effectiveness by working out the cost of the advert divided by the number of customers you get from it.
For an advertisement you place in the print media, though, it’s different. You need to be able to identify the media that is working best for you, and so, if you are running a campaign with advertising in a few different publications at the same time, you need to make sure that each advert is unique.
For example, you could use a different phone number or email address on each advert. Or use a QR code. A code by the contact details can work too, as long as anyone who will be taking phone calls remembers to ask the question.
And that’s the simple but often overlooked action that can see the whole system fall apart. Remembering to say, “Can I ask you where you heard

about us?” should be so easy, but it often gets forgotten. Consequently, there’s a chance that you can miss just how effective an advert has been and, as a result, stop doing something that is producing really good results.
On many occasions the question about how someone heard about you is asked at the end of the conversation, and that’s one of the reasons it can be missed. One option would be to ask the question at the start of the conversation. That way, there’s far more chance of producing useful data.
Having an enquiry form on a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system or just on paper is the first step in monitoring promotions’ effectiveness.
Of course, you could have the best system in the world but if it doesn’t get used, then it’s useless. Any small business’s biggest battle is achieving an effective enquiry tracking system. In the businesses I’ve been involved in, getting enough accurate information to
make sensible decisions about how to spend money in the future has proved to be a challenge.
If it’s just you in the business, then there is no excuse. But if you have team members performing that role, you need to make sure that they understand how important it is to get as much information from the enquirer as possible.
To do that you need to make it real. Firstly, you need to ensure they know where you are promoting. You need to let them know if you have just placed an advert in a new magazine. They should have the promotional schedule available. Make sure that they know
how much is being spent to generate the enquiries. That certainly makes it real! The more your team knows and understands the strategy the more interest they will have in it and the better the results when tracking the successes and identifying the failures.
If it really is such a struggle to keep on top of recording where your enquiries are coming from then there is another option: to make sure that you know the source of every single sale you make.
Understanding where actual sales come from is more important than knowing where every enquiry comes from if that is too difficult.
