“As a provider in the mobility industry, we at Ability Plus highly recommend the Broadway Porter Chair to other retailers seeking a dependable and versatile seating solution for their customers. “This four-in-one perching stool offers a perfect seating solution. It is versatile, and different options can be adapted to use as four different types.
“The options: without the arms and back, with just the backrest, with just the arms, or with both the arms and the backrest. It is one product with four different options to offer the customer.
“The seat is angled forward to make sitting and getting up easy and allows a perfect resting position. The padded seat and backrest, if used as options, are comfortable and easily wiped down.
“The white powdered steel frame not only looks attractive but also ensures durability. The extending legs made of chrome plated steel add to the stool’s stability and aesthetic appeal.
“Designed for users weighing up to 135kg, this stool is not just functional but also built to last. Its footprint, measuring approximately 600x400, makes it a practical choice for spaces of all sizes.”

“With autumn now in full swing and Christmas just around the corner, we’re looking forward to those cosy nights ahead. Comfort and support are essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and the Onyx Cushion offers just that.
“Designed for all-day use, this cushion provides effective lumbar support, promotes proper posture, and helps reduce pressure points. It’s a practical choice for anyone who spends extended periods seated, whether at a desk or on the sofa.
“One of the great features of the Onyx Cushion is its lightweight and portable design, making it easy to move around or take with you. For individuals with specific health concerns, such as back pain or limited mobility, this cushion can alleviate discomfort and encourage better circulation.
“Maintenance is straightforward, as many designs come with removable, machine-washable covers for easy cleaning.
“As the leaves change and the air turns crisp, it’s a wonderful time to prioritise comfort at home. The Onyx Cushion is a reliable companion for the cosy evenings ahead, offering support and comfort when you need it most.”
“As any typical retailer in this industry will know, customers do not come to you with just one mobility issue.
“They may have one disability, but that will require multiple items of equipment to facilitate some form of normality to daily life. So although we may major in stairlifts and hoists, we will offer other items that form part of the overall ‘solution’.
“Part of this is a range of riser recliner chairs from Primacare. They are solidly built, high quality and durable.
“The range includes a whole range of both comfort and specialist seating. The comfort seating even has some options on two or three-seater sofas to make up a suite.
“Our consistent best seller is the Brecon chair in either single tilt-inspace or twin-motor versions. It has a fast-track or express option in certain colours to enable very rapid delivery to your customer in need.”

“The new Fitzroy swivel rise and recline chair is something a little different and offers an alternative option for customers who are looking for a contemporary, stylish chair but are unwilling to compromise on the traditionally great functionality, movement and mechanisms currently being used within the much-respected British seating manufacturing industry.
“This new chair could sit alongside the more traditional options within your showroom and may just catch the eye of one or two customers. From the retailer’s point of view, you can sell this chair consultatively and extol the virtues of the comfort and postural benefits as well as your more subtle clinical benefits of achieving high leg lift, seat-to-back angle consistency in movement and Trendelenburg positioning if required.
“The Fitzroy has the look, style, and elegance of a modern piece of furniture that will complement any home and taste but has the precision of movement which comes from a very well-balanced and quality mechanism, and its functionality and permutations of movement are just great for the customer.
“It is available to trade in two sizes, three colours and boasts some precision engineering in the mechanics and mechanisms, with its dual-motor tiltin-space mechanism and the frames are sculpted in a sophisticated yet ergonomic style which is extremely comfortable. One of its defining features is the ability to swivel whilst in the natural seated position. This chair is a very stylish option but importantly it is brim full of substance.”
Laura Hays Director of Thistle Help www.thistle help.co.uk
“We have been supplying riser recliner chairs for over 17 years now and have worked with many suppliers over the years. We recently started working with Primacare and now stock their full range of chairs in both of our showrooms. The model that is proving really popular with our customers is the Dream model from their Dream Collection.
“The Dream model comes with a double waterfall lateral back, which provides great postural support for the end-user. We find this style of back is especially popular with females, as the lateral backrest hugs around them giving them great comfort.
“The chair comes in seven different sizes that will suit most people. The chair also comes in two different actions – a single-motor tilt-in-space or a dual-motor tilt-in-space. Most of our customers choose the dual-motor action which allows for individual adjustment of the back angle position but allows the recline motion to operate in a tilt-in-space motion with no change to the seat/back angle during the recline movement. This ensures a comfortable no-shear feeling. The chair comes in a wide choice of fabrics, leathers and specialist waterproof anti-MRSA fabrics.
“Upon delivery of these chairs, when doing our follow-up courtesy calls, our customers always advise us how comfortable the chair is and how delighted they are with the quality of the chair.”
INNOVATION & MANUFACTURING SINCE ‘64 - KYMCO THANKS VALUED MOBILITY DEALERS FOR THEIR PART IN GROWING OUR MOBILITY DIVISION OVER THE LAST 20 YEARS.
Community equipment provider
NRS Healthcare recently unveiled a pioneering walking frame called the Walk Safe, which promises to offer a safer and more stable alternative to front-wheeled walking frames or traditional Zimmer Frames for people with mobility challenges.
THIIS chats to Susan Bevan, Clinical Excellence Technical Lead at NRS Healthcare, who has been leading the development of the walking frame…
WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE AS CLINICAL TECHNICAL LEAD AT NRS HEALTHCARE INVOLVE?
“My role as Clinical Technical Lead involves advising the clinical team on technical matters relating to the provision of rehabilitation equipment, including advising on equipment compliance with medical regulations and writing the training materials for selection, installation and maintenance of this equipment across our business.
“Additionally, I have led the development of the Walk Safe project, from research with our partner, University of Salford (UoS), and then leading the design and development of the finished product with the product development team, and supporting the marketing and promotion of the finished product to our customers.”
WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE PRIOR TO WORKING AT NRS HEALTHCARE?
“I have worked in the rehabilitation and medical products industry since 2000, following a postgraduate degree in Industrial Design Engineering at the Royal College of Art. This has included designing a broad portfolio of specialist seating for Kirton Healthcare
(now part of Direct Healthcare Group), and developing hospital beds for ArjoHuntleigh.
“Prior to my postgraduate studies, I worked as an automotive engineer for Ford Motor Company for 10 years. I am a chartered mechanical engineer by profession.”
CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THE WALK SAFE AND YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH IT?
“The Walk Safe is a revolutionary front-wheeled walking frame. UoS approached me with research it had conducted into the stability of conventional front-wheeled walking frames, where it had observed stability concerns, especially during turning. We partnered with UoS on a twoyear Knowledge Transfer Partnership, co-funded by NRS Healthcare and Innovate UK, to use its research to develop a safer walking frame.
“Following research and testing prototype designs, we developed the Walk Safe for consumer use. This involved designing all the components in-house and testing and certifying the product to relevant standards as a Class I medical device. I led this project in my prior role as NRS Healthcare’s head of new product development (NPD) and continued closely supporting the project in my current role with the support of the NPD team.”
WHY DO YOU THINK THE WALK SAFE IS PIONEERING?
“The Walk Safe is the first walking
frame to offer clinically proven stability [Thies et al, BMC Geriatr. 2023]. It is more than twice as stable as a traditional front-wheeled walking frame during turning. We believe this will reduce the risk of falls amongst walking frame users.
“The Walk Safe features swivelling front wheels with (patented) magnetic bias and unique rear glides with an integral brake, which enables the user to turn and cross thresholds without picking up the frame. This ensures stability at all times and encourages a natural, fluid walking gait. The magnetic biased wheels ensure straight-line stability.
“It also features lower handles that assist a user in sit-to-stand, especially when getting up from a chair without arms. It is height and width adjustable, making it easy to fit a wide range of users, and has been designed to be very durable, allowing the product to be re-issued to multiple users.”
WHAT STAGE ARE YOU AT WITH IT AT THE MOMENT?
“The Walk Safe prototypes have been tested in care homes and by 10 healthcare professionals and 18 participants at the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Further community-based trials are scheduled for this autumn. The product will be available to order from December.”

No matter what you sell or how you sell it, the customer experience comes first, writes Billy Finnie, Operations Manager at Mobility Scotland…
In early 2022, Mobility Scotland opened a state-of-the-art showroom dedicated to stairlifts and homelifts, located just north of Glasgow in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire. The aim for the new 450-square-metre space was to create a ‘centre of excellence’. Billy Finnie, Operations Manager at Mobility Scotland, describes the journey over the last two and a half years…
Since moving into our new home access ‘centre of excellence’, the journey has been fast-paced, fulfilling, and rewarding.
When we launched, we were brim full of optimism, enthusiasm, and passion, with a determination to bring worldclass products coupled with unrivalled customer service to the home access market in Scotland. Looking back, we have achieved this, but the journey has only just begun.
Our showroom is located on the outskirts of Glasgow and is a standalone division within our Mobility Scotland business, which was formed in 2006. The new site serves as a shining beacon of light for all things related to home access products, stairlifts, homelifts, and general mobility solutions, alongside world class service for the Scottish market. It offers a spacious, modern, technologically advanced, and accessible building where prospective customers can
come and try the products before making a considered purchase. It also serves as a dynamic training centre and demonstration hub for our local authority OT partners who make great use of the products and facilities daily. Our team consists of surveyors, engineers, and customer experience consultants who are dedicated to wowing our customers and delivering a service and support proposition based on the principles of ‘right first time, every time’. Our goal is to enable our highly respected customers to live longer, safer, and
“Our marketing messages always lead with a personal assurance of only selling a solution if the product met and fulfilled a genuine need of the customer”
ultimately happier lives in the homes they love.
When we launched the centre our main objective was to shout loud and proud about our service offering and make sure our prospective customers knew we were working with their best interests at heart and to the ethical principles of selling our products appropriately and consultatively.
We champion the BHTA’s Code of Practice, and we all agreed as a team that all our marketing messages would always lead with a personal assurance of only selling a solution if the product met and fulfilled a genuine need of the customer. This has subsequently received tremendous feedback from both our private and commercial customers. It underpins our whole approach to doing business.
As mentioned, the journey has been fast-paced, and, back in 2022, we partnered with roughly 15 major industry manufacturers/suppliers and showcased a significantly high number of products.
We quickly realised we were duplicating many products and sometimes had too many similar options. We have since consolidated from 15 to six key partners and have a much more streamlined range of products. The benefits of fine-tuning the model has enabled us to focus on the best available products from the top manufacturers, which know our business and our people and help us grow and develop, whilst ensuring continuity of products, parts, and
training and development for our team.
Also, when we opened the centre, we offered anytime walk-in access to all visitors and definitely neglected the benefits of appointment slots.
Significantly now, 80 per cent of our daily visitors are appointed, thus maximising our customer’s time and improving their overall experience through a dedicated personalised 1-1 session with a consultant when on site. Our team only sells face to face and consultatively through a customer needs analysis process, which can only be signed off by a senior manager once the product has been deemed the correct solution and meets the customer’s genuine needs.
As we grew our stairlift proposition finding and employing great people and giving them a great place to work became a key focus. Recruitment and retention was a big part of the last 30 months, ensuring we had the very best team of people supporting us on the service, maintenance, and installation of stairlifts and homelifts to enable us to confidently go to market. Crucially, this helped us to meet the growth targets we needed to achieve as well as scale and increase our geographical reach across Scotland.
I’m pleased to confirm we have done both. We have a cracking team of in-house Handicare-trained champions who ensure that safety, precision, and diligence is at the forefront of our approach. We deliver a comprehensive survey, which covers installation, service and support, as well as breakdown and ongoing maintenance across the whole country now, coordinated from our centre of excellence in Kirkintilloch. Handicare is a great example of the benefits we achieved through the consolidation process, working with key partners like them enables us to fit with pride and confidence.
Within our business-to-business channel we have a number of key contracts and made a great decision to partner with an outstanding wellestablished company from Dundee, Caltech. This supports us across the whole country and forms a strategic partnership with us in installing,
servicing and maintaining lifts from the borders to Inverness and everywhere in between. Caltech has been a standout group to work with; its passion, knowledge, ethics and overall professionalism have helped us install many lifts and deliver so much value to our customers.
Another focus area was how to grow the business whilst continually improving the customer experience.
We did this by introducing a customer referral, loyalty and retention programme, which rewards our customers, aids growth and retention, and demonstrates how much their business is valued. It’s a points-based programme that offers rewards, discounts and various other benefits, and I would be very happy to share more intricate details of this with anyone who wants to reach out.
Going forward, Mobility Scotland will thrive on continuous innovation,
“Our goal is to enable our customers to live longer, safer, and ultimately
lives in the homes they love”
prioritise our customers’ needs and experiences, and always create a dynamic, enthusiastic, and passionate environment for our team to work in. We will continue to work with industryleading technologies to enhance safety, and improve mobility and the customer experience. What a journey so far.

The newly rebranded Wilcare Wales has been on a roll this past year, having invested in leading manufacturing technology and launching its new Signature range of rise and recline chairs…
Established in 2001 the Wilcare Group is a UK manufacturer of rise and recline chairs, made by craftsmen and women in Llandow in the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan in Wales.
Supplied through its network of stockists throughout Great Britain and Ireland, its brands encompass the Wilcare traditional range of classic rise and recline chairs and the accentu8 designer range of contemporary recliners and static furniture.
It is one of a few rise recline chair manufacturers that handles every element of the construction of products, from design to wood frame build, cutting of the fabric and foams, sewing the fabric, to upholstering each and every chair. THIIS caught up with Stephen Stock, UK Sales Manager at Wilcare Wales, to find out more…
COULD YOU SHARE A BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY WITH WILCARE WALES?
“Even before officially joining the team, I had a long-standing connection with Wilcare. I’ve known Anthony Kiff, the managing director, for over 30 years. My involvement began back in 2001 when Wilcare was first starting. At the time, I was working for a metal fabrication company that customised mechanisms for Wilcare, so my initial

experience was on a technical level.
“Fast forward several years, and in 2017, Anthony and Paul Howell, our group operations directors, were looking to revamp the sales strategy and expand the Wilcare dealer network. We had a chat, and I officially came on board in October 2017 as Business Development Manager. The goal was to build stronger relationships with our dealers and grow the network organically – something I’ve always believed in throughout my career.
“Having worked in sales across industries, from computers to the automotive sector, I’ve found that the key principle remains the same: being people-focused. This is core to Wilcare’s philosophy, and while it’s a challenge to maintain that personal touch in today’s fast-paced world, it’s what sets us apart.
“Practically speaking, this means we’re always available to support our dealers directly, especially when technical questions or issues arise. No chatbots or call centres here!
Dealers appreciate that personal touch, particularly when dealing with complex products like rise and recline chairs that come with a variety of options.
“I also work closely with Gavin Wilson, who has been with us since
his family business, Boston Designs, became part of Wilcare. We’ve known each other since the early 2000s, and in 2019, I stepped into the role of sales manager, collaborating with Gavin, now our general manager. His technical expertise is invaluable in supporting our growing network of mobility dealers.”
“I’ve spent about 12 years in the healthcare sector, particularly with our family business, Goodlife, which manufactures daily living aids. Before
that, I worked as a manager at Comet, an electrical retailer. So, I had a good mix of experience in both healthcare and retail; this has been incredibly useful in understanding the challenges faced by our mobility dealer partners today.”
ARE THERE ANY STANDOUT PROJECTS AT WILCARE THAT YOU’RE PARTICULARLY PROUD OF?

house. This range has revolutionised our product offering, making it easier for dealers to assess and prescribe the right chair for customers. Our motto for Signature is “easy to buy, easy to sell”, and it’s struck a chord with both new and existing dealers. It’s a significant shift in simplifying the process, which ultimately benefits both the dealer and the customer.
“Though not a specific project, one of our standout achievements has been our unwavering resilience in supporting our dealers, especially during the challenging times of COVID.
“Despite the obstacles, and once the necessary precautions were in place, we maintained seamless operations, fulfilling orders without interruption. This accomplishment is a true testament to the hard work and dedication of our team, as well as our ability to facilitate large-scale supplies from stock. Thanks to these efforts, no dealer was left unsupported during one of the most difficult periods our country has faced.”
“Our bestsellers right now are the products featuring our three-motor mechanism, which gives customers independent control over the leg rest, backrest, and tilt-in-space. It’s all about versatility and customisation in comfort, and users love that. We introduced this about 18 months ago, and it’s now a feature across both our Signature and Multicare (mobile chair) ranges.
“We’ve also introduced a 25-stone lift capacity as a standard feature across our range, which has been another big hit. It means our dealers can cater to a broader customer base, from petite to bariatric, with one standard offering.”
“Our Signature range is the latest addition, and it brings a fresh family look to the classically styled rise and recline sector. We’ve enhanced both the aesthetics and functionality, all with the goal of improving the user experience.
“For instance, we’ve redesigned the
wooden knuckles, making them larger and more ergonomic, and added new flat-top arms along with twin-sided storage pockets. These might seem like small details, but they make a big difference in terms of comfort and usability.”
HAVE YOU NOTICED ANY PARTICULAR TRENDS IN WHAT CUSTOMERS ARE LOOKING FOR IN RISE AND RECLINE FURNITURE?
“Absolutely! Consumers today are much more informed, thanks to the internet. They’re looking for greater control and more options for customisation. That’s why the threemotor mechanism is so popular - it allows for virtually infinite positioning. People want to dial in their comfort, and we’re meeting that demand with our advanced product lineup.”
HAS WILCARE WORKED ON STREAMLINING PRODUCTION PROCESSES?
“Yes, we’ve made significant strides in that area. With the Signature range, we’ve focused on standardising models and using common parts, which helps improve efficiency. We’ve also invested heavily in computer numerical control (CNC) technology, allowing us to design with precision and reduce waste.
“One example of improved design is our built-in seat boxes, which add core stability to the chairs’ mechanisms. This approach allows us to use less wood in the production process, which is great for both efficiency and sustainability.”
SPEAKING OF SUSTAINABILITY, HOW HAS WILCARE ADAPTED ITS PRACTICES TO BE MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY?
“In 2017, we made a big investment in a biomass plant system – around £250,000. This system provides enough energy to make our factory selfsufficient, heating both the plant and our offices. We use waste wood and dust from our wood extraction system to fuel the boiler, which eliminates the need to transport waste, reducing our carbon footprint.
“We also exclusively use FSCcertified timber in our chair production, and we’ve involved all our staff in waste reduction and separation strategies, further improving our environmental credentials.”
HOW DOES WILCARE DISTRIBUTE ITS PRODUCTS ACROSS THE UK?
“We distribute through a network of mobility dealers throughout the UK. One thing we’re particularly proud of is our quick lead times. Our new Express chairs are dispatched the next working day, and even our bespoke, made-tomeasure chairs ship within 20 working days. “It’s part of our commitment to delivering quality at speed, without compromising on craftsmanship.”
HOW DO YOU ENGAGE WITH AND SUPPORT YOUR RETAIL PARTNERS?
“We believe in personal, hands-on support, so we regularly visit our dealers to discuss their needs and
“We
help them with specific customer chair requirements. Over the last five years, we’ve also upgraded and expanded our point-of-sale (POS) materials to help them improve their showroom displays. We’ve introduced a simplified chair specification system too, making their lives easier.”
IS WILCARE LOOKING TO EXPAND ITS DEALER NETWORK? IF SO, WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
“Yes, we’re always open to expanding our network, and we’re particularly keen to hear from dealers in the North East, the West Country, North Midlands, Bedfordshire, and North London. We’re more than happy to hit the road, demonstrate our chairs in
person, and showcase how our POS support and ordering systems work. Interested dealers can get in touch with me at stephen@wilcarewales.co.uk.”
WHAT’S NEXT FOR WILCARE WALES IN THE COMING YEAR?
“Plenty! We’re always looking to recruit skilled craftspeople for the workshop and talented individuals for the sales team.
“We’ve rebranded this year with a fresh, modern look, and it’s been well received by our dealers. We couldn’t be happier with the new branding and will be busy introducing our new Signature range and streamlined ordering process to dealers throughout the UK.
“2024 has been a year of transformation for Wilcare, and we’re
excited to keep that momentum going across new products, production plans, recruitment, and more!”

How we position, move, and support our upper body is critical for good health and optimal functionality.
But what is involved in positioning and movement?
The adjective ‘dynamic’ is applied widely across wheelchair and seating components, but how does this term apply to the occupant of a wheelchair?
From the occupant’s point of view the dynamic element of a seating element, or postural support device, facilitates the occupant’s ability to carry out everyday activities from their chair. Sitting is an activity, and we need to be able to vary our postures to achieve our required outcomes.
To this end, we might wish our seating system to allow movement within a defined zone of control. In other cases we may wish our support devices to help us to regain a starting position. These dynamic postural alteration properties are of particular importance around the trunk since it is this part of the body which will facilitate or impede the greatest number of our seated activities.
To understand the pros and cons of these different ‘dynamic’ situations allowing postural variation, this
article has coined some terms to help differentiate the different aspects.
Importantly, safety has to be a primary concern. Not all movement is good. There are instances where a desired postural adjustment is both protected and facilitated by restricting the movement of other parts of the body. Indeed, by not permitting restricting certain movements, the outcome can be very dangerous and even life-threatening.
In different parts of the world, deaths from strangulation by anterior harnesses have been recorded.
Strangulation can arise because the support is too high and it occludes the airway. This can be because the support has been fitted too high, or the support has been adjusted since fitting and consequently sits too high, or the support has moved out of position since being fitted.
The risk of injury or death due to strangulation is greater when a chest support is used, as compared with a shoulder harness, due to the neck shape integral to the design of the support. To remind users of this risk, a label has been recommended (Figure 1) in the recently published ISO/TS 16840-151: Alternatively, the risk of strangulation can arise because of the misapplication of other postural

support devices. An anterior trunk support should never be used without a properly positioned and adjusted pelvic positioning belt (again see ISO/TS 16840-151). The occupant might be able to slip down in their seat if their pelvic positioning belt is absent or not in use, fixed too loosely, poorly positioned, or malfunctioning.
The occupant collapsing down in the seat, and the airway being occluded by the support can also occur because there is insufficient lateral trunk support such that the occupant collapses to one side; or there is insufficient posterior pelvic or lumbar-thoracic support to maintain an upright posture, so that the occupant collapses down into a kyphotic posture.
The risk of injury or death is increased when the occupant is unable to recognize that something is incorrect about their seating or cannot verbally communicate their distress.
Another risk comes from mechanical compression to the ribcage or diaphragm due to the anterior support
being fitted too tightly, or the occupant sliding underneath the postural support until stopped by their arms and ribcage, placing pressure on the ribcage. A degree of elasticity in the support materials will allow movement of the diaphragm and thus not interfere with respiratory movements of the thorax. Harnesses incorporating such materials are what we might call reactive dynamic devices. However, it is important as to where the reactive elasticity is positioned and directed.
‘Butterfly’ harnesses made from elastic materials like Lycra have been found not to meet the ISO 1684032 performance standard. They have been found to rise up with the chest movements, and reports of strangulation have resulted.
This risk has been removed in alternative chest harness designs such as the Stayflex (Figure 2), where the materials and stitching allow only vertical stretch of the straps over the shoulders, and only lateral stretch in the webbing attaching the lower part of the harness, but no stretch in the central zone. An alternative can be found in the Posigo FLO2 (Figure 3) where the
lower straps have the elasticity to allow the diaphragm full movement. (Both models have solutions for male vs female torsos.)
Depending on the core strength of the trunk, the occupant may be able to move away from their centrally balanced position, but only a limited distance before the effects of gravity become stronger than the individual’s ability to recover their original position.
In this case the occupant might desire a permissive dynamic support which allows postural adaptation, but only to the distance where the ability to recover to an original position can be achieved. The degree of tightening and the elasticity of the upper straps of an anterior harness might be one way of achieving this.
A permissive dynamic support may help to keep the torso within a range of movement. As the occupant tires they may need increased assistance in regaining their ‘neutral’ position.
Elasticity within the device or spring mounts attached, i.e. a responsive dynamic support, can help, but may need individual selection to match that user’s needs. An obvious candidate is an anterior harness where the elasticity in the upper straps helps the occupant back into their posterior support.
An innovative approach is the EPiC seating system, where the back support is mounted with spring-loaded hinges which can be set up to allow the occupant to push back into a more reclined position, and then assists them to return into a more upright position as desired (Figure 4). Another product in this category was the Hip Grip (now discontinued), where a support around the pelvis allowed the occupant
to move their pelvis towards a more anterior pelvic tilt, while rubber springs in the device helped the individual to regain their original posture.
The success of both these latter products was that they were designed to articulate around the body’s natural pivot point of the hip joint (traditional back support recline mechanisms rotate at the junction of the back support mounts and the seat base, which is quite some distance below the position of the hip joint!).
For the EPiC, this provides further benefits of no shearing along the person’s back during the recline. Importantly, any lateral, anterior, or head supports remain in place relative to their alignment with the occupant’s body.
Another family of dynamic systems are those which are designed to absorb the energy dissipated into the seating
and chair components from high tone occupants. These are usually springloaded to return the component to its original position. This may apply to a single component, as seen in the likes of the Stealth’s Tone Deflector (Figure 5), or Symmetric Designs’ Dynamic + addition to their Twin Headrest Hardware (Figure 6).
Alternatively, this may apply to multiple components which allow the back support-seat and the seatleg support angles to open up as the occupant extends, and then springs bring the elements back into their original position as the occupant relaxes.
There are also absorptive support materials which may aid in absorbing the energies of the fatiguing vibrations experienced when propelling a chair over uneven ground. Research has shown, for example, that air-foam cushioning in the seat cushion and back supports absorbs vibrations better than solely air or gel cushioning.
The most active dynamic system is one that reacts to sensors which detect the position of the body and then applies energy to the system to adjust the person’s posture. This can be a response to an elevated pressure being in place for longer than the system’s algorithms indicate that it is safe, and air cells, for example, are respectively deflated and inflated so that the pressures are redistributed elsewhere.
There are other active dynamic systems which sense that the body’s mass has moved offline (maybe as a
consequence of fatigue), and actuators come into play which push against parts of the torso or seat to bring the occupant’s body back into line.
There’s a range of concepts of ‘dynamic’ within upper body management in a seating system: each is important in its own right. Depending on the client’s need the dynamic element may be Reactive, Permissive, Responsive, Absorptive, or Active – or a combination of one or more of these.
They each have impacts on a person’s postural variation, and to different degrees. Part of the specialist’s seating assessment is to ascertain what the client wants to achieve through their day-to-day activities, and which dynamic aids will facilitate this postural variation to meet these requirements, thereby enabling seating as an activity.

Seminar Components are celebrating 50 years of business this year. Established in 1974 as a subcontract component supplier the business evolved through the decades to become a market leader in the design and manufacture of motion seating mechanisms for the healthcare market.
With an inhouse design team, utilising the latest in 3D modelling they are able to design and manufacture new products to meet the needs of customers and end users in an ever changing market. Seminar Components operates from its own 65,000 square foot manufacturing facility with its own press shop, riveting, robotic welding, semi-automated paint plant and assembly lines.
The Manufacturing facility is ISO9001:2015 accredited and is controlled by an end-to-end ERP system that allows full control and traceability of products and manufacturing processes. This level of control also allows the offering of bespoke and unique products that customers require on short lead times and with highest levels of attention to detail and warranties that back up the levels of quality provided.
There is also a support desk that allows customers and end users to source spare parts that may be required for field service to ensure the entire lifetime of the product is supported.
The last 10 years has seen big changes and investment in Seminar. We started exporting products to Europe in 2016 which required additional capacity, this came with the investment of robotic welding centres to achieve the throughput we needed. The biggest of these investments was relocating to our own premises in 2021.
We found a derelict factory near our original home and went about renovating it to a high standard to provide the space we needed for further growth and a modern facility that everyone here could be proud of. As part of the move we introduced a new semiautomated paint plant to ensure we would have capacity
Most recently, during this year, we have also commissioned a brand new 400 tonne press to increase capacity further and ensure we can keep as much manufacturing inhouse as possible. Being in control of our supply chain is important to us, our customers demand it. We use UK manufactured steel to keep our carbon footprint small and can react when markets get busy to ensure our

The system can be shaped exactly as they need to support them in comfort. Optional lateral panels ensure optimal protection of knees and elbows.
The Aqua Liberty base is easily removed and stowed compactly away to allow other members of the household to bathe.

Chilli Bean brings the ability to sit comfortably and correctly supported without the constraint, rigidity, confines of a wheelchair.
Chilli Bean’s innovative vacuum technology means correct postural support and comfort are a given, constantly.
The precise shape of the lightweight, wipeable bean chair can be formed by the carer, at home (subject to training). Once fixed, the contours will hold, without pressure points, for weeks. Correct, stable postural support is achieved, with the security and comfort inherent of being sat in rather than on a chair. Should the user’s requirements change, their carer can quickly and easily reshape without the delay, nor cost, of a re-mould.
Chilli Bean’s design and structure also means it can transmit vibration, enabling sensory stimulation.
