Powerchairs

THE RETAILERS’ CHOICE

Wondering which powerchairs are grabbing mobility companies’ attention? This month we asked retailers in the industry to highlight one product that is standing out for them…

Q50R Carbon Fibre Powerchair by Sunrise Medical

“Manufactured by Sunrise Medical, this ultra-lightweight powerchair is designed for convenience. It weights just 14.5kg and folds down to an incredibly compact size for effortless transport and storage.

“With a tight 800mm turning radius, the Q50R Carbon is perfect for indoor use, allowing users to navigate narrow spaces with ease. The breathable backrest upholstery ensures comfort, while flip-up armrests and a centre-mount footrest provide added flexibility for easy transfers.

“Ideal for travel, the Q50R Carbon offers a 7.4 mile range, extendable to 12.4 miles with an additional battery. Even better, it’s IATAapproved for air travel, making it a perfect companion for holidays.

“Whether for daily use or exploring new destinations, the Q50R Carbon Fibre Powerchair delivers freedom and flexibility like never before.”

ableworld.co.uk

The Navigator from eFOLDi

“Having seen and then ordered eFOLDi’s new powerchair, the Navigator, we were impressed with the improvements on the chair and how its performance against other lightweight travel chairs compares. It has an amazing seven-year battery warranty.

“We liked the outgoing eFOLDI powerchair but we love the Navigator. Still with the easy-to-use integral attendant control it’s even lighter than before yet is more robust and manoeuvrable.

“eFOLDi’s marketing materials and support are always on point and we have had a great relationship with all their reps. We are asked for feedback and feel they take on board what we suggest when designing products. The head office sales and technical support staff always get back quickly and delivery of products and parts is always very quick and efficient. And we get people contacting us or coming in the showroom having seen the product advertised by eFOLDi so leads are driven to us.”

Dash Carbon Pro by Dash Rehab by RHealthcare

“The Dash Carbon Pro is an ultralightweight folding powerchair. Weighing 11.9kg, this carbon fibre powerchair claims to be the lightest of its kind on the market, combining exceptional strength and minimal weight.

“This powerchair delivers durability without compromising on ease of transport with its staggered split motors allowing the chair to fold into a compact size. It is powered by two 150w brushless motors and features an airline-friendly 6.6Ah lithium battery, which remains securely in place while folding and does not need to be removed.

Jazzy Carbon Ultra Lite Powerchair from Pride

“The chair is designed with user comfort and convenience in mind, offering flexible joystick positioning, which can be mounted on either the left or right side. Additionally, an optional attendant bracket is available. The Dash Carbon Pro accommodates a maximum user weight of 136kg and has a top speed of 4mph.

“With a front wheel diameter of 165mm and back wheels measuring 270mm, the Dash Carbon Pro ensures a smooth and stable ride. For added peace of mind, the chair comes with a two-year warranty, reflecting RHealthcare’s commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.”

“We sell many powerchairs in our showrooms, mainly lightweight folding models as customers are wanting to be able to put them in the boot of their car. We have recently started stocking the Jazzy Carbon Ultra Lite from Pride Mobility, and it is proving really popular with our customers.

“As this powerchair is made of carbon fibre, it is ultra-lightweight at only 14.5kg (without the battery). It offers a sleek, modern design that blends style and functionality. It is ideal for use at home or outside for occasional use going out with friends and family.

“Some of the features on this chair are a foldaway footplate and a stretch mesh backrest for lightweight extra comfort. It has a unique LED display, and it folds simply by pulling one lever.

“It takes a maximum user weight of 125kg and has a turning radius of 900mm. This powerchair is one of my favourites, and I can understand why our customers like it too. It allows our customers to stay mobile but also be comfortable at the same time.”

Dash Carbon Pro by Dash Rehab by RHealthcare

“With more and more clients seeking a lightweight option for their mobility products we have spent a number of years looking for the right product to further complement the range of wheelchairs that we currently stock but that also has the same quality and design aspects our clients have come to expect from our product range. The team at RHealthcare have come up with a great product to allow us to do just that.

“The Dash Carbon Pro has an exceptional strength, whilst still giving the user the ability to transport and lift the chair. Despite its light weight, the maximum user weight of 136kg enables us to help our clients that would sometimes not be suitable for this type of product, and along with the comprehensive two-year warranty it gives our client the reliable protection and peace of mind that our aftercare service and in-house workshop teams have become synonymous for.

Karma Ergo Traveller from Karma Mobility

“The chair has some great added features, such as the individual footplates which flip up and fold into the frame for keeping the chair compact and the offset motors (150w brushless). These are both neat features to assist the user when folding and means the chair becomes really tight and compact when storing in a vehicles boot for example. So far this year we have seen a great success with the Dash Carbon Pro.”

“This little gem from Karma Mobility often flies under the radar when it comes to portable, disassemble powerchairs, as it does not conform to some of the newer imports that have emerged in recent years. However, this little beauty should not be underestimated.

“It not only packs a punch in terms of capabilities, but it is also robust, durable, reliable, and extremely manoeuvrable. Moreover, it can be easily disassembled and reassembled without the need for tools, making it convenient for transporting in the back of a car, each section weighing less than 26kg. It's an absolute must for anyone in need of a strong, capable piece of equipment that travels well.

“Its many features are: rear-wheeldrive and the patented S-Ergo Seating system and a compact footprint that is super for tight spaces and shortdistance travel. Couple that to being extremely competitively priced and you have got a great option to showcase to your customer base.

“And importantly, the engine room behind this product and other innovative, market-leading, quality offerings is the Karma Mobility team. The exceptional customer care, service and support consistently delivered and led by Mark Duffield foster a strong supplier-dealer partnership.”

Permobil M3 Corpus from Permobil

“One of the most advanced powerchairs available is the Permobil M3 Corpus. Built with precision engineering and innovative features, the M3 Corpus offers an exceptional blend of manoeuvrability, support, and durability, making it a top choice for those seeking independence and confidence in their daily activities. It is also available on the Motability scheme, making it more accessible for those who qualify.

“The standout feature of the Permobil M3 Corpus is its mid-wheeldrive system, which provides outstanding stability and control, even on uneven terrain. This ensures a smooth and predictable ride, allowing users to navigate both indoor and outdoor environments with ease. Its ActiveReach and ActiveHeight functions allow the seat to tilt forward and elevate, providing greater accessibility to high surfaces and improved positioning for transfers.

“The adjustable Corpus seating system includes ergonomic cushions, an adjustable backrest, and a tilt-in-space function to ensure users remain comfortable, even during prolonged use. The power recline and elevating leg rests further enhance posture and pressure relief, reducing strain and promoting better positioning throughout the day.

“What truly sets the M3 Corpus apart is its advanced drive performance and customisation options. Users can personalise the chair’s controls, seat positioning, and accessories to match their individual needs. With a robust design, powerful motors, and long-lasting battery life, the M3 offers both reliability and long-distance performance.”

Going above and beyond

Still going strong after 22 years, the husband and wife team behind Wiltshire-based Mobility Works has always strived to offer the best customer service around…

Mobility Works is a mobility retailer in Westbury, Wiltshire where its comprehensive product range includes mobility scooters, wheelchairs, rise & recline beds and chairs, walking aids and toileting aids, among other products. The staff here specialise in prescriptive products such as powerchairs and active wheelchairs.

Husband and wife team Andy and Vicky Rush established Mobility Works in Westbury in 2003.

Before this point Andy had been working within the mobility industry, and the couple noticed that there was a lack of mobility shops in their area.

They initially established the business with a shop on the high street with a separate workshop located on a

local trading estate. Over the years they then relocated the business to much larger premises on West Wilts Trading Estate, which enabled them to have the workshop and showroom in the same building.

The trading estate is situated one mile from Westbury town centre and is the largest of the town’s industrial estates.

“We have one of the largest service centres in the southwest and pride ourselves on our back-up service,” says Vicky.

Mobility Works can assess, provide a quote, repair and modify most types of mobility equipment on site from mobility scooters and powerchairs to more specialist equipment.

The showroom has excellent

accessibility with a large car park and easy access into its premises for customers with limited mobility. The car park also offers an ideal space for customers to sample some of the products.

EXPERT KNOWLEDGE

Customer satisfaction is a high priority for Vicky and Andy, and they believe

“We have one of the largest service centres in the south west”
Mobility Works provides a local delivery service

the key to their business success so far has been offering that essential faceto-face service.

Vicky comments: “We don’t sell on the internet as we feel that our customers need to see and try before they purchase anything. The products they are buying are an investment in making their live as easy and proactive as they can.”

She continues: “Andy and myself have attended many manufacturers’ courses and launches over the years

“Getting that customer into a chair that suits their needs and abilities is a great feeling”

to gain our experience and knowledge of the mobility/disability industry, which has been key to supplying active/prescriptive wheelchairs and powerchairs as well as bespoke rise & recline chairs. With our knowledge of seating and pressure care we have been able to help our customers purchase the right products for their needs.”

Vicky remarks that she personally loves the active user wheelchair side of things. “Getting that customer into a chair that suits their needs is a great feeling, and personalising the right chair to their personality is key.”

Mobility Works is very proud of its backup service and making sure that its customers have peace of mind with the products they have purchased. The retailer has engineers on the road and also has its workshop on hand for annual servicing and repairs.

The retailer can supply and fit batteries for powerchairs and mobility scooters, and it can provide and fit tyres, tubes or solid tyres for peace of mind. It can also test batteries and provide quotes for insurance companies for repairs after an accident. Bestsellers at the showroom include Kymco mobility scooters and the Sunrise Medical Quickie Nitrum active wheelchair. It’s important to Vicky and Andy that their suppliers, which also include Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare, Electric Mobility, Handicare, Ottobock, RHealthcare and others, offer their full support and backup that way so that they can make sure that is carried on to their customers.

of mouth, Vicky says, with many of those who have enjoyed a good service passing on their recommendations to friends and family. “We even have customers who have been referred to us by other customers in car parks,” says Vicky.

As well as supplying mobility products to the general public, Mobility Works supplies to the NHS, social services, local businesses and

charities. Mobility Works is well known in the local community, and it looks after many local care homes with their servicing needs. In addition, it has a good relationship with its local independent living centre, in which it has demonstrated many of its products.

It also looks after the local wellknown tourist attraction, Longleat Safari & Adventure Park, which is based in Warminster, where it supplies and services the park with wheelchairs to loan out to its many visitors.

Vicky says: “We are a friendly company that goes above and beyond to make sure our customers get the right product for them. We also have a good rapport with our suppliers.”

Over the years Mobility Works has had the pleasure to sponsor the local Westbury Celtic’s adult football team, with new team kits, and it has also sponsored the Westbury Rugby Football Club teams.

Reflecting on the last few years, Vicky notes: “There have been many challenges over the years, especially COVID-19 and now with the new government, I think it has been a tough time for everyone in the industry, but you just have to get out there and prove that you are the best around, by going above and beyond. We pride ourselves on our back-up service.”

One of the leading players in the specialist shoe sector, Sandpiper Shoes provides a a wide range of premium, extra-wide shoes, boots and slippers designed for end-users in search of enhanced support and comfort. Edd Hartley, Head of Marketing, discusses how the brand has evolved…

SANDPIPER SHOES WAS ACQUIRED BY OAKLEY HEALTHCARE IN 2019. CAN YOU DESCRIBE IN DETAIL HOW THE BRAND HAS EVOLVED OVER THE LAST SIX YEARS?

“One of the initial priorities when taking over the brand was to improve the

in-stock service and ensure stockists could more heavily rely on our bestselling styles and colours being in stock when their customers need them. Largely, this has been achieved which has given our stockists more confidence when ordering from us.

“Soon after the acquisition of the brand the Covid pandemic of 2020 caused us many challenges (as with everyone in the industry) and lead to us fast-track one of the initiatives we had in the pipeline with the introduction of our drop-ship service for stockists.

“This allowed stockists to take footwear orders via their own websites and have our warehouse to direct-ship the orders direct to the customer. This was a vital service when physical retail

stores were closed or locked down, but something that many of our stockists still take full advantage of to this day.

“More recently our distribution director, Carol Stanton, has been introducing more modern styles to the brand, such as the Bella Ladies Extra Wide, and this work is ongoing.”

“We are working on increasing the number of casual styles in our range”

WHO ARE THE CURRENT DIRECTORS OF THE FIRM AND WHAT IS THEIR FOCUS AT PRESENT?

“Phil Stanton, Director, looks at the big-picture overview of the Sandpiper brand and how it integrates into the wider Oakley Healthcare Business.

“His daughter, Carol Stanton, focuses on working with our factories to bring a selection of more modern styles to the brand and help give the brand a more modern look.

“The brand is always looking to bring new stockists onboard and improve the overall stockist network for both customers and the brand into the future.”

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT ANY OF THE NEWEST PRODUCTS THAT HAVE BEEN INTRODUCED RECENTLY?

“The Bella Ladies Extra Wide is a 4E-5E adjustable summer shoe, which was introduced 18 months ago. This style uses a much more modern-looking sole unit and with a much more modern upper style, making it appeal to a younger demographic.

Stanton, Distribution-Director

“The Sam Unisex Stretch Slipper is another recent addition to our range, replacing previous styles Susie (for ladies) and Silas (for men). This slipper features an elastane forepart allowing it to accommodate even the most extreme bunions or hammertoes without painful rubbing or abrasions. This is the first unisex style we have ever had in our range, and, therefore, it is currently the only style available from size 3 up to size 13.

“Finally, this year has seen the introduction of an increased number of colours in our Extra Wide FeatherTop Cotton Socks range, now available in eight different colour options including green, wine and white.”

WITH THE WARMER MONTHS APPROACHING WHAT PRODUCT DO YOU THINK WILL PROVE PARTICULARLY POPULAR WITH CUSTOMERS?

“The Cheryl Ladies Ultra Wide Sandal is a consistent bestseller, as it is lightweight, with good ankle support and long straps for maximum adjustment. It’s great for swollen feet and ankles or a high instep.

“For men, the Percy/Tully Men’s

Extra Wide Deck Shoes are extra wide fitting men’s deck shoes available with lace-up (Percy) and touch fastening (Tully) and are popular summer styles for men.”

HOW ARE YOU PROMOTING THE NEW SPRING/SUMMER RANGE?

“Our most recent Autumn/Winter 2024 range featured a brand-new A5 format and a complete redesign from previous versions. This new look will continue in our next brochure with our new brochure for the Spring/Summer 2025 collection available from the first week of March.

“We are also working hard in the background to redesign our website to make it easier to use, faster and more

reliable, and these improvements will also feature on a brand-new online trade portal, scheduled to go live this summer.”

WHAT TRENDS HAVE YOU NOTICED IN WHAT CONSUMERS ARE WANTING FROM ACCESSIBLE FOOTWEAR THESE DAYS?

“One of the most popular customer requests we get is for more casual shoe styles or more colour options. Customer feedback is always important, and we are currently working on increasing the number of casual styles in our range to include a slip-on and more modern trainer-type styles to satisfy customer requests.

“As always, there is a fine line for us to walk to walk as an extra-wide footwear brand balancing customer requests and fashion trends with the realities of creating practical and accessible footwear for the mobility market. Hopefully, we manage to balance these requirements about right, but there are always areas for improvement!”

HOW DOES SANDPIPER SHOES MEET ITS SUSTAINABILITY GOALS?

“Naturally, we care a lot about our planet and do our best to protect the environment. We take care to reduce,

reuse and recycle, reducing waste as much as possible.

“We are also working with our factories to help reduce their environmental impact. Our main factory in Portugal now produces 85 per cent of its energy from solar panels installed on site.”

IS SANDPIPER SHOES LOOKING TO EXPAND ITS PARTNER NETWORK IN THE UK?

“Sandpiper Shoes is always looking for new committed partners to act as sales outlets in the UK. Whether this is to plug gaps in our current stockist network or just to offer additional locations to allow our nationwide customer base a local outlet where they can go to purchase their footwear.

“As a Sandpiper stockist retailers can expect to enjoy healthy margins with free shipping on all footwear orders as well as free brochures point of sale materials. We can provide assistance setting up a Sandpiper footwear display and offer advice on what to stock, current bestsellers etc. There is a telephone helpline to place orders or for advice. Retailers can also log into the Sandpiper Online Trade Portal to place orders 24/7.

“Any retailers interested in becoming a stockist can call 01295 277377 or email carol@sandpipershoes.co.uk.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR SANDPIPER SHOES FOR 2025?

“In terms of footwear, we have work ongoing to develop and introduce some more modern styles to our range, and, hopefully, these will reach fruition later in 2025.

“In the more immediate future Sandpiper is partnering with Dutch company Vitility (www.vitility.com) to bring its Folding 4-wheeled Rollator and award-winning Vitility ID grab rails to the UK mobility market. These will be available wholesale directly from Sandpiper.

“This relationship will be launched at Naidex on Stand C114 in Hall 20 where examples of the innovative rollators and grab rails will be available to try.”

What makes a good trunk support?

5. Back support prescription

Within a seating system, the primary support surfaces are the seat cushion and back support. In this article we discuss the relevant measures of the occupant needed to prescribe the most appropriate back support.

Selecting the correct back support dimensions, and prescribing the correct placement of the back support, are critical to the wheelchair occupant’s functionality. In Part 4 of this series, we addressed the core measures of a back support itself as they relate to the dimensions of the occupant: these go well beyond the normal back support sizing dimension used which relate to the size of the wheelchair. In this article we address the measures of the occupant which match up with the back support measures but also reflect on the placement of the back support to give support to relevant parts of the upper body.

BACK SUPPORT HEIGHT AND LENGTH

As a starting point for managing the upper body, we need to make sure that the lower body is positioned correctly. Are the feet far enough back so that the upper part of the lower legs are not pulling on the hamstrings to pull the pelvis into posterior tilt? Are the thighs and pelvis stabilised and positioning aids such as a pre-ischial ridge in the cushion and correctly placed pelvic positioning belts in place? (For advice on these aspects see other articles in the Let’s Get It Clear series.)

Part of our pelvic positioning aims is to manage the degree to which the pelvis can rotate in the backward/

forward direction. Some degree of pelvic posterior tilt is desirable for comfort and relaxation, but the more the tilt the more likelihood there is of kyphotic compensation in the spine, and with time this amount of compensation can become fixed. To control the degree to which the pelvis can rotate backwards a ‘block’ behind the PSISs at the top of the pelvis is an ideal tool. This is where the bottom of the back support can come into play if positioned at the level of the PSISs.

From here, we have a starting point for calculating the required length (vertical dimension) of the back support, and to do this, we need to work out the required height. (As a reminder, the length is the distance from the top to bottom of the back support. It does not have a height until it is placed on the chair, when the distance from the top of the back support can be measured to a reference point – usually the top of the seat cushion.) Most back supports that are prescribed are longer than they should be for the purpose of supporting the spine posteriorly (Fig. 1). Any of the back support that goes above the

highest posterior curvature of the spine is not supporting the back but just adding weight to the chair. Importantly, this extra length, and therefore height, can also impede the occupant’s upper body movements.

We have twelve thoracic vertebrae numbered T1 to T12 from the top. Anything in the T3 to T8 zone will impede movement of the shoulder blades, the scapulae. For the average person the top of the back support probably does not need to go any higher than being level with T7: this then gives us a typical length needed for the back support to cover the distance from the PSIS to T7, of around 33 cm (Fig. 2).

IS THERE A NEED FOR THIS EXTRA HEIGHT?

So why do we prescribe these longer back supports? The first reason might be the advice that any anterior supports need to be attached horizontally across the top of the

shoulders. This can, however, be achieved with a lower height back support by means of items such as Bodypoint’s Strap Guides (Fig. 3), or Symmetric Designs’ Strapparatus (Fig. 4).

A second reason might be the need for a head support, since this is usually attached via a mount on the back support. By choosing one of the modular mounting systems available on the market from the likes of Symmetric Designs (Fig. 4) or Stealth Products (Fig. 5), it should be possible to mount the head support on a shorter back support. A third reason is that the wheelchair is going to be used in a motor vehicle with the occupant in the chair. In this case the chair needs to be crashworthy, as well as its seating system. The current crash tests in

ISO 7176-192 for wheelchairs and ISO 16840-43 for seating systems originated from a philosophy that concentrated more on protecting other occupants in the vehicle and less on the wheelchair occupant’s needs.

They were also developed in the days before the current ranges of aftermarket ‘accessories’ from independent manufacturers were available. The result is that the current test set-ups tend to give a crashworthy certificate to a basic chair without accessories in place, unless they are built into the chair in the first place. They do not cover for an after-market head support on a short back support as being a viable means to control upper body “excursions” during the test procedure, for example.

The ISO standards working groups have now started to address this, but currently there are no prescribed crash tests for back supports, head supports, etc. on their own. The end result is that the prescriber needs to carry out an individual risk assessment for each client’s situation and needs and cannot fall back on there being a crashworthiness certificate.

BACK SUPPORT WIDTH

Figure 6 presents various relevant measures of the back support cushion for an individual. For pure posterior back support, dimension 21 (planar width) covers the width needed for a planar posterior support on its own, and would cover the width of contact of the back with a flat board.

However, most people prefer a degree of lateral support as well. The internal width (dimension 26) provides the maximum width of the torso with the lateral elements included, usually measured around the T11/T12 area of the trunk. Depth (dimension 28) gives a measure to which the lateral support wraps around the trunk: the greater the depth, the more support but the less degree of freedom. Further lateral support can be provided by integrated lateral supports (dimensions 22-24) or by externally mounted lateral supports on one or both sides.

These back support cushion measures will then relate back to the back support support structure (BSSS), as summarised in Part 4 of this series. The BSSS external measures will usually be less than the cushion measures to allow some overlap of the cushion padding to stop the support edges harming the occupant.

The major implication from the width measures will be on how far back the back support can be mounted before it has interference from the back canes on the wheelchair itself. Some chairs and some back supports offer central mounting options, and then the limit comes from how far back these mounts will allow the back support to be mounted. For a manually propelled chair, the further back the back support is mounted, the more access there will be to the wheel rims. However, this is countered by the risks of moving the centre of gravity of the system too far back for safety.

BACK SUPPORT ANGLE

There is much debate currently about the benefits versus the challenges of tilt and recline in seating systems. This will be addressed in more detail in Part 6 in this series. In brief, if the bottom of the back support is placed at the PSISs, it will need to be reclined from the vertical to accommodate the kyphotic curvature around the thoracic vertebrae and possibly the scapulae –otherwise the occupant’s upper body will be pushed too far forward, and they will need to accommodate this position with cervical extension at the neck to be able to see what they are doing. For those with greater degrees of kyphosis, simply by setting up the back support with an increased angle of recline can reduce the amount of hyperextension required at the neck.
