Retailers engage with PWMS training in Leeds

The William Merritt Disabled Living Centre in Leeds recently successfully hosted the latest Powered Wheelchair and Mobility Scooter (PWMS) Retailer Training course.

The PWMS course, accredited by Driving Mobility, is free to attend and aims to provide safer roads for all by ensuring retailers are trained to carry out appropriate client assessments. The training means that customers have the confidence that their needs have been carefully assessed to ensure they can use their mobility equipment safely.

Rachel Hirst, Occupational Therapist at the William Merritt Centre, led the latest session and was delighted to welcome a high number of retailers who all engaged positively with the

New wireless riser recliner with 360-degree swivel

Specialist chair and bed supplier Oak Tree Mobility has launched the Serenity, a wireless riser recliner with a 360-degree swivel base.

The Serenity offers rise and recline functionality with six built-in buttons that control the backrest and footrest.

A 360-degree swivelling base enables “seamless” rotation with a choice of sleek bases available. The swivel base locks when the motor is in use, and the fixed armrests prevent pinching while in motion, for additional safety.

The Serenity comes with a rechargeable battery, so it can be placed anywhere in the house without wires trailing along the floor. Its battery supports 80-100 cycles and takes eight hours to recharge from flat.

Rising to new levels

Global accessibility manufacturer Handicare has announced the launch of the Savaria Multilift, an unenclosed vertical platform lift designed to provide seamless wheelchair access for two stops in residential and commercial settings.

Already a popular choice across North America, the Savaria Multilift is a compact, space-saving solution that delivers reliable performance, even in tough climate conditions. Its self-contained drive system is neatly housed within the lift tower, reducing the need for extensive building work. Many units can be installed within a single day — minimising disruption on-site and keeping projects on track.

The Savaria Multilift is operated with simple ‘hold-to-run’ controls. It has a number of built-in safety features including an automatic access ramp to provide ease of entry and exit at the lower landing, and an automatic locking landing gate. The operating panel also includes a diagnostic display to indicate the status of the lift.

It’s got all surfaces covered

Mobility solutions provider Sunrise Medical has launched a new mobility scooter with a design set to challenge perceptions of mobility aids.

The new Sterling S800 by Scoozy features four large 18inch wheels, significantly larger than those on a typical mobility scooter, providing enhanced grip on all surfaces.

The 31 miles battery range on the S800 by Scoozy allows users to travel further without worrying about recharging. With a top speed of 8mph, the S800 by Scoozy can breeze through any urban or rural journey while maintaining complete control and safety.

For optimal comfort, the S800 by Scoozy features an adjustable, ergonomically shaped cushioned seat with a backrest, as well as a large, open footwell. The adaptive suspension system effectively absorbs the shocks of city streets and rugged paths.

The S800 by Scoozy’s design also includes the addition of a familiar bicycle-style handlebar, equipped with intuitive controls.

The thumb throttle, handoperated brakes, and multiadjustable handlebars ensure complete control while minimising strain on the hand’s and back.

THE RETAILERS’ CHOICE Mobility scooters

Wondering which mobility scooters are grabbing mobility companies’ attention? This month we asked retailers in the industry to highlight one product that is standing out for them…

ATTO Sport by Movinglife

“At Lifestyle & Mobility, it’s out with the old, in with the new! There’s only so much room for a three-wheel mobility scooter. The ATTO Sport by movinglife has already outsold all other three-wheel scooters in a similar class. I say similar class for a reason, because the ATTO is in a league of its own. They have innovated more than any other three-wheeled scooter.

“Years have gone by where threewheeled scooters have been on the decline. That has all changed with the ATTO. We think that the ATTO Sport proves a lot of people wrong. And, considering our customers’ reactions to this mobility scooter, they couldn’t be happier!

“Poorly designed three-wheel mobility scooters with uncomfortable hard seats are becoming rarer. However, Lifestyle & Mobility have noticed a real appetite for premiumquality three-wheelers that are backed up with multiple lifestyle accessories

“The ATTO Sport is absolutely a premium three-wheeler. The style is unique and makes it very visually appealing. Obviously though, product looks may draw customers in, but performance is key to making the sale, and it doesn't disappoint.

“The ATTO Sport really reflects how three-wheel scooters can change the market. For example, three-wheel

scooters still suffer a bit with that old image of being unsteady. The ATTO Sport is perfectly weighted.

"And, whilst this is a lightweight product, it has so many options. You could have two ATTO Sports which are totally different. That could be different seating set-ups, different storage capabilities, add-ons for air travel, or much more!

“We are confident that the potential is there for major sales growth with the ATTO Sport. What helps this confidence is the relationship Lifestyle & Mobility have built with movinglife.

“Movinglife have been so responsive

to us and so supportive in providing leads. They really are a model example of how a manufacturer should work with a retailer. We look forward to our continuing joint success!”

Mirage by One Rehab

“One of the most innovative and user-friendly mobility scooters available is the Mirage from One Rehab, a revolutionary solution that combines a lightweight aluminium frame, effortless folding mechanism, and exceptional stability for a convenient and stress-free mobility experience. Designed for users who need a compact yet reliable scooter, the Mirage stands out with its fast-folding technology and travel-friendly design.

“A key highlight of the Mirage is its exceptionally lightweight frame, with a total weight of just over 14kg, including the folded seat. This makes it one of the most manageable scooters for lifting into and out of a car boot, ideal for frequent travellers or those with limited storage space. The fast and easy folding system allows the scooter to be folded or unfolded in approximately 30 seconds, ensuring minimal effort and maximum convenience.

“The Mirage prioritises comfort with a wide and spacious seat, featuring a supportive cushioned backrest and adjustable armrests for extra security and comfort. The adjustable tiller, with forward, backward, and height adjustment, enables users to find their ideal steering position.

“Another standout feature is its lightweight lithium battery, available in 10Ah or 20Ah options. The dual charging ports allow users to charge either via the battery box or the tiller charging port, offering flexibility and ease of use. Additionally, the large-capacity basket provides practical storage for essentials, with a design that allows for quick and easy fitting or removal.

“For those looking for a highly portable, easy-to-fold, and exceptionally lightweight scooter, the Mirage from One Rehab is an outstanding choice. Its combination of effortless transportability, comfort, and user-friendly features makes it an excellent investment for maintaining mobility and independence.”

Go Go Elite Traveller Sport by Pride Mobility

“Mobility scooters with lithium batteries are becoming more and more popular with customers due to the weight of them for lifting. However, a scooter that is still proving really popular in our showrooms is the Pride Go Go Elite Traveller Sport.

“The Go Go Elite Traveller Sport meets the needs of end users that require a robust solid powerful scooter but also gives them the option to break it up to put in the boot of their car. This scooter comes with two 20Ah AGM batteries giving the user 8-12 miles range. It also takes a higher user weight of 147kg.

“This scooter is so robust that we made the decision a few years ago to use these scooters for our hire fleet due to their reliability. Over the spring/ summer period, we hire mobility equipment at a local caravan site that has a great deal of steep hills. This scooter allows the customer to navigate the park with ease and give them confidence to get around without the scooter letting them down.

“It is available in red or blue and comes with front and rear LED lights. Another great feature of this scooter is the extra two inches of space for added leg room. It would be ideal for someone who is taller but still needs a scooter to go in the boot of their car.

“We love this scooter at Thistle Help, and we will continue to promote it in our showrooms, knowing if a customer purchases one, they will be delighted with their choice of scooter.”

When and why would you want to upgrade you battery to the Supreme range. The answer is simple, you just need a more. This battery is suited for someone who previously had repeated issues previously or they have bought a second hand scooter and the scooter requirements have changed.

They may carrier extra weight, use the scooter more than twice a week, live slightly further out of town or live in a hilly or remote area.

Most scooters can upgrade to a Supreme at any point.

Haze Supreme collection

What is a Supreme AGM EX? AGM stands for Absorbent Glass Mat, but what makes it "Extra," and why is it regarded as a superior battery?

AGM batteries are a specialized type of lead-acid battery where the electrolyte is absorbed by a glass mat that surrounds the lead plates. Haze has efficiently utilized unused space within the battery across five different models. This innovation results in more lead and additional conductive material, which increases the battery's amp hours (Ah) and allows for longer usage before requiring a recharge. Basically more battery inside means more scooting for you outside.

The remarkable aspect of the EX Supreme battery is that it retains the same box size. If your scooter is designed to fit two 44AH batteries, using the 44EX means you can enjoy the same physical dimensions while benefiting from 40% more Ah. This enhancement leads to an extended runtime for your scooter.

More range and reliability

Haze has been refining AGM technology specifically designed for scooters for years, which is why they are recognized as an original equipment manufacturer.

An OE product is great; it signifies that trusted brands also rely on our products and integrate them into their scooters during production. For instance, Sunrise Medical scooters utilize Haze batteries in their Q300 and Q400 models.

Now you understand the composition of the Supreme and the audience it caters to. The Supreme comes in a comprehensive size range for all scooters.

Easystart Batteries have been the sole seller of Haze within the UK since 2003!

Sapphire 2 from Sunrise Medical

“The Sapphire 2 is a versatile, large car-portable mobility scooter that combines the ease of disassembly with the performance of a standard pavement scooter. Designed for users who need flexibility and convenience, this 4mph scooter can be effortlessly broken down into four manageable parts, making it perfect for travel and storage. Carrying a user weight of 150kg it is fitted with pneumatic tyres for extra comfort.

“One of the features of the Sapphire 2 is its one-touch Sterling lock, which separates the front and rear halves of the scooter without any need for cables or plugs. Simply lift off the seat, remove the batteries, and use the Sterling lock to separate the scooter into two halves.

“The inclusion of dual handles on the batteries and rear drive unit provides added safety and ease of handling when lifting and transporting the scooter.

“Despite its compact, portable design, the Sapphire 2 does not compromise on performance. With

larger batteries, it offers an impressive 19-mile range, ensuring you can travel further without worrying about running out of power. The powerful LED lights on both the front and rear enhance visibility, ensuring that you are always seen while on the go.

“The Sapphire 2 is Ideal for those who need to transport the scooter but need the comfort and the range of a larger scooter.”

Vierra LiFe by Electric Mobility

“This exceptional scooter has provided immense value and numerous benefits to customers across Scotland over the past 18 months. The Vierra LiFe from Electric Mobility is a compact, user-friendly, lightweight aluminium boot scooter that handles superbly and looks great.

“In a competitive market filled with options, having an edge is essential. The Vierra LiFe stands out as a true champion and innovator in its class. It features Ferro phosphate batteries with a lifetime guarantee, a significant advantage that attracts knowledgeable customers.

“As with all Electric Mobility products, quality is guaranteed; the Vierra LiFe is no different. It offers spacious legroom and comprehensive suspension, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable ride experience for users weighing up to 135kg. Customers also have the option to choose between 25Ah and 12Ah batteries.

“Beyond the impressive product itself, a key advantage of working with Electric Mobility is collaborating with Dave Barnes, the product manager. Dave is one of the most trusted and experienced professionals in the industry, providing exceptional value to the dealer-supplier partnership.”

Shoprider Valencia by Roma Medical

“As all mobility stores with a showroom will tell you, not all scooters suit all customers.

“So for this reason those with sufficient space will stock a number of models from a number of suppliers.

“As a simple guide there will be portable boot scooters, mid-range class 2 scooters and large 8mph class 3 scooters.

“By far the mid-range 4mph class 2 scooters are still the most popular, and for us we find the great value-for-money Shoprider scooters are still the best sellers. Our choice would be the Shoprider Valencia from Roma Medical.

“It has all of the usual features you would expect in a sub-£2,000 scooter –adjustable seat height, adjustable arms, adjustable tiller, lights, split battery pack and non-marking tyres.

“Added to all of this it is built on the classic bulletproof principle of the Shoprider chassis which has heritage in spades and fantastic proven reliability.

“Maybe not the most modern styling but certainly a great all rounder.”

Apex Aluma-Lite from Pride Mobility

“To help our customers make the most of the spring season, we’re loving the Apex Aluma-Lite from Pride Mobility.

“Weighing just 28kg without batteries, the Aluma-Lite is one of the lightest boot scooters on the market. Designed for convenience, it easily dissembles into five parts, making it simple to transport and store in your car boot.

“Built with a lightweight aluminium frame and powered by a lithium battery, this scooter offers an impressive range of up to 11.5 miles at speeds of up to 4.1mph. It also

provides a comfortable ride for users weighing up to 18 stone, ensuring accessibility for a wide range of people.

“Whether it’s a trip to the park, a visit to loved ones, or simply enjoying the fresh air, this scooter is the perfect companion for getting out and about.”

A fond farewell to the trade

As walking stick specialist Classic Canes changes hands, Managing Director

Charlotte Gillan reminisces about 42 years of her family business…

All family businesses play a huge role in the life of their family. They are far more than just a means of earning money; they are a way of life, an identity even, and Classic Canes was a very big part of our family life for over 40 years.

Classic Canes had an unusual start. In the late 1970s, my parents, Ben and Diana Porter, bought a Somerset woodland containing a ruined Tudor hunting lodge. While they were rebuilding the house to live in, they discovered that the surrounding woodland was naturally growing suitable ash and hazel raw material for walking sticks.

They cut the wood and sold it to the

Coopers walking stick factory, which at that time was manufacturing wooden walking sticks at Goldalming in Surrey. On a visit to the factory in 1982, my mother saw the company’s finished products and bought £450-worth to offer to local shopkeepers in Somerset. She had a background in sales and marketing and was soon selling sticks to gift shops, country clothing stores and tobacconists from the back of her estate car in between doing the school run.

The early range was quite limited: wooden crooks, derbys and long, country sticks. Today Classic Canes offers over 500 models, but in those days orthopaedic canes were in their

infancy, and there were few sticks designed especially for women. Ladies mostly had to make do with a man’s stick cut down in length, which was neither elegant nor comfortable.

GETTING ESTABLISHED

Before the internet, finding a new supplier meant a trip to the County Library in Taunton to search their directories. Before digital printing, the cost and minimum order quantities of printed materials such as business cards, order pads and price lists were very significant for start-up businesses: some of our early efforts were extremely basic. Orders had to be written by hand on triplicate pads and added up manually.

The majority of businesses started in the UK do not last to see their third birthday, but by the third year Classic Canes was making a profit and growing fast. A number of wholesalers had failed in the early 1980s recession so, fortunately for us, local retailers needed a new walking stick supplier.

When my father saw how well my mother’s little business was doing, he worked out how much more it could be earning with a second person’s input and joined her in finding new customers across the west country and then further afield. Long-standing customers will remember choosing their sticks from the back of his van, with him printing their orders on a very early laptop and portable printer.

Canes attended its first trade fairs in the late 1990s, the biggest being the Spring Fair which in those days was enormous: over 20 halls of the NEC and a lengthy waiting list for exhibitors.

My mother was thrilled to be given a last-minute cancellation and prepared a stand at two weeks’ notice, running up a cloth backdrop on her sewing machine. Export buyers found Classic Canes there, and we started selling to Europe, America and Japan. We have exported to over 50 countries during our time, which is quite impressive for a small business based in a Somerset woodland.

We found exporting very simple in those days: take the order and then figure out how to despatch it. The bureaucracy involved in exporting is much more onerous these days, especially since Brexit: one of the ‘hidden costs’ that make doing business more expensive than it used to be.

INTRODUCING LADIES’ CANES

My mother was a great innovator. On a 1990s trip to Japan, she noticed elegant, patterned canes with smaller handles for ladies for sale in

the department stores. She decided to introduce the first models of this type to the UK market. Many retailers were astonished at first, but they took off, and patterned ladies’ canes soon developed into a company speciality.

The mobility sector came to us rather than us pursuing it. We had assumed the industry was only interested in functional, hospital-type sticks, but some mobility retailers felt differently and approached us, wanting more stylish sticks.

Much mobility equipment at the

time was still very dull to look at, and our colourful canes added a bright and cheerful note to many showrooms.

“Ooh, I wish I needed a stick,” people would say when they saw our range at the Naidex trade fairs: music to our ears after all our hard work to persuade people to think about walking sticks in a positive way.

My brother and I grew up with Classic Canes. In the early days, sticks were stored in every spare corner in the house, including under our beds. Johnny learned to count by packing rubber ferrules into bags of 10, and we earned our pocket money sticking code labels onto sticks. We learned at a young age about cashflow and saw the consequences of its ebbs and flows in our daily lives: a great business education for any child.

We modelled for the Classic Canes catalogues alongside the family golden retrievers, although it was the dogs who were the customers’ favourites.

Once, we sold a very large number of tippling sticks, which contain a glass vial for whisky, to the Johnny Walker whisky company in the USA. The order was so large it paid for a much-needed extension to our warehouse.

“By creating the patterns myself, from bees to cats to modern artinspired designs, we could have precisely what our

After the great order had been despatched, my mother asked the American buyer why she had chosen Classic Canes, hoping to hear compliments about our service, quality and reputation. “Oh honey,” said the buyer, “We looked at your website and we just loved your dogs.” Needless to say, the dogs featured heavily in our marketing ever after in case any other buyers felt the same way.

I returned to the business in 2003, having worked in luxury goods marketing and also having had a spell as a freelance features writer. My first job was to organise barcodes for all our products. I spent days sat at an early barcode

machine entering the numbers and descriptions manually on a telephone-style keypad. We never found a single typo, so my computer skills have obviously deteriorated a lot since then. My second job was to review the marketing and brand image of Classic Canes. I felt strongly that we needed to brand the products ‘Classic Canes’ so the public could identify and ask for our sticks. It was a good decision, as it elevated Classic Canes from being an ordinary seller of sticks to being a prestigious brand that retailers were proud to stock. “We tell our customers you are the Rolls-Royce of walking sticks” is a story we have heard many times, and it never fails to warm our hearts.

INSPIRED DESIGNS

One of the most fulfilling tasks for me at Classic Canes has been the

design side, creating new walking stick patterns in particular. I am not a trained artist, but when commercial artists failed to provide exactly what I wanted, I thought, how hard can it be? There are patterns available on the internet that can be used for walking sticks, but they look ‘off the shelf’.

We needed patterns exclusive to Classic Canes to defeat the copyists and reflect our distinctly British sense of style. By creating the patterns myself, from bees to cats to modern art-inspired designs, we could have precisely what our market needed. When we announced we were selling Classic Canes, it was gratifying that it was many of these products that customers were most anxious about obtaining in the future. I also greatly enjoyed creating the catalogues, particularly the lifestyle photography that showed people using walking sticks as fashionable accessories. This was very important in breaking down the stigma that was associated with mobility aids.

Throughout our 42 years, Classic Canes has remained very much a family business. During the Covid crisis, business collapsed to eight per

cent of normal sales in March 2020, and all the employees were furloughed. I found myself in sole command of the office administration, finances and warehouse work, with some help from my mother who, in her 70s, rolled up her sleeves and picked up her tape gun once more to pack the few orders we had in those surreal early weeks. It was a very hard time, but it was fun too.

After Covid, we found the business environment rather changed. It was no longer viable to attend trade fairs. We missed them, but they had become a flag-waving rather than a moneymaking exercise due to declining visitor numbers.

Changes in shopping behaviour mean that many of the charming independent high street shops we supplied have closed, and the business has moved increasingly to online retailers. Perhaps as a consequence, retail selling now often seems less of an art form than it was and more a matter of lower prices and algorithms, which

tends to favour cheap Chinese production rather than supporting quality manufacturing and sustainability.

DECIDING TO SELL

When we announced to our customers that we were selling the business, I was surprised by the reaction of many. They congratulated me, but then they wanted to know in great detail how we had done it. Quite a few confided that they too would like to sell their businesses. Some had tried but had little interest; others were waiting for the right time. Many said that they were finding the costs and responsibilities of employing members of staff too onerous; others were fretful about the economy.

Times are changing, as they always are, but we will be sad to leave the

industry. Our customers have been a fascinating part of our lives, as have all our suppliers, both of stock and services: trade magazines, freight agents, printers, packaging suppliers who went to great trouble to make long, thin walking stick cartons for us… The list of indispensable people goes on and on, demonstrating how interconnected we all are.

To all those collaborators reading this today, my family and I thank you most gratefully for your support and wish you every success in the future. We have learned so much from you and, if I ever write my long-threatened book about Classic Canes, it will be because you have been such an inspiration.

Landing in Lincoln

East England mobility retailer Seacroft Mobility recently opened its biggest showroom yet in Lincoln. Daniel Swain, Director, tells us more…

Lincolnshire-based Seacroft Mobility is a family-run business which has been providing products for mobility and personal care for over 25 years. Dan Swain, the director of Seacroft Mobility, took over the business in 2008 after purchasing four shops in the Lincolnshire, and he quickly spotted the scope for growth.

There are now several Seacroft Mobility showrooms dotted around eastern England, including in Kings Lynn, Boston, Ingoldmells, Mablethorpe, Nottingham, Skegness and Spalding, with the new Lincoln store its biggest showroom yet. Its stores also have a strong Motability presence.

The store opened in October 2024. Dan explains: “This is our biggest store yet at 300 square metres and is located on a busy crossroads, next door to a Costa Coffee shop. We have found the

location is now one of our best sites.”

The showroom is staffed by Dean, the store manager, and Paul, who both have a diverse knowledge of all mobility products. Adds Dan: “We do particularly well with rise and recline chairs, as both Dean and Paul have previously worked in the furniture industry and have been able to transition their knowledge into the mobility sector.”

Dan explains that the store works very differently to the other Seacroft Mobility stores, and he is particularly happy with how the store layout boasts specific zones for the customer to explore as they move through the store.

“We decided to select a few key manufacturers that see our vision for the store and were happy to help us create that vision,” Dan explains. “We worked closely with Sunrise Medical and Motion Healthcare to create manufacturer-specific areas. I feel it

helps the customer navigate the store and look through the offerings from specific manufacturers.”

Staff at the showroom, Dan says, have definitely seen an increase in powerchair and manual wheelchair assessments since having a dedicated Sunrise Medical display.

The decision to move to the new Lincoln site was forced upon them, explains Dan, as the landlord of their old site was developing the area and

“This is our biggest store yet at 300 square metres and is located on a busy crossroads”

needed them to move sites, but it has worked out very well. “Fortunately for us they also owned the new site and the transition was quite smooth,” says Dan.

The only real challenge Dan and the team encountered was with regards to time scales. Dan says: “We had two weeks to fit out the new store and move out of our old store. As we did all the work ourselves, we didn’t get much sleep for those two weeks!”

TV AD CAMPAIGN

Dan explains that Seacroft Mobility promoted the opening of the new store through magazine and newspaper advertising, but its main driver of footfall has been via their website, he says.

The store in Lincoln has already seen a mix of older age group customers coming through its doors, alongside younger customers interested in its range of active manual wheelchair products.

“The store is working well for active wheelchairs, powerchairs and rise and recline chairs,” exclaims Dan.

Among the products currently proving popular with customers, he says, are the new Nitron, a carbon fibre powerchair with a sleek, foldable design from Motion Healthcare, and the Scoozy S800 mobility scooter from Sunrise Medical. “I am excited to see these products do well in store,” says Dan.

To help really spread the word and make an impact Seacroft Mobility has recently begun its first regional television ad campaign on ITV, which it hopes will drive customers to its stores.

The 30-second ad will be shown three to four times a day during the daytime TV slots.

Alongside this Dan says that Seacroft Mobility will be leaflet dropping every home within a 40-minute drive of its stores.

The new-and-improved website continues to play an important part in Seacroft Mobility’s business. Says Dan: “Until mid-last year our website was very poor and rarely updated, but since launching our new site we have seen it boost all aspects of our business, and we will continue to keep the website looking fresh and up-to-date.”

He continues: “Since our new site went live, we have seen a significant growth in ecommerce sales, which is an area of the business we feel is very important and will continue to develop.”

FUTURE PLANS

Looking ahead Dan hopes to continue working with companies that “make doing business easy” and to this end it

will be working particularly closely with Sunrise Medical, Motion Healthcare and Electric Mobility.

As for the possibility of opening more new stores, Dan says that while they are always on the lookout for new locations and opportunities, for now, Seacroft Mobility is focused on making its existing stores work to their best potential. He also hopes to continue building on the growth of Seacroft Mobility’s website.

Dan says: “I think the focus is on remaining competitive and offering a fairly-priced product to the end user whilst still maintaining a good enough margin to run bricks and mortar stores.”

Having entered the mobility sector in 2017 with its lightweight folding mobility scooter, SunTech UK –trading as eFOLDi – has gone from strength to strength…

Founded by CEO Sumi Wang, the concept and initial design of the eFOLDi scooter was created by her father and inventor, Jianmin Wang, to help him navigate the busy city of Beijing after breaking his leg. Since its launch, the Surrey-based manufacturer has gone on to launch a new version of its original model and diversified into the powerchair category. The latest product to be added to its range is the Navigator powered wheelchair. THIIS catches up with Sumi Wang to find out more…

PLEASE CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT WAS BEHIND EFOLDI’S DECISION TO LAUNCH THE NAVIGATOR?  HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO THE OUTGOING EFOLDI POWERCHAIR?

”At eFOLDi, we’re always pushing the boundaries of innovation, challenging ourselves to create mobility solutions that are lighter, more portable, and more user-friendly. The decision to launch the Navigator stemmed from our commitment to continuous improvement and a determination to leverage the latest advancements in materials and technology.

“One of the biggest innovations to the Navigator is the new high-strength, ultra-lightweight magnesium alloy chassis. This not only significantly reduces the weight of the product, but it also enhances durability, making the Navigator one of the lightest, most versatile powered wheelchairs in its class. The Navigator also features an upgraded attendant control system and rapid-charge lithium battery technology as standard.

“Compared to the original Power Chair model, it delivers a marked uplift in performance with improved manoeuvrability, enhanced portability, and greater comfort for the user. Ultimately, the Navigator represents our dedication to empowering users with greater freedom and independence

while ensuring they have the most advanced technology at their fingertips.”

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT THE KIND OF RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT THAT WENT INTO THE NAVIGATOR?

“Development for the Navigator was a two-year journey of research, design innovation, and rigorous testing. From the outset, we used rapid prototyping techniques to constantly refine the design quickly, allowing us to test and iterate efficiently.

“User feedback played a critical role –both from individuals who rely on their powerchairs daily and trade partners with their deep industry insights. Their input helped us fine tune the overall performance for the Navigator.

“Ultimately, the Navigator represents our dedication to empowering users with greater freedom and independence”
Sumi Wang, CEO of eFOLDi

“Durability and safety were also top priorities, so we subjected the Navigator to intensive product testing –simulating thousands of folding cycles, tackling varied terrains, and gauging its resilience under different conditions. By leveraging advanced materials like magnesium alloys and refining every detail through continuous feedback, we’ve created a powerchair that’s not just lighter and stronger; it’s also built around the unique needs of its users.”

CAN YOU DESCRIBE ANY PARTICULAR CHALLENGES YOU ENCOUNTERED ALONG THE WAY?

“One of the biggest challenges was achieving the perfect balance between portability and performance, without compromising on overall durability. We wanted the Navigator to be as lightweight as possible, which is why we chose magnesium alloy, but this also meant ensuring it remained tough enough to handle everyday use with ease.

“We explored multiple design iterations, refining the frame structure and folding mechanism to maximise strength while keeping weight to a minimum. Rigorous testing helped us perfect the chair’s capabilities and its overall resilience, according to various test criteria.

“Striking the balance took time, but by continuously testing, refining, and gathering user feedback, we believe we’ve developed a winning product that delivers the best of both worlds - exceptional portability, without sacrificing on performance or quality.”

WHAT HAS BEEN THE RESPONSE YOU HAVE HAD ABOUT THE NAVIGATOR FROM RETAILERS SO FAR?

“The response from our trade partners has been overwhelmingly positive. Retailers have been particularly impressed by the Navigator’s performance improvements and its industry-leading specification.

“Weighing just over 12kg, excluding

battery and optional accessories, some view its lightweight construction as a potential ‘game-changer’.

“Another element that’s resonated with retailers is the enhanced levels of comfort. With its generouslysized seating area, the Navigator accommodates a broader range of users, and the new breathable seat cushion delivers much greater comfort and additional support. We’ve also received numerous comments from retailers noting that the motor unit operates far more quietly than other folding powerchairs.

“Overall, retailers see the Navigator as a big step forward in powerchair design, recognising its superior portability and enhanced user experience. It’s been fantastic to receive such a strong endorsement from trade partners.”

EFOLDI MADE A RAFT OF UPDATES TO THE LITE FOLDING MOBILITY SCOOTER EARLIER THIS YEAR. WHAT WAS THE THINKING BEHIND THIS?

“With the portable scooter segment becoming increasingly more attractive to manufacturers, and consequently

“Retailers see the Navigator as a big step forward in powerchair design”

more competitive, it was critically important for us to keep developing the product to help maintain a leading market position.

“That’s why we introduced a range of key enhancements, all designed to improve portability, ease of use, and user safety.

“Customers also now have the opportunity to customise their scooter, with factory-fitted armrests for greater comfort, coloured seat cushions, and the option of solid or pneumatic tyres. We’ve also added an on-board charging point conveniently located on the tiller for easy access.

“Another major upgrade on the upgraded Lite model is the new intelligent safety system, which enhances stability when turning or manoeuvring over more challenging terrain.

“These updates ensure the Lite remains a popular choice for consumers looking for a lightweight, high-performance folding travel scooter, particularly those wishing to maintain a more active lifestyle.”

DO YOU SEE THE LITE AS YOUR BIGGEST SELLING PRODUCT IN THE RANGE?

“Yes, absolutely. We’ve experienced a phenomenal growth in unit sales, since first launching the Lite scooter back in 2021, and it is now our best-selling product to date.

The Navigator boasts a lightweight magnesium-alloy chassis

“While we’re incredibly proud of its success, we never rest on our laurels, so we still have big ambitions to continue to innovate, with further emphasis on design enhancements. Maintaining a competitive edge in the portable scooter market means a constant focus on R&D and continuous improvement.

“Looking ahead, we’re exploring new innovations to enhance portability even further, leveraging more advanced materials and other cutting-edge technologies to add value and make the Lite even more versatile. Usability is also a key area of focus – we’re always listening to customer feedback to refine comfort, convenience, and overall performance.

“The award-winning Lite has already set a high standard in the industry, but we believe there’s always room for evolution. Our goal is to ensure it remains the go-to choice for end-users who want to travel – without limits.”

GUINNESS ASSET

MANAGEMENT HAS BEEN A MAJOR INVESTOR FOR SUNTECH/EFOLDI SINCE 2020 – CAN YOU DESCRIBE HOW THIS RELATIONSHIP HAS EVOLVED OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS?

“Guinness Asset Management has proved to be a highly supportive partner for us since their initial investment in April 2020. Over the past five years, the relationship has evolved into a strong, strategic collaboration, with the Guinness team providing not just their financial backing but also invaluable business and commercial guidance.

“Their long-range investment approach aligns perfectly with our vision for sustainable growth and driving innovation in the mobility sector. They understand the importance of a continuous focus on R&D and have been instrumental in helping us scale our operations internationally while staying true to our core missiondelivering high-quality, life-enhancing mobility solutions that help people rediscover their freedom and independence.

“Having a partner that shares our long-term ambitions has been invaluable, allowing us to push boundaries, expand our product range, and strengthen our market position

on a global level. We look forward to continuing this partnership as we progress with the next phase of growth.”

AS

A

COMPANY KNOWN

FOR ITS INVESTMENT IN R&D ARE YOU SEEKING FURTHER INVESTMENT

FROM PRIVATE EQUITY FIRMS?

Sumi: “At eFOLDi, we are deeply committed to innovation, and our investment in R&D remains a key driver of our success. While we always keep an open mind about future opportunities, we are not actively seeking further private equity investment at this stage.

“Our current partnerships provide strong support for our growth and product development ambitions. That said, as we continue to expand and explore new technologies, we may consider additional investment in the future if it aligns with our long-term vision and strategic goals.”

HOW

DOES EFOLDI LIKE TO SUPPORT ITS RETAIL PARTNERS IN TERMS OF SALES AND MARKETING?

“Supporting our retail partners is a top priority for us, and we take great pride in delivering high service levels across our sales and marketing functions. Our investors at Guinness Asset Management share this commitment also, recognising the importance of strong trade partnerships in driving long-term success.

“We provide comprehensive marketing support, including in-store

point-of-sale displays, and a host of digital assets and training materials to help retailers showcase our products effectively.

“Our dedicated sales team works closely with trade partners, delivering training, supporting on product demonstrations, and providing ongoing assistance to ensure retailers have the knowledge and confidence to sell our mobility solutions. By maintaining open communication and a handson approach, we aim to build lasting relationships and support our retailers in delivering the best experience to their customers.”

YOUR NEW WARRANTY SCHEME INTRODUCED EARLIER THIS YEAR INCLUDES SEVEN YEARS WARRANTY PROTECTION ON ALL YOUR LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO INTRODUCE THIS INITIATIVE?

“We launched our seven-year battery warranty to set a new standard in the industry and to reinforce confidence in lithium-ion technology in general.

“Despite lithium batteries being widely used in a range of industrial and consumer applications, there have been some pockets of negative press around the potential risks, but this was often attributed to lower-quality products entering the market.

“By offering an extended warranty, we’re not only standing behind our products, but we’re also demonstrating leadership, underlining the fact we only use high-quality, rigorously tested components. This commitment translates into a warranty package that

The Navigator easily folds up and fits conveniently into a car boot

ensures both retailers and end users are protected by a seven-year lithium battery warranty for total piece of mind.

“eFOLDi only source premiumgrade lithium batteries from trusted manufacturers like Panasonic and Samsung, so this provides us with much greater assurances in respect to their overall quality, reliability, and expected lifespan. Additionally, our strict quality control procedures ensure every battery is thoroughly checked and tested. We have many batteries still in use from products we sold in 2016 –proof of their durability, and reliability in the field.”

IN WHAT YEAR DID EFOLDI START TO BREAK INTO THE COMPETITIVE US MARKET, AND HOW HAS THAT JOURNEY BEEN FOR THE BUSINESS SO FAR?

“After a period of market research, we entered the US market in the autumn of 2023.

“It has certainly been a challenging journey, as the market is hugely competitive, geographically dispersed, and there have been several logistical hurdles to overcome along the way, particularly, from a regulatory perspective. However, we’ve made significant strides, including achieving FDA approval on our Lite scooter, and we have several others currently pending.

“Securing FDA approval was certainly a major milestone for us, as it validates the quality and safety of our products, from a global standpoint.

“Finding the right channel partners has also been crucially important. Building strong relationships with retailers and distributors who share our long-term vision for growth and success is key.

“We are fully focused on expanding our footprint in the US, and we’re confident that our commitment to innovation, product quality, and customer satisfaction will drive continued success in this key export market.”

WHICH COUNTRIES HAVE YOU HAVE ENJOYED EXPORT SUCCESS WITH EFOLDI PRODUCTS, AND ARE ANY OTHER COUNTRIES IN YOUR SIGHT?

“Outside of the US market, we’ve had strong export success in mainland Europe, where we’ve built up some solid partnerships with distributors in countries such as Germany, Italy, France, and Spain. We’ve also seen positive growth in markets further afield, including Israel and Australia, where the demand for high-quality mobility solutions is on the rise.

“Looking ahead, we’re exploring opportunities in Southeast Asia, with countries like Singapore showing some potential. Additionally, we’re looking at the possibility of entering the lucrative Japanese market, where the demand for advanced mobility products is relatively mature.

“As we continue to scale, our goal is to build sustainable, long-term

“The Lite remains a popular choice for consumers looking for a lightweight, highperformance folding travel scooter”

partnerships across these key regions while also maintaining the high standards that our brand is best known for.”

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE MAIN ISSUES FACING THE MOBILITY SECTOR AT THE MOMENT?

“One of the main challenges facing the mobility sector today is the rise of online resellers who don’t promise to deliver comprehensive user assessments before selling any product. This can often lead to consumers purchasing the wrong product for their exact needs, resulting in customer dissatisfaction and potential safety concerns.

“With relatively low barriers to market, it can lead to new entrants offering products without the same quality controls or customer service standards that the more established companies seek to maintain.

“While competition is always healthy and it ensures greater levels of choice for consumers, in some instances, unfortunately, not all the products being sold meet the same rigorous safety standards that consumers might expect.

“We believe a lack of transparent

The Navigator's comfortable seating area has been a hit

regulatory controls does potentially create challenges for the industry as a whole. So, it’s essential that the sector works together to establish much clearer, stringent standards, with better oversight, to protect both customers and the industry’s reputation.”

LOOKING BACK OVER THE LAST 12 MONTHS, WHAT HAVE BEEN THE PROUDEST MOMENTS FOR YOU?

“Reflecting on the past year, two moments stand out as being particularly proud for me.

"First, the launch of the Navigator was a major milestone for us. Seeing the product come off the production line after two years of intense R&D was incredibly rewarding for me personally as CEO and founder of the business. It marked the culmination of a lot of hard work and dedication, and we’re thrilled with how it’s been received in the market so far.

“Second, achieving FDA approval for our Lite scooter product was another significant achievement. The process was tough, with stringent regulatory tests, but passing them confirmed the quality and safety of our product in a highly competitive market. It was also a testament to our team’s dedication and commitment to delivering products that meet the highest standards.”

AND LOOKING AHEAD, WHAT DOES THE REST OF 2025 LOOK LIKE FOR YOU IN TERMS OF WHAT YOU ARE DOING WITH THE BUSINESS?

“Looking ahead to the rest of 2025, we’re excited to continue our journey of growth and innovation. We have another exciting new product launch in the pipeline, which will further expand our range and enhance the offering available to our trade customers.

“Innovation remains at the heart of our strategy, and we’re committed to offering competitive solutions that address the evolving needs of our users.

“We’re also focused on expanding our commercial team to better support our growth, both in existing markets and new territories. Our goal is to solidify our position in the US and Australian markets while exploring additional export opportunities,

particularly in Southeast Asia and beyond. As we continue to strengthen our global reach, we’re confident that 2025 will be a year of significant progress and success for eFOLDi.”

WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED AS A FEMALE ENTREPRENEUR, AND HOW HAVE YOU OVERCOME THEM?

“As a female entrepreneur in the mobility products manufacturing industry – a traditionally maledominated sector – one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is being taken seriously, particularly in the early days of eFOLDi. Securing investment was another hurdle, as female-led businesses often receive less funding.

“I overcame these challenges by letting results speak for themselves –proving our product’s value through innovation and persistence.

"Surrounding myself with a strong, diverse team and building strategic partnerships helped establish credibility. Most importantly, I embraced resilience, staying focused on our mission to empower mobility and independence.”

WHAT ARE YOUR LONG-TERM GOALS FOR YOUR BUSINESS?

“Our long-term goal at eFOLDi is to maintain a leadership position in the lightweight, portable mobility solution category. We aim to continually drive innovation – developing smarter, more

advanced products that enhance the freedom and independence for users worldwide.

“Expanding internationally is another priority for us. We’ve already seen strong growth in Europe, North America and Australia, and we’re actively exploring new export markets, including Southeast Asia.

“Sustainability is also key – we are 100 per cent committed to leveraging more eco-friendly materials and developing products that are as energy-efficient as technology allows.

“Ultimately, I want eFOLDi to be more than just a brand – it should be a movement that reshapes how people think about mobility, making independence accessible to everyone, regardless of age or ability.”

What makes a good trunk support? 6. Postural Variation

Different postures are required for different activities. In this article we review the impacts that different postures have on the seated occupant, and the impact that adjustments to their seating system can have on the occupant’s functionality.

Sitting is an activity, and postures will change during the day to accommodate for fatigue, changes in tone, etc, in addition to the changes needed to achieve functional activities. Functional movements during wheelchair use such as head and upper extremity movements are most effectively executed when multiple body segments are involved, so we need to be able to vary our postures to achieve our required outcomes.

Adjusting the position of one part of the body frequently has an impact on at least one other part of the body, often a good distance apart. When you look up to the ceiling when seated, you will need to extend your neck, i.e. your cervical spine - but extending the neck can also be assisted by some extension of the thoracic or even lumbar and pelvic segments. Conversely, changes in your foot position may have an impact on your head’s position.

Other impacts can occur from proximal changes such as reclining the back support or tilting the seating system, where even a small change can have a large impact on the effectiveness, or even safety, of various seating accessories.

TILT IN SPACE

Tilt in space has often been recommended as a means to reduce

the pressures on the occupant’s ischial tuberosities, the bony parts on the base of the pelvis, but to achieve this the seating system needs to be tilted back at least 30 degrees: this may be a great position to relax, but otherwise is not very functional. With tilt in space, the orientation of the seating system components that are attached to the seating system (as compared with being attached to the frame of the wheelchair) and therefore sections of the body, stay fixed (at least initially), but the orientation of the whole body changes.

The part of the body that tends to be affected most is the head since the occupant is left staring at the ceiling initially. To be able to react with their surroundings they then make postural

adjustments, such as flexing their neck to adjust their line of sight (Figure 1). This can lead to greater trunk flexion into the back support which in turn can result in the pelvis being pushed forward. Ultimately the occupant will probably need an assistant to help them reposition themselves.

RECLINE

A common postural adjustment device on a seating system will be the recline function. This is where the most frequent problems occur: the fulcrum point for the device is usually at the junction between the back support and the seat – which is not level with the fulcrum of recline in the occupant’s body, which is the hip joint (Figure

2). The result is that during recline there are shear forces between the occupant’s back and the seat’s back support as the two move different amounts relative to each other.

At the same time accessories attached to the back support, such as lateral or head supports, will move up the trunk and out of position relative to the part of the body they are supposed to be supporting. In addition, with the pelvis being rotated into a greater posterior tilt, there is a risk of the occupant sliding forward on their seat, thereby also adding frictional and shear forces under the buttocks.

In the past, the shear forces on the

occupant’s back have been addressed by the back support material being on rollers and allowed to move with the occupant’s body, but this did not address the positioning challenges. Biangular back supports allow for just static separation of the pelvis from the trunk. Recently an innovative approach has been made available in the EPiC seating system, which allows for dynamic separation of these two parts of the posterior support, where the recline pivot point is aligned with the body’s pivot point of the hip joint (Figure 3).

The result is that while the pelvis to thigh angle is maintained, the lower and mid-thoracic areas can move backwards. The lumbar spine will follow and extend without direct force on the stiff lumbar spine. This innovative approach and movement enables spine extension with minimal shear and friction at the occupant-back support interface and the occupant-seat cushion interface.

Since the movement of the thoracic spine occurs in sync with the occupant’s movements there are no shifts in the attached postural support devices, such as head supports or lateral supports, when this movement occurs. In addition the position of the thoracic spine is crucial for obtaining a functional head position and upper extremity function and helps to reduce the amount of energy needed from postural muscles to sit upright. There are three optional methods for use:

1. Adjusting, then maintaining an appropriate pelvis to thigh angle for the occupant. This can also be used where the occupant has a hyperkyphotic spine to relieve the degree of neck hyperextension

needed to achieve a functional eyeline.

2. Caregiver induced passive postural variation, by allowing the lower and mid-thoracic segments of the back support to move backward (which can be symmetrical or asymmetrical) in sync with the movement of the spine (Figure 4).

3. Occupant induced active postural variation (arising from postural fatigue, upper extremity movements, or tone, for example) causing the lower and midthoracic segments to move backwards (symmetrically or asymmetrically), in sync with the movements of the spine, and the gas struts then assist a return into a more neutral resting position as desired.

UPPER BODY EXTREMITIES

The back support is the usual mounting point for the head support: aspects to be considered around this have been covered in the “What makes a good head support?” THIIS Let’s Get it Clear articles.

What about the relationship of the trunk support to the shoulder girdle, arms, and hands? As discussed in Part 5 in this series, most wheelchair occupants do not need a back support any higher than being level with the base of the scapulae, because there is normally no contact between the occupant’s back and back support above this point (an exception is occupants undergoing high tone extensor spasms, for example). Indeed, a higher-positioned back support will impair the occupant’s range of upper body movement, and therefore their functionality.

Of great importance for most people’s functionality is the use of their hands, whether for writing, eating, texting, or operating a joystick, for example. An appropriately positioned back support can facilitate this functionality, but on top of this is the

back support’s physical relationship with the chair’s arm supports. This is where there has been a tendency towards inappropriate design.

For most people the anatomically correct, and therefore comfortable position, is to have our hands in front of us, and not rotated outwards along a chair’s standard arm supports. The result is that maybe our elbows alone are placed on these supports, and frequently these are not at the appropriate height to support the upper arm correctly in the shoulder socket. Without proper support at this point, occupants (particularly those with reduced joint proprioceptive sensation after, for example, a stroke) end up with subluxed joints and consequent extreme pain. This all could be prevented by early intervention with an appropriately positioned arm support.

One such support is Bodypoint’s Dynamic Arm Support (DAS) (Figure 5) which was invented by the renowned Belgian physiotherapist, Bart Van der Heyden (also the inventor of the EPiC seating system!). The DAS provides three points of support – at the elbow, along the forearm, and at the hand, with all parts designed to provide anatomically correct heights and angles of support and movement.

The clinical benefits and outcomes include:

• Contracture prevention and management

• Reduction of shoulder pain

• Mitigated impact of abnormal

upper extremity tone

• Strength and proprioceptive training of the upper extremity

• Prevent and minimise shoulder subluxation

• Minimise injury to the upper extremity

However, the DAS will only be effective if the positioning of the arm and hand are set up correctly for the occupant, and that any postural variation around the seating system does not affect this set-up. This is equally true in relation to all other functional uses of the hands where upper body positioning is crucial.

IN CONCLUSION

A good trunk support correctly prescribed and positioned can keep the occupant safe and can facilitate daily functional activities. Think of a back support as being a head positioning unit! Sitting is an activity and involves frequent postural variation. It is important that the elements of the seating system facilitate this variation in a safe and effective way.
