So, the EU Referendum is just a few weeks away now and we all have a choice to make (unless you can’t be bothered to vote of course!). Although I am very tempted to use this space to push my preferred course of action, I will resist the temptation. What has become clear though, over the past few weeks, is that many people are struggling to make a decision because they really can’t get any concrete facts – the only real fact is that no-one really can claim to know what will happen either way – no-one has a crystal ball.
Editor David N Russell Tel: 01536 710050 E-mail: info@thiis.co.uk
Bring the discussion back to a business point of view; it can sometimes be the case that customers struggle to make a decision to buy from you too – because they don’t have enough information. One of the clearest examples of this is the lack of confidence building information on company websites. There is so much useful information that you could have on a website, such as who you are, why you are doing what you do, how experienced you are, what training the team have undertaken, interesting installations and supply stories that you have been involved in – the list goes on and on. It doesn’t take that long and when it’s up on the site, it’s always there to make that difference if someone is trying to work out who to buy from. They say information is king. It certainly helps to bring in the sales.

Blinging up the showroom – 70,000 reasons to take a look! Most retailers will have sold products with all the extra’s on and maybe with special adaptions that make it the highest spec item they have ever supplied, but I wonder how many would have had a product in the showroom that will have taken over 300 hours to produce? The special Sportrider scooter promoted by central London retailer John Bell & Croyden boasts 70,000 Swarkovski crystals, Italian leather and 24ct gold plating – not the sort of product that you would be expecting to sell every day! John Bell & Croyden has been pharmacist to The Queen for more than fifty years and last year opened the doors to its new health and wellbeing concept on Wigmore Street in the capital. It was the result of a multi-million pound investment, with marbled flooring and rose gold fixtures, while showcasing the store’s 200 year heritage with its existing architecture and ornate ceiling. The pharmacy was first opened in 1798 by John Bell, whose son, Jacob, went on to found the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in 1842. The company has, on display, a mock-up of the Coronation Anointing Oil used during the coronation of Her Majesty The Queen in June 1953. The original is kept under lock and key. There are also prescription books from the past 200 years that contain prescriptions that Florence Nightingale used to get. The pharmacy also has old equipment used in pharmacy compounding and pestle and mortars from a couple of hundred years ago. They are on display, so people come in and take pictures of them. Robin Winfield, Operations Director at John Bell & Croyden told us about the challenges the company faced with what was a substantial showroom redesign. “The main challenge” he told us, “was making sure that our patients and customers continued to get a consistent level of service throughout the refit. We undertook the refurbishment in three phases, closing different areas of the store 6 www.thiis.co.uk
during each phase. This did cause some minor disruption as products were moved to other areas but we brought in extra colleagues to help our customers navigate the shop floor and overall we were pleased by how well we performed during this “Never accept period.” Robin also told us the advice he would you give other people looking to redesign a showroom. “Before embarking on a complete refit the first thing you should do is define what you want at
your first quote”

the end of it. It should not simply be about the design but also the products and services you want to deliver as a result, and the people you want to provide these products and services to.” Robin says that the finances should add up. “Will the funds invested into the project be able to offer a return. Refits are extremely expensive so you must ask yourself: “If I’m going to spend X amount of money, will this result in an X increase in sales and margin.” The next step is to ‘price it up and plan it’. “Never accept your first quote and be careful during the building work not to keep adding things that weren’t outlined in the original plan unless, that is, you think these will aid the later ROI.” Robin says that, during the work, reward your customers for staying with you. “We gave out loyalty cards with discounts during the period of time that works were being carried out. We also kept our customers and patients informed and updated with our plans and progress, and our vision for the end result. More importantly, we asked customers for their opinions at the beginning of the process — one suggestion was to have more products to help with mobility, so we did that.” And Robin says, be brave. “Go into new areas associated with your skills even if it makes you feel a little uncomfortable. Give people reasons to come to your store because, at the end of it,
you will have a destination that people will travel to and pass by other places in order to come to you.” And finally, “At the end, reward your colleagues who worked through the refit and celebrate your customers coming back.” So, how did the business judge whether the changes were a success? Robin says that this is done on two levels. “Firstly through qualitative research with customers in store, asking them what they do and do not find appealing about the refit, and what they would change if they could. Secondly, we will carry out quantitative research, a constant “Go into new areas associated analysis of the sales in with your skills even if it makes each area. If an area is performing well, we you feel a little uncomfortable” need to understand how to make sure it continues to do so and if not, assess if something broken, whether it needs to be fixed, and if so, fix it.” “If an area continues not to perform” Robin suggests, “you may want to consider removing it from the store. What may have worked previously may not in the new store, you have to be willing to adapt to the evolving needs of your customers.” The website is at www.johnbellcroyden.co.uk

Forever Fabulous as retailer launches another unique campaign A couple of months ago we featured a marketing campaign from retailer Essential Aids that really caught the eye. The company put its own spin on the cult movie Quadrophenia with its very own ‘Quadrosenior’ campaign which involved transforming walking frames in the style of Mods and Rockers and with some very effective imagery using older models. Now the business has chosen the UK’s oldest transgender patient as a poster girl for the company. It has enlisted the help of Ruth Rose, an 83 year-old ageism and transgender activist, to front their latest campaign - ‘Forever Fabulous’. Essentialaids.com MD, Alex Wrenn, told us: “Ruth is a fantastic example of someone who, despite having had two hip replacements and a new knee, is living life to the full, campaigning for issues that are close to her heart.” Model Ruth, 83, became the oldest person in the UK to transition to being female when she was 79. Ruth now advises government bodies, charities and many other organisations on ageism and transgender issues. Ruth explains what motivated her to assist the company with its campaign: “Living on my own after each of three joint operations in my midseventies, I made full use of the right mobility equipment to speed my recovery and return to an unrestricted active life. Now well into in my eighties, nothing holds me back from my daily swims in the sea, my sailing, my cycling, my walking and my travelling. I am proud to have been chosen by Essential Aids to represent what a great and exciting life older people can enjoy.” Forever Fabulous follows on in a similar vein to the last campaign, ‘Quadrosenior’, where Essential Aids showed that age and mobility issues are no barriers to retaining identity. The 12 www.thiis.co.uk
company says that ‘Forever Fabulous’ goes further, to highlight the fact that seniors are still able to achieve goals and fulfil ambitions. Polly Eden, head of PR and marketing says: “Inspirational examples of this include Lorna Page, who at 93 wrote her debut novel while living in a care home. At 65, Carol Masheter became the oldest person to climb the highest mountain on every continent.” Polly says that the idea for Forever Fabulous came from Brighton, “We are doing something the town in which the different, presenting those company is based. “Brighton is famed for who need mobility equipment its tolerant, inclusive as they often are - positive, reputation. We felt that Ruth encapsulated the inspirational individuals” essence of Forever Fabulous in that she’d had experience of mobility issues and independent living aids assisting her recovery, but also she had achieved a long-held ambition by transitioning - even though she was nearly eighty at the time.” Polly added: “As with our successful Quadrosenior campaign, we are doing something different, presenting those who need mobility equipment as they often are - positive, inspirational individuals, rather than passive recipients. We want our mobility aids to allow people to feel that despite the obstacles they may face, it’s still possible to achieve their potential and be Forever Fabulous.” The website for the company is at www.essentialaids.com

New evidence points to adaptation savings Following the Government announcement of an almost doubling of funding for the Disabled Facilities Grant for 2016/17, and increases to the Better Care Fund, Clos-o-Mat says that there is new evidence that a bathroom adaptation can strategically deliver best value. The company says that an independent care cost calculator shows that something as simple as adding a toilet lift- the toilet equivalent of a riser recliner chair- will pay for itself in less than eight months, compared to providing care support to help someone go to the toilet For more information, go to www.clos-omat.com

Keeping it in the family Embryonyx founder Angus Long has hired his son, Matthew, to help manage some elements of the company’s marketing activity. Based in Newcastle upon Tyne, Angus set up the company in 2008 to provide SME’s, Micro businesses and newly formed organisations in the healthcare industry with a number of key commercial services in addition to seeking to identify, develop and bring to market innovative, simple, yet very effective solutions to everyday homecare problems. Angus told us: “Whether it’s press releases, advertising, website content, newsletters or social media, the ability to create and disseminate regular, quality copy is imperative to creating company, product and brand awareness. However, not everyone has the ability, the time or the confidence to sit down, research and write an article or blog piece. It’s a real skill to draft an article, press release or newsletter that is engaging and fits into the wider marketing mix.” He added: “Indeed, many businesses simply don’t do it, others dabble at it and some engage the services of a PR agency. Some time ago I was busy and short of time, Matthew, who was studying at university for an English degree, offered to write some articles and blogs for me. So I gave him the opportunity and, to be honest, I wasn’t expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. The work was excellent and I published it with no changes. More work followed to the point it made economic sense to make it more formal and so in May this year Matthew was 16 www.thiis.co.uk
hired as commercial services manager with a view to offer high quality copy marketing services to businesses.” “I really enjoy researching and writing the articles” Matthew told us, “it’s something I like to do. With studying English at university we didn’t get many opportunities to practice writing in a commercial environment. So, to do so is a great benefit as the vast majority of students jobs tend to be in bars and fast food outlets, which “Not everyone has the ability, while welcome employment, the time or the confidence to doesn’t offer the sit down, research and write an chance to utilise the skills and article or blog piece” knowledge, we’re taught in studying for our degrees, but this way I have and I’d like to do more”. And what about working alongside his dad? “I know dad and he certainly didn’t give me the job on the basis of kindred nepotism, he’d only hire me if I can deliver the goods and he certainly doesn’t treat me any differently to others employees. I’m looking forward to writing some great articles for the business and any other homecare companies that want them too.” Call 0845 3008823. The website is at www.embryonyx.co.uk

Hybrid pressure care mattress wins Queen’s Award Direct Healthcare Services (DHS) has received a prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in innovation in recognition of its Intelligent Pressure Care Management solution. Intelligent Pressure Care Management, featuring the Dyna-Form Mercury Advance powered hybrid mattress, was designed to help make a measurable difference in the delivery of harm-free patient care, specifically to reduce incidences of pressure ulcers. South Wales-based DHS created the patented design, which is a hybrid of a high specification foam mattress and a dynamic mattress, to help save the NHS vital nursing time and resources. It allows nurses to instantly convert any standard hospital bed into a dynamic mattress, enabling earlier intervention for ‘at risk’ patients. Hybrid mattresses are increasingly used by healthcare organisations as they have been shown to simultaneously improve clinical outcomes and deliver substantial saving costs. Currently 35,000 patients a day in the UK are nursed on the Dyna-Form Mercury Advance powered hybrid mattress. To win a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in innovation, businesses have to demonstrate outstanding commercial success and a unique approach to a new invention, service or product. 18 www.thiis.co.uk
Graham Ewart, Managing Director of DHS said: “Delivering genuine innovation that makes a real difference to both patients and the lives of our hardworking healthcare professionals is at the very heart of everything we do, so we are incredibly honoured to receive such a prestigious award. Marketing and promotion Alf Lombardi, director at Shrewdd Marketing, discusses how traditional business-to-business (B2B) public relations can play a pivotal role in a company’s marketing strategy, especially in the age of content marketing.
Content marketing – a new name for an old favourite! More recently a strand of marketing, entitled ‘content marketing’, has been growing in popularity throughout the B2B sector. Its definition states that, “it is the marketing and business process for creating and distributing relevant and valuable content.” This can be a hard concept to get to grips with for any company in the healthcare industry looking to develop an effective marketing strategy. However, it’s not as complicated as it first seems. Content marketing experts may attempt to distance themselves from more traditional forms of marketing, but the reality is it has been around for a long time simply under a different guise - public relations (PR). Due to its very nature, the best B2B PR strategies have included content marketing for many years, to increase exposure not only across print media but online digital media as well. A good starting point when developing content marketing is to produce long-form detailed information such as a white paper, or an in depth research piece, on a topic related to your specific business. For example, a wheelchair manufacturer may create a report about wheelchair accessibility in shops. After being researched and written, this piece of content can be ‘repurposed’ for use across different channels and platforms: in press releases, blogs/vlogs, on social media, in feature articles and even case studies. In the digital age we live in, whilst the circulation of printed B2B trade journals may be diminishing, many continue to receive and read digital versions, as they remain a valuable and trusted source of industry information and news. Having an article, or ‘content’, in a magazine can prove to be a valuable channel to market your brand, company or product. Even though content marketing strategies continue to
gain traction, it does not change the reality that B2B PR agencies have been producing and circulating content on behalf of clients for many years. What is true however, in the digital age, is that any content created has to be tailored for a wider audience and different channels. Shrewdd Marketing is a growing marketing, brand development, public relations and social media company, based in Yorkshire. The company has a wide variety of clients in a number of sectors, including; cleaning, construction, energy, engineering, greentech, lighting, logistics and manufacturing. Top award for Frontier Frontier Medical Group has been named Wales Mid-Market Team of the Year at the British Private Equity & Venture Capital Association Management Team Awards 2016. The awards are for the best in UK business backed by private equity and venture capital. Frontier Medical Group was recognised for the first time following a management buyout in December 2013. MD Simon Jackson told us: “In the time since our MBO we’ve been able to make a significant investment right across our infrastructure, not only in terms of manufacturing and growing our export markets, but in our staff as well, and that’s something we as a company are very proud of. We believe it is a significant factor in our ongoing success.” Frontier has worked extensively with clinicians in the NHS to develop the Repose range of pressure area care products, which today are the most widely used pressure area care products in the UK, with over 3.5 million people in the UK having used them. Hands on role for Chris with UK launch When asked what he is enjoying most about his new job, Chris Manning finds it pretty easy to answer – “I’m leaving to go to work from home every morning and not from a hotel and being at home every evening with the kids is just great.” Chris spent many years travelling around the UK and the world working for one of the larger companies in our industry, Patterson Medical. Now he finds himself in a much smaller company after launching a UK division of Kinetec, a French manufacturing business. Chris told us: “I had spent many years living out of a suitcase and I decided that I wanted to be closer to home during the week and so it was really a case of looking for an opportunity that would also fit in with being nearer to the family. Having spent some 16 years in larger companies such as Homecraft, Days Healthcare and Pattersons, I also felt it was time to look for a challenge in a business on a smaller scale which would allow me to have more control and where I could shape my own destiny as it were.” Chris knew the Kinetec products well. “Kinetec is a brand that we used to own at Patterson Medical and is now being run by Bob Donaldson, who had been International MD at Patterson. Bob was looking for someone to set up a UK division of Kinetec and as I had been selling the products for many years, the fit was good and the Surrey location works well for me.” The UK arm is now up and running. “We are now set up as a small business and the range comprises primarily CPM (Continuous Passive Motion) products, so we are involved in quite
specialist orthopaedic rehab at the moment. Also within the current range are orthopaedic traction frames, Kinetec Kooler hot and cold therapy products and we have also taken over the sales, marketing and distribution of Pulman orthopaedic shoes from our sister company, Halo Medical. That’s where we are today but we are looking to expand the range both in the UK and internationally.” “I felt it was time to look for The Medfac group, which owns a challenge in a business on Kinetec, is actually a smaller scale which would a sizeable business and has over 130 allow me to have more control” employees worldwide as Chris explains. “Medfac has distribution arms in the USA and in France, where our factory is located and we are also present in Germany. Our international distributor reach is also considerable due to the well-established Kinetec brand. The UK arm is very small right now mainly due to the nature of the NHS and how it operates. However, we have a great base from which to expand in the future, capitalising on the experience and knowledge of the group companies.” As for selling the products, Chris explains:

Chris says that he is enjoying being very ‘hands-on’
Chris Manning is selling a range of products he knows well
“There are salespeople on the road, but we are working closely with distributors too. Historically, the Kinetec range was primarily sold through the likes of Patterson Medical in the UK but we are also working closely with other companies such as EMS. We have also tied up a deal with Cyclone Technologies to sell our Kinetec Kinevia active passive trainer exclusively in the UK.” Of course, from his time in the marketplace Chris has a good many contacts in businesses around the UK and so will he be looking to sell through other companies eventually? “That’s something we are looking at” he told us. “What we won’t be doing is adding an ‘off the peg’ range of products, such as ADL’s and then selling them on. If you want to get a product such as a slatted bath board in retail packaging, then there are plenty of places to get that from already. As a small business right now, we are not looking to carry large stocks and be involved in the sectors where pricing is very much the driver. If we find an opportunity with niche products in the mobility sector then we will consider that route since I do have a lot of retail contacts, but it’s having the right product to work with.” He added: “I’m a great believer that there are opportunities for well-designed products that are more ascetically pleasing but developing them yourselves takes a great deal of investment and
at this stage, it isn’t one of our top priorities.” Chris has spent many years working in some of the larger companies in our marketplace and so how is he finding life in a much smaller outfit. “I’m loving it” he replied. “From day one I’ve been doing everything from ordering the products, putting them on the shelves, taking orders, invoicing, making the tea and anything else that had to be done.” He has seen other big differences too. “Being in such a small team, I’m not spending so many hours in meetings and if not in meetings then preparing for meetings, I’m just focusing on satisfying “If we find an opportunity with the customers. We niche products in the mobility opened in January and we are now just getting sector then we will consider to the point that we are that route” starting to free up my time, with the help of a small team in the office. I now have time to get out to meet people and explore opportunities that will help us to develop in the future.” For more details on the range, go to http:// kinetec.fr/en/. Chris can be contacted at chris. manning@kinetecuk.com or (07710) 162388.

Ableworld looks to the North for further expansion Following a number of store openings in the last twelve months Ableworld tell us that it is now the now the largest mobility and homecare retailer in the UK, with 32 stores now opened. According to Ableworld, following a number of store openings in the last twelve months, the company is now officially the largest mobility retailer in the UK. The planned expansion has taken place by opening more franchise units and also just recently, more company-owned stores with a particular focus on the North East. According to the company, the growth for the last few years has been concentrated on opening stores under the franchise model. This has led to retail units being opened in locations as far apart as Inverness in the north, Southampton in the south, Colchester in the east and Cardiff in the west. In 2016 the Cheshirebased retailer decided to turn its attention to the North East. Franchise Director Paul Boniface, told us: “Ableworld has had a presence in the North East since 2011 when our second franchise was opened. Although that store had done well and built up a strong local reputation, we felt that more could be done to develop business in the region. So, when the current franchisees at Darlington decided it was time for them to move on, we saw that as an opportunity to take control and put new impetus into expanding the brand.” 40 www.thiis.co.uk
Paul says that, as part of an overall review of the franchise operation, Ableworld invited Atlas Mapping, a professional mapping company, Gordon Clark, the to look at the potential market opportunities new North East that exist for Ableworld franchises in the UK. Regional Manager Using up-to-date demographic information and factoring in actual results from existing franchisees Atlas mapping identified over 180 market opportunities. Armed with this new information, which included a dozen potential territories in the North East, Ableworld began to look for likely properties in the Middlesbrough area which resulted in a “Ableworld’s medium term plan perfect site at nearby Stockton-On-Tees. of having 60-70 stores by 2019 The company also remains on track” took the decision to relocate the Darlington store to larger premises when the franchise expired in May 2016. Managing Director Mike Williams explained about a new subsidiary that has been opened. “To facilitate the two store openings Ableworld formed a new 100% owned subsidiary Mobility North East Limited. The new company will hold
the Darlington and Stockton stores on its books along with any other businesses acquired by Ableworld in the region. Once the stores are up and running profitably the plan is to offer them as ‘ready-made’ franchises.” Mike says that historically the company has been reluctant to open company-owned stores too far away from its Cheshire base. “One of the reasons for expanding via the franchise model was so that we did not have to over burden ourselves with stores at different ends of the country, where on any one day we might find that due to sickness there was no one to open the store. Trying to solve that from 100 or 200 miles away was impractical so for that reason most of our company-owned stores are no more than an hour’s drive away from our head office in Cheshire.” Mike says that to overcome the challenge of managing Stockton and Darlington, Ableworld has put in place a strong regional management team headed by Gordon Clark. Gordon was tempted out of semi-retirement by Mike with whom he used to work at Focus. “Gordon is a very experienced senior retail manager” Mike says, “and having worked closely with him in
the past I knew I could trust him not only to set the stores up but also to provide the strong management we need to develop the North East.” Paul says that once Stockton and Darlington are fully up-and-running Ableworld intends to turn its sights to other identified areas such as Newcastle and Sunderland. “In our opinion there is no reason why our successful franchise model cannot operate in the area. We want to prove that in Darlington and Stockton by setting up our own stores and then inviting franchise partners to join us as we establish our brand as not only the largest in the country but the largest in the North East.” Mike says that Ableworld’s medium term plan of having 60-70 stores by 2019 remains on track with strong interest on the franchise side from the Midlands, Scotland, The South and Home Counties. Paul can be contacted on 01270 627185 or by email paul@ableworld.co.uk

Our installers have had to ask customers if they can plug in an extension lead and this has led to complications when we are working in the yard at a car dealership or garage, well away from a power socket. The company has also added a service administrator to its 70-strong staff to help it deal with an increase in orders from across the UK as well as from its growing export market in the USA. We believe that effective packaging, can deliver much more than just protection to a product. When initially checking out any product, first impressions are heavily effected by its packaging design. It has an immense part to play in the purchasing behaviour of any customer, if it doesn’t impress they will move on to a seemingly more attractive product. We are determined for

Does advertising in THIIS work? Does advertising work in THIIS magazine. This is what Julian Cobbledick of Assistive Partner thinks… “We supply a range of software for healthcare. Since our company’s formation in 2007, Assistive Partner has grown consistently and profitably each year. Somehow, all of that growth has been driven by word of mouth and referral (with the odd successful tender thrown in). Like any expanding organisation though, to continue the momentum, there has inevitably come a time when we have had to invest in some limited promotional activity. Our first attempt has been very successful and has yielded an excellent return on investment. And it’s thanks to THIIS magazine. Our first series of three advertisements has resulted in a number of high quality leads and several 46 www.thiis.co.uk
sales. So we have decided to extend the THIIS advertising campaign, try a few new offers in DealON! and generally embark on increasing our marketing efforts on several fronts. I can honestly say that our experience clearly shows that advertising to mobility retailers in THIIS gets results. Thank you.” Julian Cobbledick, Director, Assistive Partner
More growth and space for Sitting Pretty According to Managing Director Jim Henderson, Sitting Pretty has settled nicely into its new 38,000square foot factory in Nottinghamshire and he is delighted with the continued growth the company has achieved. He told us: “I suppose it’s always one of ‘those speculate to accumulate’ situations that arise. We were happy producing the levels of chairs and sofas this time last year out of two thirds of this factory site, but orders and interest in the brand began growing quite quickly when we moved in here and the whole factory then became available. It was perfect timing as we had suddenly run out of space again in our existing new premises.” Jim added: “We didn’t hesitate to take on the whole factory which now gives us a great foundation for our future aims and projections. We now have a ‘goods in’ warehouse of 8000sq ft and a ‘goods out’, both at separate ends of the factory with all production taking place
in between. We have invested in a R&D area upstairs and are also designing a new trade showroom which we aim to open from August.” Jim says that, with well over 200 pieces of furniture being produced every week now, he is delighted the brand has become so recognised and successful within a short space of time. “We would really like to thank all of our customers and our suppliers for supporting everything we try and do here. We listen to what our customers require and try and help where we can and have a great relationship with all of our customers and long may this continue.” Call 01773 811610. OT suggests taking a bite out of the Apple
Kate Sheehan with the Westbury Range – rise recliner and matching sofas
Manufacturers are being urged to adopt an ‘Apple approach’ when it comes to developing new products. Kate Sheehan, who works alongside Repose Furniture as the company’s resident Occupational Therapist, says that as technology continues to evolve, manufacturers must focus on developing products which are intuitive to the needs of the user and are easy to use, an ethos which has long been championed by technology giant, Apple. Kate commented: “Manufacturers need to empower collaboration. Whether that is by engaging with other manufacturers, healthcare professionals or end users. Take a look at Apple; they continually focus on creating products which are intuitive. But they also move beyond this, delivering products which are easy to use, and which customers genuinely want to use. Adopting an approach similar to Apple, and continually investing in research and development is key.” 54 www.thiis.co.uk
Repose Managing Director Lisa Wardley says: “At Repose, we have taken this ethos and applied it across our entire healthcare range, providing seating solutions which not only ensure the user “Take a look at Apple; they is supported correctly, continually focus on creating but which also assist the user to stand. products which are intuitive” Taking this further, we are now also able to offer seating in a fabric which matches existing furniture. These are just some of the ways we are working with Kate to challenge the negative stigma attached to assistive technologies.” The website for Repose Furniture is at www. reposefurniture.co.uk

Bedrail court case results in £100,000 fine A North West NHS Foundation Trust has been fined over its inappropriate management of the use of bedrails at its hospitals. When the Trust was inspected in July 2013, inappropriate bedrails were found to still be in use and management systems were not appropriate to manage the risk. Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust was fined £100,000 and ordered to pay full costs of £18,465. After the hearing, HSE Inspector Carol Forster said: “The need for adequate risk assessment and management of third party bedrails has been recognised in the healthcare sector for a number of years and guidance and advice has been published by the relevant bodies to this effect.

More Social Media campaigns from NRS NRS ran a social media campaign to back The Silver Line charity when #SilverWeek2016 ran last month. It follows another campaign that NRS created and which was featured on the front of THIIS magazine a few months ago. That was the #BeSelfless campaign encouraging people to undertake acts of kindness in January. The latest campaign aims to raise awareness of loneliness in the older generations and recruit volunteers to become a Telephone Friend. The company created a number of animated gifs on their Twitter account throughout the week and promoted a sharable image on their Facebook and Pinterest platforms entitled “Seven Steps to Silver Line Success!” The Silver Line, which was only launched in 2013, is on course to take its 1 millionth call. The company has also produced a campaign around Carers Week with carers being nominated to win prizes. NRS has used digital targeting on one of their Facebook posts in order to reach the right people.

World’s first 3D chair on the way A 3D-printed wheelchair is being developed. The GO wheelchair prototype has been created in collaboration with a world leader in 3D-printed software. GO was designed following an intensive research period over sixmonths with dozens of wheelchair users and medical professionals. The design of the wheelchair comprises two made-to-measure elements – the seat and footbay – combined with a number of standard components, both created using 3D-printing technology. The customisable components allow for the wheelchair to accurately fit the

New product success for TGA
Martin Whitehead has celebrated 25 years working for Dartex Coatings. Martin joined Dartex, then known as Penn Nyla, as a 22 year old to work in the examination team. Operations Manager Mike Smith said: “Martin has trained up a number of examiners over the years, and his drive for perfection has been instrumental in maintaining the quality of Dartex products.” Martin has examined millions of metres of Dartex fabric through the course of his employment, which has gone on to have a multitude of uses; from designer handbags to mattress covers, and athletes’ outfits for the Olympic Games. Plans for Personal Wheelchair Budgets NHS England has set out plans for a scheme to replace the current wheelchair voucher scheme with Personal Health Budgets as part of efforts to improve services for over 1.2 million people that currently use wheelchairs. The Personal Wheelchair Budgets is a new approach to wheelchair commissioning, replacing the current voucher scheme. Wheelchair users have found a number of challenges with the existing scheme, now 20 years old, including a lack of information and guidance around maintenance, repair and replacement as well as a limited number of providers where a voucher can be redeemed. The new personal health budget scheme will offer more choice for users regarding where wheelchairs can be bought as well as a detailed care plan that will help users make informed decision about their wheelchair. The care plans will also go beyond purchasing the chair to also include guidance on future maintenance, repair and replacement needs. The new approach will also help NHS England collect meaningful data on wheelchair provision that will further help improve services and address variations in provision across the country. There are currently around 7,500 people with a Personal Health Budget and NHS England says that the announcement is a big step towards trying to achieving the goal of up to 100,000 people benefiting from the greater control by 2020/21. 62 www.thiis.co.uk

Things we like... This month we are featuring a message from Sidhil. The company has tailored their marketing communications to highlight the fact that, not only are the products made in the UK, but that the company uses steel from the UK too. Bearing in mind all the news coverage over the past couple of months about the steel plants in the UK, it’s a clever way to link to a
current issue. The promotional item, an email update from the company, suggests that Sidhil helps to support over 3000 jobs in the UK – a pretty strong message. We like it because it’s a good example of linking with a major news story to position your company positively.
