Don’t be shy, why not get in touch...

In an interesting move, Essex County Council leader David Finch has called on the Government to create a Help to Care ISA. He says that we need to look at how we do things differently and that, at present, his Council spends £1m every single day on social care, a third of its entire budget. Also, the number of 85 year olds in Essex is set to double over the next decade. He suggests that, following the introduction of the lifetime ISA, why not look at a Help to Care ISA, targeted at the over 50’s who may have care needs in ten to 20 years-time and need to start saving now? It’s something that I know has been muted before by people in our industry and it has to make sense, but I imagine it isn’t something that is easy to do. If you are in the industry and know about the equipment and services that can help in later life, then I would imagine you would see it as a sensible step, but for the vast majority it isn’t something that they would want to spend time considering I suspect and that’s the problem. It will take time, but I wouldn’t bet against the move towards an insurance or savings plan down the line.

Branding opportunity for pressure care products A&J Meditext has been supplying high quality pressure care products for years and is a specialist in welded and sewn manufactured items. Now the company is offering distributors and retailers the opportunity to promote their own branded pressure care products with a guarantee of the highest quality, competitive pricing and all the support they need to develop a successful pressure care business. Group Operations Director, John Kay explains: “We have decades of experience and now we are looking to help other companies build their own brands. We can offer a large range of high quality mattress covers and wheelchair cushion covers, all of which can carry a customer’s logo.” John says that there’s another important service the company can help with too. “We can manage retailers CE files or work on a license agreement to cover this area making it easier for our customers to do business in this sector. We can also oversee and support specific product related clinical trials on a customer’s behalf if they wish to do that.” John added: “The pressure care sector can be seen as quite specialist but we believe that there are plenty of companies out there that could do very well with their own branded products. However, when you brand anything, you want

to make sure that the quality is going to be very good all the time and that’s what we can offer. All our products are British made and I think the trade will be surprised at our competitive pricing. They will be able to offer their own customers very good value products that they are confident of doing the job. John says that you don’t have to be looking to buy huge “When you brand anything, amounts either. “We you want to make sure that are aware that for many businesses the quality is going to be very ordering large good all the time” amounts isn’t going to be something they will be looking to do and so we have very realistic minimum order quantities that we believe will be attractive to businesses of any size. We also offer the option of the products being delivered straight to the end customer too.” For more details, call 0113 244 6624 or email sales@ajmeditext.co.uk. ScootaMart adds to high street retail outlets ScootaMart continues to expand with more retail outlets opening in prime retail locations and with fully equipped service and repair centres. Managing Director, Spencer Coe, told us: “Our high street retail strategy continues with another branch opening later this month in the Ladysmith Shopping Centre, Ashton Under Lyne. It will be managed by Gary Eastwood who has been with ScootaMart since 2008.” It follows the opening of a shop in Leigh, which is being managed by Gary Blood (ex LLG wheelchairs) and David Smith (ex Smiths Care Centre). The pair has over 30 years of mobility retailing and servicing experience between them. Spencer says that there is also still a strong focus on online business too. “We still take our internet presence very seriously and have recently appointed Louis Spencer as our IT Development Manager. He has many years’

experience having worked for Brighter Future Workshop and his knowledge of IT and the mobility industry is proving a great asset and a valuable addition to our team.” He added: “Our policy has always been to use the website to tempt customers to call into the stores and this will continue. However we will be launching a new website packed with daily living aids available to buy online The new store can be contacted on 01942 909942. Fraud alert as retailers are used to con suppliers Companies are reporting some serious fraud activity in the industry with one leading retailer being targeted and others also being used to mislead suppliers. The Ableworld name has been used on a couple of occasions. Suppliers have been sent a purchase order for high value stock with the Ableworld logo and then somebody has collected the stock from the suppliers warehouse. Ableworld has not sent these purchase orders. The company says that it does not collect from suppliers, with all orders being delivered to its stores. The buying team at Ableworld has 8 www.thiis.co.uk

requested that anyone unsure about an order should contact them to check that it is legitimate. One supplier has reported being caught out by the scam when another retailer’s details were used to place an order worth £9,000. According to the supplier, the scam is very clever, using proxy server email addresses based in the United States and is almost impossible to spot. Anyone receiving orders that request that the stock is collected should be on their guard.

PR & Marketing Why not make 2016 the year you enter an award for your company or one of the products you sell? It’s a great way of getting yourself some publicity and here Nicola Pittaway, Account Executive at Bridge PR & Media Services explains why it’s important to enter and how you make the most of it from a PR point of view.

Award rewards – Making the most of your win For any business, winning an award is a significant milestone, and important validation for your hard work. You already know your company is doing great work, so to receive validation from industry peers is a great boost to you and your team and a great way to give recognition and thanks to everyone who plays an important part in your business. Just as importantly, it demonstrates to potential clients and existing ones that your business has been independently validated by an unbiased expert. Despite this kudos, all too often, once the celebrations and congratulations are over, there is a risk that the potential to capitalise on your success will not be fully utilised. This is the ideal opportunity to raise your profile and communicate your added value to all your clients and future prospects.

knowledge, setting yourself as an industry expert. A company blog should be a regular feature of your PR strategy, and with an award or accreditation under your belt you can utilise this tool to create a talking point. Tell prospects not only that you have won but why you have won. What set your business apart from your competitors? How did you achieve your success and what are your USPs? Regardless of what your marketing plan looks like, the important thing to remember about an awards win is that your success is not over until the fat lady sings. Winning an award is a great achievement that should be a big part of your company key messaging and marketing strategy for many years to come – and even when you win another one, of course! Bridge PR is a multi-specialist PR and communications agency with over 20 years’ experience of both the specialist manufacturing and healthcare markets. Having worked closely with a number of businesses in this sector, Bridge PR understands the clear needs of specialist manufacturers operating in both a trade and consumer capacity, and can identify and implement a number of strategic PR and marketing campaigns, which deliver results. “How did you achieve your success and what are your USPs?”

What can your business do to promote your success? Don’t be shy, use your title – once an award has been won you should expect to receive the award logo – make sure you use it. This is a great free marketing tool, which should become key marketing collateral. The award logo and title of your award, along with the year of your win, should feature prominently on your website. In addition, add the logo to all of your correspondence, from email signatures to business cards, newsletters and social media accounts. Email Marketing – Include the news of the award in your e-mail newsletters. Share the story behind your award and why you won. You can even include a link back to your award press release. Blog – Blogging has become an extremely important online PR tool. It presents you with an opportunity to demonstrate your authority within the industry, offering insight and discussion regarding trends and news within your sector. With regular contribution this is the perfect way to demonstrate to your clients and customers your

Big milestone for pioneering retailer Retailer Alphamarque Limited reaches its 25 year milestone this month. Set up initially as a catalogue operation, the company now has two retail outlets, in St Albans and Colchester. Director, Grahame Partridge had the idea to set up Alphamarque after first working for Esso in the retail market followed by a move to Remploy which had over 11,000 employees around the UK, many of them with a disability. Grahame told us: “I had seen that there was a lack of products available and places to buy them from and that was the trigger for me to form Alphamarque in 1991. It was right at the height of an economic recession, but sometimes that’s a good time to start a business because you have to focus very closely to survive.” The name of the company was conceived with directories in mind, as Grahame explained: “It was well before Google and the Internet, but we did have lots of directories that businesses used and so my first priority was to have a company name that started with the letter ‘A’ so that Alphamarque would always be near the front of 14 www.thiis.co.uk

a listing. The first letter of the alphabet along with the meaning of a badge of distinction seemed to do the trick. Also, I didn’t want to become limited geographically by having the name of a town, city or region in the name.” The business started as a catalogue operation: “We put together a simple catalogue to start with and the business took off when we circulated the catalogues to community centres, clubs and specialist homes. In addition, we were invited to speak to thousands of club members in and around London and the Home Counties to make people aware of the products available.” It was, back in the 1990’s, a cost effective way to get the company and its products known in a sizeable geographical region without the help of websites and Social Media. “To this day we have the strapline of ‘Try before you buy’ and those early visits were very useful to meet people

who could clearly benefit from the products we had. It also led to new product ideas which we could feed back to various manufacturers with customers’ benefits in mind.” It was five years before a retail outlet came to fruition, with the business growing through the catalogue and a team of sales agents. “We marketed it throughout London and the Home Counties which combined had a population of over 6 million and with the percentage of elderly and disabled people growing, it made for a very proactive marketplace. It was very much a face to face business. The model was along the lines of a Betterware catalogue operation and we had 8 sales agents working on our behalf. A decision was made to have up to 3 mobile showrooms operated by salaried employees and with the demand constantly growing, it was clear that we had to invest in a bricks and mortar retail outlet.” There are two retail outlets these days with the first opening in 1996. It was in an out of town shopping centre in Hatfield, and was almost certainly the first retail outlet in our marketplace to be located in a prime shopping venue, retailing alongside 80 other stores, all under one roof. “We decided that we needed a strategically located outlet and by positioning ourselves in a centre giving us an annual footfall in excess of 5 million visitors a year, we felt that this was a preferred route compared with a more modest location in a secondary site away from a town centre.” The second retail outlet opened three years later in the centre of Colchester. “We chose that location as we knew that a cost effective way 16 www.thiis.co.uk

of operating was to have shops and mobile showrooms approximately 70 miles apart.” The mobile showrooms are still operating at full capacity visiting more and more specialist centres and interest groups. “They are an equal part to our retail shop operation as the income they generate is constantly growing.” Asked what the best decision he has made is, Grahame replies: “Being in the business in the first place. It’s a people business and we have been able to build a family enterprise with both my daughters and son immersed in every aspect of the company’s operation. We have other members of staff that have been with us a long time and that experience is vital and well-recognised by our “It was almost certainly customers. We are able to offer products the first retail outlet in our at best value as well marketplace to be located in as giving great advice and an enviable afterprime shopping venue” sales service.” The retailer’s suppliers have good things to say about their customer too. John Negus of Cosyfeet said: “Alphamarque is our longest serving stockist. During 23 years we have always been impressed with the level of customer service and product knowledge shown by the team. Such retail success and longevity in the mobility industry is rare.” And Geoff Morris of Uniscan added: “It has been a pleasure to supply the company: “A strong, trusting relationship between supplier

and retailer is fundamental to successful business and that is exactly what a supplier gets when dealing with Alphamarque.” Grahame believes one of the major changes over the 25 years that he has been involved as a retailer is the development of product design and packaging. “I know we’ve helped in that area by talking to our suppliers and encouraging more colour and design in their packaging to help us merchandise better. If I compare our showroom now with what it looked like over 20 years ago, then it has a great deal more colour and product information to attract customers to buy.” “Having our first retail outlet in a major shopping centre certainly helped us to keep retail standards at a very high level,” he told us. “We were unique in what we were selling and we learnt a great deal from other retailers some of whom have been in retailing for over a 100 years and their knowledge and experience was invaluable to us.” So maybe Alphamarque might reach the 100 year milestone too? “With the marketplace developing all the time, there’s no reason why that couldn’t happen.” Grahame concludes “Alphamarque has evolved steadily over these past 25 years and we have applied different sales and marketing

strategies in an ever changing mobility market. We intend to meet the needs of new and existing customers’ demands in a similar way for many years to come.” You can contact Alphamarque on 01727 837836 and sales@alphamarque.com. The website is at www.alphamarque.com

Building relationships for profit Building relationships with local organisations can pay real dividends and here Alastair Gibbs of TPG Disableaids gives a good example of how it needn’t cost a lot to generate results.

How, sometimes being benevolent has extra benefits Some time ago I attended a BHTA mobility section meeting and it was announced that the Association was now in alliance with the UK Federation of Shopmobility schemes (NFSUK) and as they were a charitable organisation that were often struggling for funding, was there any way in which we could help them out? After the meeting I contacted our local Shopmobility scheme and the immediate response was indeed that they were struggling to keep running and always needed extra cash. Having thought about it for a while and analysing how much we had charged them over the previous couple of years to repair and service their fleet of scooters and wheelchairs, I came up with a proposal that benefitted us both. We offered to supply all the labour element of their service and repair work free of charge. This still meant that parts were chargeable as we could not control how the scooters were being used. Sometimes, as we know, scooter users think they make very good door openers. You just get close and keep on driving!! It also incentivised them to get the vehicles serviced on time and allowed us to keep the fleet in better order and

more presentable. This in itself encouraged the users to look after them better as they were not already tatty when they were issued. Our pay back is that we have our stickers on every vehicle to promote our company to the very focussed target audience that use Shopmobility and we leave copies of our mail order catalogue in the Shopmobility office. The staff, who are nearly all volunteers, appreciate our offer of free labour and promote our company to all of the scheme users and through wider social circles. The cost of the labour is equivalent to a few display adverts in the county papers but it has a far better result as it is promoting our company to those with a need or an interest in what we can supply. The net result is that by giving something away we are receiving far more valuable referrals in return and I would encourage all serious mobility retailers to consider supporting their own local Shopmobility in a similar way. New MD for Furmanac Furmanac, the UK’s largest adjustable bed manufacturer and manufacturer of lift and recline chairs has appointed Buzz Pattar as Managing Director. It follows a move in June last year, when Buzz, Production Director of 7 years, became Managing Director Designate. The company has a 48 year history and says that its success can be accredited to a number of factors, one of the most fundamental being the leadership of its Managing Directors. Under the guidance of founder Reginald Hilliard, Furmanac originated as a component supplier to the furniture industry. John Hilliard became Managing Director in 1992 and developed Furmanac into a manufacturing business to encompass the MiBed, MiChair and Hestia brands. John steered the business through the recession and supported the growth of Furmanac from being a small, family-run business to a company with a £15m turnover in 2015. Over the past 8 months Buzz has grown the business further and is set to achieving the £18m sales target for 2016. He has also witnessed Furmanac being awarded the ‘1000 Companies to Inspire’ by the London Stock Exchange during this period. The website for the company is at www.furmanac.com

Second year success for lecture The second Alf Morris Lecture was given by Andrew Marr, journalist and TV presenter, and his wife, ex-Guardian journalist Jackie Ashley. Andrew and Jackie discussed their experiences adapting to life after Andrew’s stroke in 2013. This was the first time they have talked as a couple about their experiences, sharing their insights on the effects on family and work life, rehabilitation and the need for better access to help and information. Andrew talked about how he was discharged without nearly enough physiotherapy and how hard and repetitive the post stroke therapy can 24 www.thiis.co.uk

be, while Jackie spoke passionately about how government should look at the cost-benefits of offering increased levels of care after discharge from hospital with a view to getting more people back into full-time employment. Launched by the Disabled Living Foundation, the Alf Morris Fund for Independent Living was set up last year. Plans are already underway for the Lecture in 2017.

New Through Floor lift on its way Terry Lifts is preparing for the launch of the new Harmony FE Through Floor Lift.

www.movingandhandlingpeople.co.uk

The Standard model allows for a wheelchair user or 2-3 people standing, whilst the Compact model can accommodate two people or one person seated. Like the other through floor lifts made by Terry Lifts, the Harmony FE is manufactured to BS5900:2012. The ceiling remains fire protected whether the lift is parked in the upstairs or downstairs position. Low floor car construction and the powered door with an automatic fold down ramp make entering and exiting the lift very easy. Operation of the lift is made simple by the dual intuitive one-touch car controls, a new feature. John McSweeney, Marketing & Export Director at Terry Lifts, told us: “Following the success

Loopwheels growing at home and abroad Since its formation in 2013, Loopwheels has developed a comprehensive UK and international retailer network and is now looking to expand its presence in the UK and overseas. Loopwheels are shock-absorbing wheels with integral suspension. In 2015, the company won the Naidex ‘best product in show’ award and since then founders Gemma and Sam Pearce have carefully grown the business. Gemma told us: “The last 2 years have been spent building a firm foundation for future growth and establishing an initial retailer network in the UK and overseas. We are now actively looking to recruit additional retailers.” In the summer of 2015 Gemma and Sam took the decision to invest in expanding the export side of the business and exhibited at Rehacare, as Gemma explained: “We knew that to make our mark outside the UK, exhibiting at an event such as Rehacare was vital and while it was a substantial investment for such a new company it was the best decision we could have made. As a result of our presence there, we now have retailers in Australia, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Korea, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain and the United States.”

Gemma Pearce, Sam Pearce and Emma Clarkson from Loopwheels

The latest to join this growing network is Bodytech in Italy. Enrica Quadrelli of Bodytech told us: “Loopwheels is such an innovative concept and innovation is at the core of our mission statement here at Bodytech. We were attracted by how easily and effectively the loopwheels combine with power assist devices for manual wheelchairs, the look of the product including the wide “We are now actively looking range of colours and the excellent to recruit additional retailers” quality and value for money. We were very impressed with how supportive Gemma and the rest of the team were during the negotiation process and that they were willing to understand our requirements as a distributor and the sometimes ‘peculiarity’ of the Italian market. We always feel that our suggestions and proposals are taken on board

and we look forward to representing Loopwheels in Italy for many years to come.” The company has also introduced a new range of ergonomic “Curve” push rims, which incorporate a specially designed profile to ensure optimum contact between the push rim and the wheelchair user’s hand. The shape of the Curve push rim is designed to support limited arm and finger function. Combined with the greater contact surface, this results in much more grip, hand and wrist stability, and greater control over the wheelchair while propelling, changing directions and braking. Based on the natural anatomy of the hand, the Curve’s ergonomically optimized profile

guarantees a controlled and effortless grip, while stabilising the wrist. According to the company, compared to the use of conventional hand rims, using Curve and Curve Large push rims is less tiring for the hand muscles, resulting in fewer spasms and less pain for people suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome. The company is looking for new retailers here in the UK and distributors in Germany, Norway and Sweden. If you are interested in retailer opportunities, you can speak to Gemma and the team at Loopwheels on 01623 860909 or email gemma. pearce@loopwheels.com

Scooter scoops Gadget Show award The new eFOLDi won the British Inventors’ Project at the Gadget Show recently. The prize included a stand at the 2017 Gadget Show Live and a cheque for £1,000. Inventor Sumi Wang has just launched a Kickstarter campaign with the goal to raise £90,000, to get the first production run of eFOLDi under way. There is a range of different pledge values, from £1 to £4,799. The cost of the eFOLDi starts at £699. The product was designed in tandem by Sumi and her father - Chinese engineer Jianmin Wang and will be launched globally later this year following the Kickstarter campaign. Jianmin won the gold medal at the Beijing Invention Competition in 2015 and worked as Chief Engineer for China’s National Acrobatic Troupe for over 20 years, where he was responsible for devising the mechanisms behind many of the incredible stunts that have won the troupe international acclaim. His designs for performance and stage props have won numerous international circus competitions and awards. In 2012 he broke his leg and was unable to get around. This paved the way for the creation of eFOLDi. Sumi explains: “An inventor’s mind is always at work and when my father Jianmin broke his leg, he decided to design his own method of transport to get around. While there are a lot of electric scooters available, Jianmin realised that there were no effective folding scooters that could be easily packed away to take on public 38 www.thiis.co.uk

transport while also proving secure over rough ground. The result is a scooter that weighs only 19kg, can carry an average-sized adult over 20km on a single charge and can be folded into an easilytransported piece of luggage. eFOLDi can be programmed with three different top speeds for different needs: 4mph if it is being used as an off road mobility aid, 8mph for mobility use on the road and 12.5mph for recreational use by normal road users. Sumi recently won £5,000 at the Surrey Entrepreneur Academy 2015, an event organised by Reigate and Banstead Borough Council in partnership with East Surrey College. The money was awarded to allow Sumi to gain an international patent for eFOLDi. The website for the new product is at www.efoldi.co.uk

Promotions that work Gail Cohen, Director General, of the UK Gift Card and Voucher Association (UKGCVA)

The gift that keeps on giving – making use of vouchers In a television programme about the retailers John Lewis, a remarkable statistic was shared with the audience. Urging her team members to sell more gift vouchers, a manager explained that a recipient of a gift voucher would, on average, spend more than 70% extra when they visited the store. You might have had the same experience when you have walked into a shop with a voucher to spend. So, we thought we would find out more about the gift voucher industry and where better than from the Association that deals with the subject every single day. Here, Gail Cohen, Director General, of the UK Gift Card and Voucher Association (UKGCVA), explains why looking at your own gift voucher scheme might be well worth the effort. Why should the homecare industry implement a gift card or voucher scheme? Retailers in the health and homecare industry have been hit hard by the recession and the stark austerity drive that has followed. Whilst many of the products being sold in this sector are essential for everyday life, many consumers have begun to shy away from more incidental items which could offer them added comfort or convenience. Fortunately, there is an easy way for retailers in this sector to address this issue and restore this balance: the introduction of a gift card or voucher scheme. It’s troubling to think that those requiring homecare may choose to go without certain products due to the expense involved. However, these same individuals may be unwilling to share details of these coveted items with their loved ones, often to avoid causing worry. Gift cards and vouchers offer the perfect solution to this conundrum, since friends and family can help pay for all or part of these items, whilst recipients can retain their privacy and independence. Benefits like these have led the popularity of gift cards and vouchers to increase consistently over the past 10 years. Consumer confidence in these products is at an all-time high, demonstrating that consumers are clearly

44 www.thiis.co.uk

reacting well to the growing variety of voucher products on offer, with those redeemable in multiple outlets being particularly in demand. Are there benefits to retailers? Gift cards and vouchers can obviously make a huge difference to those requiring assistance at home – but there are clear benefits for retailers as well. The first is the potential for ‘up spend’, whereby customers spend proportionately more than the value of the gift card or voucher. Research has shown that people shopping using gift cards and vouchers spend an average of 40% more than the original value of the card when making purchases in-store or online. Statistics also show that the majority of customers will spend within the first three to six months of being gifted a card or voucher. As such, these can provide a good opportunity to attract new customers who may come back to make repeat purchases later. Gift cards and vouchers are often instrumental in increasing customer loyalty in this regard, but only if combined with an excellent customer experience. What is the UKGCVA? The UK Gift Card and Voucher Association (UKGCVA) is the trade body representing the £5.4 billion gift card and voucher industry in the UK. Established in 1991, the association promotes best practice within the industry and works with government agencies such as the Law Commission on industry legislation. By becoming a member, retailers in the homecare sector will benefit from updates on developments coming out of government and in the industry, in addition to becoming part of a forum for discussion and networking. The UKGCVA provides continuous updates on market data and keeps its members fully briefed on the latest legislative, tax and regulatory matters, which are vital for businesses. Membership is open to any company selling gift vouchers or gift cards, in addition to companies that offer support services. Any retailers in the homecare industry looking to become a member could benefit from the ‘Issuer Membership’, more details of which can be found on UKGCVA’s website at www.ukgcva.co.uk

Home Lift company aims for ‘sizeable chunk’ of stairlift market

Stiltz Chairman Mike Lord

Stiltz Lifts chairman Mike Lord has revealed that the company has experienced record sales for a fourth consecutive month adding that the business is targeting further growth and actively looking to partner with up to 20 new trade dealers in the UK. Mike says that he became involved with Stiltz Lifts because of the unique qualities of the product and predicts the home lift manufacturer, which launched in 2011, will take a ‘sizeable chunk’ of the stairlift market. With a launch of a range of new domestic lifts this year, further expansion overseas, and the hiring of more new team members, he insists Stiltz Lifts has a ‘bright future’. Mike, who is also chairman of the British Healthcare Trade Association, said: “This year we’ve opened a new office in Leeds and moved our headquarters from the South East to a larger facility in the Midlands. We also now operate and manage our own factory in China. Now the company is looking forward to tapping in to the enormous expertise and potential of UK trade dealers. The company has been very successful selling direct to consumers and we want to repeat this with the trade. We believe having select partners around the country is the best way of achieving this and we hope to be making announcements soon.” Mike joined Sunrise Medical in 1993 and seven years later was instrumental in the purchase of its Minivator stairlift division. He formed Minivator Group and later became chief executive. During his 10-year tenure at Minivator Group, the company grew from a £5million-a-year turnover to a £50million-a-year turnover. The business was sold in 2010 to Handicare Accessibility where he remained as chairman for more than a year. His own company, Drol Investments, was set up in 2011 and has invested in several businesses 48 www.thiis.co.uk

in the healthcare and assistive technology sector. Mike became chairman of Stiltz Lifts in 2014 and is also chairman of Kirton Healthcare. “The key thing about stairlifts” according to Mike, “is that few people, who need them, want to put them in their home because of the way they look and feel but a Stiltz lift is much less intrusive and less clinical. It is much more aesthetically pleasing than a stairlift and people are used to travelling in lifts – they are not used to travelling in a moving sideways seat up a staircase. It is versatile “We know that the average and can fit into many different places. The stairlift customer tends to be product does not dictate where it goes aged 80 plus, whereas the like a stairlift – the average Stiltz customer is customer decides where it goes.” between 60-65” He added: “We know that the average stairlift customer tends to be aged 80 plus, whereas the average Stiltz customer is between 60-65, which means they are preparing for later life earlier and buying a home lift before they need it, so our product can also be aimed at a slightly younger audience too. Customers are often surprised at the affordability of the lift and so we are confident of taking a sizeable chunk of the stairlift market.” The website for the company is at www.stiltz. co.uk

new on the market New Grip Options for Wheelchair Handrims Flexel is introducing into the UK Fit Grips, ergonomic, high-endurance rubber grips for wheelchair handrims. Available in two styles, Comfort and Pro, the company says the accessories are a stylish, functional, and long-lasting upgrade from cold, slippery handrims. Josh George, 5-time Paralympic medalist and co-founder of Intelliwheels, developed the product to improve handrim grip and comfort while reducing hand strain. The Comfort model fits easily onto standard wheelchairs, while the Pro model is ideal for ultralight chairs and is made for more rugged, outdoor use. Both models fit on standard adult sized 24”, 25”, or 26” wheels and are available in three colours (Jet Black, Caribbean Blue Water, and Red Tulip), with more colours being released continually. As an added bonus, the Fit Grips are dishwasher safe for easy cleaning. Call 01280 704141. The website is at www.flexelmobility.com

Every person here is a professional that we can deal with. This show is far better for us than others. The delegates are committed to getting information and it’s a good opportunity to talk to them about new products coming along.

We exhibited here last year and it was our best show of the year. We’ve done other shows but the audience is too diluted. Every conversation we have here is relevant. OTs are key influencers and the first step in specifying our products, so being able to talk to them face to face is important for us. We’ve had another brilliant show this year.
