Introducing Karasu no Panya-san
My favorite picture book is Karasu no Panya-san. It’s a picture book by Kako Satoshi. It was published in 1973. In a bakery in the town of crows in the forest, four babies of different colors were born. The crow couple makes a lot of unique shaped bread with reference to the children’s opinions, and the bakery prospers greatly.

Each one of the hordes of crows living in the forest is depicted expressively, and the page where a large number of breads depicting various things such as vegetables, fruits, vehicles, animals, toys, etc. made by the crow family in cooperation are arranged in large numbers on a doublepage spread is quite popular with children. There are also books that record how the bread that appears in the work is actually cooked. As of 2018, it has recorded a cumulative circulation of 2.4 million copies and is counted as one of Kakosatoshi’s representative works.
There are two reasons why I like Karasu no Panya-san. The first is a four-winged child crow. They are very cute crows with colors that are not seen at all in the real world, such as brown, red, yellow and white. The second is a page with a large number of bread spreads. On a page with a lot of bread, “Wow!! That looks delicious!!” And the eyes sparkle. There are many loaves of bread with various objects, and they catch the eye.
