It Might be an Apple (Ringo Kamoshirenai)

I absolutely love Yoshitake Shinsuke. His picture books are so good; they’re weird, entertaining, and there is something in there for everyone. Including adults and children alike.

This is probably his most famous book; “It Might be an Apple.” In the book, a young boy notices an apple on the table in the kitchen. But, he pauses for a second... is it really an apple?

And then the adventure begins, of what the apple COULD Be. Maybe it’s an ALIEN? Maybe it’s a machine, or a house. Maybe it has other forms.

One of my favourite pages is the different other types of apple there could be. Apple in Japanese is ‘ringo’; there is a whole double page dedicated to illustrations of ‘rango’, ‘ringo’, ‘rungo’, ‘rengo’, and ‘rongo’, and all the other kana, like ‘tango’, ‘sango’, ‘nango’, ‘kango’, etc. And everyone has a unique and interesting shape. I want to print a poster and hang it on my wall.

I teach design, and this book is the ultimate explanation of what creativity is. Children have and understand creativity in it’s purest form. As adults, we often forget; this book offers us a hint as to how we can get it back.
