BEACH BIKE WEEK

What’s there to say about Daytona Bike Week, the grand daddy of all bike events, that hasn’t already been said? Riders, loyalist and enthusiast literally from around the world descend on this southern Florida vacation hot spot for two weeks of sheer motorcycle bliss. Typically, my Daytona experience involves trying to fit in everything from demo rides, the Main Street scene, AMA races, the strip on Bethune-Cookman Blvd, photo shoots, interviews and more. Not this time and never again. This year, I kicked back and enjoyed it with my boys. No set agenda. No time constraints, just riding and enjoying. And what’s more impressive is God

10 | ThrottleLife.com

(yes, I dropped a “G” bomb) still connected me with those I was hoping to catch up with. The Raceway was full of excitement with all major manufacturers vying to win the crowd’s attention with their extensive displays. Kawasaki stepped things up with another Bike Night in the Day hosted by Sportbikes Inc. Stunt Mouth, Allan Lane. Main Street kept the masses entertained with its endless parade of bikes day and night and the show at the infamous Rat’s Hole lived up to its well deserved reputation. Take a quick ride across the river and you’ll discover the soul of Daytona Bike Week on Bethune-Cookman Blvd

where Harley-Davidson posted up with their Iron Elite outreach initiative. This may not be Main Street, but better believe some of the baddest bikes and top builders always find their way to the Ave. Although Daytona Bike Week has been covered by countless others including myself, there is one thing new I can add. I’ve rediscovered the mecca of bike events and encourage all Riders to experience this phenomenal event.

rickey kiana g a d s o n Some people spend a lifetime trying to find their soul mate. Someone that shares the same passions and interests as you do. Someone that makes your heart skip a beat, stirs your soul and fills your spirit with unconditional love. That person you can’t imagine living without even during the trying times. Sounds like a fairy tale? Well, Rickey and Kiana Gadson must be living in a race fueled, jet setting, asphalt-burning fairy tale.

In our world of bikes, the cliché of rebel and loner reign supreme, so it’s truly special when you can involve your soul mate. Such is the case with Mr. Ninja, World Champion drag racer, Sportbikes Inc. Drag Race Editor Rickey Gadson and his wife, business partner, model, Sportbikes Inc. Fashion Editor Kiana Gadson, who also does her thing on 2 wheels with a Kawi ZX10.

They formally met at the race track, however they knew of each other before actually meeting. It just took Mr. RG a few occasions to build up the gumption and courage to approach his future wife. Together, the Will and Jada of the motorcycle world have four kids and are very much family oriented bringing their kids as often as possible. You may think the adrenaline rush of sportbikes is enough. Not in their case. They also enjoy extreme activities as zip lining, sky diving, and deep sea diving.

They say “where there’s smoke there’s fire.” You can also say “where there’s Rickey, there’s Kiana”. Whether attending the MIRock Superbike Series, Black Tigers Pajama JammyJam charity weekend, Double Lytte Posse’s Jeans and Jersey Fish Fry, the Biker’s Choice Awards, military outreach or on a set filming, these two are inseparable.

“We are each other’s best friend and biggest cheerleader”, says Kiana. More importantly than a piece of paper and a ring, Rickey says Kiana is not just his wife, she is his life.

Platinum Dreams MC (PDMC) was founded in 2003 by Stacey “Hellified” Clark, President & Founder, along with three others including one of the original and current members Kelly “Rasberi” Simpson during a time when the African-American biker subculture consisted predominantly of male bikers. With a commitment and passion for riding, PDMC chartered a course to offer an organization for female motorcycle enthusiast to share in the camaraderie of riding with the goals of promoting a safe riding and positive image of the motorcycle community.

there was a bond already amongst the PDMC Founders, so rather than joining an existing club PDMC reached out to the Speed Divas as a mentor. Woo, the Speed Divas President at the time took on the challenge and helped PDMC enter the MC community the proper way. PDMC was introduced to prominent clubs such as Down-N-Dirty, DC Sportbike Riders, and Millennium Sport Riders all of whom helped PDMC during their beginning stages.

Very dear to their hearts is the “Diamond in a Rough Mentoring Program” started by Edwin “Buck” When the legwork began to create Buckner for Ballou High School girls. “It PDMC (then known as PDSR), there has been a rewarding and humbling were only two all-female motorcycle experience to be involved during these clubs in the DMV, Lady Sport Bike trying yet exciting years for these Riders and Speed Divas. At the time, young ladies”, says Hellified. 20 | ThrottleLife.com

PDMC has a true sister-bond. They ride, eat, and cry together, argue and lean on each other as “blood sisters”. Increasing their numbers has never been a priority however, they have been blessed to come in contact with some great ladies that continue to enhance the vision. So what does it take to become member? For those interested in joining, be prepared for two critical questions: Do you have a bike? Do you ride your bike? It may sound crazy, but these are two critical criteria. Spending time together is the best way to get to know each other. It’s a long “interview” process making sure hang-arounds are a good fit for you and you for them before the thought of Prospecting comes into play. For PDMC, prospecting someone is an investment of time and effort and taken very serious.

They are often asked about starting chapters beyond the DMV. Currently, the focus is maintaining the respect they have all worked so hard to attain. However, if the club moves forward with creating chapters, it is essential likeminded women are involved to continue the direction. Bike nights, MC events or riding, you are bound to see the smiling faces of these ladies any and everywhere. No posing permitted here, they enjoy the road and putting miles on their bikes, a creed they live and ride by. The complete article can be found on ThrottleLife.com. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Rider BEWARE Have you ever been out riding while trying to ignore tingling and numbness or sharp pains in your hands and wrist? You probably dismissed it as a cramp from the long ride and decided to just bear it. But maybe it’s something more serious that can potentially lead to long-term damage such as the dreaded Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). Take it from our own Clutch Girlz editor Crystal Dickerson-Jackson of CDRacing. CTS is nothing to take for granted and can run havoc on those of use that love to get out on our 2s. “I strongly recommend anyone who thinks they may be suffering from CTS to get it checked out to avoid permanent damage”, says Crystal. “Whether you’re a professional drag racer or weekend rider, safety is paramount for your throttle hand.”

Debra “Lady D” Independent Rider

22 | ThrottleLife.com

The carpal tunnel is a narrow, rigid passageway of ligament and bones at the base of the hand and houses the median nerve and tendons. CTS is caused by pressure to the median nerve such as swelling or anything that makes the carpal tunnel smaller and may be caused by obesity, wrist injuries and bone spurs, over-activity of the pituitary gland, work stress, repeated use of vibrating hand tools, smoking or the development of a cyst or tumor in the canal. CTS can cause burning, tingling, numbness, weakness or pain in the fingers, hand or in the arm between the hand and the elbow. Although painful sensations may indicate other conditions, CTS is the most common and widely known of the entrapment n e u ro p a t h i e s in which the body’s peripheral nerves are compressed or traumatized. CTS symptoms may initially present at night in one or both hands. Symptoms

most often occur in the thumb, index finger, middle finger and half of the ring finger. A person with CTS may wake up feeling the need to shake their hand or wrist. Tingling sensations during the day may be felt as the symptoms worsen. Decreased grip strength may make it difficult to form a fist, grasp small objects or perform other manual tasks. To avoid permanent damage to the median nerve, early diagnosis and treatment is important. Pay attention! The warning signs that our bodies generate are key to early detection of any ailment, disease or syndrome, including CTS. A doctor’s examination of the hands, arms, shoulders and neck can help to determine if symptoms are related to daily activities or to an underlying disorder and can rule out other painful conditions that mimic carpal tunnel syndrome. Various drugs can ease the pain and swelling associated with CTS including aspirin, ibuprofen, and other non-prescription pain relievers. Although alternative therapies remain unproven, acupuncture and chiropractic care have benefited patients and yoga has been known

ThrottleLife.com | 23

to reduce pain and improve grip strength among patients with CTS. Surgery is also an option. One of the most common surgical procedures is carpal tunnel release (open release surgery). Another procedure is endoscopic surgery which is generally effective and minimizes scarring and scar tenderness. These procedures are generally recommended if symptoms persist for six months or more or worsen significantly. After either surgery, symptoms may be relieved immediately. However, full

recovery from carpal tunnel surgery can take several months. Physical therapy is recommended after surgery to restore wrist strength. Patients may even need to adjust job duties or change jobs after recovery from surgery. The majority of patients recover completely and recurrence of CTS after successful surgery is rare. If you suspect you may have CTS contact your primary physician for your path of recovery back to the open road.

F. Gary Gray

Iron Elite Fighter Pilot What does the film “The Italian Job”, Rick Ross, TLC and Harley-Davidson have in common? A truly remarkable and creative film maker, the acclaimed Hollywood Director F. Gary Gray. Known for such films as “The Negotiator” with Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey, “Law Abiding Citizen” with Jamie Fox, “Set It Off” with Jada Pinkett-Smith and Queen Latifah, and “Be Cool” with John Travolta, it was intriguing to discover Gary is also a Rider. A true Rider that enjoys getting out on his Harley and understands the feeling, passion and emotion of being on 2s that only comes from the experience of putting in miles. The New York native began his film career in 1989 and quickly became one of the most sought after talents after directing Ice Cube’s “It was a Good Day” video in 1992. At the young age of 24 he directed his first film, the hilarious classic “Friday” starring Ice Cube and Chris Tucker that put a comedic touch on life in South Central L.A.

Leon “LB/HalfPint” Brittain Photos courtesy of Harley-Davidson ThrottleLife.com | 31

“There’s a feeling of brotherhood and camaraderie you experience when you’re on bike” Gary began his time on two wheels with the very respectable Honda Shadow. However, after a short stint with the Shadow he switched to rock the infamous black and orange shield of Harley-Davidson where he says he then became a biker. Interestingly enough, Preach with Sucka Free MC shared this same sentiment after making the move to a Harley and I must admit the same after picking up my H-D Forty-Eight. “By no means am I a spokesman for Harley-Davidson, there’s just an allure and lifestyle associated with this iconic brand like no other,” Gary said with pride. Taking a break from the west coast life, Gary joined Harley-Davidson 32 | ThrottleLife.com

and a couple of friends including actor, Rider and awe-inspiring poet Malcolm-Jamal Warner on a 500 mile Iron Elite journey from the ATL to Daytona Bike Week as part of Harley’s Freedom Jacket Tour with of course the final destination being the scene on Bethune-Cookman Blvd. On this journey that Gary describes as one of his most memorable moments, he and the fellas were getting it in on Interstate 95 South. Not being familiar with Interstate 95 and it’s notorious speed traps, inevitably they encountered some of the South’s finest law officers as they were pushing triple digits. Given his experiences in South Central and

“Riding is freedom. It’s the closest thing to being in flight” familiar with stories of the law in the South, this Rider followed his instincts and kept on keeping on. Eventually stopping as to not make matters worse for his boys that did stop when the lights rolled up behind them, they were all given the green light to continue once the Officers realized who they were and what they were taking part in to show their support as brother Riders also. “There’s a feeling of brotherhood and camaraderie you experience when you’re on bike,” says Gary. “On the ride we pulled over to help another biker, during one of our stops a biker wearing a confederate flag helmet walked over to us and we all

started kicking it about our bikes. Without our bikes, those happenings and conversations may never have taken place. Bikes are our common denominator in breaking down otherwise barriers,” he continued. Be sure to keep a look out on the silver screen as he is currently on the set and in production with Ice Cube and Dr. Dre on the upcoming film “Straight Outta Compton” chronicling the life of west coast rapper and pioneer Eazy E and the rise of the NWA movement, due in theaters in 2015. And don’t be surprised if you see this guru of film at a bike event simply hanging out and talking bikes. ThrottleLife.com | 33

99 problems,

I got but

ABs

Ladies and gentleman, these abs come from primarily eating clean and healthy. The best eating habits to see sustained weight loss involves eating 5 or 6 meals a day and yes gentleman, this applies to you as well.

While training is always encouraged to achieve the physique you want, the foods you eat are 80% of your results. It may seem tough, but you must eat every 2-3 hours for a total of 5 or 6 meals a day. Each meal should consist of a lean protein (especially if you are hitting the gym on a regular basis) along with vegetables and a complex carb source. For instance:

ain’t

Afternoon – 2 or 3 rice cakes with 1 tablespoon of almond butter and an apple is a personal favorite. If I’m hungry, 4-6 ounces of lean meat or fish with a large serving of veggies. Dinner – If you prefer, dinner can be 4 to 6 ounces of meat with vegetables again. By this time of day, it is wise to stay away from starchy foods. Night time – This last meal can be tricky. I’m usually craving sweets by this time. You will find sweet and salty nuts or your favorite caffeine free tea will help tame that night time craving. I love vanilla chi or a calm tea.

Breakfast (first waking hour) – Oatmeal or fruit with scrambled egg whites and veggies.

Eating clean is a gradual lifestyle change that will lead you to that body you’ve always wanted and deserve. Aren’t you worth it?

Mid-Morning – Almonds or a whey protein drink made with water or 1 ounce of almond milk.

For more fitness and nutrition tips visit bodyeffx.com. Stay Healthy!

Lunch – Lean chicken, fish or turkey (6 ounces) and vegetables with 1/2 cup of brown rice or small sweet potato. 34 | ThrottleLife.com 34 | ThrottleLife.com

When Cadillac introduced their fullsize luxury SUV to the marketplace in 1999, it became an instant attraction for connoisseurs of all things grand and opulent. It garnered the attention and met the demands of urban lifestyles curators to soccer moms to business executives with aplomb. If an exclusive, full-size SUV with luxury appurtenances suited for your lifestyle is the goal, then the solution is none other than the 4th generation 2015 Cadillac Escalade. It’s the consummate vehicle for transporting up to 8 passengers in style and ultimate comfort; especially if you opt for the Escalade ESV which offers a 14-inch longer wheelbase and

40 | ThrottleLife.com

roughly 20-inches of additional length. For the latest model, the popular SUV received an entirely updated and rich interior, performance and engine upgrades, as well as advanced safety techniques to go along with its refreshed design. The dominant exterior is earmarked by the 5-bar Galvano chrome grille; vertical LED headlamps and taillamps; chromeaccented side assist steps; heated, power-adjustable and power-folding outside mirrors; a hands-free, powerprogrammable liftgate; liftgate spoiler; and capless fueling. The base 20” chromed aluminum rims are classic while optional 22” aluminum wheels

provide a bit more zest and fill up the vehicle’s large wheel wells. South Carolina’s flat and straight country roads (our proving grounds) were perfect for acceleration purposes, but provided little for us to experience the third generation Magnetic Ride Control which works like magic on the 2015 GMC Denali. With an advanced Electric VariableAssist Power Steering System, a stiffer frame constructed from mostly high tensile-strength steels, and better handling tires, the sizeable Escalade no longer rides like a boat on water in comparison to its predecessor.

Acceleration is just right for this size and weight SUV. It’s powered by a re-tooled 6.2-liter FlexFuel V8 engine with 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque which helps it achieve 0 to 60 mph in 6 seconds. Direct Injection and Active Fuel Management transforms the massive power plant into a respectable and efficient engine. Either 2WD or AWD are offered to go along with GM’s Hydra-Matic 6-speed automatic transmission. Step inside the new Escalade and take in a breath of fresh air. The interior is what you would expect of a Mercedes-Benz or Land Rover. Real wood and premium

leather commingles harmoniously with ambient lighting and digital displays for one of the most sophisticated SUV cabins available in the industry. With the 12.3 reconfigurable instrument cluster and the 8 touchscreen multimedia interface and entertainment center via CUE (Cadillac User Experience) telematics, innovation which brings intelligence to the interior. CUE incorporates OnStar with Automatic Crash Response, navigation, weather reports, Bluetooth, climate control, USB ports, and my favorite, Pandora Internet radio. For your audio pleasure, the phenomenal 16-speaker Bose Centerpoint Surround Sound system is one of the best in the industry and will leave you with an opera hall experience. And like the European brands, Cadillac provides more technology by way of the Driver Awareness Package and a Driver Assist Package which enhance your vehicle with a front-seat center airbag that deploys upward to keep passengers from hitting each other in a crash, Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning System, Safety Alert Seat, Front and Rear Automatic Braking, Automatic Collision Preparation and Automatic Safety Belt Tightening and much more. Currently ready for shipping, expect pricing to begin at $72,690 for a 2WD Escalade and up to $86,790 for a 4WD Escalade ESV Premium. 42 | ThrottleLife.com

2 Wheel Life Radio (based out the DMV) is an online radio show about motorcycles, the MC life, drag racing road racing, and pretty much any and everything that involves exploring the motorcycle culture. With topics and riveting conversations from prospecting, motorcycle ministries, Sucka Free MC, motorcycles safety, events, Abate, Ladies Nights, reviews and more, no subject is out of bounds. Hosted by Bumpy (also the show’s Creator and Producer) along with the talents of Saucy and Big Mark and DJ Taz on the 1’s and 2’s. The show’s concept was discussed for a couple of years by Bumpy and his good friend (his brother from another mother) Eagle, but resources and not being familiar with the business of radio were significant challenges. While visiting an internet radio show with his friends on GoGoRadio.com Bumpy had the opportunity to meet the owner who was launching a new internet radio station, WinDCRadio.com. This was just the

opportunity he was waiting for which marked the beginning of 2 Wheel Life Radio. Although the show has been through various personality changes since its inception, one constant has remained, the show’s creator, Bumpy. Throttle Life: What experience(s) have stuck with you and has had a direct influence on the show? Bumpy: First, to the OMC’s that have paved the way for us to be able to do what we love to do. Much respect. I traveled to Mbabane, Swaziland where I had the opportunity to meet different races that loved riding motorcycles. It didn’t matter what color I was, they all embraced me. Total strangers opened their arms and showed me love and respect just like I was family. Another life-long experience was working with Howard “Dirty Dealer” Clifton (R.I.P.) on the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Million Motorcyclists Motorcade (M5) Project where we raised money to assist with the MLK Memorial that now

sits along the tidal basin in D.C. Last but certainly not least, is our annual involvement with Ballou High School in D.C. Seniors enter an essay contest on the “Importance of the Black Male/Father in the Household” with the top four essays winning a personal motorcycle escort to their senior prom. It’s overwhelming to see families and onlookers throughout the ride in tears as we roll by and witness the impact we have directly on families. “All Us, For Us” Throttle Life: All Us, For Us. How did that start? Bumpy: That phrase came from myself and my right hand of 2 Wheel Life Radio (and sister from another mother), Shooter. We were sitting in Chipotle discussing the show and out of nowhere I said all us, for us. Shooter immediately loved it and said we are using that! Basically, it means at the end of the day we are all we have as motorcyclist. Nobody understands us but us and we should always look out for each other as motorcyclist. Throttle Life: Whats next for 2 Wheel Life Radio? Bumpy: Stay tuned for more, we’re just getting started. LOL 2WheelLifeRadio 46 | ThrottleLife.com

lz ir G ch Clut Kelly clontz

Crystal Jackson-Dickerson CDRacing

32 year old speed demon Kelly Clontz was born and raised in southern, MD where she lives with her husband Chris who also loves speed.

Kelly started drag racing with an altered dragster in 2000 thanks to her dad, but didn’t start competitively until 2003. In 2002, she made a few runs on Chris’ wheelie bar bike and fell in love. In 2003, her bike was ready. She’s been racing every since. Kelly’s #1 sponsor is hubby Chris. He is also her biggest competitor and they love it. As for others in her camp, Kelly is quick to thank J. Mark Cooksey who helps at all MIRock races. Schnitz Racing, who she can’t thank enough has supported for the past 11 years. Andre Carter Motorsports (ACM) not only builds her engines, but also assists on track day.

54 | ThrottleLife.com

Atlantic Cycle and Power has been a huge help and she looks forward to what the future holds for them. There are so many companies as FBR Shop, Rick Smith Race Engines, R&D Motorsports, DME, Dynatek, Vortex, Mickey Thompson, Fast By Fast, and Dragbike.com that she remains humbly thankful for their enduring support. As far as competing in a male dominated sport, she LOVES being in the mix of all the boys! “I don’t want to be in a female-only class. I am as equal as any person and can hold my own,” she says. “If you’re going to dish it, you better be able to take it because I’m bringing it with full girl power!” LOL
