Welcome to 2015 and the launch of our bi-monthly digital magazine. 2014 was an incredible year for us, so we thought we’d take time to share some of our memorable experiences and events pictorially. This is certainly not to minimize those events not included such as the Latin American Motorcycle Association’s DC Chapter 3rd anniversary, Joint Andrews Air Force Base Motorcycle Safety Day, 17th Annual Father’s Day Car & Bike Show at the Sanctuary, Omega Ryders Charity Fish Fry and Bike Show, Inviticus Riders anniversary, Queens Together, Block Burnas VA chapter anniversary, Sons of Solomon Fish Fry and so many others. With the constant flow of information and competition to grab, keep, and earn your attention, our magazine will blend the worlds of easy to digest blogs within a visually dynamic digital magazine while still providing not only industry related news, but also enriching content such as health and fitness, MCs, Throttle’istas, Clutch Girlz, outreach and charity support with content ranging from ‘busas to baggers, from the drag strip to the boulevard and test rides. And it doesn’t stop there. Realizing our audience extends beyond the digital realm and picking up from our successful test print magazine last year, we happily announce the begining of two annual Special Issue print editions. Thanks for supporting the #ThrottleLife movement thus far. Hang on because it’s going to be a fun ride!

What’s there to say about Daytona Bike Week, the big daddy of all bike events, that hasn’t already been said? Riders, loyalist and enthusiast literally from around the world descend on this southern Florida vacation spot for two weeks of sheer motorcycle bliss. Typically, my Daytona experience involved fitting in everything from demo rides, the Main Street scene, AMA races, the strip on BethuneCookman Blvd, photo shoots, interviews and more. Never again. I simply enjoyed Daytona 2014 riding with my boys. No agenda.

10 | ThrottleLife.com

No time constraints. And God (yes, I dropped a “G” bomb) still connected me with everyone I wanted to catch up with including attending the Daytona premiere of Why We Ride. The Raceway was full of excitement with all manufacturers vying to win the crowd’s attention with elaborate displays. Kawasaki stepped things up with another Bike Night in the Day hosted by Sportbikes Inc’s. Allan Lane. Main Street kept the masses entertained with an endless parade of bikes and the show at the infamous Rat’s Hole lived up to its deserved reputation.

ThrottleLife.com | 11

Take a quick ride across the river and you’ll discover the soul of Daytona Bike Week on Bethune-Cookman Blvd where Harley-Davidson also posted up with their Iron Elite outreach initiative. This may not be Main Street, but better believe some of the baddest bikes and top builders always find their way to the Ave. This was a turning point in rediscovering the fun with Daytona Bike Week. An experience all Riders need to add to their bucket-list.

The Georgia World Congress Center was once again packed with some of Atlanta’s hottest cars and motorcycles from sportbikes to cruisers to old school and new for the 11th annual V-103 Car and Bike show. For those that don’t know, the annual V-103 Car & Bike Show is one of the Southeast’s premier car and motorcycle events with an element of hip-hop and R&B entertainment consistently attracting a large audience. How large? This year there

16 | ThrottleLife.com

was a captive audience of more than 40,000 in attendance – not bad for a one day event. Prime sponsors Mountain Dew and Butler Tires brought out their array of custom cars while celebrity row featured the likes of Diddy, Warren Sapp, Major League Baseball legend Gary Sheffield and V-103’s own Greg Street and Big Tigger all of whom added an element of high-end custom eye candy consisting of Ferrari, Porsche, Corvette, Bentley, and of course the bikes.

I’m proud to humbly add my motorcycle club (Iron Bred MC) show up and showed out with our personal motorcycles on display from custom Harley-Davidson’s, to choppers, to metric cruisers. Providing the day’s soundtrack was resident Atlanta motorcycle-set DJ, DJ Dirty keeping the crowd grooving with mixing in an impromptu dance contest. On stage the crowd was again entertained by some of Hip-Hop and R&B’s biggest artists. T.I., T-Pain, Trey Songz, Da Brat, Jermaine Dupri,

and several other local artists kept the party going with high energy from the minute they hit the stage. If you’re a car- or motorcycle-head, a lover of music, or looking to catch a glimpse of your favorite celebrity; the V-103 Car & Bike Show is for you. If you missed it, you missed it. Reast assured you can catch me there again next year. For more photos from the show check out the talented work of @TazMan Images on Facebook and Instagram.

each Bike Fest ThrottleLife.com | 23

The 2014 Atlantic Beach Bike Fest aka Black Bike Week kicked off with Uptown Motorsports’ Baddest Baggers sound competition. The cast from Backyard Baggers were on hand to judge the show and pulled out a few of their Discovery Channel featured creations for added excitement. Just down the street was Bike Week Expo aka the “Hot Spot”, home to industry heavy weights as Myrtle West Customs, Roaring Toyz, Garwood Custom Cycles, Tricked Out Cycles and Customs Cycles Limited. But the excitement didn’t stop there. Bike Week Expo also included a sick stunt show from highly entertaining Team Myrtle West with female stunt sensation Christina “Crashtina” Billings alongside her male teammates Ryan Lanier and Patrick Thomas, may he Rest In Peace.

24 | ThrottleLife.com

A senseless act of violence occured between a couple of non-bikers at the end of this galvanizing gathering that unfortunately over-shadowed the positive aspects Bike Fest has to offer with the trail-blazing Bike Week Expo, the Bikers Choice Awards, Uptown Motorsports’ Baddest Bagger sound competition, motorcycle Drag Race Champion Rickey Gadson’s charity Ride for Pediatric Diabetes, Baltimore Black Tigers All-White charity party and the empowering Atlantic Beach Female Takeover charity ride for Lupus Awareness. These events brought out the best Atlantic Beach Bike Fest has to offer, attracting Riders who want to enjoy their time in this sleepy vacation town doing what they love to do, ride, cruise and enjoy the camaraderie.

Faced with a few weather related reschedules in 2013, Nanu’s 4th Annual Bike Fest jumped off with clear blue skies for a perfect day of racing at Colonial Beach Dragway in Colonial Beach, VA. In only short 4 years, this event has become one of the most anticipated of the season with not only attracting dragracers, but also the custom bike scene, vendors, MCs and independents. Bikers for Babies Maryland

The 2014 March of Dimes Bikers for Babies (MD Chapter) charity ride had a lofty goal of raising $35,000 to support local DMV families with much needed support to those with sick or premature babies and to those with little blessings that pass onto to become mom and dad’s little Angels. I’m proud to say the organization not only met that goal, but exceeded it in raising more than $45,000. →

The day began in scenic southern at Maryland International Raceway during the MIRock Superbike Series Fall Nationals with electrifying entertainment by VenDetta, vendors and of course the action on the track followed by our parade of bikes down the legendary track onto a 45 mile police-escorted ride through beautiful Southern Maryland. The weather could not have better for this picturesque ride ending at Charles County Fairgrounds with additional vendors, food, music from the Franklin Square Band and a custom bike show. There are those that have been involved in supporting the MD Bikers for Babies ride for more than 20 years. 2014 was our first year to join this charity and ride, but certainly not our last as we look

F. Gary Gray Iron Elite Fighter Pilot

What do the films “The Italian Job” and “Straight Outta Compoton” have in common with Rick Ross, TLC and Harley-Davidson? A truly remarkable creative film maker and acclaimed Hollywood Director by the name of F. Gary Gray. Known for such other films as “The Negotiator” with Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey, “Law Abiding Citizen” with Jamie Fox, “Set It Off” with Jada Pinkett-Smith and Queen Latifah, and “Be Cool” with John Travolta, it was intriguing to discover Gary is also a true Rider. A true Rider that enjoys getting out on his Harley and understands the feeling, passion and emotion of being on 2s that only comes from the experience of putting in miles. The New York native began his film career in 1989 and quickly became one of the most sought after talents after directing Ice Cube’s “It was a Good Day” video in 1992. At the young age of 24 he directed his first film, the hilarious classic “Friday” starring Ice Cube and Chris Tucker that put a comedic touch on life in South Central L.A.

“There’s a feeling of brotherhood and camaraderie you experience when you’re on bike” Gary began his time on two wheels with the very respectable Honda Shadow. However, after a short stint with the Shadow he switched to rock the infamous black and orange shield of Harley-Davidson where he says he then became a biker. Interestingly enough, Preach with Sucka Free MC shared this same sentiment after making the move to a Harley and I must admit sharing the same feeling after picking up my Harley Forty-Eight. “By no means am I a spokesman for Harley-Davidson, there’s just an allure and lifestyle associated with this iconic brand like no other,” Gary said with pride. Taking a break from the west coast life, Gary joined Harley-Davidson 50 | ThrottleLife.com

and a couple of friends including actor, Rider and awe-inspiring poet Malcolm-Jamal Warner on a 500 mile Iron Elite journey from Atlanta to Daytona Bike Week as part of Harley’s Freedom Jacket Tour with of course the final destination being Bethune-Cookman Blvd. Gary describes this journey as one of his most memorable moments riding with the fellas and getting it in on Interstate 95 South. Not being familiar with Interstate 95 and its notorious speed traps, inevitably the pack encountered some of the South’s finest law officers as they were pushing triple digits. Given his experiences in South Central and familiar with stories of the law in the

“Riding is freedom. It’s the closest thing to being in flight” South, this brother Rider followed his instincts and kept on keeping on. Eventually stopping to not make matters worse for his boys that stopped when the lights rolled up behind them. Ultimately they were all given the green light to continue once the Officers realized who they were and what they were taking part in to show their support as brother Riders also. “There’s a feeling of brotherhood and camaraderie you experience when you’re on bike,” says Gary. “On the ride we pulled over to help another biker. During one of our stops, a biker wearing a confederate flag helmet walked over to us and we all started kicking it about our

bikes. Without our bikes, those happenings and conversations may never have taken place. Bikes are our common denominator in breaking down otherwise barriers,” he continued. Keep a look out on the silver screen as he is currently on the set in production with rap pioneers Ice Cube and Dr. Dre on the upcoming film “Straight Outta Compton” chronicling the rise of the NWA movement, due in theaters in 2015. Don’t be surprised if you see this guru of film at a bike event simply hanging out, chilling, and swapping riding stories with his brother and sister Riders. ThrottleLife.com | 51

How do you revamp an iconic motorcycle revered by some for its traditional look, classic lines and instantly recognizable styling while appealing to those who view these same qualities as flat out boring and dated? As the old saying goes, very carefully. This is the unique problem Harley-Davidson (HD) faced when updating their 2015 Road Glide. As HD strategically made power moves under the “Project Rushmore” title with introducing updates to existing bikes as well launching new products, one was noticeably missing from this virtual cat walk of new’ness, the beloved Road Glide. Throttle Life was fortunate and blessed to be one of the lucky firsts to take this iconic machine out during its simultaneous national debut with one launch held during the infamous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and the other during the nation’s largest traveling camping motorcycle rally, the National Bikers Roundup held in Tulsa OK for 2014. → 56 | ThrottleLife.com 56 | ThrottleLife.com

During my seat time on the Road Glide Special I couldn’t help but reminisce to the Floaters classic “Float On” as I #RoadGlided throughout some of Tulsa’s most recognized areas hitting up the back roads, highways and a spin thru downtown while enjoying HD’s Project Rushmore 6.5” color touch screen infotainment system housing the navigation system and HD’s Boom! Box 6.5 GT radio. No doubt this system is truly functional and easily controlled via ergonomic hand controls repositioned to rest under the thumbs. Although more than 100 completely new changes went into the 2015 Road Glide from suspension, to shocks, to the oh-so easy one-touch tour packs, three major factors were essential according to then HD Director of Market Outreach, John Comissiong. 1) Better airflow management resulting in best in class reduced head buffering, 2) Improved ergonomics with the handlebars repositioned 5” back for greater comfort and ease of

60 | ThrottleLife.com

use with the infotainment system and 3) Improve the dated look while bringing the essence, spirit and characteristics of the Road Glide into the new age. One of the most notable improvements is the dual Daymaker Relfector LED headlights that pierce the day as well as the darkness for increased visibility housed within the stylish updated front fairing. Powering the Mack is HD’s beast mode High Output Twin Cam 103 V-Twin. The airbox enhances airflow for better low-end torque resulting in a faster 60 to 80 miles per hour 5th gear performance. Providing stopping power are high-performance dual disc Brembo brakes with state of the art 4-piston front and rear caliper dual front rotor brake system along with the safety of ABS. Whether you were a fan or foe of the Road Glide, one thing is sure, Old Macky is back and ready to ride. For more visit Harley-Davidson.com

putting the

For those not familiar with the Iron Elite moniker, this is HarleyDavidson’s outreach program recognizing and celebrating the heritage and contributions AfricanAmerican Riders have had on the motorcycle community.

62 | ThrottleLife.com 62 | ThrottleLife.com

It’s typical to see an Iron Elite celebration at dealerships throughout the U.S., however, Bayside HarleyDavidson (HD) in Portsmouth, VA decided to do something a bit different. In addition to their Iron Elite heritage celebration, Bayside HD added a “Ride Your History” Iron

ELITE in“IRON ELITE” Elite Motorcycle Club essay contest. The purpose of the essay was to engage MC’s in describing how their motorcycle club positively affected the community’s understanding of African-American Riders from past to present. After all entries were read and voted upon by senior-level Bayside HD management, Down-N-Dirty (DND) Hampton, VA chapter proved victorious. Their essay provided a sense of history with William B. Johnson as the first AfricanAmerican American Motorcycle Association member as a hill climber and first African-American HarleyDavidson dealership owner, Bessie Stringfield who is credited as the first Black woman to ride solo across country on an HD among her many other accomplishments as a Rider, Karen Johnson the first AfricanAmerican female HD dealership owner established in 1998 and the legendary Benny Hardy, an AfricanAmerican custom bike builder and creator of the iconic Easy Rider Harley Chopper.

Beyond the history with the heritage of African-American riders, the essay also superbly described DND’s involvement supporting the community leading by example as positive role models who function with responsibility and accountability in an effort to erase the gang stereotypical image of motorcyclist. “We are about establishing brotherhood and not trying to be a hood. We don’t shut our doors to anyone, yet we hold control of them. Help is help no matter whom needs it in good faith”, DND concluded. Just as important, the essay also accurately touched on the value and importance African-American Riders have on HDs bottom line. Big respect to DND Hampton and Bayside HD for continuing the Iron Elite Heritage!

With a few hundred vehicles anxiously waiting entrance to the Tulsa Raceway Park on opening day at 6am, it was all hands on deck as the 2014 National Bikers Roundup (Roundup) in Tulsa, Oklahoma kicked off in high gear. Although rains persisted throughout opening day and the following, the crowds steadily filled the grounds of Tulsa Raceway with tents, campers and of course their bikes creating the largest gathering the raceway has seen since 1972 as well as attracting the attention of Tulsa local news media from print to TV. Once the clouds and rains disappeared, it was clear skies for the rest of the weekend’s activities which included drag racing, a poker

This year’s Food Bank donations continued to be an integral and successful component of the Roundup’s outreach mission with a well deserved congratulations to The King Riders M.C., winner of the 2014 Isis award. Throughout the camp ground you couldn’t help but notice South Carolina’s hustle and campaign to host the 2015 Roundup. Their efforts paid off triumphantly as they overwhelmingly won Sunday’s mornings vote to officially host the 2015 Roundup. One of the industry’s best events returned to Philly in 2014, “Clutch Control” brought to you by Hardknocks Entertainment’s and Sport Bikes Inc. Magazine’s Publisher Allan Lane. Clutch Control came back strong featuring Jason Britton and Eric Hoenshell of Team No Limit with their always entertaining stunt show. Actor and rap pioneer Ice-T was on hand along with his wifey, the beautiful bombshell model, fitness pro, author, and fashion designer Coco were signing autographs and mingling with the attendees while enjoying Team No Limit’s 2 Wheel acrobatics. Bringing out some of the industry’s best custom bikes were Myrtle West Customs and Garwood Custom Cycles with a few of their show stoppers on display. In addition to the vendors, custom bike show, and personalities, Clutch Control also featured the skilled talents of the Bike Life’s Hot Boyz. Some may consider this segment of the community as undisciplined given their reputation for aggressively performing on the streets of Philly, Baltimore, DC, Atlanta, New York, New Jersey, and Miami. While this may be true, there’s no denying their pure, raw uncut skills lead by one of the most known talents, Dirt Bike Rell who tragically was killed just a few shorts weeks after performing and entertaining Clutch Control’s attendees. For more photos and coverage check out Sportbikes Inc.’s 5th Year Anniversary Issue. Clutch Control, welcome back! #RIP DIRTBIKE RELL, your talents will never be forgotten. 72 | ThrottleLife.com
