Noodle’s Tips For The Road Come on people…why do I see so many people circle around to see if they can get the closest parking space? Why do I see so many people perfectly capable, parking in a handicap space. Get your fat ass out and walk. Have you looked in the mirror? I am guessing you could lose a few pounds or your heart needs the exercise. I get so angry when I see people abuse the handicap spaces. Since my Mom takes me along everywhere, I get to observe these things. I used to have a neighbor who had a handicap sticker for her husband. Her husband died, yet she still used the sticker, even though she was perfectly fine! Those spaces are there for people who really need it and have a disability, not because you are lazy!

Wow…It has been an amazing year! December is upon us and this is actually our sixth edition. If someone had told me a year ago this is what I would be doing in 2010 I would have said they were crazy. I can honestly say, I have never enjoyed a job as much as I am enjoying this. The diversity of people I meet, is amazing. It is creative and informative. I have learned so much and it is fun being able to share good information. I get some awesome emails with people giving me great ideas and suggestions. I love the comradery and shared passion. I really want to Thank my advertisers who have stuck with me and supported the magazine over these several months, and especially want to thank Tony and Keys who have given so much of their time to help make this a success. I am hoping we can continue to bring the quality stories and fun little extras in the year to come. I am looking forward to a bright, long riding season with a little less rain in 2010. Please don’t hesitate to email with stories and photos. I can’t promise they will all get in, but we try. Don’t forget… we are happy to share charity events and also rides that might be coming up. We are happy to add them to our calendar of events at no charge. We are always looking for new advertisers, so we can keep this going. The Justin LeFevre Foundation The 7th annual Justin LeFevre Foundation motorcycle ride “Cruzin For A Cure” was another success, raising awareness and approximately $4,800 for pediatric cancer research. Founded in February of 2002 in memory of Justin, the Foundation is committed to supporting research that can bring an end to the suffering among children afflicted with cancer and seeks to increase awareness of the disease. Despite the rain, a total of 106 people on 78 motorcycles participated in the ride. One rider commented, “Facing a little rain is a small sacrifice compared to the challenges that kids with cancer face on a daily basis. It’s the least I can do.” The 50 mile ride began at Conestoga Valley Middle School, traveled through Strasburg and south on May Post Office Road. The riders took a break at Muddy Run Park and then continued North through the winding and scenic roads of sounthern Lancaster County. The ride ended at the Lancaster Park where participants were provided with a light supper and a chance to win a door prize. Event organizer, Don Weidman, is always proud of the riders and volunteers who support the foundation and the ride, giving generously of their time and money. He is also grateful to Auntie Anne’s for sponsering the ride for the past seven years. Consider joining us in the battle against cancer in kids. Another riding season is winding down for most of us. So, with your bike tucked away in a corner of your garage, now is the time to get your insurance policy out and look at it to make sure that you are fully covered in case of an accident. Yep, you guessed it, I am going to talk to you again about underinsured and uninsured motorist coverage. I am seeing more and
more cases where drivers that cause accidents either have no insurance at all (they are “uninsured”), or they have minimal coverages (for example a $15,000.00 per person policy limit - all the law requires to be legal - with the result that they are “underinsured”). I attribute this trend to the recession, which means that, if I am right, the trend will only get worse before it gets better. Do Not Trust that the driver that hits you will have sufficient insurance to pay you for your injuries and losses. Protect yourself. Check your uninsured and underinsured motorist coverages and get them as high as you can afford. Don’t put yourself at risk of facing six-figure medical bills and months of an inability to work with inadequate uninsured and/or underinsured motorist coverage. Don’t wish you had checked your policy. Check it now. Also, while you are looking at your bike policy, take a look at your auto insurance policy as well. In addition to underinsured and uninsured motorist coverage, you need to make sure that your auto policy says “full tort”, NOT “limited tort”.

Therapy seems to be going a bit better and I have already started increasing weights and my range of motion is improving on a weekly basis. Things seem to be getting better slowly, but at the moment they don’t feel it. I’m still in a constant discomfort of pain and stiffness. Nights are also still rough as they are very inconsistent. On Sunday, December 7th, 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise attack against the U.S. Forces stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. By planning this attack on a Sunday, the Japanese commander Admiral Nagumo, hoped to catch the entire fleet in port. As luck would have it, the Aircraft Carriers and one of the Battleships were not in port. (The USS Enterprise was returning from Wake Island , where it had just delivered some aircraft. The USS Lexington was ferrying aircraft to Midway, and the USS Saratoga and USS Colorado were undergoing repairs in the United States .) In spite of the latest intelligence reports about the missing aircraft carriers (his most important targets), Admiral Nagumo decided to continue the attack with his force of six carriers and 423 aircraft. At a range of 230 miles north of Oahu , he launched the first wave of a two-wave attack. Beginning at 0600 hours his first wave consisted of 183 fighters and torpedo bombers which struck at the fleet in Pearl Harbor and the airfields in Hickam, Kaneohe and Ewa. The second strike, launched at 0715 hours, consisted of 167 aircraft, which again struck at the same targets. At 0753 hours the first wave consisting of 40 Nakajima B5N2 ‘Kate’ torpedo bombers, 51 Aichi D3A1 ‘Val’ dive bombers, 50 high altitude bombers and 43 Zeros struck airfields and Pearl Harbor. Within the next hour, the second wave arrived and continued the attack. When it was over, the U.S. Losses were, US Army: 218 KIA, 364 WIA. US Navy: 2,008 KIA, 710 WIA., US Marine Corp: 109 KIA, 69 WIA. Civilians: 68 KIA, 35 WIA.. With a Total of 2,403 KIA, and 1,178 WIA. Battleships: USS Arizona - total loss when a bomb hit her magazine. USS Oklahoma - Total loss when she capsized and sunk in the harbor. USS California - Sunk at her berth, later raised and repaired. USS West Virginia, sunk at her berth, later raised and repaired. USS Nevada, beached to prevent sinking, later repaired. USS Pennsylvania, light damage. USS Maryland, light damage. USS Tennessee, light damage, and USS Utah - (former battleship used as a target) - Sunk. Cruisers damaged were, USS New Orleans, light Damage. USS San Francisco, light damage. USS Detroit, light damage. USS Raleigh, heavily damaged but repaired. USS Helena, light damage, and USS Honolulu, light damage. Destroyers damaged were, USS Downes, destroyed and parts salvaged. USS Cassin, destroyed with parts salvaged. USS Shaw, very heavy damage, and USS Helm, light damage. Others damaged were a Minelayer; USS Ogala, sunk but later raised and repaired. A Seaplane Tender; USS Curtiss, severely damaged but later repaired. A Repair Ship, USS Vestal, severely damaged but later repaired. A Harbor Tug; USS Sotoyomo, sunk but later raised and repaired, and 188 Aircraft destroyed (92 USN and 92 U.S. Army Air Corps.) SHAYNA TexTer The 2009 season is in the books, as the last race of the year concluded last weekend in Pomona, California. After a month off from racing, all of the riders and crew including myself were ready to get back to the track for the series finale. Practice was cut down to two timed qualifying sessions instead of the normal three with one being a “free” session. Qualifying was average for me, as I have been having an up and down GNC season. I ended the session in an overall time of 14th with being tied for 13th. For the heat we were going to have a second row, first pick start. I got a great start from the second row and headed into turn 1 on the start of the second heat. I came out of the turn in 8th place battling for the last direct transfer spot of 7th place. After halfway I took 7th place away from the rider and started to push forward. I was gaining ground on the leaders in front of me, but was

For the 2009 season I ended with a 3rd in the Hotshoe Pro Singles Class, a 1st in the Hotshoe Pro Twins Class, and a 9th in the GNC Pro Singles Class. We had an up and down year with positions, but I want to thank my team, family, and sponsors for sticking together. Target Our Boats, We’ll Take Your Bike or How to Get Your Riding Fix In a War Zone

This was not authorized. This was not professional. But damn it was fun! So here’s the tally for my most unique ride. Total miles covered: maybe 1. Bike ridden: still not sure. Destination: that funny place in one’s head that only a rider has known.

As a postscript, I’ll add that our Company Executive Officer, a Marine captain, submitted an official letter to the Army Colonel in charge of the base. That letter requested that we be permitted to keep the bike for use around the FOB. He cited logistical requirements, mission requirements, and some other official sounding reasons that we needed the bike for our operations. It was some of the most creative writing I had ever seen. The Colonel got the letter. I never rode that bike again. MELT IN YOUR MOUTH, ROASTED HOLIDAY BEEF TENDERLOIN One 2-Pound of Beef Tenderloin Roll (Sam’s Club or Costco has superb Beef Tenderloin) Preheat Oven to 500 Degrees Let Meat Sit On Counter for A Full 20 Minutes Pat Tenderloin Dry With Clean Kitchen Towel Rub Meat Down Thoroughly With Real Butter Rub Salt & Cracked Pepper Over Meat Thoroughly Roast for 25 Minutes On A Shallow-Sided Sheet Pan Insert Meat Thermometer Into Exact Center of Meat Thermometer Should Read 125 Degrees for A Perfect Medium-Rare and 130 Degrees for A Perfect Medium; To Cook It Any Longer Is A Crime Against Tenderloin & You’d Be Better Off Roasting An Old Shoe. Remove Filet From Oven To A Separate Plate and Cover Entirely With Foil And Let Meat Rest At Least 10 Minutes, Add An Envelope of “French’s Peppercorn Gravy Mix” to Pan Drippings For A Rich, Smooth Gravy. This is the easiest and absolute foolproof way I’ve ever found to cook a tenderloin and it literally comes out perfect every single time. E-Z CHEEZY HOLIDAY POTATO BAKE 1 can (10-3/4 ounces) Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup, undiluted 1 Cup (8 oz. tub) Sour Cream 1/2 Cup Whole Milk 1 cup (4 ounces) Shredded Mexican Blend Cheese 1/2 cup Butter, Melted & Divided 1 package (30 ounces) Frozen Shredded Hash Brown Potatoes; Thawed 1 Cup Italian Bread Crumbs 1/4 Cup Grated Parmesan cheese In a large bowl, combine the soup, sour cream, milk, cheddar cheese and 1/4 cup butter. Stir in the hash browns. Transfer to a greased 13-in. x 9-in. baking dish. In a small bowl, combine the bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese and remaining butter; sprinkle over top. Bake, uncovered, at 325° for 45-50 minutes or until heated through. Perfect w/ the Beef Tenderloin and a big bowl of Broccoli
Florets. Look for them in any grocery freezer. Be sure and get Florets ONLY! as those are the tops of the broccoli and the very best part of the vegetable. Microwave and dot w/ real butter pats. Salt & Pepper. Superb. MRS. CLAUS’ REAL DEAL NANNER’ PUDDIN’ 2-1/2 Cups Sugar 6 Tbls. All-Purpose Flour Dash of Salt 2 (12 oz.) Cans of Evaporated Milk 4 Egg Yolks 1/2 Stick of Real Butter; Cubed 1 tsp. Real Vanilla Extract 1 Box Nilla Vanilla Wafers *Plus extra for garnish & for crumbling 5 Ripe Bananas; Sliced 1/2” Thick 1 Can of Real Whipped Cream In a 3-quart heavy saucepan on low heat, add sugar, flour & salt. Pour in the evaporated milk and keep stirring constantly. After about 15 minutes, the sauce will thicken slowly. Lightly beat the egg yolks in a medium size bowl. Now, temper the eggs, which means that you slowly ladle some of the thickened sauce into the eggs.....slowly, and whisk gently. Now add your eggs into your sauce (since you’ve tempered them they won’t turn into scrambled eggs in your sauce). Continue to gently whisk your sauce, apprx. 3 minutes. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in butter and Vanilla Extract. Place pudding in a bowl and cover w/ plastic wrap. Let cool in fridge for 2-1/2 hours. Now, into a large glass bowl or trifle dish, add a layer of Nilla Vanilla Wafers, a layer of sliced bananas, then a layer of pudding sauce and then a layer of Real whipped cream. Keep repeating layers but make sure you save enough whip cream for the top layer. Garnish w/ crumbled wafers over entire top and wavers stuck standing up all around perimeter of desert dish. Now, this is the REAL DEAL method of making it and baby, Mrs. Claus don’t mess around cause’ this will literally make you a believer in Santa, the North Pole, Rudolph & his buds......... & Miracles.

In September of 2008 my husband and I attended Delmarva Bike Week in Ocean City MD. While wondering around the different vendors and bikes I spotted a motorcycle that was pink and white flames. I think I ran to it! I had been looking for a bike that I could not only reach the ground but could hold up. It turned out to be a 2005 Ridley Auto-Glide. Not only is it automatic, it’s only 410 lbs. Two weeks later it became mine. The day we brought it home it was pouring rain. I had never rode a motorcycle before but a couple days later I hoped on and away I went. I rode around close to home for awhile and then one weekend over the summer we rode to Ocean City, MD. On our way home we were waiting in line to come through a toll booth and we heard brakes coming behind us. A car slid up the shoulder from a ways back, missed us by inches and went down over the bank into a road sign. It was a little scary because not only do you have to be careful, you have to watch what everybody else is doing. I was glad to get home that day! This past September we returned to Bike Week with both our bikes. My husband has a 2008 Harley Davidson Fatboy and even though I like riding with him I can’t explain the feeling of getting on and going by myself. In October my bike was picked as one of forty to be on display at the Axis of Steel motorcycle show at the Lancaster Convention Center. It was a neat experience to see it along with all the other bikes. In early November I had some fun pictures done of me and my bike from Snapshots by Jess. I’ve met so many people and had a lot of fun doing something I never would have imagined myself doing, riding a motorcycle.

News Bytes BAD DRIVING IS IN THE GENES Medical researchers say they’ve unraveled the mystery to bad drivers, and their genetic makeup may be to blame. A study recently published in the journal of Cerebral Cortex led by University of California , Irvine neuroscientists found that people with a certain gene variation performed more than 20% worse on a driving test than those without the gene and they also retained less of what they had learned. About 30 percent of Americans have the particular gene variant, though a test to determine whether someone has the gene variant is not commercially available. “This gene variant limits the availability of a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor during activity,” according to the senior author, Dr. Steven Cramer, neurology associate professor at UCI. “BDNF keeps memory strong by supporting communication among brain cells and keeping them functioning optimally. When a person is engaged in a particular task, BDNF is secreted in the brain area connected with that activity to help the body respond.” Earlier research had found that in those individuals with the gene variant “a smaller portion of the brain is stimulated when doing a task than in those with a normal BDNF gene.” The driving test was taken by 29 people - 22 without the gene variant and seven with it. They were asked to drive 15 laps on a simulator that required them to learn the nuances of a track programmed to have difficult curves and turns. Researchers recorded how well they stayed on the course over time. Four days later, the test was repeated. Results showed that people with the variant did worse on both tests than the other participants, and they remembered less the second time. “I’d be curious to know the genetics of people who get into car crashes,” Cramer said. “I wonder if the accident rate is higher for drivers with the variant.”

MOTORCYCLE SALES ARE RUNNING OUT OF GAS Last year, fuel-efficient motorcycles proved to be a viable option for motorists facing higher and higher gas prices, but following more than a decade of steadily increasing sales figures, the economic downturn has caught up to bike makers. For 14 years, through 2006, U.S. motorcycle sales had increased every year. Sales started to drop in 2007 but still topped the 1 million mark. A year ago, as gas prices pushed toward $5 a gallon, fuel-sipping two-wheelers got a boost. Despite the worsening economy, street bike sales were down only 3.3% in 2008 and smaller scooters enjoyed their best year ever, posting a 41.5% gain, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council. Now, little seems to be working for motorcycle manufacturers as sales have plunged 38% in the third quarter from the same period a year ago (falling from 218,242 last year to 136,876), with the biggest drops coming in two of the industry’s biggest product lines: cruisers and sport bikes. Scooter sales are also down 62% through the first three quarters of 2009. The only bright spot was that sales are dropping at a slower pace: The number of bikes sold in the second quarter fell 53.5 percent from the same period a year earlier. Historically, the second and third quarters are strong for the industry because the weather generally is warm and buyers are gearing up to ride, according to an article appearing in the Chicago Tribune Despite a federal stimulus that allows bike buyers to write off the sales tax, sagging sales have prompted bike builders to begin cutting staff and other expenses. News Bytes NEW MOTORCYCLE EMISSIONS STANDARDS TAKING EFFECT As 2010 motorcycles hit dealer showrooms, new EPA emissions standards will be making them greener…both environmentally and economically. Starting next year when stricter Environmental Protection Agency guidelines on motorcycle emissions come into effect for all new two- and three-wheelers built or sold in the U.S., the EPA projects a 50% reduction in pollutants emitted at their tailpipes -- but such drastic reductions come with a bigger price tag: According to a 2003 EPA report, the average estimated cost per highway motorcycle to meet the 2010 standards is $45, which is likely passed along to consumers. At the same time, motorcyclists are likely to save money at the pump as the new technology brings with it better fuel efficiency. Increased use of technologies demonstrated as effective in 4-stroke motorcycle engines, such as the catalytic converters, secondary air injection and electronic fuel inject systems, are expected to decrease harmful emissions, according to a 2003 EPA report. The report also reads, however, that the standards will not result in universal use of catalytic converters. Catalytic converters are pollution control devices that reduce nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, and while not specifically required by the EPA rules, catalytic converters will have a hand in reducing emissions in the new standards. “We already have the 2010 models coming in, and they all have the catalytic converters on them,” Steve Tuchschmidt Sr., owner of MidAmerica Harley Davidson, told the Columbia Missourian newspaper. “That’s new.” The more stringent EPA standards won’t affect existing motorcycles. The emissions limits will only apply to motorcycles and scooters manufactured after the effective date.

His philanthropic foundation announced that the donation will help efforts to reduce speeding and drunken driving, and increase the use of motorcycle helmets, child seats and seatbelts.

2nd ANNUAL SCOUT CAMP BENEFIT RIDE Oct. 4 2009 We crossed our fingers all week long, watching the weather and hoping it would not rain. As it turned out you could not have asked for nicer weather. What a beautiful Fall day for a ride. Accompanied by some fellow Ride Staff, Scouters and members of the Retreads MC, we met in the parking lot of Bird-in-Hand Restaurant and headed for Bashore Scout Reservation. Taking the back way in through Fort Indiantown Gap Made for a very scenic ride. Arriving at Camp Bashore we were given the opportunity for a guided tour by the Boy Scout’s Order of the Arrow. These boys know their way around these Camps like the back of their hands. Also there was a display of World War Two Memorabilia including a World War Two Motorcycle. A Boy Scout Motorcycle set up to go camping with a canoe loaded on a rack over the side car, back pack and full gear... Plus a U.S. Marine Motorcycle and a chance to check out the 60 plus other bikes that came for the ride. Hot coffee, hot chocolate, tea and donuts provided before the ride. The Guided Tours started departing a little after 11am. Six groups of about 11 or 12 bikes were lead on a very Scenic Ride to Camp Mack Cub Scout Reservation. The routes were preplanned and make for a very nice Fall Foliage Ride. My son and I lead the first group out accompanied by Charlie Kern, dressed in full uniform, on the World War Two Motorcycle. (When they asked for volunteers to lead the first ride, everyone else took one step back, leaving Quinn and I up front. Tag we were it. My son is a boy scout and also rides along with me on Rallys and Tours. I have given him the title of “Position Control Manager”, and for this ride he was part of the RIDE STAFF). Everyone arrived safely at Camp Mack. There were guided tours given of the camp by the boys from the Order of the Arrow. A live band playing blues music and a Chinese Auction, with a wide variety of items up for bid, including aromatherapy items, t-shirts, knives, Harley Davidson Plaques..... Plus a Hot Pulled Pork BBQ Meal, including coleslaw, potato salad, beans, pudding and hot and cold refreshments. It was a good time for all. A great Ride followed by Great Food. But most important all the proceeds raised go to benefit the Scout Camps. In these hard economic times this is especially appreciated by the Camp Rangers. It gives them a little extra to work with above and beyond their very limited budgets. My son and I would like to thank everyone who participated in this Benefit Ride.
